Remembering the Thredbo landslide 20 years on

Mark Travers sang a soulful version of Eric Clapton’s “Tears in Heaven accompanied by his acoustic guitar.

Twenty years ago the village of Thredbo was rocked by the landslide that swept away two lodges, killing 18 people. Only ski instructor Stuart Diver survived, trapped under the debris for 65 hours alongside his wife Sally, who was killed in the slide. The landslide seemingly came from nowhere, from a clear blue sky that day, July 30, to a mess of debris on July 31. The Bimbadeen and Carinya Lodges were destroyed as 1,000 tonnes of liquefied earth and debris came down the slope at 11.35pm. By 2:30 am, there were 100 professional services on the scene, and many volunteers such as from the Volunteer Rescue Association (VRA) of New South Wales, the State Emergency Service (SES) of New South Wales and the Australian Red Cross. Inspector Rory O'Driscoll of the NSW Police arrived at 8:15am. At 10am, geophysicists flown in from Sydney declared the site was safe enough to begin an excavation of the

top layers, but was still very unstable with a now exposed underground stream flowing through the debris at the rate of 6,120 litres per hour. The first body was recovered at 4:20pm. The SES rotated 1350 rescue crew with about 250 on the site at any one time. The slope of the hillside, which ranged from 20 to 40 degrees and the sub-zero temperatures made rescue efforts difficult. By midnight, 24 hours after the landslide had occurred, just one body had been discovered. During the night, the temperature at Thredbo dropped to -14 °C. On August 1, one more body was discovered in the early morning, and two more later that day. Rescue workers announced on Friday there was little hope of finding any survivors. They had not completely given up hope, but Assistant Police Commissioner Ken Moroney told reporters; "I think at this stage the chances are quite remote." At 5:37am on August 2,

s t n a i G g n i p e e l The S That Come Awake at Night The largest fleet of snow groomers in Australia, including two brand new machines, work their magic across the mountain each night of the season at Perisher. For season 2017, Perisher has invested in two new Prinoth snow groomers delivered all the way from Italy. This brings the fleet to 20 machines, worked by an expert team of 20 grooming staff from Australia and across the USA. This $750,000 investment in a Prinoth Bison Kat and Prinoth Bison Winch Kat makes for an exciting addition. Bisons are versatile snow grooming machines with capabilities to handle both parks and slopes. Winch groomers are used for steeper slopes. With more than 100 trails across four resort areas, serviced by 47 lifts, the numbers certainly show

why this amount of machine help is needed to get the slopes back to perfection by morning. The grooming process ensures the early starters of fresh corduroy with consistent snow surfaces on the groomed trails. A great combination with the advanced technology of snowmaking to provide access to terrain earlier and for longer. The teams worked hard in June and July to get the mountain open whilst Mother Nature took her time. Perisher Mountain Manager, Andrew Kennedy said; “It is fantastic to be updating the largest snow grooming fleet in Australia. This ensures that Perisher continues to provide the best skiing and snowboarding experiences in the Southern Hemisphere through grooming more terrain across the entire resort.”

You’ve been on how many lifts? Prove it. If you didn’t get a picture of it, it didn’t happen! How many times have we heard this especially when it comes to social media. And we all love stats, especially those that give us a true sense of achievement and help us prove to our mates that we really did beat them on the snow. So much more fun than just tracking calories and how many steps you did today. Thanks to the Perisher Dashboard, you can access pics, stats and more. Want to keep track how many vertical metres you’ve skied or how many days you’ve been riding? Check it out on the Perisher dashboard. Keep a record of how many lift rides, what lifts you’ve been on, what your biggest day on

the hill is so far and which lift you have ridden the most. Track your friends and family (seriously Mum, how long did you stop for coffee with your friends?) and check out where you land on the leaderboard against everyone else in the resort. At last check we were racing ahead at position 310 so there is much work to be done this season. Want to save your memories? – find a friendly on-slope photographer, say cheese, swipe your pass and your photos are on the Perisher dashboard ready for you to share on social media. What a great souvenir of your snow holiday! Photographers can be found in scenic locations around the

mountain. Rather see some action shots? Hit the Jumpcam on Goats Gully and your big air moment will be captured forever from two separate angles. Look up your JumpCam pics on the dashboard, laugh with your mates and while you’re at it, check out how many badges you’ve earnt along the way. Ticked off 100 lift rides? There’s a badge for you. Headed up the Ridge Chair? Then the Ridgy Didge badge is yours. Earn, achieve and keep a record with the Perisher Dashboard. It’s free, available online and is linked to your lift pass all season long.

10 Andrew Kelaher’s colourful artwork is sold through art dealers in Australia and overseas.

Andrew ‘Grassi’ Kelaher

At first glance, he is just another ski resort worker holding a snow shovel. An hour later, we have discovered there is more to Andrew ‘Grassi’ Kelaher than meets the eye.

The recent Lego Friends project was a huge hit with the young girls during the school holidays and provided a colourful focus at Thredbo’s Friday Flat lift zone. Grassi loves working on snow sculpture projects and interacting with the visitor audience at Thredbo. Andrew first saw snow in Guthega, on holidays with his family as a three-year-old. He also skied Blue Cow in his teens, and after leaving school and University, Andrew discovered Perisher. Not happy with a ‘normal’ job or career, a huge snow dump in the mid 90’s lured Andrew to Perisher, where he joined the resort as a Lift Operator. On quiet days Andrew began to express his creativity by shovelling and shaping mounds of snow into sculptures beside the lift, quickly attracting the attention of visitors and the resort management. People were lining up to take photos of his handiwork which caused a distraction, and he was asked to stop. Andrew was later invited by the resort to create a sponsored snow sculpture for Land Rover, in a more appropriate location, which launched his career as a snow sculptor in the Snowy Mountain resorts. When his painting sales took off in the early 2000’s, Grassi focussed on his two-dimensional art for a while, but the lure of ‘playing in the snow’ was too strong, and he returned to Thredbo to get “more ice under the fingernails”. Thredbo offered him a contract to do a sculpture for a Toyota promotion, and he has not had a ‘normal’ job since. Grassi’s work has now become a popular fixture in both major resorts, and is often interactive in some way with visitors. Each sculpture takes two or three days, depending on the design and the weather. The tools in his box are everyday household items, such as a shovel, paint scraper, chisels and a rasp. The attention to detail he takes with the sponsor’s logo is of great importance, but it is equal to creating a sense of fun and ‘wow factor’

for the visitor. He hopes to continue to create snow sculptures if his body will allow. As Grassi worked, school holiday children called out to him from the chairlift above, “That’s so cool… great job”! “The kids love it, when it is finished they get to sit in the sculpture and have their photo taken.” Sand, fibreglass and other mediums are on Grassi’s horizon and he is exploring creative ideas with techniques, alchemy and materials. As a teenager, he and his father built fibreglass dinghies, and went on to sail in State and National titles. He sold these boats to fund his early overseas trips, often heading straight to Disneyland. The big kid in Andrew still loves Disneyland, where the art gallery is a favourite stop. Andrew has painted all his life, selling his first painting at the age of 12 when his mother entered his work in an art competition. He now works mostly in oils and acrylics and sells his art in Sydney, Melbourne and London through art dealers, with more dealers lining up for his artwork. He entered the Archibald Prize twice, with Ray Martin being one of his subjects. His major influences include Dali but mostly Australian artists like Brett Whitely and Arthur Boyd. The name Grassi stems from his childhood nickname of Grasshopper. Examples of Grassi’s surrealistic landscape paintings can be found on his Facebook and Instagram pages and website www.grassi.com.au.

Alan ‘Barney’ Davis – The swiss army knife

11

When work colleagues bestow a nickname upon you, you are stuck with it – as Alan ‘Barney’ Davis found out when he joined Perisher Resort as a Lift Operator in the eighties. Apparently, he looked like Barney Rubble.

Spotted on the cross-country trails getting ready for the Hoppet.

Barney Davis relaxes by the Lake Jindabyne foreshore.

The colourful Pub to Pub Race is an annual cross-country skiing highlight for Barney.

Barney first discovered the magic of snow play on an overnight school excursion to Smiggin Holes from his home town of Wollongong. After starting work as an apprentice chef, his boss brought Barney and a colleague to Perisher in 1976 for a ski weekend. That was the beginning of his long affair with the resort. Barney’s first two seasons as a Perisher Lift Operator in 1980 and 1981 allowed him to improve his skiing and by 1982, he joined the Perisher Ski Patrol as a caddy, or trainee, and in 1983 he joined the Perisher Ski Patrol where he remained for over 19 winters, with four years as Patrol Director. During the summers, there were maintenance jobs to do on the lifts and equipment, including painting everything around the resort such as the lift towers. Barney has been with the ‘paint crew’ for 20 years. When Barney and his wife moved to Jindabyne 22 years ago, his spare time was absorbed by golf, dragon boating, sailing and cycling. His son and daughter were practically raised on the shores of Lake Jindabyne. He has been in the Snow Dragons Dragon Boat Club, since its inception, and helped to create “Flowing’, a Dragon Boat Festival held on Lake Jindabyne every two years. Barney competes in Dragon Boat Championships and Regattas all over Australia as a NSW Representative. He is still the coach and a qualified sweep for the Snow Dragons. When Barney was introduced to sailing by a friend, he took to it like a duck, and was involved with the Lake Jindabyne Sailing Club for many years before kids, and is now sailing again, racing a Hobie 16 with his son. The last five years have seen Barney on a delivery crew sailing a Volvo 70 back from the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. Competing in the Sydney

Barney and his son racing their Hobie 16 catamaran on Lake Jindabyne.

Hobart is on his bucket list, but that would require moving away from Perisher and Jindabyne to train. Tough choice! In winter Barney can be found out on the cross-country trails, training for the Kangaroo Hoppet or the Pub to Pub Race he instigated in the early 80s. The Pub to Pub Race was started from a conversation with a friend and grew from five to over 1200 entrants at the height of the event, but is now a low key ‘fun day’ where Barney is likely to be seen in a lycra costume‌ just for fun! Barney has worked on a huge variety of events such as the Wild World of Sports, Wild Winter Weekend, Dash for Cash, The Footy Show and the Peak Festival over 20 years, having and creating fun. Whether it is hosting celebrities, running out TV cables, transport and logistics or fixing things‌ Barney is the person who is called upon. Currently he works in the race department, looking after the race events held at Perisher Resort. Whatever Barney does, it is always about making people happy and making things happen. “I am a Perisher person, I love the place... and can’t see any reason to leave. I love the lifestyle and when I come home to the Lake, I love to sail, cycle and paddle.â€? “I have no particular highlights of my time in Perisher, I have loved everything I have done here, mixing up my roles and I enjoy helping people.â€? Both Barney and his wife Jo received Community Awards last year for their volunteer activities, including Clean Up Day Australia. Barney is passionate about caring for this beautiful mountain environment. Barney is also affectionately known to his friends as the ‘Swiss Army Knife’ – alluding to his multi-tasking abilities.

Mick ‘Didj’ Hopkins

Mark ‘Locky’ Lockyear Holding a favourite hand-made guitar on the stage of the Man from Snowy River Hotel in Perisher, Locky belts out rock classics with his powerful and slightly raspy vocals. Everyone in the bar knows the words and loudly join in on the tune... and loving it!

Locky on stage at the Man from Snowy River Hotel. Mark ‘Locky’ Lockyear arrived from Brisbane in Jindabyne in 1998 at the age of 22 to work in Perisher Manor as a musician, and has played gigs around Perisher and Jindabyne consistently for 20 years, with 11 full-time winter seasons. He started playing the guitar at 19 and quickly made it his chosen career. After a brief and unrewarding stint in musical theatre and professional acting, Locky quickly turned to playing music gigs. ” I don’t write my own material, I sold my soul to learn a thousand covers,” Locky jokes. “The joy for me is seeing the audience enjoy my repertoire, it has always been about the entertainment,” he says. After the winter season Locky returns to the Gold Coast hinterland, and his regular Brisbane gigs. Parties and events are his favourites, and he will travel wherever the gigs are, including Hamilton Island. Favourite music styles to listen to are punk and ska… favourite bands are Reel Big Fish and Unwritten Law… just don’t ask him to play

“Khe Sahn” or “Nickleback”! “I like to be loud and out there,” Locky grins. With a handicap of 12, golf is a Locky’s preferred hobby when not working, and Natadola Bay in Fiji is his favourite golf course. Recently Locky has toned down his winter gigs in Perisher and Jindabyne and undertook a Bachelor of Arts degree in Media Studies, Communication Studies and Cultural Studies, and a Master’s Degree in Information Studies. His intention is to become a librarian or archivist. Whoah.. that will be a different tune after 22 years in the music industry. Locky has a large following in the Snowy Mountains and beyond, appearing once again at the Banjo Paterson Inn and The Man in Perisher from the 6th to 10th September. Don’t miss the Toga Party on Saturday 9th September! Catch Locky on his Facebook page Mark Lockyear, Instagram @ marklockyear, Twitter @ LockyRox or web site www.lockyear.com.au for more details.

His favourite custom made guitar by Dan Gowen.

The first thing you notice tice about Michael ‘Didj’ Hopkins ense of is his spontaneous sense humour. Waiting for his friend Locky to finish his interview, Didj chipped in with a hilarious exchange, as they have known each other for years and played together in various gigs, with Didj on the digeridoo and Locky on the guitar. Didj learnt to play the didgeridoo as a young boy, on a vacuum cleaner pipe. He became interested in indigenous culture after seeing the iconic movie ‘Storm Boy’. His grandparents bought him a bamboo didgeridoo which he still has today. The next instrument he acquired, was by busking outside an Aboriginal Art Gallery on his lunch break from his sales assistant job at David Jones. The gallery owner gifted it to Didj in payment for entertaining the lunchtime shoppers. Many indigenous players have complimented him on his playing. The first time Didj saw snow was in Whistler, BC in 1992. He worked for one season in a pizza joint where his boss taught him to cook. On his return to Australia he was studying Meteorology at Newcastle University, but abandoned that degree to follow his cousin to Blue Cow. Initially Mick worked in the uniform room, but soon commenced as a snowmaker at Blue Cow in 1995. For the past seven years Mick has been employed full-time at Charlotte’s Pass as a snowmaker and groomer in winter and caretaker in summer. His role is to oversee the operation of the resort, liaising with contractors, mowing the

lawns and doing general maintenance. By winter nights he is preparing the groomed runs for visitors to play on. After 25 years in the Australian Alps, Didj still enjoys the beauty and quiet of his home, creating photographs that reflect its beauty and making music with his collection of didgeridoos and a guitar. Away from the Australian winters, Didj worked on dolphin-watching boats in Port Stephens, and delivered yachts for clients. Didj is a passionate surfer whose favourite break is the Merimbula Bar at the river mouth, but fishing is also high on his list of favourite pastimes. Being an avid nature-lover and wildlife rescue volunteer provides him with plenty of material for exquisite photography subjects. On Didj’s bucket list is a desire to meet both the Dalai Lama and David Attenborough, and to visit Tibet. Charlotte’s Pass may be far away from the coast and his career path of Meteorology, but he is using that knowledge base in a practical application every winter’s night, and in his interaction with the ocean during summer.

Plenty of action to come at Thredbo First Base: A Vintage Après Ski Soiree New for winter 2017, record label Falcona and Canadian Club have teamed up with Thredbo to bring together two of Australia’s hottest DJ’s to create First Base, the best thing that’s happened to the après snow scene since fluorescent one pieces, a fitting tribute to Thredbo’s 60th anniversary. Hugo Gruzman from Flight Facilities and Triple J’s Tom Tilley are the dynamic duo that is First Base and their goal is to keep the good vibes flowing after a big day of skiing and boarding with their nostalgic throwback DJ tunes. First Base is sure to take you back to the early 80’s and set the tone for a great night on the town. Tom and Hugo are bringing along some of their friends to the party, who also happen to be some of Australia’s best artists of the moment. Luke Million is joining in on the fun and are sure to keep the good vibes going into the night. So

make sure to leave some energy for the First Base poolside party after a big day on the slopes, as it will be a highlight of Thredbo’s event calendar this winter. First Base event date: - September 9, Luke Million https://www.thredbo.com.au/events/ GH Mumm Top 2 Bottom - 3.2km of fast paced downhill action 1. August 11-12 The Thredbo G.H. Mumm Race Weekend returns to Thredbo and it promises to be the party of the season with fast paced action both and off the slopes. In the village there is a massive roll call of DJ’s, set to play in mini festival atmosphere at the base of the mountain. Headlining is Sydney’s Jesse Porsches, who after teaming up with some of Australia’s top artists is breaking out solo, so expect a sneak peek of his debut single. Also playing across the weekend is electronica

dance DJ Elizabeth Rose, Moza, Commandeur and KLP. On the mountain – slip into your speed suit and wax up as Saturday sees the iconic Top2 Bottom downhill race, that has over $20,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs. The Top2Bottom sees skiers and snowboarders battle it out for on-snow supremacy as they conquer Australia’s longest, fastest and most iconic downhill snow race. The race starts as the sun peeks over the horizon to allow competitors to use the full width and length of the Supertrail. Riders line up at the top of the 3.2 kilometre course with their skis and boards in hand and run to launch line where they strap and click in for a fast-paced blast to the bottom. This is where the battle begins as riders head to the village below, dropping 600 vertical metres navigating, gates, straights and other racers - it’s adrenalin packed action.

The event draws everyday heroes as well as past and current Olympians including Scott Kneller and Thredbo snow ambassador, Torah Bright, who will both be competing in this year’s race. Top2Bottom features seven categories including pro, women’s, amateur and veterans. The Thredbo Top2Bottom is Australia’s longest, fastest and most iconic downhill snow race. Some race to win, some for the experience and some to tick it off their snow bucket list but the exhilaration and free champagne at the finish make it a must do. Highlights of G.H. Mumm Race Weekend in 2017: • Great line-up of DJ’s • Sunrise Breakfast • Free champagne pop up bar at the race finish • Kareela Hutte Apres Sessions with a DJ on the deck

Ambassador Peter Wachtel OAM

Perisher Ski Patrol Inc. member, Peter Wachtel, was included in the Queen’s Birthday Honours announcement earlier this year, as a recipient of an OAM by His Excellency General, the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd). The medal presentation will occur early in September at NSW Government House. Mr Wachtel’s nomination and award was a result of his continuous community service of over 40 years with Perisher Ski Patrol Inc., a volunteer organisation. Peter has been a member of the Patrol since 1974, contributing approximately four weeks a year, and has also performed the roles of Treasurer, Captain and Equipment Officer. As a National Patroller, with the Australian Ski Patrol Association since 1977, Peter was also a former Finance Committee Member, Examiner, Ski Patroller Training Program and former National First Aid Examiner. From 1986 until 2015, Peter held the position of Treasurer of the New South Wales Ski Patrol Association, Committee member, and Liaison Officer to New South Wales Volunteer Rescue Association. Other volunteer positions for which

Peter has been commended include; Ski Safety Officer, Kosciuszko Alpine Club; Kosciuszko Tour; Boonoona Open and the Snowy Mountains Classic Cross Country Skiing Races. Peter Wachtel OAM is a registered patroller who achieved life membership in 1992, and since 2015, also holds Ambassador status with Perisher Ski Patrol Inc. This is a new category of patroller that has been established in the last two years. The Ski Patrol has trainee, probationary, registered and life member categories. If a registered patroller has served for 25 years, they may apply to become an Ambassador.

Usually Ambassadors have more restricted duties than a registered patroller, for example, not having to take akjas (sleds) down the hill, as it is very physically demanding on the body. Peter’s commitment to Perisher is long-standing. “I started skiing with my parents at Charlotte’s Pass as a six-year old in the early fifties, and was immediately addicted” said Peter. “I have skied at Perisher Valley ever since it was opened.” This year is the Perisher Valley Ski Patrol’s 50th Anniversary, which will be celebrated at a dinner in Darling Harbour on 28th October. Study Alpine now offers a course specific to alpine tourism‌and you can study right here, in the heart of the Snowies. The Diploma of Business specialises in Alpine Tourism and Ski Industry Operations and is Australia’s first and only diploma dedicated to the mountain resorts and alpine region. The course explores topics such as alpine tourism and small business start-ups, mountain resort operations (Australia and overseas), mountain biking industries in our ski resorts and sustainability in alpine regions. Coordinator, Tom Liolios, modelled the idea from the established Ski Resort Operations and Management program developed by Selkirk College in Canada. Tom has spent his career in the ski industry and is currently the Technical Director with Disabled Wintersport Australia. “I felt that the industry was lacking opportunities for career progression,â€? he says. “Especially in Australia, where our season is so short and resort employees have no real security in their jobs.â€? After three years of research, Tom wrote a curriculum around the Diploma of Business TAFE course. The curriculum targets useful skills for building a lasting career in alpine tourism. “This inevitably meant embracing summer tourism activities in our alpine regions, particularly the advent of mountain biking.â€? The Study Alpine program provides students with a broad range of skills in small business start-ups, marketing and market research, communication, basic IT, regional awareness and domestic and international mountain resort infrastructure. The program relies on strong industry engagement and students participate in a range of practical components. “I believe this program can address our retention and career problems in the industry,â€? Tom says. “In addition, the Country Universities Centre (CUC) and other university programs provide credit and pathways for students wanting to study further.â€? Many universities offer business degrees as fully online courses, meaning students can continue their studies in the alpine region and use the CUC Snowy Monaro campus as a study location. Can’t get to the snow? The course can also be taken online via distance, or a combination to suit individual needs. Residency programs for full-season or part-season accommodation are also available in Mt Beauty or Jindabyne. Visit www.studyalpine.com for more information. Course co-ordinator and teacher, Tom Liolios, is more than happy to talk to prospective students, tree-changers, parents or career counsellors. Tom is available via the Course Information Line (03) 5261 4172 or email info@studyalpine.com

More than 150 guests attended the Thredbo Historical Society’s Book Launch and 60th Anniversary Dinner in the Kosciuszko Room on Wednesday July 26. It had sold out weeks earlier, much to the delight of President Alan Fredericks. Mr Fredericks welcomed the guests of honour and acknowledged those present who were in Thredbo 60 years ago, including Frank Prihoda, Australia’s oldest living Olympian – 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy). The Thredbo Historical Society commissioned author Chas Keys to compile a commemorative book for the 60th Anniversary, “Thredbo – Pioneers, Legends, Community” which was officially launched in Thredbo last Wednesday. A complimentary Geoffrey Hughes book, “Starting Thredbo” was also given with every Chas Key book sold, donated by Mr Hughes’ family after his recent death. Jordan Rodgers addressed the attendees, noting that it is also the 30th anniversary of Rydge’s operation in Thredbo. Unfortunately, Alan Rydge, the patron of the Thredbo Historical Museum was an apology on the night. Film-maker Rebel PenfoldRussell presented a short compilation DVD created by Rebel Studios on the people of Thredbo, and brought to bear some more recent history and stories of characters who are still fundamental contributors to Thredbo’s culture. She congratulated Chas Keys for encapsulating all the history and stories of Thredbo and declared, “I now launch this book on an unsuspecting world”, before introducing the author. Mr Keys explained his views on the book. “It is not a history of Thredbo, not a standard history of a place. It is a book about the people who have made the history, and are still making it today. Not just those who initiated the place, but those who have sustained it, have developed it and have evolved in it. There are hundreds of people who have ve been instrumental in Thredbo’s o’s history.” 2017 Faces of Thredbo Awards Now in its fourth year, the e “Faces of Thredbo” Awards are e a perpetual Honour Board to o recognise those who have made e significant contributions to skiing and to the development of Thredbo as an alpine resort. As he stepped up to announce the first recipient, Thredbo Operation’s Manager, Stuart Diver, spoke of the passion he

has for Thredbo, “it is an awesome place to come, it is an awesome community, and what has made it so special is the history and the people. They impart their love of the mountains, their love of the village and the whole community to the visitor.” Rudi Schaetzle, who is now 90 years old, and his wife Chris did not travel to Thredbo for the dinner, but asked their daughter Sonia to accept the award and speak on their behalf. Whilst Cees Koeman read Rudi’s biography, a slide show of Rudi’s achievements along with Cees’s commentary, generated laughter amongst Rudi’s family, friends and colleagues. Mr Koeman highlighted Rudi’s achievements in the community and praised his entrepreneurial and pioneering spirit. In closing, Cees said of his friend, “he was like an Audi – quality and performance”. When Sonia accepted the award on behalf of her father, she said “He would like to thank everyone for the memories and for their support, because without that support. If they didn’t come to Kareela Hut and to the Sunday lunches at the lodge, his pioneering ideas would have failed. When Sonia asked him as a child, what he did for a living “My job is to make happiness for these people… and a little bit of magic” The second award was given to Elyne Mitchell (1913 – 2002), author of the famous “Silver Brumby” series of books. Local resident, Lou Gibson read the biography and invited Elyne’s daughter Honor to accept her mother’s award. “She had many accolades in her life, but this is one she would have been delighted to receive. For Elyne, Thredbo was far more than a ski or holiday resort, it was the source of inspiration, and a beautiful place where like minds and kindred spirits met… and skiing was her escape from the cares of the valleys” Honor concluded.

Peter Cocker

Founders

Acacia Rose

Between the time when Kosciuszko State Park was proclaimed and finally declared as a National Park in 1967, Acacia Rose was born in Cooma and spent her early childhood in a wooden house at Island Bend. Her father, Dr Alec Costin, is a plant ecologist, who came to the Snowy Mountains in 1942 to set up the Cooma office of the NSW Soil Conservation Service. His brief was to maximise the water catchment capacity of the mountains for the Snowy Mountains Scheme. Acacia’s mother was a hardy woman, with six children under three years old, including a set of triplets and a set of twins. Acacia’s connection to the Snowy Mountains is strong and heartfelt. The family moved to Canberra when Alec joined the CSIRO, which ironically was where Peter started working for him in 1952. Acacia finished her schooling in Canberra in the mid 1970’s and enrolled in a Forestry degree at ANU. The highlight of her time at ANU was joining the ANU Mountaineering Club, of which Peter Cocker was President. It wasn’t until many years later that their paths merged again and they are now partners in life and business. It was Acacia’s vision to expand K7 Adventures into more than just a rock-climbing operation, and with Peter and others, they developed the business into a multi-faceted collective of eco-adventure professionals. During the winter, they have five full-time guides and up to 25 Nordic Ski instructors on the books, all of whom are highly qualified in their field of expertise, and fully accredited. The Kosciuszko Cross Country Ski School (popularly known as K7 Ski School) activities include Classic, Skate and Race Clinics, Private and Group tuition, School program and team coaching.

Peter began his mountaineering in the UK and has now clocked up over 50 years of experience as a rock climber and mountaineer around the world. Whilst serving in the Royal Air Force in the late 1950’s, Peter hiked in Scotland, skied in Norway, sea-kayaked in Cyprus, and climbed in Turkey. After leaving the RAF, Peter visited Australia, travelling overland from London through Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan, and stayed with Tenzing Norgay, who climbed Mt Everest with Sir Edmund Hilary in 1953. When Peter arrived in Thredbo in November 1960, he skied from Kareela Hut to Albina, and was immediately enamoured with the Australian Alps. He worked for Thredbo resort for three or four seasons on the chairlifts and then joined the Snowy Mountains Authority in their Communications department. Later as a station clerk for CSIRO Canberra on an experimental sheep station at Ginninderra, he learnt a lot about the pastoral industry in Australia and managed several properties in the Monaro district. During the 1970’s, Peter was the President of ANU Mountaineering Club and was very active in the climbing world. He led the successful 1978 Dunagiri expedition that included Tim McCartney-Snape and Lincoln Hall, who went on to be part of the successful 1984 Australia Expedition to Mt Everest. Tim McCartney-Snape successfully summited with Greg Mortimer forging an audacious new route up the Great Couloir, on the North Side of Everest. Peter then left for Sydney to develop an import and manufacturing business, and after he separated from his wife, returned to live on Lake Jindabyne with his brother. “It’s a lovely place to live‌you have two worlds, a beautiful summer and a fantastic winter worldâ€? Peter said. After working for other adventure operators, Peter formed his company 7 Summits, which catered to Americans wanting to climb Mt Kosciuszko. Twelve years ago, he changed the name to K7 Adventures - Kosciuszko the Seventh Summit! K7 is also spectacular and difficult mountain to climb set in the Karakoram Range in Pakistan.

SNOWY 2.0 On 16 March 2017, Snowy Hydro announced its proposal to carry out a Feasibility Study into the expansion of the pumped hydro-electric storage in the Snowy Mountains Scheme, also known as Snowy 2.0. The Feasibility Study is currently under way and due for completion in December 2017. What is Snowy 2.0? Snowy 2.0 is a pumped hydro project with the potential to provide storage for large scale, reliable renewable energy to Australia at a time when energy security and climate change are at the forefront of public policy. If built, Snowy 2.0 would increase the generation capacity of the iconic Snowy Scheme by up to 50 per cent, making up to

pumped hydro FEASIBILITY STUDY

2000 megawatts available to the National Electricity Market. This energy storage capacity could then be used to ease pressure at times of high demand and provide rapid-response back-up to fill unexpected gaps in electricity supply. This is important as the economy reduces reliance on fossil fuels and increases its use of renewable energy – the security provided by energy storage can protect the community from blackouts and price shocks. How would it work? Pumped hydro involves recycling water between adjacent reservoirs at different elevations. Pumped hydro schemes store energy by pumping water from a lower reservoir into an upper reservoir at times

of low demand. During times of peak demand, the water is released back into the lower reservoir through the turbines to generate electricity. These schemes enable large scale storage of clean, renewable energy in a flexible way. The Project Site The site under consideration for Snowy 2.0 would link the existing Tantangara and Talbingo reservoirs that form part of the Scheme, which has been delivering hydro-electric power and irrigation to Australia for decades. The proposal does not require the construction of any new dams, nor will it affect irrigators and downstream water users. The Feasibility Study Snowy Hydro Limited is carrying out

21

the Snowy 2.0 feasibility study to investigate the potential expansion of pumped hydro-electric storage in the Snowy Mountains Scheme. The Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation (SMEC) Australia has been appointed as the lead consultant engineer for the study. We are proud to be once again partnering with SMEC after our initial work together on the development of the Snowy Scheme in 1949. Once the Feasibility Study is completed in December, Snowy Hydro’s independent Board of Directors will consider its findings.

Different snowfall pattern ‘hard to define’ Recent snowfalls, with more predicted as the Snowpost goes to print, have cheered the spirits of skiers and boarders. The start of our season was a bit disappointing, with limited lifts open. The late snow has seen 100 percent access across all resorts now, but some believe the slow start was indicative of climate change, with a perception that our snow is decreasing each year. Macquarie University climate science lecturer and resident of Jindabyne Stuart Browning says from a scientific perspective, it is hard to identify a trend. “As most who live here will know, the snow seasons in Australia are highly

variable. This makes it difficult to say there is a trend, especially in terms of maximum snow depth and the start of the season. “Vail has recently purchased Perisher and that wouldn’t have happened if there was a real threat to the snow seasons were in danger of disappearing. “Most studies into the Australia snow seasons began in the late 1980s. With a few really good seasons in the early 90s, this has made it seem like a downward trend has occurred.” Some believe a push to focussing on summer tourism aspects of the Snowy Mountains, such as mountain biking and bushwalking is indicative of the

decrease in snowfall over the years. However Mr Browning believes this trend would have happened regardless for the sustainability of the resorts and local businesses. “There has certainly been an increase in summer visitors over the last few years. Sometimes there are up to 3,000 people heading to the summit of Mt Kosciuszko in a single day, you wouldn’t have seen a few years ago.” With the resorts in vesting large amounts of revenue in snowmaking over the last decade or so, Mr Browning says this will climate proof the industry to some degree. “There seem to be many first time

visitors to the snow each year who don’t really realise these are weather dependent resorts. They just expect to see snow when they turn up. Even though we have had a late start to the season this year and only half the runs are open, people still seem to come.” In terms of the future of the snow seasons in Australia, Mr Browning says if carbon emissions are kept under control, the industry will remain sustainable until the end of the century. However if carbon emissions continue to increase, we will see a significant impact within the next 20 years.

A Professional Philosophy

Bernardo Mateus at Alpine Larder, Lake Crackenback Resort. Bernardo Mateus’ love of the hospitality industry brought him to Sydney from Lisbon, Portugal to undertake a Masters Degree in Hotel Management five years ago. Whilst studying at the Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School, Bernardo worked at the Sydney Airport Holiday Inn, primarily in guest services and front office roles. Last year he was offered the opportunity to expand his experience in the food and beverage side of the corporation, which he readily accepted. Once completing his Masters, Bernardo decided that he’d like to broaden his knowledge and experience, moving from a corporate, to the boutique leisure resort environment at Lake Crackenback. Bernardo joined Lake Crackenback Resort in June this year as Alpine Larder’s Restaurant Manager, and has already fallen in love with our alpine

environment, the serenity and the local wildlife. “The beauty of working with the food and beverage department, as opposed to the front desk, is that you get to see the enjoyment in people’s faces as they are having their meal and loving it. You have the chance to manage their experience live, and make it even better said Bernardo. Bernardo is passionate about continuous improvement and works closely with Executive Chef JeanMichel to find ways to surprise and delight the customer. He is eager to learn more about the food side of the business, and is often called upon to taste test new recipes, an opportunity he never passes up. Most of Alpine Larder’s customers are from metropolitan areas, and have high expectations for quality food and beverages, along with excellent service. Children are considered important customers at the Alpine

Larder, as Bernardo states “the child chooses the holiday destination. Keeping children happy and well entertained whilst their parents dine is part of delivering a memorable customer experience. They have developed a child-focused menu in both the Alpine Larder and Cuisine restaurants. Bernardo loves the challenge of catering for events, to make that special day even more enjoyable. They will hold up to 20 weddings per month at the height of the summer season, and he has a great team of positive, capable and willing staff ready to look after the guests. Bernardo’s team comprises around seven in front of house and seven in the kitchen during winter and he enjoys mentoring and building his team to give their best. He is hoping to do a PhD in Hospitality in a few years’ time, as he aspires to teach in the future.

“Hospitality is the industry of caring said Bernardo. “I want to inspire as many people as I can, and pass on some of my passion for hospitality to the younger generation. This industry is not a fill-in career it is a true profession, and is crucial to everyone. People have just a short time away from their jobs and busy lives, it is our responsibility to deliver those special memories. It appears that the Crackenback team has an inspirational leader in Bernardo and will benefit from his dedication to excellence. The coffee is excellent too! Alpine Larder is open daily from 10 am. Lunch is available from 10am to 3pm and dinner from 5pm to 9pm. Our Snowy Scheme through the lens Award-winning documentary landscape and architectural photographer, Chris Round, has exhibited both in Australia and overseas and is now turning his attention to the Snowy Hydro Scheme. “I’ve been interested in the Scheme for a while and it occurred to me that, despite numerous archival/historical exhibitions and much commercial photography, there hasn’t been a cohesive, contemporary photographic document of the Scheme and the area, he says. Chris aims to capture the heart of the Snowy Mountains: the architecture, landscapes, recreational activities, people, towns and other aspects, in one complete series. “The Scheme is such an important part of our history, as is the area in general. With renewable energy discussions and the changing climate, it seems a great time to be creating a story about it, even though I’ll be leaving those politically sensitive themes largely alone. Chris hopes to create a body of work worthy of a significant travelling exhibition in metropolitan and regional galleries, book publication and hopefully inclusion in a national heritage collection in the future.

“Parliament NSW recently acquired one of my images for their permanent collection, so it seems to be heading in the right direction, he says. As well as creating images of the Scheme’s structures and waterways, this is also a project about the region and its people. “As part of my body of work I am taking portraits of people I meet during my visits, Chris says. “Though this is not a historical account, I think it’s vitally important to include portraits of people who were involved in the construction of the Scheme and perhaps their relatives. It would be great to meet up with people and hear about their stories and discuss how they feel about the Scheme, as well as taking their portrait or taking candid photos of them. Perhaps it’s more important than ever to capture their portraits. They would add great depth the series. Chris makes regular trips around the region and will be here again in August to photograph the mountains with a good covering of snow. Anyone interested in being part of the series is urged to contact Chris Round on 0410 663 535, or email roundyc@hotmail.com.

SNOWTUNES FESTIVAL 2017 - SECOND LINE UP REVEALED Snowtunes is Australia’s only 2-day music festival held at the base of the Snowy Mountains and today announces its second line up – adding to the list of huge names set to hit the two stages over the first weekend of September. French DJ and producer, Klingande, who shot to fame with his summer anthem ‘Jubel’ has been announced as special international guest of Snowtunes 2017, marking his only confirmed performance in Australia since late 2015. The feel good tune was a top five hit in more than ten countries worldwide, and is three-time Platinum ARIA certified. Klingande joins the already massive line up that will heat up the snowy town of Jindabyne this year. The hugely anticipated Snowtunes is thrilled to also announce Australian DJ L D R U, the mastermind behind hit song ‘Keeping Score’, New Zealand-born singer songwriter Mitch James and queen of electronic music, Royal as the latest additions to the line up. Running on both Friday, September 1 and Saturday, September 2, Snowtunes is set to feature some of the most in demand artists worldwide including Gang of Youths, Safia, Tigerlily, Mashd N Kutcher, Skeggs, Nina Las Vegas, Prime Circle, DZ Deathrays, Ruby Fields and many more.

The versatility offered with the addition of a new stage means that attendees will be able to rock out at the live music stage, or get their dance on at the electronic stage. Also freshly added to Snowtunes this year is the Bag Jump Adventure Park, a lavish Moet Hennessey VIP bar to add a hint of glamour and uniqueness to the area, as well as an exclusive Chandon bar in GA to allow everyone the chance to make their festival extra bubbly! As part of the “Throwback Thursday” promotion, Snowtunes is today exclusively lunching one-day tickets to Snowtunes for just $69! But get in quick – like everything, this promotion is for a limited allocation only and will sell fast! Snowtunes has this year incorporated payment plans into ticket purchase options, making it easier to secure your ticket to the best weekend of winter. The third and final ticket release is now available via www. snowtunes.com.au.

SKI & BOARD THROUGH KOSCIUSZKO NATIONAL PARKS’

virtual streets

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! It’s a camera-mounted Google Trekker backpack strapped to a park ranger skiing Kosciuszko National Park’s slopes and resorts. For the first-time the Google Street View Trekker has been taken on skis by the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and captured 360 degree views of the high country and ski resorts. Tim Greville is the intrepid NPWS ranger who took the trekker onto the slopes. “The images captured by the trekker are now on Google Street View, so people can literally take a slide on my skis and see the park’s cross country trails from their tablet or mobile device,” said Mr Greville. “These free digital ‘maps’ mean skiers and snowboarders can scope out trails before they come to the park and better plan their trip. “Or for those who have never skied before, Street View from the slopes gives a pretty good sense of what to expect and may whet their appetite for a trip to the snow. “This Street View series is also a great way for people who are mobility impaired to see this

spectacular country in Winter. While nothing compares to seeing the snow fall and breathing the fresh mountain air, these maps open Kosciuszko National Park and its resorts to a whole new audience. Richard Phillips, Sales and Marketing Manager at Perisher said the Google Trekker backpack was attached to a snowmobile and taken across the resort areas of Perisher, Blue Cow, Smiggin Holes and Guthega. “Fantastic images were collected that showcase the huge amount of terrain available for skiers and boarders across the resort. Having this content available online will be a great tool in promoting the whole area,” said Mr Phillips. Stuart Diver, Resort Operations Manager at Thredbo said that it’s exciting to know that now, from all corners of the globe, people can put themselves in the heart of Thredbo. “From anywhere in the world you can take a tour around the resort and experience the Snowy Mountains,” said Mr Diver. The new Google Street View imagery of Kosciuszko National Park can be seen at www. nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/ google-trekker

Snowy River Real Estate Find your space in the Snowy Mountains

Snowy River Real Estate is a family owned, independent, local real estate agency that has been in operation for nearly 20 years. Patrick and Fiona Sacco bought the business seven years ago, after deciding to make a ‘tree change’. Fiona grew up in the Snowy Mountains, but moved away for 15 years to pursue a career in marketing and communications. She lived in London and eventually Sydney, where she met Patrick. They moved to Dubai together and continued their professional lives, but couldn’t ignore the call of the mountains. They returned to the Snowies, where they now live with their fouryear-old daughter. Patrick and Fiona’s first-hand experience in transitioning to the country makes them an ideal choice for anyone interested in their own ‘tree change’.

Matthew Simmons and his wife were looking for just that when they dropped in to Snowy River Real Estate. “I’ve been coming down here twice a year since 1985 to ski and hike,” said Matthew. “Every time I drove through Berridale I thought, ‘that just looks so nice, one day I’ll live there’, and now we do!” Matthew and his wife bought an investment property in the Snowy Mountains before they made the big move out of the Sydney “rat race” to Berridale.

“Patrick was instrumental in helping us in those first few months. He had contacts for trades and everything else we needed – he really helped us out.” When Matthew broke his

leg skiing shortly after moving, Patrick drove him to two appointments in Canberra. “I’ve never met a real estate agent like that; someone who genuinely wants to step in and help you out.” Matthew’s leg has had a full recovery and he now runs an in-home acupuncture business in Berridale. Patrick and Fiona are focussed on the whole region and its growth and opportunity. They have recently welcomed Caitlin Campbell to their team as

property manager. Caitlin and her partner were looking to make the Snowies their home when they called upon Snowy River Real Estate. Not only did they find a home, Caitlin was also offered a job! Snowy River Real Estate has just launched a new, lifestyle centric marketing campaign with the tag “Own your lifestyle”, encouraging people to find their space in the Snowy Mountains. They are known for bringing professionalism to their service and going the extra mile to ensure they match everyone with their perfect home.

KOSCIUSZKO NATIONAL PARK: Australia’s First Ecotourism Certified Destination

One of the most popular tourism destinations in New South Wales, Kosciuszko National Park (KNP) has achieved Australia’s first Ecotourism Destination Certification. Developed and managed by Ecotourism Australia’s ECO Certification program, the new certification recognises best practice in sustainable tourism in protected areas and assures travellers that products are backed by a strong, well-managed commitment to sustainable practices. Sustainable tourism is growing in popularity and in fact, research shows that travellers prefer companies that embed green or eco-friendly practices into their operations – and they’re coming to expect the same from tourism! Kosciuszko National Park is one of the most visited national parks in New South Wales so the certification means visitors can still experience the incredible natural environment, but in a sustainable and eco-friendly way. The Ecotourism Destination Certification shows NPWS’ commitment to ensuring and encouraging local businesses to provide high quality ecotourism experiences contributing to employment for a wide cross-section of the community. NPWS supports and recognises those tourism businesses with Ecotourism Australia’s ECO Certification. If you’re planning a weekend escape, or something a little longer, you’ll find a range of eco-friendly options to choose from at Kosciuszko National Park. No matter what season or where you decide to stay, there are so many ways you can explore Kosciuszko National Park responsibly and sustainably.

Bredbo farms strike black gold ! a Eurek

Truffles are known to the French as “le diamant de la cuisine”, or “the diamond of the kitchen”

The world’s most expensive truffle, a 1.3kg Alba white truffle, was sold for US$417,200 (almost US$321/gram) in 2010. Over the hill, Jeff and Judy Green at ‘Bredbo Oaks’ have just unearthed their first truffle - a 920g monster. “It’s pretty close to the record,” says Jeff. The huge black Périgord truffle isn’t far off the world’s biggest, a 1.5kg truffle found on a farm in the Yarra Valley in 2016. After ten years of hard work, Jeff and Judy have finally been rewarded with a prize valued at $2,500/kg. The Greens retired 15 years ago with no knowledge or desire to farm truffles. They were caravanning around Australia and had settled on the Gold Coast when their son rang. “He asked if we’d thought about a tree change,” says Jeff. “He was

considering buying a farm to grow truffles. I said to Judy, ‘what the hell is a truffle?’” After extensive research, Jeff and Judy decided to take the risk and moved to a farm 6km out of Bredbo. They bought oak tree seedlings from a lab in Tasmania, which had inoculated the roots with the spores of truffles imported from France. For ten years, they worked tirelessly to care for over 400 trees through hot summers and freezing winters, all the while waiting for the first truffle to arrive. Jeff describes the process as similar to waiting for a baby, “but babies don’t take ten years”. Judy says that truffles are much more work. When the sweet smell of truffle was in the air, Barbara and Fahren came over the hill to help find the Green’s first truffle. They hope to find many more as the season continues. Want to experience a truffle hunt for yourself? Macenmist host a range of truffle hunts from June to August, offering tastings, luncheons and cooking classes. They also produce a small range of boutique wine with a cellar door on the way. Visit www. macenmist.com or call (02) 6454 4095 for more information. To get in touch with Jeff and Judy Green, call Bredbo Black Truffles on (02) 6171 0122.

Truffles are rarer than gold. Only 150 tonnes a year are unearthed around the world.

“We weren’t ready!” Barbara says. Most truffle growers wait around ten years for the first truffle to be produced. Since then, truffle production at Macenmist has increased exponentially. Richard claims it is a combination of the climate on the Monaro and a lot of hard work and dedication. “The climate here is similar to the

truffle regions of France and Spain,” he says. The black Périgord truffle needs hot summers and cold winters to activate growth and ripening. But the real secret to growing truffles is to have soil with a low nutrient content. Oak trees and truffles have a symbiotic relationship, where the tree provides the truffle with carbohydrates and the truffle provides the tree with nutrients. If the soil is too rich, the tree has no need for the truffle. This is one case where the barren soils of the Monaro come in handy.

www.monaropost.com.au

“Truffle, Tawdi, truffle! Seek, Fahren, seek!” The two dogs set off on their mission, noses to the ground, weaving through rows of oak trees searching for the treasure. Within seconds, Fahren has stopped at the base of a tree and is eagerly scratching the earth. At Barbara’s command, she stops and sits patiently while she and Tawdi make their way over. Barbara puts on her gloves and scrapes away the dirt with her finger to reveal a golf ball-sized truffle buried amongst the roots. “Good dogs,” she says, lifting the nugget to her nose and inhaling the distinct earthy aroma of ‘black gold’. “That’s a nice little truffle.” Barbara and Richard Hill planted oak trees at their farm ‘Macenmist’, near the village of Bredbo, in 2008. After only two and a half years, they unearthed their first truffle.

UNIQUE BOOTIQUE ANTIQUE - CLASSIC - RETRO

Eclectic pieces for home, garden and wardrobe OPEN MONDAY TO SATURDAY

Next door to Birchwood Café, a colourful shopfront has emerged where the backpacker hostel’s reception area had previously existed. Kerry Townend’s shop was overcrowded at the back of the building with her clothing and massage practice, and the backpacker hostel didn’t need all their frontage – so they swapped.

After a few weeks of renovation, the new shop is light, airy and very colourful. The two massage rooms are still a major part of Kerry’s business and provide a work balance that complements her interest in healing and helping people. The retail area occupies the street frontage with floor to ceiling windows to showcase Mountain Spirit’s colourful product range of clothing, accessories, jewellery, handbags and essential oils. Kerry’s international upbringing, love of travelling and indigenous cultures are all now reflected in the range of retail clothing and accessories in her Jindabyne store. Kerry sources her products from regions like the hill tribes of northern Thailand, where the women, and the village, benefit financially without a middleman. The common theme in Kerry’s range is Fair Trade, ethically sourced and produced goods, and supporting local artisanal crafts.

As Kerry says, “I want people to know the story behind the items, and the people who made them. I am bringing a snippet of their culture back home to share with Jindabyne.” There are one-off designs, particular to certain localities, often using vintage fabrics yet despite the unique nature of the range, Kerry has managed to keep her prices affordable. “There is something here for all ages, tastes and budgets” she states proudly. Kerry has plans to expand into an online shop and wholesale, which will also increase her support for the villagers, and charities like the elephant orphanage they provide for. For massage bookings at Alpine Body Temple phone Kerry on 0418 431 810 (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday). Mountain Spirit is open Monday to Saturday from 10am until 5pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm and is located at 3 Gippsland Street Jindabyne.

Snowshoeing - Leaving a The best way to see the alpine environment is up close and at walking speed, with time to observe and reflect on its beauty. Snowshoeing is growing in popularity around the world, perhaps because it is gentler on the body than skiing, or easier to stop and take photographs, without sliding on skis. It is also ideal for families, introducing children to the delights of a snowy world. In a way, it is just 4WD hiking, enabling you to explore more challenging terrain. Snowshoeing has great fitness benefits, providing a cardio workout whilst building strength, agility, endurance and balance. Most of all… it is social and fun! Peter Cocker, of K7 Adventures guides, strapped snowshoes on three novices for their debut on a bluebird day in the Kosciuszko National Park. His knowledge and experience about the Australian Alps, expertise in mountaineering, and approachable manner made the day informative, fun and safe. The equipment required for a guided day outing is simple - a pair of snowshoes, a pair of ski/walking poles, a backpack with food, water 1 – 2 litres), wet weather jacket, spare dry clothing, gloves, beanie, sunglasses, sunscreen, camera and personal medications. The guide looks after the emergency equipment, maps, GPS PLB’s and First Aid Kit. It is recommended to hydrate before you go, rehydrate regularly and don’t wait until you are thirsty. High energy yet lightweight snacks, like nuts and dried fruit or energy bars are ideal… so is chocolate. You will need the extra energy it is a great workout! Dressing in layers is important to maintain a comfortable core body temperature without heat stress or rapid heat loss. The weather is fast-moving and highly variable, so staying dry and keeping the wind out is essential to being comfortable and avoiding hypothermia. Waterproof and insulated boots, preferably

with a thick non-slip sole, and woolen socks are recommended to keep feet warm and dry. In heavy snow, a pair of gaiters will keep snow out or the top of your boot. Snowshoes are designed to spread the walker’s weight over a larger footprint, preventing them from sinking too deep into the snow, and enabling ‘flotation’ on the snow surface. It is less tiring than hiking with just boots, and a great deal more comfortable. Early snowshoes were made from a light steamed timber frame, laced together with thin leather thongs to form a mesh platform or deck, and a leather binding to hold the snowshoe to the wearer’s boot, with a metal crampon under the foot-bed to spike the ice. Today’s snowshoe is a lightweight, streamlined version with often aluminium or titanium frames, decks made from neoprene, injection-molded toe-pieces, and adjustable bindings. There are many styles of snowshoe available to hire or buy, so it is advisable to get expert advice to match the snow conditions and terrain to your personal circumstances. An all-round quality snowshoe costs between $250 and $400 and to hire from the local equipment store, up to $40 per day for adults and $20 per day for children. Adjustable poles are an optional extra at around $10 per day. Once strapped in, it is very easy to adjust your stride to this oversize footwear by always moving forward, as the bindings are pivoted to allow free heel movement. The walking stance needs to be a little wider to accommodate the snowshoes’ width without knocking them together. Adjustable walking poles really help with balance, and in the event that you fall in deeper snow, they are useful in getting vertical again. It is easy to build up a consistent momentum using poles, utilising the upper body as well as the legs, for a balanced workout. Trail etiquette is very important to

different footprint

understand and respect when out in multiuser areas. Snowshoes and Nordic skiers leave a very different trail in the snow and skiers need to have a smooth track. Peter explains the requirement to step around these trails to the snowshoeing novice, and preserves the integrity of the trail. Snowshoeing in areas where there are trail markers is safer for the novice, until they gain experience and confidence to venture off-piste. When it comes to steeper grades, the metal plate under the toe hold has spikes, like a cramp-on, to prevent slipping backwards on icy or hard-packed snow. Going downhill is a matter of adjusting your speed and foot angle or side-stepping if required. As you stop for a break at any of the panoramic vistas of the Monaro Plains, Lake Jindabyne, and across to the Kosciuszko Main Range, you realise how unique and extensive the Australian Alps are. Large granite boulders and snow gums are the dominant features here, shaped by relentless wind and freezing temperatures. The carpet of alpine heath understory is well covered by snow, but in small pockets against a sheltered north-facing rock, a microclimate allows clumps of strappy green Tasman Flax Lily to survive the harsh winter season. For Sonia and David, who travelled from Adelaide for their first experience of the alpine environment, it was an experience they will treasure. “I would definitely recommend this as an activity for people who don’t want to ski, but still want to immerse themselves in a Snowy Mountains experience. I found it easier to walk on the snow than on the footpaths. It is a great workout” said Sonia. David who is an avid photographer, was in awe of the alpine wilderness. “Walking in deep snow, amongst the twisted trunks of the snow gums, you feel like you are a million miles away from the crowds. It is so

49

quiet, just the sound of wind in the branches, and the song of the crows. It is just magical” K7 Adventures provide highly qualified and experienced guides for full or halfday snowshoeing tours, specialised photography tours at sunrise and sunset, and can customise tours to suit individual or group requirements. L’Étape Australia is back! Your chance to ride through the gorgeous Snowy Mountains scenery with reigning Tour de France champion Chris Froome is here again for 2017. Thousands of riders took part last year and even more are expected to take to the road this year for the cycling event. Registrations are now open, so what are you waiting for? The closest thing to experiencing Le Tour de France itself here in Australia, L’Étape is not to be missed by any cycling enthusiast. Of the riders in the inaugural event in 2016, 96% said the event was good or very good and 95% said they would recommend the event to their family and friends. The course is described by Tour de France Director General Christian Prudhomme as “providing a very similar experience for riders to a mountainous stage of the Tour de France; traversing through a multitude of stunning landscapes and topographies and truly challenging climbs.â€? ‘The Race’ course is 157km with an estimated completion time of between four and seven hours. The Race delivers a route that is as tough as a mountainous stage of the Tour de France, under full Tour de France Professional conditions and runs on fully closed roads. The highest point is 1,725m on Col de Kosciuszko. ‘The Ride’ is 126km and has an estimated completion time of three to six hours. The Ride is for those who wish to immerse themselves in the atmosphere and experience of L’Étape without the added pressure of the final Col de Kosciuszko climb. At 126km and a peak of 1,300m The Ride is still a significant challenge The start for both The Race and The Ride will be at the Bullocks Flat ski tube terminal in Crackenback. Participants for both routes will head off through Jindabyne, towards Rocky Plains Road before turning towards Berridale for the sprint section down the main street of the town. The riders will then continue to Dalgety before reaching the difficult Col de Beloka climb. The Ride will then return to finish in Jindabyne while The Race participants will continue past Jindabyne

Saturday December 2, put it in your calendar

up punishing Col de Kosciuszko to reach the finish at Perisher. Individual participants in The Race at L’Étape Australia will be provided the unique opportunity of competing for the authentic Tour de France jerseys. The yellow jersey will be presented to the first male and female individual to cross the finish line of The Race. The green jersey will be awarded to the male and female individual Race winners of the sprint section, set in the heart of Berridale. The polka-dot jersey will be presented to the individual male and female Race winners of the King of the Mountain, timed across on both the Col de Beloka and Col de Kosciuszko climbs. The white jersey will be presented to the first male and female individual to cross the finish line of The Race aged 25 years or less on the day of the event. The local communities have truly embraced the Tour de France coming to the Snowy Mountains. The entire route is decorated with cycling paraphernalia, some exquisite works of art. The towns and villages have adopted the colours of the Tour de France: yellow (Jindabyne), green (Berridale) and polka dot (Dalgety). Last year thousands of locals lined the route with their cow bells, flags and encouragement; creating a wonderful ambience throughout the day. The atmosphere of the event is electric and very positive, with riders supporting one another throughout the day and spectators yelling encouragement from the sidelines. Chris Froome will provide some clinics on Friday and then ride from the back of the pack to the front on Saturday. While many have watched Chris Froome from the sidelines or on TV, few have had the opportunity to ride with him. The legendary voice of cycling Phil Liggett will be calling in the riders at the Finish of the Race in Perisher, and Matt Keenan will be calling in the riders at the Finish of the Ride in Jindabyne.

Tumut River Brewing Co:

promoting the region one six-pack at a time

Tumut River Brewing Co started out as two mates making homebrew in a shed, dreaming of bigger things. Four-and-a-half years later, Tim Martin and Simon Rossato are now seeing their fantasy become a reality after opening Tumut’s first microbrewery. Tim knew the area needed something to boost tourism, the question was what? After visiting a craft beer brewery, he was inspired and knew what he needed to do. “Tumut has five pubs and two clubs. If you can’t sell alcohol here, you can’t do anything!” Tim says. Simon was already a casual homebrewer and offered Tim equipment and knowledge to get him started. Before long, the two mates were spending countless hours in the shed bottling hundreds of litres of beer. “I made my first batch of beer and fell in love with it,” Tim says. “By the end, I had seven homebrew systems going at once; all I wanted to do was taste the next beer. I had 1000L of beer in my shed when I moved house!”

Tim Martin and Simon Rossato The beers were smooth, but the road to opening a microbrewery was rough. Complications, disappointment and stress littered their path, but the boys never stopped brewing. Private share offerings got

them off the ground and they haven’t looked back. Five years on, the brewery is up and running, with a restaurant and bar not far behind. Tumut River Brewing Co produces 30 varieties of beer, with 15 favourites bottled and sold in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Wagga and Albury. They are launching a web store in the next few weeks, which will offer a subscription service – one new beer every month, plus your favourites – for a very competitive price. Tim and Simon have stuck to their original intention of promoting tourism in the Tumut region. “When it came to six-pack design, rather than push our product, we decided to promote the region and reasons to visit.” Their six-packs feature photographs taken around the region, including Elm Drive in Tumut, Coolamine Homestead and Blue Waterholes at Kosciuszko National Park, Yarrangobilly Caves and activities such as kayaking on the Goobarrangandra River and camping. “Why not promote the region on the six packs themselves, so when people are walking through a bottle shop they see the beautiful places they can visit,” Tim says. “We live in one of the most beautiful places in the country and that’s fantastic for getting peoples attention. Every photo has a description so people can go home and learn more about the region.” Tumut River Brewing Co can be found at 26 Adelong Rd, Tumut. Tim and Simon plan to open the bar and restaurant in mid-September. Visit http://www.trbc. com.au/ for more information and to contact the brewery.

The Skitube July 26 marked the 30th anniversary of the first trip in the Perisher Skitube. The Skitube revolutionised travel to Perisher in the 1980s and from conception to the frist train, took more than a decade – most of which was spent gaining approval and support for the idea.

Skitube is now a convenient and innovative train ride travelling from Bullocks Flat through Ramshead range, into the Kosciuszko National Park and onto Perisher Valley and Blue Cow Mountain. The distance is 8.5 kilometres, 6.3 kilometres is underground making it one of the longest underground train tunnels in Australia and travelling as deep as 550 metres underground. It takes 10 minutes from Bullocks Flat to Perisher and seven minutes to Blue Cow. Bullocks Flat is 20 kilometres from Jindabyne on the Alpine Way and is below the snow line, which makes Skitube a safe

alternative to driving on snow covered roads. Background In the 1980s development of the Thredbo and Perisher Valley skifields was increasing, but the mountain road providing access to them was limited, and road and carparking expansion works were financially and environmentally unacceptable. In 1980 the National Parks & Wildlife Service proposed the establishment of a day visitors resort at Blue Cow Mountain, which would increase the traffic demands. A number of transport modes were examined, including a funicular railway, chairlift, and an aerial gondola, but all were of limited capacity, affected by weather, and would scar the mountainsides. A rack and pinion railway was found to be the best option, running mostly underground. The Perisher Skitube Joint Venture was established, with Transfield and Kumagai Gumi each holding a 49% share. Continued from P 52 The main proponent of the scheme, Canberra engineer Ken Bilston, held the remaining 2% share and was technical manager for the project. Feasibility studies commenced in 1982 for a double track railway on the assumption that the road would close in winter, but this was altered to a single track line with passing loops when the closure was ruled out. Construction commenced in October 1984, with tunnelling beginning in June 1985. The 3.3km Bilson Tunnel was constructed using a 5.5-metre (18 ft) tunnel boring machine, while the 2.6 kilometre Blue Cow tunnel was constructed using the traditional "drill and blast" method. A consortium of Swiss and Australian companies provided the rolling stock, overhead wiring, sub-stations, communications and signalling. The 5.9 kilometre line opened from Bullocks Flat to Perisher on 26 July 1987 with the entire line opened through to Blue Cow on 31 March 1988. In October 2016, Stadler Rail commenced an upgrade of the line. The Swiss designed railway provides easy access between the Alpine Way at Bullocks Flat and the Perisher Blue ski resort sites of Perisher Valley and Blue Cow Mountain. The Skitube passes through two tunnels and has three stations, two of which are underground. The terminal at Bullocks Flat has parking facilities for 3,500 cars and 250 coaches, as well as passenger, administrative and control facilities. The line begins at an altitude of 1,125 metres and runs above ground for 2.6 kilometres, crossing a three span 150 metre long steel truss bridge. A passing loop is located before entering the tunnel, which climbs on a 12.5% gradient to the Perisher Valley terminal. A provision for a second 300 metre long passing loop has been made inside the tunnel. To Blue Cow the line first drops downgrade, then climbs 1.3 kilometres on a 3% gradient, then climbs at 12.5% to the terminus. The railway reaches a maximum altitude of 1,905 metres above sea level at Mount Blue Cow station. An off-peak schedule is run in early to late June

and mid to late September, either side e of the peak July–September ski season. Trains ins run between 05:00 and 01:00, allowing for aprèsski activities or night skiing. The Bullocks cks Flat terminus has a large, three-sided station on with extensive parking, a pass office, a ski and snowboard school, information desk, kiosk, souvenir shop, and ski and snowboard rd hire shop. The brains behind the Skitube The brains behind the Skitube, Ken Bilston, on, said the project probably would not happen today. oday y. “It took seven years just to get to the approval pproval stage. Like most things in modern Australia, alia, getting to where you can actually start the project is the hard part” “But it was an mazing set of coincidences es – things lined up. The right people were in the right place at the right time.” Mr Bilston, who was an employee of Snowy owy Mountains Engineering Corporation (SMEC) C) at the time had the vision of improved transport rt to Perisher Valley. He approached the regional manager of the National parks and Wildlife Service, Bruce Lever, who was enthusiastic about the project. “Bruce saw the potential from the start” Mr Bilston said. Mr Bilston requested exclusive rights to the project from NPWS and, contrary to usual government practise, he received them. “I met with Bruce in Queanbeyan on Friday. He rang me at lunchtime on Monday and had a an agreement, signed by the minister, granting me those rights”, Mr Bilston said. But there was opposition to the project. Kerry Packer, who owned Perisher at that time, did not believe in it and the NSW Ski Association, who had plans for a new ski development themselves, also opposed the project. “A lot of time was wasted fighting those battles” Mr Bilston said. However, he prevailed and due to those fortunate coincidences, the stars aligned and planning began. The Skitube was the first rack rail to be built anywhere in the world since 1937.

Charlie Salvestro, Snowy Mountains Scheme worker – Cooma.

Ten years. ° Minus 15 C. Slept in a canvas tent. That’s 110% Australian. The Snowy Mountains Scheme was hailed as a Civil Engineering Wonder of the World. It achieved that title thanks to the grit of people like Charlie Salvestro, just 16 when he took the bus from Cooma to Guthega to ask for a job. Over ten years he worked in often freezing temperatures and many miles from the nearest beer. Red Energy is an all-Australian company owned by Snowy Hydro so, like Charlie, giving 110% is in our blood. That’s why we think the people of the Snowy Region deserve fair prices, genuine discounts and local award winning customer service.
