At the February 11 Cooma-Monaro Shire Council meeting, local resident Bruno Bruno raised the issue of several gutters around his property in Bombala Street that are continuing to cause trouble because of poor drainage and the deterioration of roads. Council resolved this issue with a unanimous response to fix the gutters under the Operational Plan for 2013/2014. Council has recently fixed several of these gutters and the

Victoria Avenue road has been sealed as well in order to improve the area. However, laying new concrete in the gutters and sealing the roads is not a long term fix in the eyes of Mr Bruno, particularly when the culprits causing the damage, the old trees along the road, are still going to crack the new concrete with their roots, as is already happening. A report to the council meeting states: ‘Practically the issue results in a short term inconvenience when it rains for people parking against some sections of the kerb.’ This is not the main issue for Mr Bruno, however, the wall that makes up the fence at the front of his house is continuously developing new cracks and the freshly tarred road in the street is breaking away due to the erosion caused by the water that cannot drain. Currently it seems as if Council is only looking to short-term solutions for the problem, as there has been ‘no funding

allocation to strategically address the issue in its current 10-year financial plan.’ The report said that ‘Minor funding is allocated to maintenance, however there are many similar situations in Bombala Street and section of Sharp Street that require maintenance.’ Some of Council’s solutions have caused Mr Bruno trouble in the past, like the re-surfacing of Victoria Lane - since the Council tarred the street the pipes at the side of Mr Bruno’s house have started to block and cause damage. Council’s long term plan is to relocate the kerb 1.5 metres toward the centre of the road line in order to avoid further damage occurring, but as tree roots spread and continue to cause issues, it is something that required further investigation. The cost of solving

this issue in Bombala Street could be up to $150,000, money that Council does not currently have allocated to such an issue. Simply digging the tree roots up is not something that can easily be done, with telephone lines, gas lines and other such inconvenience below the nature strip, it is quite dangerous to attempt to lop the roots. Mr Bruno has lived in his house in Bombala street since 1967 and

has witnessed the damage these uneven drains can do. He said it goes beyond a parking inconvenience for him and his neighbours, with the cracked footpaths, driveways, walls and the deteriorating roads, they are hoping a solution is possible. Since Victoria Lane was sealed, Mr Bruno’s drains become blocked. The broken bitumen.

Cooma’s street lights to turn ‘green’ Next month Council is set program which council’s carbon $15,000 a year.

General Manager, JOE VESCIO

Council recently created a new role within the Strategic Planning Unit of Recreation and Environmental Coordinator. One of the role’s key functions, amongst other things, is to continue to support, advocate and plan for the shared trail network. There are a number of trail construction projects underway driven by a variety of stakeholders and supported by the local community and mountain bike clubs. There are over 40km of new shared pathways (walking and mountain bike trails) constructed within the Shire over the last two years. This includes the trails that have been constructed within the Kosciusko National Park, Bungarra Alpine Centre, Lake Crackenback Resort, Jindabyne, Thredbo, and Berridale. Mountain biking has become an increasingly popular activity in the Shire and having a variety of shared use trails in the area provides a recreational experience that will increase summer visitation as well as provide local residents with new recreational facilities with some tracks suitable for people of all ages and skill level. After the successful completion of Mill Creek (Jindabyne to Tyrolean Village) there are large numbers of runners, mountain bikers and walkers on the trails already. The ultimate aim is to see the Jindabyne trail extend around the lake and link to the Thredbo Valley Trail at Bullocks Flat within the Kosciusko National Park. The Jindabyne Trail 355 Committee is currently seeking funding to continue the trail. The next stages of the project will include linking Tyrolean Village to East Jindabyne followed by curiosity Rocks to Hatchery Bay. There are other groups in the area specific to growing mountain biking and cycling in the area such as Jindabyne Triathlon & Mountain Bike Club, Rolling Ground Jindabyne and Bungarra Alpine Centre. There are also trails in Kosciuszko National Park, Thredbo, Lake Crackenback Resort as well as the planned Berridale Heritage and Adaminaby Heritage Trails. Stay tuned for further exciting developments.

Cooma Monaro Shire to launch into a new is expected to reduce footprint and save up to

Working in conjunction with Essential Energy, council will be replacing more than 600 streetlights with new energy efficient fluorescent or sodium lights. Essential energy and its specialist management team ‘energyanswers’ developed the program. The program will assist local councils across NSW to achieve cost and environmental benefits and improve public lighting. South Eastern Regional Manager, Phillip Green said that all inefficient street light luminaires will be replaced next month in conjunction with Essential Energy’s current Bulk Lamp Replacement program. “We identified more than 600 streetlights that were suitable for energy efficient lighting upgrades in the Cooma Monaro Council area,” Mr Green said. “Council can expect a number of community benefits from switching to energy efficient luminaires, including reducing their carbon footprint, saving on energy bills and better value for ratepayers, “The lights will reduce Council’s carbon footprint by an estimated 100 tonnes of CO2-e per year, or the equivalent of taking around 30 cars off the road,” Phillip said

Essential Energy will work with Cooma-Monaro Shire Coucnil to replace street lighting with green energy. that the new streetlights comply with the Australian Public Lighting Standards and offer a longer life expectancy than the existing lamps. “Our local communities will continue to enjoy a safe and reliable streetlight service that delivers the same light output

and while using around 40 per cent of the energy of the current lights,” he said. The estimated cost for council is $1500 but they may save up to $15,000 per annum, which will be used to offset energy charges.

Resilience - standing up for rural Australia

News

7

From the desk of the General Manager, Mr John Vucic Cooma-Monaro Shire Council

Cooma’s wonderful achievers The 2012 production of Dancing with the Cooma Stars, organised by the Monaro Committee for Cancer Research (MCCR), has won the prestigious “In the Spirit of the Community” award at the recent Canberra Area Theatre (CAT) award ceremonies. Resilience board members, from left, Jane Reid (Cooma), Winton Brocklebank (Canberra), Steph McDonald (Cooma), Liam O’Duibhir (Merimbula), Amanda Steinke (Cooma). Cooma has become the birthplace for the ambitious and innovative new not-forprofit organisation ‘Resilience Inc’ with a range of projects in its sight, aiming to enrich the lives of those living in rural Australian communities. ‘ Resilience Inc’ is set to generate social, economic and environmental prosperity in rural communities, beginning with Cooma. Funded by philanthropy, donations and fundraising, ‘Resilience Inc’ aims to invigorate and enrich the lives of people living in any Rural Australian Community. The organisation is made up of seven board members who come from diverse backgrounds and expertise. Three of these board members come from Cooma, two from Canberra, one from Sydney and one from Merimbula. The foundation president, Stephanie McDonald, has big goals in her sights ultimately wanting to spread ‘Resilience’ all over Australia. But first the focus remains on the South East Regions where large-

scale programs and projects will hopefully be taking place. Some of these include an affordable purchase housing program, renewable energy and sustainability projects, developing and supporting social enterprise, community development programs and community grants schemes. “It’s all for the community. We just want to see rural communities thrive socially, environmentally and economically,” Ms McDonald said. Perhaps the organisation’s largest goal, is a multi-million dollar arts and hospitality centre based in Cooma’s CBD. If built, the centre would be of a professional level, 300 seat performing arts centre, incorporating 30 first class guest rooms, 20 staff and performer residential rooms, function rooms, commercial space and dining facilities in the Cooma CDB. Another huge goal is an affordable-purchase eco housing scheme. The scheme will provide the opportunity to low-income

Malicious damage reports Cooma Police are requesting assistance from the public in relation to acts of malicious damage around Cooma recently. Vandals have broken windows at the Multi Function Centre at Cooma Showground and caused damage at other locations around town.

Anyone with any information about these incidents is asked to contact the Cooma police Station. Local emergency services attended a motor vehicle accident near Adaminaby last Saturday. Only minor injuries were reported in the accident.

earners living in rural communities and are unable to obtain a mortgage to build equity in an asset and eventually build their own home. In conjunction with the affordablepurchase eco housing scheme, Resilience Inc plans to build an eco home in the region as an art union prize that would be open to the public as a demonstration/ educational eco home. Ms McDonald admits that the projects and organization are still very premature however ‘Resilience Inc’ has a very strong team of board members and business and fundraising models to allow these huge dreams to become a reality. “We believe it’s all possible, but it must be supported by the local community,” she said.

The award recognises the effort of the local committee in organising the star-studded event, which saw local identities, with the help of professional dancers, tripping the light fantastic to packed audiences. The spectacular performances raised more than $185,000 for cancer research, which was an outstanding result and a credit to the scores of people who ensured everything ran smoothly and to the local and regional community, which supported the event with such enthusiasm. We all endorse deputy mayor Cr Bronnie Taylor’s comments on behalf of council: “Our heartfelt thanks and congratulations go to the committee on its fundraising initiative, which has surpassed all expectations for the benefit of cancer patients and their families in the region”. Our sincere congratulations are also extended to the Cooma Little Theatre, whose members were finalists in the Canberra Awards. Jim and Joyce Brindle were nominated for their production of Run for Your Wife, while Tim Cooke was nominated for a best actor award for his performance as Stanley Gacher in the same production. The theatre also was nominated for its production of Three One-Act Plays. Well done, everyone. You do us proud as a community.

Council project endorsed Council has been successful in gaining Regional Development Australia (Southern Inland) acceptance to proceed to full application stage for its proposed Cooma Lifestyle/Tourism CBD landscaping project. The project involves the redevelopment of the main street infrastructure to promote retail economic growth within the CBD precinct as well as promoting Cooma as a tourist destination. The initial stages of the project will focus on Sharp Street and the adjacent Centennial Park and include the upgrading of entertainment facilities, footpaths and landscaping. The total cost of the project is $1,350,000 and the value of the RDA grant being sought is $500,000. Having been nominated by RDASI for full application, the necessary details will be submitted by 27 March 2013. Council’s project is “budgeted and shovel ready” and will commence as soon as possible.

Land value affected by wind farms? Editor,

the

postman calls

Now here’s a funny thing. Last week, one morning when The Postman was rushing to work, he noticed a hundred or more crows sitting on the powerlines outside Cooma-Monaro Shire Council chambers. At first, harking back to Scottish lore, The Postman thought someone within the building may have carked it, but no… The answer was plain as … across the road, at the Savoy Cinema, “Hitchock” is playing. Simple! (It might have been about a different movie, but luckily there were no madmen with ruddy great knives lurking in the vicinity as well…) Nice of Michael Klim to pop into Cooma Sportpower to say g’day to the crew last Saturday. Apparently, Michael met Col Langdon at a conference the week before and called in on his way to Thredbo to see Col’s shop. Not a bad drawcard for a Saturday morning. Those of you who missed the car boot sale for the Sir William Hudson Memorial home last Saturday - take heart. The sale will be held, just as soon as a date can be secured. But it will be soon! With only a day until autumn officially starts, The Postman has noticed that, on cue, local trees are changing colour, the fogs and mists are already here and the mornings are darker and colder. All of which means there are only four weeks left for Cooma swimmers to enjoy their preferred exercise. Oh, for a yearround swimming venue in Cooma! We want one and we want it NOW when do we want it? NOW!

Having read with interest recently in The Australian “Turbines tarnish property values” printed on the 12th of February 2013 by Pia Akerman, I wonder at what impact and precedent such a finding as handed down by a Victorian Federal magistrate will have here for the Monaro landholders adjacent to the Boco Rock wind farm development? In what is a landmark test case and running against the grain of what wind turbine developers have been insisting that land values are not to be affected by such developments - a Federal court has found that wind farms cut back substantially the value of land around such developments. And the South Gippsland Shire, Victoria, in a separate case, has amended one prominent landowner’s rates to help offset the loss of value of their land, measured up to a 32% reduction. What guarantees do Monaro graziers and landholders have adjacent to or visually within range of the wind

turbines, that the value of their land won’t be affected also? If land values decrease adjacent to the turbines, will our local Councils amend rates to offset losses of their affected rate payers? Who will compensate residents who are unable to sell their properties? Where is the compensation or a fund to compensate land owners for the loss of their rights to visual and acoustic amenity? How will banks and lending bodies absorb this loss in value with landowners’ mortgages? The stillness and pristine quality clearly expressed in the landscape of the Monaro provides the 4000 or more pilgrims who visit our monastery annually with spiritual edification. Will local Council compensate us when these attributes are compromised? I urge affected landholders to contact their local Councils and ask for assurances your land value won’t be affected by the turbines. Fr Sergei Holy Transfiguration Monastery Bombala

Proposed sale of Cooma saleyards Editor, As a ‘hobby’ farmer with an irregular use of the sale yards, maybe twice a year, I have a couple of reasons for retaining our yards (The Monaro Post February 21, 2013). Socially I know of many locals, perhaps not selling or buying on the day, who congregate at the sale yards in order to discuss stock trends, prices, innovations, and generally communicate with each other collectively. We have retired graziers for whom this is the only opportunity to see one another, and boost their mental health. The sales are the highlight of their week. Many business transactions, other than stock take place at this facility. As ratepayers, we have a large investment in our sale yards, and I for one would be very reluctant to lose the business that this facility generates, tangible and intangible. Australia is a vast country and although IT meets many requirements how does the RSPCA suggest that someone like myself – with no computer – buys one ram, or for that matter sell one? Smaller farmers are highly unlikely to be able to describe their stock to their advantage. Selling on-line is complicated, and does mean that animals are not inspected for health and ear tags etc. I foresee diseases and genetic tracing falling by the way-side. Many “small” farmers learn from chatting with the “big” boys about sheep, cattle, pest and pasture

management, where to buy wish seed for their situation, who is available as a shearer, tractor operator, etc. From the animal’s point of view, any mustering, loading, trucking is stressful. I was to have sold stock at a recent sale but the weather was appalling, so I chose not to put my animals through the stress, my agent said “What about the agents?” As a rate payer I would be happy to pay extra for our sale yards to be undercover - for the benefit of man and beast. I feel strongly that our sale yards could be less stressful if the area had protection from sun, rain, snow etc. I have visited other covered sale yards and everybody is so much more comfortable, including the LHPA officers and other workers. Let us upgrade rather than do away with our sale yards. Schools could visit a busy sale day as part of an excursion and maybe more useful suggestions for the future of the sale yards would surface. On the whole the general public have never visited the sale yards and perhaps it is time for publicity and pride of the asset be encouraged. I talked to a Dutch vet student at the sale years last month, contrary to what the RSPCA are reporting, he was full of praise and amazement of the treatment of animals, conditions, all so much better than the Dutch equivalent, interesting isn’t it? There’s a new way for you to connect all of the doctors and nurses involved in your healthcare – wherever you are in Australia. It’s called the eHealth record system. Up until now every clinic or hospital you have visited has maintained a separate record of your health. Now, with an eHealth record, you can supplement these files by linking key information about you. Plus, if you’ve had the conversation and become an organ and tissue donor, the details of your decision can be included in your eHealth record too. So no matter where you are in Australia – or which doctor or specialist you visit – a secure online summary of your healthcare information will be available 24/7 to assist in your diagnosis and treatment. Best of all it’s free and it’s available now.

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST COOMA-MONARO SHIRE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT TASK FORCE

designs!

Cooma-Monaro Shire Council is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified and experienced people to join the Cooma-Monaro Region Economic Development Task Force. The task force, once formed, will be asked to devise a long-term strategic plan and options for the economic development of the shire within the Cooma-Monaro region, reporting to council within a six-month timeframe. Background Prior to and following the community-based Integrated Planning and Reporting (IP&R) process of 2011/2012, there was significant and speculative discussion in the business and general community concerning the potential for economic development in Cooma and the region. In particular, discussion focused on the professional process that Cooma-Monaro Shire Council should undertake to achieve a balance between issues such as quality of life, conserving our environment, sustainable infrastructure, economic development and employment opportunities. Naturally, these processes must be undertaken in line with the State Government’s planning guidelines and the strategic community plans as identified in the IP&R process. Council’s strategic objective is to encourage and facilitate population and enterprise growth in the local and regional areas, with Cooma as the regional centre. To this end, council is seeking expressions of interest from individuals and stakeholder interests with the skills and experience to contribute to the task force and its aims. Further details and an EOI information package can be obtained by phoning Lee Evans on 6455 1706. Expressions of interest should be lodged with the undersigned by close of business Friday, 22 March, 2013:

Die Fledermaus is coming to Jindabyne The South Australia Co-Opera – Opera on the Move - is returning with a wonderful production of Johann Straus’ on Saturday March 23 under the auspices of the Country Women’s Association Jindabyne Branch. The performance is to be a branch fund raising event. To be held at The Station Resort, Jindabyne, this delightful opera sung in English, is set in the glamorous high society of the 1920s Art Deco Australia. In a prologue, Dr Falke tells

how his best friend Eisenstein, after a drunken masked ball, leaves the Doctor naked in the centre of town with only his mask to cover his crown jewels. This hideous embarrassment in front of the whole town requires revenge! Thus the stage is set for the wonderful music of the Waltz King, Johann Strauss, to lead us on a merry musical chase, with a cast of loveable characters. The ticket cost is $40 for the Opera only; $65 for Dinner and Opera. You will be able to

purchase a drink from the bar, partake of a two-course dinner, enjoy the opera (sing along if you like) and then socialise afterwards with coffee and cake and meet the cost. Accommodation at an incredibly reasonable rate of $75 only nightly rate, is also available (book direct with The Station) so you don’t have to drive home. For more information contact Barbara Daley – 6456 2934 or gb.daley@optusnet.com.au or Carole Morris – 6456 2888 or rimrock@aapt.net.su.

Boco Rock Wind Farm holds consultative committee meeting The newly established Boco Rock Wind Farm Community Consultative Committee (CCC) met for the first time on Friday February 15. The CCC has been established as an additional consultation channel to allow the community and the wind farm team to share information about the project. The CCC is chaired by Margaret MacDonald-Hill who has significant experience chairing such committees in the coal and gas sectors. The committee comprises representatives from the local community, Cooma Monaro Council and Bombala Council. Ed Mounsey, Head of Development at Wind Prospect CWP, and Boco Rock Wind Farm Project Manager is also on the committee. Ed Mounsey commented

“The CCC provides a great forum to get together with representatives of the community, to share information about the project in an open manner.” “Our team has had extensive contact with the local community over the years we’ve been developing the project. We look forward to ongoing conversations and consultation with local landholders, neighbours, council, authorities and the wider community right through construction and operation. The CCC will provide an excellent conduit for those conversations” said Ed Mounsey. Details of CCC participants, along with minutes from the first meeting, will be uploaded to the project website www.bocorockwindfam.com.au in the coming weeks.

Koala survey public meeting Volunteers are sought to join Cooma-Monaro Shire Council (CMSC) and the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) in conducting surveys to map koala habitat on the Monaro. Residents and landholders are invited to attend public meetings at Jerangle, Numeralla and Cooma later this month to discuss the goals and methods of koala survey work. CMSC project manager Mark Adams says community participation is critical to the success of the program. “Surveys begin in early March and will run for several weeks. Volunteers are welcome to join for any amount of time they can spare,” Mr Adams said. “Survey work is not strenuous but basic walking fitness is essential and the more volunteers we have the more information we can gather about local koalas and their habitat. “We already know one brittle gum and one scribbly gum species are important to koala on the Monaro, but these surveys will enlighten us about other trees that support these iconic animals. “Landholders are very welcome at the public meetings and we’ll be happy to discuss the koala surveys at length.” OEH Koala Recovery coordinator Chris Allen says koala surveys are important and provide volunteers with a rewarding experience. “The main task undertaken by volunteers is

searching through forest litter for koala pellets or droppings, but we stay alert for other evidence including seeing the animals themselves,” Mr Allen said. “Volunteers can expect a sharing, informationrich experience helping us map the distribution of koalas as well as the eucalypt communities that may be important. “Once the surveys are completed we will analyse factors such as temperature, altitude, topography, geology, rainfall and disturbance history and these results will be used to shape the Cooma-Monaro Shire Council Koala Plan of Management.” This survey is a partnership between the community, council and government agencies to better understand koala habitat on the Monaro and is partly funded through an Environmental Trust grant. Please contact Mark Adams at CMSC on 6455 1912 for more information.

Adaminaby Easter Fair

Planning for the 2013 Easter Fair is bubbling along with the Committee meeting on a regular basis. Each year the Fair gets bigger and better with more stalls and things to see and do. The Adaminaby Easter Fair stalls represent very good value for the stallholders as they are only $20. Spaces are filling fast, to enquire ring Lyn on 0413097244 The ducks for the ever popular Wacky Quacky Duck Race have all been checked and are raring to go. This year first prize is $700 for a $2.00 investment. The various competitions are being organised including the Dog High Jump for both large and small dogs. Fisherman can get involved in the Trout Tossing competition or you can form a team and enter the Tug of War. Most of these competitions are free to enter. The popular petting farm will be there as will the blow-up castle etc. Adaminaby Has Talent has some fabulous sponsors in Monaro Books, Bush Basics, Cooma School of Music

and Cooma Toy World. For more information about this contact Ms Helene Cronin on 6454 2506. This year the CWA is sponsoring the Young Entrepreneurs who are young people aged 18 years and under who can have a stall on the CWA grounds. The CWA is also sponsoring the Easter Bonnet parade. To book a stall for a Young Entrepreneur, ring Judy on 6454 1624. Great food and produce will also be on offer. The Bowlers with their BBQ, the CWA with their tea and scones as well as the shops all putting on specials for the day. The Old Bank will be open. Of course there are a number of stalls selling delicacies and the famed Batlow apples will be there plus some new surprises. To round off the day, why not visit the Snowy Scheme Museum and see the terrific work done to preserve the history of the Snowy Scheme. The Museum will be open from 10 am to 2 pm.

Country music festival The Monaro Country Music Muster, again hosted by the Cooma Rotary Club, will be held in Cooma over the Easter weekend. The proceeds of this year’s Muster will go to the recently formed Community Chest, which will give assistance to those in the CoomaMonaro and Snowy River Shires, who have ill health and can’t get assistance through other areas of support. On Friday from 12pm, there’ll be country music in the Park, sponsored by the Cooma Visitor’s Centre - so bring a chair in case the grass is damp. On Saturday, a Quilt and Craft Expo and entertainment will be held at the Cooma Monaro Railway Station from 10am til 4pm. Saturday night’s concert at the Ex-Services Club beginning at 7pm, will feature local

and out of town recording artists as well as other talented locals. Easter Sunday will be celebrated this year with an Easter Sunday Rotary Market in Centennial Park from 9am. til 1pm. You’re welcome to have a stall at the usual stall charge. There’ll also be free country music. Please bring a chair or rug. After the Market, a Walk-up concert will be held at St. Pauls Church Hall in Commissioner St. commencing at 2pm. If you can sing or play an instrument, come along and entertain us. On Easter Monday, another Walkup concert will be held at the Cooma Country and Bowling Club from 10am. We hope many will enjoy Easter in Cooma 2013. The keynote speaker this year was Professor James Rowe, the CEO of Sheep CRC, at the University of New England, Armidale. After a breakfast at Hazeldean, Allan Casey of the NSW Department of Primary Industry was the first speaker. His entertaining and informative topic was ‘Looking after your worker rams’. Local broker, Gordan Litchfield, of Gordon Litchfield Wool, then addressed the audience, on volatile wool process – fixing the problem, forward selling and how to even out a volatile market. Professor Rowe addressed the audience on ‘the brave new world of DNA’, or how generics and genomics is delivering better sheep through The Sheep CRC. After the breakfast and information session, Hazeldean conducted its fourth annual elite short wool ram sale. Far right: Jim Litchfield with keynote speaker Professor James Rowe. Above right: Allan casey discusses ram care; Below right: Colin Murdoch inspects the sale rams.

Mobile phones are getting bigger, aren’t they? I’m only mentioning this because I have been on the hunt for a smaller one and trust me, they are hard to find. It’s all because of the screen size apparently. Mobile phone companies have convinced us that we all want to do even more stuff from our mobiles 24/7 which naturally warrants huge screens to see it with but isn’t that why we have computers? I mean, I can do a lot from my phone (assuming I’m standing in the right spot on the hill behind the house) but other than calls and texts I don’t bother with the other stuff because I can do it a lot more comfortably from my computer which has a much bigger screen. I will be able to do even more once the internet is available to me here but that’s another story. Anyway,

the thing is that people today are so addicted to being able to access emails, Facebook, YouTube, etc, at the drop of a hat that they will happily carry around something the size of an exercise book and then still suss out even bigger offerings because hey, check out the size of that screen! It’s really frustrating for me because I want a smaller phone than the one I have now even though my kids keep telling me the one I have now is like, really small. Well it isn’t in my opinion. It is three times the size of the cute little flip phone I had used for many years and would still be using it if it hadn’t suddenly died on me. But then, my kids are into the screen size thingy and just don’t understand my desire for “smaller”. To be fair, I did see two small phones recently but I wasn’t thrilled with either their looks or

design. Compared to the flash of the larger models, these were down right plain and I don’t know if it’s deliberate or not but I do know that I don’t just want a smaller phone, I want a smaller phone that looks good and I don’t think that’s too much to ask. Once upon a time phones were small and good looking so why not now? I want one that looks nice! So the hunt’s still on and what I’m hoping for now is that some of the really snazzy concept ideas I’ve come across from time to time might eventually make it onto the market. One in particular is so exactly me that I’m crossing toes and fingers that it will make it into production because I really, really want it. It’s compact and incredibly funky so please, please let it turn up somewhere soon but preferably here in Australia first. I’ll pay whatever they ask if it does.

It is open the for 2013 Brittany was absolutely delighted. “I males and females, 20 to 27 years old who love the show. I have been going ever since work in a rural-related industry. If you would I was little, it is a good chance to catch up like to nominate someone for 2014 visit the with everyone and it is really impressive to Show’s website for details.

Special Guest, Canberra Raider, Brett White will be on hand to judge eveyone’s favourite Dalgety Show event, the Arthur Costello Memorial Tug-O-War, named in honour of Brett’s grandfather. Not letting its historical role fade away into obscurity, this year as Canberra celebrates its centenary, we remember that in 1904 it was Dalgety that was confirmed as the site for the Nation’s future capital. It remained so for four years until in 1908 the House of Representatives selected Yass-Canberra as the site over Dalgety, 39 votes to 33. Most Dalgetyians, while proud of this claim to fame, are quite glad Dalgety is not the capital. To celebrate this link with Canberra the Dalgety Show Society invited local boy come, Canberra Raider NRL star, Brett White to officially open the show. Born in Jindabyne and growing up

in Berridale, White is very familiar with the Dalgety show having visited many times as a kid – even entering his paintings in the school aged art competition. “It is such a wonderful honour” said White about being asked to be the official show opener. Brett will be spending some time with the kids activities, giving all youngsters a chance to meet him and he will be overseeing the Arthur Costello Memorial Tug-OWar event, named in honour of Brett’s grandfather. So don’t miss this opportunity to meet this legend of rugby league. You might even get an autograph.

Sheep health statements are mandatory at Cooma saleyards

New sheep health arrangements are in place at Cooma saleyards. As of January 1, all sheep being sold through the Cooma Saleyards must be accompanied by a Sheep Health Statement. Please note the following important points: • Current Sheep Health Statements can be obtained from your livestock agent, the LHPA office or downloaded from www.farmbiosecurity.com.au under the “declarations and statements” tab. Do not use old statements. • Sheep Health Statements are required in addition to the National Vendor Declaration/Waybill. • The statement is a legal document. It needs to be completed accurately and signed. • Both sides of the statement need to be completed. The Cooma-Monaro district is an OJD medium prevalence

area (Category A: score 2). • Assistance in completing forms can be sought from your livestock agent or LHPA staff. The sheep health statement is a biosecurity tool that must be completed by the seller with accurate information about the health status of the sheep that they are selling with regards to Ovine Johnes Disease, Footrot and Lice, and any treatments the animals have received. Sheep buyers can request to see the statement to ensure they are buying sheep of a known health status. If you have any queries regarding the sheep health statement, or any other livestock health matter call the South East LHPA offices on 6452 1122 Cooma or 6458 3055 Bombala.

I am pleased to announce to Southern NSW woolgrowers that you can deliver your clip to our Yass or Cooma stores, I will look after it. Ian Sharp, NSW Technical Manager

YOU Prosper

Can you get 8% to 13% returns? There is no doubt you can, but I personally would not invest in a property just for rental returns, you must have all the box’s ticked for sustainable capital growth. But there is a number of locations in Australia right now where you can have the best of both worlds, strong rental returns of up to 13% and Capital Growth. But you won’t find that in a capital city.

HERE’S A LITTLE CLASSIC A great investment opportunity that will give you a better return than the banks • All units currently tenanted • 4x1 bedroom and

But if you would like to get the perfect combination of yield and exponential growth you need to look at investing in cities that are regional service centres for mining with other diversified industries. I know I have written about this before and many readers have contacted me, educated themselves and invested in quality properties and are on their way to financial independence! I just wanted to drill it home one more time. If you want to secure your future and do it sooner take advantage of this unique time in our history.

THE WORLDS FASTEST GROWING ECONOMY. CHINA China is currently the world’s fastest growing economy approx. 10% a year over the past 30 years. The latest figures show that China’s economy is set to grow by a mind blowing 150% between now and approx. 2025. China is urbanizing, which means they are moving in masses from the country to the cities. Here are some growth projections • China’s urban population is expected to swell by up to 400 million by 2025 as workers and their families migrate from the rural towns to cities. • By 2025 there will be 221 Chinese cities that have at least 1 million people living in them (the whole of Europe has only 35 cities with over 1 million people). • 5 million buildings will are expected to be constructed by 2025. • Up to 50,000 skyscrapers will be erected – the equivalent of building 2 Chicago’s every year. • As many as 97 new airports are to be built. • 1 million kilometres of new road will be laid – that’s enough to travel around the Earth 25 times! • 28,000 kilometres of metro rail will be constructed. • This information was found in 21st century education. What raw materials are required to handle such development 1. Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), 2. Iron Ore, 3. Thermal Coal, 4. Alumina, 5. Coking Coal, 6. Nickel, China is out of control let alone India, this will drive the biggest property investment boom in history, don’t miss this opportunity there is selected cities for you to benefit.

St Patrick’s Parish School competed at the regional swimming carnival at Narooma last Thursday, with several swimmers winning through to the next level of competition. Pictured above, top, is Amber Martin-Smith and above, Lachlan McGufficke.

Canberra Raiders meet local juniors

Last Thursday, representatves of the Canberra Raiders NRL side visited Cooma to hold workshops with local schools. Hosted by the Cooma Stallions, the Raiders players joined some skills training for local juniors at Nijong Oval and later met with senior players and supporters at Cooma Ex-Services Club.

Cooma women’s bowls Tuesday was the start of the Major Pairs and boy what a hot humid morning we had. U Roberson, M Power got off to a great start against H Peuker, M D’Amico and found themselves leading 12-1 on end four. Helen’s team won the next four ends to be only three down on end eight. Marg and Una plodded on and led 17-10 again on the 12th but not to be outdone, Maureen and Helen put the pressure on and bought the score to 16-17 on end 15. Two of the last three ends to Una gave them enough to finish 19-17. Great game girls. O Jebbink, L West played V Clark, M Tucker, although Olga was able to win, most of the ends were only by one.

Val used her ability to drive into the head on many occasions to cut the score down. Olga winning 18-5. Last year’s winners M Zasso and L Snell were up against the new combination of R Steinfort and G Caldwell. Gwen and Rulie certainly showed they are a team not to be taken lightly, leading from end two and finishing 23-10 . A great effort girls. In a game between the Seniors H Walker and K Sach and Juniors C Meillon and D Russell. Cheryl and Dawn got off to a good start but age didn’t weary the determination of Kath and Hazel when the scores locked at 12 all on end 17, one shot on the last end got Cheryl over the line on a very low scoring game 1312. Once again it was a good tight game, well done!

Having a great game of triples were L Keys playing a swinging lead for both sides was never going to lose anyway. The team with J Upton, M Obermaier got off to a nine-nil start, but D Fraser and G Connelly found their line and distance and by end 11 it was 10 all. Julie’s team picked up five shots on the last end, a fitting end to draw 16 all. A great way to end a fun day. Singles Entries will close next week so please put your name up on board if you want to play, any financial members are welcome. Fours are also up so form a team and put your names up. Good luck to all the girls playing in the District pairs on Wednesday, hoping we have some winners to go on to next round.

Noel Barrett 91.3 and Damien Doyle 90.6. With handicaps, Frank won from Noel and Damien. Next week shooting will be from 300yds, provided that enough members are coming, Please let Noel know by Thursday evening.

Lodge and Storta into finals In the semi final of the Cooma Club’s major pairs played last Saturday, Wayne Lodge and Mel Storta had the start hey must have dreamed about when they were in front 13/2 after nine ends against Peter Marsicano and Ross Russell. A revival by Peter and Ross had them trailing by just three shots, 10/13. Wayne and Mel then skipped away again and went on to win a place in the finals 22/114, where they will play Neil McGregor and Peter Schroder for the title next Saturday at 1pm. Also next Saturday will be the first round of the minor singles so be prepared to play if you have entered. The draw was to be done by yesterday. In social bowls on Saturday, Colin Whiting, Mario Frezza and Margherita Zasso were unstoppable in the early stages of their match with Max Povey, Alby Marshall and Geoff Venables when they set up a 15/0 lead and were never headed to eventually win 24/14. Simon Schoon, Daphne Buckley and Colin Roberson had an up and down match against visitors Dudly Hunt, Keith Goodwin and Paul Cannell. Six shots to Paul’s team on end 17 gave then a lead which was short-lived. However, to round off a very enjoyable game with the scores at 20/20. In district pennants played on Sunday, all completed despite the threatening weather. Jindabyne defeated Cooma 14 ½

pts to 1 ½; Adaminaby defeated Cooma 25pts to 1pt. In Monaro Shield, Cooma 2 defeated Nimmitabel 5pts to nil and Cooma 1 defeated Jindabyne 4pts to 1pt. Congratulations to Geoff Venables on winning the badge draw on Friday – a fitting reward for a member who does so much voluntary work on the greens and surrounds. Don’t forget the Classic Pairs on March 14 and 15 and the Cooma Open Triples on March 23 an 24. Entry forms and details are on the notice board. Pictured, Wayne Lodge and Ross Russell.

Klim drops in on Sportspower Dead heat for U/6 girls

Olympic champion swimmer, Michael Klim, dropped in to Cooma Sportspower last Saturday to say hello to Col Langdon and his team. Sportpower will soon be stocking Michael Klim’s new product, the Milk men’s skin care range, which includes sunscreen. He is pictured with Col, Sue and Ben Langdon, Chloe Geach and Hughie Allen.

Nevaeh Asanovski and Kate Maurier looked like young Olympic Athletics as they lined up for the 50ms sprint. Both girls strode to the start line ready to give their all, on the SET command the girls froze until the air recoiled to the sound of the starter’s gun. Resembling two young Greek Goddess they flew off the starting line together and swiftly moved into silhouettes of each other as they careered down the track until the concentration was broken as the girls crossed the finish line, posting a time of 11.24 seconds. Nevaeh achieved a Personal Best for her effort and Kate’s time was third fastest time for the season. The U/7 50m heats were an extremely close contest in both the boys and girls. In the boys heat less than 3.50sec separated the field as they crossed the finish line, with Angus Wood taking out the event in 9.81 sec with Stephen Davis a whisker behind Angus with 9.99 sec. Then followed Gus Brabham 10.25 sec and Callum Davis 10.57 sec. Another two exciting finishes occurred in the U/7 girls sprints between Adel Lunt and Molly Norris, both going to Molly by the smallest margin you can have in athletics track events 1/100 of a second. That translates to 5 cms in both the 50m and 70m. Molly clocked 10.37 sec for the 50m and 14.75 sec for the 70m and Adel times, for 50m 10.38 sec and 14.76 sec over the 70m.

The two girls were extremely close in the Long Jump with Adel taking out the event by 6 cms with a leap of 2.50m and Molly 2.46m. U/9 Girls produced another heart stopper finish to their 70m dash with three girls flashing across the line within inches of each other. The three girls were Jessie Lunt, Jessica Norris and Rachelle Roberts, with Jessie Lunt able to forge ahead over the final 10m in 13.22 sec and the two girls dead-heating for second in 13.44 sec and Sariah Clifford in fourth place with 16.58 sec. The U/10 Girls also produced an electrifying finish to their 100m race, with Taylah Maurier edging ahead of Brianna Rankin over the final stages of the race to clock 18.34 sec and Brianna 43 cms from Taylah’s shoulder, clocking 18.42 sec. In the 400m, the top six outstanding results on the night were U/15 Kate Hobbs with 1m 17.29 sec, U/12 Bailey Rogers 1m21.69 sec, U/12 Alyssa Zusak 1m21.64 sec, U/11 Nicholas Zusak 1m25.06 sec, U/8 Kristian Zusak 1m27.52 sec , U/11 Emma McDonald 1m28.46 sec and U/9 Reuben Hooper 1m29.81 sec . The top field events performances were; U/10 Boy Jordan Davis 3.71m in the Long Jump, Nicholas Zusak 8.08m at the Triple Jump, Taylah Maurier Shot Put with 6.03m, U/13 Liam Rankin heaving the discus over 23.40m and Bailey Rogers 4.28m in the U/12 Long Jump.

Berridale defeats the Cats In last Saturday’s match, Cooma Cats won the all-important toss and elected to bowl. Under heavy skies with the forecast of heavy rain batting second could be most beneficial. Berridale got off to a steady start being 0/30 after 11 overs before S Wood (2/18) removed Hearn (24). A collapse followed with Berridale slumping to 3/37. S Freebody (59) and J Riley (25) restored the Berridale innings putting on 49 for the fourth wicket in quick time. The Cats were bowling some good line and length and with the addition of a damp slow outfield lifting the run rate was becoming a bit of a problem for the Berridale batsman as Berridale got to 4/100 after 37 overs. The tail eventually got the run rate moving in the right direction and even with the loss of S Freebody in the closing overs via a nice stumping off the bowling

of T Wall (2/13) Berridale posted a very competitive 8/158. With Berridale sporting a handy bowling attack, the game plan was a fairly simple one of keeping it tight and let the scoreboard pressure bring about the rash shot. The Cats got off to a good start with K Regan (7) and M Hynes (31) having little trouble against the new ball taking the score along to 43. A Bruce was bought into the attack and while Alex might go for a few runs his sharp short pitched bodyline type bowling often brings a wicket as well as the odd bruise. This week was no different as he removed Regan and hit M Hynes with a short ball which rattled the young opener. With the breakthrough done the bowling pair of A O’Keeffe (1/9 off 9) and J Riley (3/9 off 9) applied the brakes to the Cats’ run rate as the pair helped by some good fielding kept the Cats middle order pegged

down. As the run rate started to become an issue, the wickets followed with Riley dismissing the key Cats batsmen of S Wood, C Khoury and G Van Der Platt. With the tail in sight, D Asanovski (29) and K Khoury (16) began a rescue mission putting on 49 and getting the Cats into a position where victory was a possibility until Asanovski was caught in the deep off the bowling of A Bartell (1/23). M Robinson (2/5) cleaned up the Cats tail taking the last two wickets with consecutive balls. Cats all out for 132. 3 points J Riley; 2 points S Freebody; 1 point D Asanovski . Pictured, action from the game.

Wet weather teases cricketers Another weekend and another weekend hampered by wet weather. The Clash of the Codes was once again postponed after rain on Friday morning prevented a wicket being prepared. The match is now to be played on Sunday afternoon at Rotary with the option of taking it to one of the synthetic wickets if the wet weather sticks around. Saturday’s matches all got under way with the drizzle coming and going

throughout the day. All of Saturday’s matches were completed with a couple of upsets which have given the table a real shake up. Berridale 8/164 defeated Cooma Cats all out 130, Alpine 9/192 Tim Williams knocking up a ton defeating Jindabyne all out 97 and Coffeys picking up maximum points with an outright win over the Cooma Cannons. Sunday’s Treloar Griffen shield was a

wash out after overnight and morning This week’s matches rain gave little chance of any play and the Berridale V Cooma Cannons @ Berridale Jindabyne V Coffeys @ The Station matches were called off. Cooma Cats V Alpine @Snowy Table: With the top four now set the battle is on in Coffeys 91 earnest to secure the much wanted minor Jindabyne 87 premiership with all four teams having a Cooma Cats 84 mathematical chance of taking out the Berridale 82 minor premiership. The Place of Pace

Cooma golf report by Garry Atkinson During the week stablefords were the order of the day, rain dominated the week and the A reserve pennant team represented Cooma Golf Club in tight matches with Gold Creek, winning at Gold Creek - amazing. B grade was taken out by regular winner John Alexander 37 points and C grade was taken out by another smooth swinging golfer Eglis Freimanis with 40 points. Ball winners went down to 33 points with Frank McKnight just squeezing in. Nearest the pin on the ninth was won by Brian Searle and Lindsay Blewitt hit it very close on the 17th. Next Saturday sees the 4BBB Championships over three grades. A big event for all members. Sunday and Wednesday are both individual medley stablefords with visitors most welcome. Junior golf is on this Sunday at 2pm. Members are asked to lend a hand if they can. See you on the greens.

B11 - your local speedway car in action at Bega. Sapphire Speedway was the place to be over the weekend with Far South Coast Motor Bike Club having a two-day race meeting and Speedway Cars on Saturday night. The Hite’s and the Stafford’s were again on fire and the ones to beat, competition was strong. Alan Hite is taking a break from second drivers after an operation and Wayne Holdsworth was lucky enough to score his first drive. It’s believed he had great fun in the loose gravel with his drifting very entertaining. A great effort Wayne for your first race, we look forward to racing you again. Lenny Dixon was doing well in Aussie 6’s in B11, against Arron Hite and the Stafford’s, until

he entered turns three and four a little too hot and took out the tyre wall, but the show was spectacular. His overall placing for the meet was fourth which is an improvement for only his fourth race meeting. The last event on the night was second drivers. Wayne had been sideways all night trying to catch up to his sister. One of the Stafford Young Guns got a little out of shape on the last lap so Pauline Bolton pounced at his mistake and finished second. Her first podium finish in B11, she was all smiles. Thanking all her sponsors (Cooma Auto Electrics, Matt Barnes Automotive and Mainstreet Clothing), committee, volunteers, competitors and The Monaro Post for their continued support and encouragement.
