Elm Cottage Top 15 percent in the world Story by Alexis Shumack

S

urrounded by the stunning Snowy Mountains landscape is Elm Cottage in Tumut. In 2006, David Sheldon and his wife, Deb, decided to make the most of it and have dog friendly accommodation. They believe that dogs play an integral part in the family. The place has now been recognised as being in the top 15 percent of the most dog friendly accommodations in the world. David says his favourite part of owning Elm Cottage is seeing families and their dogs enjoying themselves in the beautiful landscapes. “Yeah, it’s one experience after another,” says David. “The Snowy Mountains really is a 365-day destination. I especially love seeing families and their dogs next to the river.” They say the final straw to open dog-friendly accommodation was when staying in Margaret River, WA and seeing the positive impacts of having a dog come along when holidaying. “Dogs are such an integral part of the family, they even influence the way that we connect with each other,” said David.

The Snowpost

David and Deb were the first in the region to have dog-friendly accommodation and are proud of it. They have seen couples, friends, families and retirees all benefit from their stay and 80 to 90 percent of these guests have brought dogs. “People are realising that dogs are just as important and want to bring them along, not put them in kennels.” Cats, birds and horses can also come with the family, making sure that holiday-makers can have the best experience they can, with the whole family. When they received an email telling them they were in the top 15 percent of dog friendly accommodations, they were pumped. Elm Cottage has helped to put the Snowy Mountains on the map, not only for its stunning natural beauty and countless opportunities for adventure, but also for its accessibility and inclusivity for all members of the family.

Jindabyne’s newest all-round nutrition centre

J

indabyne’s newest fitness and nutrition attraction, Peak Performance Nutrition and Fitness Camp, has caught the attention of devoted health and fitness individuals from across the region.

4 of weight management with the Australian institute of Fitness and explained that Peak is really about bringing the latest sports science, nutrition and training together to bring the holistic approach to training.

Tying in a nutritional food café with training sessions and the only inbody 270 body composition machine in town, it is a one stop shop for all your fitness and nutrition needs.

“We see so many people try to outtrain bad food and lifestyle choices and at the end of the day nutrition is around 80 percent of results,” Nic said.

Peak Performance marketing manager Nicholas Mclean says Peak Performance was developed after he came back from Titan Fitness camp in Thailand.

“We also want to make Jindabyne a travel fitness destination so from January 2020 we are starting Peak Performance Fitness Camps powered by Precision Training Centre (www. peakfitnesscamp.com.au).”

Nic lost 8kg as a good start there and then was training with Dan Hutley at precision training centre who he does a lot of Personal Training work with and lost a further 20kg of body fat.

The trio want to showcase Jindabyne as a great place to stay and train and transform your life through great training, nutrition and mental strength coaching.

“There is really great training in this town, I also do regular PT sessions with Manuela and Michael at High Country Fitness, but there was not an all-round nutrition centre where you can book training, eat super nutritious food or get scanned by the latest technology like our inbody 270 body composition machine which I used regularly at Titan Fitness”, Nic said.

They also have plans to look at Merimbula so there will be a beach camp base as well.

“Dan and I approached Renae who is the local CrossFit trainer, a great trainer for the pump, and it made sense for the three of us to come together as we all bring a different skillset.” Nic is currently studying a certificate

The first group to arrive will be Olympic weightlifters training for the next Australia Opens and while they train hard and eat healthy they will also get the opportunity to enjoy the scenery. “We also offer a corporate camp packages where businesses can come and experience the Snowy Mountains through team bonding exercises, training and nutrition”, Dan said. While waiting for the 2020 fitness camps to begin, start your health and fitness journey today by trying out the inbody 270 body composition machine. This device allows you to regularly monitor your level of body fat, lean muscle mass and muscular

development so you can understand how your diet, lifestyle and training regime are influencing your overall body composition. The inbody machine is the perfect starting point to begin your fitness goals and while you’re there ask Renae, Dan or Nic about healthy eating choices as they have calorie controlled meals ready for purchase and lots of great advice. Located in the Town Centre, Jindabyne come down and say hello today. For any enquiries or updates check out their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ peakperformancenutritionfitness/

Bookings have begun and Peak has already received bookings for the first camp in January, Dan explained that the camps come as a booking package where airport shuttle, accommodation and nutritional meals are supplied for the duration of their camp. “Our goal is to get people to come with some sort of nutritional plan in place whether it be for weight loss or to bulk up. Whatever their fitness goal is we can then help to achieve that through our training sessions and nutrition”, Dan said.

Lake Jindabyne Sailing Club

T

he Lake Jindabyne Sailing Club has a long and vibrant history within the Snowy Monaro region, finding its roots in the early days of the Snowy Scheme. In 1957, workers from the Tumut Pond Dam and Tumut 1 Power Station formed the Cabramurra Yacht Club and raced across Three-Mile Dam. A year later, the club would relocate to Lake Eucumbene before eventually settling at its current location on the shores of Lake Jindabyne in 1968 and becoming known from then on as the Lake Jindabyne Sailing Club. To this day, it remains the only sailing club in the Snowy Monaro region.

Located on the shores of Lake Jindabyne off Kosciuszko Rd, the club’s program extends from November through to March and they sail regularly each Saturday afternoon as well as each Wednesday evening for their Twilight Sail, which is accompanied by a barbecue dinner. The club’s members mainly sail Lasers and Hobie Cats, although a few other yacht types do compete. The Lake Jindabyne Sailing Club caters to sailors of all skill levels. The twilight racing uses a handicap system that ensures that everyone has a chance to go home a winner.

Making the most of summer in the Snowy Mountains, the club packs their calendar full of events and this season is no exception. As well as the regular races, club members compete in a number of sailing disciplines from Regattas to remote control sailing boats and the club offers regular lessons and sailing courses. While there will not be a club regatta held in the 2019 to 2020 season, the club will be hosting the NSW/ACT Laser Masters regatta, which will be held on Lake Jindabyne from February 7 to February 9, 2020.

Becoming a member of the Lake Jindabyne Sailing Club also provides you with membership to Australian Sailing and covers you with their Personal Liability Insurance Policy whilst conducting sailing activities. To become a member of the Lake Jindabyne Sailing Club, simply come along to the club on a Wednesday or Saturday afternoon and fill out a membership form. Alternatively, you can download the membership application form from their website and email it to membership@ lakejindabynesailingclub.com To find out more, visit lakejindabynesailingclub.com

Experience the magic of Thredbo’s alpine area by foot with one of our experienced guides.

T

here is a variety of guided walks available. Guests can choose from the moderately paced family oriented hikes, like the Kosciuszko Summit Hike, to hikes that take you through the high, windswept regions among the tallest peaks in the country; such as the Townsend Hike. There is no better way to get to know our high country, with its beautiful wild flowers, unique landscapes and stunning, rugged peaks than to get amongst them with a knowledgeable guide leading the way.

Guided hikes recommence 16 November 2019 and run until 3 May 2020. Outside of the season, check the Trail Status for self guided hikes.

Spending lots of time in the outdoors, our hikes team have extensive knowledge of the high country and it’s surroundings.

Rachael Schultz G’Day, my name is Rachael. As a kid, I grew up northwest of Sydney in a family that has a taste for adventure and a love of the outdoors. From childhood stemmed my passion, setting off on exchanges internationally to learn about diversity in environments globally. I have volunteered in foreign countries to educate communities, help build sustainable and clean living quarters for the less fortunate. I have also lead outdoor hiking, rapid crossing, canoeing, adventure program for a children’s camp in Canada. Heading into the Alpine of Australia is such a unique experience. Over the past years I’ve been here I can tell you that no two hikes are ever the same. I love being able to share my backyard with guests hoping they’ll leave with strong knowledge to share with others, and a newfound passion for the beautiful place it is. See you out there!

Angie’s Italian Kitchen

A

ngie’s Italian Kitchen has been serving traditional Italian cuisine to Jindabyne for 38 years.

Angie and Sam Ponticello have the golden touch when it comes to traditional, authentic Italian cuisine, only serving the freshest ingredients and five-star quality dishes. The couple began their adventure in Jindabyne serving Italian cuisine out of a food van in 1982 located at the BP Service Station, the first Italian cuisine to the Snowy Mountains. Locals would gather around the van to watch as Angie and Sam cooked delicious food to order. Soon word got around town and people were lining up to see what the fuss was all about. It didn’t take long for Angie’s Hot Food Bar to be known for the best lasagne in town, where trays and trays of freshly cooked piping hot lasagne was the number one item on the menu. Open 24 hours on Fridays serving everything you could want, from Italian dishes to traditional fast food items such as hotdogs and burgers. It was the only 24 hour take away place in town. In 1988, after six years of owning and operating Angie’s Hot Food Bar, the BP service station was sold and Angie and Sam had to find another place to set up shop. Space was hard to find in Jindabyne in the 80s as infrastructure was not like it is today, and it took Angie and Sam some time to find the right location to start again. In March of 1989 a café called ‘Lake Café’ became available in Nuggets Crossing and Angie and Sam jumped at the opportunity to turn it into their own, later naming it ‘Angie’s Italian Kitchen’. The patrons from the food van followed the food and Angie’s Italian Kitchen quickly became the most popular, busiest restaurant in town. Seating up to 55 people, with up to 173 people turning up on a Saturday night. Staying in Nuggets Crossing until 1993 Angie and Sam decided it was time for a break and took up space in Clyde Street only for the winter season. They named the restaurant ‘Angie’s Back’, which is now known as the Jindy Inn. In 1996, the couple moved their restaurant into Snowy Mountains Plaza, downsizing to a small 43 seater restaurant which Angie refers to as ‘Little Angie’s’. Three years later, a front shop in prime location became vacant in the Town Centre and Angie and Sam knew it was

the perfect location to call forever home for their restaraunt. Shop 1A/31 Kosciuszko Road in the Town Centre of Jindabyne offers the best views of Lake Jindabyne and an open floor space seating up to 100 people a night and Angie’s is still there today. With the new location and breathtaking views Angie and Sam hired and sponsored a very talented chef, Sion Harwood, from Wales who came to work in the restaurant alongside Sam in the kitchen as head chef. In 2000, the restaurant won their first Restaurant and Catering Award for Excellence in the area and continued to enter the category winning a total of six awards, the last being in 2009. Saturday nights became the busiest night for the restaurant and Angie wanted her restaurant to be different and stand out from all the rest. “I came up with the idea of printing out song lyrics from popular artists being Dean Martin featuring the fitting songs ‘That’s Amore’ and ‘Volara’ and Frank Sinatra songs ‘New York, New York’ and ‘My Way’. Soon after the restaurant became known for its sing-a-longs,” explains Angie. After 8pm the lyrics were handed out to the tables and the patrons enjoyed this unique dining experience. Although it’s not a regular thing anymore on occasion a local does request and Angie can’t help herself but dust the lyric pages off for one more song. Sam has a strong background in Italian cooking as his father owned a restaurant and wine bar called Cantina in Sicily and his continued passion for cooking lasted through the years. Becoming popular for the signature dishes including homemade ravioli, gnocchi and all things pizza and pasta and not to forget the mouth-watering veal that is tender and melts in the mouth, Angie and Sam source the freshest ingredients for their dishes locally. Open through until October, come down to Angie’s Italian Kitchen and taste the delicious meals that keep the locals and seasonals coming back for more before Angie takes her break. After 38 years within the hotel industry Angie and Sam are proud of their achievements and excited to see what the future brings. Open Tuesday-Sunday from 5pm9pm and from 12pm-3pm for lunch and 5pm-9pm for dinner on Friday to Sundays, to keep up to date visit their Facebook page www.facebook.com/ angiesitalianjindabyne.

Snowy Valleys Cycle Challenge Adelong - Batlow - Tumbarumba

T

he second “Snowy Valleys Cycle Challenge” will be held on Sunday 22 March 2020, organised by Tumut Rotary Club, with support from Batlow and Tumbarumba Rotary Clubs. Three distances are on offer 26km, 72km and 144km. The motto for the challenge is “Life’s a climb but the view is great”. The 26km option is not flat, but an undulating course, for those that want a short ride. The 72km option has some long climbs and sweeping descents - 1370m of climbing. The 144km course is for the fit riders who like challenges - 2600m climbing. Riders will travel through the hills and towns in the western foothills of the Snowy Mountains. The Challenge starts at Adelong, an 1850s gold mining town with its heritage gold processing area at Adelong Falls. About 1.5kms from

14

The Snowpost

Adelong is the state listed heritage industrial site Adelong Falls Gold Mill Ruins with remarkable stone ruins of the ingenious Reefer ore crushing machine, is a must see. SVCC will leave Adelong, heading south, climbing a short steep hill to warm up the legs, travelling along the Adelong creek valley, to Wondalga, the turnaround point for 26km short course. From Wondalga the longer distances of 72 and 144km the climb to Batlow begins, a long gradual climb along a ridge to the home of Batlow. Views to the east show the mountains of Talbingo, Numbernang and others within Kosciuszko National Park. Sweeping views to the west show areas covered with hail netting, in the background are hills covered with pine forest. You will pass orchards laden with Pink Lady apples yet to be picked.

Arriving in Batlow, the first checkpoint/ food stop, a small mountain town for famous apples, Batlow’s gold rush began in 1854 when prospectors converged on Reedy Creek, now Batlow, in 1854. With claims that gold was being carried out by the bucketful. Apples planted thrived, the beginning of the apple industry for the mountain town of Batlow had begun. After a short stop in Batlow, riders head uphill, take a look to the left at the sweeping views, showing the picturesque valley Batlow is nestled in, tree lined roads, orchards, then a fast decent to Bago checkpoint. Riders of the 72km reach their half way point and turn off here, passing through pine forest and descending back to Wondalga and Adelong. 144km riders turn left toward Tumbarumba, steady climbs and sweeping descents through pine forest ,the views are simply stunning.

Tarradale valley awaits, grazing, vineyards and views of Kosciuszko main range await. Tumbarumba is major food/stop point for riders Tumbarumba is nestled in a valley. A pretty mountain town close to Kosciuszko National Park and the descent to the Murray river valley. In the winter snow covered peaks can be seen in the distance. Riders after refuelling retrace to Bago checkpoint. All the climbing is rewarded with a long sweeping descent to Wondalga. Local riders say the descent justifies the climb. Returning to Adelong Showground finds a festival underway with music, local craft beers, local Batlow ciders, food and stalls. Showers are available on site so stay and enjoy the atmosphere. Celebrating Australia with sun, shearing and snags

The NSW Strong Wool Shearing Competition will once again be the backbone of the Australia Day Celebrations in Bombala.

W

e’re all geared up for Christmas, but don’t forget that Australia Day is also on the horizon, and our region boasts one of the longest running celebrations in the country. Bombala has been getting into the spirit of Australia Day with a big celebration for over 60 years now, and 2020 will deliver a wonderful mix of traditional favourites and new attractions. A full day of fun is planned for January 25 in Bombala, kicking off with a Mini Triathlon in the morning and rolling into a full day of shearing in the NSW Strong Wool Shearing Competition. This shearing event is really the backbone of the celebration, and this year even more interest is being

created with a Calcutta being run on the hotly contested Open event. And if the shearing action isn’t enough for you, spectators will be entertained with fashion parades run between events, an exciting new addition to the day’s line up. Among other new attractions will be a Geo Caching Competition designed by students of the Bombala High School, with $100 for the participant with the fastest time, and another $100 for the person who finds the Golden Tag. The new ‘Mini Tough Mudda’ is also set to prove popular, with kids of all ages eagerly getting stuck into an obstacle course brimming with mud, coloured sprays and water. Harking back to the days of Bombala’s

There are more kids activities planned this year, including the exciting ‘Mini Tough Mudda’ obstacle course. traditional Wool and Wood Festival, the Australia Day Committee is also very pleased to be hosting a chainsaw exhibition and races, with the wood used being auctioned off at the end of the day.

While all this is unfolding a ‘Funkhana’ will be taking place on the showground for those kids who want to spend their Australia Day riding their horses, with the Pony Club once again organising some great fun events.

And what would Australia Day be without snags? Once again the Sausage Cook-Off will take place, with the crowd happily voting for its favourite professional and locally made sausages after considerable taste testing has been undertaken.

And being a family day there is always room for more kid’s activities, with Zorb Balls and the inflatable dartboard returning, along with a jumping castle, colouring in and other craft activities.

There are other competitions too, including the ‘Essence of Rural Australia’ themed photography competition, as well as a new photo comp that kicks off this year for kids in the shearing singlets always proudly worn on Australia Day.

Throw in some great raffle prizes, a fishing competition in the lead up and of course a whole host of refreshments, and Australia Day in Bombala is shaping up to be an absolute cracker! Make sure you set aside Saturday, January 25 for some Aussie fun at the Bombala Exhibition Ground.

Monaro’s spectacular grasslands An untapped tourism potential? By Rainer Rehwinkel, Friends of Grasslands

T

he community group Friends of Grasslands held a Monaro Golden Daisy field trip on the weekend of 17 and 18 November. The main purpose of this was to assess the health of all known populations of the vulnerable Monaro Golden Daisy, Rutidosis leiolepis on the Monaro Plains. The process involved visiting the sites of all known populations, mapping them, and making an estimate of each population’s size. The group spent a couple of glorious days in the Monaro grasslands. I led the trip on Sunday, and some of the grasslands I saw were truly spectacular; as good as I’ve seen in my 28 years of studying the grasslands of the Monaro. Those who were present on the Saturday reported similar observations at some of their surveyed sites.

The Saturday team surveyed a small patch at Old Cooma Common, and then sites along Dry Plains Rd and Bushrangers Hill Rd near Adaminaby. They undertook a side trip to Top Hut Travelling Stock Reserve to assess the quality of the grassland at that spectacular site, although the Monaro Golden Daisy has never been recorded there. On Sunday, we started at a previously recorded site at Bibbenluke Common. While this site looked truly spectacular, with wildflowers of many species in glorious full-flower, unfortunately no Monaro Golden Daisy plants could be found. I discovered this population in the late 1990s, and then it was quite a healthy one, with more than 20 plants present, along with a large population of Native Flax, Linum marginale. While the beautiful blue-flowered Native Flax

is still present, its numbers are severely reduced, with only three plants seen. The lack of Monaro Golden Daisy and the very much reduced population of Native Flax at Bibbenluke Common shows just how vulnerable the biodiversity of our natural temperate grasslands is. As far as I can ascertain, Bibbenluke Common has been used exclusively for cattle grazing for 150 years or even more. However, within the last 15 years or so, an entire population of a threatened species has apparently disappeared. The likely causes: a combination of tooheavy grazing, grazing at the wrong time, and a series of severe droughts. The Native Flax population has been subjected to the same pressures and has fared only slightly better. The still spectacular nature of the grassland remnant at Bibbenluke

Common serves to highlight the incredible diversity that we have lost elsewhere throughout the region. This is why natural temperate grassland is listed as a critically endangered ecological community. Bibbenluke Common and a handful of other sites like it across the Monaro point to an untapped tourism potential. Friends of Grasslands see a future when tourists will not just go to Kosciuszko National Park for wildflower walks in the middle of summer; they will also make time throughout the spring seasons in order to ramble in the special wildflower gardens that are the Monaro region’s rare remnant grasslands. For more information about Friends of Grasslands, see http://www.fog.org. au/

Lake Light Sculpture to captivate and entertain visitors again over the Easter long weekend of 2020

Planning is underway for next year’s Lake Light Sculpture which will be held at Banjo Paterson Park over the Easter long weekend 10 to 13 April 2020. The 18th Lake Light Sculpture is an outdoor and indoor sculpture exhibition open to professional artists, novice artists, students and tradies who are keen to create and exhibit a sculpture that is controversial and thoughtprovoking or fun and whimsical. At the 2019 event, more than 80 sculptures lined the pathway around the Lake Jindabyne foreshore and entertained 1000s of visitors both during the day and at night when the sculptures are beautifully illuminated. The committee is calling for entries

from artists and sculptors and the deadline for entries is 6 March 2020.

the Smalls Exhibition which will be held at Rydges Snowy Mountains.

The entry form will be available through the website which has undergone a recent facelift.

“These sculptures may be small in stature but will leave a big impression,” says artistic director and local art teacher Ben Eyles.

Last year’s prize pool was in excess of $26,000 and the organisers are hoping for another successful event in 2020. “Entries are always varied and material choices are widespread,” said chairperson Lisa Matthes.

“This will appeal to artists who work in glass, delicate or fragile materials that can’t bear the wear and tear of an outdoor sculpture exhibition.”

prior to Easter. Any sponsorship, volunteer, artist and general enquiries can be emailed to Email: info@lakelightsculpture.com.au For further media information: Lisa Matthes – Chairperson 0409 553 651, isamatthes@midp.com.au

“Many artists use recycled materials while others use more mainstream materials such as steel, wood and stone.”

“Sculptures that can sit comfortably on a plinth will loosely meet the criteria and this will allow many of our traditional and long-term exhibiting artists to enter another category,” said Mr Eyles.

Visit the chapel All-in-one Snowy Mountains wedding venue

L

ooking for an affordable wedding venue? Snowy Mountains Traveller’s Rest has recently refurbished their chapel, a fully operational functions room, honeymoon suite and beautiful gardens. With the convenience of having everything in the one location, only minutes from Cooma, the largest town in the region, it is the perfect spot for a country wedding. The functions room is a blank canvas ready to decorate in any style and the gardens are beautifully manicured and provide many spots for romantic photo opportunities. The small chapel is a unique location for an intimate wedding. Decorations are taken care of, with the ceiling lined with hanging paper daisies that grow on the property. The honeymoon suite is known as the Rosina suite,

named after an infamous marriage in 1870. A young couple, Rosina and William, were riding down the mountain from Kiandra to Cooma. It was to be their wedding day, and they were hoping to find the Catholic priest at home. Along the way, the bride collected wildflowers for her bouquet. They arrived to find the priest in his carriage about to leave. He told them he could not marry them until he returned in several months’ time. The couple threatened to go to the Church of England instead, and the priest hastily changed his mind. They were married on horseback by the side of the road, with the priest conducting the service from his carriage. On their return to Kiandra, Rosina and William stayed at The Traveller’s Rest for their honeymoon. It became a special place for them, and William purchased it a few years later.

The Traveller’s Rest is also home to Collections Reflections. A gift shop featuring old and new items, you can also enjoy a coffee and cake while you browse. A new addition for summer is the picnic option. Travellers and their dogs are welcome to come and grab a picnic basket to take out into the garden and stretch out in the sun. What a perfect way to break up the journey to and from the mountains. You can pick up a unique gift for yourself or a loved one at the same time, with delicious Australian made condiments and sweets, antique furniture, picture frames, cushions, porcelain and other beautiful homewares. Snowy Mountains Traveller’s Rest is open Monday to Friday, 10am to 4.30pm on the Snowy Mountains Highway just south of Cooma. Call in on your way past to check it out.

programs for young people, such as their ‘keeping kids in sport’, ‘early education’ and ‘arts and academia’ foundations.

“We had a bathtub on wheels, complete with a shower curtain, bubbles and shower caps over helmets,” says founder and organiser Tony Nassar.

There are six categories for the derby including 5-8 years, 9-14 years, 15-18 years, 18+ years, novelty and business/group.

“There was also carts that looked like aeroplanes and one like a fire engine, and others with personal decorations like great big flames painted up the sides. It’s great to see such creativity at the event, and I’m hoping to see even more for our 2020 derby.”

Each cart can have up to three runs. The carts must have no more than six wheels and no less than three. The maximum measurements of the cart are 1200mm high, 2400mm long and 1200mm wide. They must have working brakes, with no sharp of dangerous objects.

The Monaro Billy Kart Derby will be held on Sunday March 1. During school term, Tony is hoping to get some schools on board to create and enter their own billy carts.

Entry forms will be available on the Monaro Billy Kart Derby Facebook page and the Cooma Car Club website coomacarclub.com.au. Entry to race is $20.

It’s a great event to come and watch. Entry is a gold coin donation, and all proceeds go to local charity The Community Chest.

Scrutineering will begin at 9am on the day, and the gates will open to spectators at 10.30am for the races to start at 11am.

The Community Chest assists local people financially when they come on hard times either for health reasons, homelessness or domestic violence. They also run

There will also be trophies up for grabs for the winners. Previous events have seen speeds over 40km per hour, so be prepared for a thrilling race.

Rodeo roundup Watch real life cowboys in Jindabyne and Cooma

T

he Jindabyne Man from Snowy River Rodeo is one of the biggest events for the town. Riders come from far and wide to compete in the exciting competition. It is still the only continuous event linking the old town to the new town, a big achievement considering all that has happened over the past 70-plus years.

The big attraction for spectators is its high action. Jindabyne Rodeo is the first of three rodeos in five days with Nowra and Moruya to follow.

This year rodeo will be held on Saturday December 28, starting at 11am at the John Connors Oval, Jindabyne. It will offer all the high action events with the open bull ride, saddle bronc, open bare back, poley buckjump, junior and senior barrel racing events plus the ladies only steer ride which was a lot of fun last year. All these events will ensure an actionpacked afternoon.

The day will begin at 11am with some junior events with barrel races and steer rides.

The rodeo is fast becoming one of the bigger events on the Southern Zone calendar with over 200 competitors taking part in last year’s event.

Entry is $20 for adults, $10 for kids and $50 for a family (two adults, two kids).

The rodeo committee would like to thank all the sponsors who continually support the event, if we didn’t have the sponsors we would not have a rodeo.

The action-packed afternoon will see the bulls and buckjump events. There will be a full bar and barbecue facilities on-site as well as side show alley and several clothing stalls will make the 76th rodeo a great family day.

Cooma The 2020 AgriWest Cooma Rodeo is another one to go along to on Saturday February 8. Starting at 10am at the Cooma Showgrounds, there is a full program of bull and bronc riding as well as steer undecorating, barrel races, team roping, steer wrestling and the poley buckjump. 2020 will also see events for locals in barrels and steer undecorating. Both the Cooma and Jindabyne Rodeos are ABCRA affiliated. Camping is available at the Cooma Showgrounds and a full bar will operate. For more information, check out each event’s Facebook page.

Snowy Mountains fishing Late start to the season

T

he Snowy Mountains fishing season has had a tumultuous start with adverse weather conditions causing a late start to the season. However, as the weather starts to warm up, life is starting to flourish around the local fisheries and the trout season is coming into full swing. According to Michael Patton of the Alpine Angler in Cooma, the warmer weather means more insects, bringing the trout out to feed. “We’re starting to see a lot of grasshoppers and other insects hatching which is good,” Michael said. “In the afternoons when the wind stops the fish are really coming out and with the lake (Eucumbene) at 30 per cent, things are really looking good.” According to the guys at Alpine Angler, Buckenderra is currently seeing a lot of action with fish rising and insects hatching everywhere. Fishers are using size 16 and 14 Nymphs with good results and larger Black Bead-head Nymphs into the night. Anglers Reach is seeing similarly positive conditions and Braemar Bay always worth a look in as well. Jindabyne is looking reasonable so far with some good afternoon rises and quality browns being caught mostly around the western side of

the lake. Larger flies such as Wooly Buggers and Jindy Specials are seeing the best results on lake Jindabyne. Like Eucumbene, things are starting to pick up at Tantangara, despite the lake being low. It’s well worth taking the time to head up, with Nymphs, Bead-head Nymphs and Wooly Buggers all seeing good results in the afternoons. The trolling scene is also starting to pick up with good reports coming from all the lakes and one Cooma local even bagging 16 browns by trolling slow on lead line and flat line and using Tassie Devil Lures. Tassie Devils are having good results across the board, as are bullet lures and Strike Pro Blades/Minnows. Reports are coming back of good fishing at Rushes Bay, Seven Gates, Buckenderra, Braemar Bay and Old Adaminaby. In Jindabyne, good reports are coming back from Hatchery Bay, Poo Bay and Kalkite. Things are also picking up at Tantangara. For bait fishing, worms and power bait are having good effect The Murray Cod season officially opened on December 1 with anglers flocking from around the world trying to land the iconic and increasingly popular big game species. Unfortunately, the season

began on a sour note, with reports of a fish kill in the Blowering Reservoir in which at least 30 Murray Cod were found dead. NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Fisheries are still investigating the cause of the deaths at the time of this article, but it is believed to have potentially happened naturally as a result of a severe temperature swing, causing low oxygen levels in the reservoir. Otherwise, the Snowy Mountains angling scene is in full swing and there is no better time to break out the rod and hit the waters. As of November 28, the lake levels are as follows: Eucumbene - 30 per cent and steady Jindabyne - 82 per cent and steady Tantangara - 19 per cent and falling To find out more, visit any of the regions angling shops and chat to their friendly staff.
