Daily Commute for Snow Staff Icy conditions ruined the day for this commuter, who approached the corner above Bimblegumbie too fast. It is a notorious corner for ice.
For those who have left the city for a season in the snow, the daily commute from their accommodation in Jindabyne can be a challenge, with unfamiliar weather and driving conditions. Perisher Resort workers are required to drive to Bullocks Flat and catch the Ski Tube to the resort. As most Perisher staff live in Jindabyne or at the Station Resort, this does not mean they avoid icy roads, they just have less than Thredbo workers to contend with. Black ice is hard to see, but usually found in shady spots where melting and refreezing has occurred. Get to know where these blackspots are, and approach with caution. The other hazard that causes many people grief is the presence of wildlife on the roads, and their often unpredictable behaviour. One thing that is guaranteed, when you hit a roo, emu, deer or wombat, you will cause damage to your vehicle and often death to the animal. Wildlife tend to cross in the same spot, so get to know where wildlife corridors are located on your homeward route. If you hit an animal and it is still alive, call LAOKO on 02 6456 1313. If the animal is deceased,
remove it from the road if possible using protective gloves. If it looks to be a female with joey, take a photo, call the Wildlife Rescue and note the location with GPS if possible. Make sure you stop your vehicle in a safe place, and not where you are likely to cause another accident. There are several chain bays on the route to Bullocks Flat and Thredbo where you can stop and fix snow chains. If the attendants are present, it is mandatory to fix chains unless you are driving a 4WD or AWD. Be aware that this is a roadside workplace for the attendants, so please slow down to 40km as signposted. It is useful to have practised putting chains on before you are running late and fumbling in often pre-dawn, dark icy conditions. Carrying a camping head torch in your vehicle helps – for many low light situations. When the snow is falling, graders are driving and scraping the road to clear the snow and ice, so be aware that there may be a pile of snow coming toward your driver’s side wheel, so slow down. In fact, every potential hazard can be avoided or mitigated by slowing down. Leave 10 minutes earlier when weather conditions require a cautious approach. Most of the road is gazetted at 80km per
hour and around the Parks gate it is 60km per hour. Overtaking should not be necessary anywhere but the overtaking lanes. Nothing is worse than having an accident, causing an accident or not arriving to work at all. Remove the snow from your vehicle before you leave the resort, as it is an offence to have an unsecured load. A slab of snow flying through the bends into an oncoming vehicle is an avoidable hazard. Recently, a fully formed 50cm high snowman built on the bonnet of an SUV, was sighted halfway down the mountain from Perisher and reported to the local police. Check the weather and road conditions before you head off. High winds and fallen trees are common in alpine areas, and conditions can change rapidly. Be prepared by having a warm blanket, extra jacket, some food, gloves and a torch in your vehicle, in case you are delayed or need to help another traveller. Courtesy goes a long way and doesn’t cost anything… just a smile and patience. It is a beautiful drive… enjoy your season and see you next year!

beware of low lake levels Trout fishermen heading to the NSW Alpine Lakes during the winter fishing season have been warned of extremely low water levels, particularly on lakes Eucumbene and Jindabyne. Snowy Hydro CEO Paul Broad says while the levels are low, it is not unexpected considering the recent drought. “Eucumbene is the Snowy Scheme’s largest storage and plays in important role in regulating the highly variable inflows that the Scheme receives over multiple seasons and years. “It rises and falls over much longer periods than many of our other reservoirs. Our storages are usually at their lowest coming into winter and we expect to see them rise when we get the spring run off later this year. “At the moment Lake Eucumbene is at 23 percent of total storage which is low, but by no means the lowest levels we’ve operated under (Eucumbene dropped below 10 percent during the millennium
drought). Lake Jindabyne is at 63 percent of total storage.” Roads and Maritime Services Maritime Principal Manager South Mike Hammond said boaters would need to navigate with extra care, particularly if they had not been boating on the lakes in several months. “Water levels of Lake Jindabyne and Lake Eucumbene are the lowest they have been in many, many years,” he said. Marine Rescue Alpine Lakes, which is based in the high country, has recently commissioned a new rescue vessel to enhance its emergency response capability. There is a heightened risk of hypothermia for anyone falling overboard on the region’s lakes. Boaters or other water users who need help in an emergency on the Alpine Lakes should call Triple Zero (000). “The dangers associated with reduced water levels

include the many submerged and semi-submerged hazards in the water, such as trees, fences and rocks - which won’t appear on electronic charts,” said Mr Hammond. “Our concern is that many people who go fishing in our alpine lakes are from Sydney and surrounds and may not have been to the lakes since this time last year when the water levels and associated navigation hazards were very different. “If skippers attempt to follow a path they preset last year, this will be bound to cause issues. A lot of the navigation markers are exposed, so many of the locations to avoid are not accurately flagged.” Mr Hammond said anyone who fell into the water would be risking their lives. Boaters are reminded that lifejackets are compulsory to be worn by everyone on board a boat on alpine waters in NSW. The stations, situated on Snowy River Avenue near cafes and amenities, will allow drivers of electric vehicles to charge their cars within about 30 minutes. The Jindabyne station is the NRMA’s third electric vehicle station location to open to the public, following stations at Sydney Olympic Park and Wallsend, as part of the company’s $10 million investment to build one of Australia’s largest fast charging networks across NSW and the ACT. NRMA Chief Investment Officer Rachel Wiseman said the electric vehicle fast charging network would ensure Members were prepared for the future of motoring. “As Australia’s largest membership organisation, our focus is to keep people moving and we believe we have a key role to play in leading the transition from petrol to electric vehicles,” Ms Wiseman said. “Our network will cover major highway routes across NSW and the ACT, ensuring about 95 per cent of electric vehicle journeys will be within 150 kilometres of a fast charger, so that motorists know they can continue their journeys without fear of range anxiety. “While Australia’s electric vehicle market is still in its infancy, there’s no denying this is the future of motoring. Australia no longer manufactures cars locally and global manufacturers have already shifted their focus and investment to electric and hybrid technology, so we are at the forefront of helping motorists to be prepared with accessible chargers in practical locations.” Deputy Premier and Member for Monaro, John Barilaro said he hoped the stations would unlock the beauty of the Snowy Mountains to even more visitors. “Tourism is the lifeblood of the Snowy Mountains region,” Mr Barilaro said. “Having fast charging stations in Jindabyne would ensure that the local community are at the forefront of motoring and boost local tourism. “There is so much on offer to tourists in the Snowy Mountains, being able to share it with even more visitors is an exciting venture.” The Jindabyne site has been delivered with the support of the Snowy Monaro Regional Council. “Council is excited to be partnering with the NRMA to deliver two fast-charging electric vehicle stations in Jindabyne,” Snowy Monaro Regional Council Mayor John Rooney said. “Our region is one of Australia’s most popular tourist destinations, and through the installations of these electric vehicle charging sites, we look forward to welcoming even more holiday-goers. ‘I thank the NRMA for their support and their ongoing commitment to keeping Australian motorists on the move.”

MONARO’S MOUNTAIN BIKING BOOSTED Mountain bikers have a new track they can test themselves on, located on the outskirts of Cooma. The Mt Gladstone track has just officially opened and is ready for use. Construction of an additional 6km of trail complements the existing mountain bike trail network at Mount Gladstone. Jindabyne Landscaping have worked hard over three months to create the new flow trail network that will allow riders of beginner to intermediate level to access new areas of the Mount Gladstone Reserve. The trails are a win for the region’s mountain biking community and add to the region’s growing reputation as a year-round tourist destination. “With a growing number of cyclists and riders heading to the Monaro, gone are the days when Cooma and surrounds were only winter destinations,” Deputy Premier John Barilaro
said. “I’m thrilled that the NSW Government supported this project with $100,000 in funding, which will in turn support our region’s sporting and tourism economy. “On top of providing the Snowy Mountains MTB Club with spectacular new riding options, the new trails will boost the growing cycling industry and continue to encourage cyclists to visit the area and experience everything the Monaro has to offer.” The Cooma Mountain Bike Master Plan identified Mt Gladstone as a key area for trail development. “This is a great asset for Cooma and visitors to the area. Both Council and the MTB Club are hopeful that future funding will enable further development of the trail network,” said Snowy Monaro Regional Council Recreation Planner, Alannah Dickeson.

Making the ultimate tree change It was a leap of faith when John Cave and Tess Lavin moved from Brisbane to take ownership of the Bombala Post Office, but eight months later, all you will hear is how happy they are.
“We love it here, and are very happy with how we’ve settled in,” John says. “We are definitely here for the long haul now.” The couple owned a stone restoration business in Brisbane, but were interested in a lifestyle change that would take them away from the hustle and bustle of the city, as well as the rising crime rate. “Tess found the Post Office for sale online and we just liked the look of it right away,” John explains. “We came for a drive, which took four days, spent half a day in Bombala and then drove back again. “Once we were here it wasn’t really the town that grabbed us at first, but the lovely iconic building, and then the people. The people have just been fantastic.” John and Tess underwent the considerable training that is required by Australia Post, and the couple and their dog, Charlie, have now become familiar faces at the Bombala Post Office, which they have run since late last year. “We are definitely here for the long haul now.” “The country lifestyle was all new to John, but the people have been so lovely and welcoming,” she said. “You really do miss that community spirit when you’ve been away from it for a while.” The couple have found it very easy to become part of the Bombala district, getting involved in the Chamber of Commerce and the local Rotary Club, making friends quickly. John and Tess add that the community was also very patient while they found their feet in the busy Post Office, but it is clear that they are now excelling in the business. In very exciting news, the Bombala Post Office has been ranked number three in the entire region for Banking Operations, and that’s out of 104 post offices in NSW. “That’s really good, were very pleased,” says John. “And it’s a good thing for the area too.” And they’re comfortable enough now to start making
some improvements, both to the lovely old Post Office building and the products they offer. “We really want to provide for the community,” Tess says. This has already seen a full range of mobile phones, locked and unlocked, being made available, while the Post Office also now takes care of NRMA Insurance transactions. And John and Tess have taken great pleasure in stocking a wide range of locally produced items, including Errinundra Preserves, Lizzi & Rose candles, Ambrosial Artisan Soap, and the popular Saarinen Organics, produced in nearby Wyndham. The Bombala Post Office will also be getting in some exciting gift lines for Christmas, while it already offers a beautiful range of books, both for children and older readers. Things are certainly evolving at the Bombala Post Office, and everyone is encouraged to check out their instagram page, or just pop in to say hello to John and Tess – and of course Charlie, who has become a well loved local already!

Charlotte Pass Snow Resort Pty Ltd (CPSR) has announced a 10 million-dollar, 10 Year Capital Investment program for the resort. This unprecedented investment at Charlotte Pass will see an increase in lifting capacity and the expansion of accessible terrain, through the installation of a brandnew Surface Lift towards Mount Stilwell and the replacement of the Basin Poma with a new surface lift. The snow season will be extended to operate from the June to October long weekend each year, with the installation of automated snowmaking to cover the Kosciuszko Triple Chair (to Mid-Station), Kosi Carpet and Basin Poma areas. The ‘Grand Old Lady of the Mountains’, the Kosciuszko Chalet Hotel will be undergoing a major refurbishment of all guest rooms, food and beverage outlets.

The Charlotte Pass Oversnow Transport eet will be expanded, with two additional Oversnow vehicles. Charlotte Pass will also be investing in a range of initiatives to improve the environmental performance of the resort. This investment will also see the development of Year-Round activation of the resort, including the construction of conference and multifunction facilities at the Kosciuszko Chalet Hotel. The resort will also move towards the provision of accommodation, food and beverage facilities year-round, as well as the operation of the Kosciuszko Triple Chair during peak periods. Tommy Tomasi Thredbo Ski Patrol Founder. At 92 years old, Tommy Tomasi is a face of Thredbo and a long-serving member of the Thredbo Ski Patrol, having only retired last year. Many friends and Thredbo locals celebrated his birthday at Eagles Nest, where he was presented with his own chair. Previous owners had always given Tommy a free coffee, in recognition of his long service to the skiing community as a Ski Patroller. It was Tommy Tomasi and a couple of other skiing enthusiasts who founded the Thredbo Ski Patrol in 1958, with Tommy becoming the inaugural President in 1962, and a Life Member in 1983. As an immigrant from war-torn Europe, and passionate ski-racer from Bergamo, in northern Italy, Tommy sought a better life in Australia. He arrived in Fremantle by boat in March 1949 on the ‘Toscano’, not realising there was snow in Australia. In 1952, Tommy crossed the Nullabor, making his way to Cooma where he was employed on the Snowy scheme as a linesman in Jindabyne for a short time before applying to become a ski instructor at the Chalet. He fell in love
with the Australian skiing life, the Chalet, and with Joyce Sloane who he married in 1953. The early days of skiing at the Chalet had primitive rope tows, so Tommy, Tony Sponar, and Sascha Nekvapil hiked up to more interesting slopes on the Main Range, looking for a potential race site, a run on Lady Northcott, that was just under a thousand metres long, where racers skied one at a time. These three men were the first winners of the ‘Golden Eagle’. In 1955 Tommy re-joined the Snowy Mountains Authority as a Hydrographer, based in Jindabyne, which allowed him the opportunity to traverse most of the upper Snowy Mountains area in 4WD Land Rovers. Hickory touring skis were part of the SMA issued equipment. It was around this time, the Alpine Way to Thredbo was being built by the SMA for use by the Hydro operations, but Tony Sponar built a rudimentary structure, called “The Hotel” with a small reception, a bar and a restaurant. It was these early days of Thredbo’s development that set Tommy Tomasi’s course for a lifelong association with Thredbo’s Ski Patrol.
Tommy Tomasi started a ski shop in Sydney called The Ski Den with FJ Palmer, as a buyer importing European ski clothing and equipment directly from Italy, Austria, France and Switzerland. After 18 months, that business was wound up, but Tommy was offered an opportunity with Fleets Ski Hire, developing their retail business, where he stayed for nine years. During this time with Fleets, Tommy combined his buying trips with taking ski tour clients through Europe. He continued to take ski tours for Travelplan for 30 years. At the same time, Tommy was approached by Spalding to become the State, then National Product Manager, travelling to all the major ski shows in Europe North, America, UK and Japan. Tommy Tomasi has always had skiing in his life, and has shared his passion for skiing, the mountains and alpine culture with so many people all over the world. As one of the founders, and inaugural Vice-President of the Thredbo Historical Society, Tommy Tomasi still has many more stories to share with the skiing fraternity. Many happy turns Tommy!

All-star line-up of Olympic coaches inspire the next generation of skiers and snowboarders Over 300 kids turned out for the Torah Bright Mini Shred in Thredbo
The Torah Bright Mini Shred in Thredbo supported by Toyota went off with an absolute bang today with over 300 kids enjoying an inspiring day of shredding with some Australian Winter Olympic legends. Enjoying what they all were describing as the “Best day ever”, they learnt new skills and tricks from an all-star line-up of Australian Olympians, professional coaches and of course Olympic Gold Medallist, Torah Bright. The coaches were some of Australia’s best from the Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games including Olympic silver medallist Jarryd Hughes, Toyota Ambassador Belle Brockoff, Jess Rich, plus other Olympic legends including six time Para Olympic Gold Medallist Michael Milton, Dual Olympians Manuela Berchtold and Scott Kneller…Plus local legends including Jye Kearney, Charles Beckinsale and many others. The sun was shining all day, putting on perfect conditions for a fun day hiking, learning and shredding the exclusively built park located on Friday Flat. Thredbo built an incredible mini terrain park for all kids to enjoy, with four different line options to choose from, each offering a step up in progression for the mini-shredders to dial in their new tricks and feel confident doing so. There were jumps, rails, transitions, hips, quarter pipes, rollers and more for every kid to learn and progress in a fun and friendly environment. All Mini-Shredders walked away with a tonne of new skills, selfies with their heroes, awesome
prizes, bragging rights, limited edition mini shred bibs and more thanks to Rhythm Snow Sports, Roxy and Toyota. The biggest takeaway of the day however was all the new snowboard and ski tricks to keep working on throughout winter. Torah’s aim of the day was to show all kids the fun associated with progression and learning a new manoeuvre. “The Mini Shred is my favourite day of the year,” said Torah. “It’s fun, it’s about making new friends to shred with and learn new things. “Seeing the talent level of little Aussie shredders is amazing, and it’s incredible to have such an brilliant line-up of inspiring athletes and Olympians to share advice, tips and stoke with all the kids. It sure was a day to remember…bring on next year” The kids and parents had some great things to say about the day: “Today was awesome! I love shredding with my friends and I can’t believe I got to hang with Torah and all these cool pros” “So stoked I landed my first 360 today” “This really is an awesome day for both parents and kids, I can’t believe our son is meeting all of his idols and riding with them” – Andrew and Sarah Lesslie The day ended with a huge signing session with all the pro’s, where all kids received a free limited edition mini shred bib, t-shirt and poster to have their favourite pros and Olympians sign, there were smiles for miles!
Sam tait’s road to the paralympics “I wanted to be a skier again and when I was in rehab I saw a video of a sitskier and I instantly knew that I wanted to do that and compete at a Paralympic Games.” In 2013, Sam was your typical 22-year-old. However, a motorcycle accident while he was a new learner rider in Wollongong, NSW changed his life forever. Breaking his T11 vertebrae, he is now paralyzed from the hips down. Sam woke up three days after the accident surrounded by his family having been airlifted to the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney with no recollection of the accident. Sam now lives with a T10 complete spinal cord injury. Now 27, Sam has achieved his goal of reaching the Paralympic Games in South Korea, placing 11th in Downhill. He considers it his greatest achievement. “I have never felt anything like that moment, crossing the finish line taking a breath, realizing I had just completed my first ever Paralympic race and having my whole family there to support and watch me. It was a very special moment for me and I will never forgot it.” Sam was a skier before his accident, but never
competitive. Always at Perisher, where his parents own Corroboree Ski Lodge, Sam had been on the slopes since he was just two years old. When he was older, the family went on overseas ski holidays. It took a lot of intensive rehabilitation to get Sam ready to sit ski following his accident, however this was not the most difficult challenge for Sam. “The most challenging part of my recovery was readjusting to normal day to day life as a paraplegic. There was alot to take in and get my mind around, I’m still adjusting today. “One of the hardest parts I really struggle with is being out in public and thinking everyone is judging. Even though I know they are not it still plays with my head a little.” Sam says he has not taken this journey alone and is incredibly thankful for the support he has from those around him. “I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today without my family. They have supported me in every
decision I want to do, even if mum doesn’t approve (the speed events scare her). Words can’t even explain how grateful and appreciative I am to have my family so close to me and helping me with every step of my journey. “I also want to say a massive thank you to Kelly Beahan. She became my S&C coach not to long ago and I have never met anyone more motivated to achieve want I want to achieve. Kel has changed the way I train for the better and changed the way I look at my recovery and training to be an even more elite athlete. I am lucky to have Kel on my side.” Sam spends June to September in Perisher training on snow and in the gym six days a week. During October, he is based at home doing dry land training, and from November to March Sam is overseas, mainly around Europe, training on snow and off snow in the gym and competing at Europa Cups and World Cups. From April to June, Sam is back home conditioning for the next winter.
Sam recently represented Australia in para-ice hockey where he took to the ice as part of a half time event during the USA vs Canada Ice Hockey Classic at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena on June 30, 2018. Sam was asked to trial for the para-ice hockey event on Friday night June 29 before taking to the ice on Saturday. Friday night was the first time Sam had tried his hand at ice hockey. Sam took to the ice in front of a crowd of 13,000
people alongside other Paralympic athletes such as Michael Milton, Joany Badenhorst and Tori Pendergast. Sam, who qualified for all five alpine skiing events for the 2018 Winter Paralympic Games in Pyeongchang, is currently training in the hopes of qualifying for the 2022 games in Beijing. With his introduction to para-ice hockey, a whole new world of opportunities has presented itself with Sam
interested in pursuing it as a potential career path after skiing. Sam names Rio 2016 co-captain and three-time Paralympic gold medalist Kurt Fearnley as his hero.

The Alpine Hotel
The Alpine Hotel was opened in 1938 as a coach house and inn owned by Tooheys. The licence was originally held in Kiandra from 1880, however after a fire destroyed the building there, it was transferred to Cooma. The car park in Commissioner Street at the back of the hotel used to be the stables and accommodation units, where coaches would stop over on their way to and from the snow. Eventually the council acquired that land and turned it into the carpark it is today. Tooheys also built a hotel in Bathurst around the same time. Called The Knickerbocker Hotel, the design of the building is identical. As time went on, The Alpine Hotel became a place of accommodation for employees of the Snowy Mountains Scheme. It also boasted a silver service restaurant, which was frequented by the Snowy workers who would travel down from the mountains especially to dine there on weekends. In 1959 the hotel underwent a massive renovation. The licensee and manager at the time, Darrel Squires, invested £130,000 into the hotel. Increasing the accommodation capacity by adding a new wing, the hotel could sleep 150 people and rooms were often in high demand and booked well in advance. Being such a hub of activity, The Alpine Hotel was run with 60 employees at the time. With the introduction of a modern lounge, extension to the saloon bar, a new kitchen, dining room expansion, updated reception area, as well as new carpet, lighting and general décor and equipment, the transformation was a big undertaking. During this time the first and second floor verandahs were also closed in.
Nowadays the upstairs façade of the building is heritage listed, in particular the cantilevered awning and the horizontal striations in the brickwork. The current premises still has the original tiles in the walkway leading from the front of the building to the function room out the back, which is also original, as are the bathrooms in the upstairs rooms. The Alpine Hotel has had many owners over the years, including one of the wealthiest women in Australia. Betty Klimenko, daughter of Westfield cofounder John Saunders, was the first woman to own a Supercars team and owned the hotel for a short time in the early 2000s. Another small renovation took place in 2008 and current owners Kris and Michael Sharkey bought the

hotel in 2013. The original building plans proudly hang on the walls in the Alpine Hotel, as does a 1953 image of the hotel from a postcard found in Michael’s grandmother’s possession. While she was unwell, her family were sorting through some belongings at her home in Maitland and came across a postcard with a photograph of the Alpine Hotel. Her nephew, Michael’s father’s cousin, had sent it to her because he had at the time been working at the chemist next door, which was also in the photo. Aside from postcards, the Alpine Hotel has also featured in a song. Written by Irishman Ulick O’Boyle, who started a group called The Settlers in the 60s, the song Cooma Cavaliers describes a night out for Snowy Scheme workers at the Alpine. We pull up in Sharp Street by the Alpine Hotel If you’ve been to Cooma, you’ll know this place well, And before we get inside, our order rings out: “Four vinos, three schnappses, two slivovitz, one stout!” In 2014, a book launch took place at the Alpine Hotel, which was organised by Ulick’s daughter. Entitled Songs of the Snowy Mountains, the same title as the first of six albums Ulick produced, it contains several pieces by The Settlers as well as the history of the group. Michael and Kris say many have come back to visit the Alpine Hotel to reminisce about those Snowy Scheme days, and they love to hear their stories.

Refurbished NPWS alpine lodge opens for public rental

The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS)’s refurbished Numbananga Lodge at Smiggin Holes has opened for bookings in time for the 2018 ski season.
The lodge dates from the 1960s and is the only free-standing, selfcontained lodge available to the public within Smiggin Holes. “It’s wonderful to see Numbananga Lodge, which is of local heritage value and is part of the cultural landscape of Smiggin Holes, transformed into nature-based accommodation which makes best use of the building,” said NPWS spokesman, Mark Lees, said. “As a result of the refurbishment, NPWS can now offer contemporary accommodation for up to six people at a time during the winter ski season as well as throughout the rest of the year. “During winter, the lodge offers ski in and ski out access, and it’s
superbly located in the heart of Smiggin Holes,” he said. The three-bedroom lodge was originally built to service the growing tourism industry, and the recent refurbishment works were designed by a heritage architect and are sympathetic to the heritage values of the building. An environmental assessment was undertaken by the Office of Environment and Heritage and the Perisher Ski Resort was consulted as part of the environmental assessment process. Work included renovation of the kitchen, bathroom, laundry and drying room, installation of new double glazed, thermally efficient windows, replacement of external
cladding and a new staircase. “This visitor accommodation arrangement delivers a revenue stream for NPWS to invest back into park management to support conservation and public use,” said Mr Lees said. Visitation to Kosciuszko National Park has increased by over 20 percent, and by 12.2 percent in the surrounding Snowy Mountains region, over the past two to three years. The refurbishment was funded by the 2017 NSW Government budget, with $7.6 million allocated over three years for the re-use of existing buildings in national parks for short stay visitor accommodation.

Formerly located at the Hain Centre, the bakery has reported being busier than ever since moving into the centre of town. Owners, Ines and Bruce Callaghan opened the first Cooma’s Original Hotbake at 86 Vale Street (now the Flower Pantry) in 1991. “We would open at 2am, when the pub closed and serve a Top Shelf - a hot cheese and bacon roll with ham, cheese and tomato,� Ines said. “That was what everyone would go for of a night time.� In 2002, they moved to the Hain Centre where the business quickly grew. In the 16 years Bruce and Ines were in the Hain Centre, they saw many shops come and go, including Woolworths, IGA, Rivers and Birdsnest. “A lot of people assume we were quiet down at the Hain Centre, but we weren’t!� Ines said. Before opening at the new Sharp Street location, Ines, her family and bakery staff worked hard to renovate and refurbish the building. They repainted, installed new light fixtures, upcycled the counters from the Hain Centre shop, did a complete overhaul of the flooring and even moved a wall to enlarge the baking area. Long-time employee Tammy and her partner
Pete made the pallet tables and counter tops and the tables and chairs were brought over from Feed CafĂŠ. “Without Tammy, Pete, Annette, my daughter Renee, her husband Dave and my grandkids Blake and Paige Drew, we wouldn’t be open right now,â€? Ines said. “Everyone worked so hard, they’re amazing.â€? Bruce is the head baker and is sometimes joined by his grandchildren who are learning the ropes in the kitchen. Ines said the bakery is really a family affair. “If you’re a relative, you’re in here!â€? Ines manages the business end of things, but can usually be found somewhere around the shop front, greeting and chatting with customers. “I love dealing with customers, but I actually like paper work too, if I can get to it!â€? She said. Cooma’s Original Hotbake is open Monday to Friday 5am - 5pm and Saturday 5am - 2pm. Closed Sundays and public holidays.

Get creative Paint the Landscape Weekend Retreat
During this weekend workshop, you will complete an outdoor landscape painting of the beautiful surrounding Lake Crackenback mountainside with guidance from artist Violetta Strabic. Whilst enjoying the scenery, you will be shown how to setup your painting station, and guided step by step from composing your landscape artwork, sketching out the landscape in charcoal, appropriate colour mixing and painting techniques to refine details of the sky, bark, leaves, and grassy rugged textures of the alpine. Violetta Strabic received a Bachelor of Creative Arts with Distinction in Visual Arts and also a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Communication Studies and Marketing from the University of Wollongong in 2005. After graduating, she was a creative marketing coordinator for six years whilst producing artworks after hours. In 2012 she took up the position as the Director of Project Contemporary Artspace, where she gained momentum with her professional art practice, and an insightful understanding of the art world. A year later she pursued her art career with passion after her treatment and remission from a rare form of clear cell carcinoma in the cervical canal. In 2014 she obtained a Certificate IV in Small Business Management, and a Certificate III in Micro Business Operations where she committed to her business as a full-time professional artist. In 2015 Violetta operated as a vendor at The Rocks Markets Sydney and various other locations selling her creations. From 2016 to the present, she regularly sells work in Sydney, holds exhibitions, teaches, runs workshops, attends art residencies and works on commissioned requests from public and private clients. Her paintings are painted in a surreal expressionistic style, based on interpretations of her daydreaming unconscious mind mingling with landscape, seascape, floral, still life, and black and white subject
matter. Each work carries beauty with a dash of mystery. When playing with art, she accentuates subject matter in its interpretation, creating the idea of gorgeous yet eerie flowing still lifes and landscapes in a semi-hidden figurative way like a ‘Where’s Wally?’ poster. Mixing her daydreaming ability with the use of fractals, she captures the attractiveness and playfulness of organic forms, to draw out the mind’s eye in an appreciative way we look at our surroundings. She currently resides in the coastal city of
Wollongong where she has a professional art studio setup for creating original oil and acrylic paintings and also handmade unique ceramic bowls, mugs, platters, vases and earrings. The Landscape Painting weekend will be held on October 13 to 14 and includes two nights accommodation, full buffet breakfast each morning, morning and afternoon tea on Saturday, lunch on Saturday and Sunday, landscape painting sessions including all painting equipment and free access to the resort’s onsite non-guided activities.

The Landscape Photography Weekend Hosted by multi award-winning Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) Master Photographer, Ben Kopilow, this weekend is an amazing opportunity. Ben will demonstrate how to utilise your camera to take the best shot. Ben is very familiar with both the Resort and the local area so knows all the best locations for taking that amazing photo and will teach you about light, the right time of day for shooting along with other hints and tips throughout the weekend. You will spend time around the Resort taking photos of the spectacular snow gums, mountain landscapes, rugged countryside along with beautiful rivers, lakes and streams. Anyone who can use the basic functions of their camera and who wants to improve their photography and/or their understanding of the visual medium.This workshop combines classes on camera craft, composition, lighting and Photoshop along with practical hands on help during morning and evening photo shoots in the beautiful mountain environment of Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa. Your tutor and guide will be multi award-winning AIPP Master Photographer Ben Kopilow, who has 14 years experience as a professional photographer, and has a thorough knowledge of the area. The workshop will focus on landscape and nature photography, but will also include help for there kinds of photography as well. Ben is an accredited professional photographer as well as a speaker, educator, judge and mentor in the photography industry. He holds Master of Photography honours with the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) and currently serves as the ACT division president. He joined the institute and was accredited in 2006 and has served on the ACT council for the intervening 10 years. Ben is the founder and principal photographer of Fusion Photography, a busy wedding and portrait studio established in 2002. As a wedding photographer Ben has worked all over Australia as well as Asia Pacific, Italy and LA. Ben is also an award-winning landscape/nature/fine-art and editorial photographer, contributing to international image libraries where his work is sold and published on everything from greeting cards and books to billboards in New York. Ben runs regular photography workshops and works as an assessor and judge for the AIPP and various other institutions and clubs. Drilling down: the Snowy 2.0 geotechnical investigation

Picture a group of people wearing beanies and backpacks slowly walking through the rugged Snowy Mountains bushland. They aren’t tourists - they’re Snowy Hydro engineers investigating potential sites for Snowy 2.0. Project Engineer, Paul Smith, explains‌
To build Snowy 2.0, which links the Tantangara and Talbingo reservoirs with 27km of tunnels and several caverns for the underground power station, intensive geotechnical investigation is required. This critical process involves drilling deep into the earth to extract rock samples - or cores - which provide geologists with information to build a solid understanding of the geological conditions at the Drilling: Working with contractors SMEC and GHD, there have been more than 14,000 metres of cores, each about 63mm in diameter, extracted from the drilling work so far. The initial scope was for 31 boreholes to be drilled, but that has been revised up to 40 the deepest hole drilled has been 1165m and the shallowest 47m. The varying terrain and remoteness of some of the locations has meant using a variety of drilling rigs - with some fitted on barges for over-water drilling. We are around 80 per cent through the program, so we expect about 17,000m of cores when we’re done. The rock cores are stored and reviewed for quality assurance in Cooma and are sub-selected for testing at specialist Australian laboratories for their physical properties, such as strength, permeability and hardness. Geology: The 2.0 team have already determined through their historical records and current investigations that the geological conditions at the project area are complex. There are around 12 main rock types and eight faults, including the significant Long Plain fault, that would need to be tunnelled through. Faults are areas of past movement and are therefore highly fractured rock, generally with low strength and high water inflows, which can be quite

The geotechnical work, which has been ongoing for 12 months, is the key to developing a final, buildable design for the Snowy 2.0 underground tunnels and power station complex. We need to understand all the types of rock and their properties along the
difficult to excavate. Faults slow you down a lot when tunnelling, but the main implications of faults relate to the engineering support of the structure. From a construction point of view it’s quite challenging. Excavating through a fault zone we would need to use pre-grouting, to limit groundwater infiltration in the excavation, and then primary support consisting of rock anchors and reinforced concrete to stabilise the tunnel. When the confining stress (the weight of material above the rocks) is particularly low in, or near, these fault zones, steel lining is required to provide support. Essentially the more information we have from the geotechnical investigation regarding geological risks, the better we can plan and mitigate these risks. Exploratory works: Snowy Hydro is currently seeking approval for a program of exploratory works in the Lobs Hole area of Kosciuszko National Park, which includes excavation of a tunnel to the location of the proposed power station cavern. The tunnel would be between 3km and 3.5km in length, 8m high by 8m wide and provide access to the top of the cavern complex so investigation drill holes can be drilled. This will allow further analysis of the rock properties and stress conditions to confirm the suitability of the site for the underground power station.
So far we have drilled relatively small holes widely spread out across the alignment, but given the size and importance of the cavern complex we would like to excavate an exploratory tunnel. This will allow us to determine the exact geotechnical conditions, at a small scale, at the cavern location before the main construction goes ahead. The same kind of tunnel was created for the Tumut 2 power station in the 1960s. They found a bad area where they had originally planned to build the cavern and actually moved it to a different location. A comprehensive Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the exploratory works program has been lodged with the Department of Planning and Environment as part of the approval process. Members of the community have an opportunity to review the EIS and make a submission during the public exhibition period, which concludes on 20th August. Approval from the NSW Minister for Planning is required for any project works to be carried out and Commonwealth Government approval may also be needed.

One hundred members and guests packed Thredbo Alpine Hotel’s Kosciuszko Room on July 25 for the annual Thredbo Historical Society Mid-Winter Dinner. This year was a celebration of the 40th anniversary of Disabled Wintersport Australia and the 60th anniversary of the Thredbo Ski Patrol. The mid-winter dinner was emceed by Thredbo Historical Society President Alan Fredericks attended by Jordan Rodgers, General Manager of Thredbo Resort. Author Chas Keys delivered a short speech on the history of the Disabled Wintersport Australia, and acknowledged the 60-year history of the Thredbo Volunteer Ski Patrol. Thredbo Operations Manager, Stuart Diver, presented the two “Faces of Thredbo Awards” to Albert van der Lee, who travelled from WA to attend the evening, whilst Gaby Rascko and her daughter accepted the award on behalf of Bela Rascko. Albert van der Lee was Thredbo’s longest serving Resident Manager whilst Lend Lease owned and operated Kosciusko Thredbo. He undertook the detailed planning and implementation needed to bring Dick Dusseldorp’s vision for Thredbo. Van der Lee oversaw chairlift development and the fashioning of ski runs and traverses as well as the development of the road system, parking facilities, signposting, fire protection and sewerage. Van der Lee was also responsible for extensions to the Thredbo Alpine Hotel, and negotiations with regulatory government bodies on behalf of the resort. He was instrumental in the modernisation of the
village during his 25-year role with Lend Lease. During van der Lee’s time in Thredbo, he instigated the development of the Merrits beginners’ area, the creation of the Anton’s, Sponar’s and Karel’s T-Bars, and the development of the golf course and tennis courts. Several years after his retirement, he became the founding president of the Thredbo Historical Society, and later contributed to the recording of the resort’s history in the Society’s newsletter.
Albert van der Lee influenced most of Thredbo’s development over a period of more than two decades, leaving a considerable positive legacy with the resort in better aesthetic, functional and economical shape. “I have spent most of my career living here in Thredbo, and it is good to know that my contribution to this resort is acknowledged and appreciated. It makes me proud. Thank you to all of the Thredbo historians,” said Albert van der Lee.

Bela Racsko arrived in Thredbo in 1957, the resort’s first year, and made an immediate mark as the designer and builder of lodges. In partnership with his fellow Hungarian, Steve Szeloczky, he formed the Sigma Building Company which pioneered the construction of commercial, club and private lodges in the village.
Skilled in architectural design and building, his talents were in great demand in a difficult alpine environment unfamiliar to local builders. He designed, and obtained approvals for many lodges, and oversaw the construction by European migrant labour. In his first decade in Thredbo, his credits included

the original Roslyn (now Hi Noon), Candlelight, Golden Eagle, Karoonda, the Black Bear, Silver Brumby, Hing’s (now Leatherbarrel), Koomerang, Schlupfwinkel, Kasees, Winterhaus, Inala, Sitzmark, Munjarra and the original Lantern. He also built Punchinello, in which he lived and operated with his wife Gabi, and was active in building Thredbo into the late 1980s. Racsko’s buildings were small and simple by today’s standards, and by the late 1960s, about half of the Thredbo lodges were constructed by his company. As the years passed, lodges were expanded and rebuilt, and the Racsko signature became less apparent, yet element persist in Schlupfwinkel, which remains in near-original form half a century after its construction. Bela Racsko’s last building was the second Roslyn, across from the first lodge to bear that name. Fittingly the corner where Diggings Terrace, Bobuck Lane and Banjo Drive meet is named Bela’s Corner. His contribution to Thredbo’ village’s look and feel was considerable. Embracing the season, the Winter Mountain Adventure program included an outdoor campfire style cookup, truffle hunt and chestnut farm tour, a big winter feast dinner with wine tastings, a French breakfast cooking class and tour of a hazelnut and berry orchard. The idea was for locals and visitors to come and enjoy the uniqueness of our region in the season where many are inclined just to hibernate. A lot of people recognise now that the distinctive four seasons our region enjoys is such an untapped asset and opportunity for tourism. These days, people are looking for experiences, not just going out for dinner, and the event is set to deliver this as guests were able to taste, hunt, cook, chat, feast and wander their way through the weekend. Nest, together with Craig and Bindi from Happy Wombat Hazelnuts, Tom and Judy Robertson of Alpine Truffle & Chestnut Farm, Adrian Brayne of Obsession Wines, Tom and Helle Southwell of Johansen Wines and Richard and Elvie of Mount Tumbarumba Wines were the key drivers collaborating to bring the regionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s premium produce together for the special weekend.
Chestnuts are still a mystery to some people and events like this give great exposure to the unique produce, which is in turn beneficial to the industry. Chestnuts Australia were thrilled about the event and supplied their giant flame roaster for Fireside Friday. Local Chestnut grower Adam G and Tom fired up the roaster out the front of Nest, roasting fresh chestnuts to kick off the weekend. Fireside Friday was a casual night around the fire buckets with mulled wine made from Johansen Wines Merlot. River Cottage Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Paul West cooked up some grub on the fire, with Highfield Farm lamb sausages on the BBQ and bowl food and pizzas all on the menu. Two prominent local producers joined in for the Saturday night main event. Tumut River Brewing Co and Corowa Whiskey & Chocolate were alongside several Tumbarumba wines to offer tastings and chat to guests about their range of craft beer and whiskey. It was exciting working with other passionate growers and successful operators who share the love of quality produce and promoting our beautiful neighbourhood to the world.

Snowy Mountains Classic 2018

The first Snowy Mountains Classic was run in 2000 following the demise of the Paddy Pallin. This will be its 19th year and it has become a great race that provides a great finish to XC Ski Week. We are looking forward to another great race, the snow looks like it will make all the traditional courses possible, the final ingredient to make another successful race will be good weather. There will be the traditional four race distances run again this year – the Snowy Mountains Classic 30km, Guthrie Gallop 15km, Rock Creek Rush 7.5km and the 2.5km Wombat Ramble for the junior racers. You can pick your distance depending upon your skiing ability and fitness. Because the race is held two weeks before the Hoppet many skiers use the 30km or the 15km as test events for fine tuning their Hoppet fitness. All races start at the Nordic Shelter and run around all the trails with the longer ones planned to go up the Porcupine Trail and over Mt Wheatley, testing everybody’s fitness.
Registrations can be done through the SSA website www.skiandsnowboard.org.au/events/ The presentations will be held at the Sundeck Hotel at 3pm and will be followed by the XC Ski Week final presentations. Come along and enjoy a great ski event and celebrate the finish of another XC Ski Week.

Regional Manager Southern, Sarah Roche, said if a vehicle accidentally hits a power pole, streetlight or pillar box, the safest option is to remain in a vehicle â&#x20AC;&#x201C; unless the situation is life threatening. â&#x20AC;&#x153;While the first instinct may be to get out of the vehicle, fallen powerlines can pose a serious risk to drivers and passengers,â&#x20AC;? Sarah said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The vehicle may become live as well as anything else in contact with the powerlines, such as fences or trees.â&#x20AC;? Bystanders must stay at least eight metres away from fallen powerlines and anything in contact with them and call Essential Energy immediately on 13 20 80. If the situation is life threatening, call emergency services on 000 (triple zero). â&#x20AC;&#x153;Try not to panic, remain calm and stay in the vehicle until the power has been turned off and powerlines or electricity cables
removed,â&#x20AC;? Sarah said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;An emergency evacuation is extremely dangerous and should only be attempted as a last resort such as if the vehicle is on fire.â&#x20AC;? If an emergency exit is necessary, jump well clear of the vehicle, land with your feet together, and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t touch the vehicle, fall forward or backward, or allow your feet to step apart. Jump or shuffle with your feet together until you are at least eight metres clear of the vehicle, powerlines or anything else in contact with them. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fog, snow and ice are added risks for drivers during winter so exercise extreme caution in cold weather conditions. Allocate extra travel time to get to your destination and plan a route that avoids areas prone to poor visibility or black ice,â&#x20AC;? Sarah said.

Step back in time - explore the snowies’ history The Snowy River Historical Society hosts open days on the first Friday and Saturday of each month at the Berridale Public School on Oliver Street. Their current exhibition is a collection of ski clothing throughout the years, some great history and stories of Hotel Kosciuszko and information about mountain huts. The Snowy River Historical Society is a group of about 30 members, ranging in age from mid 20s to mid 90s. The group is interested in the history of the whole Snowy Monaro region and work towards creating displays from all the towns in the area. At their monthly meetings, they try and go on a trip to a particular location to explore and learn more about its history. Recently they went on the Dalgety town walk, the Bombala and Bungarby area and the junction of the Snowy River and the Maclaughlin River. The group is planning some trips to Snowy Plains
and the Queanbeyan Museum. Another event the Snowy River Historical Society is planning is a wedding dress parade, featuring wedding fashions from across the decades, as far

Health & Wellbeing Avoid the injury blues this winter As the days get shorter, colder and drearier, Sports Medicine Australia (SMA) is urging Australians to ignore the temptation to go into exercise hibernation this winter. Sports Physiotherapist Rosemary Riley said wet and wintry conditions combined with heightened injury concerns often prevent Australians from being active during the long, cold months. Sports injuries peak during the months of May, June and July, with sport related hospital admissions increasing by an estimated 30 per cent during winter.
“While exercising in cold conditions can lead to injuries and illnesses ranging from chilblains, muscle strains and ligament sprains to broken bones and hypothermia, many Australians are unaware that most winter injuries can actually be prevented by good preparation and the correct equipment,” Ms Riley said. “Although cold conditions can place extra demand on the body, with the right knowledge, preparation and attitude, you can be active and safe in winter and keep reaping those health benefits.”
SMA’s top tips for preventing injury this winter: • Check the forecast. How cold, windy and wet will it be? It’s important to tailor your work-out attire to the forecast. Lightweight layers that breathe and can be easily stowed are ideal so you can add/remove clothing according to the conditions and your exercise level. • Remember that sunburn can occur even on overcast days – particularly on the ski slopes. Apply sunscreen and protect your eyes with UV protection goggles or sunglasses. • Protect your head and extremities from heat loss.
Make sure you are equipped with beanies, gloves, wellfitting shoes and socks to limit excessive heat loss and prevent chilblains and frostbite. Illfitting footwear can also cause blisters, nerve and joint pain. • Those with a pre-existing condition affecting circulation such as Raynaud’s or Diabetes should take particular care and should consult a health professional for further advice. • Warm up and cool down gradually and thoroughly. Avoid cooling down when stretching by alternating stretches with warm up activities. Muscles, tendons and ligaments perform better and are less likely to injure
when warm and elastic. Consult a Sports Physiotherapist for specific exercises to manage past injuries and special conditions. • Drink up. It’s important to hydrate adequately and resist the temptation to ‘warm up’ with an alcoholic beverage as alcohol impairs thermoregulation and coordination. Avoid caffeine as it can also lead to dehydration. “There are so many great ways to be active in winter – by following these tips your risk of injury and illness will be reduced – leaving you no excuse but to get out there and get active,” Ms Riley said. “The benefits far outweigh the risks!”

Yarrangobilly If you have ever visited Yarrangobilly you may have visited the South Glory Cave, or been guided through the Jersey or Jillabenan Caves perhaps even a helmet and head torch tour in the Castle or Harrie Wood Caves. Well now Yarrangobilly is offering adventure tours into some of the wild caves.
Are you up for the challenge? You can choose to participate in the River Odyssey Tour which is a fun introduction to wild caving. The trip includes climbs, slides, squeezes, water filled passages and river rock hopping through the Diversion Tunnel and River Caves. The next level up is a trip through Mill Creek Swallet, and if you are looking for more of a challenge then this is the trip for you. You will experience bone crunching chimney climbs, slides, squeezes as well as knee bruising crawls that will test your stamina. This cave is not for the faint hearted. Previous participant Indigo stated “this was a highlight” of her recent trip to Kosciusko National Park. After donning overalls, helmet and head torch you head off to explore the underground world. The tours run for approximately 3.5 hours and include a walk through the stunning Yarrangobilly valley. Tour numbers are limited and each small group has two experienced guides. The River Odyssey tour runs in the warmer months with a trip coming up on Saturday 3rd November. Mill Creek is available all year round and is set to run on Saturday 6th October. A reasonable level of fitness is required.

Whale Watching
Sapphire Coast waters provide a spectacular feeding ground for whales. It all begins in late winter when huge numbers of whales, primarily humpbacks and lone southern right whales, stop to feed their young before the last stage of their journey to Antarctica. It is here that the warm East Australia Current and the nutrient rich Arctic flow converge to create an explosion of krill and pilchards that sustains life above and below the waves, year after year. You may very well encounter a spectacular humpback or rare blue whale, minke, southern right or orca. The area thrives with other sea life as well, such as common and bottlenose dolphins, seals, penguins, sunfish and turtles. Experience a whale from close quarters, on an unforgettable boat tour along the coast. You can be on the migration path within minutes of leaving port, and most guides offer guaranteed encounters between September and early November. Many ports offer a variety of trips, from short to day tours. The far south coast town of Eden has a rich fishing history and offers one of the state’s best vantage points for whale watching. To learn more about Eden’s history, including the hunting partnership between local indigenous Australians and killer whales, follow the Killer Whale Trail, which includes the Killer Whale Museum, Eden Lookout, the Davidson Whaling Station and Boyd’s Tower. The Killer Whale Museum houses the skeleton
of a famous local killer whale. Each Tuesday and Wednesday in August and September you can watch whales with experts from the Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre at Eden Lookout. Each November, the Eden Whale Festival highlights the southern migration of humpback and other whales and commemorates the town’s fishing and other histories with street parades, music, food, wine, storytelling and more. You can explore the Sapphire Coast on a whale watching tour with Gang Gang Tours or with Merimbula Marina and Cat Balou Cruises. Shore-based whale watching is another fantastic way to combine a hike through the unspoiled wilderness of one of the area’s rugged national parks with some coastal viewing. Bournda National Park is a natural playground filled with secluded beaches and scenic coastal walks. The superb views from the Tathra headland are dramatic. The challenging Kangarutha Walking Track near Tathra also offers spectacular sea views and lookouts for whale watching. Other activities to enjoy in the Bournda National Park include bird watching, camping, kayaking and canoeing.

Snowboarders of all ages line-up the 5th Transfer Banked Slalom Get the outfit ready, the board waxed and game face on as The Fifth Annual Transfer Banked Slalom returns to Thredbo on Friday 17 August for what will be the weekend of the winter for all snowboarders. The banked slalom event has re-emerged around the globe as the staple event that all boarders can enjoy, from grommets to grandpas, amateurs to professionals, it’s a gathering of the tribe like no other!
The 5th Annual Banked Slalom this season is a surf inspired theme which couples perfectly with the newly changed course location in the Playground Cruiser Area. The course this year will be littered with a-frames, wedges, slabs, banks and berms that any rider can manoeuvre in a fast paced fashion. Terje Håkonsen, the godfather of snowboarding, competed in last year’s event and claimed it was one of the best courses he’s ridden to date;
not too hard, not too easy, but the perfect inbetween so riders could give it a real good nudge. Joel Rapaport support act for Butterfingers at Station Resort Rapaport recently completed a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Big Vacationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; national tour with label mates Omar Musa, Mathas & P. Smurf, his own headline east coast tour, as well as supporting veteran live Hip Hop act, Butterfingers for their â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Big Night Outâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; tour.
Rapaport influences range from hip hop, UK bass, soul, African groove, garage and grime. He often performs with live instrumental electric guitar looping and a drummer. Joel writes his own material, with much of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Village Idiotâ&#x20AC;? reflecting his story of his music industry journey. Rapaport explains â&#x20AC;&#x153;I put so much of myself into these tunes and I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t wait to share them with audiences around the country. The response Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had to the album has so far been really amazing and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m excited to bring the songs alive with the live guitar.â&#x20AC;? Butterfingers is back on tour after a 10-year long hiatus from the recording studio with new material and continuing to bend genres and pushing boundaries of good taste (18+). The Snowpost touched base with Joel Rapaport ahead of this visit to our region. SP: Do you skate, ski or snowboard? JR: I was really into skating when I was in high school, and I have snowboarded a few times. I love the freedom that you feel when riding a skateboard or snowboard. It is a similar feeling that I get when making or performing music. SP: Have you played in Jindabyne or the Station before now? JR: I have been through Jindabyne a few times but never played at the Station.

School of Rap workshops and incursions are based around fun rhyming games and collaborative songwriting activities where young people are enabled to express themselves, through writing, recording and performing raps and making beats. SP: Are you open to do a School of Rap tour... in this region? JR: I would love to do a School of Rap specific tour and take our workshops and incursions to schools and communities all around Australia. SP: Who are your musical idols? JR: Musical idols would be Atmosphere, Mos Def, Roots Manuva, Wiley, A Tribe Called Quest, Anderson. Paak, Sage Francis, King Krule, Jimi Hendrix, Aesop Rock, Paul Kelly, Brother Ali, Sampa the Great, Beastie Boys, Johnny Cash, Dizzee Rascal, Little Simz, Lady Leshurr, Sean Price. SP: Who have you mentored in their musical journey?
SP: What was your impression of Snowy Mountains audiences? JR: The times when I played at Perisherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Peak Festival, the crowds were very lively, rowdy and highly excitable. All great characteristics in a hip hop audience. SP: What was the motivation/catalyst for setting up your own recording label? JR: To have our own outlet to release our music, independent to the major label music industry. We wanted to create a collective of artists that supported each other in various ways, and collaborated and
JR: In various ways, I have mentored some of the artists working with Big Village although we often worked as peers so we would kind of mentor each other in a lot of ways. I also mentor a variety of students in my work as a music teacher at Mission Australia, Sounds of The Streets, and students at School of Rap.
developing my live show with a live band. In terms of long term, collaborating with more artists and a vocalist and producer, and creating a live show that I can tour around the country, with other likeminded artists. SP: Have you toured overseas? Is that a goal? JR: Not quite. I have travelled around Europe in 2011 and played shows while I was there but I wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t call it touring, more just like going to festivals and gigs and getting up when I could. I would love to tour internationally one day in Europe, USA, Asia or Africa. SP: Where do you draw your lyrics inspiration from? Is it mostly autobiographical? JR: Yeah on the latest album it was definitely about things that were going on in my life. I think that is how I mostly write, trying to take a snapshot of my feelings and a particular real life situation and encapsulate it into a song. I am working on more new songs that are more outward looking so hopefully there will be a little less introspection on future releases, as I feel like I have kind of done enough of that for the time being. SP: What do you want your audiences to remember you forâ&#x20AC;Ś your legacy? JR: Someone who made innovative and original music and wrote songs that truly connected with people as if we were sitting in the same room when they listen to it. As someone who worked with, and gave a platform to other innovative, diverse and powerful artists. As Big Village, the aim has always been to create a catalogue of diverse, world class releases, that push the sound of hip hop into new ground.
SP: Where do you see your music industry career heading from here?
SP: Thanks Joelâ&#x20AC;Ś we look forward to seeing you live @ The Station!
JR: In terms of my creative work, writing and producing a new EP pushing forward with combining sounds of raps, electronic music and live guitar and

Be part of the first Giiyong Festival On Saturday 22 September, the Giiyong Festival will take place at Jigamy, just north of Eden. It will be the South East NSW’s first multi-art form festival celebrating traditional and contemporary Aboriginal culture through dance, art, music, film, theatre, food, sport, workshops and cultural tours. Headline acts including Baker Boy, Frank Yamma, Benny Walker & Band, Jessie Lloyd’s Mission Songs Projects, Nooky and Robbie Bundle will be supported by local performers like Gabadoo, Driftin’ Doolgahls, Chelsy Atkins and Alison Walker. Giiyong (pronounced Guy-Yoong) means ‘come to welcome’ in the South Coast language as spoken by the Elders. The festival will take place at Jigamy, a 58 hectare property situated nine kilometres north of Eden. Twofold Aboriginal Corporation own the property, which houses the Monaroo Bobbaru Gadu Keeping Place, a fantastic building featuring a huge auditorium and stage, and commercial kitchen with restaurant space overlooking gum trees and the pristine Pambula Lake. The Corporation’s building, the Mamadja Community Centre has a meeting room and stunning surrounds that will also be utilised for this event. Giiyong Festival will be the first event of its type held within the Yuin Nation, which stretches from the Shoalhaven River down into East Gippsland in Victoria and across to the Great Dividing Range. Giiyong Festival is presented to you by Twofold Aboriginal Corporation, Eden Local Aboriginal Land Council and South East Arts. Chris Bird is the CEO of Twofold Aboriginal Corporation and is working towards estanblishing Jigamy as a leading destination in the South East for Aboriginal cultural experiences. “Our vision is to create an inclusive place where Aboriginal people of the Twofold Bay Region are proud of our heritage and are part of the local economy, and to end the cycle of poverty in our community to create a real future for our children,” Mr Bird said. Giiyong is an alcohol-free event.
