Commencing international students, enrolling into a Faculty of Information Technology undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree at an Australian Monash University campus, will be eligible for either an International Merit Scholarship or for a Course Fee Allowance. Faculty of Information Technology Course Fee Allowance

All international applications are assessed for the Faculty of Information Technology International Merit Scholarship. Eligibility and scholarship value are based on academic results from the applicant’s previous study. No scholarship application is necessary.

Commencing international students who are not awarded a Faculty of Information Technology International Merit Scholarship and who are not government-sponsored, will receive a one-off course fee allowance of A$1000 (to be deducted from the first semester’s course tuition fees) upon accepting their offer to enrol in a postgraduate coursework Information Technology degree at Monash University.

• Level one scholarship value: A$1500 per semester • Level two scholarship value: A$2500 per semester The scholarship is to be deducted from the course tuition fees for the first two semesters of study. Subsequent Faculty of Information Technology International Merit Scholarships will be offered to continuing students who meet the eligibility criteria upon completion of two semesters of study with the Faculty of Information Technology.

Students who receive the Course Fee Allowance may have the opportunity to qualify for a Merit Scholarship in later semesters, providing that they meet required academic performance criteria.

Master of Applied Information Technology � The Master of Applied Information Technology (MAIT) degree is an effective means of opening up new career possibilities in IT fields ranging from applications programming through to systems analysis. It is ideal for people looking for a change of direction who already have a qualification in a non-IT field. This 16-unit course provides students with the knowledge, understanding and skills to deal effectively with advanced issues involving the application of information technology. It prepares students for work in the information technology industry in numerous roles. The program includes core units in programming, computer technology, database technology and systems analysis and design, as well as electives selected from a range of specialisations: • � Data management • � Distributed and mobile systems • � Intelligent systems • � Internet and web application development • � network computing

Entry requirements Entry into the mAIT degree requires a completed qualification equivalent to an Australian undergraduate degree, but not necessarily in an IT-related discipline, with an overall pass average. Domestic candidates without formal tertiary qualifications can apply to enter via a pathway from the faculty’s Professional certificate in Information Technology, which is intended to lead to a graduate diploma. Upon successful completion of this graduate diploma (with the advice of the course director), students may be eligible to articulate into the master of Applied Information Technology. (further details on page 21).

The mAIT course, provides formal postgraduate credentials to advance your IT career across any industry. The Graduate Diploma in IT and the Graduate certificate in IT are entry and exit qualifications in this degree.

course structure The mAIT requires the successful completion of eight units (48 points) from the mAIT foundation units, including a case study, at least six, level-5 elective units (36 points) from the list of mAIT specialisations and up to two elective units (12 points). Students can choose units from all Specialisations listed on page 8 and 9 to meet the course requirements. Seven specialisations are offered within the degree, although not all units and/or specialisations may be offered in any one year. Specialisations are optional and any completed specialisation(s) appear on a student’s academic transcript. All units are 6 points.

Ashwin Manoharan Master of Information Technology Professional After completing an undergraduate degree in computer science, Ashwin

Master of Information Technology � The Master of Information Technology (MIT) is an extensive and practical program suitable for students who already have a qualification in a technical IT field. The flexible structure allows students to choose a specific area of study or select a range of units from different areas to gain a competitive edge in the employment market.

Entry requirements Entry into the mIT program requires a completed qualification equivalent to an Australian undergraduate degree in computing, computer science or a technical IT field with an overall pass average. Units in system analysis and design, data structures, and programming need to have been completed. Entry to the mIT (honours) degree requires an overall credit average for the entire undergraduate degree and a distinction average for final year IT units. Domestic candidates without formal tertiary qualifications can apply to enter via a pathway from the faculty’s Executive certificate in Information Technology, which is intended to lead to a postgraduate diploma. Upon successful completion of this postgraduate diploma (with course director advice), students may be eligible to articulate into the master of Information Technology. (further details page 21).

The MIT Professional requires the successful completion of twelve units (72 points) from the mIT program units, and up to four elective units (24 points) approved by the course director.

The MIT (Honours) requires the successful completion of eight units (48 points) from the mIT program units, fIT5185 Introduction to IT research methods (6 points), a 24-point minor thesis, and up to three elective units (18 points) approved by the course director. Programs The mIT program, provides the conceptual and theoretical framework within which students can appreciate and integrate new software and hardware technologies. Graduates of the mIT program will have the knowledge and skills to solve complex social, economic and technical problems within the context of information technology. Distributed and mobile computing systems have evolved into a solid and widely recognised platform for building applications which are in high demand by industry, government and commerce. Skill sets that include knowledge of this area will be in even more demand in the future, given the growth in internet and web-based systems. The distributed and mobile systems specialisation covers areas in enabling technologies such as wireless and mobile networks, parallel computing infrastructure, computational grids, software agent technology as well as the developmental areas of fault tolerant systems, distributed programming paradigms and related technologies.

The capacity for enterprise data assets to provide true business value hinges on effective and efficient data management practices. Data management is also the key driver of a large sector of the information technology software market, second only to operating systems in market value. A specialisation in data management provides the knowledge and skills to become a highly valued practitioner and/or researcher in this vital area. Important emerging areas such as multimedia retrieval models, search engine algorithms, web personalisation and semi-structured data management are covered in addition to distributed databases and advanced programming for database applications.

Intelligent systems are integral to the smart use of information technology. Intelligent systems technologies include: expert systems, agent architectures, distributed artificial intelligent systems, knowledge discovery and data mining, machine learning, simulation, natural models of computation and optimisation and problem solving. This specialisation provides the knowledge and skills to work as an AI programmer, knowledge engineer, senior designer or consultant. In addition to learning detailed techniques, a foundational understanding of intelligent systems methodologies, their limits and their contrasting capabilities is acquired.

Given the ubiquity of the web, a key area of expertise for IT professionals is in developing and delivering innovative and scalable web applications and services. Security is one of the major areas of concern for any organisation which uses information and database systems. Both universities and industry are engaged in highly active research into the development of techniques that can enhance security in computer systems. There is strong demand for professionals who have a sound understanding in the theory and practice of IT security. By specialising in security, students develop their expertise in this crucial area. The units in the specialisation capture the foundational principles of information and network security through to more advanced areas of secure software development, virtual private networking and information forensics.

Dr Chris Mears Research fellow Chris completed his Bachelor of Software Engineering (Honours) in 2005 and in the same year received a Vice-Chancellor’s Undergraduate Research Scholarship. The decision to continue on with his studies was made during the final year of study. “I enjoyed the taste of research during my studies in the honours program and wanted to continue this further,” he said. “My area of interest is constraint programming and combinatorial optimisation. Masters by research � Master of Business Systems (Research) The course provides training and research in the analysis, design, development and application of information technology to management and decision-making. This involves the study of business-related techniques, practices and procedures in areas such as management, commercial, financial, health and industrial systems leading to an understanding of the application of computer systems and information technology for business purposes. Areas of research may include business decision support systems, business modelling, data-mining and e-commerce systems, as well as financial, accounting, health care and administrative systems. Students undertake independent research for the thesis component of the course. The thesis comprises 75 to 100 per cent of assessment, with the remainder taken in coursework units.

Research scholarships Scholarships are available for full-time study at postgraduate level at any one of monash University’s Australian campuses. This course prepares students for a professional and academic career in the field of information management and systems research and practice. It will provide students with the skills needed to conduct research projects in the field related to information products, processes, services and systems within and between organisations. Master of Information Technology (Research) The course provides computing graduates with the opportunity to undertake advanced research within one of the faculty’s schools. The degree is offered by 100 per cent research or, in some cases, as a combination of coursework and research. Research can be undertaken in the disciplines of multimedia technology, business systems, computer science, computer technology, information systems, digital communications, software development, systems development, or network computing.

The mPhil is a 100 per cent research program. A research candidate is required to undertake a program of supervised research within a school of the faculty resulting in the completion of a thesis with a maximum of 50,000 words. Prospective research candidates are expected to have identified a certain research area of interest prior to applying. They are required to discuss the proposed research project, as well as availability of supervision and facility to conduct research, with the school in which they are seeking candidature. In fulfilling the requirements for supervised study and research at the university, a candidate is required to be present at the Sunway campus of monash University on a regular basis and to be involved in the intellectual life of the university and the relevant school.
