Get your hands on a signed Dragons jersey The Dalgety Show has an exciting raffle prize up for grabs, especially if you are a St George Illawarra Dragons fan. The Cooma branch of St George Bank has kindly donated a signed St George jersey by all the team members who played in the 2015 Charity Shield Game against the Rabbitohs. This is the first year that St George have offered to sponsor the Dalgety Show, and the organisers couldn’t be more thrilled. “We are very happy to be supporting such a fantastic local event, says Branch Manager Amanda Anderson, “We will draw the winner of the jersey on the day of the Dalgety Show, and will have our great mascot the Happy

Dragon there to say hello to the kids and hand out some goodies. Dalgety Show committee member and Snowy River Shire Councillor Vickii Wallace is over the moon about the generous donation from St George. “Both these legendary clubs have huge followings of “NRL tragics throughout the Monaro, so these tickets will really sell like hot cakes, says Vickii, “To promote and get a chance to view it many of the local hotels have come on board and will have it on show behind the bar. A Bredbo Christmas A good number of adults and children enjoyed an evening of singing “Carols Across the Village at Bredbo on Sunday 20th December. Wonderful music and carols leadership was provided by Sarah Wall, Gaylene Jennings, Beth Gardiner and Ashleigh Bowerman. It was a fun evening with children

running around and people relaxing on the warm Sunday evening. Christmas carols, readings and the play presented by the village children kept the audience captivated. Many villagers stayed until well after dark chatting and having a good time with friends, new and old.

The Member for Monaro John Barilaro has welcomed the NSW Government’s recent announcement of a comprehensive $20 million package to slash the NSW District Court backlog by more than 600 criminal trials over the next two years. Mr Barilaro said the Monaro will benefit from better access to fast and fair justice. “Delays are disproportionately represented in regional communities and affect confidence in the administration of justice, Mr Barilaro said. “This package will provide immediate relief and improve access to justice by reducing the NSW District Court backlog in communities across NSW. “The NSW Government is working to ensure the justice system is fast, fair and accessible. Delays put victims through undue stress, make it harder for witnesses to recall key details and strain the resources of the justice

system. “This is going to make a real difference to our justice system and more importantly to people’s lives.â€? The package includes: ¡ Additional sittings for NSW District Court: Extra criminal sitting weeks to be held in regional areas through to June 2016. ¡Targeted Trial Call-Over Courts: This will identify matters that can be resolved faster by an early guilty plea, allowing defended trials to be heard sooner. ¡ Pre-trial conferencing for long trials that last 20 days or more: Prosecution and defence meeting prior to trial to ensure early resolution of criminal trials. ¡ Appointment of acting judges: Appointing judges to hear more matters awaiting trial. ¡ Appointment of additional public defenders: Appointing public defenders to ensure defended matters are dealt with faster.

Cooma Hospital decks the halls With tinsel and baubles around every corner, the Cooma Hospital definitely got into the Christmas spirit this year. The annual judging of each ward by the Hospital Auxiliary took place last Wednesday, with the Renal Unit taking out the number one spot. The catering staff came in a close second with their creative recycling of food wrappings as decorations. Pictured are members of the Auxiliary with nurses Dan Kelly, Lynn Nichols and Nurse Unit Manager Sharon Bennett in the renal ward.

On-site sewage management Suspension of Fire Permits systems audit Snowy River Shire Council has recently performed an audit of properties that are not connected to Council’s sewerage network (reticulated sewer) and that have not been charged a fee for operating an on-site sewage management system in this financial year. Council identified approximately 550 properties that will receive a backdated on-site sewage management rates charge for the 2015/2016 financial year. If you own a property that currently has an on-site sewage management system (e.g. septic tank and trench, worm farm, aerated wastewater treatment system etc.) and you did not receive a rates charge in this financial year, you will receive a backdated rates charge in the coming weeks in accordance with Council’s Schedule of Fees and Charges. This is not a new charge and most properties that are not connected to the sewerage network within the Shire have been receiving this charge on their rates notices since the 2013/2014 financial year.

Council would like remind landholders that the NSW Government requires property owners to maintain a current Approval to Operate an On-site Sewage Management System. This requirement is outlined in Sections 68 and 133 of the Local Government Act 1993. If you have an on-site sewage management system and do not hold a current Approval to Operate, please visit Council’s website or one of Council’s offices to obtain an application form. An Approval to Operate an On-site Sewage Management System is a time limited approval that requires renewal for the life of the system. Council would like to take this opportunity to thank all landholders that are currently complying with the Local Government Act 1993 and who are maintaining their systems and approvals to operate on-site sewage management system. For further information on this matter please see Council’s website www. snowyriver.nsw.gov.au or contact Snowy River Shire Council on (02) 6451 1195.

Due to continuing dry conditions, increased fuel loads from spring rain and the rapid curing of fuel in both grasslands and bush, the NSW Rural Fire Service (NSWRFS) Monaro wish to advise the issuing of fire permits has been suspended until further notice. This decision has been made in consultation with the Group Captains. If you have extenuating circumstances and believe you need a permit, please contact your local Fire Control Centre to discuss

and arrange an inspection. “Our overriding concern is the safety of all residents and we have acted accordingly by suspending fire permits until further notice,” stated Chris Allen NSWRFS District Services Coordinator Monaro. “Now is not the time for anyone to become complacent about the risk of bush fires and I urge all residents to have a completed Bush Fire Survival Plan available, and to report any unattended fires they see to Triple Zero (000) immediately.”

Australia Day’s special guests on the Monaro Australia Day ambassador Lindy Hou OAM paralympic gold medallist and world champion Snowy River Shire Council is very pleased to welcome Lindy Hou OAM, as Snowy River Shires 2016 Australia Day Ambassador. “Australia Day Ambassadors volunteer their time and we are extremely grateful that Lindy will be joining us in our celebrations on Australia Day” said Mayor John Cahill. Lindy dreamed of standing on the Olympic podium with a gold medal and in 2004 at the Athens Paralympic Games that dream became a reality when she won a gold, two silver and one bronze medal. “Winning those medals in Athens proved to me that anyone can, with hard work, dedication and a goal to achieve, fulfil their sweetest dream,” said Lindy Hou. Lindy suffers from a degenerative eye condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa. She began losing her sight in the mid-1980s and is now almost totally blind. Twenty-five years ago as her sight began failing, Lindy was forced to give up playing ball sports and decided that as an alternative, she would participate in the sport of triathlon. During the early 1990s, despite her failing eyesight, Lindy represented Australia twice in the World Triathlon Championships as an able- bodied athlete for her age group. For many people, losing their sight often means the end of being involved however this is not so for Lindy. In 1999, Lindy rediscovered the joy of cycling but this time on a tandem bike. Lindy narrowly missed selection for the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Team however, through her determination she became a member of the Australian team for the 2004 Games in Athens. The Athens Paralympic Games were a

triumph. Not only did she make the team with pilots Janelle Lindsay and Toireasa Gallagher, but she and Janelle had the honour of being the first Australian females to win gold at the Athens Paralympic Games. Lindy won a total of four medals and set the World Women’s 200m Fly record of 11.675 seconds. On 19 September 2005, Lindy and her pilot Toireasa Gallagher set the One Hour World Women’s Tandem record of 42.93km at the Sydney Dunc Gray Velodrome and Lindy held the shortest and the longest world records recognised by the Union of Cycling International (UCI), the governing body for world cycling. “Australia is the land of opportunity and regardless of our backgrounds, we can still represent this country and be the best in the world.” In 2006, Lindy finally won her first Rainbow Jersey (the world championship jersey) with her pilot when they won two gold medals at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) World Championships. At the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games, Lindy and Toireasa also won a silver and bronze medal. “To be able to wear the Australian uniform and stand on the podium in Beijing, the land of my ancestors, is the essence of what being an Aussie is all about,” said Lindy Hou. Since Lindy’s retirement from Paralympic Cycling, she has continued to keep fit through cycling and running. She has completed many charity bike rides including a ride from

New Bega hospital ready to go

Make & Print Collages? With just the finishing touches to go, the new South East Regional Hospital in Bega is set to open its doors on Monday 7 March 2016. The huge $187 million project has been funded under the Health and Hospitals Fund Program with the Federal Government providing $160.1 million and the NSW Government making up the rest with $26.9 million. The state of the art facility will include expansions to

the emergency department, intensive care service, mental health service, medical oncology unit, renal dialysis unit and the primary health care and ambulatory services. Heather Austin, the General Manager of the Bega Valley Health Service, says that having outgrown the old Bega Hospital in terms of demand for services and the quality of facilities, the new hospital is going to better meet the needs of the community.

“We have really embraced the ICT age, with many new operating systems being put in place, and lots of contemporary, modern equipment, says Ms Austin, “The new hospital will allow for more acute patients and for more specialist doctors to be able to work in the South East Region. “There will also be new patient accommodation provided, and air conditioning throughout the hospital, which is something that the old

Summer marketing campaign As part of the next phase of CoomaMonaro Shire Council’s innovative economic development strategy, Council is launching an electronic marketing campaign over the forthcoming holiday season. The campaign, which debuted on Boxing Day, targets residents of Canberra and the South Coast, as well as the many travellers traversing the Monaro-Snowy Mountains region. Mayor of Cooma-Monaro Shire Council, Dean Lynch, says the objective of the campaign is to raise Cooma’s profile as a destination for visitors over the holiday period to stimulate local business, and to highlight the commercial and lifestyle opportunities of the area. The holiday campaign incorporates television, radio and digital platforms. “Our strategy is to progressively elevate the perception of Cooma in the ACT and surrounding regions as

a place to live, work, play and invest. This is part of a long-term, integrated economic development program. The campaign is designed to be cost-effective in implementation and represents great value for the Shire, Mayor Lynch said. “We have scheduled 194 television spots in the two-week period after Christmas and a further 137 radio spots through to Australia Day. This advertising schedule is complemented with a range of digital platforms. This is the biggest campaign of its type that the Shire has undertaken, Councillor Lynch said. The Cooma destination television campaign can be seen from Boxing Day on Channel 7’s Sunrise, National News, The Chase Australia and across 7Mate and 7Two. Spots on Snow-FM and 2XL run through to Australia Day.

hospital lacked. The original plan had the South East Regional Hospital set to replace both the current Bega Hospital and the Pambula Hospital, however the Pambula Hospital will remain open and only the old Bega facility will eventually close. An open day is planned for public viewing of the hospital some time in January and more information can be found on the website www.serh.org.au.

The Salvestro boys – building a family legacy Elle Mackintosh “Dad, tell her about your friend at the drycleaner. “Tell her the story about the train, Chazza. “You didn’t tell her the story about the rock. “You might need to have a few drinks before you can tell that story.

Sitting in the home where it all started, the Salvestro boys swap stories of their time on building sites, and with more than a lifetime of experience between them, there are many to tell. When Luigi Salvestro moved to Australia from Italy in 1950, he left his young family behind in the region of Veneto to try and create a better life for them. A carpenter by trade, Luigi had previously worked across Italy, Switzerland and France. However after the war, it was difficult for him to find work. Meanwhile, Australia’s Prime Minister Ben Chifley was rolling out the ‘populate or perish’ policy, encouraging Europeans to migrate down under. Luigi arrived in Sydney and soon heard that there was a 30-year project starting in a small town called Cooma. So he jumped on the train known as Old Smokey and headed to Cooma to see what it was all about. Luigi had always appreciated a quiet life, and he immediately fell in love with the peaceful little place, so once he had secured a job helping build 100 snowy homes up in Cooma North, he decided to build a house in town for his family. Luigi spent all his spare time building the Bent Street house where Charlie, his son, lives today having purchased it when his parents passed away. “Many of Luigi’s friends laughed at him as he was the very first Italian to build a home in Cooma. They thought he was crazy to build in such a small town, but sooner or later they all did the same thing, says Charlie. “I don’t know how he did it. At the time he was working very hard so that he could send us some money home and pay for our trip over to Australia. So I don’t know how he found time to build this house in only 18 months before we came over. But over they came, 13-year-old Charlie, his four younger sisters and his mother, on a ship called ‘Roma’ that took 30 days to make the journey to Sydney. Charlie says that he still has the family’s ticket from the trip. After they arrived, the Salvestro family grew from seven to nine with the arrival of Charlie’s fifth sister and first brother. At the age of 16, Charlie started working on the Snowy Scheme for a Norwegian company in Guthega called ‘Selmer’ as a carpenter and also in the tunnels. He was the youngest employee at the time. Even though it was a very dangerous job, Charlie says that he volunteered to work in

the tunnels during winter because it was much warmer to be working inside. Helping his father in the building trade in Cooma, Charlie sort of fell into the industry, as he was not really sure what else to do, but he has always enjoyed it. “You know, it is good to be a builder, he says, “It was my Dad’s profession and I remember Dad used to say “when you knock-off at the end of the day, and you are walking away from the building site, turn around and look at what you have achieved and feel proud, and I have tried to pass this sentiment on to Robbie and Ricky. After Luigi passed away, Charlie started up his own business in 1970. Charlie says that over the years he has trained about a dozen apprentices who also became builders. Charlie’s first apprentice was his younger brother, Robbie followed by his

three sons Steve, Geoff and Ricky. “I didn’t really like school, and when I left I didn’t really know what to do, so I just started working with Charlie, Robbie says, “He really pushed me to go to TAFE. I didn’t want to do it, but Charlie insisted that I do it all properly. Robbie worked with Charlie for 10 years before he too left to start his own business. “There just wasn’t enough work for a team of four of us, so we split into teams of two and went from there, says Robbie. Robbie’s business is called R&A Salvestro, which he owns with his wife Anne, who helps with the paperwork and managing the accounts. Charlie’s wife Sue also did all the bookwork before he retired. He says that to have that sort of support from your spouse is very important, and that he could not have run the business without her. “I like to spend my time on the tools rather than the books, says Robbie, “One of the challenges of owning your

business is that you never really knock off. If you want to get a good days work out of your employees, you have to make sure the site is all ready to go when they turn up in the morning. You also have to make sure you’ve got more jobs lined up once the current one is finished. A true family business, Robbie’s son Matt also works for R&A Salvestro, completing his apprenticeship with Robbie straight out of school. Matt recently spent 18 months in Sydney as a subcontractor but has now returned to Cooma to work with Robbie. “Sydney was good, says Matt, “I learnt a lot and got to work with lots of different people, but I didn’t really like the city lifestyle. Having worked in Cooma all their lives, Charlie and Robbie agree that being in a smaller place gives builders a wider range of skills and experiences. “When you work in a town like Cooma and are part of a smaller team, you get to see a job from start to finish, says Robbie, “In bigger cities, they often bring in separate people to do separate tasks. You might have a guy who only does framework, then someone else who comes in to do the concreting, and then another who only does roofs. But we have to be able to do everything, which is much more valuable. But the Salvestro building name does not stop there; Charlie’s son Ricky became his partner in the business and they worked together for over 20 years. In 2013 Ricky established his own business, Salvestro Developments. Salvestro Developments is a little different, in that Ricky and his team design and build homes from scratch, and then sell the finished product. Ricky’s experience working as Charlie’s apprentice and later as his partner means he can look at the big picture and design quality homes and buildings. Ricky also provides free quotations for building of new homes on a client’s own block of land or he can build an extension to your existing home or renovate your kitchen or bathroom. Ricky is also one of the few qualified, licensed, Asbestos removalists in the area. Ricky also relies heavily on his wife Kirsty, who is a solicitor, to help him with the paperwork involved in running his own business. The boys say that there are lots of benefits of all being in the same industry, and that being able to come to one another for advice or to swap stories is a real advantage. However Charlie says he was always nervous that one of the boys would get hurt on site, especially when they were first starting out. Charlie says that his dad Luigi would have been very proud to see that the boys have made carpentry their careers and now own successful local businesses.

The colposcope is an instrument that assists in gynaecology, allowing the operator to see any problems that would be missed by the naked eye. Based in the theatre department of the hospital, the colposcope is used when a pap smear returns abnormal results. It is essential in detecting cervical cancer. Previously, the Cooma Hospital would have to borrow this equipment, and therefore would not have much control over the condition of the colposcope they were using.

“Now we have an up-to-date colposcope that is smaller and easier to use, says Nurse Unit Manager Matthew Holobrodskyj, “And we can now schedule these surgeries whenever, and save people having to make a trip up to Sydney. Nurse Unit Manager Sharon Bennett extended her thanks to the Auxiliary, saying that they were all very appreciative of all the donations they have made to the hospital, including this new colposcope. President of the Hospital Auxiliary Bob Weston said all the donations that contributed to this equipment, worth $15,000, came from the community.

Local pilot injured in fatal Tiger Moth crash With well known young pilot, Ryan Campbell having a large number of friends and family in Bombala, the local community has been saddened by news of the fatal plane crash he was involved in on Monday, December 28. Ryan is now recovering from serious injuries in a hospital in Queensland after the Tiger Moth he was piloting crashed at Pimpama, tragically killing his 58-year-old passenger. Twenty-one-year old Ryan had been

working with Tiger Moth Joy Rides on the Gold Coast for less than a month as operations manager when the accident occurred, but is an experienced and skilled pilot, winning the world record as the youngest pilot to fly solo around the world. The circumstances of the crash were unknown at the time of printing, but there were strong winds in the area at the time of the incident. Ryan is a much loved figure in Bombala and is highly respected across the wider

region, spending his spare time talking to teens as a motivational speaker and raising money to help other youngsters become involved in aviation. Ryan, who managed to call emergency services himself despite being trapped in the wrecked plane, was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital with severe leg, face, spinal and head injuries. All wish Ryan well in his recovery following such a tragic accident.

the

postman calls

Well, here we go – another year looms before us. It might be poor old Postman’s advancing years, but time just seems to whizz by. *Tempus fugits a bit too quickly, it seems.

But here is hoping 2016 brings peace, harmony and happiness to us all. A Lotto win probably wouldn’t go astray, either! As we leave 2015 though, Mother Nature reminds us of the amazing country we live in – floods up north and fire below. If only the floods could run downhill and extinguish the Victorian bushfires… 2016 is the Chinese Year of the Red Fire Monkey – it starts on February 8 and is predicted to shake, rattle and roll, culminating in a year in which anything can happen. That could make the Federal election interesting! But apparently, this year will reward individual efforts, rather than group efforts. Time to be imaginative then, and back yourself and your big ideas. Good luck!

Salvos not a dumping ground Editor, Is there anyone that is able to share with our community the ‘rule’ for donated items left at the drop off area at the Cooma Salvos store? Last Monday morning the volunteers at the store had an enormous task of sorting through the mountains of ransacked and sodden donations that had been

left at the drop off area over the previous weekend. Three quarters of all these donations for the Christmas week ended up in our tip. It seems to be very unclear to the community what this ‘rule’ is, as from my observation these donations to the Salvos are treated like a ‘free for all’ in ‘no mans land’. Penny Litchfield, Coolringdon.

Riposte Lisa Ashurst I’m in book heaven right now and what a good time to be here, being the holidays and all. To expand on that, I am a reader. An avid one actually who can spend hours between the pages of a good book so when some large boxes full of books came to me recently via a deceased estate I was very pleasantly surprised but on going through them and finding the deceased and I shared very similar tastes in authors and content I was downright thankful. Even better is that I haven’t read any of them. That’s three and a half shelves of bliss sitting right here in my lounge room! To be honest, I can’t really remember when I discovered the pleasure of a really good read. I do recall waiting impatiently each month during my early school years for the latest issue of the School Magazine, a publication that was distributed through all the primary schools I think, and reading it from cover to cover same day. I also remember reading my way through the English women’s magazines that my grandmother bought each week/month. I think it was those magazines though that led me to the conclusion that I wasn’t into romance stories. I’m still not, however I did read The Scarlet Pimpernel but that’s a classic. Mostly though it’s crime, mystery, drama, good ghosties, humour and intrigue. Growing up in Sydney, I was a regular at my local library until a new staff member refused to allow me

to take out books from the general/ adult fiction sections because I was a child and therefore could only borrow from the children’s shelves. That I had already been borrowing from the other sections was beside the point with this woman; she refused to check out anything she considered above my age group so I walked out one day and never went back. But I really missed it for a while. Features in the newspapers filled the void to a degree though because they were always a good gutsy read. And it just kept on going from there. Love reading. Hence a home where I am surrounded by books, of which I have read every one and will not part with because I enjoyed them all so much. I’m one of those people who can pick a book up a few years later and read it again and enjoy it as much as I did the first time. No everyone gets that but no matter. I do it and I admit it. So having said all that you can probably understand why I felt all my Christmases may have come at once when I was presented with a couple of large boxes jam packed with books for me to sort through and keep if I wanted. Well of course I wanted! What book addict wouldn’t? And then to find among them a number titles that I had been planning to buy plus titles by fave authors that I had yet to read... Trust me, over the moon doesn’t even begin to express what I’m feeling. But it’s close. However... ...I have books. I am happy.

Wright sculpture returns in bronze The small community of Delegate is greatly looking forward to welcoming back its Snowy River Brumbies in January! Locals will recall that the impressive original sculpture was completed in 2009 by highly acclaimed local artist, Rix Wright, shortly before his sad passing. It was the local community which raised the funds to have the sculpture featured in Delegate, and its unveiling in 2010 was a significant event as Rix’s final work was revealed. The lifelike sculpture of two wild horses was greatly admired by all, but unfortunately the material it was made from did not withstand the extreme frosts of the southern Monaro. As a result it became necessary for the horses to be removed, and for some time the base of the piece has stood bare, with only the bas-reliefs around the plinth remaining to be admired. That is until 2016! Rix’s daughter, Bronwyn Wright has

dedicated herself to having a bronze statue created to stand where Delegate’s beloved Snowy River Brumbies belong, and it is now ready for installation. “I wished to honour my father, Rix, and pay tribute to the people of the district who made a tremendous effort to raise funds to make the original sculptural work possible,” said Bronwyn. “The original sculpture could not be mended properly so I decided that I would do everything possible to have Rix’s subject matter of the two brumbies reproduced in a more stable material. Bronze was the obvious choice.” Bronwyn explains that in 1980 Rix had made a small sculpture of two horses as a present for his stepson, Johnny Flower. This small lively sculpture was made from cement fondu and was only 33cm high, but it is from this that Delegate’s new bronze sculpture has been born. “With new technology available, I realised that

Sculptor, Ewen Coates with the mould that was created from a 3D scan of one of Rix Wright’s wild horse sculptures. The finished bronze will be installed in Delegate next week to replace the weather damaged original.

The bronze being assembled ready for welding and chasing (metal texturing) in Melbourne. it was possible to scan the small sculpture in 3D and this could then be enlarged to a size that would sit on the plinth in Delegate,” Bronwyn said. “Johnny kindly agreed to let me employ a 3D specialist to travel up from Melbourne and scan the work in situ in Cooma.” After a long period of “tweaking” the scanned work in Melbourne, the 3D file was sent to a pattern maker. A new enlarged version, four times the size of the small sculpture, was then carved in polystyrene. Six weeks later the polystyrene horses were delivered to the Coates Foundry in Northcote where sculptor, Ewen Coates began the process of casting the work in bronze. In the last stages the horses were sandblasted ready for patination and finishing, with patination determining the colour surface of the horses. The fully completed sculpture of the Snowy River Brumbies will be transported to Delegate from Melbourne next week and installed on the existing base - an incredible donation to the community by Bronwyn in honour The original Rix Wright sculpture that was unveiled in 2010 has been greatly missed since it was removed due to weather damage, but Rix’s daughter, Bronwyn will be donating the new bronze to replace it and pay honour to both her father and the community.

Dalgety is lighting up the bush with residents, town and region participating in the annual Christmas Light Competition. A total of six residents, some located 18 kilometres out of the main township, entered the competition sponsored by the Dalgety Chamber of Commerce. Joint Proprietor of the Snowy River Holiday Park, Sue Winchester, said the competition also attracted interest from tourists and visitors at the Holiday Park over the festive season who sought night tours of the entries. for the community Christmas tree. “Next year we are going to try and encourage the farmers to light up. Most of them have long driveways making it difficult for cars to “go past”. We are going to have a “Farm Gate” category to get all involved.” Judging of this year’s Christmas lights’ competition took place on Friday, December 18 with a convoy of cars inspecting all the entries. Those in the convoy judged the best lights. The winners were Judy Newby, Michael Thompson and Pearl Buckland.

It’s been six years and six different frocks. Natalie Fanning, pictured here with Yallambee residents Beryl Roberts and Irene Baker, puts on a fancy Christmas dress every year and visits Yallambee and Werri Nina to spread a little Christmas joy. Natalie’s designer friend Elle Hopwood from Berridale makes the dress, and Natalie adds the decorations. Natalie says once she reaches 10 dresses, she plans on putting on a charity fundraising fashion show for the community.

The men in blue at Cosmo Cafe Get your groove on

There were several police and ambulance vehicles parked outside the Cosmo Cafe in Bombala last Wednesday, but thankfully there was no emergency - it was all in the name of sharing a cuppa! It was in fact Bombala’s turn to host ‘Coffee with a COP’ on the Wednesday, with Bombala, Delegate and Nimmitabel Police being joined by other members of the Monaro Local Area Command for the morning. Of course the wider community was invited to have a cuppa with the region’s Police, and a number of locals turned up to share the morning, including paramedics from the local Ambulance NSW team. “This is a new initiative in the Bombala area, and

we’d like to make it a regular event,” said Bombala Senior Constable, Nathan Marks. “It was great that members of the community came along to chat with local police officers over a coffee, and it was a good opportunity for us to identify any community concerns and find out how we can better service our area.”

Dig out the flares, tie-dye vests and rose coloured glasses - the Globe Hotel in Bombala is celebrating New Year’s Eve hippie style! But there’ll be added excitement when it comes to technicolour outfits, with the Globe inviting everyone to party under the black lights. This will see anything white or light coloured glowing brightly on the dancefloor, so make sure you throw on a string vest or even bust out the white platforms to really get things glowing! With the black lights powering away the Globe will also be offering

Family gathers to celebrate Eileen’s 100th birthday

PET SHOP PANEL

Cotinued from last issue...

During the holiday season, many people consider adding an animal member to their family. While buying a pet as a gift might seem like a wonderful idea, not everyone is able to give an animal the amount of love and care they need. Too many ‘wanna-be’ pet owners fail to do their research before taking the plunge to purchase a pet; once the reality kicks in about how much time and effort it takes to properly care for an animal, it becomes apparent that perhaps pet ownership was a bad decision. Too little, too late!

Former Bombala local, Eileen Ryan celebrated her 100th birthday at the Kembla Grange Racecourse with family and friends on December 19, even having a race named after her. Much loved former Bombala local, Dora Elizabeth Ryan, better known as Eileen, celebrated her 100th birthday recently. The wonderful milestone was celebrated on Saturday, December 19 at Kembla Grange Racecourse where she was given special honour with ‘The Eileen Ryan 100th Birthday Maiden Plate’ being named after her. Illustrating the importance of the occasion, Eileen was not only joined by family and friends for the day but was also interviewed by the Illawarra Mercury newspaper, WIN News and Sky Racing. Eileen was born on December 23, 1915 in Bombala, the sixth child for Susan and Michael Hawkins who lived in Burton Street, Bombala. She attended the Catholic school in Bombala with her brothers and sister until the age of 12 years, when she transferred to the public school. School fees were six pence a week. She remembers being good at maths but not spelling. She and sister Rita enjoyed singing. She had to cross the river and railway bridges to get to and from school but didn’t like to walk over bridges, so brother Noel would piggy back her over both bridges. During this time the family moved from Burton Street to Badgery Street, Bombala. Eileen left school at 15 and helped at home for a while; brother Ronnie and sister Madge were still young and Rita was living at home with her children Judy and Bernard. At age 16 Eileen sourced herself a job housekeeping for Mrs Williams at Kerr’s Hotel for 15 shillings a week. She enjoyed the work and continued in the role until she married. Eileen tells how she and a work companion Kitty White managed the house keeping while Mrs Kerr was in Sydney, and on her return she was so impressed she increased her wages to 35 shillings a week. She remembers Father Keating having a quiet drink at the Hotel from time to time. Her teenage years were spent enjoying

the usual country activities, going to special sport events such as woodchop days, football games, Bombala shows and various dances around the district where she met Don Ryan. She tells some interesting stories of things she and her sister got up to. They also had the usual sister fights over clothes but stuck together when they needed to, like the time they all went to a Delegate dance and Rita left to come home to Bombala with a friend but they came across her walking back to Delegate. She had apparently abandoned her lift and was not accepting a lift from anyone else, however Don drove alongside of her and Eileen jumped out and helped push her into Don’s car and got her home. Eileen married Don Ryan on the August 6, 1938 in Bombala. They lived in Delegate from then to June/July 1956, during which time nine children were born. Money was short and Eileen had to learn to cook and sew, making clothes for the children from hand me downs. There was no electricity or town water so life was quite hard, Delegate’s weather could be extreme. The years were tough rearing the children while Don worked at many and varied jobs. He often spent weeks at a time away from home while she was left to cope with any sickness or accidents, like the time four of the children had whooping cough at the same time, and when John broke both arms roller skating or when Don broke his leg playing football and couldn’t work for 12 months. In 1956, after spending two winters living in a partially built house and tents, Eileen decided that job opportunities for the children and Don were not in Delegate. The decision was made to move to Helensburgh where she lives today, still at the same address. On arriving in Helensburgh Don had a job arranged for him at the local colliery but things got off to a slow start when the mine went on strike for 12 weeks and money became short again. Two more children were born in

Helensburgh and it was when the youngest was three years old that Eileen returned to work. She worked as a housekeeper at Garrawarra Nursing Home until she had to retire at age 65 (compulsory retirement). Eileen made a number of friends while working at Garrawarra and they would often enjoy going to shows in Sydney such as the Les Girls. On one occasion they missed the last train home, Eileen, being the thinker decided to seek out her son inlaw at the Sutherland Police Station who organised a lift home. They were promptly loaded into the back of the paddy wagon and were safely delivered home. Eileen and Don’s home at Helensburgh became known as “The Ranch and everyone was welcome, there would always be a kettle on the boil and you could be sure of a good meal and a good game of euchre. Eileen has taught all of her children and most of her grand children to play. Eileen later went to work at John Bosco at Engadine, preparing the evening meals for the brothers and the boys. Eileen can still tell a few stories about Brother Henry and the boys. Don and Eileen enjoyed a number of years caravanning including some great family holidays on the south coast. In 1992 after 54 years of marriage Don passed away. Eileen continued to carry on at The Ranch where the usual Christmas lunch for the whole family is still held today and she still makes the trifle. In recent years she developed an interest in horse racing and has often picked a winner. She recently picked the Cox Plate trifecta. She is a keen ruby league follower and this year had a win in the local tipping competition. Eileen’s family claim you have to check if she is home before you call as she is very often not at home. She likes to get her hair set each week and CAFE Club is a must on Thursdays. It was her request that she celebrate her 100th birthday at Kembla Grange Races with a hamburger and family and friends.

Deciding if pet ownership is right for you To ensure you make an informed decision about whether or not owning a pet is for you and to ensure you’ll be able to care for your pet well beyond the first six months ask yourself the following: t "N * SFBEZ UP UBLF SFTQPOTJCJMJUZ GPS B QFU PS BN * simply giving into my kid’s winging pleas? Do your homework Learn about the feeding, grooming and exercise your chosen breed requires, and tackle a few training manuals to make sure to get off on the right foot (or paw). Even if you've had pets in the past, it's a good idea to do some research; veterinarian recommendations for standards of care may have changed in the meantime. Thinking about these sorts of questions should help guide you to decide if your household is ready for the addition of an animal. These are big decisions, so don't rush.

Sheep business gains ground

The latest NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) research shows sheep breeding enterprises performed well in 2015, with many delivering 12 to 17 per cent increases in gross margins (GMs), equal to a rise of three to five dollars per dry sheep equivalent (DSE). DPI sheep development officer, Geoff Casburn, said the modelling compared GMs for 10 typical sheep enterprises. “The best results were for 20 micron Merino ewes joined to a maternal meat ram with a GM of $35.93 per DSE – that’s delivering $359 per hectare with an increase of $5.13 per DSE compared with last year,” Mr Casburn said. “Those results are due mainly to an increase in the market price for first cross ewe hoggets and an increase in prices for both Merino and crossbred wool. “Even though this enterprise had to purchase replacement ewes, the cost was off-set by selling double the number of ewe hoggets and a similar number of cast for age ewes.” A self-replacing 18 micron wool enterprise had the next highest GM increase at $4.17 per DSE, which was driven by a rise in wool value and the sale value of excess ewes. The 20 micron Merino and first cross ewe enterprises joined to terminal rams continued to perform well, even though they experienced a

Tertiary scholarships open Students committed to agriculture and rural communities are encouraged to apply for a NSW Farmers tertiary scholarship before mid February 2016. As part of its scholarship program, the association is offering five scholarships to the value of $4000 each for students committed to helping farming and rural communities grow and prosper. To be eligible, students must be in their second or subsequent year of university study, or first or subsequent year of vocational study. In addition, the applicant’s partner, parents or legal guardians must have been a full producer member of NSW Farmers for a period of two consecutive years at the time of application, or have been an active member of NSW Farmers in any category for a period of two consecutive years at the time of application. Special consideration will be given to students who have displayed an active involvement with

Something for producers to smile about - NSW Department of Primary Industries sheep development officer, Geoff Casburn, says models show that gross margins for many sheep enterprises have grown up to 17 per cent in 2015. reduction in GM of 13 and eight percent respectively, due mainly to the higher cost of replacements. Enterprises with the highest GMs also had the highest costs per hectare, which were off-set by higher returns. Mr Casburn said self-replacing 18 micron merino and 20 micron Merino enterprises joined to either terminal or maternal meat rams delivered the best average performance in the last five years, 2011 to 2015. “A 20 micron self-replacing Merino enterprise with 25 per cent of ewes joined to a terminal ram performed surprisingly well and it appears to cover all bases - breeding replacements, wool production and sale of prime lambs,” he said. “The average performance of many sheep enterprises in the last five years was similar to a 2015 wheat enterprise with a 3 tonne grain yield per hectare and grain price of $240 per tonne.” GMs are calculated based on running 10 DSE per hectare, taking account of variable costs directly associated with each enterprise and which does not include fixed costs such as labour, machinery or livestock inventories. the NSW Young Farmers program. NSW Farmers scholarships chair Sonia O’Keefe said the scholarship program was a valuable opportunity to encourage and support young people who were currently involved or had a genuine desire to contribute to rural and regional Australia. The NSW Farmers scholarship has benefited our 2015 scholarship recipient and primary school teacher, Phoebe Wood, over the past year: “The 2015 NSW Farmers scholarship has given me some valuable experience from the application process to attending the association’s annual conference. Both have given me confidence and an insight into the role of the association and how it achieves outcomes for rural and regional NSW. As a young teacher who is passionate about education in rural and regional Australia, the scholarship also helped me network and learn from other agriculturalists.”

Bee-aware campaign Healthier hives and better beekeepers will be the end result of the appointment of new extension staff across the country, tasked with improving the management of existing bee pests and diseases, and boosting surveillance for exotic pests such as Varroa mite. The Bee Biosecurity Officers will be funded by around $400,000 of industry funds through an increase in the honey levy, and contributions from state governments, with the positions sitting within departments of primary industries. The development of the National Bee Biosecurity Program and accompanying Biosecurity Code of Practice has been one of the priorities of the Honey Bee and Pollination R&D Program (HB&P Program) over recent years, and has been managed by Plant Health Australia (PHA). Beekeeper and HB&P Program advisory panel member James Kershaw says the improved access to expert advice will be very welcome. “The industry has recognised the

economic impact of established pests and diseases such as American foulbrood, small hive beetle and nosema, and the need to increase training and education for beekeepers. The Biosecurity Program and Code build upon lessons from other countries such as NZ and the US, as they try to deal with honey bee pests,” Mr Kershaw said. “We need to be proactive in our efforts to properly control these pests, because they’re reducing honey yields, damaging the health of bee colonies and greatly increasing management costs. “The Bee Biosecurity Officers will be on the ground from 2016, and highlight the partnership between governments and industry to deliver effective and improved outcomes for beekeepers.” Honey is not all that’s at risk from exotic pests and diseases – the value of pollination in Australia is estimated at $4-6 billion, with many crops dependent on pollination by honeybees for yield and quality.

Brand new family home - Light bright and modern All that is left to do is create a stunning low maintenance garden to suit your style.

Heather Anoleck Dip FMBM

Finance Consultant Whatever your home loan requirements, let me find the best solution for you!

MERRY CHRISTMAS! With Christmas almost upon us once again, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support over the past 12 months, and wish you all a very Merry Christmas! This period is traditionally a very busy time for those involved in the housing industry, with a lull expected just before Christmas, until mid January. Then it all begins again! As we come to the end of 2015, and look forward to the new year, you might take some time to think about your situation. 2016 may be the year you hope to buy your first home or investment property. There may well be opportunities and challenges in the coming year. Interest rates have remained low this year, and may or may not continue that way in the 2016. Some Lenders have tightened up on their policies and standards, particularly in the investment loan area. If you are thinking of buying your first home or investment property next year, it makes sense to speak to someone who is on top of the different Lender offers & policies, and who can give you expert advice for your situation. Everyone’s circumstances are different, and I offer you a personal approach, with extensive experience.

CATERING

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. And between the custard-coated serves of plum pudding, the slow-roasted cuts of lamb and the occasional Christmas tipple with friends and family, it’s inevitable many of us will over-indulge in the naughty but oh-so-nice Christmas fare gracing our tables. Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) Chief Executive Officer Anita Hobson-Powell said the secret to keeping the kilos in check this Christmas was to eat in moderation and maintain a consistent exercise regime. “With plenty of shopping, cooking and entertaining on the to-do list over the Christmas break, it’s easy to abandon your regular work-out,â€? Ms Hobson-Powell said. “However, it’s important to keep in mind that it’s much easier to moderate eating and exercise habits over Christmas than it is to try and shift excess weight postholiday season. If you’re going to indulge in that mince pie or pavlova, be sure to continue incorporating plenty of physical activity into your daily routine.â€? Ms Hobson-Powell shared the following top tips from ESSA to beat the Christmas bulge: • Pound the pavement Rather than purchasing gifts online, hit the shops to find the perfect presents for your family and friends. You’ll not only tick items off your shopping list, but keep fit in the process. For some extra exercise, park a few blocks away from the shopping centre. The added bonus is that you’ll avoid all the Christmas traffic and won’t have to spend hours looking for a car park. • Give the gift of exercise When selecting presents for your loved ones, why not consider gifts that get the family moving? Passes to your local rock climbing centre, a basketball hoop and ball for the kids or even a volleyball set for the park or pool offer hours of fun. • Dance the day away In addition to the standard backyard cricket set, consider setting up a designated dance floor on Christmas day.

This will not only get the family moving, but also add to the festive spirit. • Get creative Challenge everyone to bring a healthy dish to Christmas lunch that embraces the flavours of summer. Mangoes and pomegranates are some ingredients that taste great in salads and look great on your plate. Healthy and delicious can go hand-in-hand! • Design a Christmas quest If you have children, add to the fun on Christmas morning by creating a treasure hunt. Hide a handful of presents around the backyard and watch them run! Where possible, place presents in the fork of a tree so children have to climb to reach it or at the top of a hill for them to run up. Better yet, encourage them to bounce their way across the trampoline to reach their gift! Christmas calorie consumption — Fast facts When piling our plates high on Christmas Day, it’s easy to forget just how many calories we’re consuming. Here’s a breakdown of just how many calories are in our favourite Christmas treats and what you can do to burn the excess energy: • Roast lamb (approx. 100g) — 201 calories Walk the dog for one hour • One mini mince pie (approx. 60g) — 245 calories Run for 22 minutes • Slice of Christmas pudding (approx. 100g) — 279 calories Swim for 45 minutes • One rum ball (approx. 20g) — 80 calories Perform 100 star jumps • Single iced gingerbread man (approx. 35g) — 144 calories Skip for 13 minutes at moderate intensity • Slice of pavlova, topped with whipped cream and fresh fruit (approx. 100g) — 292 calories Take a one hour Pilates class For guidance regarding an exercise routine, please visit www.essa.org.au to locate your local accredited exercise physiologist.

NEWS

Wednesday December 30, 2015

New Year’s celebrations It has long been tradition for those of the Bombala district to head to Delegate for New Year’s Eve, and most years there are also plenty of visitors from further afield swarming in to celebrate in the small town! That’s because the Delegate Hotel hosts a fantastic New Year’s Eve Street Party every year, with this Thursday night set to be no different. The main street will close from 6pm to allow the party to roll on, with a barbecue sizzling away from 7pm while the bar does a roaring trade. The kids will be kept happily entertained, with the jumping castle proving popular all evening, while one of the main highlights of the night will be a late-

in-the-year visit from Santa. While Santa is busy delighting all with his annual lolly drop, the stage will also be set for some great live music from popular duo, MixFix. Yes, Mel and Greg are returning to Delegate’s Street Party after an awesome NYE last year, covering all the great songs we know and love from the 80s, 90s and today. Nicky to take on Hair Bombala’s Nicky Gulliford is proof that hard work and perseverance really does pay off. The determined local has just completed her apprenticeship with Hair on Main Street, and not only is she now a fully qualified hairdresser, she’s about to buy the business! Nicky’s apprenticeship proved reasonably challenging as the mother of two juggled family life, full time hours and regular trips to TAFE, the first class of which she attended in Sydney, a very long drive from Bombala. She soon abandoned the idea of training so far away and crossed over to CIT in Canberra, with her husband’s employer kindly letting him start later every Tuesday to get the children to school while Nicky studied. She worked away diligently, and with the support of her family, Nicky’s

apprenticeship was completed this “Firstly I’d just really like to month. congratulate Nicky on her hard Proving very timely, current Hair on work and on completing her apprenticeship,” Tanya said. “I’ll certainly still be hairdressing here at Hair on Main, and I’m incredibly grateful for the support I’ve had here, but we’re both looking forward to a new chapter next year.” Nicky said that there will be very few changes in the initial year that she takes on ownership, and she intends to build her client base and continue learning. “I just want to thank Tanya so much for the opportunity to get into hairdressing like this, and I’d also like to thank the Hair on Main team, my family and friends for all of their support,” she said. Trail bike riders: stay safe, ride legally these holidays Authorities are reminding trail bike riders to ride safely, stick to legal riding areas, and steer clear of rail trails and walking tracks. The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning’s (DELWP) Trail Bike Project Manager Roger Pitt said: “Trail bike riding is increasingly popular in Gippsland, but riders must remember that in forests and parks motorcycles can only be used on formed roads and vehicle tracks. “Rail trails and walking tracks are not designed for motorbikes as their surface and drainage can be easily damaged and motorbike riders are a hazard to others using the trails. It’s also an offence in forests and parks to ride offroad on informal tracks and the natural terrain because of the environmental damage it causes. “In addition, if you are unlicensed or your bike is unregistered you are only allowed to ride on private land or at motorcycle club tracks. “It’s a good idea for parents to enrol young riders in a club so they have somewhere to ride and get some safe riding instruction. Cr Michael Rossiter, Mayor of Latrobe City Council said: “Complaints about noise and dust from motorbikes peak during the Christmas holiday season. “Riding in bushland reserves in Latrobe City is not allowed. We urge everyone using motorbikes to stick to formed roads, and if they are riding on private land to be considerate of

nearby neighbours. Victoria has approximately 49,000km of roads and vehicle tracks through State forest and National Parks which are available for use by licensed riders on registered bikes. “If you are riding in our forests and parks over summer please be extra careful and reduce your speed on narrow tracks, at blind corners and around camping areas, Mr Pitt said. “Wear full coverage protective clothing and motorcycle boots, a helmet, goggles, gloves, body armour, and knee guards. Make sure you keep hydrated and ride with someone else in case of an emergency. Riding a motorcycle off formed roads, damaging public land, unlicensed riding and using unregistered mini-bikes on public land are all serious offences with fines potentially exceeding $1000. Further information about trail bike riding in State Forest and other areas of public land can be found on www.delwp. vic.gov.au. Information on motorcycle clubs and venues is at www.motorcyclingvic.com.au

Report environmental crime to DELWP phone 136 186 or Crimestoppers phone 1800 33 000. Information about motorbike riders riding unregistered or unlicensed bikes or causing a public safety risk should be referred to Victoria Police.

A lifetime of commitment to cricket on the Monaro Nick Chapman Tony Mackenzie is a former local cricketer and life member of The Monaro District Cricket Association. He has lived in Cooma since 1959 and has been an avid cricket fan his entire life. Like many Australians, he began his cricketing career playing in the backyard with his brothers and continued playing through school in the Hunter Valley. He then moved to Sydney for tertiary education before taking up a position with the CSIRO. While in Sydney, Tony played A and B grade in the Sydney Churches Cricket Association competition but had his heart set on moving to the country. Unable to get a job in the country with CSIRO, he took up a position with Cooma Council where he worked until his retirement. Christmas shoot report

Hugh Fairfield-Smith takes aim.

Shooter takes aim.

Cooma Field and Game’s Christmas shoot saw an excellent attendance, despite the hot and windy conditions. 81 shooters from Canberra, Bermagui, Wagga and even some guests from the USA did their best to keep track of targets that due to the wind proved even harder to hit than normal. The day was run with a side x side shotgun event in conjunction with the more common over and under. With a sub event “The Springing teal challenge” the office staff deserve special thanks for keeping up and getting all the results tallied by the end of the day. Adam Mower and the set up crew did an excellent job in advance to offer a fantastic range of targets over two ranges. The targets held up extremely well considering the blustery conditions and the day flowed well. Lunch was a highlight. The Nassar Family from Roses Restaurant, cooking up a feast that had to be seen and tasted to be believed. Athletics season is at its half way mark Twenty local Cooma records and two athletics ACT state records have been broken so far this season. Leading athlete on the local scene has been U/12 Reuben Hooper with four to his credit over three events. Reuben Hooper had lowered the U/12 -50m, 70m and 200m hurdles twice. Reuben first record came in the 50 m with 7.25 sec (ET). This time broke a 20 year record of Jason Galloway at 7.26 sec (HH). Two weeks later Reuben shattered the 200m hurdles 34.40 sec (ET) to eclipse the old record held by Jesse Williams at 36.10 sec (HH). The following week Reuben was collecting his third record, this time in the 70m with 9.55 sec (ET). The previous record as held by Craig Willock at 9.96 sec (HH) set in 1997-98 season. At the end of November, Reuben set a new mark for the 200m hurdles at 33.06 sec (ET), reducing his own record mark by 1.34 sec. Molly Norris U/10 girl has three records in her basket, with two in the club throwing and one in the 200m hurdles. Molly broke the club throwing record twice so far this season with a first up throw of 18.12m and again a month later with extremely impressive heave of 23.00m. Molly also found she could hurdle and on her first attempt over the 200m hurdles beat Lilly Jauncey’s 2014 record by half a second. Molly crossed the finishing line in 42.48 sec (ET). Then came U/14 Brenna Clayton, U/13 Ruby Mould and U/13 Jordan Davis also claiming two local records. Brenna Clayton is our best female javelin thrower and this season has set a record, as there was a reallocation of her age group javelins weight. Brenna set the record at 19.79m and has increased the distance out to 21.02m. Ruby Mould put her pace to good use over the 200m hurdles, in her first run at this distance Ruby posted a excellent time of 35.69 sec (ET) to snatch the record from Alyssa Zusak’s 2014 effort of 36.54 sec (HH). Ruby has improved her mark over

the hurdles at her next outing down to 34.94 sec (ET). U/13 Jordan Davis throwing the hammer in the senior’s side of our centre as a U/14 broke the U/13 record held by Corey Thomas at 23.01m in 2001. Jordan started the season with 23.91m and has progressed the record out to 30.86m. Along the way Jordan has reset the athletics ACT state U/14 record twice at major competition this season, at present he holds the state record at 30.81m. Other athletes who have broken centre records so far this season U/9 Boys • Max Boole lowering the 50m down to 7.89 sec (ET), breaking Blayne Thomas’ 2004 record of 8.16 sec (HH). • Joshua Southam in the club throwing, surpassing Stephen Davis’ 2014/15 record of 21.55 m to stamp his mark in the record book with a dynamic throw of 21.88m. U/10 Girls • Lilli Utrush on her first attempt at the club throwing broke the 2014/15 record of 16.17m set by Lilly Jounce. Lilli’s throw was a long 16.70m. • Next thrower after Lilli was Natalie Revelant who snatched Lilli’s record with a toss of 17.40m. • Molly Norris who was the last thrower on the day pushed the record out to 18.12m. U/16 men • William Reid created a new record for the U/16 men with his first up run of 33.39 sec (ET) on our last competition in November. U/14 Women • Maria Tarasyuk posted our last record for the year 2015 when she broke Miruna Moruz’s record of 38.97 sec (HH) in the 200m hurdles. She flew over the five flights to knock off nearly 1.5 seconds off the Miruna mark in 37.51 sec (ET). We look forward to the second half of the season to see if these and many more athletes can keep improving their performances and surpass their age group records.

Barilaro opens new cricket nets The official opening of the new cricket nets at Rotary Oval took place on Wednesday December 16. The opening was well attended by members of the Monaro District Cricket Association as well, representatives from council and Member for the Monaro John Barilaro. MDCA life member Tony Mackenzie had the honour of officially opening the nets and spoke about what a great improvement the facility is. Tony had a big part in the construction of the original nets 40 years ago, which relied heavily on volunteer efforts and funding from Rotary. The new nets also relied on volunteer efforts and the MDCA are very grateful for

everyone who lent a hand. Funding for the facility came from local council and the State Government, and John Barilaro had the honour of being the first batsman to use the nets after the official opening against the bowling of Cooma mayor Dean Lynch. The new nets feature an updated synthetic pitch which will provide a safer and more appealing playing surface for local cricketers. People are already making use of the facility and it can be booked for training by contacting the Cooma Visitor’s Centre.
