For the seasoned skiers, it was a place of reliving memories and sharing them with friends. A new acquisition on display this year is pair of 3-metre long 1900 Amundsen skis. The skis and several other artefacts of significance were purchased in collaboration with the Perisher Historical Society and Mt Buller’s National Alpine Museum of Australia. Police are urging revellers and sports enthusiasts to make a plan and stay safe as this year’s ski seasons gets into full swing ahead of the school holidays. The official snow season kicked off last month and will run until October, during which millions of holiday makers are expected to flock to the NSW snowfields. Southern Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner Gary Worboys, said the official launch of ‘Snowsafe’ this month involves additional police being deployed in the area to ensure a safe and enjoyable ski season for everyone involved. Snowsafe is a specialised policing strategy involving highly-trained Alpine Operators, General Duties police, Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, Licensing Police and other specialist commands throughout the season. Assistant Commissioner Worboys said police are urging people to plan ahead and make safety their top priority when travelling to and from the snowfields and hitting the slopes this season. “Every year, additional officers are deployed in the region, which allows police to maintain a high-visibility presence in the snow resorts and surrounding alpine areas, Assistant Commissioner Worboys said. “Our officers are focused on road safety, alcoholrelated crime, anti-social behaviour and personal safety. “Licensing Police will be patrolling venues in and around the major resorts and we’re urging people to plan their night ahead of time and keep a look out for mates to ensure a safe and fun celebration. “Traffic and Highway Patrol officers will also be out in force patrolling highways and performing random drug and alcohol tests to ensure the safety of everyone travelling to and from the snowfields, Assistant Commissioner Worboys said. Holiday makers are urged to plan their travel beforehand and stay alert by taking regular breaks to ensure they reach their destination safely. Monaro Local Area Commander, Detective

Superintendent Rod Smith, said drivers need to remember to drive to the road and weather conditions and not take unnecessary risks. “Drivers should fix snow chains to their tyres in slippery conditions within the designated bays, ensure everyone in your car is wearing their seat belts and don’t drink and drive, Det Supt Smith said. “There can be high volumes of traffic travelling in and around the resort areas so drivers should also exercise patience and appropriate caution during those periods. “Our Lexus-sponsored Snowsafe vehicle will make a return this season, with officers out in the community to promote safe driver behaviour, Det Supt Smith said. Police are also urging hikers visiting the region to ensure their personal safety by submitting a Trip Intention Form and hiring a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) before heading out into the national park. “Hikers can access a PLB by way of a refundable deposit from one of the National Parks and Wildlife Service centres located at numerous locations including Jindabyne as well as Perisher and Thredbo resorts, Det Supt Smith said. “These simple safety measures can mean the difference between life and death if you become lost in the national park and need immediate assistance. “In addition, hikers need to check weather conditions in advance, wear appropriate clothing and take plenty of food and water, Det Supt Smith said. Hikers can contact the Snowy Region Visitor Centre for more information or visit: http://www. environment.nsw.gov.au/AskEnvironmentLineApp/ question.aspx?qaId=AEL-262 For general snow safety tips when visiting alpine regions, as well as useful links you can access: http://snowsafe.org.au/ The ‘Snowsafe’ Lexus RX 450h SUV is a community engagement vehicle provided by Lexus Australia under a sponsorship agreement.

Following an assault of a police officer in the execution of his duty in Jindabyne, police have issued a zero tolerance warning to residents and visitors alike. Police wish to warn people visiting the alpine region that if they wish to drink then do so in moderation and adhere to directions given by staff at the venues when asked to leave. The Monaro Command Crime Manager Detective Inspector Box said “If people wish to drink alcohol at venues in the area then do so responsibly. If you are told to leave a hotel then just leave and don’t argue with hotel staff or police “People who refuse to leave will be issued with an infringement notice for $550 which will make it an expensive night out just because you won’t listen. Don’t argue, just leave. Detective Inspector Box also stressed that Police will not tolerate their officers being assaulted. He said “Just because you don’t get your own way is no excuse to fight police. If you assault police you will be charged and put before the Courts. He also said “If you can’t handle your alcohol, then don’t drink. Police advise that they will continue with their focus on alcohol related crime in the Jindabyne area. This includes patron behaviour at hotels and

also those that want to consume alcohol in and around the township prior to attending the licensed venues.

Get the bus The Jindabyne night bus has returned for another year. Two 21-seat buses will operate on Wednesday and Saturday nights to provide a safe and reliable way for people to get home from restaurants and bars in the Jindabyne snow village, while one bus will operate on Friday night. The buses have moved about 5,500 patrons during the three month snow season, which has contributed to a reduction in drink driving and pedestrian injuries as patrons have a Plan B to make it home safely. The night bus services will operate from Wednesday June 24 to Saturday September 5 between 9.45pm and 2.18am on Wednesday and Saturday nights. On Friday night, the service will operate between 9.45pm with the last bus at 1.58am. Patrons pay a $2 contribution to use the service, with the buses picking up and dropping off passengers at key bus stops and local venues. All buses have on-board security.

Cooma ED faces its busiest time of the year Residents and visitors to Cooma have been asked to carefully consider their need to visit the hospital’s Emergency Department in coming months. The Cooma District Hospital is heading into its busiest period of the year with the ski season approaching and the influx of tourists to the Monaro and snowfields. People with minor aliments are advised that seeking treatment from a GP or other medical personnel could be more convenient and quicker with the seasonal winter increase in injuries likely to be treated at the Hospital’s Emergency Department from now until October. The details of local Cooma GPs can be found in the telephone book or through the internet.

Cooma Hospital’s ED Nursing Unit Manager, Matthew Holobrodskyj, said people can be assured that the Hospital’s Emergency Department will never turn away seriously ill or life-threatening emergencies. “However if the ‘emergency demand’ increases suddenly, or there are many booked admissions into hospital on any day, patients with minor aliments may experience delays in being treated in the Emergency Department, said Matthew. “The first person you’ll see in ED is the Triage Nurse who will decide the urgency of your condition. If your condition is very urgent you will be seen sooner by a doctor than if your condition is less serious. Very ill patients will always be seen as soon as possible, said Matthew.

Keep your Little Outlaw nice and warm this winter Little Outlaws children’s clothing store has moved to a new location in Jindabyne’s Town Centre. Although the space is smaller, the new shop is cosy and charming and has fantastic little goodies hiding in every nook and cranny. Owner Kate Ogilvie is a wealth of experience when it comes to quality products for children. Having owned Little Outlaws for 18 years, Kate loves her job. “One of the best parts is actually just getting to muck around with the kids when they come into the shop, she says, “I really enjoy children, and I’m more than happy to get down on the floor and entertain them while Mum and Dad have a browse around the store. Kate says that in her experience, it can be quite hard to find good quality winter clothing for children. “Some who are first time visitors to the area can underestimate just how cold it can get, so I make sure to have lots of lovely

woollen clothes to rug them up in. Not only does Little Outlaws have excellent quality clothing and shoes, Kate also has a great variety of toys available. Always on the lookout for new products, Kate loves to get in toys that are made from all different textiles. “I guess I’m a bit old fashioned in that I will always choose something educational over something that isn’t, she says, “I also really like toys that are good quality and are actually made to last. Kate also has fun craft supplies, ski wear, n nursery items, books, school wear and m maternity stuff in store. So this winter, come o down to the new Little Outlaws in the Town on C Centre at Jindabyne for everything your kids n need this winter. Check out the Facebook page for more in information.

Always a good time at the Jindy Bowlo

The gorgeous view of Lake Jindabyne is just one of the many reasons to check out the Jindabyne Bowling Club this winter

Come to the Jindabyne Bowling Club to have a bowl on the highest green in Australia.

Jindabyne Bowling Club is the place to be this winter. Not only does it have the highest bowling green in Australia, it also has the tastiest chicken wings around. Monday footy nights have become known as ‘Wings Night’ at the Club and over 65,000 were consumed last winter. That’s a huge 4.05 tonnes of wings or 250kg per week! With a brand new 150-inch projector screen now up for the Monday footy nights, owner Brett Gay is hoping to smash that record out of the park this year. Brett has run the Jindabyne Bowling Club for four and half years now. He and his wife met on the slopes of the Snowy Mountains in the mid 90s and have worked all along the south coast running pubs and clubs together. When they heard that the Jindabyne Bowling Club was up for grabs, they were happy to come back to the place they had met to create a life with their two children, who are very talented musicians. This year, the Club is having two point score

competitions running all season. Points are up for grabs on the Tuesday Nitro Poker Night and on Thursday’s Trivia Night. With points awarded just for showing up, you don’t even need to be a trivia or poker expert to be a winner. For each point you earn over the winter, you get an entry in the draw to win a $500 tab in Trivia, including food and drink – perfect to use for your end of season party. On the Tuesday Poker nights there is a Nitro snowboard up for grabs. Wednesdays and Fridays have even more prizes up for grabs with the members badge draw and the meat raffles. Fridays also have live music, so come on down and check out the local talent. With good meals at good prices, this family friendly bowlo is one of the top places for entertainment in Jindabyne. What could be better after an action-packed day on the slopes than a few beers with your mates while you play some barefoot bowls in the afternoon sun?

French chef Adrien will cook you up a storm at the Jindabyne Bowling Club.

Monaro Woodworks celebrates six months As part of the Renew Cooma initiative, Linda Sjostrom and Ryan Janszen from Jerangle opened up the unique Monaro Woodworks at the Cooma Snowstop six months ago. From sculptures to chopping boards and furniture to turned bowls, Monaro Woodworks has many interesting and beautiful works that make wonderful and unique gifts. Originally the concept was for timber products only, however after being approached by different local artists, they now have many metal items as well. “As long as they are handmade, we are happy to have them, says Linda. Although their beginning was slow, business has steadily grown and they now have the work of 22 different artists in their store. “When we first opened up, we wondered how we were ever going to fill the space, said Ryan, “But now we are struggling to find room for all the items. Ryan is very resourceful and has a passion for repurposing and recycling. With a mechanical background and a great imagination, Ryan is really enjoying running the Monaro Woodworks shop, full of creative products. “Each piece is unique and they are all

e handmade, says Linda, “Most of the artists are local and can even do some items to order. n Linda’s father was a logger, so she has been n around wood all of her life. She has her own work in the shop, including some beautiful timberr d property signs, gorgeous wooden spoons and chopping boards. Linda also has experience in going to markets.. e In addition to breeding horses on their Jerangle h property, Linda runs Drylands Nursery in which o she grows hardy plants that are well suited to e our Monaro climate. She has been selling these plants at markets for many years now. “I gott bitten by the market bug about 12 years ago when I was involved in some fundraising for a horse riding event, she says. Last month, Monaro Woodworks had a six month anniversary celebration. With most of the artists attending, the night was a great opportunity to swap tips and stories about their unique designs and techniques over a good old sausage sandwich. For more information and photos of the beautiful products available at Monaro Woodworks, check out their Facebook page.

Linda and Ryan of Monaro Woodworks have themselves been surprised at the success of their little store, full of beautiful locally made artworks.

Snowy Hydro releases ‘SnowyLIVE’ water app Real time water information from the Snowy Scheme is now available on your smart device through Snowy Hydro’s free SnowyLIVE water app. Over the last year Snowy Hydro has been creating the app with development specialists Spatial Vision, and SnowyLIVE can now be downloaded from either the App Store (for Apple devices) or Google Play (for android devices). Users can access a number of features including lake levels of Jindabyne, Eucumbene and Tantangara, and water releases from Jindabyne Dam, Tantangara Dam and Khancoban Dam. “Lake levels is one of the most commonly accessed pages on the Snowy Hydro website so it made sense to make the information available in an easy to use app that people can download and carry with them on their smartphones and tablets, said Community Relations Manager, Heath Woolley.

Camping is not permitted on lake foreshores except for in established caravan parks and National Parks and Wildlife Service areas such as Denison at Lake Eucumbene. The app has helpful information for locals and visitors to the region about Snowy Hydro’s four visitor facilities and advertises some of the caravan parks around the Snowy Mountains. “In providing the names, locations and easily accessed contact details for caravan parks, we hope to support other initiatives underway to reduce illegal camping, said Mr Woolley. There will be regular updates for the app version two is already in the planning stages which will also include the snow depths charts. Snowy Hydro provides a range of information to the public about the Scheme and believe that making this information available through the SnowyLIVE app will result in even greater communication with those interested in the Scheme. We would also like to hear your feedback on the app please email us at communityfeedback@ snowyhydro.com.au

Excellent marketing campaign results Tourism Snowy Mountain’s marketing campaigns promoting the region have been making excellent progress in creating on-going awareness and demand for the Snowy Mountains as a year-round destination. Results are now in for Stage 1 of the Spring, Summer and Autumn (SSA) campaign, September 15 2014 to May 31 , 2015, here’s a quick snapshot: Stayz (on-line accommodation booking portal) digital promotion has resulted in a $1,068,255 contribution to the region’s visitor economy. A great result. The objective was to increase bookings by 10 percent year-on-year, the result was over 13 percent. A two week Wotif (on-line booking portal for commercial properties) campaign burst in February 2015 resulted in a 16.71 percent increase in bookings year-on-year during the period, with substantial post-burst bookings received also. Since the new TSM website: www.snowymountains.com.au was completely rebuilt and launched 26 September 2014, there’s been a 31 percent increase in visits to the site, that’s over 85,000 new visitors. 26,076 new page views have been recorded on ‘’Where to Stay’’ and 69,881 on “Things to Do’’.

More than 32,000 new people have accessed the mobile friendly site and more than 17,000 using tablets. The revitalised Snowy Mountain’s Facebook page has grown from less than 1,000 to more than 24,600 since February 2014. TSM’s posts have reached over 900,000 people, with excellent engagement (sharing, likes and comments) providing outstanding word-of-mouth endorsement for the region. The plan for 2015-2016 is to achieve over 50,000 page fans. TSM Executive Officer Neil Thew said, ‘’Momentum has now been established with Stage 1 of our summer project, I believe the results to date are excellent, but the hard work must continue. Stage 2 will commence mid-September and will run into 2016, keeping our region’s ‘’There’s More to it Than You Think’’ non-winter message top-of-mind in the market-place using a variety of tactical measures.’’ It is expected that TSM will apply for a new Destination NSW Regional Visitor Economy Fund grant in November to continue promoting the region’s warmer months into 2017 and beyond. Final results will be distributed for both SSA and winter as soon as they’ve been finalised.

Great new cafe in Berridale - Berri Ripe

australianalpine resorts.com.au making fresh tracks in snow holiday travel Mother-daughter team Chris and Amy are the proud new owners of Berri Ripe café in Berridale. Previously the Two Moos, the Berri Ripe café is located in the centre of Berridale and is the perfect place to stop for a coffee and a stretch of the old legs on your way up to the snow. Berridale, known as the poplar village is a lovely little town and Chris and Amy are proud to call it their home. Having lived in Berridale for the past 12 years, the girls say that taking over the café has opened their eyes to just how special their town is. “Since we have been in the café, we have got to know everyone much better and we can really see what a wonderfully supportive community we have here.” With six years of experience between them of managing a café in Smiggins, the girls were ready to take on the challenge of running their very own place. Knowing the area and the nature of the hospitality industry in the Snowy

Mountains, they are the perfect team for the job. They have refurbished the café themselves, giving it a bright and stylish makeover and a fresh new addition to Berridale. They have even done up the sweet little courtyard out the back, which is the perfect place to sit on those gorgeous sunny winter days we love here in the Snowy Mountains. The menu has plenty of variety, and it is all at a great price. From yummy cakes and slices to fresh fruit salads, daily wraps and warm homemade soups, Berri Ripe has something for everyone. The chicken schnitzel burger is very popular, especially when you can grab it and can of soft drink for only $10. Need a quick and tasty brekkie to kick start your morning? How about a bacon and egg roll and a coffee for only $10? Berri Ripe is open 7 days, so pop in and see Chris and Amy for a yummy treat while you’re exploring the beautiful Snowy Mountain poplar village.

Veteran paramedic’s 2015 Snow Season advice:

‘Be prepared!’

NSW Ambulance Inspector Phil Brotherton is marking his 17th – and final – snow season with a safety message for snow goers this Queen’s Birthday long weekend: “Be prepared! Inspector Brotherton, who will retire next month after a tremendous 42 years with NSW Ambulance, has been based at Cooma-Monaro since 1998, this including management of the Perisher Valley-based ambulance station which is operational between the June and October long weekends. Inspector Brotherton said the snow season is traditionally a time of great recreational and social enjoyment, however this can easily be marred by lack of preparation and not heeding safety advice. “Downhill skiing, cross-country skiing and snowboarding are three of the most popular activities enjoyed by the snow-going community, Inspector Brotherton said. “But full enjoyment comes with being prepared – being aware of the conditions and taking notice of what the National Parks and resort staff tell you, particularly if you are going up in the chairs or travelling crosscountry. Never go out in conditions you have not experienced. “Unfortunately, some of the more serious jobs we’ve attended involve people who

disregard the weather advice then go out and get caught in something horrible. What makes it worse for us is we’re then expected to go out in those conditions and rescue them.â€? In many cases, people do not even make it to the snowfields having been involved in road incidents due to factors including fatigue and not driving to the conditions. “At this time there’s an increase in workload along the highways, from Sydney to the ski fields and also from Victoria via Wagga and Albury. “A lot of accidents involve people who leave it too late to travel; they leave after work or school and then want to travel all the way in one go. “At the other end, it’s people who ski for most of the day and then start travelling home. It’s a nice warm car and they’re tired and the potential for motor vehicle collisions increases. “Our advice is, allow plenty of time for travel and take extra care on the roads, particularly in wet or foggy conditions. Also, don’t travel if you are tired, and stop and have a rest at regular intervals. “If you’re driving into the Mount Kosciuszko National Park, it must be in an appropriate vehicle or one that is fitted with chains.â€? Paramedics also provide Alterations & Soft Furnishings the following additional tips on preparedness: ¡ get into shape before skiing – it’s a very physical activity and pre-season conditioning is very important, as is warming up and stretching the day before; ¡ take lessons – many of the injuries paramedics see affect novice and inexperienced skiers and boarders; ¡ wear good sun protection – sun reflects strongly off snow, even in overcast conditions; ¡ do not ski off formal tracks and never ski alone; MONDAY: 10AM TO 5PM ¡ ensure you have the correct TUESDAY: CLOSED equipment like helmets, knee/elbow WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY: 10AM TO 5PM pads and wrist guards and that it’s SATURDAY: 9AM TO 12:30PM in good condition and is properly Maybe St, Bombala NSW 2632 adjusted for you – especially when it’s rental gear; Ph: 0429 343 534

MAYBE DECOR

¡ always tell someone where you are going and when you’ll be back; ¡ carry a communication device like a satellite phone or an EPIRB in case you get into trouble – this is a must-have for people going off-trail or ski touring; and ¡ bring adequate spare clothing, food, water, a compass, maps and matches when ski touring. NSW Ambulance is prepared for any incident, with a team of experienced paramedics – many marking more than 10 seasons in the snowfields – available, together with a number of vehicles for use in snowy conditions including all-terrain and over-snow vehicles, four skidoos and snowcapable 4WDs and trailers. “We wish all snow-goers a safe, happy and injury-free ski season,â€? Inspector Brotherton said. Inspector Brotherton will spend his final shifts reflecting on a proud career that began in 1973 when he joined Tamworth Ambulance Station as an “honouraryâ€? (volunteer) ambulance officer, following in the footsteps of his father Stan who spent more than 20 years with NSW Ambulance. He said job variety, camaraderie and the tremendous advances in para-medicine over the years had kept him committed to NSW Ambulance for more than four decades. His

operational duties have included Intensive Care Paramedic/Helicopter, Rescue and CoOrdination. Stand-out jobs include the 1997 Thredbo landslide on July 30, 1997, which left 18 people dead. “I was the first ambulance commander on scene at Thredbo and was there until the end. Thredbo is one of the primary jobs that sit in my memory, along with the Jindabyne bus accident in June 2011. “Looking back, we’ve done a lot of big jobs down this way; the big floods that went through from Goulburn all the way to Wagga, and the bushfires. “My role has involved a lot of variety and I will certainly miss it, as I know my dad did. REMEMBER: If someone is injured at the snow, call Triple Zero (000) immediately and ask for Ambulance, then commence first aid. If first aid is not known, the Ambulance Triple Zero (000) operator will provide advice over the phone. Pictured: Inspector Phil Brotherton (far right) is pictured with Paramedics Craig Potts, Nathan McEvoy and Mick Couvee in a photo taken last season. All will return (with the exception of Mr Snowman!) alongside other team members for the 2015 season.

Village Ski Hire For reliable, friendly service when hiring your ski gear this winter, you can’t go past Village Ski and Snowboard Hire in Cooma. Keith Thorn has owned and operated Village Ski since 1974. Some of Keith’s customers have been coming to him since they were kids and they are now bringing in their own children, or even grandchildren, to hire gear for the winter. Starting up in Newcastle, Keith expanded down to Cooma and has never looked back. Although, he does sometimes miss the coast and occasionally sneaks off for a bit of sailing with his partner Jude in the summer. Keith and Jude are passionate skiers and love to see the happy and eager faces of holidaying customers come through their door. From skis to snowboards, accessories and snow chains and great brands like Rojo, Seatrail, Kaos, Reusch and Oyuki, Village Ski have a great range of gear. Conveniently located in their new spot at the Snowstop Village on Sharp Street (next to the Mobil petrol station), it’s an easy place to pull in, stretch the legs and grab your gear on your way through town. Keith says he has been amazed with the change in technology of snow equipment over the years, making snow sport much easier and more accessible to people. Over his time, Keith has been able to keep up to date with all of these technologies by having some world champion ski racers working in the shop.

Group bookings and families all welcome. Bookings essential for large groups

The introduction of snowmaking was also a game changer for Keith and his business. Being able to extend the season by supplementing the natural snowfall with snow guns has been a remarkable advancement. Keith and Jude also love the community here in Cooma and in the Snowy Mountains. Back when the Thredbo landslide disaster occurred, Village Ski was the only ski shop that was open 24 hours. In the middle of the night, Keith got the call that rescuers needed gear urgently, so out they went with a load of equipment for them to use. It’s this willingness to drop everything and help that makes the community here so special. One of Keith’s specialties is snow chains. Chains can sometimes be overlooked by first time visitors who don’t realise that if your vehicle is not suitable, you are required to have chains on your car. Another problem Keith often sees is that some customers come in with a rental car, only to find that the vehicle is not able to have chains fitted to them. A great new product that Keith and Jude have is called the AutoSock. This is a fabric snow chain. They are much easier to put on the car and they give a good grip in snowy and icy conditions. They meet all the standards and are a great alternative to those fiddly metal snow chains. Village Ski has all the equipment you need for your trip up to the Snowy Mountains. Check out their website at www.villageski.com.au to take a look at the range or to book your hire online.

Come for the food, stay for the friendly faces

Come down to the Cooma Ex-Services Club for the great food and atmosphere provided by the always happy Cooma Catering team headed by Alex Harvey. Come for the food, stay for the friendly faces. The Cooma Ex-Services Club is an important part of our local community, and the delicious food provided by Cooma Catering is one of its biggest attractions. The main man responsible for this is Alex Harvey, who has recently stepped up to take on the operation by himself. Passionate about food, Alex has worked in kitchens since the age of 14. When one of his mates working at the Marlborough Motel got sick, Alex offered to fill in for him and has never looked back. Getting g his apprenticeship at the Cooma Hotel and d working in a Chinese e restaurant as well ass the Alpine Hotel, Alexx has plenty of locall experience under his toque blanche (chef hat). In partnership with Rob and Kay Webel, Alex launched A&R Catering in March of 2012, moving into the Club kitchen just before the big renovations took place. The renovations created a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and with h a new menu, Alex and d the team have made de sure that the Club is one ne of the best places to go for a meal in town. In fact, act, as Alex says, the Club is a great spot for a night out. “There’s always something happening,” Alex says, “People can come in for the raffles, there’s often entertainment like a band or karaoke, and big giveaways like cars and holidays. The meals are huge and the drinks are cheap; it really is the place to be.” If you’re a bit of a sweet tooth, you’ll be excited about Alex’s future plan for the menu. Alex wants to

put more of a focus on desserts, making the club a great place to end your night. With his Certificate 3 in Patisserie, there are sure to be some delicious treats up on the menu board soon. For Alex, the Cooma Ex-Services Club feels like home. His grandfather ho Titch worked at the Club Tit for over 20 years, and sat fo on the board of directors for fo many years after that. Alex’s grandmother Sylvia A worked in the kitchen, w and his father Peter has a also worked at the Club, a making Alex the third generation of Harveys to roam the kitchens. With his 11 year old W son Jack waiting in the wings, Alex hopes to make it four. Alex says the most challenging part of c his job is the hours. h “Having to work “H weekends means time w away from my family, aw which can be hard,” he wh says, say ys “But apart from that, that t I love everything else about abo o being a chef. I love the creativity and the rush you get on a busy night of service. I also really love the community lov here. You get to know h the t regulars really well, and a everyone is always happy to stop for a chat.” It’s not just the customers that Alex has cus a good relationship with with. He and his team of about 15 staff members get on like a house on fire. “I have a really great team. Without them, this just simply wouldn’t be possible,” he says, “We all work really well together, and we have a good laugh while we’re at it.” Alex said they are also keen to take on more functions, so for your next birthday, anniversary, wedding or reunion, think of Cooma Catering and give Alex a call on 6452 1144.

Spend your winter in country comforts at Reynella With 6000 acres of beautiful Snowy Mountain country to explore, you’ll get the true Man from Snowy River experience at Reynella. John Rudd and his wife Roslyn have been operating Reynella for the last 44 years. Their wealth of experience when it comes to farming, horses and everything Snowy Mountains will give you an insight into life in our beautiful region. An important safety device in the snow by Chrissi Webb “A personal locator beacon is the important safety device to carry in the mountains. It can make the difference between life and death” strongly advised Police NSW Monaro Regional Commander, Superintendent Rod Smith when interviewed by The SnowPost. There are several ways by which Police NSW can be notified of the need for a search and rescue by: 1) Activating a personal locator beacon which will indicate to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, the Global Positioning System (GPS) reference. The reference defining accurately the search area is then passed to Police NSW who are then in a position to make a faster response and rescue. 2) Dialing the 000 number. There are

many black spots in the Snowy Mountains rendering the mobile phone useless. 3) Reporting to the local police unit or the National Parks & Wildlife Service. Search procedures are commenced once a report concerning a missing person or a late arrival is received by Police NSW. The various scenarios are then considered such as “is the individual safe somewhere else?” If the person’s behaviour is not normal or there are other factors involved, then search receives immediate attention and begins at the earliest opportunity. Police NSW is the primary agency for land and sea searches. It then contacts the secondary agencies such as the National Parks & Wildlife Service, State Emergency Services, NSW Ambulance, Fire and Rescue, and other organisations such as Ski Patrol and resort personnel

depending on the nature of the search. The next step is for the police to coordinate the search with the resources available. The Monaro local area Alpine Operations Unit has a number of police being trained and equipped to stay out in poor conditions whilst undertaking lengthy searches in the mountains. Avalanche probes and ropes are included in the equipment. Snowmobiles are the principal form of oversnow transport, often assisted by the Police Aero Wing or other helicopter services. The officers are trained in coordinated searches using GPS tracking devices. Dogs are used during summer searches however, in winter the animals have difficulty in the snow. Snowy Mountain searches over the last five years have all come to a conclusion, with one exception being the one for a Canadian bushwalker, who left his vehicle at Charlotte

Pass never to be seen again despite massive searches. There is a 99 percent result from searches however, there are cases where the unfortunate person suffered through misadventure, fatal injuries or is found dead. Superintendent Smith stressed that the Personal Locator Beacon is the most effective safety device one can carry in the mountains. It gives an immediate position of the location of the person in need. These beacons can be hired free of charge although a deposit is required, from the NPWS office in Perisher Valley or the Snowy Region Visitor Centre in Jindabyne. The beacon can also be purchased at a relatively low cost from a retail outlet.

Wake up and smell the truffles Winter time, normally the focus in the region is on snow, but at Macenmist Black Truffles and Wines thoughts turn to clear starry nights that herald the dawn frosts. Underground the subsoil temperatures are dropping and the black diamonds are beginning to ripen. The harvesting of one of the world’s most expensive edible commodities is about to begin. The black truffle (tuber melanosporum) aroma, second only to the European white truffle, is being sniffed out by Macenmist’s dedicated truffle dog Fahren. It’s her olfactory power that leads Barbara to ripe truffle ready to be unearthed, cleaned and dispatched to truffle lovers. In times gone by truffles were harvested by pigs. Their love of truffle meant they needed little or no training. Truffle hunters that used pigs had to be careful not to lose the truffle to an over-zealous sow, hence the use of dogs grew as the preferred method of harvest. Another little known method of truffle harvesting is “fly watching it is used by a minority and requires lots of patience and good eyesight as the tiny red fly, that lays its eggs next to the truffle, is very hard to distinguish. In 2008, after two years research Macenmist

planted its first lot of trees. This was followed in 2012 with a second plantation after the discovery of three ripe truffles the previous year. When the ripe truffles were first found at Macenmist, Fahren was not part of the equation. We needed to do some speedy investigative work to find the right dog for the task and were lucky to source a litter of Lagotto Romagnolo, the Italian truffle dog bought back from virtual extinction in the 19th century by the truffle hunters. Macenmist now had a truffle dog in training. The eight-week old pup took to the aroma with gusto and a year later she is showing the public just how well she can work. Today, Fahren travels widely to many truffle plantations, where she demonstrates her skills and pinpoints truffle locations. To assist Fahren in her ever expanding task is a new Lagotto who will join the team towards the end of this truffle season. During the winter months you can join the hunt for the elusive black fungi, enjoy a walk through the beautiful Macenmist forest of Oak and Hazelnuts with Barbara, Richard and their dedicated truffle dog Fahren who just loves the heady truffle aroma.

Brunelli’s coffee special blend The owners of Brunelli’s CafĂŠ in Perisher have started their own Australian made blend of coffee available in pods that are compatible with Nespresso machines. One of the main focuses for owners Bruno and Roberta Borsato was sustainability. The packaging of the pods is also Australian made and is completely recyclable. “You can also use the left over coffee in the pod as a compost,â€? says Roberta. “Our blend is pure

and clean tasting with no additives. Coffee has become the family business. Bruno is an Italian ski instructor and he and Roberta moved to Perisher in 1983. Their son Stefan is also part of the family business, helping with the design and production of their exciting new pods of coffee.

This Winter, Get the Guide During winter our mountain villages grow exponentially as tens of thousands of people descend on the Kosciuszko Ranges to work and play. We love our home, and we hope our visitors do too. That’s why Snowy River Shire Council produces the Little Black Book. It’s a survival guide linking residents, winter staff and visitors to helpful information, local resources and support services. This year, The Little Black Book is partnering with the JindyGuide app. The JindyGuide is an independent community initiative, which links you quickly to food, accommodation, shopping, transport, events and more in our area. Together, the Little Black Book and JindyGuide provide access to all the information you need at the click of a button. Download the JindyGuide app for free from

Google Play or the iTunes Store, or visit www.jindyguide.com. From there, you can access the 2015 Little Black Book. Or visit www. snowyblackbook.com. “I encourage local businesses to ensure staff are aware of these resources, and ask that they help the Council promote them through staff training and human resource initiatives that integrate visiting workers into the community during their stay. Download the PDF for your staff or advise them to visit the website or download the app. The guides are also useful for all residents. Take a look.” said Joe Vescio, Snowy River Shire Council General Manager. Council encourages local business and support agencies to update their information on these sites prior to winter by emailing LittleBlackBook@ snowyriver.nsw.gov.au or visit www.jindyguide.com.

Department pleased with trout fishermen compliance A six week high profile compliance operation targeting hundreds of trout fishers in the State’s Snowy Mountains g has found the majority of anglers are doing the right thing, Department of Primary Industries Supervising Fisheries Officer, Peter Tilbrook, said. “DPI Fisheries officers and NSW Police and Roads & MarItime Services (RMS) boating safety officers inspected almost 700 recreational anglers as part of Operation DPI India 15 from May 1 to June 9, Mr Tilbrook said. “The operation including both covert and overt surveillance measures, focussed on o patrolling the Eucumbene and Thredbo Rivers in the Snowy Mountains to checkk compliance during the annual Troutt Spawning Stream closure period. o “The Snowy Mountains is home to n the biggest and best brown trout run in e Australia and this year was probably the o best ever, and many anglers travelled to o the local rivers to try their luck, mostly to undertake catch and release fishing. “The closure period is in place from 1 d May to the end of the June long weekend g and provides protection for early spawning e brown trout and a reduced bag limit of one m trout per person per day with a minimum size of 50cms and a total possession limit of two applied. “All fish checked and measured during the operation were all legal size, with no

fish of prohibited size being seized which indicated it was predominantly large fish involved in the spawning run. We also conducted “We

more than 130 vehicle searches looking for illegal catches. “It was pleasing to see such a high rate of compliance among fishers with 90%

abiding by the rules to help protect our fisheries resources for future generations. This spawning closure period for anglers in the th Snowy Mountains occurs earlier than for the rest of NSW due to early spaw spawning brown trout. Th The spawning stream rules apply to the Thredbo River and its tributaries and the Eucumbene River and its tributaries (up (upstream of the Lake Eucumbene dam wal wall and including Providence Portal). ““The restrictions also provide fish fishers with the opportunity to catch a trophy sized trout – in particular the Eucumbene River has provided ex excellent fishing for large brown trout ov over the past few years, Mr Tilbrook sa said. Anglers are reminded that fishing is now prohibited in all designated tr trout rivers and streams throughout N NSW and the season reopens on the S Saturday of the October long w weekend. Anglers can continue tto enjoy their fishing in trout d dams which remain open to ffishing all year. A number of people were iissued written cautions and penalt penalty notices under the Fisheries legislation for a range of offences including taking or possessing more than the bag limit of fish, either not purchasing or carrying their
