Inaugural Snowy Classic CYCLING GRAN FONDO
Bicycling Australia, the nation’s leading cycling media and events platform, is thrilled to add a major new event to their national cycling series – The Classics. The Snowy Classic will be the organisation’s fifth Gran Fondo after the Bowral, Noosa, Mudgee and Clare Classics, and is expected to quickly position itself as 'Queen of the Classics.' The event will inspire an influx of cyclists to Jindabyne and the nation's iconic Snowy Mountains region, who will contribute significantly to the year-round economy and bolster the tourism-dependent region. Registrations are now open for the debut on 26 March 2022. The Snowy Classic will offer riders the opportunity to tackle true alpine climbs and European-style cycling right here in Australia. With two options - 170km or 110km courses - on fully closed roads, and with participant safety the number one priority, it will be the cycling experience of the year.
NSW Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said the NSW Government was proud to support the Snowy Classic from 2022 until 2026, with the event expected to inject $4.16 million into the State’s economy across the five-year period. “We know the regional visitor economy is critically important to the wellbeing of NSW, which is why the NSW Government is supporting the Snowy Classic over five years to build a strong following and make it an annual must-attend event for cyclists and their families and friends,” Mr Ayres said. “This will help the local visitor economy to grow and push us toward our target in the NSW Visitor Economy Strategy 2030 for regional overnight visitor expenditure to reach $25 billion. “Visitors will be blown away by the stunning scenery and excellent tourism and hospitality offerings of the region – register now and start planning your itinerary through VisitNSW.com.” Founder of the Snowy Classic and Classic Series events, James Yaffa, added “We are excited to see the popular Gran Fondo format expand and being part of this region was a long held ambition for our series of events.
and offers so much for road cyclists. We are super excited to officially be launching the inaugural Snowy Classic.” With regional areas experiencing challenging times over several years now, Mr Yaffa said the core objective was to deliver a fun and safe event while helping the Snowy region deliver much-needed tourism and ongoing brand marketing. The Snowy Classic is supported by the NSW Government through Destination NSW. Early Bird registrations for the inaugural Snowy Classic are now open, head to www.snowyclassic. com.au to register. ABOUT BICYCLING AUSTRALIA Bicycling Australia is the nation’s most established and highly respected cycling media platform, in print and online for over 25 years and 231 issues. For summer ‘21 / ‘22 we’ve taken the ‘snow’ out of the Snowy Mountains! In a bid to position Australia’s favourite winter holiday spot as a year-round holiday destination for families,Tourism Snowy Mountains has joined forces with Eugene Tan from Aquabumps and his family… Eugene Tan and his Family Explore the ‘Summer’ Mountains The result is an action packed snapshot of our region, showcasing just some of the awesome experiences and activities that the SnowySummer Mountains can offer families, including hiking in the
high country, enjoying the local food and beverage options, mountain biking in Thredbo and learning more about the region’s history and heritage.
Tan will release his five photos across his Aquabumps Facebook and Instagram accounts to over 260,000 followers tomorrow, Friday 26 November, so make sure you stay tuned!
Best known for his early morning shots of iconic Bondi Beach in action, Aquabumps started as a surf check email to Eugene’s friends. It has since grown to a database of 40,000 daily, a seriously impressive social media following and a gallery right on his beloved Bondi Beach. Tourism Snowy Mountains challenged the renowned Aussie photographer to do what he does best and capture five photos whilst on his Summer Mountains adventure.
“Our partnership with Eugene was the perfect fit. The Tans are a family who thrive on being outdoors and enjoying action-packed adventures, so it was amazing to introduce them to the area and to document how much fun they had in the mountains. We can’t wait to share their adventures with the Aquabumps audience.”.
As part of the summer campaign, Tourism Snowy Mountains along with NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, Kosciuszko Brewing, Thredbo Resort and Snowy Hydro are offering one lucky family the chance to have their very own Summer Mountains experience. ELLIOTT WAY REOPENS
The Elliott Way was closed for more than a year due to bushfire and flood damage.
Elliott Way reopened from on Friday November 5, following completion of significant safety repairs following fire and storm damage, as well as subsequent landslips.
“NPWS anticipates that this reopening at the start of the busy summer period will help provide a much-needed boost to the local tourism industry,” said Mr Petrov.
Ryan Petrov, Manager Southern Ranges Services for the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), thanked the community for their patience while the most complex parts of the road repairs were completed.
“Shortly after the 2019-20 summer bushfires, heavy rainfall inundated the bare landscape, leading to damage to the roadway. The rainfall blocked culverts with sediment which caused stormwater runoff to overtop the
12
THE SNOWPOST
embankments, creating erosion and undermining the road surface which resulted in four significant slip sites,” he said. “The extensive damage was of a scale not previously experienced through this area, and required removal of tens of thousands of tonnes of debris. Unexpected ground conditions caused delays that in some cases required design changes and revision of work
methods and resourcing.” “Despite severe weather which caused further delays in recent months, NPWS has completed the critical structural works, reinstatement of the road base, and embankment stabilisation which required 20,000 tonnes of rock.” “Completion of ongoing superficial works and resealing of the road surface over the summer may require some brief, planned closures but these will
be communicated well in advance and timed to minimise disruption.” “With these works nearing completion the road can now reopen to reinstate the important link from Tumbarumba to the east of the Great Dividing Range. The full road opening follows on from the recent partial opening that allowed access to the popular O’Hare’s campground in early October.” “Despite this good news, it is important to recognise that the impacts from the fires can still be felt along the road corridor. The steep surrounding landscape remains severely impacted
from the loss of vegetation. Recent heavy rainfall events have triggered further landslips and work will be ongoing to manage these.” “The nature of the Elliott Way road corridor has significantly changed since the fires and it is important that the community is aware that further road closures may be caused by slips or rockfalls at short notice.” “NPWS will continue to monitor road conditions and undertake all efforts to minimise disruptions during the completion of the current works as well as any future works.”

Part 2: South A series of articles posted on the ‘History of the Monaro’ Facebook page by Bombala’s Wendy Rutherford have been attracting interest, particularly a three part piece on the early years of the settlement. Following the first part of the series in the November Snow Post, here we print Part 2, with the final instalment to be included in the next issue.
Evening News, January 1872 A TOUR TO THE SOUTH (By our special correspondent) MONARO-BOMBALA
PART 2 Leaving Bombala, I started for the southern border of the colony, and the Delegate Gold-fields, about twentyfour miles distant. The first house that attracts the attention of the traveller, about a mile from the town, is the fine
14
THE SNOWPOST
stone parsonage, the residence of the Rev. S. Percival. Just beyond the parsonage there is a well-kept farm and orchard, the property of Mr. Ingram; and on the opposite side of the road from the farm, is Mr. G. H. Grace’s public house. Two miles further on over a plain, is Saucy Creek, whence the road continues over the same
well grassed plain for another three miles, and we arrived at Aston Creek or Lewis’s station, Mr. Donald Mackay’s residence, it is a sheep station, partly watered by smaller creeks, and partly by the Delegate River. Six miles beyond, over plains and lightly timbered country, we arrived at the Nicholson River, (miscalled the Little
Plains River, being about the twentieth of that name in the colony. (Vide Rev. W. B. Clarke’s comments). Glen View, Little Plains station is the residence and property of John R. Nicholson, Esq., J.P., the chairman of the local bench. The residence is a fine spacious building, erected on a commanding position, overlooking
of New South Wales; it is about twenty miles long and seven miles wide, and carries now about 10,000 sheep and 1000 head of cattle. It is a well-watered country, but it has been sadly cut up by prospecting parties, &c.
miles of country, and the broad streams at the base of the hill. Before the house there is a lawn and fine shrubbery four or five acres in extent. I should mention that water is pumped from the river to the house by an ingeniouslycontrived water-lift which is above the orchard. Within view of the house and across the river, there is a monument
of the liberality of Mr. Nicholson - a private schoolhouse - for the families of the shepherds and others. It is the first private schoolhouse erected on Monaro, and is a really comfortable little building having a nice flower-garden around it. The school is under the charge of Mrs. Greenwood. The Little Plains station extends to the borders
Leaving Little Plains I followed the left-hand track for about six miles over undulating country, and arrived at Craigie, which is in reality part of what is known as the Delegate Gold-fields. I here state that on the whole of these gold-fields there are over 400 Chinese employed, and about thirty Europeans. These fields have been opened about eighteen years. The principal centre of population is Craigie, where the township is essentially a Chinese one. I found it somewhat difficult to get reliable information of these alluvial diggings; but Mr. Leo Hawk, an intelligent Chinese storekeeper, who has been twenty years in district and fourteen on the diggings, says that countrymen are all making fair wages. Craigie has one public house, two Joss houses, one English, and three or four Chinese storekeepers, two Chinese shoe makers, and two Chinese blacksmiths and carpenters. A good substantial bush country inn containing eight rooms was re opened under new management, on the night of my arrival, by Mr. James Roberts. The sign is the ‘Golden Age,’ and the re-opening was celebrated by a housewarming. At the ball many Chinese, some with their European wives, took part. The proceedings, as is generally the case in such places, were rather rowdy. Even if I could get a bed, which I could not on that occasion, sleep was out of the question. So, with my
friend the storekeeper, I amused myself looking at life, in its liveliest aspect, till about 2 o’clock in the morning, when, in company with Mr. Witton, I strolled through this Chinese township, which consists of irregular streets of houses principally thatched, and each having the high sapling fence at the back usual to gold-digging settlements. The Chinese quarters here were once burnt down, and once flooded out, but the Celestials have rebuilt each time almost on the ruins. At that early hour of the morning we found most of the Chinamen up, and we were admitted at each hut without murmur. They were well acquainted with my friend, and were very inquisitive about my name and the object of my visit. Most of the Chinese were reclining on beds or wide tables. Gambling and smoking opium was going on at one end of this platform, while the wife of the occupier of the hut, and in one case the children also, were rolled in a blanket at the other. Opium smoking is the Chinaman’s panacea for all ills and troubles, and it is said that his mind is soothed and his spirits raised by its influence. Like drink, it ultimately sends the slave to the grave. The Joss houses, or Chinese places of worship, are airy and slight structures, rather fanciful in design; the interior embellished with lanterns and cut paper of all colours. It is difficult to explain their religious notions. Those whom I spoke to denied that they worshipped idols, and maintained that they worshipped a ‘Great Unseen Being’ and offered sacrifices to him. They have great feasts and rejoicings at certain periods of the year. Continued page 16

Part 2: South Continued from page 15 There is no reason to believe that the Chinese as a class are exceptionally immoral or dishonest; some I know have been safely trusted to a large amount. On this diggings Mr. Loo Hawk, Chinese storekeeper, does very well. A gentleman on whom I can rely said to me ‘They have a system of giving credit and collecting accounts which prevents fraud, and with all my experience on these diggings I have never met a Chinaman that could not read or write, and that is more than I can say of our own ‘countrymen.’ About fifty yards from the public house is the good bush store of Mr. R. Witton, containing all the necessaries of digger life, with a good quantity of the principal item of Chinese food, rice. About 3 o’clock in the morning I accompanied Mr. Witton to the store, and a ‘shake-down’ of blankets was made on the counter, where I slept soundly till the sun had risen high in the Heavens that morning. After having breakfasted at the publichouse, I rode up the creek for about a mile to the station of Charles Lawson, Esq., who has resided here for thirty-five years. The approach to the residence is by green fields of rye, lucerne, and clover mixed with plantain. Gardens and orchards surround the house. Mr. Lawson was the first to bring flowers and fruit trees to Monaro. I had the pleasure of tasting some capital gooseberry, cherry,
and currant wine, made by Mrs. Lawson, which took prizes at the Bombala Agricultural Show. Returning from Mr. Lawson’s I followed what is known as the Chinaman’s track to Delegate. I met a number of Chinamen trudging along this narrow track in Indian file, some leading packhorses, and others again mounted on the tops of the packs. Four miles from Craigie there opened out to view an extensive plain. A mile towards the centre of this plain there stands a church, and not a house is within view. This church is of wood, but rather pretty, though needing repairs. A church yard is enclosed on the same ground, and amongst the graves I noticed those of the Campbell’s, Dr. Rutherford’s, M’Kay’s, Hensleigh’s, Mitchell’s and others. A large willow is growing at the head of the church. A few miles further on and I come to a good general country store, near the Delegate Station. This store is a large structure, and is kept by Mr. J Williams. A post-office is at the store, and Mrs. Caldwell is postmistress. Within sight of the bank of the Delegate River, is the Delegate Station, the property of Miss Campbell, and under the management of Alexander M’Keachie, Esq., an old and respected resident on Monaro. The Home Station and buildings connected therewith are very
comfortable. The extent of the station is about 10 by 5 miles, and it carries about 8000 sheep. Fine paddocks well grassed and watered are at the rear of the residence. I may here mention that after a correspondence extending over two years Mr. M’Keachie has only recently succeeded in having a half-time school established at Delegate. So much for circumlocution. The school is now working admirably under the charge of Mr. Noble, who has twenty-five pupils on the rolls. On the boundary of the colony and about a mile at the back of Mr. M’Keachie’s, is Delegate Cottage and Mr. Henry Heydon’s cattle station. Mr. Heydon was among the first pioneers on Monaro. The run is about four by five miles in extent. Fine green fields are about the house, and all the way from Mr. M’Keachie’s the traveller passes the meadows through which flows a beautifully clear creek, resembling the trout streams in the old country. In view, but a short distance above Mr, Heydon’s is Delegate Hill, with the boundary line between the colonies at its foot. Returning to Mr. M’Keachie’s I remained there that evening, and on the following morning he provided me with a fresh horse, to visit the south-west country; over more plains and lightly timbered country to Corrowang, twelve miles
distant. Corrowang is the station of James O’Hare, Esq , a resident of twenty-six years standing. The station is about twenty miles long and six miles wide, and carries about 20,000 sheep and 700 head of cattle. Corrowang is a somewhat different soil or climate to that nearer Bombala, for it has proved a capital wheat growing country. Mr. O’Hare himself has over seventy acres under cultivation this season, and his shepherds had various quantities up to twenty acres each under wheat. The crop looked splendid, and oats, and barley, were also growing vigorously. The view from the comfortable residence of the proprietor was very fine; hills to the right and well grassed plains away before the door for miles. One in particular I am informed is seven miles long and three or four miles wide. A post office is very much wanted here. There are about thirty families residing at and beyond Corrowang and the nearest post-office is Delegate, when the expense of sending for letters has been borne exclusively by Mr. O’Hare for years. A petition has been presented, and it is to be hoped that it will be granted. I returned to Bombala from Corrowang, having gone south to the boundary of the colony. In my next I purpose giving notes of my visit to Burnima, Mahratta, and other fine stations.

MOUNTAINS: OVER AUSTRALIA’S BLUE HORIZON
Author Alasdair McGregor provides a stunning visual and photographic history of some of Australia’s most wellknown mountains. Alasdair said the book could never be entirely comprehensive therefore it was set out in themes with each chapter focusing on a different mountain and the Snowy Mountains very own Mount Kosciuszko is featured. Australia’s mountains may not stand as tall as mightier peaks stretched across other continents, but they are spectacular in their own right and have their own rich
Alasdair said people ask him ‘what defines a mountain?’ and that is why he decided to call the prologue ‘a hill is another man’s mountain’, in other words does size, as in height, really matter? These mountains can be measured by the yardstick of time rather than height—the great sagas of the earth from its earliest days are inscribed for those who care to look closely. On the top of Mount Everest, you can touch the edge of outer space but in the Australian mountains you can feel the beginning of time.
True to the diversity of the Australian continent, our mountains are home to natural habitats of both exquisite beauty and astonishing variety as well as, sadly, rapidly increasing rarity.
An expansive contemplation of natural, geological and social history, Mountains: Over Australia’s Blue Horizon defies our reputation as the flattest continent on earth, illuminating the landscape in all its breathtaking height and glory.
The book gives history on the Snowy Mountains
history that many of us don’t know and Alasdair captures and shares these stories for his audience.
“I have done the Kiandra to Kosciuszko walk, I’ve been around Mount Jagungal and also did a lot of ski touring on the mountains when I was younger, the Snowy Mountains is a very special place to me.”
Our First Nations People have an enduring spiritual connection to many of these sites, and they have been a rich source of inspiration for many painters, poets, photographers and writers.
today
The new photographic book, Mountains: Over Australia’s Blue Horizon was published and made available to the public last month.
Snowy Mountains where I have spent a lot of time walking the trails,” said Alasdair.
The book focuses on Australia’s most iconic mountains that stretch from the Blue Mountains, Mount Kosciuszko, Flinders Range, Mount Wellington, The Great Dividing Range and more. “Here’s a fun fact for you – many people wouldn’t realise that the Great Dividing Range is the third longest mountain chain on earth, surpassed by the Andes Mountain system in South America and the Rocky Mountains in North America, so that in itself is amazing!” said Alasdair. A lot of research, time and travel went into producing the book taking Alasdair roughly a year to complete and a few of those months were spent focused on the Snowy Mountains.
Alasdair touches on the Ngarigo people and their rich connection with the mountains as going into the history of the Snowy Mountains controversy today involving the wild Brumbies and Kosciuszko National Park conservation battles. “What I find extremely interesting about the Australian Alps, particularly in the Snowies, is its wonderful human history,” “When you think of the Ngarigo people in pursue of the Bogong moths in summer, I find that story and the rich history to be fascinating and I really enjoyed sharing some of the mountains history in my book.” Purchase Mountains: Over Australia’s Blue Horizon today from the National Library of Australia or online at www.booktopia.com.au

Skateboarding, mountain bike riding and scootering will feature in the adventure series with the initiative designed to help the region’s young people recover from the challenges of the Black Summer bushfires and Covid-19. Snowy Monaro Regional Council is partnering with The Shift Corp

MOUNTAIN CATTLEMEN
It has been more than 50 years since the banning of cattle grazing in Kosciuszko National Park, yet the shadow of the high-country cattlemen still looms large over the Snowy Mountains and over the years, the mythology of the Mountain Men has become deeply entrenched in the region’s cultural identity. It took little time for squatters and settlers to move into the high country following hot on the heels of explorers and sometimes even exploring new places themselves. By the 1830s and 1840s there was a steady flow of settlers moving into the high country. It quickly became apparent that the alpine plains and pastures offered lush seasonal grazing in the summer months, leading to a seasonal cycle of driving cattle into the mountains in
the summer time that lasted several generations. Even some of the earliest mountain men also imagined what lay over the other side of the mountains, envisioning undiscovered fertile valleys. The Pendergast brothers, one of the more iconic pioneering families of the mountains, settled the Moonbah area in the 1830s and in 1837, they set off with a few packhorses and a few cattle, following in the footsteps of the naturalist John Lhotsky to discover the fertile Omeo Valley. The Pendergast family built a legacy that continues to this day, and like many of the early drovers, they became key figures in the region’s history and mythology. The high-country cattlemen erected huts to act as shelter while grazing
livestock in the mountains, many of which are still standing today. Thanks to the efforts of organisations such as the Kosciuszko Huts Association, many of them are now heritage listed and make for popular tourist destinations and key stops along many trails and hiking routes. In the 2020/2021 Black Summer Bushfires a. number of the huts were destroyed and plans are underway to rebuild those burned down in the NSW stretch of the mountains. The slab-huts, built from local timber, particularly Alpine Ash, reflect the sturdy vernacular construction used by the mountain men. Throughout the 20th century, livestock grazing in the mountains was gradually prohibited. It began as early as 1900 when it was discovered that cow dung was contaminating rivers and cattle
grazing was stopped in the ACT High Country in order to protect water supplies. Some of the higher parts of Kosciuszko National Park were closed to gazing as early as 1944. In 1967 Kosciuszko was declared a National Park and in 1969, cattle grazing was banned completely, with the last leases ending in 1973. In 1988, Recommendations by the Land Conservation Council and the government purchase of the Wonnangatta Station caused the areas of the Snowy River, Howitt Plains and Wonnangatta Valley to make cattle grazing withdrawals. Over in Victoria, grazing continued in the Alpine National Park until it was banned in 2005. In 2013, 400 cattle were returned to the park in a project to test fire risk reduction from grazing. However, the

project was short lived and the cattle were removed less than a year later. While heated debate continues about the pros and cons of alpine grazing, it’s hard to deny that environmental concerns and politics have essentially ended the era of the Mountain Men. Even harder to deny however, is the hugely influential space they occupy not only in the identity of the mountains, but the identity of our nation as a whole. While their place in the high country is hotly debated, the Snowy Mountains brumbies are a product of the
Mountain Men, who also inspired Banjo Paterson’s iconic 1890 poem The Man from Snowy River. Locals heatedly debate exactly which of the region’s stockmen served as the basis for ‘The Man’, but it’s thanks in large part to Paterson’s poem that the alpine stockmen have transcended local history to become national legends and myths, a hardy and weather-beaten reflection of the Australian identity. Andrew Wortes started his musical journey at a young age, with his debut performance at just seven years old. He developed his diverse and engaging sound throughout his high school
years where he captivated audiences with his blend of pop, rock and folk. In 2017 he was featured on Triple J when his band Tempus Sun released their first single ‘Owls’ and second single ‘Gold’. Andrew has also supported Australian icons Glenn Shorrock and Brian Cadd and released his debut single ‘Supersoaker’ in 2020. Andrew will be playing mostly acoustic guitar and vocals with a mixture of covers and originals.

With the lavender industry booming throughout Australia and the Snowy Monaro, the future of a local region Lavender Trail is looking bright.
“A ‘Lavender Trail’ of specialty niche products produced from different varieties on each farm will make for a unique country visit, adding another attraction to the Snowy Mountains experience.
AgriFutures Australia has the vision of promoting Rural Destination Tourism through ‘destination farming’, featuring value-adding traditional agricultural industries and niche marketing.
“Our vision is for an expansion into other traditional agriculture, value-adding production and workshops so the Trails can co-ordinate and showcase our region to prospective tree-changers and city people craving that special country experience.”
“The Australia wide growth in lavender production and AgriFutures adopting it as one of its emerging industries has seen an amazing recent interest shown in our local region,” Monaro Country Lavender’s Jan Illingworth said.
The MCL Co-op’s second Prospective Growers Workshop on October 31 was again booked out, with interest for the session coming from as far away as Sydney and the Blue Mountains.
“Traditional lavender tourism involves busloads of day trippers, but MCL is working towards adopting a different concept to hopefully encourage longerstay visitation, particularly in our small towns and

Jessica Mauboy to headline Bendigo Bank
Tumbafest 2022 Tumbafest Inc has been bursting with excitement to announce our headline act for our 25th anniversary year. The multi-ARIA Award winning singer and songwriter, Jessica Mauboy will be taking to the main stage at the 2022 Bendigo Bank Tumbafest, performing all her hits and perhaps sharing a taste of her new music that will be released later in 2022.
“The Tumbafest committee is dedicated to consistently enhancing the quality of music each year and has worked extremely hard to secure the lineup for the 25th anniversary star studded event, including headliner Jessica Mauboy,” Committee President Andrew Rae said.
Fresh off her role as a coach on The Voice and right before she heads off on her national The Boss Lady Tour, Tumbafest fans will get to see her up close and personal, helping to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the festival.

top 10 albums, 16 top 20 singles and a whopping 600 million + streams. The Little Things and Pop a Bottle singer said “I can’t wait to see you all and perform live with my band. We’ll be playing all the fan favourites and new music too.” Joining the 25th anniversary celebrations are The Wolfe Brothers, Fanny Lumsden, Hurricane Fall, Southbound and Mollie Waters. Oz Day in Bombala Forget Christmas and New Year’s Eve, it’s time to get ready for Australia Day in Bombala!
With the NSW Strong Wool Shearing Championships being held on the weekend of Australia Day each year in Bombala, it is an important date, and January 29, 2022 is no different.
Of course the Bombala Australia Day Celebration Committee will have to follow the relevant COVID regulations, but are happily determined to forge ahead with a great family event to kick off 2022. The Bombala Australia Day celebrations will include a full day of shearing competition, as well as other traditional favourites such as the Citizen of the Year Awards.
The NSW Strong Wool Shearing Championships will again be the main feature of Australia Day celebrations in Bombala.
The comp will actually kick off at the start of the school holidays this year, with Dave Goodyer measuring and weighing the catches at the Bombala Newsagency, and you can be assured that the bragging photos will be on show for all to see at the Oz Day Celebration. You can check out the Bombala Australia Day Facebook page to get all of the details on the comp, but remember that early start on December 18 and get your line in the water in just a couple of weeks time.
Bombala’s Citizens of the Year and award winners will raise the flag.
This brings us to another new tradition, the Sausage Making Competition, and once again the happy crowd will serve as judges, so the more discerning sausage lovers on board the better!
There will also be an address from the region’s 2022 Australia Day Ambassador, while the National Anthem always concludes the official ceremony of the day.
What else can we throw in? How about an art competition, kids craft and face painting, some incredible raffles and a Mini Triathlon for all ages? Oh and some great food from local community groups, and a full bar!
But it’s not all about years-long tradition, with the recently established Eel & Fishing Competition expected to be a big highlight leading up to the event.
Yes, Australia Day in Bombala is shaping up to be an absolute cracker, so make sure you set aside Saturday, January 29, 2022 for some Aussie fun at the Bombala Exhibition Ground.
The Australia Day Mini Triathlon will kick off the action in Bombala on January 29.

LEAH PURCELL RECEIVES AWARD FOR
Snowy Mountains film Actress Leah Purcell has received an award for her film The Drover’s Wife, which was predominantly filmed at Yaouk, near Adaminaby, in 2019. Showcasing the beautiful Snowy Mountains country, the film was written, directed, co-produced and starred in by the actress. Ms Purcell is the first Australian to have received the Jury Grand Prize at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards, which were hosted on the Gold Coast in November. The film is an adapted version of Ms Purcell’s screen play of the same name, inspired by the short story by Henry Lawson.
The Drover’s WIfe - Leah Purcell
On an isolated property, heavily pregnant Molly Johnson and her children struggle to survive the elements, hunger and a wild bullock. Over the range another lone woman and her children have been murdered. Is it the swagman who visits Molly? Or the run-away black, Yadaka, who helps Molly with the birth and burial of her stillborn baby, forms a bond with her son Danny and with Molly herself, helping her to understand her true identity? New town law-maker Sergeant Nate Clintoff learns Molly’s drover husband is missing and he sends his assistant, Trooper Leslie to
investigate, triggering a chain of events that culminate in the murder of Yadaka, the brutalising of Molly and Molly’s decision to return to town to reclaim her children. A searing Australian revenge Western with love, family, protection, survival, truth, misogyny and racism at its heart, it asks the question: how far do you go to protect the ones you love? In her acceptance speech at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards, Ms Purcell had many to thank, saying film making is a collaborative effort. “I must thank and acknowledge my family Elders, Elders of the Monaro Ngarigo on whose country we filmed, my cast, crew, heads of department, production personnel, producers, distributors, private investors and funding bodies for their tireless effort, expertise, and experience, their trust and belief in me for wearing all of those hats, and actually pulling it off because without them this film would not be possible.” The Drover’s Wife also featured in the Sydney Film Festival in November, however missed out on winning an award. According to Roadshow Films, the movie is set to hit cinemas in May 2022.

NSW NATIONAL PARKS COMMITS TO
NET ZERO BY 2028
The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is set to become the first national parks agency in Australia to commit to being carbon positive, with the recent release of the NPWS Carbon Positive Plan. Environment Minister, Matt Kean said this is another great first for NSW, by 2028 NPWS will remove and store more carbon than it creates, reaching net zero emissions and then becoming carbon positive. “By 2028 the removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by our national parks will exceed the emissions generated by NPWS in managing those parks,” Mr Kean said. “This is a visionary plan that highlights the importance of the national parks in combatting climate change alongside the critical role they already play in the conservation of biodiversity providing home to 85 per cent of threatened

sequestration projects.
“It’s all designed to position NPWS at the forefront of global environmental efforts.”
One of these is at Koonaburra, recently registered with the Clean Energy Regulator, where a regeneration project will boost investment in carbon and conservation works (enhanced feral animal management across the park) to remove around 900,000 tonnes of CO2 in the next 25 years.
NPWS will implement actions to reduce its carbon footprint including switching to 100 per cent renewable energy, electric passenger vehicles, installing onsite solar PV, reducing waste and updating refrigeration and air conditioning assets with high efficiency models. NPWS will also trial electric vehicle charging stations in key park areas to support the community to continue to visit national parks using electric vehicles. National parks also represent one of the largest carbon stores in the state, protecting over 40 per cent of all forest carbon. NPWS will protect these existing carbon stores through effective fire management, and invest in a suite of biodiversity-friendly carbon
The launch of the Plan coincides with the tabling of the Protected and Conserved Areas Joint Statement in Climate Change and Biodiversity at the United Nations climate meeting (COP26) in Glasgow, a declaration by protected area managers from around the world, including the NPWS. “In signing this Statement the NSW Government acknowledges the critical importance of national parks and the commitment the NPWS has to implementing global nature-based solutions, such as revegetation, to
managing our twin environmental crises: the accelerating destruction of nature and climate change,” Mr Kean said. NPWS will also be one of the first government agencies to report biennially on climate-related financial risk, as part of the Taskforce for Climate-related Financial Disclosure and rigorous carbon accounting in alignment with national and international accounting standards. NPWS is currently investigating the level of annual carbon sequestration by national parks and additional data once analysed, may demonstrate a carbon positive position achieved before 2028. The Carbon Positive by 2028 Plan is at : https://environment.nsw.gov.au/topics/ parks-reserves-and-protected-areas/ park-policies/carbon-positive-by-2028
It’s show time! The local town shows are an annual favourite in Cooma and Bombala, as well as local villages such as Nimmitabel, Delegate and Dalgety. While many of the local shows were forced to cancel in 2021 due to Covid-19, they are scheduled to go ahead in 2022 between January and March, ahead of the Sydney Royal Easter Show in April. NIMMITABEL Nimmitabel’s annual show will be held on February 5. This is the first of the local shows each year and is well supported by the local community. The show includes livestock competitions, pavilion sections and a lively entertainment program.
DELEGATE Delegate will host its annual event on March 5. There is a strong emphasis on livestock and horse events at Delegate. DALGETY Dalgety has a reputation for being the biggest little show in the region. Held alongside the iconic Snowy River, this very popular event certainly packs in a crowd each year and has a wide variety of competitions. COOMA The 146th Cooma Show will be held on March 12, 2022 at the Cooma Showground. In 2021, the Cooma Show – like many others – had to be
cancelled due to Covid. However, the 2021 Tommy Turnbull Memorial Horse Show was able to go ahead and the 2022 Cooma Show is shaping up to be better than ever.
artists and musicians. The usual show favourites will of course be present and the Bomnbala exhibition society are excited to confirm the return of the wood-chop after a three-year hiatus.
This years show will incorporate the theme of Monaro Sheep and Wool and will include events and activities based around that theme. The day will include live music and performances, competitions such as wood-chopping and the dog high-jump and much more. There will be stalls, displays, a flower pavilion, arts and crafts, and of course, a full program of horse events..
For this year’s Bombala Show, the main community show will be going ahead on the Saturday March 19, while the horse and pack-breed programs will be going ahead on the Sunday in order to ensure the events covid-safety is maintained.
BOMBALA Bombala show ends the local show circuit on March 19 and 20. The competitions include shearing, the final of the Nimmity Belle Showjumping competition. Held over two days, the show has a very strong equestrian flavour to it as well as a great range of entertainment, especially for the children. Bombala Exhibition Society President and President of the Far South Coast and Snowy Monaro Association of Shows, Sophie Campbell said the lineup of upcoming shows is shaping up to be fantastic, with only the Pambula Show not going ahead in the entire South East Region. “It’s so fantastic that our local shows are able to go ahead in 2022 after so many had to be cancelled last,” Ms Campbell said. “It’s an amazing achievement from our local show societies and the momentum and enthusiasm they’ve exhibited to ensure that our muchloved community town shows can continue to go ahead into the future and will be bigger and better than ever.”

With it’s innaugural run in the 2020/2021 fishing season, the Snowy Trout Challenge was a fantastic success, with hundreds of tagged fish caught and thousands of dollars in prizes won. This year, the Challenge will see more than 500 tagged trout released into six impoundments across the region, each with a tag that will put entrants in the running to win thousands in cash prizes. Running in conjunction with the trout fishing season, successful anglers will be able to enter the competition from until May 31, 2022. The Snowy Trout Challenge is organised by the Cooma, Lake Eucumbene, Jindabyne and Bombala Chambers of Commerce and has seen exbroodstock trout released into Lake Eucumbene, Lake Jindabyne, Lake Crackenback, Black Lake in Bombala, the Murrumbidgee Pumping Station near Cooma and Lake Williams in Nimmitabel.
The $2,000 in cash prizes will be drawn between January and May next year and all eligible tagged rainbow trout caught in October, November, December and January will go into the end of January draw where one person will win the first cash prize. Prizes were brought about thanks to generous sponsorship from Snowy Hydro and Kristy McBain MP. Lake Eucumbene Adaminaby Chamber of Commerce President Tim Corkill said this year’s Trout Challenge is already proving a great success and encouraged everyone to get involved. “The Challenge has been going fantastically so far, with lots of entries already coming in,” Mr Corkill said. “Big thanks to our major sponsor Snowy Hydro who have offered four monthly prizes plus merchandise and sponsor Member for Eden Monaro, Kristy McBain. Good luck to everyone including travellers who can now visit our region for fishing. There are plenty of fish still to be caught.”

With projects like Snowy 2.0 and more people now working from home, the Snowy Monaro is becoming a very desirable place to live. Little towns like Berridale are fast becoming a place for tree changers to call home. This is one of the reasons why an IGA supermarket is currently in the plans for the township. This new service will greatly benefit the town and the region. Visitors on their way to the mountains will also be able to stop to pick up supplies, should they prefer to skip busy supermarkets in Cooma and Jindabyne. It will also give them a chance to stop in at some of the other unique attractions Berridale has to offer, such as gift and clothing shops, cafés and clubs. Along with groceries, frozen foods and fresh produce, the new IGA supermarket would offer the community a deli, bakery service and liquor department, as well as a takeaway café. The development of a supermarket would also present new job opportunities for the town.
The Development Application has been submitted by Andrew and Kellie Power, who aprevisoouly owned Bombala IGA, which they have operated successfully as the sole supermarket in that town. It is expected that the IGA will be ready to open in spring of 2022.

Berridale resident and business owner Annie O’Keeffe said the town is particularly excited by the announcement. “It’s an absolute game changer for our little town and a game changer for more than 6,000 people I’d say. While the Woollies home delivery service has been fantastic during COVID, it will be great to be able to go to the local shops,” Annie said. “People from Dalgety, Eucumbene and all around have been saying how excited they are and how they will be doing their shopping in Berridale if the IGA opens up. It’s so exciting for our town, especially since it’s the Powers from Bombala who are behind it, so it will truly be a local store. Just an absolute game changer.”

New double chair for CHARLOTTE PASS
Charlotte Pass Snow Resort advises that the formal development application for the new Guthrie’s Double Chairlift has been lodged with the NSW Department of Planning.
The completed application for the new chairlift follows a year of planning work by various consultants engaged by Charlotte Pass Snow Resort for the project. The application includes a biodiversity conservation and native vegetation management study of the area where construction is to take place. The new double chairlift will replace the existing Guthrie’s high speed poma lift. Charlotte Pass Snow Resort has had ski lifts in the Mt Guthrie area of the resort for close on 60 years. Chairman of Charlotte Pass Snow Resort, Kevin Blyton, said, “the chairlift represents
another investment of close to 3 million dollars by the Blyton Group in the resort and is a part of the 10-year masterplan which is presently underway”.
General Manager of Charlotte Pass Snow Resort, Angela Murdoch, said, “planning work for the development application had been a major project for resort staff over the last 12 months and they were excited for the application to be lodged and await approval so the next phase of construction of the project could occur”. Jindabyne based Doppelmayr Australia have been awarded the contract for construction of the lift. The application is now subject to regulatory approval by the Department of Planning and the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

New cycling strategy open for consultation
The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is calling all cyclists to have their say on a draft cycling strategy so national parks can provide some of the best cycling experiences anywhere in the country.
“We are in the middle of a bike boom and there is now no better place to jump on two wheels than in our National Parks, it’s a great way to experience and see our natural biodiversity first hand,” said Mr Kean.
Environment Minister Matt Kean said with more and more people taking to two wheels and with investment in NPWS visitor infrastructure at record levels, our Parks network will become must-do destinations for riders of all ages.
“But the key is to make sure it’s sustainable and sensitive to the environment, we don’t want to see damage to our precious biodiversity and cultural heritage. “Cyclists love the great outdoors and we want to work with them to
incorporate their ideas on how to ‘tread’ lightly and move forward with this strategy.” The NPWS is asking for feedback on a new cycling strategy that outlines how to balance the demand for a variety of cycling experiences with our responsibility to protect national parks’ natural and cultural values. Not all cycling activities will be appropriate in all national parks, unauthorised tracks in parks can be dangerous and this draft strategy looks at
how to manage illegal tracks to prevent further ecological or cultural damage. As part of ongoing community consultation, NPWS is calling on cyclists, mountain biking associations and other interest groups to help shape the strategy and invites submissions before 30 January 2022 . Community consultation sessions will also be run with key stakeholders over the coming weeks. To read the draft strategy and to make a submission visit HER www.authsc.environment.nsw.gov.au

Recycling for
SNOWY MOUNTAINS WILDLIFE! The local volunteer wildlife rescue group is excited to announce it is participating in the recycling Return and Earn initiative!
Simply select ‘LAOKO ‘ as your preferred charity when depositing your empties. Together we will be helping wildlife and the environment while raising money for the rescue and rehabilitation of the local native wildlife in the Snowy Mountains region.
Snowy Mountains Wildlife Rescue (LAOKO – Looking After Our Kosciuszko Orphans) is taking part in a recycling program. As part of the Return and Earn campaign ‘Recycling for Snowy Mountains Wildlife’, SMWR LAOKO have been granted the Woolworths Lake Jindabyne Hotel Return and Earn machine located at 21 McClure St, Jindabyne. Fundraising for our local native wildlife has never been easier for our local community and visitors to our region!
All donations will be used to purchase special marsupial milk formula, feed for native birds (seed, special formula mix, and even mice!) and equipment used for the treatment of mange in wombats and train volunteers. You can also participate from anywhere in NSW when you return home. All you need to do is: 1. Simply download the myTOMRA app (available from your App store or Google Play store)
SMWR LAOKO is a not-for-profit group, licenced through the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services to rescue, raise, rehabilitate and release, sick, injured and orphaned wildlife in the Snowy Mountains. There are no paid staff.
2. Look up LAOKO under the “Charities” menu and set our fundraising campaign as your preferred payout method
Last year SMWR LAOKO received over 1,000 calls for assistance for wildlife and rescued over 800 birds and animals, and treated about 235 wombats for mange, and had an annual operating cost of $88, 841. SMWR LAOKO relies on donations to assist wildlife. You can help us help wildlife by taking your empty drink containers to deposit with the Lake Jindabyne Hotel Return and Earn machine for a refund of 10 cents apiece and donate this directly to SMWR LAOKO.
3. Scan the app using our unique onscreen barcode, return containers and press “TRANSFER” on the RVM screen when finished! Too easy! 100% of the refunds will be transferred to LAOKO and help ‘Recycling for Snowy Mountains Wildlife’. Every year, about 1.4 trillion cans and bottles are used worldwide. Some are recycled but too many of them end up in our streets, oceans and landfills. Containers such as plastic bottles, glass bottles and aluminium cans take many years to decompose.
Support Snowy Mountains wildlife from anywhere in NSW - simply download the MyTOMRA App!
You can contribute to a cleaner, healthier and happier planet by collecting your empty beverage containers and returning them to your nearest TOMRA reverse vending machines and help wildlife in the Snowy Mountains at the same time. It is a win win!
If you require assistance with sick, injured or orphaned wildlife, please call the SMWR LAOKO 24/7 emergency hotline on 02 6456 1313. Thank you for your support!

“One of the club’s most significant grants came from the NSW Government to allow us to improve the course’s irrigation system,” George said. “Improving the irrigation has helped provide a better and more reliable water supply to each green. “Before this project, only a few greens had sprinklers set up on them but now all the greens do and our greenkeeper can turn them on and off via an app. This makes looking after the greens easier and water can be turned on at any time.” Further grants have helped the club install solar panels on the clubhouse roof, upgrade the amenities and secure the course’s water supply. “We were fortunate to receive a grant from the Boco Rock Community Enhancement Fund to install a three-phase pump to provide more water from the dam,” George said. “Being able to better access water from our main dam saves us having to pump as often from the Murrumbidgee River which we are licensed to do. “Our course has a greatly improved water supply and with local contractors making the dam deeper, the water supply is more reliable and saves having to pump from the river as often.’ round at the Cooma course. George believes the course is in the best shape it has been for many years.
at our recent junior open, a golfer said our greens are playing as good as any course in these regions.”
“Our course is looking fantastic at the moment. The greens are in top condition thanks to lots of work from greenkeeper Ben Neilson and our volunteers,” George said.
In his five years as president, George is proud of the work the club has achieved. He said the club has been successful in securing numerous grants which have allowed for course and clubhouse improvements to take place.
“We are attracting golfers from across the south east and Canberra area, and
As golfers navigate their way around the course, a stray drive or wayward iron shot will unveil many areas brimming with plant and tree life. The club has partnered with Landcare to plant hundreds of native trees to help counter tree dieback that is prevalent across the Snowy Monaro. “We’ve planted in areas away from play. Landcare has helped plant many trees and there has even been interested from the CSIRO into our flowering natives,” George said. “In the future, the course will not only be a place for golfers but for people seeking a wildlife experience. We’ve been told the course is home to rare plant and bird species. Landscaping upgrades have the course looking better than ever with new pathways and garden beds a feature of improvement works. Work is underway to turn the 15th hole into a feature hole through landscaping work and tree plantings. George envisages a tee-off that will provide a beautiful backdrop while golfers try to negotiate a tricky fairway. Through the hard work of the Cooma Golf Club, the course has enhanced its reputation as one of the finest in country NSW.

for the bull and horse events. Maintenance of the holding yards for stock is ongoing and expected to be completed soon. Jindabyne’s Man From Snowy River Rodeo event has been held in Jindabyne since 1943, originating in Old Jindabyne from 1943 to 1945 with all proceeds going towards the Australian Comfort Fund (ACF) which contributed and assisted the War effort. From 1946 to 1954 bush races and a sports day replaced the rodeo with proceeds going to support the Bush Nurses Association to assist in the purchase of much needed basic medical services for this relatively remote area. One of these years saw the Rodeo moved from Jindabyne to the top of Charlotte Pass Village in what is now the Kosciuszko National Park. The year 1955 saw the return of the Rodeo to the Jindabyne sports oval on Boxing Day and with the exception of no Rodeo in 1965 because of the move from the Old Town to ‘new’ Jindabyne and washouts in 1981 and 1988, it has been held in Jindabyne ever since. The Rodeo Committee remains a nonprofit entity run by a dedicated group of volunteers with all proceeds being directed towards the local community and ensuring the future viability of conducting this local event. Held every year at the John Connors Oval, Park Road, at the Jindabyne Sports Ground rodeo enthusiasts travel from all over the country to take part in this extreme sport extravaganza.
It’s always a great day out for the family with side shows, food stalls, barbecue and bar facilities available. Events include the Open Bull Ride Saddle Bronc, Open Bareback, Poley Buck Jump for all locals to get involved and show off their skills as well as junior and senior barrel racing events plus the ladies only steer ride which has been a big hit in previous years. A new event being welcomed to the rodeo this year will be the Novice Bareback, this event has been included to capture an ever-increasing interest in young horse riders trying to get into the Open Bareback event. More than $35,000 has been spent on the rodeo grounds improvements since the last rodeo in 2019 and this has been made possible mainly due to the support the committee has received from sponsors and volunteers within the community. The event will be running with the same format as previous years being able to purchase your ticket at the gate on the day of the event. Providing nothing changes there will not be any prepurchasing of tickets required. NSW Government Covid-19 protocols will be in place and everyone is asked to please comply with the NSW Government health orders.
