Vescio advised that Council believed ‘the design of the Snowy River GPSC is critical in achieving both an aesthetically pleasing structure for this visually prominent site and more importantly, a building out of which delivery of optimal interdisciplinary health care can be achieved for our community’. ‘This has necessitated an extensive collaborative engagement process occurring up-front with an evidenced centered approach encompassing a wide range of specialists including designers, architects, planners, builders and critically, the users being the health professionals, staff and their patients,’ Mr Vescio added. ‘Everyone should be pleased with the official

tick of this phase. The development of the Snowy River GPSC remains on target.’ The approved plans can be viewed on Council’s web page or at Council offices in Berridale or Jindabyne. Council is now in the process of selecting a consortium to construct and fit-out the new GP Super Clinic with an opening date scheduled for early 2014. The Men From Snowy River marchers

The Men from Snowy River Marchers 1916 taken at the Cooma Showground Pavilion. There are a few young children in the photo, some of whom may still be alive. If anyone can be recognised, please can the reader contact the Snowy Alpine Heritage Association.

The Snowy Alpine Heritage Association is delighted to receive a grant for its research into those men from the Shire who joined the famous “Men From Snowy River” WW1 recruitment march. The local Association is one of the 30 recipients from a pool of about 70 applicants to receive a grant from funding provided by the Heritage Council of NSW through the NSW Office of Heritage and Environment and administered by the Royal Australian Historical Society. The funding is designed to support small local history projects. For the 2012 round, the RAHS was particularly interested in supporting projects which explored a contribution made by local communities towards World War One, the centenary of which will be commemorated in 2014.

The “Men From Snowy River March” began in Delegate with 14 volunteers on Thursday January 6, 1916. It is believed perhaps 10 came from the Snowy River Shire. The men then set out for the training camp at Goulburn, a distance of some 220 miles or almost 570 kilometres. Their route took them through the towns along what is now the Monaro Highway, reaching Cooma on January 15 and arriving in Goulburn on January 29, 1916 with 144 recruits altogether. The project is part of a joint research project on the men and women from the district who served in the First World War. The research committee includes Dr Rosemary Stewart-Beardsley, Mrs Greta Jones and Ms Leisa Caldwell. “We will welcome information

The main objective of the Snowy Alpine Heritage Association’s research project is to identify the local volunteers and write a brief history of the service of as many of them as is possible to identify. To do this, members of the research team will undertake a thorough search for the existence of any relevant letters, diaries and photographs of these men as well as newspaper accounts of both the march and the theatres of war they served in overseas. The results of this research will be published in an illustrated history of the “Men From Snowy River March” as it related to these men, the conditions they faced, both en route to Goulburn and thereafter. This publication will be made available at Information Centres within the Snowy River Shire.

Steiner Education in Cooma Rudolf Steiner Schools is hoping to expand into Cooma in 2014, with the world-renowned educational organisation looking to establish the Silver Wattle Steiner School here in town. It is currently assessing several sites for the school, including the former site of St Patrick’s Primary School in Mittagang Road. The idea began in Cooma via a family who hosted a Steiner playgroup, which has been running now for two years, and parents attending the playgroup became interested in the idea of bringing a Steiner School to Cooma as well. From there, Steiner Education approached the NSW Board of Studies and while the process is still in progress, the Board is satisfied at this point with regards to the curriculum. The globally successful Steiner Schools began with the first Waldorf School, which was established by Dr Rudolf Steiner in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1919, coming straight out of the chaos that was Europe at the end of the First World War. The War had completely broken down the old world order and opened the door to sweeping social change, which impacted on education as well.

Steiner Schools differ from the more conventional schools in that they do not have a Principal, are independent, self-governing and non-hierarchical, however they all follow the pattern of the first Waldorf School to some degree. Steiner Schools work out of the educational philosophy and principles of the late Dr Steiner and endeavour to provide an inspiring education, designed around motivating students to achieve their best results at the best level of their individual abilities. Steiner Schools encourage children to work towards finding their own identity, their meaning and purpose in life via connections with the community and the natural world. The Organisation has had a lot of enquiries, following the distribution of a brochure to gauge interest in establishing one of the Schools in Cooma and a final decision will be made from there. If it is decided to proceed with the school, the process of establishing it will begin again with the Board of Studies. There are already Steiner schools in the region, with Mumbulla (Primary school only) in Bega and Orana School in Canberra, which caters for students

Cooma North Preschool’s 60th Birthday Cooma North Preschool celebrated its 60th birthday last Saturday, with special activities at the preschool and an anniversary dinner. An initiative of a number of Snowy wives, the preschool has since started thousands of local children on their educational path. On Friday October 26, the members of the Cooma Hospital Auxiliary were invited to lunch at “Banool” the home of Ross and Janette Langwill. President Janette welcomed members to a delicious luncheon in honor of auxiliary member Mary McKee.

Mary has been a member of the Cooma Hospital Auxiliary for 27 years serving most of those years in executive positions, serving as secretary, president and recently as treasurer. Mary was also the coordinator of the kiosk at the hospital for more than 12 years and recently decided to step aside from the position of treasurer and co-ordinator for a well earned rest. The luncheon was to thank Mary for her years of dedication and hard work given so freely. These couches will cost approximately $10,500. The fundraising ventures provide equipment that is some times life saving or equipment to make patients more comfortable during their stay in hospital. The auxiliary would welcome new members and meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month beginning at 2pm in the Education Centre at the hospital.

Another bit of railway history arrives… The paybus in position, with, from left, John Cowper, Paul Crollick, Rod Clancy, Alan Ward and John Gibson.

New logo for Cooma There has been much discussion concerning Cooma-Monaro Shire Council’s new corporate logo and the town branding concept of “Capital of the Snowy Mountains”. The general consensus has been that it is a bold move by the newlyelected council but a much-needed move. There has been positive acknowledgement of a modern image that has relevance and a fresh perspective to the future marketing direction and public relations face of Cooma.

Driver Alan Ward at the controls of the paybus. The bus needed a bit of a push to get it into position.

There has also been speculation as to the perceived cost of this bold move and its impact on the council budget. To this end, I can assure the community there will be a planned transition and implementation period for the corporate logo. Council’s current stock of letterheads, uniforms and other peripheral support materials carrying the old logo will only be replaced as these stocks are used up. This policy will apply to capital items such as logos on council cars and building signage on a prioritised marginal cost basis that will not have major budget impacts on planned projects such as upgrades to footpaths etc.

Revitalising the township and Centennial Park As part of the new council’s economic development strategy, a revitalisation of Cooma’s face is being proposed and a Landscape Concept Plan, developed with DSB Landscape Architects, highlighting these proposals is now on public exhibition. Cooma Monaro Railway has taken delivery of another piece of our local railway history, with the arrival on Saturday of the paybus.

This diesel powered ‘bus’ travelled on the railway lines between stations, literally handing out money. It carried a driver, a paymaster and a

School bus accident A busload of students from Bombala and Monaro High Schools were lucky to escape injury when their bus left the road about 20km north of Cooma last Thursday. The year eight and nine students were on route to the Australian University for a careers day. At about 9.15am, the bus drifted onto the wrong side of the road and onto the road verge, contacting the embankment. A teacher on board the bus, Warwick Long, quickly reached the driver’s seat, steering the bus away from the embankment and put his foot on the brake, bringing the bus to a halt on the wrong side of the guard rail.

The students were evacuated up an adjacent hill and the teachers on board started a set procedure to advise the schools of the incident. The bus driver and one student were taken to Cooma Hospital and the student released at about midday. The other students were brought back to Cooma, had lunch and the Bombala students transported back to their school and their parents. Counsellors were available for the students at the scene of the incident and later. Bombala High School principal Phillip Steel said the whole school community had ”pulled together very well”.

guard, plus envelopes containing workers’ pay. While the pay system has changed over the last three decades, the bus is in original

condition. It was bought by a doctor from Holbrook who allowed it to remain at Canberra, provided it was looked after.

Negotiations have now led to the bus being brought to Cooma where is be part of the CMR’s heritage display.

The plan reviews the current state of the town centre environs and highlights proposals to enhance the streetscape, amenities, footpaths and road entrances. It also proposes designer options for Centennial Park and the band shell. At the same time, I would like to remind residents that a lot of work on improving the CBD and Centennial Park has already been completed, for example, improvements to the treescape in Vale and Massie streets, new pavers for the Sharp and Bombala Street roundabout, refurbished amenities in Centennial Park and upgraded electrics and lighting in Centennial Park. Council is seeking community comment on the concept plan as it will set the direction for upgrading Cooma over the next few years. Your input is vital to the success of this plan and the future of Cooma. The concept plan can be viewed at the Cooma-Monaro Shire Council office, the Cooma Visitor Centre and at the Cooma Library as well as on council’s website. A public meeting to explain the proposals contained in the plan has been scheduled for Thursday, 8 November 2012 at 6pm at the Cooma Library. Written submissions will be accepted by COB on Thursday, 15 November 2012.

Council meetings outside Cooma In line with public interest comments obtained during the Integrated Planning and Reporting process, council has decided to hold its meetings in villages across the shire on a rotational basis, twice a year. The village meetings scheduled are: Numeralla in November 2012; Michelago in April 2013; Nimmitabel in November 2013; Bredbo in April 2014; Numeralla in November 2014. Council hopes this new process will result in greater community participation in council activities and processes.

CLAIRE’S CAROUSEL

the

postman calls

Here’s a brief gardening diary for our local readers: October 20 – do a bit of weeding, assess need for flame-thrower or similar to remove worst weed infestation. Stop and smell the lilac – lovely – look admiring at new growth appearing as spring warmes up. Sunday October 21 – look in amazement at masses and masses of baby apricots on the tree that only produced three last season and about 10 the pervious season. Do quick calculation on how heavy the branches will be with all the fruit. Mow lawns, stand back and admire the apricot tree – again. Check emerging lillies. Once again, stare in amazement and anticipation at little apricots. Monday October 22 – scrap the frost off the windscreen. Rush to work. In the afternoon, suddenly and with trepidation, remember the previous day’s joy at the sight of all those little apricots. Check tree. Weep! Tuesday October 23 – scrap more B! frost off the windscreen. Immediately check whether any of the remaining apricots have not also been turned black in the frost. Curse! Check emerging lillies – curse more vigorously. Consult the website for gardening advice for the arctic! Spring on the Monaro… As our Prime Minister wants us all to learn Hindi, Japanese and other Asian languages, The Postman really has to ask – are politicians in India, Japan and Indonesia asking their residents to brush up on Australian? Shouldn’t this initiative be a two-way street? Hindi could come in handy – some of the telemarketers and others who ring The Postman’s telephone certainly have English as a second, or possibly 15th language. Being able to explain to these callers, in their own language, why they should desist in calling could be very handy. Various versions of “Go away and stop annoying me”, spoken in English, seem to be lost in translation.

Many happy returns of the day, Kathleen and congratulations on your many achievements.

Riposte Lisa Ashurst I have to wonder about some of the stuff that finds its way onto the comments page of my website. It’s my business website, plus I have a blog on there but at no time have I ever said “Sure, I do free plugs for other sites all the time so just put a link to yours in your comment and I’ll approve it!” I’ve never said it was fine to attach a YouTube video either but there you go, I inevitably get comments with one attached that’s advertising something or other that has nothing to do with me or my site. Is it just me or do others agree that this kind of thing is a tad ill mannered? I know I would not put a link to my own site in a comment I left on someone else’s because it would feel like I was taking advantage somehow and like I said, I think it’s a bit tacky. Seems a lot of people out there think otherwise because I often end up wasting a lot of time deleting comment after comment that either has one of those links in it or else there’s a video attached that’s trying to sell something. Well hey, my business website is not a freebie billboard and despite how flattering the comments may be, if they come with an unsolicited link/

video attached, I delete them. End of story. But apparently that’s what happens when a website becomes popular and at the risk of sounding truly obnoxious, mine has taken off like the proverbial. Thousands of comments (around 700 – 1000 per week), and even greater number of hits (not everyone leaves a comment I guess) and my host has had to create an archive to cope with all the traffic! A check to ensure that all these comments were coming in from legitimate sources revealed that yes, they are, and according to my site host my business website is just huge! That was totally unexpected. Sure, I had hoped that it would attract some sort of attention but I really didn’t expect what’s happened to have happened, but I guess that also explains why I’m being inundated with spam. Fortunately there are still heaps of comments that aren’t spam, which takes the edge off having to go through regular deleting sprees. I’ve had so much of it lately that last week’s blog ran along the same lines as this week’s column, as in “Please let’s not waste each other’s time here – yours in attaching the link and mine in deleting it because I don’t do free plugs!!!” I don’t know how successful it’s going to be but you never know. Seriously people, I’m just so over it.

NEW REQUIREMENTS FOR DRINKING WATER CARTAGE As of 1 September 2012 the Public Health Act 2010 and Public Health Regulation 2012 came into practice. The new Act and Regulation continue the provisions of the earlier legislation and include a number of changes that will affect a wide range of industries. Of particular interest to the Water Industry are changes to the drinking water safety measures that apply to suppliers of drinking water and effect private suppliers and water carters. Water carters provide a drinking water supply in areas where other water supplies are insufficient or temporarily unsuitable. NSW Health and NSW Food Authority have developed Guidelines to help water carters provide safe drinking water and comply with the requirements of the Public Health Act 2010, the Public Health Regulation 2012, the Food Act 2003 and the Local Government Act 1993. The regulation requires water carters and water supply utilities to make and maintain records detailing the customers they supply water to. The records are to include: • Name of the water supplier from which the water carter received water • Name and address of each person to whom the water carter supplies water • Place, date, time and volume of water supplied to that person • Details of any substances other than drinking water transported in any water tank used by the water carter • Dates on which any water tank used by the water carter is cleaned Water carters are required to notify the NSW Food Authority of their business and obtain the necessary approvals from the water utility or supplier of the water. Documentation and records provide evidence that the water carter’s business is being operated appropriately. These records and logs may be requested by Public Health or Council to check on business operation and provides assurance that any water supplied for drinking purposes is suitable for safe consumption. For further information contact council on 02 6455 1777 or NSW Public Health at www.health.nsw.gov.au/phact

Water Week 2012 To celebrate Water Week 2012 Cooma-Monaro Shire played host to the Eaton Gorge Theatre Company who performed their show ‘Tapstar Saves Water’ for the primary school children in the Shire.

‘Tapstar Saves Water’ focuses on a typical Australian family called the Wastings and their appliances that are long suffering through the overuse of water. Tapstar is the Water Saving Super Hero who, with the assistance of Drippette and children from the audience, comes to the rescue and converts Granny and Oscar Wasting to become Water Wise. The shows were well received and over 900 children attended. They were well skilled in their knowledge due, in part, to previous Water Week promotions run by the Council. Resources were also left with the teachers to continue the Water Wise message.

New System Implementation Council will commence the transfer to a new Corporate Software System this week. During the transition process there will be reduced availability for some Council counter services and manual processes will be in place. The new system is expected to be operational by Monday 5 November. We ask for your patience during this time if processing times are slightly longer than expected.

Vale: Alan Grosvenor 1925-2012 Alan Grosvenor (Gravenor) died at the age of 86, on Wednesday, October 24, in Cooma Hospital - just four hours short short of his 87th birthday. A prolific artist, Alan leaves behind a legacy of art works which vividly capture the landscape of the Snowy Mountains and other parts of Australia wherever he chose to wander, palette and brushes in hand. Born on October 25 in Northbridge, Alan attended Northbridge Primary School and then completed his schooling at North Sydney High School, after which he attended North Sydney Trades School and entered the building trade. In 1942 he joined the Department of Aircraft Production where Beaufort, Beaufighters and later five Lancaster bombers, were constructed and he was

employed in the design department. From there he attended the Sydney Technical College School of Aeronautical Engineering and during the last 12 months of his period there he spent with QANTAS in the drawing office doing design work for components for aircraft. At the conclusion of the war, Alan married Morea Blakey and he resumed work as a builder on Sydney’s North Shore. Their daughter Robyn Louise was born in 1954. Soon Alan was buying and selling houses, an activity which expanded to include development and real estate sales with the opening of an office in Dee Why. A l a n Grosvenor took up painting on the advice of his doctor as a form of relaxation from his business. He took lessons with a Royal Academy exhibitor Gerald Nathan and the war artist Geoff Townsend. From those two people he learnt both sides of art – one a discipline and the very photographic type of art and the other one was Impressionism. Up until then boating had been Alan’s chief recreational pursuit and he designed and built boats from an early age – during the 1930s. He spent many happy hours sailing with his daughter Robyn who crewed for him in competition. A champion sailor, he was FREE HOME DELIVERY COOMA AREA* *conditions apply president of Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club for a time. It was his wish that following his death that “a bow wave” be held for him rather than a wake. In 1959, Alan Grosvenor came to the Snowy Mountains for a ski holiday at Perisher Valley. This was the first of many painting 22 Bombala St, Cooma trips to Jindabyne. Alan changed tack in 1963 from

real estate development to focus more on painting, however he remained in the construction industry. His paintings were beginning to sell well. By 1968 he had purchased property in Jindabyne and he opened Kunama Gallery in 1972. It is estimated that during his artistic career, he produced 6,000 paintings which

He encouraged them, as Geoff Townsend taught him, to “overcome their fear of failure by not being able to produce good work, to get into a period of throwing paint around, loosen up, conquer that fear of failure, have a don’t care day, just throw it around and if it falls apart, try again” (Alan Grosvenor 2012) One of his students, Elisabeth Waite floated into his private life in the early 1980’s and they subsequently married following his divorce from Morea. Unfortunately the marriage ended in a divorce several years later. Alan travelled extensively, including the United Kingdom, in order to paint. One of his favourite painting destinations was Tasmania which he visited six times. Other parts of Australia included Broken Hill, the Pilbra and Cunnamulla where he painted and traded his paintings for opals rather than digging for them. Cloud formations and eucalyptus trees were a feature of Alan’s paintings.

To achieve the luminous effect, he invariably painted the canvas white before applying colour. Whilst at Cunnamulla he noted the cloud formations there were reflecting the colour of the soil underneath because of the sun hitting the ground, the red of the ground was reflected in the whiteness of the cloud in the opal fields of south west Queensland. This caused him to drive into town to Cunnamulla township “to buy a tube of cadmium red because I did not have a tube of cadnium red in palette because it was a very high chroma colour which is unusually necessary in the Australian landscape. With the three primaries he used, I usually use two yellows, two reds and two blues. The two reds being cadmium red or alizarin, magenta which another light red, and then in the yellow I use raw sienna and yellow ochre, and with the blue, ultramarine and cobalt. They come up in Heysen’s and most Australian landscape artists work”. (Grosvenor 2012) Noeline Dahlen Maclean met Alan in 1991 and so began 21 happy years for them both. They purchased the old Mendooran school bus and they had great fun converting it into a mobile art studio for their many field trips. Alan Grosvenor is survived by his partner Noeline; his daughter Robyn and step-son John. Noeline and Robyn will continue in partnership to run the Kunama Gallery. The family gathered for a private cremation ceremony officiated by the Reverend Owen Davies in Canberra on Tuesday October 30. You are invited to celebrate Alan’s life with the family at 4.30pm, on Friday, November 9 at Jindabyne’s Kunama Gallery Pictured, the late Alan Grosvenor.

Cooma Rotarians complete another PNG project Five volunteers from the Rotary Club of Cooma have just returned from a six day trip to PNG to complete three water projects for local villagers. The volunteers, David Holgate, Oscar Holgate, Gary Proesser and Darrell Gaukroger were in the team organised by Peter Davis – who had just completed his 26th Kokoda Trail trek. The first scheme was to supply yearround drinking water to Bisiatabu primary school of 100 students who had previously had to carry water from faraway creeks during the dry season. A 5000 litre tank was supplied and guttering had to be fixed to the school building along with the downpipe and underground piping to the tank. To complete this project a single standpipe was cemented into position. The second project involved supplying a constant water supply

for the Sogeri Medical Centre, whose previous supply from the Sogeri State School had been cut off. To achieve this the team ran a 32mm poly pipe some 750 metres from an existing spring and connected it to a tank at the medical centre. Several standpipes were connected to the pipe along the way to supply water to the landholders through whose land the pipe ran. Another line was run from the pipe to the local Police station and the cells were given access to the water. These cells had not been used for some years owing to lack of water and prisoners had to be taken to Port Moresby – some 17 miles away. During the process of connecting the water to the centre it was found that the sewerage had been blocked for some time so the team cleared the blockage while they were there. The third project

was at Sogeri Primary School of 400 pupils. It was discovered that when there were power failures in the village (rather commonplace) the pump used to obtain water from the town supply was

unable to supply drinking water to the school so the school would be promptly closed down and the pupils sent home. In order to remedy this unsatisfactory situation a 5000 litre tank was

supplied and plumbed to a standpipe giving them a constant source of water during the year. Funding for these projects was made available through Network Kokoda and

Snowliner’s Kimberley experience

On the road again as day 7 rolls around. Saying goodbye to Home Valley Station we make a stop at the Lookout. Instead of admiring the views back over the Pentecost and Cockburn Ranges we are all busy on our phones – one of the few places with mobile coverage. Morning tea above the banks of the Durack River. Paddy Durack was one of the first white settlers in the Kimberleys. We need to travel 300kms along the Gibb River Road today so we are off again bouncing along, dropping stitches, heads nodding and having the essential lolly run. A short diversion off the Gibb River Road on the Kalumburu Road we stop at the actual Gibb River – don’t get too close to the cooling waters crocs are still around here. Roast chickens and salad and we dine like “Kings in Grass Castles” Mount Barnett Roadhouse is a toilet stop and opportunity to change into our swimmers. Alfie asked the manager how long he had been at Mount Barnett and he responded with 3 months and not much longer! Deisel is $2.05 a litre here. Galvans Gorge is our next stop with an 800 metre walk to the Gorge with a bit of rock clambering. Towering cliffs and standing at the very top a giant boab tree firmly routed in the rocks. We have also seen our first rock art here. Our last leg into Imintji and Bell Gorge Wilderness Lodge was completed in darkness – running the gauntlet with cattle on the road, Rob unfortunately hit one. What a welcoming party we drove into – staff waving and guiding us along with torches – at least we are in the right place. A fantastic meal was provided and a fine session organised. We have now raised $125 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Laying in bed tonight we can hear

the cattle roaming through the Lodge grounds, their evidence clearly visible in the morning. What a fantastic place we were in last night – safari tents with a difference. Corrugated iron walls in the lower sections of the bathroom, slatted timber floor – no problem with flooding floors here. Talking about flooding it is a mammoth job to secure everything for the wet season and of course the reverse applies to ready these accommodation facilities for the influx of tourists each year. The camp at Bell Gorge Wilderness Lodge was run by Teddy Evans from Wales – John’s ancestors hailed from Wales in the UK.

take much notice but we were in for a surprise. Approaching 6 abreast were riders holding back several thousand cattle being mustered on Napier Downs – a once a year occurrence. Ryan turns the vehicle off to allow the cattle to pass. As the riders approach Rob’s vehicle one rider has problems with his stirrups and when looking up there are a dozen cameras witnessing his manoeuvres. We continue on to approach another mob and then

stock from stampeding and the new – a helicopter pushing the stock along. Total stock numbers estimated to be about 4,000. We then enjoyed lunch at Windjana Gorge, early discussions were all about the cattle mustering. While Rob prepared our lunch Ryan escorted us on a short walk in the Gorge – temperatures in the mid 30’s. In one section of the river here we would have seen 10 freshwater crocodiles. Shell fossils are in some of the rock formations. The visual impact of the cliffs surrounding us is impossible to do justice to by words alone. Leaving the Gibb River Road on t h e

This would have to be one of the best places we stayed. After fueling at Imintji we continue east along the Gibb River Road following the King Leopold Ranges with Queen Victoria watching over the pass. As we approached the pass several horses ran towards us, thinking these were brumbies we did not

we came out of the last water section to see a 2 metre croc laying in the water – they keep telling us the freshwater crocs will only give us a love bite but I think it would be a pretty nasty one. Onward ever onward and two hours later we arrive at our evenings destination at Fitzroy River. As we actually cross the Fitzroy River we are informed that when in flood the water raging down stream could fill Sydney Harbour in 21 hours. Control burns have been taking place but guess what they have got out of control and flames are raging just across the road and consequently the air is thick with smoke. Dinner is enjoyed in the Maxine room which is a tribute to Charles, William, Dan and Maxine MacDonald and descendants who have owned and occupied Fossil Downs since 1886. Men of the MacDonald family drove a herd of cattle from New South Wales to the Kimberleys. The 4,000 mile journey took 4 years. This is our final night with our two fabulous driver/guides Ryan and Rob. A little skit along the lines of ‘Our Coach Captain’ was performed to the hilarity of everyone Day 11 rolls around, breakfast is served, the vehicles are fuelled and we are on the road again. A circuitous journey is taken through Fitzroy River along the Great Northern Highway and then turning off at the Savannah Way to Derby. Mowanjum Art & Cultural Centre is visited where several engraved boab seedpods were purchased. A very informative DVD on the local indigenous tribes was viewed here. A visit and morning tea at the Boab Prison Tree was made. It is estimated to be 2,000 years old and is massive in size. History says that up to 40 aborigines at a time were imprisoned here.

20 years on, and still at the top of its game Mortgage Choice celebrates its 20th anniversary in great company Mortgage Choice, Australia’s largest independently-operated mortgage broker, has reached many exciting milestones and posted consistently high customer satisfaction results since company founders Rod Higgins and Peter Higgins launched the business in 1992. Recognising that Australia had perhaps the most complex housing market in the world, the brothers set their sights on creating a business to help consumers negotiate the mortgage minefield. Their aim was to build a national network of professional loan advisers who local communities could trust to find them a suitable home loan and who didn’t play favourites among lenders. 20 years on, Mortgage Choice is a strong, market leading home loan specialist, with a loan book of over $45 billion and the support of 380 franchises, 502 loan consultants, 93 corporate staff and 27 of Australia’s top lenders on its panel. The brand is now working towards transitioning itself from a home loan specialist to a full financial services provider. Company Cofounder, Peter Higgins said, “It is such a great accomplishment for the company to have made it to the 20 year mark with so many achievements under its belt. Rod and I are proud of what Mortgage Choice has become during this time, from its humble beginnings as a twoman show, and are excited to be part of its future growth plans.” “We have had a great management team over the years who have helped the brand reach bigger and better milestones. WHY DON’T THEY TEACH US THIS AT SCHOOL? When I meet with people in general most are surprised how easy it is to invest in property and often say “why don’t they teach us this stuff at school?” Why? As you don’t know what you don’t know and what you have not learnt yet. But the fact is most people on a minimal wage and above can afford to invest for their future without affecting their lifestyle today. In many cases it will actually help you pay off your family home sooner and provide additional weekly income whilst providing substantial tax benefits. But what holds people back from taking action to secure their future is fear, risk and the fact they do not have the inner knowledge to be comfortable enough to take action. The fact is they should teach us this stuff at school as most everyday Australian’s can invest in property if they knew how and don’t jump in and make the mistakes others make without being educated they will do very well and be able to secure their financial future. Fear being the main thing that holds people back, but with the education you can have the confidence that you are making astute decisions. Risk being the other major element holding people back, this is something we work very hard on to assure the investment our clients are making are again safe and secure. The key is following tried tested and proven systems. We use our research connections Australia wide to pick the cities which are at the optimum time in the property cycle and have all the key criteria’s met for maximum capital growth. Rental demand is another element that creates fear of risk, ”what happens if I can’t find a tenant?” if you only invest in locations which have a low vacancy rate and there is maximum population growth then you know you will rent your property to quality tenants .

not sure where to start? Choosing the right home loan can be a bit daunting. That’s where we come in. We have access to hundreds of home loan products from our wide panel of lenders. So let’s sit down and compare and contrast them and find the options that suit you. We’ll also help with the paperwork and do all the running around. So talk to us today.

Another point is quality, and this is a major one. “Am I buying a maintenance problem, that will cost me time, stress and money?”, This is why buying new property is the best option for investment, there are many other reasons why new is the best option, but being from a trade background we go to lengths to find the best quality builders to build the properties for our clients. We all need to do something for our future, if you would like to educate yourself please do not hesitate to contact me for a complimentary personal strategy session.

Greendale Merinos entered a ram in the 2011 Bluechip Livestock Sire Evaluation being conducted at the Temora Agricultural Innovation Centre. Ten sires are included in this evaluation and the progeny have recently had their first assessment. The Greendale progeny have performed well with above average greasy fleece weight and clean fleece weight and below

We encourage sheep producers to access trial data and enter the trials to identify opportunities in their own flocks. The introduction of ASBVs by Greendale Merinos is offering another tool to aid in your ram selection and increase the predictability of the performance of your merino flock.

MFS receives Woolworths Fresh Food Future funding boost Bombala-based Monaro Farming Systems is one of 11 farming groups across five states to have received a funding boost as a result of a series of recent grants offered through the Woolworths and Landcare Australia partnership. Monaro Farming Systems will use the $16,038 awarded to fund a project which will build on existing soil nutrient work to give Monaro farmers information that will help them more efficiently manage their fertilizer requirements. As part of the Woolworths Fresh Food Future program, a total of $165,000 was awarded to the eleven successful farming groups or organisations whose projects focus on improving water use efficiency, nutrient management or the carbon footprint of farming. The funding will help improve farm efficiency and reduce input costs resulting in improved sustainability. Pat McEntee, Woolworths General Manager of Fresh Food, believes that the Fresh Food Future program is in an excellent way for Woolworths to continue investing into the Australian

agricultural sector and enable Australian farmers improve their farm efficiency and reduce their input costs. “It’s fantastic to see the range of innovative projects that Woolworths is funding through our Fresh Food Future program. I very much look forward to witnessing the projects’ effects on the sustainability of their respective farming operations, and the wider farming community as research is undertaken and knowledge is shared,” he said. Nancy Spoljaric of Monaro Farming Systems is delighted to have received the Fresh Food Future grant on behalf of the members of the organisation. “This funding is greatly appreciated as it now allows us to build on two year’s work of regular soil testing to build farm nutrient profiles and really target fertiliser investment, thereby increasing the overall efficiency of managing soil fertility systems.” she said. Further information about the Woolworths Fresh Food Future program and other recently funded projects can be found on www. landcareonline.com.au

Monaro Wool Services - Ph: 6452 4494 Monaro Wool Services continues to strive to offer ongoing service and commitment to their wool clients across the Monaro. With burgeoning demand for sheep meats and a solid wool price, the attractive nature of a sheep and wool package is something that is getting the attention of many growers and producers. Mixed joinings to both cross breeds and merinos has seen sheep flocks undergo some changes in their breeding patterns and with a better season and likelihood of more lambs on the ground, Monaro Wool Services are hoping for an increase in production and numbers over the coming year. With the linkages to the Shute Bell wool broking group and service resources that these contacts provide, Monaro Wool Services is looking forward to servicing and trading with their clients over the coming wool season. With wool stores and depots at Cooma, Bombala, Queanbeyan, Bega

1 and Gunning, Monaro Wool Services are well placed to provide service and resources to a wide range of cliental. www.monaropost.com.au Runaway success at Monaro High School On August 29, Monaro High School held an adidas School Fun-Run andraised $2,089.50 in vital extra funding. Students pounded the pavements seeking sponsorship from family, friends and members of the local community in order to raise money for their school. Thanks to their enthusiasm and the support of the local community, extra funds are now available to purchase new resources for the school. Adidas School Fun-Run organiser Philip Ingram is extremely proud of the way the students rallied behind the fundraiser. “It was great to see so many students supporting their school by collecting sponsorship and participating on the day,” Philip said. The adidas School Fun-Run program provides an avenue for schools and community groups to raise extra funding while encouraging students to participate in healthy lifestyle activities. Olympian and adidas School FunRun Ambassador Craig Mottram said, “adidas and myself are thrilled to be uniting with schools right across Australia. Together with participating schools, we hope to inspire a nation to better health and wellbeing”. The program’s major partner CUA is showing further support for schools by donating an extra $50,000 in school grants through the

Wednesday October 31 2012

Community Care program linked with the School Fun-Run. CUA Chief Executive Officer Chris Whitehead said, “Australia’s largest credit union is committed to supporting local communities, and as schools are often the heart of such communities, we are delighted to help by supporting this program.” Last year CUA donated $45,000 in school grants to selected schools through the adidas School Fun-Run. Jeff Emmel, National Executive Director of the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation said that the school based event was an ideal way to promote health messages to the community while raising money for the school and ACHPER was delighted to support it. The important thing is that the event allows schools to be flexible in terms of when and how they become involved. It encourages participation and basically students can run, walk or wheelchair the distance”. Adidas are an official partner of the 2012 London Olympic Games, so the adidas School Fun-Run presents an excellent platform to get students excited and involved about physical activity while they raise extra funding for schools. All schools are invited to participate in the adidas School Fun-Run by visiting www. schoolfunrun.com.au

New look Group 16 Group 16 Rugby League conducted their AGM at Pambula Golf Club on Sunday October 28 where all clubs were in attendance to ensure the game continued to grow from strength to strength. At the 11th hour saw current chairman and newly appointed Deputy Mayor of Bega Valley Shire Council, Russell Fitzpatrick, stand again for the position and was dually elected unopposed. Joining Russell on the Executive was current deputy chairs Dean Lynch (Cooma) and Leigh Hennessey (Eden) with new comers Anne Brown (MRL) as competition secretary and Louise Lynch (Cooma) treasurer, while Craig Schofield (Cooma) and Ray Inskip (referees) round off the management committee for 2013 season. On election Russell informed all that with his new position in the Council that the newly appointed secretary (Anne Brown) will take the control of the day-to-day running of the competition and looks forward to working strongly with Anne as she has great knowledge, a very good skill set for the position and will ensure all

clubs have the communication they require to function from Group to club to players. Eight clubs indicated they would look at fielding 1st Grade teams in the 2013 competition which could see the inclusion of Cobargo to join the already 7 strong team competition. Make-up of the final competition will be determined at the February meeting. Chairing the meeting while nominations and positions were filled was Greater Southern Regional Manager Kevin Felgate who also briefed all in attendance on the state of the NRL trial between Raiders and Storm. “With both clubs currently on annual leave a final decision will be determined in the next week to 10 days. All endeavours will be made to have a game in the area should the Storm be unavailable but this causes a domino effect throughout all trials scheduled for that time of year.” A lot of healthy discussion was followed and the clubs are all upbeat about the 2013 season as they prepare for what shapes as another strong year led by a balanced and committed committee.

Phoenix golf What a wonderful afternoon for golf! The sun was shining, the sky was clear, the birds were chirping and the golfers were enjoying the course, so I am anticipating the weather to be the same this week, so roll up, brush off your golf clubs and enjoy

yourself. They say that golf is the most relaxing of sports. That is after you get over the frustration of that missed putt. Perhaps your playing partner played a lucky shot and beat you on the last hole. Whatever sport is sport no matter what the outcome.

The exercise to the body and brain is what counts, so come out and enjoy yourself. For the next two weeks, non-members can play nine holes for $10, cart and equipment are extra. The clubhouse will be open from 12 noon, tee off until 2.30pm. All welcome.

Robinson wins Subaru High Country Open Cooma Golf report with Garry Atkinson With fantastic weather, large fields and wonderful sponsorship by Subaru, Sportspower and other local businesses the Cooma Open Championship for 2012 was a great two days of high quality golf. Saturday saw the Subaru Open 4BBB Stableford contested. Winning the day in the scratch section were Terry Johnson and Norm Marshall with a 69 off the stick. Runners up were Mark Rainsford and Andrew Barnes with a 73 gross. In the nett event Graeme Russell and Rob Brown teamed up to amass 45 points from Dave Ware and Michael Burns with 43 points. Nearest the pin on the fourth hole was won by Michael Burns, on the ninth Ricky Hanna, on the 11th Terry Johnson and on the 17th Norm Marshall. Second shot on the 18th was John Gargett. Longest drive in A grade was taken out by Phil Patricks, B grade by John Gargett and C grade by Greg Browning. Sunday saw the individual championship played with a field of more than 90 players. The overall winner was Adam Robinson with a fine two under par 70 off the stick. Adam has now got the hat trick - taking out the match play championships, the club

championship and the Subaru Cooma Open. A great return to Cooma golf in anyone’s book. A grade scratch winner was Andrew Jeffrey with a 73 gross. B grade winner was Richard Hanna with a fine 80 gross. C grade was taken out by Luke Abraham with 88 off the stick. The veterans was won by Terry Johnson with a 76 gross and Sam Patricks won the junior open championship with an 87. Handicap winner in A grade was Dave Stewart with a 66 nett (reckon that’s a handicap change Dave) from Graeme Russell with a 69 nett. B grade nett was won by G Nemeth with a 69 nett from C. Cerro with a 72 nett on a countback. C grade net was taken out by M. Burns with a 73 nett from Mark Wiley with a 74 nett on a countback. The veterans was won by Dave Ware with a 68 nett from Gordon Weston and the junior net was won by Luke Day with a 67 nett from Sam Patricks with a 70 nett. Nearest the pin on the fourth hole was R. Hanna, Charlie Beaumont won the ninth. Nearest the pin on the 11th was Christian Stockl and on the 17 Andrew Jeffrey hit it really close. Second shot on the 18th was taken out by S. Seaton. In the longest drive

stakes A grade was won by Adam Robinson, B grade by Nick Massari, C grade Stu Davis. Longest drive in the veterans was won by Mark Rainsford and Sam Patricks won the junior longest drive. On Wednesday’s single stableford Norm Marshall took out A grade, Mal Crockett had (a round of the day) 41 points to win B grade and John Onur won C grade. Ball winners went to 33 points with Campbell Childs just grabbing the last ball. Nearest the pin on the ninth went to Michael Boyce and on the 17th the consistent Heikki Evans fired one in nice and close. Next week we get back to a relatively normal pattern of golf with a single stableford on Wednesday, the Firemans Shield on Saturday (always a great day out) and on Sunday we see round four of the Business House competition with a single stableford also on offer for those not in the business house comp. Junior golf is on Thursday afternoons from 4pm till 6pm and don’t forget the Phoenix social golf afternoon on Friday. With summer now upon us a bucket of sand will certainly help to the fairway cover grass up all those filled in divots. Happy golfing and see you on the course.

Coolamatong golf Michelle wins 2012 Club Medal. Sunday for the ladies was the club medal final, a good round from Michelle White won the day with 72 nett. Runners up were Carolyn O’Byrne, Jan O’Halloran, Carolyn Major and Betty Thompson. Nearest the pin was won by Michelle. Wednesday’s winner was Mary Obermaier ahead of Vickii Roarty,

Donna Tuckwell and Marianne Lapago. Nearest the pin was won by Marianna. Next weekend is the ladies open tournament, Saturday is Canadian foursome and Sunday is single stroke. There was no competition for the men on Sunday due to the Cooma Open Tournament, with only one trophy coming home

to Coolamatong, from Mark Wyllie in C grade. On Wednesday Peter Clarke won the day with 38 points. The runner up was Harry Hovosapian on a count back from Chris Bevan both on 26. Harry took out the Eagles Nest on the 16th hole. Nearest the pin on the third Alan Watson, eighth Tony Kiek and on the 17th Peter McDonald.

Open winner Adam Robinson with captain Graeme Russell, manager of High Country Subaru David Crawford and president Ray Bilbow. Below left, Dave Ware won the veterans, right, Mark Rainsford was runner-up on Saturday.

Bowls triples matches The annual garage sale last Saturday saw an increase in the amount of goods on offer and lots of bargains were snapped up. Whilst a final figure financially is not yet known but is expected to run to four figures. The whole day was on outstanding success for both buyers and sellers. A big thanks to all who gave up their time to assist on the day. This is developing into a popular annual event. Two matches in the club triples on Saturday with some teams far from the original entered. Ken Bowden, Dennis Steinfort and Nelson Wallace trailed Peter Harris, Ron Wainwright and Bob Lahy early in the match but hit the front 12/11 on end 13. From that point on

Nelson’s team outscored Bob’s to eventually win 26/16. In the other match Mike Mannike, Jock Davidson and Wayne Lodge were in trouble after just five ends when Sergio Robcelli, Jason Thompson and Colin Roberson had a lead of 9/0. Colin’s team continued to dominate for the rest of the match and went on to win 28/16. With so many involved in the garage sale there were no social bowlers on Saturday. The remaining first round matches in the club triples were played on Sunday. Peter Marsicano, Terry Croker and Peter Caldwell would have been very pleased with the start they gained over Steve Seears, Steve Lapham and Richard

Nichols to lead 14/1 after only seven ends. Although Richard’s team won 10 of the remaining 17 ends played they were outscored 18 shots to 11 to give Peter’s team a win 32/12. It was a different story in the match between Mario Frezza, Ignazio Mondello and Peter Schroeder against Mick Mayhew, Tony Gray and John Schoon. John’s team had the better of the early ends and were ahead 15/7 after 13 ends and also ahead 17/9 after 17. From that point Peter and Co got their act together and outscored their opponents 13 shots to four to win by one shot on the last end 22/21. Don Jarvis played swinging lead for Max Povey and Mark Buckley against Daphne Buckley

and Neil McGregor. Neil’s team had a handy lead 11/2 after eight ends. Eighteen shots to Mark’s team against two to Neil’s saw Mark ahead 20/14. Neil scored two threes on the last two ends for a 20/20 draw. Don must have been quite impartial. Simon Schoon, Lorraine West and Leonie Snell took no prisoners in their demolition of Allan Crowe, Mary Phillips and Keith Goodwin in winning 31/11. With Monaro clubs challenge on Saturday November 3 and Patrons cup v Bombala on Sunday November 4 there will be no championship matches drawn, however social bowls will be played each day of the coming weekend.

Snowy Mountains 1000 driver proudly said. “It was fun and I’d do it again.” Scott’s time was around the 28-second mark, he was driver number 63. Due to a 35km/h headwind the 19-second barrier was not broken this year, but it was very close with 20.078 clocked as the fastest time by Kevin Westblade in car number 35, a Nissan GTR35. As this was the first time this event has been held at the Snowy Mountains airport a few hiccups were experienced but nothing major and all parties involved would like to see it become an annual event, coming back

next year bigger and better. Improvements for next year would include better sound and commentary, to enable the crowd to be more involved by giving a run down on who is driving the cars etc. This year the spectators were kept at 150m from the track for safety reasons, again as this was the first event of it’s kind here and this was decided between local police, organisers, insurance, council and track inspectors. However, next year they will be endeavouring to get spectators closer to the action.

A brief word from the orgainsers We would like to thank Snowy Mountains Airport Corporation for having us. All sponsors including our naming rights sponsor Shannons Insurance, Racing Ready, Adaptronic, McDonalds Cooma, Toyota Cooma and Federal Tyres. The event could not have been held without their support. We also want to thank St John’s Ambulance and Fire and Rescue NSW for assisting us on the day, they were fantastic. Our volunteers and helpers who were amazing, we could not have have done it without them. The

Jindabyne Bushpigs Rugby Club for catering on the day. Also the Cooma Car Club for letting us use their club house for scrutineering and all the fantastic spectators and their families who came out in the elements to watch the event.

In cold, windy conditions, not unusual for spring on the Monaro the Shannons insurance Snowy Mountains 1000 was run and won on Saturday. The organisers estimate that about 2000 spectators came through the gates during the day to watch the cars sprint up the airstrip.
