Four Snowy Monaro businesses have been recognised for being the best in their field at the 2018 Snowsports Industry of Australia Awards. Thredbo Resort was awarded Australia’s Best Resort for 2018. “We’re stoked to have delivered a jam-packed winter of non-stop action and entertainment filled with powder days, incredible conditions, Australia’s longest runs, massive vertical, snowy village vibes and the biggest and best events and après calendar,â€? Thredbo said. Andy Burford, owner of The Boot Fitter Jindabyne (pictured bottom right), won Best Boot Fitter for the third

year in a row. Andy started fitting ski boots 29 years ago whilst teaching skiing and coaching ski racing. He realised the importance of correctly fitted boots when coaching kids. “I took them down to Jindabyne Sports and had all their equipment checked,� Andy said. “So many kids had boots too big or too stiff. There is a higher risk of injury if boots are too inflexible and it’s an important part of coaching to be proactive with equipment.� Andy has spent a lot of time in ski boots, having done back to back seasons in Australia and North America for 20 years. “The right ski boots are not only more comfortable, but

help you ski better on the hill,� he said. Rhythm Snowsports Cooma has won Best Rental Store for the third time. Owner Mick Klima said Rhythm is constantly improving to make the business run as efficiently as possible. “We want to make the process of renting easier and more consumer friendly,� Mick said. “We’ve got passionate staff who ski and snowboard. They understand consumer needs better than anyone and bring that knowledge to the business.� Rhythm offers a huge variety of ski and snowboard equipment hire, as well as accessories and clothing. “We can give expert advice to

everyone, whether they’re off to the snow for the first time or are intermediate or experts riders,� Mick said. Perisher won the award for the Best Terrain Park for the third consecutive year. “With five Terrain parks, two Rider-Cross courses and Australia’s only Half-Pipe

A big summer ahead at the Thredbo Mountain Bike Park

The Thredbo Mountain Bike Park is Australia’s premier mountain biking destination with a hefty mix of gravity and cross country trails, skills parks, kids only area and a fast flowing pump track, there is something for every level of rider. Thredbo is gearing up for another exciting mountain bike season kicking off November 17 with big events, fresh trails and great ride programs. It is shaping up to be a huge season with riders anxiously waiting six months to hit Thredbo’s gravity trails, with the country’s only season long lift accessed mountain hitting the summer slopes is easy. Here’s a rundown of the trails on offer.

The Kosciuszko Flow Trail Perfect for those looking for an introduction into downhill riding or a warm up for the Cannonball. The steady gradient gives riders a more mellow ride than the Cannonball, but still providing the adrenalin rush of downhilling. Highlights: • Fluid switchbacks • Epic views • smooth berms • easy rolling

Trail masters, Dirt Art, in collaboration with the Thredbo Trail Crew, will giving the Kosciuszko Flow Trail and All-Mountain trails a revamp with some welcomed realignments creating more consistent flow and fun for all rider abilities. Early 2019 riders will see a new link making its way from the top of the Gunbarrel Express chairlift across the valley to the middle slopes of the Kosciuszko Flow and Cannonball Downhill, it will provide riders with a low intermediate style trail. Also on the lower slopes we will see a more direct access

The Cannonball Downhill Is Thredbo’s most difficult trail that descends 600m vertically through the tree-lined Supertrail slopes. Cannonball tests riders with offcamber roots, rock drops, jumps, wallride and other technical features that the gravity specialists dream about. from the All-Mountain finish at Creek Station, taking riders directly back to the base of the Kosciuszko Express Chairlift, without having to use the road. This season’s event calendar will see the biggest MTB events in the country in Thredbo. High on any mountain bikers must do list is the Cannonball Mountain Bike Festival 5-9 December 2018. There’s $90,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs, five massive events across five action packed days plus a village full of entertainment – this will be big. Coming into its third year the Thredbo Super Enduro

The All Mountain Trail Is looking manicured and tailor made for the rider looking for adventure. It takes you through three diverse ecosystems delivering flowing singletrack, challenging rock-gardens and supreme views down the Thredbo Valley. The Thredbo Valley Track Is one of the most popular tracks in the region and offers a beautiful and exciting 19 kilometre ride from Thredbo following the iconic Thredbo River to Lake Crackenback Resort. 6 Old Snowy Campground This quiet, serene campground near Adaminaby is perfect for those who want to completely switch off from the outside world. There is no mobile reception, no powered sites and no marked sites - it’s back to basics at its most peaceful. Birdwatchers, fishermen, bushwalkers and horse riders

will find plenty to do at this little hidden gem. During spring, there is an abundance of alpine wildflowers, plus native wildlife year-round. Old Snowy is a popular spot for horse riders with dividable horse yards nearby and a great starting point for the Pocket Ride.

Camping Escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life with a camping trip in the mountains. Switch off your phone and take a breath of fresh air - it’s time to get back to basics. There’s nothing quite like falling asleep under the stars with your loved ones beside the dying embers of a fire.

Cascades Campground This small, but action-packed campground is perfect for the adventurous camper. With only six sites located on the banks of the Tuross River, you’ll feel like there’s no one else around. The river is perfect for fishing, kayaking, canoeing and swimming. At the Cascade

Falls, you can slide down a natural water slide into the pools below. If you’d like a longer walk, Tuross Falls are also nearby. Although camping is free, bookings are required all year through NPWS Bombala area office 6458 5900.

Tom Groggin Campground Set between Thredbo and Khancoban on the banks of the Murray River, Tom Groggin Campground has everything from fishing and bushwalking to mountain biking and 4WDing. Whether you’re after a relaxing camping holiday or an action-packed weekend, this gorgeous valley campground has it all. Tom Groggin is a popular

basecamp for those keen horse riders, mountain bikers and bushwalkers looking to take on the iconic Bicentennial Train. The nearby huts of Geehi are definitely worth exploring and there are breathtaking views from Scammells and Olsens lookouts. Thredbo Village is only 25km away, which has plenty of year-round activities to keep you entertained.

Art workshops

A series of artists workshops has commenced at the Kunama Gallery, Jindabyne. Kunama Gallery was the home of the late, highly-respected artist Alan Grosvenor. Following his death, Alan’s partner Noelene Dahlene, has sought to develop ways the continue Alan’s legacy to the art world. Offering the gallery as a venue for the workshops is one way she has been able to continue the legacy, while also reinvigorating the Jindabyne art scene. The most recent workshop gave local oil enthusiasts the opportunity to study for five days under the tutelage of one of

Australia’s foremost oil painters, John Wilson. The workshop was so popular that artists were attracted from all over NSW and the ACT. The painting program included some pleinair painting on Lake Jindabyne. The artists were treated to some wonderful spring weather. In 2019, the local Jindabyne Art Group proposes to host more artists for tutorials. Although he passed away some six years ago, a number of Alan’s oil paintings remain on display at the gallery. His work can be viewed by appointment. The proposal is to have like-minded artists get together to paint, in an informal relaxed meeting place. We would welcome all levels, including beginners, who share a passion for art. Thredbo is a resort for all seasons and that is the beauty of it; each season has its own distinct features. As the snow melts it’s time to lace up your hiking boots and head out into the clean fresh alpine air. During the warmer months Thredbo blooms and the village buzzes with a stack of events and activities to keep all ages on the go. The snowy slopes that were once home to skiers and snowboarders are now green and humming with

Thredbo’s year round chairlift whisks you to the closest access point to Mt Kosciuszko, from the top of the Thredbo you are only 6.5km’s from the summit, the mesh and paved walkway make this an easy to navigate, comfortable walk. You can go on the walk alone or head out with a local Thredbo guide and learn along the way. Thredbo host a number of guided hikes including a day hike to Mt Kosciuszko that departs every Saturday. There is also the incredible guided Kosciuszko Sunset that sees you high above the Main Range as the last rays of the day light up the sky in a sea of colour and then monthly Full Moon hikes give the added bonus of a rising full-moon, one adventure not to missed. This summer there is the spectacular Lunar Eclipse Hike in January. A popular addition to the line-up of hikes last year the Mt Townsend guided hike is back again for 2018/19. They say it is the better

hikers and bikers. Thredbo’s backyard boasts easy access to the amazing Main Range and Australia’s highest peak Mt Kosciuszko so lace up the hikers and head high. You will be rewarded with super 360 degree views that take in the Victorian High Country, the majestic Main Range and the mighty Monaro tablelands. The landscape is breath taking and the views will take your breath away. Thredbo is a great home base for

looking smaller sibling to Mt Kosciuszko. From the top you look down onto the highest glacial lake, dramatic western faces of the Main Range and meander through a jumble of granite boulders. Climbing Mt Kosciuszko and standing tall on the very top of Australia is an iconic achievement that most can do, whether it’s mum or dad, grandma or grandpa, the kids or partners, this is certainly an experience you will never forget. Imagine being the highest person in all of Australia!

10 The countdown is on to L’Étape Australia, with just under one month to go before thousands of riders embark on the biggest Tour de France event staged outside France. It is the most prestigious and challenging road cycling race in Australia which winds its way through the Snowy Mountains region. This year, Australian national champion (2012 and 2016) Amanda Spratt and cobbled classics specialist Mathew Hayman will ride the event. Tour de France commentator Matt Keenan will host a clinic on Friday with these cyclists, as well as call the riders across the finish line. Matt Keenan is one of the most recognisable voices in cycling and regularly forms part of the international commentary team at the Tour de France and Vuelta a Espana, broadcast around the world from Europe, USA, Africa, New Zealand and on SBS in Australia. Matt said L’Étape is a bucket list event because of its sheer difficulty. “L’Étape is hard. Whether it’s the Race of 170km or the Ride’s 108km, it’s a tough day on the bike, which is what makes it so rewarding,” he said. “It also captures some of the more glamorous parts of Tour de France experience. The locals get into the Tour spirit and you p y get to ride through beautiful little towns s painted yellow (Jindabyne), green (Berridale) and polka dot (Dalgety). Plus, you get fully closed d roads and police motorbikes rolling by ensuring uring there’s no traffic. The roads are yours. “To paraphrase the much-used d sporting cliché, ‘The pain of L’Étape is s temporary, the story telling will last a lifetime’.” Despite changing the routes slightly this year, it is still as challenging as ever and thousands are again expected to enter in the event. The route begins in Jindabyne, winding g its way with undulating hills through gh Rocky Plains before reaching the first irst food zone in Berridale. From there the route oute goes to Dalgety before Col de Beloka, known locally as The Wall. The Ride (108km)) finishes back in Jindabyne, while the Race (170km) 0km) pushes up Col de Kosciuszko before coming back b k to t Jindabyne Ji d b where everyone will celebrate in the event village. The Village will provide food, drinks, entertainment and a large kid’s play area. L’Étape Australia recommends consuming 30-60g of carbohydrate per hour of riding, eating and drinking consistently and setting a watch alarm to go off every 20 minutes as a reminder. They also recommend eating a carbohydrate rich snack 15-30 minutes before the start, such as a banana. You should also prepare food to eat post ride to boost recovery. Test your nutrition plan in training prior to the event. The overall male and female Race winners with receive a yellow jersey. The fastest male and female in the Race on the combined King of the Mountain sections will receive a polka dot jersey and the fastest male and female rider in the Race under 25 years of age will receive the white jersey.

If you prefer fishing from a boat there is loch style fishing, which is literally drifting in a boat with the wind at your back. Fishing the wind lanes in the heart of the lake, around rocky points or more often fishing the lake edges around the rocky structures or sunken trees which offer such wonderful hiding, feeding and hunting spots for the wild trout of the Snowies. If you are new to the sport of fly fishing and have never tried it before, be warned, it can be the most frustrating of sports to build your basic skills to a point of personal confidence sufficient to go out and have a go. Very few can simply rock up and grab a fly rod and master it from scratch. Most honest fly fisherman will tell you that every time you venture out you will learn something new. They will also tell you this is part of the attraction of the sport. Learning firstly how to use the equipment and then learning how to fish, to read and feel the environment, to develop a knowledge of stream craft and to try and understand the way of the trout. The reality is that no two days are the same. One day you can go out and catch (and release) 60 or more fish in a day, others you can work all day for a solitary fish or quite often no fish at all. Most fly fishermen practice catch and release. Care of the fish is important. To sight fish for trout, to present the fly and to see the fish eat that fly is a pretty special feeling. Particularly if you have tied the fly yourself. Even better is to see that fish, once released, swim gently back into the stream to live and be there for the next angler, albeit somewhat more wary of the next fly that comes its way. The use of barbless hooks is encouraged so the hook can be extracted more quickly and easily to enable the fish to be more quickly released back into the stream. Of course trout are a wonderful table fish and the taking of fish from the lakes is perfectly acceptable. More and more trout fishers are practising catch and release even on the lakes, taking only what is sufficient to satisfy their needs.

The experienced angler will have an understanding of the vast range of equipment available and also the vast price range of that equipment. These days an angler can set themselves up with some great equipment, the basic rod and reel and some flies for a few hundred dollars. If you are new to the sport of fly fishing the best tip I can give to someone is to go to your local fishing guide (or better still dial a friend, i.e. someone experienced in fly fishing) and get some casting tuition together with some basic instruction in stream craft. We have some wonderful guides and tackle suppliers in the Snowies and the Monaro and they are reasonably priced and have great knowledge of the area. For the more experienced fly fishers they are the best place to go for some good advice on flies to use and places to go. Then there is the option of competition fly fishing. Not for everyone, however from my experience it is a fantastic way to meet likeminded people, to talk fly fishing (and believe me there is a real lingo to be learned.). ‘Did you use a woolly bugger? What colour and size? Oh they took a hopper pattern! Etc’. This region offers the best trout fishing in mainland Australia. The Snowy Mountains hosted the World Fly Fishing Championships in 1999 (where Australia won the Team and Individual Gold medals) plus numerous state and national championships since. Most importantly you meet some wonderful people from all walks of life and indeed you make lifelong friendships. And along the way you get to develop your fly fishing skills and catch a few fish. COOMA The Cooma Races is an extremely popular event on the racing calendar and 2018 promises to be better than ever, with thousands of people set to travel to Cooma on December 8. The main race was named in honour of the movie, ‘The Sundowners’, which was filmed in and around Cooma, Nimmitabel and Adaminaby in 1959. One thousand locals were extras at the Ti Tree Racecourse when the race scene was filmed for the movie. Head down to the Ti Tree Racecourse for the biggest race day in Cooma and arguably the biggest social event of the year!

Visit Adaminaby One of the most scenic areas of the Adaminaby area is the Old Adaminaby Cemetery, located on Kelly’s Hill overlooking Lake Eucumbene and the Snowy Mountains.

When travelling to Adaminaby from Cooma, take a left at the Cemetery Rd or when travelling out to Old Adaminaby take a left turn at the Yens Bay turnoff and follow both roads to the end. The Old Cemetery was cut off from the old town when Lake Eucumbene was formed as part of the Snowy Mountains Scheme and many families who were associated with the town and cemetery as well. Over 25 years ago Steve Brayshaw started researching the Old Cemetery looking for the burial location of the ‘original Brayshaw’s’ as nine have headstones and three don’t. This in turn created an interest in the rest of the cemetery. After much investigating and collaboration with church and council records, information from undertakers and stonemasons, a picture of the Old Cemetery came together. Steve published and printed a book ‘Life of the Dead Old Adaminaby Cemetery’ which was released in December 2016. Have you have ever been to a cemetery and looked at a headstone and read ‘ John Doe born died’ and wondered who that person was? Steve photographed each headstone, transcribed each name and details, then ‘put some life’ to each of the names where possible with obituaries and stories. The obituaries give an insight into the lives of the original settlers, whether they were convicts, free settlers, who they married, the varied occupations and the various ways their lives ended.

David Brayshaw born 29 July 1852 died 31 August 1931 Monaro Mercury and Cooma and Bombala Mercury Monday 7 September 1931 The funeral of the late Mr David Brayshaw of Bobeyan, who met his death by shock and exposures following a fall from a horse in the early part of the last week, took place at the Adaminaby Cemetery on Friday, the Rev HS Brown officiating. The pallbearers were Messrs. Bruce Jeffrey, Maurice Luton, Edward Brayshaw, and Carl Kelly. Wreaths were from All at Hollymount, Jim, Tom and Mrs Westerman and Bruce, Dolly and family. Deceased was the son of the late Mr William Brayshaw, and was born at Bobeyan, where lived all his life, and owned a cattle station. He was 79 years of age at the time of death. There are over 450 names on the headstones and with the examination into the newspapers for obituaries found another 150 or so names of those laid to rest without headstones or details. Since the release of the book, Steve has had various family researchers who have shown or have informed him of others that are interned in the grounds of the Cemetery. So when in Adaminaby go for a wander through the cemetery take in the views and scenery but also get a copy of ‘Life of the Dead Old Adaminaby Cemetery’ $30 and follow the lives of those resting there. Also ask at the Store to see the plotted maps if you have trouble locating a family member.

The spring and summer months mostly consists of the adventurists coming to Jindabyne to experience the mountain bike tracks, hiking trails and various water sport activities, Rob’s Alpine Trike Rides offers something out of the ordinary. With many packages offered the most popular package is the tour to Charlotte Pass where his customers take the chance to take in the views and environment during the drive then spend some time up the mountain. Once customers are done at Charlotte Pass the tour then takes them to The Wild Brumby Distillery where they can relax with a complimentary drink and cheese platter overlooking the scenic fields, all of this for a small price of $85 per person and experience of a lifetime. Rob’s most memorable tour since the beginnings of his business was taking 85-year-old Corryong woman for a five-hour long drive through the twisting alpines stopping at Khancoban for lunch. “She was so happy and really enjoyed it, she didn’t want to get off,� Rob said. The trout fishing season is late starting this year and the best fishing is yet to come. Winter just didn’t want to let go this year and it was well into spring before we started to enjoy some warm sunny days. Normally as spring arrives, the trees and shrubs start to flower and of course the flowers attract all sorts of insects. Moths, beetles and of course the bees all enjoy the nectar that the flowers produce. Trout love bugs! Bugs are the staple food of trout as every fly fisherman knows and it’s the fly guys that often spend hours tying up artificial imitations to try and trick the trout into biting. It certainly is an art to select the correct artificial fly. Unfortunately, this year the flowers have been late blooming and during a trip to the Thredbo River the other day shrubs and trees that should normally be flowering and attracting plenty of insects were still without a flower. Many aquatic insects also hatch from the water to become terrestrial adults. Caddis Moths, Mayflies, dragon flies and damsel flies are just a few of these insects and all are favorite food sources for trout.

We often sit by the bank of the river watching the trout rise to an insect, out first indication of where the trout is located. My prediction is it may be late November to December before the river and stream trout fishing really starts to peak, but that’s OK because we are dealing with nature. Back on the lakes, the spring snow melt has seen the water steadily rising and Lake Jindabyne in particular is looking fantastic. Lake Eucumbene is also looking a bit better now than it did over winter when it was so low. As the water rises trout can be seen feeding around the edges and this is great if you are land based angling. Bait fishing, artificial lure fishing and fly fishing are all methods that benefit from a rising lake level. The bait guys will do

best with some worms or artificial bait like Berkley Powerbait and the lure guys with Tasmanian Devil lures or small fishy looking lures like Rapalas, Bullet Lures or even artificial casting flies. Because there are not a lot of insects on top of the water, just yet anyway, fly anglers will be best using sinking wet streamer flies like Williamson’s Snowy Mountains Goldfish or Woolly Buggers or the all-time favorite a Mrs Simpson fly. There are many flies to choose from and everyone has their favorites. The last method of catching a trout or Atlantic Salmon in Lake Jindabyne is trolling lures from a boat. Lures are placed at various depths and about 50 to 60 metres away from the boat and the boat moves very slowly along at a very slow walking pace.

The action of the lures swimming or wobbling along attract the trout to bite and while trolling is said to be a lazy way to fish it is also very productive just from the distance and water that you get to cover. The favorite brand of trolling lure in the Snowy Mountains must be the Tasmanian Devil Lure

and there are plenty of different colours and patterns to try. My theory is that bright lures for bright days and dark lures for dark days always applies. In reality there are many different brands of lures that are successful for trout and the local tackle shop will be able to advise on the best lures to use at the time

of year that you want to fish. So yes, the best trout fishing is about to happen and the best way to catch a trout is actually by putting a line in the water. You’re not going to be successful every day, some days you catch them and some days you don’t. That’s why it’s called ‘fishing’ and not ‘catching!’

The Berridale Bakery, the Toast of the Town When Jo Watson and her husband Dave opened the Berridale Bakery in 2010, they had a line going out the door. As an introduction to their new venture, they held a pie eating competition outside their shop. “There were eight very serious pie eaters competing,” Jo said. “It was a fun way to introduce the Bakery to the town.” Jo grew up in Berridale and met her Dave while on a working holiday in England. In 2004 they moved back to Australia so Jo could be closer to her family and in 2009 the opportunity arose to take over the takeaway business, located next door to the Berridale petrol station. They quickly identified a gap in the market with the closest bakery over 30km away, so decided to renovate the old takeaway and open what is now The Berridale Bakery. At the same time, Jo was studying accounting by distance and thought she would be working as an accountant full time and working at the bakery on the weekends. However, she soon realised the idea of how their business would run and the reality were two different things. To give the business the proper attention it deserved, she needed to work full time at the bakery.

Though not a natural transition, Jo has become a very successful ‘front of house’ person. She finds working behind the counter an interesting job because she gets to talk to a lot of different people all day long. Jo will admit that being a small business in a small town can be very challenging. “In the beginning we had to deal with issues like the Global Financial Crisis and learning to operate in busy high and quiet low seasons,” she said. “One week can be different to the next and it can be very stressful not knowing if you will be able to pay your bills.” Eight years on and the bakery is thriving. “We have great local support all year round and also great winter repeat customers who constantly come back for yummy pies and cakes.” All the bread, cakes, donuts, pastries, pies and sausage rolls are baked fresh daily. Dave wakes around 2am to go to the shop and commence baking. This year sees the beginning of a new era for the bakery with Jo and Dave’s daughter, Evie starting her four year course as their apprentice baker. “Watch the cake cabinet as many new treats will be added,” Jo said. Since starting the bakery in 2010, their

family of four has grown to a family of six. “One of the greatest joys of having our own business is that I get to spend so much time with my husband and kids,” Jo said. “As with many small businesses, sacrifices are made by the whole family, and I am grateful everyday for my fantastic understanding family.” You can’t miss the kids when they are at the shop with their irresistible smiles, big blue eyes and blonde hair. They definitely charm the customers. Jo charms her customer too, with her friendly nature shining through as she jokes with her local customers. Jo receives help from two local teenage girls, Meg and Caitlin, who come by the shop nearly every afternoon and help pack away the tables and chairs set up under a shady tree for customers to sit and enjoy a cake or pie and a coffee. Asking Meg was she rewarded for her work with a chocolate croissant, she replied, “I’ve already taken one!” Jo smiles and says they are good girls who also take the little ones outside to play if they get bored being there. Lee from Stone Cottage next door is also a great help, doting on the baby and taking him if he gets a little fractious. “You need to trust it will be all worth it in the end. One day you will wake up and say, this is what I thought it would be.”

Middleton will feature as headline on Saturday 23rd February 2019, bringing music from his album, TIDES, along with some of Powderfinger’s greats. Middleton began guitar in high school, influenced by AC/DC and Twisted Sister, and began playing in clubs around his hometown of Brisbane as part of his first band, Sonic Tapestry. He went on to form another band, Pirate, with high school friends, and met Powderfinger at a Pirate show where he was invited to join the band. Middleton took part in all of Powderfinger’s recordings, at the same time writing and releasing an EP and studio album with Drag. After Powderfinger called it quits in 2010, Middleton started working on his first solo LP, “Translations”. The album was released in 2013. During his time with Powderfinger, Middleton developed a taste for film score, composing for the Heath Ledger movie, ‘Two Hands” and Eric Bana’s “Love the Beast”. 2016 saw Middleton return to touring, as he embarked on a four-show tour of Western Australia and Victoria for his solo project ‘Splinters’. Middleton’s newest album, TIDES, is a lot grittier than past releases with a sound that is organically shaped and reminiscent of a different era. Tumbafest organisers are delighted to have Middleton headline the event in 2019, accompanied by a high-quality main stage line-up. More artist announcements will be made shortly. Always the last weekend in February each year, Tumbafest will be held on 23-24 February 2019. With $100K on the prize table, some of the world’s biggest names in the line-up and a fired up format, the 2018 Thredbo Cannonball MTB Festival 5-9 December, is set to stamp its mark as Australia’s biggest, richest and most prestigious mountain bike event. The award winning event, now it in its sixth year, is not only on the radar to some of the biggest names in the sport, the format attracts amateurs and rising stars of all ages, mountain bike styles and abilities. There’s 20 categories in each event ranging from groms in under 13s to the most experienced over 50s, the Cannonball Festival caters to all and is a great introduction to mountain bike competitions. “I feel like Cannonball is going to be bigger than ever this year for 2018. The Flow Motion Cup is also a great introduction to gravity racing Although not super technical, this race requires a fit efficient type of rider. A stack of steep banked berms and rolling traverses ensures that cornering and pedalling ability will be paramount .. Group B will compete on Friday 7th and Group A will compete on Saturday 8th. It’s all about whip and steeze - the crowd favourite Deity Whip Wars will again hit centre stage Saturday afternoon, with some of the best big air bikers sending it sideways on the super booter at the finish arena. Event Information Commencal Australian Open Downhill Sunday 9 December The Commencal Australian Open DH will be raced on Thredbo’s famous Cannonball Downhill the old school way, meaning we will include the upper fast and furious fire road. The Osprey All-Mountain Assault returns to 1800m above sea level at the top of the Gunbarrel Express Chairlift. The iron men and women of mountain biking will embark on a gruelling 7km undulating descend on a trail designed for a short travel mountain bike with times around 13 minutes to aim for. The All-Mountain trail has everything a rounded rider could ask for, technical descends, natural obstacles, smaller jump options and pinch climbs to push even the most avid enduro purist. Explore the region on foot Bushwalking and hiking is fantastic way to explore the Snowy Monaro and Snowy Valleys regions, and there are plenty to choose from. There are walks to suit all fitness levels, whether you’re after a short leisurely walk or something to get your heart pumping. Either way, our picturesque mountains, forests and bushland are bound to take your breath away. Here are a few favourites. Kosciuszko Walk Distance: 13km Time: 4-5 hours Grade: 3 - suitable for most ages and fitness levels If you’re visiting the Snowy Mountains and haven’t yet done the Kosciuszko Walk, put it at the top of your to-do list. Starting at Thredbo, catch the Kosciuszko Express Chairlift to the top and marvel at the magnificent view over Thredbo and the Monaro plains. The formed track winds through the rocky outcrops of Ramshead Range before crossing the headwaters of the Snowy River. In spring, keep an eye out for alpine wildflowers. The track climbs above Lake Cootapatamba and on to Rawson Pass before gradually ascending up to the summit. The views from the roof of Australia are breathtaking. The 360-degree panorama sweeps across the Snowy Mountains, Monaro and Victorian high country. It’s a beautiful place to enjoy some lunch and relax before taking the same track home. Yarrangobilly Caves - Glory Farm Walk Distance: 3km loop Time: 45 min - 1hr 15min Grade: 3 - suitable for most ages and fitness levels This walk follows a popular route along the Yarrangobilly River and links up with the Thermal Pool walk along the way. Don’t forget to pack your swimmers if you’re planning on having a dip in the natural spring-fed pool. From the pool, the track meanders upstream - keep an eye out for platypus in the river, or native birds who call this area home, like

lyrebirds, blue wrens, rosellas and king parrots. The track then climbs up to meet the Glory Arch walk where you can continue on to explore the South Glory Cave on a selfguided tour (you’ll need a ticket from the Visitor Centre). Sugar Pine Walk Distance: 500m Time: As long as you like Grade: 1 - flat even surface with no steps or steep sections This extremely Instagram-worthy walk is one of the Snowy Valleys’ best kept secrets. Found at Laurel Hill, a 10-minute drive from Batlow, this section of the Bago State Forest features a canopy of towering pine trees. The colossal trees dwarf their visitors, making for an awe-inspiring experience. Each step is softened underfoot by a bed of pine needles, adding to the eerie stillness of the forest. The walk is only 500m long, but links up to other forest walks if you’d like to extend your stroll. Nunnocks Swamp and Grasslands walking tracks Distance: 15km loop Time: 8-9 hours Grade: 3 - suitable for most ages and fitness levels This 15km loop incorporates a number of interconnecting walking tracks in the Far South Coast hinterland, meaning you can choose your own walking adventure. The network of trails includes a vast range of scenery, offering something for bushwalkers, birdwatchers, photographers and campers alike. Explore Wilkinsons Walking Track and set up camp at historic Alexanders Hut. Connect from this track to Nunnock campground via the Keys Walking Track which leads you from grassland to snow gum woodland. From there you can roam the Roam the swamp’s edges on the Nunnock Swamp Walking Track or retrace old stock routes along the Cattleman’s Walking Track. the markets by the river

The Bombala Rotary Markets may only be relatively new to the regional calendar, but if the first few are anything to go by, the upcoming markets on November 24 will be big. And they’ll be beautiful too, being held once again this year on the banks of the picturesque Bombala River, featuring large shade trees, garden beds and grassy areas; perfect for a late-spring market. “We are certainly looking forward to a great market day,� Bombala Rotary President, Michael Dyer said. “Currently we have 110 stalls booked, with further bookings coming in daily.� And with Rotary having moved the popular biannual market to the end of November this year, they have been able to adopt a wonderful festive theme just in time for the lead up to Christmas.

As a particular highlight, Santa himself will be spending some time at the event this year, and bookings are now being taken for Santa photos via the Bombala Rotary Markets Facebook page. Also new to the market will be an exciting food court, allowing visitors to look over the incredible 12 food stalls to decide what they’d like to sample from the splendid variety on offer. “Rotary will also be launching their new catering trailer at the market, which has been made possible by a Boco Rock Community Enhancement Fund grant,� Mr Dyer said. When it comes to general market stalls, there will also be huge variety, with a large number of stallholders returning and new ones jumping on board to create an exciting day for the community and its visitors.

Be prepared for your bushwalk

Walking in national parks and reserves provides a great opportunity for solitude and self-reliant exploration. If you’re keen to head out on a longer walk or a backpack camp, that’s great – you’ll never run out of options. But always be prepared. National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) provides the following advice to make sure you return from your walk safely.

Plan your walk • Research your walk and make sure everyone is comfortable with the planned route • Go at the pace of the slowest person and don’t overestimate your abilities. • Walk in groups of three or more people – in an emergency one of you might need to wait with the injured person while the other gets help. • Check the difficulty – some walks require rock scrambling and abseiling skills. If you’re not sure of the difficulty, contact the local NPWS park office. • Check weather forecasts and park conditions and be aware that weather conditions can change. • You may also come across waterfalls during a bush walk, so be sure to also check our waterfall safety page.

Tell somebody • Give route details to your friends and family or the NSW Police. Tell them about any medical conditions and when to expect you back. • Check in when you return. • The NSW Police Force and NPWS provide bushwalkers and adventurers in the Kosciuszko National Park with a free loaned Personal Locator Beacon. With warmer days and longer arvos, barefoot bowls is the perfect sport to get in to. There’s nothing like the feel of the green between your toes and a cold beer in the outdoors to finish off a week. There a plenty of bowling clubs across the region who welcome any new players for a barefoot bowls session. As the highest bowling green in Australia, Jindabyne Bowling and Sports Club has a bowling green with one of the best views in the country. The Winter Olympic sport of biathlon is growing again in the Snowy Mountains. Starting in NSW in 2009, and with NSW’s first Olympic biathlete Alexei Almoukov hailing from Berridale, the sport is once again on the move, after going through a few quiet years following Almoukov’s retirement in 2015. The re-kindled growth in biathlon has been largely due to the deregulation of laser biathlon systems by NSW Firearms Registry in August 2017. Laser systems use a laser beam to hit their target and are not considered a firearm in NSW, meaning biathlon can be tried by all ages and in any location! What is Biathlon? Biathlon is a Winter Olympic sport, considered one of the toughest to take part in. Olympic biathletes cross country ski distances anywhere from 7.5km to 20km and carry a smallbore rifle weighing at least 3.5kgs on their back. They ski as fast as they can, and then have to come into the shooting range, manage their racing heart and shoot five targets 50m away either in the prone (45mm diameter targets) or standing (115mm diameter targets) position. Originating as a means of hunting for food on skis with rifles slung over their shoulders in the snowcovered forests of Scandinavia, the first biathlon-type events were believed to be held as early as the 18th century. The first modern biathlon event probably occurred in 1912 when the Norwegian military organised the Forvarsrennet in

Oslo. Biathlon made its Olympic debut in 1924 and became a regular part of the Winter Olympics in 1960. Biathlon is now one of the most popular winter sports in Europe. Biathlon in NSW and the Snowies In Australia, while the sport is small, those who discover biathlon, soon become hooked! In NSW, with the Perisher snowfields being in the Kosciuszko National Park, biathlon uses a laser system, and the cross country skiing trails in Perisher Valley are the location of the only on-snow Biathlon Range in NSW. The laser system, called the Faezor Laser Biathlon system, was developed by Friedl Bartsch, who has a passion for Biathlon and generously supports the sport by making his system available for use. In August this year, the Perisher Valley Biathlon Range hosted the 2018 NSW Laser Biathlon Junior Series, where athletes from Jindabyne Central School were extremely successful with a number placing in the top three of their divisions and the girls winning the female schools point score trophy for participation and achievement. Following on from the Junior Series, NSW Biathlon held a development camp for interested local athletes, with NSW Biathlon Head Coach and 2006 Biathlon Olympian Cameron Morton leading the athletes in a number of biathlon drills. These included learning how to approach the range, getting onto/off the shooting mat, positioning the body correctly as

well as integrating cross country skiing skills with the requirements of biathlon. Summer Biathlon Biathlon is one of the few snowsports in Australia which offers a successful summer version. Summer biathlon involves replacing snow skis with rollerskis, running or mountain bikes. Laser rifles or .22 rifles are used, with laser systems meaning all ages can be involved and at any location. Summer biathlon targets can be set up anywhere! NSW Biathlon will be holding Summer biathlon Come’n’Try and training sessions in the Snowies during 2019. A Summer Laser Biathlon event in Jindabyne is being planned for the 2019 June Long Weekend for all ages to enter. The sport of Biathlon in NSW offers both fun and participation and also a pathway to the very top! NSW Biathletes have represented Australia at the Winter Olympics in 2010 and 2014 and were on the Shadow Olympic team in 2018. Biathlon offers athletes the choice of laser participation or they can cross over into smallbore .22 shooting once they turn 12 and can apply for a NSW Firearms Minors Licence. Hotham Alpine Resort hosts Australia’s only on-snow .22 Biathlon Range and NSW takes a team of athletes to the Australian Biathlon Championships each year.
