Cooma Racing Club President, Mick Schofield encourages everyone to attend this year’s Sundowner Cup on December 7; “Cooma Race Day is always a fantastic day out, catching up with friends, placing bets and dressing up. “The racecourse setting is always a great feature of the day with patrons able to get close to the action as the horses hit the straight home. “All our usual amenities will be available including our bar, barbeque, tote, marquees and the big screen. “I encourage everyone to get into the spirit of the

day and participate in the racing and in the fashions on the field. Please drink responsibly and make use of the transport options available including the train running from Cooma Railway and courtesy bus running from Centennial Park both starting at 10.30am. “I want to sincerely thank our sponsors – without whom holding a race meeting such as this would be very difficult so thanks to them for their continued support of our race club. “I would also like to thank the many volunteers who work hard leading up to the event and also on the

day to make sure the day runs smoothly. “I also thank service clubs who work on the day to provide a fantastic atmosphere, which culminates in a great social event for the local community - including the Cooma Lions Club, the Cooma Fire Brigade, St Pat’s coaching and Cooma Pony Club. “The track is looking great and I’m looking forward to a great day of racing and I hope everyone comes along to Ti Tree Racecourse this Saturday for a terrific day out.

The past 21 years have produced some interesting races days at Ti Tree racecourse. The first Sundowner Cup, contested in 1993, was for amateur riders. By 1994, that had changed, with registered jockeys now legged up on the race hopefuls.

Thanks to Our Major Sponsors High Country Hyundai High Country Hyundai have been sponsoring the major race, the Cooma Cup, for a few years now. They recently took over from Nissan in an attempt to raise local awareness around the range of brands the group have on offer. Hyundai have agreed to be a naming sponsor for the event, with representatives from outside the region attending what Steve Ganitis, part owner of the High Country Automotive Group, has called “The best day out in Cooma.” The major race is such an important event to sponsor because the whole

community gets involved. “We are locally owned and locally operated, it’s good for us to support a local event and give back to the community.” Steve said. “Who doesn’t want to be involved?” Don’t miss the main event on race day, December 7. High Country Hyundai will proudly present the winner of the Cooma Cup with the prestigious prize. Now all you have to do is show up on the day!

71 Massie Street Ph: 6452 1000

Cooma Ex-Services Club The Cooma ExServices Club have been sponsoring the Sundowners Cup racing event for over twenty years. Club secretary manager Kade Morrell has stressed what a great community event the annual races are for our small town. “Country towns don’t get a great deal of exciting events like this, that’s why it’s great to be involved. “The event is very worthwhile sponsoring because of the joy it brings to the community and

also the tourism it brings to our area.” The Sundowner s Cup is the main race on the day and draws a huge crowd, with the support of the ExServices club behind it; it will continue to remain an exciting fixture on the racing program. Make sure you come down and support the races in their 21st year. Don’t miss the action of the Sundowners Cup event.

Fashions on the Field It’s that time of the year again when guys and girls kick off their work boots and ditch their everyday clothes in order to dress to impress for the Sundowners Cup. It’s the time where girls tear apart retail stores for the perfect dress or accessory, put on their fake tans, primp their hair and apply their makeup and the guys? Well the guys just throw on a suit. This year at Cooma’s Ti Tree Racecourse, the stakes have been set high in the Fashions on the Field competitions. With seven categories to be judged, there is a class for all. The categories this year include: Fillies on the Field (18-24 years) Divas on the Field (25-40 years) Diamonds on the Field (over 40 years) Best Dressed Gentleman Best Dressed Couple Most stylish hat The judges will be looking for: overall outfit, headwear, accessories, attention to detail and deportment. One of the judges of this year’s Fashions on the Field and renowned Canberra image consultant, Fiona Keary, says that she is looking for unique styles, interesting colour combinations and a look that is polished. Her advice to those still preparing their looks for the weekend: “You need to own your look. If it doesn’t feel right then it isn’t right for you. Most of all have fun! Fiona has trained as an

Australian Wool & Pastoral Agency Ltd

image consultant in London and now works with the business Style Liberation in Canberra as well as running workshops, presenting trend updates and contributing to HerCanberra. Fiona also works with Birdsnest to provide fashion roadtrips for Canberra ladies who love the Birdsnest experience. Fiona also added: “Monochrome is huge this season but adding a pop of colour to black and white makes it so much more interesting. Other looks that are in this season are: white head to toe - it’s fresh and sophisticated, pretty pastels, brights, in particular hot pink and cobalt, sheer fabrics and prints. This season prints are vibrant and abstract but also subtle and muted. It’s ok to clash, explained Ms Keary. Our regular local judge Margaret Venables says that she will be looking for: “Someone who has dressed stylishly and has gone that little bit extra to get into the spirit of the day. So make sure you head to the racecourse this Saturday for a full day of fashion, friends, bets and some highclass racing.

It’s almost time for the 2013 Races – and we think frocking up is at least half the fun of the event! In our Cooma store and online at www. birdsnest.com.au we’re seeing monochrome and pastel emerge as key looks for the spring carnival and have a few hints for how you can make them work for you. Try out monochrome at this year’s races. This simple style is as easy

as adding a white accessory to a plain black dress. Or, mix it up with a printed monochrome dress and a feature accessory in black or white. Add a bold red lip for a winning style! Pick a pastel dress and add coloured heels for a charming race day style. Pretty prints like florals and geometric shapes make a perfect foundation – add metallic jewellery

for a classically beautiful style. At birdsnest we believe that the right outfit makes you feel confident and beautiful, which are two of the ingredients for a fabulous race day. Come and see us at 232 Sharp Street and let us help you find a beautiful look – or jump online onto our races page and use our body shape, personality and colour filters to find your perfect match!

Looking the part MAINSTREET clothing destination

Racing in 2013 is as much about the fashion as it is about the horses. The biggest question on every man’s lips is what to wear to the Cooma races. The answer: a suit, a shirt, a tie and leather shoes, but it’s the detail that will make it an appropriate outfit that stands out from the crowd. The Suit Does your suit fit? The most important thing is that your suit fits perfectly, there is nothing worse than an ill-fitting suit. In terms of style, slim fitting suits are in fashion but regular fitted suits with one or two-buttons in black, navy or charcoal will look just as good. The Shirt A simple white or black shirt will go well with any tie or bow tie. The biggest fashion statement for men’s race outfits has been the addition of bold colour or patterned shirts with extra detail

around the collars and cuffs. Bright coloured bow ties are also very popular at the moment with plain coloured shirts. If you’re wearing a pinstripe suit, keep the shirt and tie simple so that your outfit doesn’t look messy. As the races are traditionally a formal event, it’s always a good idea to go with French cuffs and nice polished cufflinks. The Shoes The most important rule about shoes is that they match with your belt. Avoid wearing a brown belt and black shoes and vice versa! Remember, no white socks. Still confused? Don’t panic! Mainstreet are here to help with all your race wear needs. Find us online at www. mainstreetclothing.com.au or visit Simon and the team at 98 Sharp Street, Cooma. Happy racing!

Due to a recent fire that destroyed a 125 year old culvert, Cooma Monaro Railway Inc. (CMR) were unable to operate. Donations for repairs were sought and the culvert is now operational on the main line. More support will be needed to ensure that it is able to survive well into the future. After the notification of the damaged culvert was published, many people offered help CMR. This was gratefully received and it has allowed a reactivation of the mainline. With costs to repair the entire culvert approximately $30,000, a large portion of this still needs to be raised. CMR is seeking more financial support in this endeavour. CMR will be re-opening just in time

for the Cooma R a c e Day, shuttles from 11am will be provided from Cooma Railway Station to the Race Course. For the small cost of $5 per ticket you can enjoy a relaxing historic train ride and at the same time you will be assisting CMR to continue to preserve and operate the Railway Line for future generations to enjoy this experience. If you travel with CMR on the Cooma Race Day, your support will help us to continue operating this wonderful community tourist attraction. Your attendance on

The Sundowner Cup may be Cooma’s largest social event, but the importance of remaining safe whilst celebrating, especially as the festive season fast approaches, only continues to become more relevant. Punters are lucky enough to have access to various transportation options on the day, which leaves no excuse to get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol. Our number one safety tip then is to organise a safe journey home. The race committee have once again organised the train to pick up and drop off patrons from the station to the racecourse, there will also be a courtesy bus running from Centennial Park to the racecourse on the day.

The National Guidelines for alcohol consumption also provide some handy hints that will keep you in good health, these include: 1) Drinking no more than four standard drinks on a single occasion 2) Setting limits for yourself and sticking to them. 3) Start with non-alcoholic drinks and then alternate with alcoholic drinks 4) Drink slowly 5) Try drinks with lower alcoholic content 6) Eat before, or while you are drinking 7) If you participate in rounds of drinks, try including some non-alcoholic beverages For more information regarding what is classified as a ‘standard’ drink, here is a guideline:
