How’s the snow?
The view from dedicated skiers
The snow depth for the 2018 season is so far slightly lower than the biggest snow depth in the 2000s. In 2000 the snow depth measured by Snowy Hydro was approximately 250cm. As it happened 2017 came close to the highest snowfall reading with 239.7cm at Spencers Creek. Skiers wait with bated breath to see the final 2018 snowfall reading. On August 22nd the 2018 snowfall reading stood at 224.4cm. By all accounts 2018’s ski season has been a cracker. The SnowPost asked some local dedicated skiers their opinion of this year’s season.
Cross country skiing at Perisher According to Pip Greville, a dedicated cross country skier, the snow on the Perisher cross country ski trails is excellent this year, “It is deeper and of good quality because of the cold,” Pip said, “and when it is groomed it comes up really well.” “It makes cross country skiing even more enjoyable than it usually is and much easier to ski on.” Geraldine Blanch, the caretaker of the Perisher Nordic Shelter said there is plenty of snow of the trails although the windy weather is causing havoc with the grooming of the trails. “The wind blows the snow back onto the trails. However, we were so lucky this year with such an early start. “Here at the cross country trails we have to wait for the snow to fall out of the sky not like on the downhill slopes where snow can be man-made. “It looks like the ski season will go into the October school holidays unless we get rain on the snow. “We don’t measure the snow at the Nordic Shelter but we know it is very deep as some of our snow poles are almost buried and certainly our snow fences are buried. “All in all it is a great season for cross country skiing.”
Downhill skiing Downhill skiing at Thredbo at Perisher “It’s a really good season this year,” said Patrick Daley. Pat is a dedicated Perisher downhiller and travels from Canberra every weekend with his sons to enjoy the snow. “In other past seasons we have had to dodge exposed rocks on some of the runs but this year the deeper snow has covered the rocks and skiing has been really good. “We could have started skiing earlier this year with such good snow falls in June but I dislocated my elbow so skiing went on hold for a few weeks. “Hopefully the snow cover will hold and Perisher will extend the season, which would be excellent,” Pat said.
“It’s bloody tremendous,” is how Thredbo Resort aficionado Nick Kirshner describes the 2018 snow season. “It is busier than ever and I would say Thredbo Resort should think about extending the skiable area now that the population of Australia has risen to 25 million since the resort was planned in the 1950s. “With many people having more disposable income it would seem timely to extend.” Another local Thredbo skier, Chrissy Webb said the snow was excellent although the crowds are large on the weekends. “If it is windy I do not ski on the higher runs these days,” Chrissy said. Being the Thredbo Alpine Museum’s Honorary Administrator, Chrissy spends time at Thredbo and has been skiing Thredbo for many years.

Also on the lower slopes we will see a more direct access from the All-Mountain finish at Creek Station, taking riders directly back to the base of the Kosciuszko Express Chairlift, without having to use the road. Extreme fun in sr extreme race
The Snowy River Extreme Race is a whitewater kayaking event held on the Snowy River in Kosciuszko National Park. Far from being just a race, the event is Australia’s largest white-water kayaking community gathering with a fantastic vibe, bringing together over 150 kayakers from Tasmania to Queensland in 2017. Three race categories are held catering for a wide range of abilities; an intermediate race, an inflatable kayak and pack-raft race, and an expert race. This year also sees the introduction of female divisions to the races. The races are held on grade 3 and 4 white-water and entrants are required to demonstrate sufficient kayaking skills as well as race in pairs. This along with a dedicated safety team ensures participants’ safety. The 2018 Snowy River Extreme Race will be on Sunday the 30th of September, with preparations and practice laps taking place on the Saturday. The day kicks off at 8am with racer registration at Island Bend campground and finishes at roughly 5pm with winner announcements and a raffle prize draw for all entrants. After which everyone relaxes around a campfire to share stories. A BBQ and sausage sizzle will be held between getting back to Island Bend and the winners’ announcements. The races take place on the section of river between Munyang power station and Island Bend campground; the expert race is on a 2km section of grade 4 white-water starting at the ‘Can opener’ rapid and finishing at the ‘Rafter’s track’, the intermediate race starts just below this and covers a 1.7km section of grade 3 white-water finishing at the gauging station, and the inflatable and pack-raft race is held on the same section as the intermediate.
For more information on the event check us out on Facebook or at www.snowyriverextremerace.com.au.

Backcountry Guide educating guests on the Australian Main Range.
Goodbye resort, hello backcountry!
All smiles for this backcountry crew.
Getting Out the Back...beyond the Resort Boundaries Supported by The North Face, Thredbo Resort has launched its Backcountry Tours this season, with a steady rate of enquiries so far.
Guests can enjoy a guided Backcountry Adventure outside of the resort boundaries, where they’ll not only learn important backcountry safety skills, but also ski and board some incredible and unique terrain. Ranging from green, blue and black adventures, each tour caters to a different
Here are a few pointers… Who can participate? Guests must be strong intermediate to advanced skiers or boarders, capable of riding all snow conditions in a safe and confident manner. This includes windblown, powder, crud and icy conditions etc. You must also be able to ski trees, avoid obstacles and manage whiteout and very windy conditions. How fit do I have to be? A reasonable level of fitness is required, namely endurance and to a lesser extent strength. During the day out, you will be expected to cover 10-15km including 2-3km of climbing slopes of various grades. Make sure you get a good night’s sleep, have a solid breakfast and arrive hydrated. What about personal equipment? Guests need to dress for a full day’s skiing and carry or wear sufficient clothing to cater for extreme weather conditions. Goggles, helmet, a pair of quality waterproof gloves and dressing in layers is essential for comfort and safety, along with an extra ‘stuffable’ puffer jacket and plenty of water. Have a solid breakfast and bring lunch and plenty of snacks, a phone or camera and sun screen. Guests will be issued with a suitable touring pack in which you carry all your gear and additional essential safety equipment. When are the Tours? Backcountry Tours will run on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday each week from the beginning of July pending weather and snow conditions. What are the Minimum/Maximum Group size? Minimum 2 – Maximum 4. However, they are open to accommodating larger groups. Any inquires please email - snowsportsbookings@evt.com
level of knowledge and skiing or boarding ability. Our experienced guides have extensive backcountry knowledge from exploring the mountains for many years. They are first-aid trained, hold Avalanche Certification and carry appropriate emergency equipment. Every guest is provided with a North Face backcountry pack that contains a beacon, probe and shovel. Snowshoes, split-boards and touring skis are available for rental, so you don’t need to purchase any gear beforehand.
Adam Kronert enjoying all the Etheridge Ridge has to offer. Images provided by Thredbo Resort.
What about Equipment? All tours include the use of snow recovery gear, an avalanche transceiver and North Face day pack. You need to come with Alpine backcountry tours skis or board – or these can be hired from Thredbo Sports at $118 for 1 Day.
Who are the Thredbo Backcountry Tour Guides?
Lead Guide – Jake Iskov is a highly qualified former SAS soldier with extensive experience leading and training Army groups in the Australian Alps. Guide – Jennie Milton, a backcountry ski and snow kiting enthusiast with over 20 years’ experience touring in the Australian Alps, knows every little nook and cranny of the Main Range. Guide – Doug Chatten is a former Perisher Pro Ski Patroller, who ceased patrolling to focus on leading groups onto the Main Range.
What about Safety? Conditions rule - “we don’t run the backcountry… the backcountry runs us” - safety is paramount. Alpine touring is undertaken beyond the resort boundaries and there is usually no reliance on ski patrol or other immediate support. Weather and snow conditions are the two biggest safety factors that need to be continually monitored. The guides are experienced, and will make decisions accordingly to maximise the group’s safety. Although avalanches are rare and we have a relatively stable snowpack, you will be issued with a shovel, probe and beacon, and receive instruction in basic avalanche safety. What is the cost? A three Hour Snow Shoe Tour is $97.00 (includes rental). You also need to purchase a $19.00 snowshoe tour pass. All Backcountry Tour Pricing is located here: https://www.thredbo.com.au/ activities/backcountry-adventures/backcountrytours/ .

Mumm and the Girls Dominate the Iconic Thredbo Top to Bottom 2018
Olympians and local legends claim the prestigious title It’s long, fast and early, it makes your eyes water and your thighs burn and this year a record field of riders lined up for the experience. Australia’s longest downhill race, the iconic Thredbo Top to Bottom, presented by Mumm, was run and won last month in ideal conditions.
This was the 28th running of the iconic race, there were 286 competitors across eight categories racing to the finish line for their share of the $25,000 in cash and prizes. The event saw a stacked field of current and past Olympians along with everyday riders ranging in ages 18 to over 70 years. There was a snow storm brewing as competitors lined up at 1937m above sea level, ready to run, race and drop 600 vertical metres to the large crowd waiting in the village below. “This was one of best Top to Bottom races we have had. The weather was ideal and the snow conditions were fantastic. The course had 35 control gates, we opened it up adding longer straights giving more opportunities for overtaking making for exciting racing” said Adam Hosie Thredbo Snow Sport Director and Chief of Course. Olympic silver medallist, snowboarder Jarryd Hughes, raced his first top to bottom, coming in a smooth second to last year’s winner Jye Kearney. “What a race, a high altitude sprint in your snow
gear then a race to the bottom, lucky I have been in training for the Olympics, a great event. I will be back next year.” Olympian Scott Kneller used his home mountain advantage by leading all the way and notching up his seventh win of the open men’s event. “I was sixth in the run, then hit the lead at the top and maintained it to the finish. I love this event, coming up with your friends, on the mountain before the sun rises and head to head racing on a long fresh course, there is nothing like it” said Kneller. In the hotly contested women’s snowboard, local Wiki Jones was riding for her sixth victory but was pipped on the line by Jindabyne young gun boardercross rider Georgia Baff. “I love racing Wiki, I knew it would be tough she’s so fast. I’m pumped to take the win - super fast, super fun and great vibes” said Georgia. It was a big day out for World Cup ski racer Zali Offord who blitzed the open women’s ski field to take the win.
“You just have to go fast, there is no pacing, you just have to go hard the whole way down” she said. Revving up the racers was a large slopeside crowd who gathered at Kareela Hutte for a champagne breakfast, magic sunrise and front row seats to the action. On the other side of the mountain it was the ultimate party with non-stop champagne showers, Australia’s best artists and a snow covered village. Après at its best… Mumm hosted their Red Sash Sets at the Thredbo Alpine Hotel for the biggest party of winter with a 600 strong crowd of racers, spectators and guests all enjoying the pumping beats from Sweet Mix Kids, Motez and one of Thredbo’s all-time favourites, Hayden James. The Top to Bottom showcases Thredbo’s long runs and vertical terrain, it really does test even the strongest riders. The big bonus is you are on the mountain on dawn and get to ride it at your own speed.

A taste of Talbingo
13
With beautiful waterways for fishing and boating, Talbingo is a lovely escape in the NSW Snowy Mountains. A gateway to marvellous Yarrangobilly Caves and a natural thermal pool, the town is a great base too for getting to the Mount Selwyn snowfields in the skiing and snowboarding season. Famous Australian author Miles Franklin was born at Talbingo in 1879. To make way for the Snowy Mountains Scheme, Australia’s greatest engineering project that creates hydroelectricity, the small township was relocated in 1968 before the original location was flooded under Jounama Pondage. On the edge of Kosciuszko National Park, Talbingo is between Blowering Dam to the north and Talbingo Dam to the south – two popular waterways for fishing and water sports. You’ll find many more things to do and see in and around Talbingo, including bushwalking and mountain biking. Tumut 3 Power Station is below Talbingo Dam. There are 4WD touring routes in Kosciuszko National Park. Lobs Hole Ravine 4WD trail meanders through the wilderness in the Tumut region to Wallace Creek lookout for breathtaking views. Other spectacular lookouts are Black Perry and Landers Falls. The limestone caves and natural thermal pool are only 40 minutes’ drive south of Talbingo, in the national park. The limestone dates back 440 million years, and the magnificent caves are filled with wondrous formations of stalactites and stalagmites, and delicate cave corals and exquisite shawls. Guided tours are available of the caves. For a rejuvenating dip in the natural thermal spring waters rising from the depths, take the Yarrangobilly Caves Thermal Pool walk. The spring waters are naturally heated at 27 degrees year-round, perfect for steamy winter bathing surrounded by snow. You can stay at Yarrangobilly Caves House, a grand heritage house. In Talbingo there are more accommodation options to suit various budgets, including camping, caravanning, cottages, holiday units and a motel. Getting to Talbingo from Tumut is easy, with the scenic drive only 30 minutes.

Over 28,000 people can’t be wrong in thinking that the new NSW National Parks app makes visiting the state’s most popular national parks and reserves much easier with information and maps ready to explore at your fingertips. National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Director Visitor Experience, Julie Bishop said the beauty of many of our national parks is their remoteness and diverse landscapes but the very nature of these natural spaces means they are often outside current mobile networks. “The new NSW National Parks app is already a hit with the state’s national parks visitors,” Ms Bishop said. “Visitors can download maps and information on 225 of our parks before they go and have this information handy when they get there – even in areas with no reception, internet or Wi-Fi. “This is one of the ways that the NSW Government is making information more digitally accessible
for people wanting to get out and explore our national parks. “The app utilises geolocation features so people can find parks and attractions close by as well as further afield, so they can better plan their trip while they’re on the go. “Additional features include browsing and locating campgrounds, cabins and homesteads in the surrounding area – all at a glance. “Users can also discover things to do and see, exploring nearby activities and attractions like a local. “The app can also be used to check the attractions that have toilets, picnic areas and other facilities as well as information on accessibility,” Ms Bishop said. Parks, activities and accommodation can also be saved as favourites, so users can quickly access their favourite things to do and see in national parks at the touch of a button.
The FREE NSW National Parks app is now available for download on iOS and Android. For more information visit https://www. nationalparks.nsw.gov.

g n i h s i f Fly Fly Fish Australia NSW/ACT chapter will be kicking off the 2018/2019 State Championships Competition Fly Fishing season with their first round to be held on October 13 and 14 on Lake Jindabyne out of the Kalkite area. This event will be conducted out of boats as a Loch style event where competitors will compete in four three-hour sessions over two days. Fly Fish Australia Incorporated (FFA) is a not for profit association of members which was formed in 1989 and became the recognised body by the International Federation of Sport Fishing for the purpose of selecting teams to represent Australia. Our primary objectives are to promote and develop the sport of fly fishing, the practice of catch and release methods along with sustainable fishing and conservation of the environment and conduct fly fishing competitions to determine champion anglers who will represent Australia at international fly fishing competitions. FFA is made up of State Chapters, NSW/ACT, QLD, VIC, WA, SA and TAS who are all responsible for running competitions and generating funding to support such activities. This year’s state championships are made up of four rounds, with round two to be held on October 27 and 28 as a combination of two Loch style sessions and two rivers sessions taking in the Eucumbene Lake/
Murrumbidgee River areas of the Snowy Mountains. The river section will be using the renowned Bolaro Station sector of the Murrumbidgee River which has been previously used for multiple Australian National Fly Fishing Championships and the 1995 FIPS Mouche World Fly Fishing Championships. Round three will be in the Snowy Mountains region as another Loch style event with four three-hour sessions on March 2 and 3, and round four will be held on the Tumut River on April 13 and 14 as an all river event with four two-hour sessions. In addition to these four rounds, the NSW/ACT chapter of FFA are also responsible for hosting the 2019 National Championships which will also be held here in Snowy Mountains region from May 22 to 25, taking in locations like the Tumut and Murrumbidgee Rivers, Lake Eucumbene, Tantangara Reservior and Talbingo/ThreeMile Dam. This event will attract 60 of the best Fly Fishing anglers from all parts of Australia and promises to be a well contested and exciting event. For more information on each round of this year’s State and National Championships or how one could get involved with competition Fly Fishing please visit the FFA website http://flyfishaustralia.com.au

fundraiser for Snow Safety MONARO MEDIA GROUP
GRAPIC ARTISITS
Image from Backcountry Film Festival website Mountain Sports Collective kicked off in October 2017, and now has around 250 members. At a recent fundraiser screening of the Backcountry Film Festival at Jindabyne Central School, Adam West explained the goals of the organisation. For the last four years, Adam West operates Snow Safety Australia, collecting data and publishing the results on backcountry snow conditions. He became a Director of MSC when it formed last year. “The backcountry community is growing fast and we do get fatalities here in Australia. We aim to have no deaths in the backcountry relating to alpine safety. Our aim is to keep the community safe and well informed and educated” said Adam.
P: 6452 0313 | E: jess@monaropost.com.au Mr West said “The response to MSC from the back-country skiing community has been very positive. All other major ski areas in the world have a government funded program. We have 7 directors of the Not for profit all donating our time and skills”. MountainSportsCollective.org is a community led snow safety initiative to help better inform backcountry users of the prevailing weather and snowpack conditions. “In the mountains, you are responsible for the decisions you make. Take care out there.” For more information about backcountry safety see www.snowsafety.com.au/ team.html or to become a member of Mountain Sports Collective, see: mountainsportscollective.org

Paddlers still talk about the “Tumut that has been gaining momentum since its revival in 2015. In the 1970s, it was a popular race and the local community is thrilled to have it back as a highlight of Tumut’s events calendar.
The Tumut River Race is back this year on Sunday 14 October. For those who just want to enjoy the river, a community fun paddle (noncompetitive) has been included in the program. This group paddle is ideal for anybody who just wants to enjoy the river and have a bit of fun. Everybody is eligible for fantastic spot prizes. Make a weekend of it and camp on Friday and Saturday night on the Goobarragandra River. Race organiser Peter McIntyre and the team hope to have a paddle on the
Goob on Saturday and a float on the Tumut. Apart from a few sections, the river is very fast flowing flat water which winds its way up through farms and poplar plantations. The 25-kilometre section from Blowering Dam to Tumut Township (Turf Club) has no rapids, however the water is fast flowing, crystal clear and may be cold. Entry fee for the race is $25 or $15 for the community fun paddle. Those who are not members of Paddle Australia can pay a fee
covering insurance. You can register on the day, however there is an additional late fee to cover the admin costs. Event briefing at the start near the Dam Wall at 10am and race commences at 10.30am. Presentation of spot prizes at the end of the day and there are good toilet facilities and a coffee shop nearby. Please register asap by emailing peterm@pmaccountingsolutions. com.au by Wednesday October 10.

airbnb having an impact Increasing house prices, increasing visitation numbers and the emergence of short-term rental platforms such as Airbnb have had a huge impact on the real estate market in Jindabyne and the Snowy Mountains. According to local real estate agencies, house prices in Jindabyne have increased by 20 to 30 percent over the last two years. Growing demand for rental accommodation, particularly during winter is an ongoing issue. “There is a huge demand, but no more than any other ski or seasonal area in the world,” said principal of First National Real Estate Kosciusko, Gordon Jenkinson. “It’s an ongoing issue in a place like Jindabyne.” The Snowy Mountains is increasing in popularity as a holiday destination, receiving over 1.5 million visitors from April 2017 to March 2018, up five percent from the previous year, and up 41 percent compared to 2010. According to Mr Jenkinson, people are buying real estate in the area primarily for lifestyle, rather than commercial investment. “Our ski season is only 16 weeks long, so you’re not getting the commercial return you would in somewhere in North America, where the seasons are at least six months,” he said. Mr Jenkinson said the Australian alpine areas are getting more popular in summer, particularly with mountain biking, but it will be a long time before the summer season generates more capital. One of the positive impacts of a competitive buyer’s market has been the ripple effect on the surrounding areas of Berridale and Dalgety. According to realestate.com, the average house price in Jindabyne is $624,000, compared to $305,000 in Berridale and $387,000 in Dalgety. “Berridale has seen increases in line with Jindabyne,” Mr Jenkinson said. “There are lots of young couples who have been priced out of the market in Jindabyne buying in Berridale. It’s still not too far to drive if you’re working in the mountains.”
Zoning has a significant impact on real estate markets and Mr Jenkinson said it is incredibly important for councils to plan for growth. “There needs to be a strategic plan,” he said. “How council treats the zones is critical.” “Some larger R5 zoning won’t be popular with buyers outside the area because it will only allow for permanent rentals. Anything over 12 weeks is considered permanent.” Short-term rental platforms like Airbnb, which first launched in Australia in 2012, are also having an impact. “Airbnb in its purest sense is renting out a room in a house,” Mr Jenkinson said. “But it has now morphed into short term letting of an entire house without DA approval. “There has got to be more control.” Snowy Monaro Regional Councillor Peter Beer said there are other issues associated with Airbnb. “A few years ago, Jindabyne residents started noticing more cars parked in the street and put it down to houses being used as Airbnb rentals,” Mr Beer said. “There could be four or five cars at a single house, depending on the number of families.” Residents are concerned that garbage trucks and emergency vehicles will not be able to access properties due to the number of cars on the street. “Those subdivisions were not designed for this much traffic,” Mr Beer said. Prior to becoming a councillor, Mr Beer was director of environmental services for the former Snowy River Shire and Cooma Monaro Shire councils, specialising in development. He agrees that it is vital for councils to have effective strategic plans to prepare for growth. “Our situation is similar to Byron Bay, which has a much larger population in the summer months.” he said. “We as a council should be keeping in contact with Byron Bay as they are a few years ahead of us in this issue,” Mr Beer said. “We are a country town with urban issues which we as a council and community have to deal with.”

facilities, as well as a barbeque, kiosk and bar. The Adaminaby Races is one of the highlights of the Snowy Mountains social calendar, where more than 2000 patrons gather to watch great racing, make new friends, and renew old friendships. Known for being a great family day out, Adaminaby offers fun and entertainment as well as a different theme which inspires some wild and wacky outfits. This year’s theme is ‘the good, the bad and the glamourous’. Cooma’s Ti Tree Racecourse will host arguably the biggest event on Cooma’s social calendar on December 8. Last year the Sundowner’s Cup race celebrated its 25th anniversary, with huge crowds enjoying a perfect summer’s day in Cooma. This year will be no different, with everyone getting dressed to the nines for this popular race day.
Our local races combine the excitement and glamour of traditional race events with the country charm and hospitality our regions are famous for. It all kicks off with the Bombala Races on October 20, the same day as the Caulfield Cup. The feature race, the Bombala Cup is hotly contested each year and 2018 will be no exception. The six-race program normally attracts a big crowd, with marquees available to book, bookies, refreshments, a luncheon pavilion and good fields. On November 3, Tumut Derby Day brings together the best of spring racing. Two impressive heritage grandstands are set amongst the trees, making the Tumut Turf Club one of the most picturesque locations for a day at the races. TWO FULL DAYS OF BUSKING FUN Nov 3 & 4 Cooma, NSW
The Australian National Busking Championships
The Australian National Busking Championships are in their seventh year, and it is going to be bigger than ever. With the addition of the second day, the town of Cooma will be able to enjoy the wonderful atmosphere this event creates for even longer. The variety of acts the buskers offer is extraordinary. Musicians of all different styles come from across the country to compete. Music genres such as, country, blues, rock, pop, jazz, folk, alternative and classical music, are all on display. Non-musical acts such as jugglers, dancers and magicians have also featured in previous years. Who knows what amazing talent will come out of the woodwork next. Not to mention the local talent, which is always surprising to witness. Spectators are able to wander the streets, listening to this variety of buskers performing in 30 different locations. They can stop and sit outside a café with a delicious coffee and snack while the competitors entertain them. It’s like attending a unique music festival, and it’s all for free. There will be over $12,000 up for grabs in prizes for the buskers, thanks to the support
of local businesses. The People’s Choice is a very special award that is decided by the spectators. By purchasing a Busker Vote for $1 from the Cooma Rotary Club Stall or roaming sellers, you vote for your favourite busker by placing your vote in their collection container, whether it be a hat or a guitar case. You can also throw real money into the collection containers if you would like to show further appreciation for your favourite busker. The votes will be collected and counted by event officials throughout the day and the top three buskers will be presented with the award at the Finals Concert. Since beginning, the Australian National Busking Championships have had several towns come on board for the Regional Championships, including Stanthorpe and Noosa in Queensland, Ballarat in Victoria, and Narooma, Peak Hill and Gundagai in NSW. There has also been interest from other towns, with organisers hoping it will grow to become a real national event.
THE ROTARY CLUB OF COOMA PROUDLY PRESENTS
Bigger and better Cooma’s annual busking festival has grown into a double-banger, with two days of action this November 3 and 4. The Australian National Busking Championships Inc. made the exciting announcement in August and it has been well received by buskers and spectators alike. The local competitors will battle it out in the Regional Championships and Concert judging on Saturday, while the National Championships and Concert for the whole competition will be held on Sunday. The Saturday will be an all day event with the final concert beginning at 3pm with a completion at 4pm and the Sunday will be a morning event with the final concert beginning at noon with a completion at 1pm. There are three age categories (Open Adult, Secondary and Primary School Age), Best Band, Best School Group, Blues Music Award, Special Judges Awards and of course the hugely popular Peoples Choice Awards. Those who place first in each category in each Regional Championship compete in the National Championship on Sunday November 4. Plans are that this will become a major event for Cooma adding to overnight accommodation and providing a boost to local business. A total of seven Regional Competitions are now held in NSW, Victoria and Queensland. There are potentially another five locations in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia. The organisers are hoping local business, which has supported the festival for the past seven years, will continue to make this an ongoing major event for the region. The festival coincides with the annual Snowy Ride, making for a very full weekend for Cooma and region.

$12,000 These Regional Championships take place throughout the year with the winning buskers coming to Cooma for the National Grand Final on Sunday November 4, the second day of a massive weekend of busking fun. Entering the competition is $20 for individuals, $40 for duos and $50 for groups. Entry is free for the national finalists. With most buskers not having a great deal of money, this is a small cost for the opportunity to win thousands of dollars in prize money. The Australian National Busking Championships provides an opportunity for these performers to display their talents to a wider audience. It has led to further opportunities for many of the previous winners such as The String Family, Haystack Mountain Hermits, Oscar Litchfield, Vendulka (who went on to compete in the X Factor) and Lucy Sugerman (who went all the way through to the Grand Final of The Voice), and many others. Who knows what talent will be discovered this year. Mark the dates in your calendar and plan a trip to Cooma for the Australian National Busking Championships - it is not to be missed.

SNOWY MOUNTAINS TROUT FESTIVAL The Snowy Mountains Trout Festival is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year, with the competition running from Saturday 3 November to Friday 9 November. Formerly the Adaminaby Trout Festival, the event has continued to grow and thrive since its inception in the early 1970s, with many loyal fishermen taking part year on year. Festival president Richard Burton said fishing has changed over the years, but local fisheries have kept the lakes well stocked and helped bring tourism to the area. “This year, low lake levels will make for better, easier fishing, which is a big plus for the tournament,” Richard said. The festival has been steadily growing for the past five years, with around 800 contestants, plus friends and family flocking to the lakes of the Snowy Mountains. “It’s a fun week for a lot of people who have been doing it for a long time,” Richard said. “Now, we’re starting to see the next generation come
through and the kids of long-time entrants taking part.” To celebrate the 45th anniversary of the festival there will be over $30,000 worth of prizes on offer. The major lucky draw prize is a 2018 Quintrex 370 Explorer with a 15hp four stroke Yamaha motor and trailer. This is valued at over $10,000 and is proudly supported by Riverina Marine Centre, Wagga Wagga. Second prize is a fishing kayak and accessories package valued at $3,000 – proudly supported by Compleat Angler Merimbula. Third prize is a battery-operated car fridge valued at $1000 – proudly supported by Blue Sky Outdoor Cooma. Fourth prize is an accommodation package valued at over $800 – proudly sponsored by Buckenderra Holiday Village. To win, simply enter this year’s event and attend the presentation to be in the lucky draw. The presentation will be held at the Adaminaby Town Square on Friday 9 November.

Luxurious Hutwoods candles, Olieve & Olie skincare, Splosh canvas prints, Sass clothing, Betty Basics, Fable and much-loved Nest of Pambula jewellery are just some of the perfect pieces you’ll find. Annie has always loved finding unique home wares, clothing and gifts and introduced a collection into
the Berridale Post Office. “It gave me an opportunity to show a bit of my personality and have a play,” Annie said. Now with an entire shop to play with, Annie has let her personality shine through, and customers are loving the result. “I’m heartened by the way people are embracing what I’m wanting to do,” she said. Annie is still working full time at the post office and The Perfect Piece is her weekend project. “It’s so enjoyable for me - I don’t see it as work.” With no time to go away and visit stockists, Annie has grown her collection from online stores. “I’ve basically been trolling Instagram and finding
beautiful shops online!” She said. Annie will keep the new stock rolling in to ensure locals and travelling customers will always find something new and different in store. “The range will continue to grow and brands will come and go,” she said. “If there’s something different a customer is interested in, I’ll try and source it.” The Perfect Piece is open Saturday and Sunday 10am to 2pm. Find it at Shop 3, 72 Jindabyne Road Berridale, next to Whisk and Cocoa. “Grab a coffee, then come over and have a browse!” Annie said.

Come along for a Jam at Jingellic
41
Jamming at Jingellic is a unique event which celebrates the produce, hospitality and beauty of the Snowy Valleys and Upper Murray regions.
The event is staged at the Jingellic Showgrounds; the gateway between Southern NSW and North-East Victoria. The picturesque venue has huge historic plane trees which provide shade over sweeping green lawns, clear views to the gentle hills which surround Jingellic village and to the South, the Murray River sparkles and sings.
Is your brew best? Best ‘Brew with a Beat’ Brew 2018: a home brew competition to showcase your hidden talents featuring artisan beer, cider and spirits. Jingellic Show Society is presenting a Home Brew competition as an important aspect of Jamming at Jingellic - Brew with a Beat. The event encourages all home brewers in the Upper Murray and beyond to present their best brew for assessment by a panel of judges.
During Jamming at Jingellic the lawns will be dotted with marquees and food vans offering locally produced gourmet food, fine wines and boutique brews, something to tantalise a discerning palate. Live music by Mollie Waters, White Dog and the Reedman and Drammin will provide an auditory treat and a soundtrack for the event.
A photographic display of imaginative images of aspects of the region will inspire and pique interest in the local environs and a show and shine of vintage and classic cars will keep the mechanical minds engaged. Heady aromas of delicious food, boutique wines and brews from the Tumut River Brewing Company will tempt the taste buds.
A picture paints a thousand words The Jewel of the Murray photo competition seeks high quality images that encapsulate the essence of living and visiting the region: The scenery, secret beauty spots, characters, events, excitement and the routine of rural living. The organisers anticipate that stunning images will intrigue the viewer and encourage them to come back and explore the region.

Registered on the National Estate, the historic homestead was built around 1895. On approach to Currango, you’ll see the majestic pines that line the driveway, while resident kangaroos relax on the lawns. Running by solar power and with no mobile phone signal to distract from your break, you can experience the rustic charm of station life in this beautifully restored homestead. When you’re ready to explore, saddle up the horses and start your adventure along one of the trails accessible from Currango Homestead. If you’re after more heart-pumping action, go mountain biking to Oldfields Hut and other historic huts in the area.
Daffodil Cottage was once the overseer’s residence for the historic Currango Homestead. Located high in Kosciuszko National Park, it now offers a glimpse of life on a pastoral station in the rugged high country, over 100 years ago. With no mobile phone reception, it’s the perfect getaway from the modern world. Have a cuppa on the shady verandah and watch the kangaroos grazing on the lawns. Explore the majestic plains and rugged mountains of the Australian Alps along a range of walking tracks, or experience Yarrangobilly Caves. Try your luck at fishing in the crystal clear mountain streams, or saddle up your horse and ride the trails in true pioneer fashion. In the evening, you’re bound to taste the difference as you’re tucking into a mouth-watering roast cooked on the heritage woodstove.
For a reminder of the important things in life, try this rustic getaway, high in the Australian Alps in Kosciuszko National Park, near Adaminaby. The Pines Cottage is part of an historic complex of buildings, dating back to the late 1880s. Originally built to provide accommodation for stockmen, it’s perfect for large groups. Once you’ve unloaded the car, breathe in that clean, crisp mountain air and take in the sweeping plains under the curious gaze of kangaroos grazing on the lawn. From here, you can explore the high country with a wide range of activities that include walking, horse riding, mountain biking and fishing. When the sun sinks and the night fills with stars, it’s time to head indoors, stoke up the wood stove, and cook up a feast fit for a stockman.

If a regular marathon is just not enough, the extreme running enthusiasts among us can take part in the Hume and Hovell Ultra, which offers 100mile, 100km, 50km and 22km tracks. All options are run on a section of the historic Hume and Hovell walking track, which closely follows the route taken by explorers Hume and Hovell on their 1824 expedition to Port Phillip Bay. The entire walking track starts at Cooma Cottage near Yass and finishes at Hovell Tree in Albury, some 440km in length. The start and finish of the Ultra is at Henry Angel Trackhead, 9km south of Tumbarumba on the Tooma Road. The track is a mixture of constructed walking track and fire trails. The highest point is over 1200 metres in elevation, with many scenic natural attractions along the course including Buddong Falls, Paddys River Dam, alpine snow gums, and Mannus Lake. Located in the stunning Snowy Mountains, the Hume Hovell Ultra will challenge your ability as well as inspire your success. Snowy Ride still honours Steven Walter’s wish
The annual Snowy Ride will be held on November 2-4 this year. The Snowy ride is a motorcycle event that has helped the Steven Walter Children’s Cancer Foundation (SWCCF) raise in excess of $7 million for research into a cure for childhood cancer. All money raised by SWCCF goes to childhood cancer research programs and support of children with cancer. The aim of the Snowy Ride was to involve the motorcycle riders of Australia into raising money for research into childhood cancer and its side effects and to give the local volunteer organisations of the Snowy mountains area the chance to raise money for their own communities. Since the inaugural Snowy Ride in 2001, more than 40,000 riders and pillions have participated, spending more than $20 million in the region. The Snowy Ride is the largest motorcycle charity ride in Australia and has contributed more to motorcycle tourism in the Snowy Mountains Region than any other activity. The Snowy Ride works on a checkpoint system using eight checkpoints set in the towns of Cooma, Jindabyne, Thredbo, Adaminaby, Dalgety, Berridale, Charlotte Pass and Bombala. Each checkpoint is set up or supported by a local community group, who run their own fundraising events in conjunction with The Snowy Ride. All money raised by these groups at the checkpoints stays with each local group. For some communities, such as Adaminaby Public School, these activities constitute their major fundraiser for the year. We believe that’s one of the reasons why the Snowy Ride has been and continues to be so successful. In our minds, it’s a two-way street. Whilst we receive such invaluable support from the region, we also give back in many ways - through stimulating the local economy, helping local communities with fundraising, and by showing thousands of motorcyclists the amazing places there are to visit in this region. And even more importantly to us – the Snowy Ride, with the wonderful support of our riders, volunteers, sponsors and supporters has made a
significant contribution to childhood cancer outcomes and research programs. The Snowy Ride supports the Steven Walter Foundation (SWCCF). Steven came to realise that life was not measured by quantity of years, but by quality of living. Steven’s love of riding never wavered, he was instrumental in the creation of the NSW Junior Enduro series, he won a NSW Enduro Championship, he rode in an Australian Four Day Enduro (A4DE), and even though going through treatment for his cancer at the time, finished with the silver medal. Steven Walter was passionate about many things in life; family, friends, a love of the great outdoors and in particular – motorcycles, he was just nine when he began riding. At age 11 Steven was diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma, he had cancer, but Steven wanted to live, and he always showed amazing courage that belied the adversity he faced. Steven was only 19 years old in the year 2000 when he died after his heroic eight-year fight against cancer. Although still only a teenager when he died, Steve had made a huge impact on so many people. He was a guy who would never shirk his responsibilities, he would never just stand back and watch, he was always a participant and it showed in what he achieved in his short life. In his final days Steven wrote a powerful letter asking his family to organise a charity motorcycling event “to raise money for research into childhood cancer so that one day no other kid will have to go through what I’ve been through”. It is because of this extraordinary young man’s determination, his passion for life and love of motorcycles that his family, friends and others have gone on to create SWCCF. Why? “Currently, governments do not fund the clinical trials research that will take the cure rate to 100 percent. Thus, we are seeking community support, to be able to provide world’s best therapy for Australian children diagnosed with cancer.” Professor Glenn Marshall AM Director, Kids Cancer Centre Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick Steven Walter Children’s Cancer Foundation is determined to continue to fulfil Steve’s final wish.

The Good, The Bad and The Glamourous
The Adaminaby Races are one of the region’s biggest annual events, with thousands of people travelling from far and wide to enjoy a day at the races with friends and family. Known for being a great family day out, Adaminaby offers fun and entertainment for both adults and kids. There are Fashions on the Field prizes for boys and girls 13 years and under, as well as adult categories, best dressed couple and best dressed group. For the past 18 years, a theme has been chosen for the race day, with patrons going all-out in wild costumes and glamourous attire. This year, the theme is ‘the good, the bad and the glamourous’, which will undoubtedly invite some aweinspiring ensembles and play to the advantage of those entering the Fashions on the Field. The devoted committee and local volunteers have been busy refreshing buildings, stables and grounds in preparation for this year’s event. The
town’s population will swell from 200 to over 2,000 as people gather for reunions, family gatherings and a great day out at the races. The first Adaminaby Races were held in 1864 and continued for 100 years until the construction of the Snowy Scheme required the Adaminaby township to be moved to make way for Lake Eucumbene. The original racecourse buildings were transported to the current location in 1964 and have been maintained by the dedicated Adaminaby Jockey Club ever since. Last year, the event was rained out, but that didn’t stop loyal racegoers getting dressed in their finery and kicking on at the legendary Snow Goose Hotel. The 2018 Adaminaby Races are shaping up to be a wonderful day, with events such as the Calcutta on Friday night, music, food, bar facilities and many other attractions on the day.

Jindabyne Cycling Club Launches
This summer, Jindabyne Cycling Club will launch an exciting new initiative, providing skills for fledgling junior road riders. The club will form a junior race team, provide older juniors, seniors and masters with a new training opportunity and all club members and their families with a weekly social get together over a BBQ. JCC Wednesday nights will be in addition to the current Sunday Club Ride and any other training rides organised in the lead up to L’Etape and will be an ongoing part of the Club’s program. The initiative is the brainchild of current Club Road Manager/ Cycling Australia Commissaire Gary Pearson and Club Coach-elect Karen Forman, and will launch on Wednesday October 17, 2018. Jindabyne Sport and Recreation Centre has come on board as a sponsor, providing the facility, a 400-metre bitumen oval cycling track and other facilities free of charge until the end of the year. It is a first for the club and will bring the club into line with the best Cycling Australia affiliated clubs in both metropolitan and country NSW. Not only will it provide services to our local members and future members, but also offer a training opportunity for visiting riders who are accredited with Cycling Australia and even perhaps an entertainment offering for cycling fans. The three facets of the initiative are:
Junior Development Program This program will be run on the velodrome at Sport and Rec each Wednesday from 4.30pm to 5.45pm. Exciting New
Summer Programme

100-Lapper This exciting event will be held from 6pm to 7pm following the completion of the junior development program, and run over 100 laps, or 40km on the 400-metre cycling track at Jindabyne Sport and Rec. It will provide riders from Under 17 through elite to Masters with a training opportunity unlike any other currently available in the region. All riders must have a road bike (no flat bars), an approved helmet, gloves and riding kit, plus currently hold a Cycling Australia Ride or Race Licence (no exceptions). Bike and helmet checks will be conducted prior to the start, and itis advisable to wear glasses for eye protection. Prior to the start of each session (5:45pm), riders will be briefed by Club Commissaire Gary Pearson and Club Coach-elect Karen Forman on safety aspects. Any riders deemed unsafe will be pulled from the session, due to the nature of what will be a fastpaced, tight bunch riding experience. The event will see riders move in single file around the track in an anticlockwise direction. The rider at the
front will hold tempo at around 2530km an hour and on reaching the start/finish line after one lap, will look behind and then proceed to the back of the group (on the outside/right hand side) with the second in line taking over the leadership for the next lap. The first 50 laps must be at a controlled pace. No half wheeling, crossing of wheels or overtaking will be allowed. After 50 laps, the pace may increase within reason and there will be a natural attrition. When a rider can no longer maintain the pace, and is in danger of being lapped, he or she must pull to the right-hand side of the track (high) and may take a few warm down laps before safely exiting the track. The Commissaire or other officials may individuate that a rider must exit the track for safety reasons. They may not re-join the bunch once they have exited the track. Naturally each leader will set a different pace and this is where the intensity will increase and decrease, like a natural road or track race, and provide excellent training
benefits. At 75 laps, the pace may increase again (advised at the rider briefing and this will change as the fitness of riders increases). At 10 laps to go, there will only be a handful of faster riders left and this will escalate into a race. A bell will be rung with one lap to go. It is imperative that riders are mindful of holding their line, not making erratic moves, not unduly using brakes and not crossing over wheels. No water bottles or cameras will be allowed on bikes. Over time, the Club will introduce some fun aspects to the 100-Lapper, including Chasers, where a fast rider may go off the front and endeavour to catch the main bunch over a few laps, and Italian pursuits. There will be no cost for facility use or coaching/training until the end of the year. However, we will ask for a gold coin donation towards the cost of the BBQ.
Sport and Rec has generously offered its BBQ shelter and facilities to the club and we will hold a sausage sizzle each Wednesday night. We will be looking for parents to lend a hand with cooking sausages while the kids are training so they can be fed while the 100 lapper is taking place.
Please contact us for some great accommodation/whale watching deals... Don’t miss out on seeing these majestic creatures migrating.

Snowgoose Hotel
The Snow Goose Hotel was established in 1957, in the newly built town of Adaminaby. The original town of Adaminaby is now underneath the largest dam in the Snowy Hydro Electric Scheme, Lake Eucumbene. Several buildings were moved to the current location of Adaminaby, however the hotel was not one of them. Many residents were unhappy with the decision to flood the town, reluctant to leave their homes. The new position for Adaminaby was decided by a referendum voted on by the residents. Built by the Snowy Mountains Authority, the Snow Goose Hotel provided a watering hole for locals and accommodation for visitors. Along with the Big Trout, the Snow Goose is an iconic feature of the Adaminaby township. The white light post outside the Snow Goose is believed to be an original post from the hotel in Old Adaminaby, taken before Lake Eucumbene was created. The first lease to the Snow Goose was auctioned off and the family who owned Bolaro, a large sheep station, at the time are believed to have been the successful bidder. The story goes that the Snow Goose was named after a commercial aircraft, which delivered food and other supplies to Snowy Scheme workers in remote areas. There are other theories that it was given the name because Snow Geese are believed to move their nest from one place to another, just like the people of Old Adaminaby did. This however may be a wives tale. Current owner Andrew Smith says during the Snowy Scheme days, he has heard the hotel was a busy place, with up to seven people serving behind the bar. Andrew and his family hosted a Pub Ball in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Snow Goose last year.
They invited several representatives of four and five generation families of Adaminaby to cut the cake on the evening. Prior to Andrew taking ownership, Ryan and Jan Rankin owned the Snow Goose for eight years. Since arriving, Andrew has undertaken a few renovations to the back of the premises, upgrading technologies such as Wifi and kitchen appliances, and also purchasing new beddings and putting in new carpet. Playing an important part in the community, the Snow Goose sponsors many local events, such as the Adaminaby Races. If you want to experience a true country race day, Adaminaby Race Day is the one to go to. This year they will be held on Saturday November 24 with the theme ‘The good, the bad and the glamorous’. The crowds come from far and wide to attend the event for the action of the horse races, the fashions on the field, and the company of their friends and family. The Snow Goose has a great outlook of the famous Big Trout. An iconic feature of the town, the Big Trout was built in 1973. Weighing in at 2.5 tonnes, it is the world’s biggest trout. Andy Lomnici, a Hungarian born artist and sculptor, was living in Adaminaby and felt the town would benefit from a sculpture. The idea for the trout came from local real estate agent Leigh Stewart. The Snow Goose is a unique country pub, and a great place to chat to locals who are always happy to share their knowledge of the area. It is the perfect spot to camp if you are heading to Selwyn ski fields, want to do a spot of trout fishing, or if you just want to experience genuine country hospitality while you explore the beautiful area. As the locals say, ‘come and get loose at the Goose’.

Tour L’Etape Australia
Lateral Events, in conjunction with ASO (0wners of the Tour de France) and SBS, own and manage L’Etape Australia by le tour de France – the largest Tour de France event staged outside France and the most prestigious and challenging road cycling race in Australia. L’Etape by Tour de France is a unique road cycling event that provides an experience as close to riding in the Tour de France as it is possible for an amateur to get. In 2018, Australian National Champion (2012 and 2014), Amanda Spratt and cobbled classics specialist Mathew Hayman, will ride the event with thousands of other amateur riders. Staged in the Australian Snowy Mountains on the 1670km of fully closed roads and run under professional Tour de France conditions, the route includes two challenging King of the Mountains sections. With a distance of 170km and an elevation gain of 3000km, the course is described by Tour de France director Christian Prudhoome as ‘providing
a very similar experience for riders to a mountainous stage of the Tour de France, traversing through a multitude of stunning landscapes and topographies and a truly challenging final climb. There are two distances, both starting and finishing in Jindabyne; The Race of 170km and the Ride of 18km. The Ride includes the infamous first King of the Mountain section, Col de Beloka, but excludes the final push up Col de Kosciuszko to Perisher. The local communities have truly embraced the Tour de France coming to the Snowy Mountains. The entire route is decorated with cycling paraphernalia and some exquisite works of art. The towns and villages have adopted the colours of the Tour de France – yellow (Jindabyne), green (Berridale) and polka dot, (Dalgety).
Thousands of locals line the route with their cow bells, flags and encouragement; the welcome from the local community is extraordinary and creates a wonderful ambience throughout the day.
Tour de France commentator Matt Keenan will attend L’Etape Australia 2018 and will host a clinic and call the riders across the line at the Race and the Ride finish.
Berridale Spring Fair
The Berridale Lions Club Spring Fair has been running for more than 40 years. This makes it the longest running fair in the district. This year, the fair will be on Saturday September 29, and organisers have some information for stallholders. A new website has been created, and all stallholders, existing and new, are required to book for the fair through the website. Visit www.berridalelions.com for all the stallholder information needed. “We are very excited about the new website, said Berridale Lions Club Secretary Ian Schofield. “It will allow us to organise the fairs more professionally and efficiently. It will be easy for stallholders to navigate and book in to our great community fairs.
The Berridale Lions Club also hold an Easter Fair, which is very well attended by stallholders, community members and visitors. The two fairs are the main fundraising activities of the Berridale Lions Club, who then put the money back into the local community through various projects. The next aim is to fund a roof to shelter the barbecue facility at the Berridale Lions Park. The fairs always host a wide variety of stalls, from food to knick-knacks, plants and homemade jams, there is something for everyone. Live music and kids entertainment is also always on the menu, so make sure you mark the date in your calendar for a fun family day out on the long weekend.
