Yarrangobilly Caves is Kosciuszko National Park’s Best Kept Secret

Autumn is the best season to visit with trees changing with the precinct transforming into a beautiful display of colourful leaves. There is so much to see at Yarrangobilly with one day never being enough. The historic Caves House has been beautifully restored and hosts comfortable accommodation in either self-contained or lodge style settings. A trip to Yarrangobilly Caves is a must do while visiting the Snowy Mountains. Hidden in the northern end of Kosciuszko National Park, the Yarrangobilly precinct has plenty for the whole family to enjoy. Everyday there are three exceptionally unique caves open to view as well as beautiful walking tracks and a soothing warm thermal pool. Visitors have the option of wandering through the self-guided South Glory Cave or take a guided tour of the Jersey Cave which runs twice daily at 10.30am and 2pm. The stunning Jillabenan Cave is the easiest option with wheelchair accessibility with the tour starts at either 12pm or 3.30pm every day. Yarrangobilly has exciting discovery tours operating on weekends and during busy periods. These tours have limited spaces and can fill up quickly so bookings are recommended. These caves do not have electric lighting and so each visitor is provided with their own light to explore underground world. To access these caves guests walk along the picturesque Yarrangobilly River valley which is itself worth a look. Both the Castle and Harrie Wood caves host some of the most amazing crystal formations you will ever see. Either of these tours take approximately 2 hours and have limited numbers so we recommend booking. Upcoming Castle & Harrie Wood dates: Saturday 23rd March, Friday 19th April, Monday 22nd April and Saturday 11th May. Nature Play is a great experience for

children aged from 4 – 12 years. The morning Bug Hunt has the children exploring outside and searching for evidence of the fascinating insect world. Then in the afternoon, Lil Caves for Lil Kids has the kids crawling, climbing and challenging them physically in some smaller caves. It really is a great day out with each session costing $15.00 per child. The programs are run at the same time as the Jersey Cave tour so parents can drop the kids off and enjoy a guided tour if they choose. Upcoming Nature Play dates are Saturday 9th March, Saturday 30th March. Saturday 13th April, Saturday 20th April and Saturday 4th May. If you are up for more of a challenge then Adventure caving is for you. You can enter the world of wild caving with experienced guides at Yarrangobilly. The River Odyssey trip is a great introduction with climbing, crawling, river rock hopping, and water filled passages. You are provided with a helmet, a headtorch, overalls and knee pads then you set off for an underground adventure that takes at least 3 hours. Caving can become addictive so if you can’t get enough then try the Mill Creek Swallet trip. This cave will test your stamina with knee bruising commando crawls and serpentine chimney climbs. This is not a cave for the faint hearted. Both tours require good footwear and a reasonable fitness level. Upcoming Adventure Cave dates: Saturday 16th March, Sunday April 14th and Sunday 26th May.

If wineries and breweries aren’t your style and you want to experience a bit of the Snowy Mountains Heritage then the Cooma Historic Tour is the one for you. Picking you up from your front door the tour takes you on a journey through how the region began, starting with a tour of the Snowy Hydro Discovery centre where you will learn all about the Snowy Scheme. Grab a coffee from the café as the tour moves on to have a look at life behind bars, visiting the corrective services museum in Cooma where you get to experience firsthand what goes on inside the gaol. For a true unique experience a minimum security inmate will be your guide. Then heading to Miss Heidi’s Austrian Teahouse for lunch this funky style teahouse is a sight to see indeed, set amongst the outdoors, while the menu caters for even the fussiest eaters. All tours involve pick up and drop off to your front door and to make for a more personalised memorable experience the itinerary can be altered and adjusted for private tours upon request. Good Things come in small packages... As Easter draws near Jindabyne Lake Light Sculpture artists and organisers are planning for another spectacular year of unique and inspiring pieces to be showcased in the event. Now in its 17th year, the Jindabyne Lake Light Sculpture has captured the interest from many people around the country, drawing not only the locals who have wandered the path of the lake foreshore many times but also the many visitors to the area who partake in this magnificent yearly event. The good-time Lake Light Sculpture event that weaves its way around the foreshore of Lake Jindabyne over the Easter long weekend each year has a new offering – a Smalls Exhibition. This component of the event has been rekindled and offers artists an opportunity to exhibit and sell items that are deemed small. “They may be small in stature but will leave a big impression,” says artistic director and local art teacher Ben Eyles. “This will appeal to artists who work in glass, delicate or fragile materials that can’t bear the wear and tear of an outdoor sculpture exhibition. “Sculptures that can sit comfortably on a plinth will loosely meet the criteria and this will allow many of our traditional and long-term exhibiting artists to enter another category,” said Mr Eyles. The event will be held in the foyer of Rydge’s Snowy Mountains in Jindabyne and will also run over the four days of the event from April 19-22. There will be a major prize of $2000 for the winner along with a People’s Choice Award voted by the public. Artists are encouraged to enter this category by March 15 and can do so by hopping onto the event website, lakelightsculpture.com.au, to fill out the newly minted online entry form. Entry is $40 for a single entry and $80 for multiple entries regardless of which exhibition or combination of the two. Professional, experienced and emerging artists, tradies and community groups are invited to exhibit in both the Smalls and the outdoor exhibitions. The exhibitions will be judged by an expert panel with major awards for the outdoor exhibition offered in categories including Illumination, Environment, Youth and People’s Choice. A sculpture residency at the Australian National University will also be up for grabs. Historic Snowy 2.0 plan approved

The Government has approved Snowy 2.0 as part of its plan to support new renewable energy for Australia’s future energy mix to deliver affordable, reliable power. The historic deal will see a high-tech expansion of the iconic Snowy Mountains Scheme and will help make renewables reliable, reduce volatility and drive affordability in energy markets and provide other services critical to the security and stability of the NEM. The Government is pleased to announce shareholder approval has been given for Snowy Hydro Limited (Snowy Hydro) to proceed with Snowy 2.0. Following Snowy Hydro Board’s final investment decision on December 12, 2018, the Government has reviewed the project’s business case and is satisfied that the project stacks up and will benefit energy consumers and the Snowy Mountains region.

The Government will commit up to $1.38 billion in an equity investment for Snowy 2.0, with the remainder of the project to be financed by Snowy Hydro Limited. Snowy 2.0 will increase generation capacity by 2,000 megawatts and provide 175 hours of energy storage - enough to power the equivalent of 500,000 homes during peak demand. Importantly, this will also put downward pressure on wholesale electricity prices. Snowy 2.0 will create up to 2,400 jobs in construction and support up to 5,000 direct and indirect jobs across the Snowy Mountains region, providing opportunities for local businesses, improvements in local infrastructure and increased economic activity. Planning for the Snowy 2.0 project is well advanced. The Government’s decision green lights the project to progress to the early works stage. This decision builds on the our investment in

Snowy Hydro following the acquisition from the NSW and Victorian governments on 29 June 2018 and our work to back electricity supplies in Tasmania and Victoria with a new $56 million investment in the Marinus Link to support Tasmania’s Battery of the Nation project. Snowy Hydro CEO Paul, Broad has welcomed the announcement. “Today, after almost two years of rigorous engineering, financial and market modelling, we’re excited to embark on a new chapter. “Snowy 2.0, along with the mighty Snowy Scheme, will underpin Australia’s renewable energy future for generations to come. With more intermittent generation coming online Snowy Hydro will play an increasingly critical role to keep the lights on. “Snowy Hydro is the fourth-largest energy player in the NEM, we increase competition to help drive better outcomes for consumers”.

As the Easter Holidays are fast approaching so is the annual Jindabyne Lions Club 2019 Easter Art Show and Sale. This year the school holidays and Easter and ANZAC Day all fall in the same period so an extra busy time is expected. Presenting Art with Altitude in the Snowy Mountains for over 15 years now the Lions Club are proud to be hosting yet another great event full of magnificent pieces created by the hands of talented artists from the local and surrounding area. Each year, the quality and variety

of the artworks exceed expectations as each unique piece fits into its own category. The feedback from artists already is that many new pieces are underway for this year’s events. School and preschool involvement is always huge and this year is looking even more exciting with a great number of art students from Snowy Mountains Grammar School and Jindabyne Central

School refining their talents on pieces to put on show. Gidgilly’s has been a major winner in past years. Art teachers, Ben Eyles from Jindabyne Central School (JCS) and Katie Witherdin from Snowy Mountains Grammar School are pushing the future generations of artists by encouraging their students to participate in this great event. “I feel it is a great opportunity for

students who are interested in art to display their work in public. “This can be intimidating and scary for some, but it is an important step for students who may see art as a career path, or merely are passionate about art.” said Mr Eyles. Continued on page 12...

Ben, who is a very imaginative and talented artist in his own right, explains that by displaying his own art and showing by example, students are encouraged to display their own pieces. Having won awards in the past for his sculpturing, where he created a dragonfly out of old brass bug sprayer in a Duchamp style piece titled ‘Ironic Insect’ and winning an award for his Japanese Daruma print series, he is especially proud of his students for putting aside their apprehensions and participating. “One of the most impressive young artists at JCS, is Baili Pendergast (yr 11). “Her drawings and paintings are exceptional and

have won her awards in the past. Those who know Baili, agree she could do well in the art world. Senior student, Callum Rynehart (yr12) has produced some great photographic works as well, winning the junior photograph prize in the past.” Jindabyne’s community is involved in events such as skiing, mountain biking, road cycling, fishing, water sports. The annual Easter Art Show and Sale along with Lake Light Sculpture are major showcases for our local art and cultural sector offering a balance between sport and culture. Business and community applaud the tremendous efforts the Jindabyne Lions Club, led by committee member Terry Chalk, who work for months leading up

to this event to ensure the show is ready for the Easter break. Jindabyne on the Airbnb Top 10 Destination List in Australia Jindabyne has made the list released by Airbnb as one of the top 10 trending destinations in Australia for 2019. Ranked as number eight out of 10 for Airbnbâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most popular destinations Jindabyne had seen a massive 166 per cent increase in bookings based on bookings made on Airbnb during 2017 and 2018. 2018 saw a really strong growth in Airbnb listings as a massive 550 new active listers joined Airbnb, specifically in the Jindabyne area, during 2018 leading into the first week of 2019. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is no wonder that Jindabyne has become such a popular destination spot for tourists because of the snow, the lake, the mountain biking, the schnapps distillery, trout hatchery and many more attractions in this picturesque townâ&#x20AC;?, said Airbnb spokesperson, Sam McDonagh. We’re gearing up, so step into your cowboy boots for the 2019 Man From Snowy River Bush Festival! MFSR2019 will mark 24 years since the beginning of this great Festival and by all accounts is set to be the biggest Festival yet. The Man From Snowy River Bush Festival is a diverse four-day Festival show casing all things Australian Bush Heritage, in direct relation to Banjo Paterson’s iconic poem. It features events and activities to suit all ages with the iconic MFSR Challenge being the main attraction, where 72 of the country’s highest calibre of riders come together to compete for the ultimate title of ‘The Man From Snowy River’. The festival recreates A. B. ‘Banjo’ Patterson’s Man From Snowy River poem in a live re- enactment, with crowds watching ‘in very fear’ as our mountain horsemen take on the steep and winding mountains in pursuit of the colt that got away.

Our own Breanna Arnold will be one of a handful of locals including her own father, Ian, who will be heading down to Victoria in April to compete in the Man from Snowy River Festivals iconic MFSR challenge. The festival re-enacts A B ‘Banjo’ Paterson’s iconic poem through a number of events and competitions, with the challenge being the main event. Having loved riding and being around horses since she was a young girl, Bree is no less excited for this year’s challenge than when she first competed in the Juniors challenge three years ago. Now turned 18, she will be competing in the Ladies division for the first time at Corryong. “I remember when I was little, seeing dad and the other riders competing and thinking ‘I could never do that’ so it’s really special to be able to get involved.”

Top riders travel from across the country to compete for the coveted title of ‘The Man from Snowy River.’ To make it through to the finals, challengers will need to compete across six different phases; Stockhandling, Pack horse, Whip-Crack, Bareback, Horseshoeing and Cross country. The finalists will move on to compete in the Brumby catch and Stocksaddle Buckjump. “It’s a big event and brings in the best competitors from around the country” Bree said, “the level of talent on display is really impressive” Bree and her uncle’s horse, an Australian stock horse named ‘Grady’s Diamond’ have begun preparing for the competition, giving themselves a good six weeks to get ready. “A lot of people don’t realise the amount of work involved in preparing for the challenge” Bree explained.

“It’s not as easy as the riders make it look.” Her own horse ‘Snowdrop’ will be sitting out this year as she is recovering from an injury. She will however be taking part in the pack horse event in which a second horse is required. The Man from Snowy River bush festival will be held in Corryong Victoria from April 4 -7 with the MFSR challenge taking place on April 5 and 6. The festival will also feature many additional events and competitions including: A ute muster, whip cracking competition, Aussie bush idol and much more. Berridale Easter Fair celebrates its 40th birthday It’s a special year for the Berridale Easter Fair, celebrating its 40th birthday. The Berridale Lions Club are pulling out all the stops to make this years fair better than ever. Kicking off at 9am, the kids can get straight on the jumping castle to burn off the energy from that Easter egg they ate early that morning. They can also head to the petting zoo to cuddle up with some cute farm animals. There will be plenty of market stalls at the fair with beautiful and unique handmade items, plants, interesting information and much more for you to look at. There will of course be the smell of a delicious Aussie barbecue in the air. Grab yourself a bacon and egg roll for breakfast from the Berridale Lions Club van. It’s for a great cause, with the money going back into the community through the Lions Club work. One of the more recent Lions Club projects has been the donation of raised garden beds to the local aged care facility, the Snowy River Hostel. These beds allow the residents, who are mostly rural people, to exercise their green thumbs without having to bend over. The Rural Fire Service will have their fire truck there

for the kids to climb through. The RFS also organise some fun games for the kids. Placing some chocolate eggs on top of witches hats, the kids can have a go at knocking them off with a knapsack spray pump. Successfully knock it off, and you get to keep the egg. There will also be a smoke house on display. The Cooma Car Club will be there with plenty of rare vintage and classic cars on display. There will also be a heavy machinery display and a silent firewood auction. Of course, it couldn’t be an Easter Fair without a good old Easter egg scramble. Right next to the Berridale Lions Park is the historical Aitchison Cottage, which will be open for the public. The cottage demonstrates Berridale’s development in the late 19th century and dwelling requirements of that era. Its building materials, including rat trap bond brick walls, are particularly significant demonstrating the evolution of material use from early settlement till the 1950s. So come along to the Berridale Easter Fair and join in the fun of the 40th anniversary celebration. There’s something for the whole family. Jindabyne local entering the Easter Art Show 2019 Jindabyne artist, Sue Edmondson, started painting in 1994 after moving to Jindabyne. Her passion for painting started after previously working in ceramics for 10 years.

“I felt I had used my creative output in the two houses and gardens we (along with husband, Pat Edmondson) had built”, Sue said. “We used earth, rock and milled our own timber, the landscape was always important to me and created beautiful surroundings.” Sue showcases her art work in the Easter Art Show every year for the past few years and has won many awards and sold many pieces. Her artwork is often hung on the walls of Kettle and Seed Café in Cooma as well as the Raglan Gallery in Cooma. Sue enjoys spending her down time in her granny flat studio underneath her house, with paint brushes, easles and colours spread around her, letting the inspiration form on a canvas. Starting with traditional watercolours Sue broadened her skills by attending many workshops which found her using oil, pastels and mixed media to put together something on a surface to create a masterpiece. Most of her art pieces are based around landscapes or portraits and

through her work she tries to give an impression and feeling for where she has been. “I love being in the bush especially the mountains and camping with a tent, ski touring and walking, I also love the isolated beaches of the south coast”, Sue explained, regarding what gives her inspiration when creating a new piece of work. Sue has won several prizes over the last five years in Jindabyne, Cooma and Canberra as well as winning the prestigious John Briscoe prize at Cooma worth $2,000. In January 2013, she took home the win for best watercolour artwork in the Lions Cooma showing and again in 2015 winning the Jindabyne best oil painting and best painting in the show at the Easter Lions Art Show. As an active member in the Monaro Art Group, Canberra Art Society and Jindabyne Art Group Sue is busy in her studio which is open to the public and urges anyone interested in her art to contact her to make an appointment for viewing, 02 6457 1350.

Cooma Car Club turns 20

The Cooma Monaro Historic Automobile Club came into being following the closure of the Cooma Auto Racing Club which held stock car races at the Alpine Speedway on Mittagong Road Cooma during the mid to late 1960’s. A Monaro Chapter of the Classic and Historic Automobile Club of Australia was formed with a Club charter for the restoration and preservation of classic cars that were manufactured post 1945 and at least 25 years old. Which meant that the vehicles that had been striped for stock cars were now the type to be restored. When the NSW RTA adopted a proposal for a classification of historic vehicles to be registered in NSW this prompted the Monaro Chapter of the CHACA to form a separate club in Cooma and the first club meeting was held in April 1999 at the Australian Hotel. Soon after the club meetings were moved to the Royal Hotel. The first event promoted by the new club was the Cooma Motorfest in November of that year. The Motorfest held every two years has grown to be a major event on the classic car calendar drawing around 300 vehicles from all states on the eastern sea board. The 2019 Motorfest will be held on November 2 and 3. Various names were discussed for the new club and in June 2002 the name Cooma Monaro Historic Automobile Club was adopted and the Club was incorporated. In October 2002 there was the first discussion in relation to obtaining club premises and a building fund with $100 was established in September 2003. In July 2006 it was moved that a small committee be formed to investigate possibilities of land. It took to February 2007 to be implemented and this was the year that the club moved to the Cooma Bowling Club as they had out grown the facilities at the Royal Hotel after nine years. However the purchase of land or a tin shed seemed out of bounds with no fewer than four sites investigated In 2009 the current Car Club site came on to the market and the club advised the CMSC that they would obtain a long term lease if the Council purchased the building but they declined the purchase which turned out to be a good decision as the Club had to do something. So, in November 2009 a decision to purchase the present

building was made and to seek a bank loan. In December 2009 a deposit was paid with settlement in January 2010 with the first meeting in the building on March 31 that year. The original complex was the initiative of a local citizen and was used as a gymnasium and indoor cricket. Massive fundraising was necessary and included debentures being offered to Club members to assist with offsetting the loan interest and various fund raising events were held over the next few years. The first work on the building was in the front section being the gym with two amenity blocks, they were removed and replaced and a bar and commercial kitchen installed to be able to lease out this section to provide some income and meeting space. Income for the Club is from the use of this space for various functions and meetings. Additional funds are also raised from marquee tent hire for weddings, parties and gatherings. The downstairs section was just a tin shed and working bees commenced to strip it out and to line and insulate the walls and ceiling. A grant from Destinations NSW, an initiative of the NSW Government to improve bed nights in local areas, was obtained for the purchase of the materials and club members provided the labour to insulate the walls and this left adequate finances to engage a local building firm to complete the renovation of the ceiling areas in both sections of the building This area is to be set up as a museum display for member’s vehicles. The additional bed nights have been established by the number of events that the Club runs which brings people into town. That original seed money of $100 back in 2003 has paid off with the final payment on the loan being made in October 2015. Classic Cars and motor cycles are the common interest of members and popular Club activities include day trips with three day and longer tours organised. These have included Tasmania, the Great Ocean Road and through NSW. Closer to home Yallambee residents enjoy being

driven by club members during Spring and Autumn. On one of these outings on arrival at Nanny Goat hill “one dear old lady remarked how beautiful it is here during the day, I have not been here for years” to which the club driver replied “me neither I have lived in Cooma all my life and only been here at night.” The Club holds various events during each year with the Motorfest and the two day Surf to Summit drawing large numbers of visitors to the town in alternate years. This is in addition to the Girder Falk rally for motorcycles pre 1950 which has been held annually since 1996 with the 2019 event being the 28th time this has been run with the Car Club picking up the rally from the Monaro Tourers Club in 2018. Other events are the billy cart derby, over 50’s two day rally for vehicles over 50 years. All local shows are attended as well as the Berridale Easter and Winter Fair. Club members also assist with various events in the local area with the Back to Cooma Weekend in 2016, Australia Day Breakfast and Relay for Life. Hill climb events recommenced at Mt. Gladstone in 2013 this was 100 years after the first recorded hill climb in the Cooma area and draws around 40 competitors at each event which are held three times a year. The first hill climb was held in 1913 from the Cooma Back Creek up past Flynn’s wrecking yard and on to the present four mile location and was sponsored by the Presbyterian Church. Over the 20 years of operation the Club has provide a total of over $100,000 to various charities including the Cooma Hospital Auxiliary, Community Chest, Monaro Committee for Cancer, Monaro High School student assistance program, Louie Mould Fund and the former South Care helicopter service. Financial support is also provided to local school groups, community groups, halls and the surf lifesaving clubs on the Monaro and South Coast through their provision of catering for the driving events. The Cooma Monaro Historic Automobile Club so named to be inclusive of surrounding towns, has a membership base of 192 as at the end of January this year and in excess of 260 vehicles with the bulk of the members in Cooma, Berridale, Jindabyne and Bombala and others in

Canberra, Queanbeyan, Goulburn, Orange and Sydney. Following the passing of a well known Berridale local and member Don Bottom the Club was left with a healthy legacy and with the addition of a State Government Grant the Don Bottom Memorial Shed was constructed for storage of equipment and vehicles used for the hill climb, general workshop land scaping. This shed now opens the downstairs area for development. The next stage of construction is to refurbish this area area into a motor museum for the display of members vehicles with the addition of a 1960’s style façade of the type of service stations normally found in country towns. Cooma Car Club has gained a reputation for organising and hosting major motoring events such as the Cooma Motorfest, Surf to Summit and Girder Falk rallies. The Club has been approached by various organisations to assist with their events. The Landrover 70th year anniversary committee contacted the Car Club for assistance which resulted in this event being staged in Cooma over the Easter period in 2018. This was the first of a number of celebrations held in various countries where Landrovers had been sold. The Landrover became the work horse during the construction of the Snowy Mountains Scheme. This brought around 970 Landrovers and 2000 people to Cooma for the event. The FX-FJ Holden Club of the ACT have requested the Cooma Car Club to co-host the National gathering of this series of Holden manufactured between November 1948 and June 1956 in Cooma from December 28 2020 to January 1, 2021. This event is held every two years and rotated through the various State organisations and is expected to bring around 200 cars and 500 people to the area between the Christmas and New Year period. Another club to approach the Car Club is the Velocette motorcycle club of Australia for their National gathering in 2023, Velocette motorcycles were manufactured by small family company in Birmingham England from 1904 to 1971 and it is expected that 150 motorcycles will attend.

The annual Adaminaby Easter Fair will be taking place on Saturday April 20

The fair, which has now been going strong for almost 40 years will feature a large variety of stalls, attractions and activities catering to all ages. “It’s a great day for the whole family to enjoy” says Snowy scheme president, member of the chambers of commerce and Adaminaby local Tim Corkill. Tim has been helping to organise the fair for the past 15 years and having seen the event grow each year, claims that this year’s fair will be one of the biggest yet. “We’ve got some 60 odd market stalls this year. A decade ago it was only around a dozen.” Aside from the large number of stalls which will be showcasing a variety of goods and services on offer in Adaminaby, the fair will also feature all sorts of games and activities which are sure to bring laughs and good times for all ages.

This year’s fair celebrates the year of the pig in the Chinese Zodiac and will have a number of pig related activities including a pig squeal competition. Other activities include: Trout tossing, boot tossing, pie eating, watermelon eating, tug of war, a dog high jump, the famous whacky quacky duck race and much more. Locals and visitors of the Snowy Mountains region are invited to help celebrate Steve Williamson’s 30th Anniversary by attending a social fishing weekend over April 5-7, 2019. This will be a weekend to get together to celebrate 30 years of ‘Lake Jindabyne Trout Fishing Adventures’ and Steve Williamson’s achievements over that time. A huge weekend packed full of competitions, prizes, barbecues and much more, it gives another reason for the locals and all others to gather to celebrate this special moment for Steve and his business. “I would like all my friends in the Snowy Mountains to come and celebrate the weekend, even if they do not enter the fishing competition”, Steve said. With three sausage sizzles over the entirety of the weekend being held at Discovery Holiday Park barbecue area there will also be a ‘Buy, Sell and Sway’ meet hosted by Trout Trollers Australia that will be open to the public on the Saturday. The weekend kicks off on Friday evening with competition registration and barbecue from 5pm to 8pm, registrations take place at Lakeside Bait and Tackle. All registered participants will receive a free ‘Steve Williamson’s 30th Anniversary Limited Edition Tasmanian Devil Lure’, this lure is your competition pass. After the Buy, Sell and Swap markets on Saturday come along for the auction held for donated items with all proceeds going towards the charity ‘Steve Williamson Children Academy’ beginning at 8pm. The fishing competition closes Sunday with all entries ending at 11am, followed by a barbecue lunch where the competition winners will be announced at 1pm. All are welcome to attend any of these events and come and say hi! Steve, originally from Sydney, first visited the Snowy Mountains to see the snow in the early 70’s and fell in love with the area. “Loved what I saw that winter and came back to the Snowies the following summer,

staying at Lake Eucumbene, where I had my first trout fishing experience,” Steve said. Steve couldn’t resist returning the following winter to try out the snow sports and fell in love with skiing. He and a mate decided to go halves in an on-site caravan in Jindabyne and each year from then spent many winters skiing and made regular visits in summer to trout fish when he finally decided in 1989 it was time to make the move from Sydney to Jindabyne permanently. With the move came the start of his business, Lake Jindabyne Trout Fishing Adventures, which was to become the very first fully registered and licensed inland fishing charter boat business in Australia. Well known Australian and world icons have attended Steve’s Fly Fishing lessons and adventures in the past years including past world boxing champion, Kostya Tszyu and world surfing champion, Kelly Slater. Steve had a storefront for his business also selling many fishing products and services to the area, but last year Steve sold his tackle shop which he had owned for the past 15 years and has since semi-retired. His Tackle shop was the runner up to the Best Small Tackle Shops in Australia in 2017, held by the Australian Fishing Trades Association. Amongst many other awards, Lake Jindabyne Trout Fishing adventures have won 1996 and 1997 Overall winner ‘Exceptional Service Award, 1999 Snowy Mountains ‘Distinction’ Excellence in Tourism award, 2000 Snowy Mountains WINNER of ‘Adventure’ category Excellence in Tourism, 2001 Australian Micro Established Business of the Year award and many more. “Over the 30 years of business I have been working up to 70 hours per week and since I started up the ‘Steve Williamson’s Tackle Shop 15 years ago it has been a seven-day a week job”, he said Steve. Steve explains that though he still loves his business and trout fishing it is time to

30th anniversary celebrations spend more time with family and friends. Though Steve has not completely retired from his Lake Jindabyne Trout Fishing Adventures businesses he has many people to thank for the many years of success he has had so far. “Thank you to my family, especially my wife Christine, for allowing me to drag them away from Sydney to the Snowy Mountains for the start of a new life,” says Steve. “I would also like to thank my friends, that also assisted me in the early days, the many clients that have returned many times over and have helped make the business a success.” Steve would also like to acknowledge his long time sponsors – Wigstons Tasmanian

Rare Mountain Pygmy possum saved and returned home By ELENA GUARRACINO A young endangered Mountain Pygmy possum is very lucky to be alive, thanks to the sharp eye of a hiker in the Kosciuszko National Park and efforts of local wildlife group LAOKO (Looking Aftzer Our Kosciuszko Orphans – Snowy Mountains Rescue). The tiny possum was found in a very poor state, covered with ants, near the Thredbo chair lift, during a bout of hot weather in January. A hiker spotted the possum, which could easily be mistaken for a mouse, on the Main Track and handed it to National Parks and Wildlife rangers. The juvenile female possum, estimated to be about two or three months old was given to an experienced LAOKO carer Susie Cooper, who said the Pygmy possum was just alive when it was rescued. “It was severely dehydrated and malnourished,” Ms Cooper said. Under Ms Cooper’s expert care the Pygmy possum rapidly doubled in weight and became quite robust. Ms Cooper said the possum was fed a special Pygmy possum milk formula until it was rehydrated and strong and also given nuts, fruit and insects. Adult Mountain Pygmy possums weigh about 40 to 80 grams and live between one and 12 years, measuring about 28cm, including a curled 16cm tail. They are omnivorous, feeding on the Mountain Plum pine and various insects, including Bogong moths. The LAOKO carer sought the advice of experts for the Mountain Pygmy possum. “They have to be kept cool, below 25 degrees, and provided with a simulated tunnel to hide in,” Ms Cooper said. “She is very resilient and easy to look after, and she bites,” Ms Cooper added. After two weeks in care, the possum was released

back to the area near where it was found in boulder fields at South Rams Head, with the assistance of National Parks and Wildlife staff. It is likely the rescued Pygmy possum was victim to the crash in the numbers of Bogong moths which migrate every summer to the Kosciuszko National Park. In summer Bogong moths make up about 25 per cent of the Mountain Pygmy possums’ diet, supplemented by the Mountain Plum Pine fruit and other plants. Bogong moths are very rich in protein and fat, enabling the possums to increase their body fat reserves before winter. Over winter the Mountain Pygmy-possum hibernates, living off its stored body fat and awakening occasionally to feed on seeds stockpiled nearby. Bogong Moths are an extremely important component of their diet, allowing Mountain Pygmypossums to survive the cold, harsh winter. The moths hide in caves and cracks in alpine areas, where they rest, going into a torpor state (aestivation) during the summer months, before returning to northern NSW to breed. Alpine ecologist at the Australian National University, Dr Ken Green believes that climate change and recent droughts in areas where the Bogong moths breed in grasslands in northern New South Wales and southern Queensland, are the cause of the crash in moth numbers. “Ian Commons (CSIRO) and I have been looking at Bogong moths for a combined period of 70 years. Between the two of us we have been researching Bogong moths since 1951,” Dr Green said. Dr Green said he has never seen it like this before, and for the second year in a row young Pygmy possums have been dropped out of the pouch by female Mountain Pygmy possums, and found dead

in their mothers’ pouches. Dr Green said at a site at South Rams head, in Kosciuszko National Park, Mountain Pygmy possum habitat, 1,000 moths were found in 2018. “This year only 6 moths were found, and a week ago there were none,” Dr Green said. With a declining total population of less than 500 Mountain Pygmy possum adults in Kosciuszko National Park, this little possum will hopefully go on to breed and help avoid extinction of this remarkable marsupial. 2019, January, I’m pleased to write, did start with me making my annual walk along the Main Range Trail. So beautiful. Later I also managed Mt Townsend for a first! The Main Range walk was one of those hot days, but, a little breeze kept it ‘bearable’. Not only was a breeze blowing, looking west misty, smoky, cloud was highlighting all the mountain ranges between our Main Range and the Victorian High Plains. This was indeed a spectacle. Added to this was, as ‘the icing on the cake’ … mist blowing across, in and around about me, such was the splendour of nature this day. The summer flowers had been in full bloom, they were fading while later bloomers were springing to life. The cycle of vegetation in these highlands is dependent on changing climactic annual activity. Flowers bloom, die off producing seeds, some use winds to spread them, others rely on mountain insects for pollination – nature cares for its own. The cold comes and snow falls, covering plants, later watering them with oxygenated snow melt and nourishment so they bloom again in spring and summer. The Snowy Mountains are full of amazing natural beauty, it takes years to see and appreciate it all. Flowers are but for a season then gone; snow lasts a shorter and shorter time each year; the scorching sun burns the grasses that struggle to grow; nature continues irrespective of any of these conditions. Today we talk so much of ‘climate change’ and ‘global warming’ – I dread the effect, and dangerous state, our world would be in if there were NO changes of any kind. Static would be criminal on our very existence. Since time immemorial our globe has been under constant change, and strangely, it seems to have changed and survived! Where would you like the ‘change’ to cease: Tropical? Freeze? Wet? Cold? Would it work at a static 12 month invariable? However, we do need

to care for our Earth. Ice sheets and bergs began to melt thousands of years ago, say 10 thousand, after the last global ice-age. Did you know there’s been about three ice-ages in the last 100,000 years? Scratch marks were carved on rocks as ice sheets moved over them; some rocks even bear water ripples from times when they were, or near, the ancient seabed. For example, the Gulf of Carpentaria was a large billabong between Queensland and Northern Territory 10 thousand years back; Tasmania was finalising its break from mainland Australia – no Bass Strait; and, nearer to home, many Snowy Mountain landforms are results of glacial activity. Mountain climactic change is evidenced by the presence of moraines – retreating glacier rock deposits – such as Hedley Tarn; and, cirques – the circular landform where a glacier began – as at Blue Lake, both partially visible from Charlottes Pass. Ice and glaciers covered the highest lands and formed the valleys and slopes. Solifluction appears as lineal layering on mountain slopes – this is evidenced along west facing slopes of the Kangaroo Range between Charlottes Pass and toward the Snowy River headwaters. Akin to this are lines of trees on Mt Guthries. Trees in this area look to be in parallel, horizontal, lines. This geological phenomenon, appearing as terracing, is caused by the movement of soils downhill during freezing and thawing. This movement is currently extremely slow [millimetres per year] so may take hundreds of years to become clearly visible – records of some movements have been maintained. The mountains have many secrets that pre-existed before human intervention, science is only beginning to unlock them, there’s great times ahead with mysteries we may never fully understand. Climate change or not, the mountains are by no means ‘static’.

It’s no secret that Australia has a long history of incarceration. The country was colonised for the purposes of turning it into an enormous gaol and whilst we have instead evolved into one of the world’s most prosperous nations, there are still 38 operational prisons in NSW alone, housing over 13,000 prisoners. The Cooma Correctional Services Museum aims to exhibit in detail the long and surprisingly colorful history of the state’s prisons from 1788 right up to the present day. The museum, which is located on Vale Street directly opposite the Cooma Gaol came under the management of current curator Andrew Weglarz four years ago, “I wanted to turn it from a small local museum into a state Museum” he says, “something that’s relevant not only for Cooma but for all of NSW.” In this regard, Andrew seems to be well on his way to realising that goal, with the museum being the only one of its kind in the country to be listed in the Lonely Planet travel guide. Himself an ex prison guard from the UK, Andrew’s old uniform is one of the many exhibits on display. Clearly a project he feels a personal connection to, the museum continues to grow in size and scope. Walking through the main entrance, your journey begins on the deck of a prison transport ship in 1788 and from here you can cruise through over two centuries worth of exhibits, including: A life sized recreation of Russel ‘Mad Dog’ Cox’s daring 1977 escape from Katingal Gaol, the death mask of the

notorious bushranger Captain Moonlite and a scale model of Bathurst prison which was made for the royal inquest into the infamous riots of 1974. Also on display are an array of prison-made weapons which include a makeshift crossbow and a knife hidden in the handle of a ping pong paddle. The extensive collection of historical artefacts and memorabilia which has been sourced from all over the state has been valued at more than $2 million. Sitting right next door to the Cooma correctional centre, the museum has a healthy and philanthropic relationship with the prison. Robert Oldenhoff, a Corrective Services employee, oversees the running of the museum and conducts tours alongside safety-vetted minimum-security inmates. As well as guiding tours, inmates also make clothing, textiles and artwork for purchase at the museum’s gift shop. Robert says that it gives the inmates something productive to do and also teaches them some valuable skills for the outside. Visiting the Cooma Correctional services museum is undoubtedly a one of a kind experience, both enjoyable and educational. The friendly staff are approachable and all too happy to tell you the story behind each exhibit and for a mere gold coin donation for entry, it’s an affordable outing for the whole family. A must-see attraction, not only for Cooma and the Monaro area but for the State of New South Wales.
