Australian National Busking Championships It’s that time of year again. Cooma is gearing up for it’s biggest weekend of entertainment for the year. November 4 will see the Snowy Ride motorcyclists roar through town, the Cooma Car Club’s huge Motorfest will have hundreds of extraordinary vehicles on display, and of course, the streets will be alive with the sound of music from talented buskers hailing from all over the country. The Australian National Busking Championships (ANBC) is in its sixth year, and it will be bigger than ever. For those who haven’t been before, buskers are stationed at various locations around Cooma’s CBD, performing all day in the lead up to the finals concert held in Centennial Park in the evening. With a range of categories, there is plenty of variety and the atmosphere in town is electric. Regional championships were held for the first time this year in

Stanthorpe (Queensland), Ballarat (Victoria), Narooma (NSW), Noosa Heads (Queensland) and Peak Hill (NSW) in the lead up to the finals in Cooma. Interest has been shown by a further 21 towns across Australia from all states and territories. “If places like Tamworth and Deniliquin can have huge events like the Country Music Festival and Deni Ute Muster, Cooma can do the same and the Busking can become a national festival,” says founder and organiser Allan Spencer. Passionate about the arts and music, Allan has run Cooma School of Music for many years. Selling various instruments and accessories, Allan also facilitates music lessons. Allan is a teacher himself and also allows space for other local musicians to hold lessons. Running the ANBC is becoming bigger and bigger for Allan, but has assistance from many

others in town. The ANBC will kick off with the Night of Champions on Friday November 3 at the Cooma Ex-Services Club. Former winners and regular ANBC entrants The String Family will be performing. Mother, father, son and daughter featuring two cellos, two violins, voice and percussion perform Celtic, folk, world and classical crossover music. Having entered the competition for several years, The String Family have decided to this year attend as ambassadors for the event. Joining The String Family for the Night of Champions is winner of the Open Category at the Ballarat regional final, Geoffrey Williams. A very entertaining performer, Geoffrey is one not to be missed. He has been described as “a worldrenowned performer: one man, a loop pedal and a whole lot of soul, engaging his audiences with his reggae roots and 60s/70s soul heritage.”

Geoffrey not only has a huge reputation as a performer but also as a songwriter. He has written songs for artists such as Michael Jackson. The Haystack Mountain Hermits are also on the lineup for the Night of Champions. They are another bona fide family band with Jackson, Marcus, Lachlan, Ella, Dad (Dave) and Mum (Kerrie). The Haystack Mountain Hermits won the Open Category at the Stanthorpe regional final. They perform a great mix of American Bluegrass and Australian Folk Music. They are all multi-instrumentalists performing on guitars, piano accordion, dobro, mandolin, ukulele, side drum, washboard and double bass. They also sing their hearts out in vocal harmony. They were hugely popular at the Stanthorpe competition and drew a large enthusiastic crowd wherever they performed. With 161 entrants in last year’s ANBC Cooma, even more are expected this year. While all the performers are very talented, Allan has a few he is looking forward to seeing in Cooma. Winner of the Primary Category at Peak Hill was Hannah CayoDun. Just 12 years old, Hannah plays the piano beautifully and has an amazing voice. Another is the City of Queanbeyan pipe and drum band. A 20-piece bagpipe group joined by drummers, the band is an impressive sight and makes an impressive sound. There will also be a 35-piece African drum group called Rhythm Hunters who won the Primary Category at the

Narooma regional finals. A new category being added to the lineup this year is School Group. With single performers competing against choirs and groups in the primary and secondary categories, it was becoming difficult to judge. Allan decided to make it a fair comparison; a School Group Category was needed. Throughout the day, spectators can buy special ‘busking dollars’ to give to their favourite buskers throughout the day. The act with the most busking dollars will determine the winner of the People’s Choice Award. Spectators may also give real money to the performers, just as you would any other busker. The performers keep 100% of the money given to them and some also sell their CDs and other merchandise. The finals concert brings together the top buskers selected by the judges throughout the day to determine the winners, with $10,000 cash in prizes. This year the MC for the concert will be Mikelangelo of the band Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen. A local band exploring the music of 20th century Europe, with the old world of waltzes, polkas and mazurkas crashing into the new world of swing. Quite the character, Mikelangelo will provide an extra element of entertainment to the evening. Following the finals concert, there will be an Open Mike at the Cooma Hotel, major sponsor of the ANBC Cooma. All are welcome to come for the jam session, and to even get behind the mike themselves.

Geoffrey Williams will be one busker coming to Cooma. Geoffrey has written songs for Michael Jackson. Right: The String Family are always a popular act at the Championships.

Celebrating the Spring Flushing of Snowy River

The Jindabyne Dam spillway gates opened at 7am on Wednesday October 4, sending almost 8,000 Ml down the Snowy River, the largest release of water for the year. Environmental and community groups, as well as recreational river users, welcome this large environmental flushing flow and are holding the annual Snowy River Day to celebrate the occasion. Snowy River Alliance (SRA) Chairperson, Vickii Wallace said the release has been timed to mimic melting snow in spring. “This water release is part of the restoration of the Snowy River after the construction of the Snowy Hydro scheme, which was completed in 1974. The Jindabyne Dam reduced the Snowy to one per cent of its original flow, which caused the river to silt and allowed willows and blackberries to take over,” Mrs Wallace said. The Dalgety Hall was set up with displays from local businesses, with some entertaining videos of paddlers on the mighty Snowy River in flood, and a famous

historic 1937 video of two men, Hanson and Hunt, paddling the river in their Huon pine canoe. There was the usual ‘good country hospitality’ with free refreshments and cakes, and a barbecue lunch, which was appreciated by the paddlers and attendees. Paddlers came from as far away as the Grampians and Queensland to ride the big water, which was released for eight hours from 7am to 3pm. Many of the paddlers were here for the recent Snowy River Extreme Race, and stayed on for this release event. Chair of Snowy River Alliance, Vickii Wallace paid tribute to the late Angel John Gallard, who was a passionate “man of the earth and of the river, extremely knowledgeable about local indigenous culture and the interconnection with the Snowy Mountains. He left behind a comprehensive library of reading material relating to the history of the Snowy River” said Mrs Wallace. Speakers included the former NSW Government Environment Minister, Bob Debus AM, who was

responsible for bringing about the agreement with the Commonwealth, Victorian and NSW Governments in 2000 to restore environmental water flows to the Snowy River, from one per cent flow to 28 per cent. He praised the work of the scientists “who have done an absolutely astonishing good work on how best to eke out just a few Gigalitres initially, to finally 21% of the Snowy’s natural flow to go a long way to restoring the health of the river.” Luke Pope from South East Local Land Services gave an outline of the Snowy River recovery work and regional economic benefits of a healthy Snowy River. His estimates indicated an increase in tourism revenue from paddling activities of around $3 million per year, and around $16 million per year from increased fishing related tourism. The Snowy River Day was hosted by the Snowy River Alliance and the Dalgety District and Community Association, supported by the South East Local Land Services and the Snowy Monaro Regional Council.

The Thredbo All-Mountain Trail is now 100% completed in its full 10km glory. Starting in the high alpine, the All-Mountain trail takes you through three diverse ecosystems delivering flowing single-track, challenging rockgardens and supreme views down the Thredbo Valley. Graded as an intermediate trail, the All-Mountain gives riders a unique riding experience that is not found on the regular gravity trails of the bike park. New riders to the Thredbo Mountain Bike Park can up their skills this summer with 2 hour beginner, intermediate and advanced clinics running daily along with 2.5hr personalised private lessons tailored to the rider’s needs. New for 2017 every weekend and daily throughout school holidays, morning 3 hour junior ride clinics will be available for children aged 10 – 15 years of age. Utilising the beginner skills park at the Valley Terminal base, the kid’s clinics include free lift access during the clinic and are designed to give young dirt demons an introduction to the trails of Thredbo in a fun and laidback environment. Trail masters, Dirt Art, in collaboration with the Thredbo Trail Crew, will give the tracks a makeover and create link trails that will connect the current routes together giving riders the option to mix up their style and type of trail over the 600m vertical decent. A favourite for enduro riders will be the Central Spur link making its way from the AllMountain at the top of the Gunbarrel Express chairlift across the valley to the middle slopes of the Kosciuszko Flow and Cannonball Downhill. On the lower slopes there will be a more direct access from the All-Mountain finish at Creek Station, bringing riders directly back to Valley Terminal and base of the Kosciuszko Express Chairlift. The trails development will continue in the coming years, with plans submitted for new routes across the mountain. In addition to the new link trails, the

Kosciuszko Flow Trail and All-Mountain trails will gain a revamp with some welcomed realignments creating more consistent flow and fun for all rider abilities. The Thredbo Valley Track is one of the most talked about tracks in the region and offers a beautiful and exciting 19 kilometre ride from Thredbo following the iconic Thredbo River to Lake Crackenback Resort, with scenic undulating terrain, woodlands, forests, grasslands and impressive suspension bridges. New for summer 17/18 the 6.5km extension of the Thredbo Valley Track – this sees the track get a little more technical, still hugging along the river, you ride through all kinds of vegetation and terrain, very spectacular. This season’s event calendar will see the biggest MTB events in the country in Thredbo. High on any mountain bikers must do list is the Cannonball Mountain Bike Festival 6-10 December 2017. There’s $70,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs, five massive events across five action packed days plus a village full of entertainment – this will be big. Coming into its second year the Thredbo Super Enduro will test the true all-rounder utilising all three gravity trails, Feb 24-25. The battle of the schools continues with the 2018 Australian interschool’s MTB champs March 15-18. The Mountain Bike Park opens 18 November, this includes the Kosciuszko Express Chairlift for easy access to the top of the mountain and the feast of gravity trails. Just roll your bike on at the bottom and off at the top and you are away! Whether you’re new to the sport or a seasoned pro there’s plenty of mountain biking stoke this summer in the Thredbo Mountain Bike Park. e ay r d F all THE BOWLO BISTRO Open 12 - 2pm for Lunch Open 6pm for dinner

Record breaking snowfalls, incredible conditions and more après than ever before – what a way to celebrate Thredbo’s 60th season! It certainly was a season of stoke and Thredbo set the benchmark when it comes to an all encompassed snow holiday with plenty on offer on both sides of the mountain. This was recently recognised as Thredbo picked up the “Australia’s Best Ski Resort for 2017” at the Snowsports Industry Australia awards, held in Canberra in October. Here’s a list of a few moments that made this season so full of stoke… Top of the list on our stoke-o-metre has to be the BLIZZARD OF OZ. The headlinemaking snowstorm first dumped its white fluffy flakes at the start of August dumping a huge 135cm in four days. Just like flared jeans, it wasn’t something we expected to make such a massive comeback, but this was big. The Blizzard of Oz returned for a new and improved 2.0 and 3.0 versions, bringing 60 and 140cm+ of light, dry snow respectively. By the end of the un-spring-like #blizzardofoz3.0, snow depths at Spencer’s Creek hit record levels, the best since 2000. These superb conditions saw super stoked skiers and boarders hitting the slopes to enjoy some of the best conditions in years. Thredbo is famous for après and this season was next level – The First Base Après Ski Soirée saw Hugo Gruzman and Tom Tilley alongside some of Australia’s top artists including Luke Million, Confidence Man and Hayden James in all their poolside-retro-party-glory. The party continued with three massive all-out village concerts in collaboration with Heineken. With a huge stage set-up, light shows, fireworks and that raving après vibe that has carried us through the last 60 years, Thredbo hosted some of the hottest

acts including Montaigne, Hot Dub Time Machine, Winston Surfshirt and Panama. Kings-of-après Client Liaison showed how to rock retro-one-pieces, The Preatures previewed their upcoming national tour and some epic DJs and producers worked the decks both at Poolside and Full Moon parties at the Keller Bar. Big names included Go Freek, Indian Summer, Torren Foot and worldwide-phenomenon Yolanda Be Cool. What a line-up – exhausted. On the mountain, the action heated up in the Top to Bottom race, as close to 300 racers contested seven categories throwing it all on the line for the prestigious title. With a huge few days of après both on and off the mountain, culminating in the epic G.H. Mumm Après Party with Jess Porsches, KLP, Elizabeth Rose, MOZA and Commandeur… it was a weekend to remember (or maybe not, with all that champagne flowing). With the winter Olympics looming, Thredbo was awash with the world’s top alpine skiers, battling it out through the gates for all important team positions at the ANC Cup. The crowds cheered not -as-fast but oh-so-impressive Red Bull King of Bob racers as they slid down on their sleds to victory, and also watched in awe as some of the gnarliest free riders launched off the 100ft One Hit Wonder jump. The kids were well looked after, with Olympian Torah Bright sharing her skills and some hot park tips with some legendary groms at the Torah Bright Mini Shred. There was plenty of school holiday fun including an on-mountain Snow Hunt and kids flare nights at the packed-full-offun LEGO Kids Snow Festival. Along with September school holidays program, there was no one in the village without a smile on their face. Now time to get ready for a huge summer ahead!

Pictured at top: Strapped in and ready for the final ascent to Mt Kosciuszko, a perfect bluebird day was appreciated by team members (from left), Clare Rose, Nathan New, Viv Lavan, Ben Gardam and Daniel Boland.

Now in its third year, Manly2Mountain is a charity cycling adventure, leaving from Sydney’s Manly Beach to ascend Australia’s highest mountain, Mt Kosciuszko, via Bowral, Kangaroo Valley, Batemans Bay, Broulee, Bega, Bemboka, Brown Mountain, Dalgety, the infamous “Beloka Wall”, Jindabyne, and Thredbo. This dedicated team of charity cyclists completed the event for the first time in December 2015, and raised over $20,000 for Bear Cottage. This year a smaller team of three (Ben Gardam, Nathan New and Viv Lavan) cycled over six days in early October, encountering an icy reception at the summit due to heavy snowfalls late in the winter. A last-minute strategy change the day before the final leg, saw them don snowshoes and cross-country skis to complete their mission, where they were joined by Clare Rose (support van) and Daniel Boland. Bear Cottage is the only children’s hospice in NSW and provides support, love, care, laughter, fun, regular respite, specialized camps and end of life care for terminally ill children and their families. Located on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, Bear Cottage is a medically supported home

away from home that currently costs more than $3.2 million a year to keep their doors open, so the team is seeking donations, hoping that their efforts will make a real difference. “Where we cannot add years to life, we add life to years. But only with your help.” To help the Manly2Mountains team provide a little happiness, please visit their fundraising page: https://give.everydayhero. com/au/manly2mountain-2017-1 and to find out more about Bear Cottage and the support services they provide to families in need, visit: http://www.bearcottage.chw.edu.au

The team left Manly Beach on 30th September and cycled variable terrain through Bowral, the Kangaroo Valley, down the coast to Bateman’s Bay, Bega and up Brown Mountain to the Monaro Plains, Jindabyne and Thredbo at the base of Australia’s highest peak. Image – Courtesy Manly2Mountains.

It’s all for show

A country show always draws a crowd, with locals and out-of-towners coming together to enjoy a great family day out. The show pavilion is always a highlight, with walls covered in colourful artworks created by local talent. The flower section is fresh and bright, with roses, dahlias, marigolds and lilies in full bloom. Champion ribbons display familiar names - some are first-time winners, others have won best in show for years. The photography section just keeps getting bigger and better, with everyone from kids to grandparents showing us their world through the lens. As kids, we loved the arts and crafts competitions; creating artworks from recycled materials, arranging pressed flowers and making pictures with shells collected from the beach. We’d make sculptures out of vegetables and decorate Arrowroot Biscuits with icing, sprinkles and smarties. The region’s star bakers come into their own during show season. Fruit cakes, sponges, cupcakes, pikelets, chocolate cakes and scones are among the many delights awaiting the judges. After admiring these goodies, it must be time for some lunch! You are spoiled for choice at the show - grab a snack on the go, swing by the barbeque, or find a seat in the supper room for a meal prepared by the best cooks in town. Outside the pavilion, there is much more to explore. The sheepdog trials run from dawn till dusk, with old dogs and young pups showing off their skills in the yards. The more experienced yard dogs finish the course with ease, obeying every call. The younger pups are excited by the crowds,

19

opting for speed over precision. The dog high jump is always a favourite. Spectators bid on the dogs and cheer them on as they leap over the wooden panels until they reach their limit. You won’t believe how high a Pomeranian can jump! For the kids, the show is packed with fun. Carnival rides and games, face painting, sideshows, baby animals and plenty to watch. Pop into the shearing section to see how the pro’s do it, or head over to the poultry to check out the chooks. If you need a break from all the action, find a shady spot near the horse rings and watch the region’s horse men and women do what they do best. The fancy dress competition is one not to miss; the kids go all-out, dressing up their ponies in colourful matching outfits. Towards the end of the day it starts to cool down and the crowds gather to watch the final events. You can’t go home before the Stockman’s Challenge, wood chop and chainsaw rip. The Cooma Show is the first in the region to extend its hours into the night with live music, entertainment and fireworks. During show season, we realise how talented our small communities are. Bakers, growers, artists, trainers, riders, shearers and sculptors come out in their masses to celebrate our wonderful community.

Carlton Draught High Country Music Muster The muster was born after the owners of the Snowgoose Hotel, Adaminaby, saw a need for both an attraction for tourism and a platform for local artists to perform. As many of the Snowgoose Hotel patrons have a keen interest in country music, it seemed logical. After countless hours of research and organising the pub found the artists and the rest started to fall into place. Country Music draws a country crowd, so country hospitality is required. Friendly smiles, good old fashion food and support of a local organisation are all at the top of the list. The local organisation chosen by the Snowgoose to support is the Adaminaby Pony Club, with the slogan “Keeping High Country Kids on Horse Back. As for the old fashion food, you can’t go past the smell and taste of a spit roast or the temptations of the camp oven cook off! The camp oven cook off will be held over the Saturday and judged on Saturday afternoon. The event has been sponsored by Blue Sky Outdoors Cooma with prizes valued over $200 in total. All are welcome to enter and can find the details on our webpage or Facebook page over the next week. As for the music itself, Miner’s

Transport has jumped on board and will be supplying a truck stage for the event. Is there a more country way to deliver such a show? The artist line up is one to impress. Urban Drover from ACT will be opening the event on Friday night from 7pm. A well known and liked band that always delivers an impressive performance. Throughout Saturday local girls Shelby Grace and Matilda Rose will be preforming their gentle eclectic music along with Michael Horneman and Rachael Fahim. Michael is also a Snowy Monaro local whose musical ability can not go unnoticed. Rachael Fahim, performing with Michael is the current Toyota Star Maker with a powerhouse voice. Saturday night picks up with Jindabyne local Brad Cox. Brad delivers a raw, energising true blue country performance that will have the street coming alive. As the Snow Goose Hotel is a Carlton Hero Hotel, Carlton Draught were more than happy to come on board to be the major sponsors of our event. All details as released will be available at www.snowgoosehotel.com.au or on our Facebook page @SnowGoseHotel

RIDE FOR A CURE AT THE HONDA SNOWY RIDE IN THREDBO The Snowy Mountains community is preparing to welcome more than 2,000 motorcyclists to the region to help raise funds for vital research into a cure for childhood cancer. The 17th annual Honda Snowy Ride, hosted by Steven Walter Children’s Cancer Foundation in Thredbo, is on Saturday November 4. The ride has played a pivotal role in SWCCF raising more than $7 million since it began in 2001. The Snowy Ride is a fun, friendly and relaxed motorcycle ride. It’s not a race, and there’s no set starting point or time. You can leave from anywhere, whenever you like, and take whatever route you like as long as you’re at the final checkpoint in Thredbo by 4pm on the afternoon of Saturday November 4. There are also checkpoints manned by volunteers at Adaminaby, Dalgety, Berridale, Jindabyne, Cooma, Bombala and Charlotte Pass on Saturday. “Every year we are blown away by the amazing crew of motorcyclists who come and take part in the Snowy Ride and help us fundraise for a cure,” said Chief Executive Officer of Steven Walter Children’s Cancer Foundation, Sue Walter. “My son Steve passed away aged 19 and it was his passion for riding motorcycles that drove us to create this event. Our aim is for the Snowy Ride to involve the motorcycle riders of Australia to raise money for research into childhood cancer and its side effects all while enjoying a fantastic weekend of riding some of the most scenic parts of NSW,” she said. Snowy Ride platinum sponsor, Honda

Motorcycles Australia, has provided a Honda Africa Twin 1000L ‘A’ model as first prize and a Honda CMX500, with a total value of $25,000. “To win one of these fantastic bikes all you need to do is register and pay the $60 entry fee. The best part is that even if you can’t make it to the ride, just by entering you still go into the draw for the bikes and support our fundraising efforts at the same time. Pillions who register will also go into the draw for a Honda. “We thank our loyal riders who keep coming back each year and making it such a great event, as well as our hosts, Thredbo in helping us make this a fantastic event every year,” said Sue. For more information or to register for the Honda Snowy Ride visit stevenwalterfoundation.org.au like us on Facebook facebook.com/TheSnowyRide or e-mail admin@stevenwalterfoundation.org. au. “We work closely with NSW Police, NSW Roads & Maritime Services as well as the local Councils to make the ride as safe and enjoyable as possible for everyone involved,” Sue said. The Snowy Ride is the largest and one of the longest running motorcycle charity events in Australia. Over the past 17 years the Snowy Ride has played a pivotal role in the fundraising efforts of the Steven Walter Children’s Cancer Foundation to support vital research so that every child diagnosed with cancer can be guaranteed a future and an improved quality of life

A Day on the Snowy with a River Guide

When you experience the iconic Snowy River from water level as it passes through the pristine alpine wilderness with an expert cultural guide, it is not only a fun day, but an unforgettable and educational adventure. No experience is necessary – it is suitable for both novices and advanced whitewater adventurers (over 12 years old), and a minimum of four people up to fifteen paddlers in the group. The guides will pick you up from your Cooma accommodation at 7:30am, or Jindabyne accommodation at 8:30am. After a half hour drive through the countryside, you will enter the Kosciuszko National Park, where the scenic alpine road drops steeply over 750 meters in elevation to the Snowy River. You will be given a comprehensive safety talk, before two hours of getting wet and wild in the rapids in an individual, or twin inflatable kayak. Lunch is served by the banks of the Snowy River, before another two hours of paddling along the stunning Snowy, until you reach your destination at the Pinch confluence. After relaxing with some afternoon snacks, your guide will pack up the gear, and you can enjoy the amazing mountain

views as you are escorted back to your accommodation. The trip takes place in one of the most remarkable regions of the Australian continent – scenic, dramatic and full of special wildlife and cultural places. Grades 1-3 pulsing white water rapids dispersed with contemplative calm pools to catch your breath and enjoy pristine surroundings. You might even see a platypus! A testimonial from a Canberra customer said “Nine of us ranging in ages and abilities did the day trip adventure with Richard and Matt as guides. Their confidence, experience and knowledge of the land was amazing. They pitched the trip to the right level for each of us so we all tested the beauty of the experience. Richard has great way of telling stories of the local legends, and that alone was a special experience. One of our best experiences and would highly recommend it. For more information on booking a day trip, or longer five day trips into the Byadbo Wilderness, see the Facebook page, website: www.riverguide.com.au or contact Richard Swain on 0428 826 938. Secret Scone Business as Ambo’s win the Eiger Chalet Scone-Off yet again!

@themonaropost

www.monaropost.com.au

ŕ Ž sales@monaropost.com.au

MAYBE DECOR alterations & soft furnishings Homewares Ambulance Officers Mick Couvee (left) and Kent Hillier (right) proudly display the Eiger Chalet Scone-Off trophy for the third year running on behalf of their team, some of whom were called out on an emergency during the event. When Jenny Frost and her family bought Perisher’s Eiger Chalet in 2014, they quickly realised that the local Emergency Response crews were very competitive about their baking skills, specifically scones. After a challenge was issued over a beer at the bar one night between the Ambos and Firies, the Eiger Chalet SconeOff was conceived. The Scone-Off is getting bigger every year and is a great informal occasion for Perisher staff to get together and have a bit of lighthearted fun towards the end of the winter season. Over 40 dozen scones, with jam and cream were consumed in a very short time, the crumbs washed down by numerous cups of tea and coffee. Jenny remarked that “we were overwhelmed by the numbers who came, and had to get out more cups and plates, and bake more scones to cope. For those who couldn’t get away from work, Jenny sent batches of scones to the Perisher shopkeepers. This is the first year that this annual event has been used as a fundraiser, with the target of $3000 to purchase a defibrillator for the Jindabyne community and visiting public. All money raised will be matched dollar for dollar by Dr Karen from the Perisher Medical Centre. That will provide a massive boost to the cause, with over $1100 raised so far at the Scone-Off. Well done to Dr Karen and her staff, who were unable to attend the Scone-Off due to attending a medical emergency. Jenny and the Eiger team did send some scones down to the Medical Centre, where Dr Karen conducted her own tasting and judging session, albeit at 11pm whilst doing her paperwork! Ambulance Officer, Kent Hillier said, “The NSW Ambulance representatives have been very happy over the past four seasons to attend the Eiger Chalet Scone-Off, and to have a morning tea with Jenny Frost and her family and staff, and many of the local Perisher workers. “As Paramedics, we are very aware of the need for early public intervention in the case of a patient suffering from a sudden cardiac arrest outside of a clinical setting. The two mainstays of treatment are early chest compressions and early defibrillation. With this defibrillator, the community of Jindabyne and its many thousands of visitors, will have a better chance of successful resuscitation in the case of a cardiac arrest. We advise calling “000 as soon as possible. This will allow for an ambulance to be dispatched to the scene and, whilst it is on the way, a trained call-taker can guide bystanders through the process of treating the patient, Mr Hillier concluded. The scones are judged under the official CWA scone rules which stipulate criteria such external

characteristics (are the sides straight?), baking characteristics (evenly browned with a thin, golden crust top and bottom?) handling characteristics (breaks easily?) internal characteristics (moist texture with a good crumb?), as well as overall taste appearance and presentation. This very pleasant task was undertaken by no less than 14 judges on the day, two CWA officials, Lorraine Phillips and Terry Aiton, as well as local business owners and lodge managers. The scone recipe was the choice of each contestant, and this year they were all a traditional plain variety. This is the third year in a row that the Ambulance team have won the Scone-Off. The team members are local Alpine/Snowfields Operators, who work and cook out of the Perisher Valley Ambulance Station. The Head Chef is Mick Couvee, with his Assistants Geoff Boulton, Kent Hillier and Rohan Kilham. The winning technique from the Ambo’s kitchen was to get the oven on early, so the temperature is constant throughout. No butter was used in their scone recipe. CWA judge Lorraine Phillips commented “The best things about the winning scone, were the great sides, the lovely breaking ability and the lightness of the scone. The Firies team were relegated to second place, and will be aiming to correct that next year. There was some light-hearted discussion about lodging a protest, but in the spirit of this event it didn’t eventuate. Something about the sugar sprinklings. The Retained NSW Fire & Rescue team consisted of Jordan Frost (Jenny’s son), Adrian Gooley (Jenny’s son-in-law) and Ben Carey (manager of Cowra Lodge) and came third. Keith Hill, manager of Geebung Lodge in Perisher, was commissioned by Jenny to make a “scone tree trophy in 2014. The base is solid local quartz, with copper wire twisted and shaped to resemble a snow gum, allowing the branches to support the ‘lacquered’ winning scone from each year and its accompanying inscribed dog tag. Jenny confided that she had taken one scone from each team’s batch, written the team name on the underside and spray lacquered the scone samples outside on a table, where they would dry (the winning lacquered scone then adorns the trophy). Upon checking a while later, she found that the tin was in the snow, baking paper had blown away and one scone was missing. It appears the winning ‘Ambos’ scone had been scooped up by a crow and devoured, sticky lacquer and all! So, if you want to know who will win next year’s Eiger Chalet Scone-Off – just watch the crows!

If you would like to help the Eiger Chalet reach their fundraising goal, please contact Jenny Frost on (02) 6457 5209. The defibrillator for Jindabyne is within reach.

Australian Alpine Snowsports History Association unites resorts stories It is now six months since the very successful 2017 Australian Alpine Snowsports History Association (AASHA) Conference was held at Mt Hotham, over the weekend of 28th, 29th and 30 April. A record 44 people attended the conference, from Falls Creek, Mt Buller, Mt Hotham, Tasmania, Thredbo and Perisher Historical Societies… the best result to date. The annual meeting is an opportunity for historical societies, groups and individuals who share an interest in alpine history, to get together to and help improve advocacy for alpine sports collections, and allow for discussion on organisational and governance matters regarding alpine history. Friday night saw welcome drinks, followed on Saturday by the Annual Conference. Gunaikurnai Elder, Grattan Mullett Snr gave the Welcome to Country ceremony, followed by member groups giving us a short précis of their activities. Guest speaker, Malcolm MacPherson, delivered an informative history of Dinner Plain on Saturday, followed by Andrew Ramsay who spoke on his 10 Mt Hotham heroes, and lastly Malcolm Pearce spoke on his introduction to Mt Hotham, and what kept him there. The conference attendees enjoyed a casual dinner at the “The General” on Saturday night, and on Sunday, a wonderful tour of Mt Hotham, Dinner Plain and the area’s historic sites and landmarks, led by Andrew Swift of the Mt Hotham Resort Management Board. Mount Hotham Resort Management Board’s Cultural Heritage and Tracks & Trails Officer Andrew Swift said that the AASHA was an opportunity to bring alpine history into the current strategic plans and a great way to network with people who had a passion for alpine history. “All of the alpine resorts have really good alpine history, but the key to an event like this is to acknowledge the history and bring it back to the forefront of people’s thinking,” Mr Swift said.

The formal conference business resulted in the election of the 2018 committee: Alan Fredericks, President (Thredbo); Genevieve Fahey (NAMA Mt Buller); Christopher Brangwin (Perisher); *Andrew Swift (Mt Hotham);

Group Photo of AASHA attendees at Mt Hotham. Michael Wadsley (Southern Tasmania) and Graeme Holloway (Northern Tasmania). Observers: Robert Frohlich (Australian Indigenous Alpine Sports Foundation – AIASF) and Peter Southwell-Keeley (Perisher). NOTE: * Andrew Swift has since advised his resignation from Mt Hotham RMB and AASHA. The Committee have determined to fill the casual vacancy with Karen Smythe (Falls Creek). Mount Hotham Resort Management Board’s Cultural Heritage and Tracks & Trails Officer Andrew Swift said that the AASHA was an opportunity to bring alpine history into the current strategic plans and a great way to

network with people who had a passion for alpine history. “All of the alpine resorts have really good alpine history, but the key to an event like this is to acknowledge the history and bring it back to the forefront of people’s thinking,” Mr Swift said. “It is about the sharing of the knowledge and people being able to utilise their work, and help to promote their own historic works, and to encourage other people to be involved in this sort of thing,” Mr Swift added. The Perisher Historical Association committee looks forward to hosting the AASHA Conference at Perisher Valley, 4th to 6th May 2018. Planning is well advanced, with the conference venue and separate dinner venue booked. There has also been some planning undertaken to arrange a tour of historical interest for the final conference day. The conference is open to anyone with an interest in preserving the history of Alpine Skiing in Australia. For more information on the 2018 Conference at Perisher, please contact Pam Woodman, Secretary Perisher Historical Society, at phsadmin@iprimus. com.au or Alan Fredericks, President AASHA at alanf@ bigpond.net.au. Paddlers converge

for Snowy River Extreme Race

31 David Burgess SRER Media CoOrdinator October saw the second running of the SRER, the largest whitewater kayak event in Australia. With over 150 competitors from around Australia, France and the United States, this was the largest (and highest in terms of altitude) kayak race you have probably never heard of. It was celebrations aplenty at the Kosciusko National Park on October 1 with the running of the 2017 Snowy River Extreme Race (SRER) on the fabled Snowy River between Guthega and Island Bend. Organisers were thrilled with how the event unfolded with over 150 paddlers from all across Australia competing on the day. Paddlers could register in one of three different categories. These being ‘expert’ (grade 4 whitewater), ‘intermediate’ (grade 3) and ‘inflatable’(grade 3). For reasons of safety, teams of two paddlers raced along a nominated section of whitewater that had added safety personnel positioned at key rapids for extra support if needed. Phillip Gibbons and Ben Hankinson took out the ‘expert’ race in 10.21. Chris Schmidt and Steve Muir claimed the ‘intermediate’ race in a sizzling time and new race record of 8.18 and Katy Desa and Raurie Johnson won the ‘inflatable’ class in 10.32. Along with the Snowy River, the region boasts many other world class rivers and see paddlers travelling great distances to challenge themselves on the rapids. This year also saw the biggest release from Jindabyne dam a few days after the race and paddlers stayed around to paddle what was, at a peak flow of 13000 megalitres, the biggest environmental release to date. In only its second year, the SRER is proving a boon for the local economy with many paddlers and their families extending their visit in the Snowy Mountains and Monaro region. Organisers praised the efforts of Parks NSW and Snowy Hydro for their support as well as key sponsors ‘Random Adventure Gear’ and ‘Whitewater Adventures Nepal’. Full race results can found via the Snowy River Extreme Race Facebook page, and at; http://www.snowyriverextremerace.com.au/

L’Étape Australia expecting 5,000 riders for the 2017 race

Registration for entry in L’Étape closed on October 23. For more information visit letapeaustralia.com. The closest thing to experiencing Le Tour de France itself here in Australia, L’Étape is not to be missed by any cycling enthusiast. Organisers are encouraging cyclists to start their training now for the gruelling course. Many who entered in the in augural event last year underestimated the ride and had to pull out. ‘The Race’ course is 157km with an estimated completion time of between four and seven hours. The Race delivers a route that is as tough as a mountainous stage of the Tour de France, under full Tour de France Professional conditions and runs on fully closed roads. The highest point is 1,725m on Col de Kosciuszko. ‘The Ride’ is 126km and has an estimated completion time of three to six hours. The Ride is for those who wish to immerse themselves in the atmosphere and experience of L’Étape without the added pressure of the final Col de Kosciuszko climb. At 126km and a peak of 1,300m The Ride is still a significant challenge The start for both The Race and The Ride will be at the Bullocks Flat ski tube terminal in Crackenback. Participants for both routes will head off through

Jindabyne, towards Rocky Plains Road before turning towards Berridale for the sprint section down the main street of the town. The riders will then continue to Dalgety before reaching the difficult Col de Beloka climb. The Ride will then return to finish in Jindabyne while The Race participants will continue past Jindabyne up punishing Col de Kosciuszko to reach the finish at Perisher. Individual participants in The Race at L’Étape Australia will be provided the unique opportunity of competing for the authentic Tour de France jerseys. The yellow jersey will be presented to the first male and female individual to cross the finish line of The Race. The green jersey will be awarded to the male and female individual Race winners of the sprint section, set in the heart of Berridale. The polka-dot jersey will be presented to the individual male and female Race winners of the King of the Mountain, timed across on both the Col de Beloka and Col de Kosciuszko climbs. The white jersey will be presented to the first male and female individual to cross the finish line of The

Race aged 25 years or less on the day of the event. The local communities have truly embraced the Tour de France coming to the Snowy Mountains. The entire route is decorated with cycling paraphernalia, some exquisite works of art. The towns and villages have adopted the colours of the Tour de France: yellow (Jindabyne), green (Berridale) and polka dot (Dalgety). Last year thousands of locals lined the route with their cow bells, flags and encouragement; creating a wonderful ambience throughout the day. The atmosphere of the event is electric and very positive, with riders supporting one another throughout the day and spectators yelling encouragement from the sidelines. Chris Froome will be participating in the race again this year. Providing some clinics on Friday, and then riding from the back of the pack to the front on Saturday. While many have watched Chris Froome from the sidelines or on TV, few have had the opportunity to ride with him. The legendary voice of cycling Phil Liggett will be calling in the riders at the finish of The Race in Perisher, and Matt Keenan will be calling in the riders at the finish of The Ride in Jindabyne.

Snowy Access

When Claire Rogerson and her family travelled to the South Island of New Zealand with outdoor recreation sporting equipment, she found it difficult to hire a vehicle, or find transport that suited her activities and destination. On her return to the Snowy Monaro region, Claire realised that there was a need for this service in her own backyard, so she launched Snowy Access in winter of 2017.

TreX series is back

These events also double as world championship qualification rounds as well as the Australian National Championship. Located in the heart of Australia’s high country, and starting at an altitude of 1100m with Australia’s highest peak, Mt Kosciusko as the backdrop, the courses will both delight and challenge athletes of all levels. TreX XTri: The XTri course includes some of the best fast and flowing single track mountain bike trails, and gritty off road running trails found anywhere in Australia and includes a standard distance, sprint, junior, dirt kids, duathlon and aquabike courses. For the Australian XTri Championships, the course for 16 years and over begins with a 1500m swim, and then there is a 30km cross country mountain bike course, followed by a 10km trail run. The sprint course, for 14 years and over, is a 400m swim, 15km mountain bike ride and a 3.3km trail run. The Junior X-Tri is for 12-15 year olds and involves a 200m swim, 6km mountain bike ride and 1.5km run. The kids course is for 7-11 year olds and is a 50m swim, 1.5km mountain biking and 500m run.

In February 2018 the Snowy Mountains will come alive with more off road and on road action which this year will also include a new event to the TreX series with the Australian Aquathlon Championships and the Snowies Ultra Trail Run.

TreX On Road Aquathlon: The aquathlon is an on road event that takes place in beautiful Lake Crackenback resort and includes standard, sprint, junior, teaser and dirt kids events. “Quite simply it’s a run, swim, run. Aquathlon is a great way to get into the sport of triathlon. It doesn’t require a road or mountain bike, all you need are a pair of togs and a pair of running shoes, so it’s a great way for anyone to come along and try sport, especially our young champions of tomorrow,” said Race Director Simon Lazenby. The standard course (16 years and over) is a 2.5km trail run, a 1000m swim and another 2.5km trail run. The sprint (14 years and over) is a 2.5km run, 500m swim and 1.25km run. The junior event (12 years and over) is 1.25km trail run, 300m swim and 1.25km run. The Dirt Kids course is a 500m run, 300m swim and another 500m run.

Thredbo Valley. Beginning at Lake Crackenback Resort and Spa, it is a 20km trail run to Friday Flat, with a 24km trail run back to the resort. The run will present an epic challenge for our elite racers as they battle altitude, technical trails and all the Australian bush can dish out in this unforgiving terrain. However, along with the challenge comes great rewards. The backdrop for the race will be Australia’s highest peak, Mt Kosciuszko, and the expansive high country vistas that only the iconic Thredbo Valley can offer will be your adventure playground. Add to this the amazing river crossings, bridges and alpine terrain and you have a must-do when it comes to ultra trail running. The 44k Ultra is also accompanied by the 20k, 10.5k and 5k trail runs. The event is held on February 24 and 25 with entries closing on Wednesday February 21.

Snowies Ultra Trail Run: This ultimate trail running festival takes in some of the most spectacular running trails in Australia including the 44k Ultra which includes a 530m ascent and descent along the spectacular

Those who compete in all three events will be fighting for the title of Dirt Master and Dirt Mistress for 2018.

The Snowy Monaro hosts race events throughout spring and summer which attract huge crowds to the region. Our local races combine the excitement and glamour of traditional race events with the country charm and hospitality our region is famous for.

Tumut Tumut Turf Club is one of the oldest race clubs in NSW, having commenced racing in the 1850’s. Two impressive heritage grandstands are set amongst the trees, making the Tumut Turf Club one of the most picturesque locations for a day at the races. Tumut has three race meets coming up, kicking off with Derby Day on November 4. Enjoy live band entertainment, country and metropolitan bookmakers, full TAB facilities, as well as a barbecue, kiosk and bar. The Tumut racecourse is an ideal venue for Christmas parties, weddings, parties and other functions, and holds its second race event on Boxing Day.

Adaminaby Every year, thousands of keen race-goers travel from far and wide to attend the Adaminaby Races. Known for being a great family day out, Adaminaby offers fun and entertainment for both adults and kids. There are Fashions on the Field prizes for boys and girls 13 years and under, as well as adult categories, best dressed couple and best dressed group. This year, the theme for the races is ‘Hats and Heels’, with members and patrons encouraged to dress in their finery on November 25. The Adaminaby Races is one of the highlights of the Snowy Mountains social calendar, where more than 2,000 patrons gather to watch great racing, make new friends, and renew old friendships.

Cooma The Cooma Monaro Race Club is this year celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Sundowner’s Cup. The event is already extremely popular, and 2017 promises to be better than ever, with thousands of people travelling to Cooma on December 9. The main race was named in honour of the movie, ‘The Sundowners’, which was filmed in and around Cooma and Adaminaby in 1959. One thousand locals were extras at the Ti Tree Racecourse when the race scene was filmed for the movie. Head down to the Ti Tree Racecourse for the biggest race day in Cooma and arguably the biggest social event of the year!

Joining the Dots on The Bundian Way Glorious late spring skies and gentle seas were the backdrop for a walk and talk with local aboriginal guides at the coastal trailhead of the Bundian Way near Eden. A group of more than 30 community members from as far away as Queensland, Sydney and Colorado, met at Cocora Beach on Sunday September 24 with Yuin elder BJ Cruse, and guides Les Kosez and Aileen Blackburn, to discover more about the history and culture of the local aboriginal people, to share the pathway, and exchange knowledge and stories. The Bundian Way has always been an indigenous travelling and cultural route that connected the whale ceremonies at Bilgalera (Fisheries Beach on Twofold Bay) near Eden, to the Bogong Moth ceremonies at Targangal (Mt Kosciuszko). This 265km long track was shown to the early settlers in the mid 1800’s, by the Yuin people, as a safe trade route

through the Monaro and onto Ngarigo country. It came to the attention of historian John Blay, whilst researching in the district in 20012002. It was then, that overlooked maps from the mid 1800’s, were discovered in Sydney archives. In conjunction with the South East Aboriginal Lands Council, John Blay, began walking the whole of the Bundian Way, with community members, to map out the route between 2011 and 2014. The Bundian Way gained NSW Heritage listing in 2013, and subsequently the project scope was to create an ancient heritage trail, whereby both cultures could share the knowledge and history with respect, as it did in the past. Yuin Elder Ossie Cruse, who said in an interview with ABC journalist, Bill Brown, in 2014 “it will be a celebration of shared history and pathway to reconciliation”. The route coincided with many

any of the travelling stock routes (TSR’s) and the original camps for the aboriginal groups, around 12km apart, but it will take some time to extend it all the way to Mt Kosciuszko. There are numerous land tenure entities to negotiate with, so is envisaged that the trail will open in stages. To date, one section at Delegate, and this short 1.6km section at Twofold Bay, are the first two to be open to the walking public. By the time it is completed, the Bundian Way will be approximately 350km long. Local aboriginal community members on the works crew have shaped the timber decking at the lookout to resemble a whale’s tail. Under technical supervision, they are trained on the job by local contractors, and over 90 percent of the services and materials are locally sourced. The projected completion of the Eden Wharf Extension Project in

2019 promises huge potential for cultural tourism and employment opportunities for the local aboriginal community, mainly from the increased number of passenger cruise ships that will be docking at Eden Wharf. “The increased visitation will have a positive multiplier effects on the local regional economy” explained our guide Les Kosez. “This could become one of the Iconic regional walks in NSW” said David Shoebridge, MLC. When BJ Cruse spoke to the walking group, he said “it is a pathway that led our people to those in Omeo, to see a new corroboree”. “We hope that will bring a lot of healing to the reconciliation process too and we will be working together and seeing that we have a legacy left for our children’s children, for their future,” he said to Toni Houston in “The Peacemaker” Australian Story on ABC in July 2017.

John Blay’s book published in 2015 on the Bundian Way “On Track – Searching out The Bundian Way”.

Wild and beautiful seascapes, unique flora and fauna are key attractions of the walks in this area. In a short distance, the group saw whales breaching offshore, an echidna hiding in the sandy soil, a wallaby amongst the coastal forest, and a large goanna halfway up a tree.

Aileen Blackburn talks to the group about the significance and importance of passing on the oral history and knowledge to the next generation.

EXPLORE BOMBALA AND DELEGATE

GETTING THERE Take the Monaro Highway via Nimmitabel and stop for a coffee and a treat in this lovely little country town. There is no shortage of good old-fashioned country hospitality in Nimmitabel, and plenty of unique shops to explore. Alternatively, if you’re in the mood for the scenic route, head south out of Cooma via Church Road, which will link up with the picturesque Snowy River way, one of the most scenic roads in the region. Get up close and personal with the wind turbines as you drive through Boco Rock Wind Farm and keep an eye out for miniature donkeys at the iconic Jincumbilly railway station.

MORNING

LUNCH

Wonder down Maybe St and check out the many gift, garden and homeware stores. Take a stroll around Bombala’s scenic River Walk for some great photo opportunities and a leg stretch. Platypus season is well underway, with many locals reporting platypus sightings in the Bombala River and its adjoining creeks this spring. The Platypus Reserve is a great place to see them, with a large viewing platform set by the river, just five kilometres from Bombala. The reserve also offers two bird hides, which provide ideal spots to photograph bird life. For keen walkers, South East Forests are a great place to visit at this time of the year with new walks at Nunnock Swamp to explore. Myanba Gorge Lookout also provides beautiful views of the creeks and waterfalls as they cascade through the forest. Rockton Falls is a popular spot with the locals to cool down on a hot day, as well as White Rock River picnic area. Situated 30km south of Bombala in the south-western side of the National Park, White Rock River has picnic tables and barbeques set beneath a towering canopy of ribbon gums. As well as being easy on the eyes, this part of the park provides the habitat for the endangered longfooted potoroo.

Experience real country hospitality at one of Bombala’s lovely lunch spots. The locals love to chat and will often have a few recommendations of their own. After refuelling, head down to the Bombala Historic Railway Station, which is the most southern station on the GoulburnBombala line. The station is no longer in use and now houses a small museum and lavender distilling plant for visitors to explore.

Charlie Salvestro, Snowy Mountains Scheme worker – Cooma.

Ten years. ° Minus 15 C. Slept in a canvas tent. That’s 110% Australian. The Snowy Mountains Scheme was hailed as a Civil Engineering Wonder of the World. It achieved that title thanks to the grit of people like Charlie Salvestro, just 16 when he took the bus from Cooma to Guthega to ask for a job. Over ten years he worked in often freezing temperatures and many miles from the nearest beer. Red Energy is an all-Australian company owned by Snowy Hydro so, like Charlie, giving 110% is in our blood. That’s why we think the people of the Snowy Region deserve fair prices, genuine discounts and local award winning customer service.
