Celebrating Australia Day Across the Monaro, local communities have recognised the efforts made by volunteers to make our communities stronger and better and honoured the achievements of community groups, events and sports people, young and old. Australia Day celebrations last Saturday were held in Adaminaby, Berridale, Bombala, Bredbo, Cooma, Dalgety, Jindabyne, Michelago, Nimmitabel and Numeralla. Several local residents took the big step to become Australian Citizens. Picture above, award winners in Cooma-Monaro Shire gather on the bandshell stage with Australia Day ambassador Sandra Bates and her husband Peter, local ambassador Kevin Dunne, Mayor Dean Lynch and Cr Martin Hughes. More volunteers from the BlazeAid organisation will be coming and going from the area over the next month and will be working alongside farmers to cleanup, rebuild fences and lift the spirits of local farming families, whose properties have been effected by the recent Yarrabin fires. The main aim of the organisation is to make sure farmers in the area can be productive once more.

“The golden rule is that the farmer is always right, explained Paul Foregeard, who is the BlazeAid coordinator for this area. BlazeAid is very focused on engaging the local community and using local knowledge for direction. This ensures that both the volunteers and farmers get the most out the system possible. “Volunteers get a strong sense of comradeship and also food out of the experience, Mr Foregeard said.

If people want to volunteer they need to register with BlazeAid first. To do this either contact Dean Lynch or go to the BlazeAid website at www. There will be an blazeaid.com. average of 20-30 Below, Paul Foregeard and Mayor Lynch. volunteers stationed at Nimmitabel

Long-serving Cooma-Monaro Shire Councillor, Winston Churchill Phillips, or ‘Tick’ as he prefers to be called, said his Order of Australia Medal is as much a community award as a personal one. Cr Phillips’ award was announced last Saturday and he was congratulated at both the Nimmitabel and Cooma celebrations. While the winner is keen to keep his identity under wraps for personal reasons, he was proud to say out loud that he’s keen to start spending his $1,352,954 cash prize. “I’m looking forward to it, he said. “I can’t wait to be able to do something with it. That “something includes buying a beach house with an ocean view and a swimming pool where his kids and grandkids can visit. The winner is also excited to be able to invest some of the money. The winner didn’t even know he had won the jackpot until the day after he had

2013 Jindabyne Irish Festival

General Manager, JOE VESCIO

There has been a lot of talk around the Shire about the footpath along the foreshore in Lake Jindabyne so I thought it would be a good idea to clarify the situation. A combination of high water levels in Lake Jindabyne along with a number of extreme weather events through 2012, including flooding of the Foreshore, resulted in serious undermining of the Lake Jindabyne Foreshore shared pathway; in particular those areas opposite the caravan park and Horizons Hotel. While Council was aware of the problem in the early stages, the conditions across Lake Jindabyne continued to impact upon the foreshore and as a result, bank erosion increased. The problems became steadily worse to the extent that Council staff were forced to collapse the footpath in December 2012 to avoid further damage and protect pedestrians. Council also met with members of the local 355 committee on Wednesday 19 December 2012 to discuss the problem and outline the process by which repairs to the footpath could commence. A report was submitted to an extraordinary meeting of Council on Friday 18 January 2012 where it was agreed that the project could be achieved in two (2) stages with funding assistance from Section 94 funding. The first stage, to start early February, will be to restore and protect the embankment from future erosion. The second phase, which will be planned and budgeted for in the 2013/2014 Operation Plan will address the issues with the shared pathway. Council estimates the work in phase one (1) will take approximately three (3) weeks and will prohibit all movement along the affected section of pathway until works are complete.

The women and children came from Irish clubs in Sydney, Dubbo and Narromine. The 14th annual Jindabyne Irish Festival was held last weekend, with a full program of fun and activities for visitors and locals alike. With the town full of Irish music and dancing and the John Connors Oval busy with a range of different sports, the weekend was great success. Launching into their new careers

News

7

From the desk of the General Manager, Mr John Vucic Cooma-Monaro Shire Council

A helping hand Pictured from left , some of the students from Monaro High who received university offers: Shashank Bokil, Gabriella Cigana, Daniel Morassutti, Eva Klima, Billy Browne, Kaity McDonald and Chris Gardiner. Launched out of their school textbooks and into the ‘real world’, Monaro High School’s class of 2012 are in the midst of accepting and deferring university offers and making life-changing decisions about potential careers. Although 10,000 students from NSW and the ACT missed out on a main round tertiary offer, many students have a reason to celebrate their success as 65 percent of applicants received main round offers. Many Monaro High School students received University Offers either as early entry or in the main round of university offers and were accepted into a vast range of degrees from Economics to Photography. A career in Archaeology is Miranda Evans dream and a Combined Bachelor of Science and Arts at the University of Sydney, majoring in anatomy and histology and archeology and ancient history, should get her there. Ryan Constance who hopes to pursue a career as a Paramedic received an offer into a Bachelor of Nursing at Australian Catholic University in Canberra and is ultimately hoping to transfer to a duel degree in Nursing and Paramedicine in the future. An all round high achiever throughout high school, Taz Hudson has been accepted into a Bachelor of Laws and Science majoring in psychology at the Australian National University. Taz hopes to become a Humanitarian Lawyer from the experience and knowledge she will gain from her degree. Heath Millington has very high hopes, aiming to ultimately specialise in Psychiatry or Neurosurgery as his career. In the main round of offers Heath was accepted into a Bachelor of Science in Psychology at the Australian National University and he plans to do medicine after completing his psychology degree. Year 12, 2012 have the world at their feet quite literally, with some students degrees taking them overseas. Kaitlin McDonald, who has been accepted into a Bachelor of International Studies at the University of Western Sydney will be going to Berlin in December for an internship with the embassy there. Kaity hopes that this fantastic

experience will lead to a job at DFAT (Dept. Foreign Affairs and Trade). Careers with the Deputy of Foreign Affairs and Trade seem to be the most popular craze with Happi Human and also Chris Gardiner seeking jobs in this area. Happi will be one of the first people to enroll in the Vertical Degree of a Bachelor of Asia-Pacific Studies with a Master in Globalisation. The new degree is one of three ‘Vertical’ double degrees launched this year, which allow students to get a head start on higher education degrees. Chris Gardiner who is setting aside a career as a comedian will instead be completing a degree at the Australian National University. “I’ve been accepted into a Bachelor of being a Bachelor at the ANU Bachelor pad,” Chris joked. “Seriously though, at the moment it’s a Bachelor of Asia-Pacific studies and Arts, this year, but I’ll have to wait till the late round of offers to see if that changes.” Chris, like Happi intends to pursue a career with DFAT. For some, going to university straight out of Year 12 isn’t the most appealing idea and a gap year seems much more alluring. But for Shashank Bokil his gap year won’t be breezy with a Traineeship at Snowy Hydro in the Information Control Systems Department. Shashank was accepted into a Double Bachelor Degree of Commerce and Engineering however deferred. “I chose to take a gap year for a couple of reasons. To take a break, to earn some money and to get experience in the working environment of a company,” explained Shashank Suyash Adhikari made the decision to stay in Cooma and accept his offer of a traineeship at the Cooma Road and Traffic Authority despite receiving early entry offers into both a Bachelor of Environmental Science and a Bachelor of International Development Studies. Gabriella Cigana, is making a big move all the way to Melbourne to complete an Advanced Diploma of Photography at The

Fire under control With heavy rain over the last weekend, the Yarrabin bushfire is just about extinguished. The fire is fully contained and it’s just a matter of continuing to patrol and monitor it. Last week around 20 firefighters and two helicopters were stationed on the fire-ground, mopping up and blacking out hotspots, found from aerial surveys. Crews were from Bombala, The Snowy River Shires as well as NPWS RAFT crews. ‘Flir runs’ (surveys to find hotspots) will continue possibly over the next few weeks to ensure that the fire remains under control. It is essential that hotspots are put out as high winds and temperatures can turn these into more fires weeks from now. A community meeting will be held at Numeralla Hall 10am and at Kybeyan Hall at 2pm today. All residents and interested people are invited to attend the meeting at the location of their choice to hear about plans for recovery and rehabilitation post fire and to assist with any inquiries.

Photography Studies College in South Bank. “It’s a three-year course and after completing the Advanced Diploma, I can study for another three quarters of a year and receive a degree in photography, which I will decide if I need later on in the course. Also, I’m guaranteed a job after the course. I’m very excited!” Amongst these students there were also many others from Monaro High School accepted into universities far and wide in 2013, some of the many are listed below. Alex Bruce - Bachelor of Economics and Finance - Australian National University Jesse Grieg - Bachelor of Animal Science – University of New England Eva Klima- Bachelor of Applied Science in Human Biology – University of Canberra Bridie Mackay – Bachelor of Visual Arts and Design – Australian Catholic University Sydney Dara Austin Smith – Bachelor of International Business - Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology Jared Tonini – Bachelor of Information Technology – University of Canberra Caity Digges – Bachelor of Tourism University of Canberra Daniel Morassutti – Bachelor of Music and Sound Design – University of Technology, Sydney Billy Browne – Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning – University of Canberra Unfortunately not everyone who applied for university entry has received an offer in the early or main rounds, however it should be kept in mind that the late and final round offers are still to be released by the University Admissions Centre on January 30 and February 6. Whoever achieved their High School Certificate should be very proud and should keep in mind that there are many ways to pursue the career that they are seeking, whether that is through university or not. Year 12 2012 now have the world at their feet and very promising and exciting futures which lie ahead of them.

There has been a wonderful community response to the plight of local farmers and landholders affected by the recent bushfires. With so much damage to fencing infrastructure, the involvement of the BlazeAid organisation and its volunteers has been warmly welcomed. As most of you would be aware by now, a BlazeAid base camp is being established at the Nimmitabel Showground, given its proximity to the properties in the Kybeyan Valley that sustained the most damage. Council has been contacted by some residents of the Nimmitabel township, concerned at the possible effects an influx of visitors will have on the town’s water supply, especially with the current level 6 water restrictions that are now in place. I would like to reassure everyone there is an adequate supply of water to meet the town’s domestic needs but not, at this stage, for activities such as watering gardens (no hand-held hoses, fixed sprinklers etc) or washing cars. Council will continue to support the Nimmitabel community through the supply of non-potable water to the tank at the council depot in Bentley Street, Nimmitabel. If there are residents who are unable to obtain water from this tank, they should contact council on 6455 1801 as we may be able to provide assistance. An update on the Lake Wallace water supply project is being prepared and will be sent to Nimmitabel residents this week.

Our Citizens of the Year Each year council seeks to recognise those members of our community who demonstrate excellent leadership and citizenship and inspire us through their involvement and achievements for our residents and the wider community. Congratulations to Vernon Dunning (Citizen of the Year), Robert Shearer (Young Citizen of the Year), Elizabeth Laught (Special Achievement Award), Myrtle Boate (Sportsperson of the Year) and Jacob Suthern (Young Sportsperson of the Year) for their wonderful achievements and efforts. The Australian National Busking Championships was a deserving winner of the Community Event of the Year, while the Cooma branch of the CWA was recognised as the Community Group of the Year for its continued work in the community. The valued work of these unsung heroes and organisations who generously give their time, effort and expertise to assist others was acknowledged on Australia Day 2013 for their wonderful achievements and contributions to the community. Congratulations and heartfelt thanks to all the recipients. You do us proud!

Well, that’s another Australia Day done and dusted. Congratulations to the local award winners across the three shires. Once again, volunteers have been recognised for their contributions to our community. Without our volunteers, our community would be a much poorer place and much of what we enjoy could cease to be. The Postman continues to receive offers which are too good to be true (and even unbelievable), like the following email offer received this week: “You have not finished university? There is no prospect to get good job?... There are no problems. We will make correct documents of 100 % quality and you will get a job your dream. All you need is a dipl0ma cOnfirming your high qualification.”(sic) Or this one: “How are you getting on? To you speak that there are no vacancies and job for you? There is a problem decision. We will make the professional diploma necessary to you for 30 days. Only the original from good university.” (sic) The Postman is hoping these aren’t offers for a writing or English course. Still, it makes a change from being invited to share in a 15 million pound UK Lottery win. If only… Last week, it was revealed a survey had determined the best and worst Prime Ministers over the past 25 years. The result, across all age groups, was a resounding 35 percent for John Howard. The incumbent was bottom of the list, which is interesting as we start an election year. No doubt the heavy electioneering will begin soon. Let the lying begin…!

A Thank You to our Volunteers Dear Editor, The recent bushfires have caused significant damage to property and stock in our region and it is only due to the efforts of the Rural Fire Service, NSW Fire Brigade and NSW National Parks and Wildlife that further damage has been avoided. These services, as well as additional volunteers and landholders showed incredible courage in the face of these threats and helped to stop a catastrophe. On the behalf of the Monaro region I would like to thank all those that assisted in fighting the fires, as well as all those who worked to keep the community informed of the threat. While total stock losses are at this stage unknown, thankfully the region has avoided any loss of life. The resilient spirit of the local residents is something to behold, even in the midst of great tragedy the community is pulling together, supporting one another and remaining vigilant to the continued fire threat.

The NSW Government has arranged for assistance for those in fire affected areas, with grants available for those who have suffered loss of property and household items. Further grants are available for primary producers and small businesses that have also been affected by the fires. Inquiries about the disaster relief grants and the eligibility criteria may be made by calling 1800 018 444 While it appears that the worst of this disaster is over, I urge people to be vigilant over the coming weeks with the fire season yet to end. The thoughts and prayers of all in our community are with those who have suffered loss of property and stock during these disasters. John Barilaro MP

Australia Day Celebration 2013 At the 2013 Australia Day ceremony in Jindabyne, the Snowy River Shire Mayor John Cahill honoured the volunteers who make up fabric the Snowy River Shire community, including the brave volunteer fire fighters coming from 12 brigades, who risk life and limb to protect the homes and assets of others. During the 2003 bush fires, the Rocky Plains brigade was on active duty for 40 days and nights. Amongst the other groups of volunteers, were the Lions Clubs of Berridale and Jindabyne, the SES, the Flowing Festival, the Men’s Sheds, P & Cs, four Country Women’s Association branches, Dalgety Show Committee, Chambers of Commerce and many, many other people who give freely of their time. Australia Day Ambassador, the Light Heavyweight Boxing Olympian Rick Timperi, who arrived in Australia Rome, at

the age of four, gave a lighthearted account of his climb to success in the boxing ring to win two Gold, two Silver and three Bronze medals in international tournaments. He stressed the need for a strong infrastructure to succeed including the belief of others and in yourself to reach the goals. He said “Whilst reaching for the stars, you may not get there but you don’t come up with a mouthful of mud.” In accepting the honour of Snowy River Shire Citizen of the Year, Dr Geoffrey Cocker said he was very humbled by the Award. He went on to praise the back up of the staff at the Berridale surgery, the ambulance officers and in particular Ron Carey with whom he had worked for over thirty years, plus the backup of the Cooma doctors. Arriving from South Africa in 1976, Dr Cocker followed in the footsteps of Dr John Sheddon from whom he bought the practice. He

spoke of the challengers of being a country general practitioner – the long hours, the economics, the stamina required, and the need to purchase a surgery. “The success of the proposed multi medical purpose unit should not be taken for granted” he said. He added “It needs vision for the future to make it work.” Recognised for his work on the Youth Council, Jindabyne Central School student from Dalgety, Owen Pearson was awarded Young Citizen of the Year. Owen expressed his belief that by participating in the Jindabyne Youth Council, it was an opportunity to make a difference and he urged his peers to get involved. ‘Jindy Idol’ was voted Community Event of the Year. Mrs Del Draxl accepted the Award on behalf of Tim Draxl. Del expressed appreciation for the support shown by the sponsors and the community to make the event so successful. Funds raised

from ‘Jindy Idol’ go to funding scholarships for successful applicants aspiring to achieve in the sphere of performing arts. Applications are now being accepted for the 2013 ‘Jindy Idol”. Work on the construction of 580m of new watermain to serve the residents of East Cooma was completed in January. The new watermain replaced aging pipes that were built during the Snowy era. New consumer services were provided to 40 residences, the copper pipes replacing old galvanised pipes. Nine new services were under-bored on Yareen Road to minimise traffic disruption. The work was undertaken in Yareen Road, Wooran Street and Wangie Street South. Council staff, supported by the local contractors used on the project, would like to thank the residents for their support and care during the project which assured everyone’s safety.

MOBILE PHONE RECYCLING Some interesting data has emerged regarding mobile phone recycling habits in a new survey by MobileMuster. According to Rose Read, the recycling manager for MobileMuster, one-third (33 per cent) of NSW residents said they were holding onto their old mobile “just in case” they needed it. “As demand for more sophisticated mobile technology increases, old mobiles kept in drawers for a rainy day will become increasingly less likely to be used,” Rose said. If you have an old mobile phone lying around please bring it to Council Chambers in Commissioner Street or drop it off at the Cooma Landfill gatehouse to help reduce our environmental impact.

NEW REGULATIONS FOR POOL OWNERS In NSW, all swimming pools, including inflatable pools, capable of holding 300mm or more of water, are required by law to comply with Swimming Pool Amendment Act 2012.

Water can be used for domestic purposes only. Hand held hoses are banned. Re-used domestic water may be applied to gardens using buckets. McKenzies’ future looking much brighter A fresh, new start is what the McKenzie family need, and is now appearing more promising due to all the generous donations from the community. The family now have another chance for a good life in this great community thanks to generous donations and support from Monaro residents, as well as from people as far away as Sydney, Wollongong, Pambula and Nowra. Countless donations have been made over the last few weeks and the McKenzie family and Sensei Jim McDonald would like to extend their thanks to the community for their support. “I would say that what has been achieved in less than two weeks is remarkable,” says Sensei Jim McDonald. Monaro residents have really dug deep and their generosity has shone. At this current time (at the last count) the family now has approximately $3000 in cash donations. The whole family now has beds including bedding thanks to Anne Owers and Ruby and Damien from The St Vincent De Paul Organisation. A big thanks to Mission Australia, St Vincent De Paul, Debbie Chippendale from On Track Hobbies, Brett and Kim Simpson from Cooma Tool and Plant Hire, Assembly of

God Mission and others for various donations including a fridge, washing machine, dryer, vacuum cleaner, microwave, kitchen cutlery, crockery and even a George Foreman Grill. A big thanks to Philis Rawlinson, Anne Owers, Noel and Trish Holland, Enid Russel and many more who have brightened the McKenzie kids world with toys, books, bikes, scooters and even a new trampoline from Crystal Burchall to replace the one lost in the fire. “People’s generosity regarding toys has been incredible to say the least, we can’t bring the toys back but they have more than compensated for what has been lost,” says Sensei McDonald. The whole family now have enough clothes to see them through summer and winter with thanks to many generous donations from community members and from St Vincent De Paul. As the kids have been continuing with their homeschooling throughout the ordeal they have been given pencils, notebooks and reading materials. Large cash donations and gift vouchers have been donated by The Snowy Monaro Assembly of God Mission, Vera Davies from Bellissima, the Drover’s Rest and Kennels for a $150.00

Target voucher and John, the store manager of Woolworths with $350.00 of groceries and $100.00 gift voucher. A huge thanks is due to Cathy Wassink from C&C Storage who made this all possible by donating a storage space for larger items such as dining tables, chairs, 2 lounge suits and a TV and video player. Another big thank-you to Chris Hannah who worked overtime to set up the account for the family at Westpac Bank, all in 16 hours. The family also sends their thanks to anyone who provided meals including Annabelle from Feed Café and Catering, The Chelsea Coffee Lounge, Anne Fabry from Moontree Health Food Store and Linden from Schmitt who donated 2 Christmas hampers, which were much appreciated by the children. Adeline Perrett has also donated camping gear. A big thankyou from Sensei McDonald and the McKenzie family also to Cathy Gray from Human Services, Justine Pielli from the Commonwealth Bank, Jim Walker-Broose, Debbie Chippendale, Gerry from HomeSpecs, Murray and Ann who offered their car, Meagan Fox, Elaine Schofield, Liz Dee and Ema Stirling from Canberra Water Castle. Sensei Jim

McDonald apologises for anyone who he has missed thanking in this list. The biggest thank you however, is due to Sensei Jim McDonald who has dedicated his time to ensuring the family’s recovery. However small, all donations to the McKenzie family have made a huge difference to their recovery after their traumatic ordeal through the fires. Donations are still flooding in, however the McKenzie family are now moving towards the clearing and building phase before winter sets in. To help with donations you can now contact Geoff McKenzie instead of Sensei McDonald. Geoff’s telephone number is 0418205529. To donate money straight to the family’s bank account details are as follows - the account is in the name of Geoff & Nicole McKenzie -BSB 032720 account number 201675 please direct all money to this account.

The heroes (and Lucy) in the sky -Lisa Deas Over the past few weeks you may have noticed quite a few new additions to the sky surrounding our region. In the wake of the devastating Yarrabin bushfire there have been many counts of heroism, from the fire fighters on the ground, the RFS members managing the phones to the helicopter pilots in the sky, everyone has done their part. These pilots often remain faceless to us, even though they might water bomb our buildings or map out containment lines, we often can never put a face to the person who is flying high above us. During the course of

the fire there has been over nine aviation vehicles in operation out of the Snowy Mountains Airport, including seven helicopters and two fixed wing air craft. Recently we had the pleasure of interviewing one such pilot and his helicopter engineer off-sider at the Snowy Mountains Airfield. Lachlan Onslow, pilot and Dean Pohlmann, large machine engineer, have been in Cooma for the last two weeks helping to contain and control the Yarrabin bush fire. They both work for the Fleet Helicopter company that runs out of Armidale and it is safe to say that they both have a love affair with their chopper ‘Lucy’. The pair worked a solid 10 hour day since the fire began on Sunday 6, they return to the air field about four or five times a day to refuel, or every two hours as required. ‘Lucy’ is an ex-military machine and can carry no passengers, aside from the pilot and potentially his off-sider. The chopper is used for water bombing and may seem familiar to those who remember the helicopters

used in Vietnam. The machine got its name from a much loved hula girl figurine that has lived on the dashboard behind the sun visor for the past four years or more, although she has “gone at the hips” as Lachie put it, she will remain as a part of her namesake until the chopper is retired. That day is not likely to come in the near future as Dean mentioned, “We will just continue to refurbish her, she will never be replaced.” The boys had many stories to tell from their fire experience, pilot Lachie detailed his work when it came to the saving of several sheep. “We helped herd the sheep away from the fire,” he said, “I nudged them with my bucket to get them out the gate.” Lachie also waterbombed several of the sheep which no doubt helped to ensure their survival. ‘Lucy’ is the largest chopper that attended the Yarrabin bush fire, the bucket she carried could hold 1400litres and works with a valve that is controlled from the cock-pit, which opens and allows water to flow in from the bottom up. Both Lachie and Dean were

13

attending the northern fires before Christmas but were called to Cooma early in the year. We asked them about the much loved tale of the scuba diver who was caught in a helicopter bucket and this was deemed to be “definitely not true” by Lachie himself. The pair said that they receive their orders and are set on one task at a time, some of the other helicopters were responsible for things like mapping the fire, identifying the hot spots with an infrared camera and winching crews down to remote areas. The pilot himself can not decide to just water bomb a house, this decision is made by the air attack supervisor who then gives the orders to the pilot to do so. It is safe to say that these two are passionate about their work, they describe their helicopter as being ‘beautiful’ and they love what they do. The people of the Monaro Region are lucky to have such dedicated and hard working pilots on hand, without pilots and engineers like these, the fire crew in Cooma would have had an unthinkable task on their hands.

Celebrating 100 years of a quiet, enjoyable life Still speeding around the Yallambee Lodge on her 100th birthday, having only been there for four years, some would say that Ann Spears must hold the secret to longevity. However when asked what her secret is Mrs Spears replied, “There is no secret to it. But I don’t drink or smoke.” Mrs Spears has spent much of her life in Cooma, coming here with her husband who had a job on the Snowy Scheme. Born in Gundagai on January 24, 1913, Anne Spears reflects on how much has changed since then. “Everything has changed, especially the lives that teenagers lead, they are so different to when I was a teenager.” Instead of going to the pub for a drink on the weekend like many people in their late teens would do now, Mrs Spears recalls fondly spending her Sunday nights at the bottom of the old cinema singing in front of crowds. “I used to love to sing. I just don’t do it anymore though,” she said. From Gundagai to Bombala, to Cooma to Sydney and back again Mrs Spears has lived in many places but still calls Cooma home. “I love it here, I love the people here,” she said.

Having eight sisters, four children and eight grandchildren, Mrs Spears has a very large family despite tragically losing two of her daughters throughout her life. Mrs Spears spent her 100th birthday having lunch out with her nieces and nephews, proving how incredibly fit she is for her age. Yet to receive a letter from the Queen, Anne believes it won’t be coming. “I think it’s just a rumour, I’ve never heard of someone receiving a letter from the Queen when they turn 100,” she said, but hopefully she will be getting a pleasant surprise from the Queen or Governor General over the next week. “I’m lucky to still be alive,” she said, concluding that maybe the secret to longevity is simply just to enjoy life. “I’m a happy person and my life has been quiet but I’ve enjoyed it a lot.” Anne Spears celebrating her 100th birthday at Yallambee Lodge.

You might know Katie through her community involved family who frequently participate in local events, her father being a past president of the local Rotary Club and past owner of Nimmitabel Bakery. Katie fondly recalls past Nimmitabel shows where as a young girl she participated in horse riding and pie eating competitions. Since then however,

NIMMITABEL SHOW

Notorious for good quality sheep The Nimmitabel Show being the first of our local shows has become notorious for a good quality sheep show. Thanks to our valued sponsors we have over $2000 worth of prizes on offer at this year’s Nimmitabel Show Sheep section. We cater for March and August Shorn Stud Merino Sheep with separate classes. The Nimmitabel Show has always been very well supported by our local stud Merino breeders and we value their support and the high standard of exhibits with many of these sheep going onto the Canberra Royal, the Sydney Royal and the Bendigo Sheep Show, many achieving championships at these shows. We appreciate the cost of preparing sheep for shows and how difficult it is. However due to the high cost of feed we would like to remind competitors we do have an unhoused section and would like to build it up. Last year’s show the Merino

Flock ewes were well represented in numbers and quality and we hope we can build up this section. Gauging by the amount of Prime lambs that are sold at the saleyards in Cooma as well as Wagga Wagga saleyards, there is certainly a lot of prime lamb breeders on the Monaro, the stewards of the sheep section would welcome an increase in entries for this section. The Sheep section appreciates the support of our very valued sponsors, who have given over $2000 worth of prizes to offer at this years show, Ancare, who have donated three pots of sheep drench for the Grand Champion Ewe and Ram and Supreme Exhibit, Cooma Rural, Sullivan Family, Greenland Merino Stud, Elders, Landmark, Haylock Partners, MMA Breeders, Boudjah Stud, Rick Hain, Jemalong Wool and M & C Caldwell. We look forward to seeing all

Helping YOU Prosper Property Investment DIY or Not? There is no doubt you can easily buy property for investment purposes all you need to do is look on allhomes.com, and there is no doubt many of you have done well being a DIY investor, but how many people have had a horrific experience and lost money, stressed themselves out and lost time they can never get back. The fact is you can just DIY but to make maximum returns you need to get the education required! Why? To avoid all the traps and mistakes others make. Unfortunately many people do it themselves have a horrific experience sell the property for a loss and never invest again, and all this does is leave them in a terrible financial position for their future. Like most of Australian’s 86.6% according to Australian Bureau of Statistics will retire on a poverty income of approx. $16,000 and with no pension available in the near future this is scary. Things you need to know:• Firstly know that you can do it you just need to know how, sadly so many people do not act because they believe they can’t do it. But you can and you probably need too!

SRS breeding program at “Wallendibby” Delegate -case study Introduction Scott and Shelley Dunn live with their three children on the Merino breeding property, “Wallendibby”, at Delegate. Scott manages “Wallendibby” for Sir Michael and Lady Sally Nairn who live in Scotland but visit Wallendibby for extended periods each year. The flock currently comprises about 7,000 sheep. Scott buys rams for the Wallendibby flock from the SRS® Merino studs, Boxleigh Park (Bruce, Hugh and Geoff Taylor, Wellington, NSW and Australian Meat Merino (Jim Watts and Andrew Dowling, Moulamein, NSW).

and this seems incredible, I could go and buy 14 rams from Boxleigh Park which were barely 12 months old, drive them home, a nine hour trip, give them a day off, then shear them, then vaccinate and drench them two days later, and then join them at only 1.2 percent and get such high lamb marking percentages.” In 2011 and 2012, Scott bought more rams from Boxleigh Park and AMM. The AMM rams were bought to join to the cull Merino ewes and to replace the Border Leicester rams. The objective is to produce prime lambs from a self-replacing Merino flock. The photo below illustrates the type of wools on the Boxleigh Park and AMM rams. The Starting Point The white and bundly fleece above is The SRS® breeding program began at Wallendibby with the autumn 2010 joining. from the ram on the right in the first photo. When purchased, the ram tested 18.0 Scott bought 14 rams from Boxleigh Park. Prior to joining, the ewes were classed by Jim Watts into Wools, Frames and culls. Wool ewes were mated to Frame rams and Frame ewes to Wool rams. The objective is to produce progeny that excelled for both carcase traits and wool. The cull ewes were joined to Border Leicester rams.

Two Years On In November 2012 when Sir Michael and Lady Sally Nairn were visiting “Wallendibby” with their daughter, Emma Harrison, and their son, Andrew and his wife, Maya, the ewe hoggets were classed by Jim Watts into Wools and Frames and all the rams reexamined. At the moment, there are about 8700 sheep on Wallendibby. The last three seasons have been good. In this time, the sheep have produced, on average, a fleece weight of 7.1 kilograms, a fibre diameter of 18.1 microns, 74 percent yield and 113 Close up of the 14 months old ewes in 5 months wool. The Wool ewes have a fleece surface comprised of closely packed staples that are long and thin. The Frame ewes have blockier and shorter staples.

The Merino joinings resulted in 154

An example of 8 months wool growth (130 millimetres long) on the rams microns with a standard deviation of 2.6, co-efficient of variation of 14.5 percent and 99.8 percent comfort factor. The yearling breeding values were: + 4.6 kilograms for body weight; + 1.6 millimetres for eye muscle depth; +0.4 millimetres for fat cover; and + 12.6 millimetres for fleece length. When buying the rams, Scott targets rams with density and length of about 18.5 microns with as close to 100 percent comfort factor as possible. He says “If the breeding values for, muscle, fat and fleece length are there as well, that’s a ram I am going to bid on”. With regard to Boxleigh Park studbreeder, Bruce Taylor, Scott says, “Bruce is a wonderful studmaster. The care he takes in the breeding of his sheep is exceptional. He also phones about every 3 months to find out if there is any way he can help out. It is much appreciated.”

Scott Dunn with the SRS® Merino rams percent pregnancies. The cull ewes joined to Border Leicester rams returned 142 percent. The lambing marking percentage for the Merino flock was 121 percent. Only 1.5 percent of Merino lambs were lost from lamb marking to shearing at 8 months of age. At that stage, Scott remarked “I see two important points emerging so far. Firstly, that we could simply class up the ewes according to SRS® principles and see an immediate and predicted big lift in potential lambing of about 30 percent. Secondly,

percent lambs weaned. In the 30 years prior to switching to SRS® breeding, the sheep averaged 5.3 kilograms for fleece weight, 20.5 microns for fibre diameter with a lamb marking percentage of 85 percent. Scott says, “These rapid changes are partly seasonal but mostly the way the rams have been bred and selected and the way the ewes have been classed. This year the ewe hoggets averaged about 48 kilograms body weight at 14 months of age and are growing 12 to 15 millimetres of wool per month. Scott remarks “The Merino sheep at Wallendibby now dry out very quickly following rain. We have not jetted the Merino sheep for 3 years whilst the crossbred ewes had to be jetted twice last year. This fast drying of the Merino fleeces means we avoid delays

from wet weather at shearing. Our shearing contractor says, with 4 shearers and a learner, they now shear 850 to 880 Merino sheep per day at Wallendibby. This fast rate of shearing means the flock is shorn one day sooner than other flocks of similar size in the district. And with only 3 wool bins in the shed, it indicates that the wool is of such consistent quality that it more or less goes one way.” The Future Scott says “We hope to breed a prime lamb with superb wool sired by a Poll Merino ram out of a Poll Merino ewe, with both parents having the genetic traits of high fecundity and high lamb survival. “We think that SRS® rams can provide this. So far, it is all visual assessment but the rams over our cull Merino ewes have produced progeny that are fatter, “straighter” (plainer bodied) and longer in the wool than any of the sheep produced in the Wallendibby flock”.

Cooma Associated Agents yarded 7500 lambs and 5400 sheep for a total yarding of 12,900.

A good but mixed quality yarding met with much weaker demand. Winners of the Zone Finals in Nimmitabel then go on to compete in the State Finals at Sydney Royal Easter Show, the winners of the State Finals go on to compete in the National Judging Competitions, these are held in a different State each year. The Condobolin P&H Association will invite the winner of the State Final in the Merino Sheep Competition to accompany the Judge as associate judge at the 2013 Don Brown Memorial Merino Ewe Competition, Condobolin, to gain valuable experience. The winner will be the guest of the Committee and with all expenses paid. Nimmitabel Show is currently one of the most unique shows around the district as it hosts the Zone Finals of the Judging Competitions. The five sections of the Judging Competition are Merino Sheep Judging, Meat Sheep Judging, Merino Fleece Judging, Beef Cattle Judging and Cattle Parading. The Judging Competitions are a great asset to the Nimmitabel Show as they give young adults a chance to win the Zone Finals, and proceed to Sydney Royal Show and The National Judging Competitions Finals, also to be asked to Judge by local shows and other districts shows and ewe competitions. Through participating in these sections young adults have the opportunity to meet new people, gain life skills and gain further knowledge of the Rural Sector. The Cattle Paraders class is different to the other sections, the age of the competitors is 13 to 19 years of age, and 19 to 25 years.

In the Meat Sheep, Merino Fleece and the Beef Cattle Judging Competitions the first and second place winners are eligible to compete in the State Finals, where as the Merino Sheep Judging Competition the first place winner only is eligible to compete in the State Finals, the Cattle Paraders if there is 10 entrants then three place winners can compete in the State Finals at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. The Overall Champion Judge of all five zone final sections will win the Emily Alcock Memorial Perpetual Trophy, with a small replica of the trophy to keep. Opportunity to have a say on Cooma parks At least three of Cooma’s parks are under threat of losing their ‘community land’ status, something that has some local residents very concerned. Under the Cooma-Monaro Shire Council’s Local Environment Plan (LEP) 29 parcels of land are proposed to be renamed as operational land, which could mean the potential selling of these parcels for development in the future. Initially a public hearing was intended to take place on January 17, however residents disagreed with this date based on the fact that many local people could potentially be on holidays or could have missed the advertisements with the distraction of the festive season, the hearing will now take place on February 14, at 5.30pm at the Monaro Regional Library. The initial advertisement also caused some confusion with it’s reference to the location of the land parcels, rather than naming the parks by their given names, for example ‘Lloyd Avenue Park’, the document only referred to the street, lot and deposited plan number. Residents also suggested that this advertisement should be reworded into plain language, particularly if indeed the Council’s intention is to get the opinions and attendance of residents at the hearing. Many residents were not at all aware that the ‘parcels of land’ were parks at all. The parcels of land that will be discussed at the hearing include Lloyd Avenue Park, Yareen Road Reserve, Yareen Road Park and Adams Avenue playground. Also

included are The Raglan Gallery and Cultural Centre, two lots on the Monaro Highway, 20 hectares of vacant land on Numeralla Road, the wastewater treatment plant, the water treatment facility, the water storage facility at Bredbo, the RFS at Clinton, Yallambee Lodge and the council chambers and administration building, the latter few of these will remain used for the same purpose regardless of reclassification. Sarah Wall, a local resident who lives near Lloyd Avenue Park, one of the parks listed to potentially lose the ‘community land’ status, said, “It is very important we get as many people as we can to the hearing.” “we need these public spaces for children so that they can play ‘properly’” she explained. Sarah’s voice echoes the concerns of many residents in the area, a lot feel that the main aim for council’s potential reclassification is to in fact sell the land off eventually. She also explained the importance of having such a park close to their residence, “We have Centennial Park, but many parents have to actually drive their children there because it is so far away, so they can’t play on their own accord,” she explained, “I wouldn’t let my children ride their bikes there myself because of some of the people who hang around there,” she said. “My children loved playing in Lloyd Avenue Park, I want that for future children as well,” She finished. Included is a letter from local girl Abigail Sopniewski, who is nine-years-old and uses the park frequently. Another concern for residents was general manager John Vucic’s statement on the radio last week that claimed, “Some of the parks will have to go”. Sarah Wall said that to her this sounded like some of the reclassified parks will definitely be

sold. Mr Vucic, however, insisted that this was not the case. “We have never said we are going to sell off any of the parks,” he explained, “That is why we are having a public hearing, to get the publics opinions. Nothing will happen until after that hearing, once we know where the public stand, then we will decide on the reclassification,” he said. “People right now are jumping to conclusions,” he finished. Mr Vucic said that the Playground Strategy 2010 – 2020 outlines exactly why the council wish to undergo the reclassification of the land. months ago they said that they wanted parks that all groups could participate in,” he said, “they wanted safer parks with better facilities and they wanted them to be demand responsive,” he continued. This means that the proposed changes to the classification of the land would allow Council to build new parks that are catered to the needs of everyone, from the fiveyear-olds up to the 95-year-olds. The potential for these theme parks follows the rule that quantity is not better than quality, meaning there may potentially be less parks, but they would be of a higher quality than some of the ones we currently have. Whatever the outcome, Mr Vucic insisted that there would still be a park within a kilometre radius of any residence. “What is decided will come down to what the public have to say at the hearing, which is why it is so important that people attend,” Mr Vucic finished. Letter from Abigail Sopniewski, To the council, I really like the park over the fence of our backyard, we use it nearly every day it is really fun to play there. You might think that nobody uses it but people do we might only use the bottom bit but people do use the top bit I even use the top bit with my friends and the tyre swing is really fun we just haven’t been using it because it has been too cold in winter, but in summer we do it is really fun!!! We even use the park to get to our house through the back door and to get to our friends house we use the park. So please please PLEASE don’t take the park and replace it with houses. Stallions’ imports arrive in town The Cooma Stallions are set to have a dynamic start to the season with the addition of two English imports from Cumbria in the North West of England. Tom Holmes and Sam Dowsett, both 20 years old, have made their way across the ocean to add a new spark to the Cooma side for the 2013 season. “We just want to get into it now, get the season started,” said Sam. Both have represented the England U19’s team in Serbia last year and are hoping to make an impression on the field here in Australia. The pair arrived last Thursday, just in time to join in the Australia Day celebrations, and spent the weekend with their host family, Craig and Sandy Schofield, at the beach in Tathra. Both the boys have been playing rugby league since they

were six years old. Tom is a back rower and Sam plays either hooker or half-back. This is their first time in Australia and while they are here they hope to visit Sydney and the Great Barrier Reef. With the season ending in September and their return flights booked for October, hopefully this is something the pair can achieve. The boys say that there is a bit of leeway when it comes to returning back to England as well, “we can change the date of the flight, extend our stay or shorten it,” said Sam. Pre-season started on Tuesday for Tom and Sam who will take the first few weeks here in Cooma to get on their feet and then eventually they might look for work. Tom works in the shipyards back in England and Sam is a qualified mechanic. If these trades can get them work here then they

might explore that, otherwise they might look for a job labouring. When we told the boys that they had to support the Canberra Raiders they just laughed, Sam said he had a soft spot for the Rabbitoh’s and already has a West Sydney Jumper, but he also doesn’t mind Canterbury Bulldogs either. Fortunately it seemed like we could still get Tom on the Green Machine team. The Cooma Stallion’s Football Club would like to invite you to join them for what promises to be a very exciting year for Rugby League in our region. The annual Sponsor Jumper night will be held at the Cooma Ex-Services Club, Coombah Lounge on Friday, commencing at 7pm. Light refreshments will be served and there will be lucky door prizes on offer! Sponsors will have the opportunity to meet and chat with the 2013 coaching team Steven Dunn First Grade, Paul Lloyd Reserve Grade, Nathan Smith under 18s and Craig Schofield Ladies League Tag and also get a chance to meet all the players as all four grades will be in attendance.

Your sponsorship will help to advertise your business as well as support your local Rugby League Club. Mainstreet will once again provide the 2013 kits. Simon and Alicia Bolton have been working very hard getting the jersey’s ready in time for the start of the season. To help them meet the deadline, it is imperative to have all sponsors finalised on or before the jumper night. The Stallions Football Club are offering the incentive that sponsors attending the draw

will be given the opportunity for a first grade jumper. If you are unable to attend, please send a representative. The Club would like to thank you in anticipation of your support and they look forward to seeing you on Friday February 1. Tom Holmes and Sam Dowsett are settling into Cooma for the 2013 season.

The Big Bowls Day scheduled for last Saturday had to cancelled due to wet greens following the rain on Saturday, that was otherwise very welcomed. Some players may not have been available to play on the scheduled day but they will have an opportunity to take part on the rescheduled day, Sunday February 17. They will be most welcome, as some who were to play last Sunday have indicated that they will not be available on the new date of February 17. Let Guilio know if you would like to play. The remaining quarter-final in District Pairs will be played on Wednesday when Neil

McGregor and Peter Schroeder take on Ron Wainwright and Denis Steinfort with the winner going to play Geoff Venables and Gordon Cox in one semifinal and Wayne Lodge and Mel Storta playing Peter Marsicano and Ross Russell in the other. Entries for the Club Minor Singles and Minor Pairs are now open and names should be on the entry sheet on the Notice Board by Sunday February 24. Only eight social Bbowlers last Saturday, no doubt everyone was resting up for Sunday. Mark Buckley and Geoff Venables had a shaky start against Denis Steinfort and Wayne Lodge when they lost the first three ends but recovered to

lead 10/10 after eleven ends and were cruising when rain stopped play on end sixteen. No doubt Denis and Wayne were confident of making up the fifteen shot deficit over the remaining ends if the game had gone the full distance. Richard Nichols and Neil McGregor also had a good start against Rulie Steinfort and Paul Cannell to lead 6/3 after seven ends, before Rulie and Paul began to make their presence felt, but this was short lived as Richard and Neil were in control until rain stopped play on end twenty, with Richard and Neil in front 19/8.

Western week at JER! Polish up your spurs and dust your hats as riders from any discipline, whether it is reining, we are about to launch into a week of Western dressage or campdrafting”, past President of riding and horsemanship at the Jindabyne Reining Australia, Annie Woodhouse, said. Equestrian Resort (JER). The clinic is open to any level of horse Two horse shows and a clinic by Australia’s or rider or to fence-sitters and for further leading reining trainer make this a week to information, call Bec Laurie on 0403 128 427. mark on your calendars. If you think that the week is almost over On February 2-3, the Snowy Mountains Western Riders Association (SMWRA) is holding a two-day show. Saturday is for new comers to Western horse showing and is followed by an A grade Western show on Saturday afternoon and Sunday. More information about the show is available from Kyley at JER or from the secretary of SMWRA, Gayle Burges on 0488 363 323.

after all this, think again! Following the clinic, on February 9-10, the NSW Reining Horse Association is holding its annual Reining in the Alps show.

As the show people are packing up, more horse floats and goosenecks will be arriving, as from February 4-8 Warren Backhouse is holding a five-day clinic. Warren is Australia’s top money earning reining trainer. This year, he won every major reining event in Australia and capped this off by taking out both the Championship and Reserve Champion at Equitana in Melbourne.

This year, the club is lucky to have convinced Warren Backhouse to ride in some of the events on the Saturday night – a big ask, as the horses he will ride are not in his training stable.

This show gets bigger each year and draws reiners from all over the east coast. The show offers classes for both those who may just be interested in having a go at reining, through to more serious Professional and Non-Pro reiners.

However, if you want to see this legend reiner kick up some dust and show how its meant to look, come along to JER; there is no admission charge and reiners are very friendly, Not only is he an awe inspiring competitor approachable people! but also a wonderful clinician and his clinics The Snowy Mountains has a reputation for are also very popular. Whilst the structure of its great horse men and women and this week the clinics is based around reining maneuvers, at JER just goes to show that no matter what many non-reiners attend and walk away very the discipline, the people of Cooma, Jindabyne happy with the knowledge they have gained. and surrounds just love their horses and want “Warren’s clinics teach you about control to learn more. of every part of your horse and how each Pictured: Warren Backhouse. movement is related to the next. The results in the morning were as follows M Zasso def H Walker; L McMahon

def B Corby ; M Murphy def L West; D Turner def A Ranta Afternoon results were as follows L McMahon def M Zasso : D Turner def M Murphy The final will be this Wednesday between L McMahon and D Turner. This will be a game worth watching so please come and support the women’s bowls in your district.

Handicaps continue to tumble Cooma Golf report by Garry Atkinson There are some blistering scores at Cooma Golf Club at the moment with handicaps tumbling due to the extra summer run and preferred lies. If you are interested in playing pennant golf this autumn then place your name on the notice board for either the A reserve pennant team or the B grade handicap team So what happened last week on the course… On Saturday, 40 players hit off in a single medley stableford. Steve Young took out A grade with a round of the day, amassing a fine 44 points with Brian Searl coming home with 40 points. In B grade Tom Geach had 42 points with Ken Ganya coming in second with 38 points. C grade was won by John Langton with 43 points from Neil Venables with 39. Ball winners went down to 36 points. There were no nearest the pins. Sunday saw a wetter course after great rain on Saturday night. Norm Marshall obviously liked the conditions and scored 43 points off a 7 handicap to just nudge out Tony Clibborn with 42 points. Ball winners went down to 34 points.

On the ninth our nearest the pin winner was Norm Marshall and on the 17th Terry Johnston. On Wednesday, 35 players competed in three grades for the top prizes with A grade being won by Denis Minehan with 42 points. B grade was taken out by Vic Carroll with 41 points and C grade was won by Jenny Rainsford also with 41 points. Ball winners went down to 37 points. Nearest the pin on the ninth was a super shot by Phil Patricks and Norm Marshall was closest on the 17th. On Tuesday Cooma Golf Club sees the ACT veterans golf competition come to Cooma with over 50 veterans visiting – welcome one and all. Next Saturday sees an individual stableford medley being round fuve of the Summer Cup. On Sunday round two of the Super Stableford is on offer and on Wednesday there is a single medley stableford for members and visitors so don’t miss another fine week of golf. Junior golf is on this Thursday with the popular junior comp on Sunday at 2pm. Members are asked to lend a hand if they can, to encourage over 35 keen young golfers. See you on the course.

Room for locals at Cooma Rodeo With so many competitors travelling long distances to compete at the CRT Cooma Rural Rodeo, there has been a drop in the amount of local competitors willing to throw their hats in the ring and compete. But there is no reason for this to happen; there are plenty of events that are tailor made for local competitors, the only requirement is a sense of adventure and a desire for adrenaline! Most entries are taken in the week prior to the Rodeo, with the only event where entries are taken on the day of the Rodeo being the Cochran Horse Treks Poley Buckjump. Junior Barrel Racing Barrel racing is an event that anyone can have a go at; and kids who love horses have their chance in one of the three age divisions of the junior barrel race. Entry fees are cheap and you do not have to have a particular kind of horse to compete. You will however need to wear a long sleeve shirt, riding boots and an Australian Standard helmet and will need to be riding in either a stock or western saddle. Entries are taken through ABCRA Head Office on Thursday January 31 and Friday February 1, on 1800 028 992. Junior Steer Ride and Poddy Ride For every child who has wondered what riding a bucking bull would be like, the junior steer riding events are the place to start. Just like the junior barrel race, entry fees are cheap, and you will need to own, or borrow on the day, an Australian Standard helmet, a vest and a rope. For the Poddy Riders the Cooma Committee has equipment that Bush Basics has generously donated that can be borrowed on the day. Entries are taken through ABCRA Head Office on Thursday January 31 and Friday February 1, on 1800 028 992. There are no entries on the day for the Poddy Ride.

Cherry Tree Equine Novice Barrel Race There is no age or experience limit to enter the Cherry Tree Equine Novice Barrel Race. The first event on the program, the Novice Barrel is a chance for anyone to have a go at barrel racing and for the more seasoned competitors to give their young horses a run. A change in the rules of the ABCRA means entries can no longer be taken on the day of the rodeo. Entries are taken through ABCRA Head Office on Thursday January 31 and Friday February 1, on 1800 028 992. Cochran Horse Treks Poley Buckjump The newest event at the CRT Cooma Rural Rodeo, the Cochran Horse Treks Poley Buckjump is a chance for local horsemen and women to try their hand at showing their style in front of their home crowd. Competitors will be judged for the style not only in the saddle, but their ability to crack a stock whip whilst in the air. Entries are limited for this event and will be taken on the day at the Secretary’s Office. Mitavite Divisional Barrel Race To be held on Sunday February 10, starting at 8am, barrel racing fans will have the chance to run their horses in a fun, low pressure environment at the Mitavite Divisional Barrel Race. What many people will find enticing is the fact that you do not have to have the fastest horse on the day to win; as all competitors are split into three divisions, meaning there will be three winners on the day. To help with training young horses and educating old ones, competitors are able to purchase exhibition runs before and after their competition run. Entries for the Divisional Barrel Race will be taken on the day. For more information on any of these events, or the CRT Cooma Rural Rodeo in general, please visit www.coomarodeo.org.au.

Two for Torah?

Cooma’s golden girl Torah Bright is proving that she still has what it takes when the Winter Olympics roll around in Sochi, Russia in 2014. Bright recently secured a third place in the slopestyle event at The Snowboard World Championships in Canada. This could mean that Bright has the potential to become Australia’s first ever dual medallist at a single Winter Olympics. Her gold in the halfpipe event at The Vancouver Games in 2012 means that she is a hot contender for a medal placing in Sochi, and this recent bronze only adds potential to her Olympic plunder. Bright skipped her preferred halfpipe event on the day to concentrate on the slopestyle, which

seems to have paid off for her. The slopestyle discipline will make it’s debut in Sochi and may prove to be a great opportunity for Bright. With extremely windy conditions on the first day of the championships causing events to be cancelled, the women were forced to qualify and participate in the final all in one day, conditions that could be considered trying for the athletes. Slopestyle as an event sees athletes competing on a purpose built course that contains not only jumps but also rails and boxes, points are awarded to participants based on the various manoeuvres that they perform. The current program for the Games in Sochi sees the halfpipe event and the slopestyle final two days apart, meaning that there is room for athletes to compete in both. Two medals in one games is unheard of and there are definite hopes that Bright could fast become the first Australian woman to secure the honour. Shaun White, also from Australia, has competed in the slopestyle and halfpipe events at the X-games before and with two previous gold medals in the Winter Olympics is also in for a chance. Cooma will be looking on in hopes that our golden girl can once again make us proud when the time comes.

Success for James at the Australian Youth Nationals Clay target shooter James Ewart from Peak View, recently competed in the Australian Youth Nationals for shooting, held at the Sydney International Shooting Centre at Cecil Park. James’s discipline is ‘Double Trap’ and he competed in the 1724 year division. He shot 137/150 in the qualifying round, putting him in fourth position in the final. James shot 41/50 in the final which placed him thrid overall in Australia in the Youth Nationals.

James’s next major shoot is the Australian National which is being held in Brisbane next week. James will be representing NSW in the, Open Double Trap team , Junior Double Trap team and Junior Trench team as well as shooting for himself. James would like to thank his employers, Bracher Timbers and Alpine Hotel for allowing him time off to compete in these major shooting events.

Cooma ladies golf On Wednesday January 23 in the fourth round of The Sisters nine-hole S’ford competition, nine players took to the fairways. With terrific style and accuracy on all her shots, Lyn Last came in the winner with a fantastic 24 points. Well done Lyn. Runner up to Lyn was Marilynne Weston also playing excellent golf with a score of 20 points. Balls were won by Val Leitch 19 points, Val has been playing great golf too. Aileen Smith & Gillian Petersohn with 17 points won balls and Lorraine McGregor took out the NTP ball with a super shot to the ninth green.

Saturday saw a small field taking part in the fourth round of the Summer Cup. The winner was Dorothy Bilbow showing us how to play golf with 21 points. Val Leitch kept up her good form as runner up to Dorothy with 19 points and won a ball. On Sunday the winner in the third round of the 18 hole S’ford Marion Burke trophy was Janet Freimanis with 35 points and the runner up was Lorraine McGregor who won a ball. Congratulations to all the winners and until next week TTFN

on the Monaro

Cooma-Monaro’s senior and junior sports stars were honoured on Australia Day. The senior sports star of 2012 is Myrtle Boate. Myrtle is a local of 95 years and has lived all her life at Peak View. She is well known in the community as a tennis icon. She still plays tennis twice a week at the Royal on Mondays and Thursdays with a very keen group of tennis lovers. Myrtle grew up with a passion for the game of tennis, which began when she was 6 years old. As an only child growing

up in the bush, Myrtle soon learned how to entertain herself. She would spend hours hitting a ball up against the chimney with a paddle wooden bat. This blossomed into a sport that became more of a way of life as Myrtle did very well and won many major events locally and away. She attended ‘Country Week’ for 45 consecutive years, a record that has not been broken. She says that , ‘Tennis has brought her and continues to bring her good health, friendship and fun’ The shire’s junior sports star award wen to Jacob Suthern, who wass just seven-

years-old when he decided to take part in the YMCA National Swimathon in March 2012. He swam an incredible 600 metres which was six times his goal. He attends Cooma Public School and wanted to make a difference to some of his peers who are in the special needs class. Overall, Jacob was seventh in Australia on the individual leader board. He raised $1442 for children in the Cooma Monaro Shire and they are now able to learn to swim as all the money stayed in our community to help those with special needs or a disability.

Jacob was one of the highest fundraisers in NSW. Recently, YMCA in Sydney contacted Jacob and asked if they could use his story and have requested him to be the Ambassador for the 2013 Swimathon. Naturally, he was very excited and agreed. Jacob has already registered for the March 2013 Swimathon and is one of the top fundraisers already. He is determined to swim even further and hopes to raise even more money this year, with more people from the community sponsoring him.

Cooma-Monaro’s sports stars of the year, Myrtle Boate and Jacob Suthern, received their awards from Australia Day Ambassador, Sandra Bates.
