Big prizes at Trout Fest The 46th Snowy Mountains Trout Festival will be commencing on Saturday 2 November, kicking off one of the biggest annual angling events the Snowy Monaro region has to offer. Consisting of five days of trout fishing action within the boundaries of the Snowy River Shire, the event is a competitive trout fishing festival, set across five categories, Troll, Bait, Spin, Fly and Junior. Only Brown and Rainbow Trout are accepted at weigh stations and prizes will be awarded for the largest of each species caught in each category. Competition entrants can weigh their catches at any of the weigh stations located across the region. There are a total of seven weigh stations across the region located at Adaminaby Angler, Anglers Reach Lakeside Village, Anglers Reach Caravan Park, Braemar Bay Holiday Park, Buckenderra Holiday Village, Rainbow Pines Caravan Park and Snowy Mountains Sports. Lucky draw prizes will be drawn at the presentation evening. This years major lucky draw prize is a 2019 Quintrex 370 Explorer with a 15hp four stroke Yamaha motor and trailer prize, valued at over $10,000.00. This is proudly supported by Riverina Marine Centre, Wagga Wagga. The second lucky draw prize is a fishing kayak and accessories package valued at $3000 and kindly provided by Compleat Angler Narooma. Third prize is a battery-operated car fridge valued

at $1000 and also kindly provided by Compleat Angler Narooma. Fourth prize is an accommodation package valued at $800 kindly provided by Buckenderra Holiday Village. This year’s category prizes are $500 worth of quality fishing tackle and are awarded for the largest Brown and Rainbow Trout in each category. There are also special prize packs for juniors who weigh in the largest Brown or Rainbow Trout, as well as random cash draws for the club/team category. As if all this wasn’t enough, there will also be $12,000 worth of cash prizes in secret weights which will be handed out over the six days, as well as prizes for the largest Brown and Rainbow Trout at each weigh-in station daily. These prizes are provided with support from leading tackle wholesalers EJ Todd & Son, JM Gillies, Pure Fishing, Rapala and Frogley’s Offshore. Adults can enter one category for $50 and another $40 for each additional category. Children under 16 can enter the junior category at $30 per child. Juniors may fish using any method and are still eligible for lucky attendance draws and secret weight prizes. The Snowy Mountains Trout Festival is one of the regions premier fishing events and with all these prizes on offer, this year’s event is not to be missed. October is Platypus Awareness Month October is hurtling up quickly, and in Bombala it’ll be Platypus Awareness Month! There’s a whole range of fun activities planned, from photography and colouring-in competitions to platypus spotting and a huge Platypus Day on October 12 that will give the community a chance to really celebrate. In the lead up to the event, Bombala’s Platypus Country Visitors Information Centre will be promoting platypus spotting, and asking those taking part to report the times and locations platypus were observed. In Bombala, the playful little creatures are seen on a regular basis, whether from the main bridge, the local caravan park or the most obvious place, the local Platypus Reserve viewing platform. Spotters will be spoilt for choice! Platypus Day itself will offer a fun family day out in Riverside Park, with platypus information talks, a treasure hunt and even a meet and greet with

Paddy the Platypus of the SES on the cards. Setting a great atmosphere for the day, highly acclaimed local band ‘Frock n’ Troll’ will also be providing some brilliant live music. Of course there’ll be all of the refreshments and kids activities that make up a fun community day in Bombala, so it’s hoped that the Riverside Park will be packed with people ready to celebrate the platypus on October 12. Already local businesses are getting in touch to get on board, but Platypus Awareness Month could be even more! If you are interested in hosting a platypus inspired event in Bombala during October, then there’s still time to get involved by calling Sandy at the Bombala Platypus Country Visitors Information Centre on 6458 4622 or email tourism@snowymonaro.nsw.gov.au The more activities for Platypus Awareness Month the better!

Sandy Lewis and fellow staff at Bombala’s Platypus Country Information Centre have been organising Platypus Day in Bombala for October 12, with Platypus Awareness Month almost upon us.

Snowy Hydro turns 70 Seven decades ago, in October 1949, the ceremonial first blast was fired at Adaminaby to mark the commencement of a hydro-electric construction project that would become known as one of the world’s modern engineering marvels. This historic milestone will be recognised with events in Cooma, Khancoban and Talbingo this spring. The events will focus on celebrating the incredible achievements of the construction era and many decades of successful operations. It’s also a great opportunity for Snowy workers from over the decades to reconnect and share stories of their Snowy life and experiences with each other and current Snowy staff. A community celebration and main reunion event will be held on Saturday 19 October 2019 from 11am - 3pm in Cooma and everyone is welcome to attend. The event will be held on the lawns outside the Snowy Hydro head office in Cooma North. The festivities on the lawn will include speeches, live music from local performers, delicious food and more. People can move between the lawns, the Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre and the main office building, which will be open for tours during the event. The Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre will be open throughout the weekend. Visitors will be able to experience our brand new, state-of-the-art immersive theatre and the

proud history, engineering prowess, mateship and vision of the mighty Snowy Scheme. A massive screen measuring 14m wide and 4m high will welcome visitors and take them on a fly-over across the Snowy Mountains, showcasing our past, present and future – a behind-the- scenes tour of one of the greatest civil engineering projects the world has ever seen. A series of ‘Snowy talks’ will be held throughout the day in the main office for the community and ex-workers to hear about how Snowy Hydro is operating in today’s rapidly-changing energy market and the critical role the business will continue to play in underpinning Australia’s renewable energy future. The talks will also cover the company’s future plans with Snowy 2.0, our new major pumped-hydro expansion of the Snowy Scheme. The events in Khancoban and Talbingo will bring the 70th celebrations to these local communities. There will be a rare opportunity to see inside Talbingo’s Tumut 3 Power Station from the viewing gallery and enjoy a barbecue lunch with proceeds to be donated to a local charity. In Khancoban there will be a community picnic at the Lady Hudson Rose Garden. For information and to keep up-todate with activities, please register at snowyhydro.com.au

Visitors to Cooma for the Snowy 70th reunion might also be interested in other events being held on the same weekend. Friday October 18 book launch Cooma Ex-Services Club ”Snowy Kids – memories of growing up in the Snowy Mountains”.; Saturday October 19 Girder Fork Motor Bike rally at Cooma Car Club, Bolaro Street, Cooma. Rally leaves club at 8.30am. Car museum will be open during the day.

Eucumbene Lakeview Cottages opened in August 2019. The 2 bedroom 1 bathroom self contained cottages have panoramic views over Lake Eucumbene and surrounds and are set on a 5 acre rural property. Situated only 5kms from Adaminaby and 2kms from Old Adaminaby. Eucumbene Lakeview Cottages are an ideal accommodation base for trout fishing or water sports on Lake Eucumbene, exploring Kosciuszko National Park, winter

snow sports at Selwyn Snow Resort, bike riding or for visiting the Snowy Hydro Scheme and the Snowy Scheme Museum. Each cottage is named to reflect a local area landmark which have an interesting story to tell. Kyloe Cottage is named after Kyloe copper mine, which was located at the foot of Mount Cobrabald which is directly across Lake Eucumbene. The mine operated until 1913, remnants of

building and the pit still remain. The word “kyloe means cattle in the Scottish Gaelic language. Yens Cottage aspect is towards Yens Bay, a renowned fly fishing spot. The Yens (or Yans) were early store holders during the Kiandra Gold Rush days. In later years the family had land holdings near Yens Bay. The Old Adaminaby pioneer cemetery is also located on the southern edge of Yens Bay.

Bella Bar and Coffee

Charlotte Merrigan is chasing her dream of the gypsy life. Purchasing a cute coffee van earlier this year, Charlotte and her partner Regan Caldwell have started Bella Bar and Coffee. You’ll see them parked in Bredbo, near the Christmas Barn, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and at Rhythm Snowsports on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Charlotte started out as a barista in Melbourne. At her very first café, she got the nickname ‘Bella’ from the Italian owners. When it came to a name for the van, it was the first thing she thought of. Charlotte spent the last two years working at The Courtyard Coffee Shop in Cooma alongside her sister Gab, who runs The Flower Pantry. There she got hooked on Academy Coffee. “I just love that blend, and I’m stuck on it,” says Charlotte. Bella Bar and Coffee also sells delicious homemade treats, like Charlotte’s famous orange and almond cake, pulled pork rolls, vegetable frittata, egg and bacon rolls, soup, croissants, muffins, banana bread and even Charlotte’s mum’s lovely chocolate Swiss roll. The big dream for Charlotte and Regan is to travel around Australia with Bella, but for now they are happy serving delicious food and coffee to winter visitors and locals alike. “I am really loving this,” says Charlotte. “It gives me freedom. I can travel where I want, making great coffee, food and meeting lovely people along the way.” Bella Bar and Coffee is also available for weddings and functions for a fun and hassle-free addition to any event. Check out Bella Bar and Coffee on Instagram and Facebook and stop in to say hi on your next trip to the snow.

New Gondola in winter 2020 Thredbo is proud to announce that a state-of-theart, high speed Gondola will be built during the 2019/20 summer in Thredbo to replace the Merritts double Chairlift. • The new Doppelmayr Merritts Gondola will become Australia’s first purpose-built Gondola • The Merritts Gondola is a high speed, eight person Gondola that will quadruple the capacity of the current Merritts Chairlift, lifting approximately 2,000 people per hour • The new Gondola will transport skiers, snowboarders and sightseers from the village to the intermediate and beginner terrain of the Cruiser area. The Cruiser area also has access to some of the resort’s advanced trails like Dream Run, meaning the Gondola will benefit all levels of skier and snowboarders, as well as sightseers • There’ll be a mid-station close to the base of the High Noon trail, allowing guests to access Friday Flat or alternatively load to get to the Cruiser area or to Thredbo Village • Travel time from the Village to the Cruiser area is approximately six minutes, saving 15 minutes on current times • Construction will commence in October 2019, following the current 2019 winter • Guests to Thredbo in 2019 can sneak a peek inside the new Gondola with a Doppelmayr cabin on display at Friday Flat from mid-August 2019

Other Development News • Snowmaking will be added to the popular ‘Dream Run’ for the 2020 winter, allowing more reliable access to Friday Flat and the mid-station of the Gondola • Planning is well under way for the construction of additional car parking spaces this summer as Thredbo recognises that the increasing popularity of the resort means parking is at a premium during our peak periods • A number of other major development applications have been submitted to the NSW Department of Planning and Environment. These will see substantial investment over the next few years to develop and enhance some of the most popular areas of the resort, including: o the development of a new Friday Flat retail and rental facility; o the redevelopment and expansion of ‘Thredboland’, Thredbo’s children program centre for snow sports; and o additional car parking at Friday Flat. These multi-million dollar developments, when completed, will provide guests with some of the best facilities in the Australian snow industry, further enhancing Thredbo’s award-winning reputation as Australia’s premier snow resort. To view the full development applications please visit the NSW Department of Planning and Environment.

Hogs get ready Motorcyclists are getting their engines ready for the second last Snowy Ride this November. The Steven Walter Children’s Cancer Foundation was founded by the 19-year-old’s family after he lost his eight-year battle against cancer in 2000. The Snowy Ride has been an annual event and has helped the organisation raise more than $9 million for cancer research. The Snowy Ride invites motorcyclists across the country to register and meet in Thredbo on Sunday November 2 at 4pm for a major prize draw. The major prize up for grabs this year is a Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports DCT. If riders obtain stamps from three of the registered checkpoints at Adaminaby, Dalgety, Berridale, Jindabyne, Cooma, Bombala, Charlotte Pass and Thredbo, they are eligible to go into the draw for some minor prizes also. The decision to finish up the Snowy Ride was not an easy one to make. “After much discussion by the SWCCF Board and significant personal deliberations, the decision has been made that the 2020 Snowy Ride will be the 20th and final Snowy Ride and SWCCF’s headquarters in Kirrawee will close in June 2021,” said CEO and co-founder Susan Walter AM. “I know I speak for the Board and SWCCF volunteer family when I say that it has been an honour to be able to fulfil Steve’s final request of raising funds for childhood cancer research “so that no other child has to go through what he went through”. As I reflect on SWCCF’s journey over the past 19 years, I am thrilled to be able to share with you some more news about the sustainable future we are building to ensure our collective contribution to life-saving childhood cancer research continues. “In March this year, a partnership between the NSW and Federal Governments, the University

drink responsibly

of New South Wales, Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation and the Children’s Cancer Institute was announced with funding of $608 million to create the largest childhood cancer research facility in Australia – the Comprehensive Children’s Cancer Centre in Randwick. We are proud to announce that it will be a permanent home to the Steven Walter Laboratory. This will ensure that Steve’s legacy, which you have all played an important role in helping establish over the past 19 years, will live on in future discoveries in the search for a cure. “I look forward to seeing you all at our upcoming events this year. We are also working closely with our sponsors and event partners in planning for the 20th Honda Snowy Ride on 7 November 2020 to ensure that we end on a high note. “On behalf of the SWCCF Board, and perhaps more importantly as Steve’s mum, I express my deepest gratitude for the time and dedication that you have all provided to SWCCF’s mission of 100% survival for all children diagnosed with cancer. Steve would be so honoured and proud of what we have all achieved. Together we have become a formidable force in the fight against childhood cancer.” The Snowy Ride is a great opportunity for motorbike enthusiasts to go for a picturesque ride through the Snowy Mountains and catch up with old friends, all for a great cause. Being the second last Snowy Ride, make sure you don’t miss out on getting involved this year while you have the chance. For more information, visit stevenwalterfoundation.org.au.

All go at Charlotte Pass Charlotte Pass Snow Resort was busy last summer with renovations of the hotel and resort lodges, which included new external cladding of buildings. The resort has also acquired more over snow transport and another snow groomer. The new transport vehicle, a 26 seat Tucker imported from the United States is a welcome addition to the over snow transport at Charlotte Pass, which will mean more day trippers will get there quicker. An additional snow grooming machine, a Pisten Bully 400 Park Pro was acquired for this winter. This completes the modernisation of the fleet of snow groomers, enabling the grooming of more snow terrain. The Kosciuszko Chalet Hotel commenced room upgrades this year in a style that reflects the 80year history of the hotel. The rooms have been fitted with shutters to enhance their

appearance as well as increase their energy efficiency. This season will also see the grand opening of the new Stillwell Hotel and restaurant. The restaurant will be Mexican themed and include a tequila bar, as well as après entertainment on the deck during the winter season. It is also intended that the hotel will be open year-round. The Pulpit T-Bar has been upgraded using the latest technology which is up to 40 per cent more efficient. A new haul rope has been installed on the Guthrie’s highspeed Poma lift. Other improvements have included the cladding of Lucy Lodge and the sewerage treatment works, a new waste transport system that is expected to lower diesel usage. This is a single trailer holding all four types of bins at once, enabling there to be less trips with multiple trailers resulting in a more efficient and

Snow sport legend Paul Reader remembered Australian snow sports legend Paul Reader passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on August 13, in Wollongong, aged 90 years. Reader was an Australian ski champion in the

dedication to the snow sports industry. Reader opened the first ski shop in Australia in 1956, and his son Nic continues the family-run business Paul Reader Snow Sports in York Street, Sydney. Reader also had a ski shop in Flinders Lane, Melbourne in the 1960s. His famous Christiana Ski Lodge at Thredbo was a very popular place, as was his alpine retreat Paul’s Place on the Alpine Way where he built and maintained a small private golf range. A member of the Coolamatong Snowy Mountains Golf Club at Berridale for many years, Reader had a lovely smooth “copybook” swing and was able to give the ball a hell of a whack even at age 85 years. Reader was known as one of life’s true gentlemen, with a great sense of humour. He was an avid reader and had a wonderful collection of books about the early days of skiing in NSW. Reader was born August 1, 1929, in Woollahra in Sydney. His father died when reader was about three years old. Paul Reader established the first ski shop in Australia at Reader was interviewed by Jerry Elizabeth Street Sydney in 1956. Krejza, for the Thredbo Historical Society at Reader’s home in Jindabyne in 2015. 1950s when it comprised three events, downhill, Jerry Krejzar’s interview is quoted in this story ski-jump and cross-country. He was also selected about Paul Reader’s life and legacy to skiing and for the Australian Olympic Ski team. the ski industry. Reader was inducted into the Australian Continued on page 18... Snow sport legend Paul Reader remembered Continued from page 17...

Krejzar: So you had a sporting career in your youth? Reader: As far as sport was concerned, anything I touched I became an A-grader without any problem. My mother’s brother, who decided to live with us, took the place of my father . . . . he introduced me to skiing. He became a well-known author writing on Australia - some of his books on skiing were “On the Roof of Australia” and that sort of thing. Krejzar: Do you remember the time he first took you skiing? Reader: It was in 1946. He went before me but when he came back to Australia he said “Paul you have to take this skiing up. Its just up your alley, you will enjoy yourself.” On that advice, the following year I went up to the Chalet. I stayed in the hotel first, then after the hotel, it was Bett’s Camp where I had my 21st birthday. Krejzar: That must have been 1947 you say? Reader: Yes, to the best of my knowledge. Krejzar: What about the skiing, do you recall the gear? Reader: Absolutely fun times. We had no option but to use the Kandahar toe piece and heel binding. They remained in used until Tyrolia came up with the safety binding, and Marker of course was possibly the first. I know I bought in a pair from Europe before I ever had the shop. I knew a girl over there – I said to her “Get me a pair of these safety bindings.” I had broken my leg the year before and they cost me 36 pounds for the toe piece, which was a lot of money in those days for my work.

Krejza: In terms of skiing, . . before Thredbo started, what other areas did you ski in? Reader: Before Thredbo was established I skied in an area around at the Chalet where they had the State Slalom Championships. We also had them going from Mt Guthega down to the Chalet. Slaloms mainly right in front of the Chalet itself and downhill races were taken from the higher altitudes.

Krejza: How about the races in those days? Reader: These seem to go off without any hitches. Twin Valleys and some other courses - we used to conduct races there. We had to carry all the stuff across from the Chalet on our backs, so it was a fairly hard sort of day. Krejza: That would have been in the early ‘50s? Reader: In the early ‘50s.

Wildlife volunteers, a labour of love

Kelly McMahon has a very busy life but still makes time for wildlife that have been injured or orphaned as result of collisions with motor vehicles on the roads in the region. An experienced and trained wildlife carer, Mrs McMahon always has a number of native animals in her care, in addition to working as a vet nurse with a local vet and the Cooma Pet Shop, running a family household and a farm. Mrs McMahon said she has been caring for native animals for the past 28 years and is a member of the local wildlife group Looking After Our Kosciuszko Orphans (LAOKO.) Snowy Mountains Wildlife Rescue. She is looking after five wombats at the moment. “It is a lot of work, especially when you are feeding

the very small ones every three hours – (seven times a day), but it is worth it to see them grow up healthy and happy and eventually go back into the bush where they belong,” she said. “But it is sad to see them go, and I know I will cry when Zac goes,” she said. Along with Cooma Pet Shop owner, Kylie Clifford, Mrs McMahon also mentors new LAOKO. carers and advises on their care and the correct milk formula for their animals. LAOKO. president, Brendan Diacono said LAOKO. is a small group of dedicated volunteers providing a rescue and rehabilitation service across a large geographical area from Bredbo to Thredbo, an area of about 15,000 square kilometres.

A recent report by the Office of Environment and Heritage - NSW Volunteer Wildlife Rehabilitation Sector Strategy, notes there are about 5,600 volunteers in the wildlife sector in NSW. The report estimates wildlife volunteers spend an average of 898 hours a year, per person, looking after injured or orphaned wildlife, equivalent to $27 m. LAOKO always welcomes people who would like to care for native animals but they need to be a member of the local wildlife group and undertake the required training. To report injured wildlife, call the LAOKO.s emergency help line 64561313 - a 24 hour / 7 days a week service. For more information or to make a donation go to the LAOKO. website: laokosmwr.org.

Cooma’s alive with the sound of music The streets of Cooma are getting ready for the electric atmosphere only the Australian National Busking Championships (ANBC) can create. Local and national talents will bring the town to life with music and other exciting performances. The competition continues to grow year after year, as regional rounds have and will be held in Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales throughout 2019. Cooma’s regional competition and the National Grand Final will be held in the Cooma CBD on Saturday November 16. Founder and organiser of the ANBC, Allan Spencer, says this year will be one of the best yet. “The regional competitions so far this year have been extraordinary,” Allan says. “The Grand Final Concert in Cooma is going to be outstanding. I am really looking forward to it. “I am just blown away by the amazing

talent we see coming through each year. In fact, one busker who was part of the Noosa Busking Championships last year, Tones and I, has just reached

number one on the Aria Charts. “Other previous buskers have also appeared on The Voice and many others have toured around Australia

and beyond, recorded albums and gone on to great success.” Cooma Centennial Park will be abuzz with other activities for children and adults alike. Face painting, jumping castle, fairy floss, slushies and displays from the Cooma Gymnastic Club and the Cooma 1st Scouts will also be happening. And the fun doesn’t stop there. On Sunday, the Cooma Rotary Club will be hosting a Blues and Roots Festival to continue the musical experience, with Canberran orchestra Musica da Camera performing a concert in the afternoon. The Cooma Rotary Markets will also be happening in Centennial Park, with unique homemade items and delicious treats adding to the festive experience. Make sure you come along to Cooma to enjoy a full weekend of free musical entertainment in the beautiful spring sunshine.

SHOWCASING THE BEST OF THE SNOWY MONARO & SNOWY VALLEYS REGIONS

POST

While many tourism regions within Australia continue to chase the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, Elm Cottage, a small luxury boutique farm stay in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains west of Canberra, continues to set new benchmarks within the accommodation sector. To add to Elm Cottage’s already impressive stable of recognition and awards, the business in the last 12 months has gained further recognition in receiving its sixth Trip Advisor award for Excellence and three international awards for Best Luxury Pet Friendly Holiday Accommodation-Riverina, Rural Retreat of the Year 2019 Australia and Most Unique Rural Retreat 2019 Australia. Owners Deborah and David Sheldon have had a vision for Elm Cottage that continues into the future “The Elm Cottage experience is ever evolving. This vision has witnessed the initial development transform from two recycled cottages, River and Blue Gum cottages that today incorporates five luxury cottages in a backdrop that provides its guests with an authentic regional experience that caters for International guests and a wide demographic of domestic visitors. The Sheldon’s from day one included in their initial vision a sustainable environmental plan that includes a native regeneration plan that has seen more than 4000 native trees planted plus the re-establishment of the endangered Tumut Grevillea.

With this care and appreciation for the environment, the native revegetation program has witnessed the return of more than 130 bird species to the property and platypus to the river. The Sheldons are slowly transitioning this luxury Farm Stay to renewable power which currently includes 18.5kwh solar panels and 27kwh battery storage with plans to growth the storage capacity. Just last year in partnership with Tesla they have also added two Tesla car charging stations which further demonstrates Elm Cottage’s commitment to lowering emissions and their concerns for the environment. When asked about the Elm Cottage evolution and their success to date, David said that both he and his wife realised the importance of under promising and over delivering on a visitors expectations and the importance of continued improvements to the facilities at Elm Cottage. ‘If it is to be it is up to me’ is both Deborah and David’s daily credo, perhaps that is why this business continues to be a benchmark within the regional tourism Industry.

Spring in Bombala

As the warmer months approach there is no shortage of events coming up, and on the list for Bombala we have everything from the Bombala Races, to the Delegate Heritage Weekend, the Rotary Markets and the Bombala Bike Show. The Bombala Races are set to offer an exciting day of country racing on October 19, and is one of the biggest social days on the Bombala calendar, so start picking your outfit now! The weather proved a bit of a challenge last year, but a good crowd still made the most of the action on the track, bookmaker facilities, fashions on the field, and the marquee, so we can expect even more fun this year if the sun plays along. The Delegate Heritage Weekend is also set to shine across October 26 and 27, and considering it is only a relatively new event, there’s a huge amount lined up. The heritage games and markets on Saturday morning at the park are a real

family event, with everyone encouraged to have a go in the games of skill, tug o’ war and sprints, some of which boast cash prizes. A game of competition cricket will then keep many spectators happy, or you can head to the Early Settlers Hut for their famous damper and billy tea that afternoon. In a packed program, the Bundian Way Gallery will be hosting an opening with drinks and nibbles from 4pm, and then it's onto the Country Club for tea and family entertainment from local musicians. Sunday everyone is invited to a free breakfast at the Delegate School of Arts followed by a shared heritage walk to the top of the Craigie Range Rd to open the first lookout and information board for the Bundian Way walking track in this area. There will also be a church service in the old Presbyterian Church, after which you can make your way by car if you prefer to the top of Craigie Range.

Concluding the big weekend will be lunch at the School of Arts and the launch of the Bundian Way App. The Bombala Bike Show will once again be a highlight event of the year, with hundreds of visitors roaring into town over the weekend of November 16 to enjoy the usual great line up of live bands, the show n shine, the burn out comp and a whole host of stalls and refreshments. This year there is more of a focus on entertainment for the young and young at heart with various inflatables such as horizontal bungee and jumping castles, while raffle tickets are available now for the incredible 2019 Honda CRF 1000 Africa Twin. Check out the Bombala Motorcycle Association on Facebook for all of the exciting details. Throw in the Anglican Garden Day on November 2, the Bombala Rotary Markets and all they have to offer on November 23, and we’ve got a big couple of months coming up in the Bombala district.

Hume and Hovell provides great walks Different views, different ecosystems, different plant life, different track styles; this was the first-hand experience of walking the Snowy Valleys’ section of the Hume and Hovell Track as featured in the latest edition of the Australian Great Walks magazine. Snowy Valleys Council in partnership with Destination Riverina Murray and Destination NSW arranged for writer Caro Ryan to write an article for the magazine documenting her experiences of walking the track. Phil Stone, Council’s Acting Director of Strategy, Community and Development said Snowy Valleys Council has responsibility for marketing the Hume and Hovell on behalf of the NSW Department of Industry, Crown Lands. “Our tourism team reached out to Destination Riverina Murray for ideas for promotional partnerships and one of those suggested was Great Walks Magazine,” he said. SVC tourism staff dropped Caro and her friend at their start point on a Friday morning and they hiked for three days (two nights camping) from Talbingo to just north of Tumbarumba, where they were collected on Sunday afternoon. As well as collecting material for her article, Ms Ryan also shared photos and thoughts on the spectacular views and her experiences live while walking the trek via her Instagram

account LotsaFreshAir. “This type of promotional partnership offers great exposure for the Hume and Hovell especially targeted at people with a keen interest in trekking and hiking,” Mr Stone said. “Both hikers loved the track, and the region, and would be keen to visit again, which is fantastic. “Exposure via Ms Ryan’s social media platforms also means the stories and experiences reach a large engaged audience quickly and can also be easily shared with Visit-Snowy-Valleys subscribers as well, across our Instagram, facebook and website platforms,” Mr Stone went on to say. The Hume and Hovell article appears in the August/ September edition of Great Walks magazine and Ms Ryan will also be sharing her experience on her blog, LotsaFreshAir.com in the coming months. Published seven times per year, Great Walks is distributed nationally with gear guides, product reviews, advice on the best travel destinations, inspiring real-life accounts from seasoned walkers and practical information on specific walks and their accompanying maps. www. greatwalks.com.au For more on what’s happening in the Snowy Valleys visit the website www.visitsnowyvalleys. com.au and follow along on facebook and Instagram.

Racing season on the Monaro

Racing season is coming up fast and there are plenty of great country race meets to attend across the Snowy Monaro. Getting dressed up, placing some bets and having a few drinks with friends is what country racing is all about. A time to kick up the heels and enjoy a wellearned break from everyday life, particularly in these tough drought conditions, the races are well attended across the region. Bombala Races are the first up on Saturday October 19. The population of Bombala is well-known for community spirit, and they come out in force for the races. If you want a true local experience, get on

down to platypus country and join in the fun with the Bombala mob, who love to have a good time. Next up is Adaminaby Races on Saturday November 23. This is country racing at its best. Many travel from far and wide for the Adaminaby Races to watch the dust fly behind the horses down the open track. There’s a big focus on family at Adaminaby, and kids can even join in with the fun of the Fashions on the Field competition. This year, the theme for the races attire is Feathers, Frills and Finery. After the races are finished, everyone heads down to Adaminaby’s watering holes to continue the fun, bringing this normally quiet little town to life.

Cooma Races are next on Saturday December 7. The largest town in the region, Cooma has a great turn out at the races and everyone dresses to the nines. The main race on the day is the Sundowners Cup, named after the movie The Sundowners, which was filmed in Cooma, Nimmitabel and Adaminaby in 1959. Being the 60th anniversary, the Cooma Races will be an extra special event this year. So if you want to have a true country racing experience, grab your friends and come along to the Snowy Monaro for a great day out at any of the local meets.

Happy to be back on Sundeck Taiwanese Chef and avid snowboarder Yasheng Lo (Shen) has returned to the Australian slopes for the winter season for the first time after having narrowly survived an accident in 2016 that would forever change his life. Shen first came to Australia in 2015 on a one-year working holiday visa and quickly landed himself a job as a kitchenhand at the Sundeck Hotel in Perisher. As an avid snowboarder, Shen jumped at the opportunity to live and work on the mountain. However, on the afternoon of August 28 that year, he was riding in the Leichhardt terrain park when an attempted backflip went terribly wrong, resulting in him landing on his head so hard that he split his helmet and suffered serious injuries to his neck and head, knocking himself unconscious. Ski Patrol responded to a “code red” and when they reached Shen and rushed him to the medical centre, he was still unresponsive. Friends and staff at Sundeck desperately tried to contact Shen’s family in Taiwan as he was emergency airlifted by helicopter to the Canberra hospital. Sundeck owner and manager Cliff Wallis remembered the chaos that ensued. “The next hour or so was complete panic, the medical people were desperately trying to get in touch with his family in Taiwan. We had no details on file and fellow staff could not access his phone or email.” Mr Wallis said. Eventually, Shens family were contacted and immediately rushed to Canberra. After 10 days in a coma at Canberra Hospital, the family made the decision to fly Shen home to Taiwan. His situation seemed dire. Medical experts informed Shen’s family that he may never wake from his coma and that if he did, it was unlikely that he would ever be the same. Still, on October 1, after having spent more than a month in a Coma, Shen regained consciousness in Taiwan, to the delight of his family and friends. Miraculously, the side-effects of his ordeal were minimal, experiencing memory loss that he would gradually regain over time. He also experienced

extreme weakness and temporary paralysis due to having been immobile for a month immediately following injuries to his entire body. “It was such a shock to wake up in Taiwan,” Shen said. “I was confused to see my parents. People told me what happened and I couldn’t believe it. It took me a while to accept it.” Shen spent three months doing intensive physical recovery to regain his strength and is still checking into therapy regularly. Three months after he woke, Shen visited Sydney to visit his friends in Australia and to fill in some of the blanks around his accident. In 2017, Shen returned to Australia again to study at the Cordon Bleu culinary school. He excelled in his

studies and work placement, gaining his credentials as a professional chef. He has since worked in half a dozen different restaurants across the country. Recently, Cliff and Sayaka of Sundeck sponsored Shen for employment in Australia and this season, for the first time since the accident, Shen has returned to Perisher and to Sundeck to work as the Hotel’s new Sous Chef. “It’s very emotional to be back,” Shen said. “It’s hard to explain exactly how it feels. Because I’d forgotten much of what happened, being back is bringing back a lot of memories.” Despite his history there, Shen is glad to be back at Perisher and especially glad to be back amongst his Sundeck Family.

He has picked up the snowboard again, but has taken a more cautious approach to the sport and no longer rides the parks and jumps, much to the relief of his mother. His accident has given Shen a new perspective to life, at once more carefree and more cautious. “It puts into perspective what really matters. I was told that while I was asleep, my mother was crying and wasn’t sleeping and I felt so sorry. I’d never want to put her through that again,” Shen said. In the summer time, Shen will be working at the Tathra Hotel on the South Coast, also owned and run by Cliff and Sayaka. As far as his future plans are concerned, naturally, Shen is simply enjoying living in the moment.

Rich history preserved

The Snowy Monaro is a region rich with history; consider for example the Men from Snowy River March recruiting for WWI, or the birth of the incredible Snowy Mountains Scheme. But if you wish to look back further, a visit to the Early Settlers Hut of Delegate is a must. The hut is situated one kilometre south-west of the township of Delegate on the Bonang Highway and is not only of unique local significance, but has associations going back to the earliest

establishment of European settlement in the colony. In fact, it is widely believed to be the first dwelling on the Monaro, and as such is a fascinating site to visit. “The hut attracts a lot of visitors, and we have a visitor’s book that goes back to when it was first opened in 1988 as a Bicentenary Project, says Robin Guthrie, who has been on the Council 355 Committee running the Settlers Hut since its inception. “The visitor’s book shows that we

have had people from right across the world visit the Early Settlers Hut, and we often do big bus tours, complete with traditional damper and billy tea. The building is of the type erected by squatters in the mid-1840s when they were first given some form of permanent occupancy, and this hut undoubtedly dates from that period. The original owner of the hut was one Mr Robert Campbell, but historical information points to the building being used as a manager's residence, the first

manager being Mr Donald Ross. Since being gifted to the community by current Delegate Station owners, the Jeffreys family, the hut has been restored using timbers obtained locally and worked with tools such as adzes and broad axes by craftsmen practising skills of a bygone era. When first constructed, the hut was not as large as it is today, so would actually be considered very spacious by the settlers’ standards. It is known that at some point

at Delegate settlers hut the hut became the kitchen to the manager’s quarters, with the kitchen often being kept separate to the residence in case of fire. “Ironically the manager’s quarters burnt down, and the hut, serving as the kitchen, remains today,” Mrs Guthrie explains. The interior of the hut gives a glimpse into the lives of early settlers, featuring the all important fireplace, as well as a series of old furniture, tools and household items.

Wallpaper in what is known as the Maid’s Room can be dated back to 1900 thanks to the old newspapers that were laid beneath it. There is also historical information on display for the interest of visitors and to give significance to the features the building. These were lapped up by the crowd that gathered in 2018 to celebrate the 30th year of the opening of the Settlers Hut, which is now such a popular attraction.

Old time music, poetry recitals, and of course fireplace cooking added to the nostalgia of the anniversary, which saw the Committee and some of its guests dressing in period costume. An echo of this event will take place again on October 26 this year, when Delegate holds its second Heritage Weekend, with all encouraged to mark the date in their calendars to visit the Early Settlers Hut. Of course there’s no need to wait that long – the hut is open every day and is a

must see for those interested not only in local history, but the history of our nation. “If the Committee is given enough notice we can happily organise the damper and billy tea welcome that the Early Settlers Hut has become famous for,” Mrs Guthrie said.

Ride like the pros

Registrations for L'Étape Australia 2019 will close on October 31, so make sure you get in quick. The huge cycling event is in its fourth year and provides amateur cyclists with the chance to experience conditions similar to the Tour de France. The event attracts thousands of cyclists who get to ride along closed sealed roads in the stunning scenery of the Snowy Mountains. The local towns get into the spirit by decorating the streets and lining up with cow bells and signs cheering the riders on. This creates an amazing atmosphere for the event, and keeps riders coming back for more each year. There are two route options for the cyclists in L'Étape Australia. The Race takes riders from Jindabyne to Rocky Plains, Berridale, the King of the Mountain sections at Col de Beloka and Col de Kosciuszko and then descends back to Jindabyne. The Race route is 170km long with a 3000m height gain. In 2018, the fastest time for the Race was 4h:48m:45. The Ride will follow the same route as the Race but will return to Jindabyne after Col de Beloka to finish at the L'Étape Australia village, which is located on the banks of Lake Jindabyne. The Ride is 108km with a 1600m height gain. The 2018 fastest time for the Ride was 3h:13m:17. This year Matt Keenan, Tour de France commentator, will call riders as they cross the finish line. There are also clinics held on Friday November 29 with Australian cyclist Amanda Spratt and for the first time, Columbian cyclist Esteban Chaves. So now is the time to sign up for this epic eventand get onto the bike for some early training. For more information about L'Étape Australia, visit letapeaustralia.com.

Revegetation works protect endangered

Guthega Skink

Perisher Resort started the construction of the new Leichardt quad chairlift at the end of winter, 2018 in an area which is home to the endangered Guthega Skink. It was essential the site be rehabilitated and connectivity across the site restored for the species once construction had been completed. The existing Leichhardt T-bar was removed and construction and rehabilitation works were carried out during the summer months. After the construction of the Leichhardt quad chairlift was completed, Perisher Resort undertook an extensive revegetation project to remediate the site. The earthworks under the chairlift required revegetation with native plant species - a native heath.

About 8,000 native heath plants, and many bags of native grass seed were applied on the site over the summer. The replacement of the steep, advancedonly Leichhardt T-bar with the chairlift has opened up the area to children and beginner riders, providing another option to the nearby Happy Valley T-bar. The new Leichhardt quad chairlift has increased lifting capacity by 75 per cent, providing better access to popular runs including The Cleft, Powder Ridge, Snowy Trails and the Leichhardt Terrain Park. In addition to the new Leichhardt quad chairlift, which opening in June, the $4.2 million project also saw the installation of additional snowmaking machines. The Adaminaby Stage Curtain is simultaneously one of the town’s most beautiful and controversial attractions. Gracing the stage of the Adaminaby Town Hall, the Stage Curtain was opened in 2004. The spectacular fabric tells the story of the town of Adaminaby and its history, covering the Snowy Hydro days, the relocation of the town after Lake Eucumbene was dammed and every aspect of what makes the town unique. The design for the curtain was done by artist James Meverley with the shire paying him for the right to base the curtain design on a composite of two of his landscape paintings which are also on display at the Memorial Hall. The project as a whole was coordinated by Anne Kennedy. The curtain took two-and-

a-half years to complete with 85 men and women and 31 school children all contributing towards its production. The ages of those involved ranged from five to 85-years-old and they hailed from at least a dozen different countries. The curtain was made primarily from twill but a great variety of mostly recycled materials were used to get the desired affect and make up certain features such as the kangaroos and the famous Big Trout. Other scenes depicted on the fabric include the town cenotaph, fishermen, mountain bikers, skiers and more. It invites viewers to make close examination of the individual elements that tell the story of Adaminaby.

Central location to explore attractions and surrounds Of course, the Stage Curtain has not been without its share of controversy over the years. In 2010, the curtain was taken down for repairs but was not returned. It turned out that Anne Kennedy had taken the curtain and was claiming legal ownership of it due to the fact that she had paid for the materials used in its creation. The dispute was settled in court where the magistrate Chris Bone found that the Shire Councils purchase of James Meverley’s design gave them ownership of the curtain and ordered that it be returned to the town hall. "There is only one Adaminaby and there is only one curtain which depicts its history and its seasons," the magistrate said. "The curtain is unique and, for the people of Adaminaby, it is priceless." The Adaminaby Stage Curtain is a beautiful piece of local artwork and has a colourful history to match. It is well worth checking out for those visiting the region. Group tours can be organised for a cost of $2 per person. To find out more, contact Bill Fogarty at warrigal@ skymesh.com.au

Michelago Spring Fair

Photo courtesy Hans Saxinger. The small, friendly village of Michelago invites you to attend their Spring Fair. There will be something for everyone on Sunday November 10, including helicopter rides, jumping castles, live music, market stalls and great food. The Spring Fair will be held on the Michelago Oval from 10am to 3pm. Inflatables R Us are a new addition to the fair this year. They will be bringing a horizontal bungee, sumo wrestling suits and jumping castles that the kids will love. Food on the day will include delicious crepes, pizza and of course a good old Australia sausage sizzle by the Michelago Fire Brigade. There will also be a variety of market stalls to browse and some demonstrations to enjoy. The sheep dog trial demonstration is always an entertaining one to watch, where the bond between a farmer and his best mate is clear to see. A water tank cleaning company will be demonstrating their new technology, which will be interesting to see. Live music always adds a great atmosphere to the day, and this year will be no exception with some very talented musicians lined up for your entertainment. The Navy will also be there, with their boat on display, along with the truck from the Michelago Fire Brigade. This is always a highlight for the kids, who love pretending to be sailors and firemen for the day. For more information, check out the Michelago Spring Fair facebook page.

Oldest church Saturday October 19, marks the launch of a fund-raising appeal to assist with repairs and maintenance of the Monaro’s oldest church. The appeal will be the first visit to the Monaro for new Canberra and Goulburn Bishop, Mark Short.

The history of Christ Church, Cooma The decision to build this church was taken in 1845. It was only in 1823, from a site north of Bunyan, that European man first sighted this Cooma area. It lay outside the Limits of Location set by NSW Governor Darling, beyond which the acquisition land occupation was prohibited. Those who settled here did so in defiance of the Government and became known as squatters. Victoria did not become a separate state until 1851 so that, in 1845, it was still part of NSW and the Monaro area was regarded as taking in country extending from Michelago well into what became Victoria. Not surprisingly, it took years for people, to settle here in significant numbers and for decades there was no town of Cooma existing here -rather there existed what we now call a “locality”. A burial ground developed in land on the road which led to Myalla. It is believed that there are a number of graves here for which there are no records or markers. One of the graves that is recorded to be the oldest is that of Johanna O’Rourke from Tipperary Ireland who died aged 21 years in 1842. Another of the early graves is that of Murray Mitchell, the son of the explorer and surveyor, Sir Thomas Mitchell, who died aged 18 years in 1846. In 1843 the Reverend Edward Gifford Pryce was appointed by the Church of England as Missionary Chaplain to Monaro and the South Coast. He was the last of the Missionary Chaplains to be sent from England to Australia

by the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel and after months of homelessness he took up residence at The Grange, a house located close by the burial ground. This house remains and has recently undergone renovation. At that time there was no church on the Monaro. Early in 1845 Bishop William Grant Broughton (the first and only Church of England Bishop of Australia) visited this area and while here, after consultation with Pryce, John Lambie (Commissioner for Crown Lands) and Government Surveyor McCabe, decided to build Christ Church on land adjoining the burial ground. He actually designed it and on February 17 in that year he laid the foundation stone. But financial and labouring problems beset the project and the building was not completed until 1850. The sire of the church was absorbed into what became a cemetery. The cemetery, following Crown Land subdivisions, was sub-divided into sections along denominational lines – Roman Catholic, Church of England, Wesleyan, Presbyterian, Quaker, Jew and ‘other denominations’ in accordance with the practise of the time. Early in the 20th Century the Church of England purchased from the Crown that section of the cemetery on which the church stood. Over the years 1845-1850 the town of Cooma developed quite quickly and even by the time the construction of Christ Church was completed it had become apparent that it had been built in the wrong place and was too small and plans for another Church of England

ANGIE'S BACK!

were under consideration. Services took place at Christ Church in and from January 1850 until 1872 when the building of St Paul’s Church in town was completed and since then it has been used for Church of England services very infrequently – some years not at all. There have been a few periods when the church was used for services by other Christian groups. It has also been used for special services for descendants of the early settlers and pioneers of this district buried in the cemetery, most recently 2011 and from time to time it is visited by groups of people in the course of historic church/ building tours. Following the development of the present cemetery located off Mittagang Road in Cooma, the old cemetery was closed to further burials except for a very few people, having a close ancestor who was a worshipper at the church during the 22 years that it was the sole Church of England church in the district. Records show that the number of people known to have been buried in the cemetery is 243 and of that number all but between 50 and 60 died in the 1800s. In the appendix below is a list of just some of the surnames of the people buried there. With the ravages of time and weather, the church has periodically fallen into disrepair and it underwent renovations in 1926 and again in 1960 and 2001. Now there is an urgent need to replace the leaking roof and repair the flooring damaged by the water leaks and termites. The church now stands as a memorial to the early settlers and pioneers of this area and to Bishop Broughton and

as a marker for the cemetery. It is a lovely building set in a beautiful rural landscape close by Cooma Creek. It has the distinction of being the oldest church on the Monaro and is classified by the National Trust of Australia as a building of interest and architectural merit. Appendix Agnew, Balmain, Barwick, Bastardi, Berkery, Blomfield, Blyton, Bobbine, Bradley, Burke, Collman, Dawson, Devereux, Druitt, Dyball, Ferguson, Flynn, Goodwin, Hain, Hassall, Hawkins, King, Kerwin, Lambie, Litchfield, Lynch, Margochis, Mawson, Mitchell, Montague, Mooney, Norton, O’Rourke, Parker, Reid, Robinson, Rootsey, Ryall, Shanley, Sims, Stewart, Stokes, Sturgeon, Tozer, Wallace, Warne and Williams. To mention just a few. This history compiled by Russell Fox with the assistance of Janet Stalvies – both St Paul’s Cooma, Anglican parishioners – August 2019.

Beaut Bombala markets The picturesque banks of the Bombala River will once again be bustling with happy shoppers and numerous stallholders as the late-spring Bombala Rotary Markets come up on November 23. Rotary moved the popular bi-annual market to the end of November last year, allowing for a wonderful festive theme just in time for the lead up to Christmas, and it’s all happening again in 2019. As a particular highlight, Santa himself will be spending some time at the event this year, and

bookings will be taken for Santa photos via the Bombala Rotary Markets Facebook page. Following another previous success, the market will also boast an exciting food court, allowing visitors to look over all of the food stalls to decide what they’d like to sample from the splendid variety on offer. When it comes to general market stalls, there will also be huge variety, with a large number of stallholders returning and new ones jumping on board to create an exciting day for the community and its visitors.

We’re talking clothing, jewellery, craft, plants, soft furnishings, candles and soaps, bric-a-brac, and just about anything else you can think of – including a jumping castle and face painting for the kids. Charity golf day Thredbo Historical happenings Tim Scanlon, Department of Planning, Industry and Environment Thredbo Alpine Museum is celebrating 30 years since it held Australia’s only Ski World Cup event in 1989; only the 2nd time that a World Cup event had been held in the Southern Hemisphere. The Museum is also celebrating 50 years since the first World Cup win by an Australian; Malcolm Milne’s win at Val d’Isere in France in 1969. The celebrations include new displays, short films, clippings, and of course the fashion of the time. The museum is open 1pm-5pm Tuesday to Sunday during the ski season and January, and weekends and public holidays at other times.

After the success of last year’s inaugural event, the Coolamatong Country Club will once again be teaming up with the Jindabyne Bowling Club to hold their second annual Charity Day on Sunday September 22. The Coolamatong Country club is a picturesque 18-hole course located just outside Ber-ridale. It is maintained to a high standard, even in these times of drought. The club oper-ates on a voluntary basis and members are always eager to support the local community The idea behind the Charity Day is to hold a non-traditional shortened format of golf focused on fun and socializing. Handicaps will be worked out on the day so everyone can play regardless of their skill. “We want to promote the game of golf in a fun capacity and hold an enjoyable social event in support of a good cause,” Club Secretary Manager Arthur Owens said.

Prizes will be awarded for every hole and all funds raised will be used to support the local Lions Clubs of Jindabyne and Berridale in their charitable endeavours. The Charity day is open to the general public and all ages are welcome. Prospective players will need to register with the club and pay a small entry fee to participate. Entry will be $30 for adults, $15 for entrants aged 16-18 and $5 for children under the age of 15. Registration will be at 9:00am at the Coolamatong golf club at 3583 Jindabyne Rd, jjust west of Berridale. “It will be a lot of fun and we really encourage people to come along, have a good time and help support local charities,” Arthur Owens said. To register for the Coolamatong Country Club Charity Day, or to find out more, contact Club Captain John Henderson on 0432431559.

Snowgums under threat in KNP Beetle damaging trees Climate change is implicated in the decline of snow gums in Kosciusko National Park. Substantial dieback of alpine snow gums Eucalyptus niphophila has expanded rapidly in recent years around alpine resorts in Kosciuszko National Park, particularly at altitudes between 1600 and 1800 metres. The majority of the dieback is linked to the native longicorn beetle, also called a “longhorn” beetle -Phorocantha sp. Longicorn beetles prefer to lay their eggs on moisture-stressed trees, and in warmer weather the longicorn beetle can hatch faster and grow faster, completing its life cycle as much as 75 per cent faster. Reduced snowfall, high summer temperatures such as January 2019 where temperatures at Thredbo Top Station were 4.4 degrees Centigrade above average, and a reduction in autumn rainfall mean that snow gums are under much greater moisture stress than in the past. Areas most impacted are near Guthega, which is a west facing slope

highly exposed to westerly winds and the warmer drier afternoon sun. Impacts are also severe around Perisher and parts of Thredbo. The population of weeping snow gum Eucalyptus lacrimans in the Long Plain area also appears to be significantly impacted by the beetle. There are many unknowns about the species and its impacts and interactions, however, with increasing climate change it is expected that the longicorn beetle will continue to increase in numbers and its associated impacts on snow gums will also increase. National Parks and Wildlife Service is working closely with researchers to try to find out more about the species and its impacts on native species.
