The Mondavi Center spirit is inspired by our home on the UC Davis campus, and by you, our audience.

A message from Don Roth Welcome to the Mondavi Center’s 13–14 Season! I am pleased to introduce you to the remarkable collection of musicians and composers, dancers and choreographers, writers and actors that will join us at UC Davis in the year ahead. These artists embody the Mondavi Center spirit: curiosity, passion, virtuosity and a deep appreciation for beauty in all its forms. It is a spirit that is inspired by our home, here on the UC Davis campus, and by you, our audience, as well. Time and time again our artists comment not only on the beauty and acoustics of our wonderful venue, but on the wonderful reception they experience in our community. We very much appreciate our special good fortune to be able to bring our artists and audiences together. To the right, we have outlined some key themes to help guide you through the riches of the season ahead. But there is so much to discover: I encourage you to take your time with this book and linger over the descriptions of the many great artists and ensembles, from the familiar to the new, we will present as part of our 2013–14 season. I look forward to sharing this journey of discovery and enjoyment with you!

Don Roth, Ph.D. Executive Director

Connecting

VST Visions

It is always a good idea to defer to the wisdom of Thelonious Monk, who famously told a radio DJ, “The piano ain’t got no wrong notes.” The same sentiment easily extends to the dizzying variety of keyboard artists in the 13–14 season.

We believe that presenting performances is only part of our role in the arts ecosystem of our region. Forging personal connections between audiences and local artists of all ages to these amazing performers is a key to building the next generation of Mondavi Center fans. To that end, we always strive to make those connections happen with artists throughout each season.

The Larry and Rosalie Vanderhoef Studio Theatre (VST) has long been the place to experience artists pushing at the boundaries, stretching traditional formats and looking to the future of their respective art forms. Often, this work does not fit neatly into a series, so we have decided to embrace the intrepid spirit of the VST and sell these events on their own.

The Mondavi Center will host debut solo recitals from acclaimed pianist Murray Perahia, organ phenomenon Cameron Carpenter and a day-long marathon of all 32 Beethoven Piano Sonatas by Stewart Goodyear. Anthony de Mare will interpret the songs of Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim and Jean-Yves Thibaudet joins the young musicians of the Bahia Orchestra Project in a performance of Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Minor. The keyboard riches are (almost) embarrassing in our jazz series, starting off with the long-awaited Mondavi Center debut of Ahmad Jamal in Jackson Hall. Two stunning trios will be featured in the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre led by Fred Hersch (a pianist who knows his way around the Monk songbook) and the inimitable Hammond B-3 guru Dr. Lonnie Smith.

Residency activities are built into many of our series including Concert, Debut, Dance, Crossings and Distinguished Speakers. Additionally, the San Francisco Symphony regularly works with the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra as well as area high school musicians. In 2013–14, one residency deserves special recognition: Stephen Petronio, one of the leading choreographers working today, will settle in for a week-long visit that will include master classes, a conversation with UC Davis Provost Ralph Hexter, a run of shows highlighting Petronio’s 30-plus years of creativity, all capped by the Mondavi Center debut of his new work, Like Lazarus Did.

To kick off this new approach, and to make this innovative work more accessible, we have lowered prices for all VST Visions events, starting at just $10 for all students and children. From the immersive multimedia family performances by Italy’s Compagnia TPO to the intimate “reality” theater of Two Men Talking these are performances that deserve the widest possible audience. We hope you will follow us into the world of VST visions this season.

For 2013–14, that list includes an all-day piano marathon featuring a pianist of awesome talent, a recital by one of the finest young sopranos on the opera scene today, and a jazz legend paying tribute to a “working class hero” and rock and roll icon. Acclaimed young pianist Stewart Goodyear will play the entire cycle, from memory, in less than 24 hours! Known for his imaginative playing (he is one of the rare classical musicians to always improvise his cadenzas when performing concertos from the classical period), Goodyear’s decision to tackle these masterworks in one day is an inspired choice. “The Beethoven piano sonatas are what compelled me to become a pianist, and I knew that my first solo recordings must start with all of them,” Goodyear says in the liner notes to his recording of the Beethoven cycle. “I cannot choose a group from these sonatas to record and feel whole. From the time I first heard them, I saw all the sonatas as a set, a retrospective of Beethoven’s art and his life.”

Bill Frisell

Leah Crocetto, soprano The Mondavi Center first presented Leah Crocetto in our annual Rising Stars of Opera concert (see pg. 22), when she was still part of the San Francisco Opera’s Adler Fellow program. This young soprano is now earning well-deserved raves from audiences and the press (the San Francisco Chronicle has called her both “outlandishly gifted” and “a major operatic star”). From her standout 2010 win at the Metropolitan Opera Council Auditions to her recent debut at Venice’s storied La Fenice opera house, the stunning trajectory of Crocetto’s career makes us pleased to have her return for a vocal recital in majestic Jackson Hall.

All We Are Saying: The Songs of John Lennon All We Are Saying has long been in the works, one could say as far back as the first time guitarist Bill Frisell heard the Beatles at the age of 13. “John Lennon’s music has been with me, the band, everybody, the world ... seems like forever,” says Frisell. “The songs are part of us. In our blood. There was nothing we really needed to do to prepare for this. We’ve been preparing our whole lives.” Frisell brings his meditative, open sound and a trusted ensemble consisting of Jenny Scheinman (violin), Tony Scherr (bass), Greg Leisz (guitars) and Kenny Wollesen (drums) to perform a definitive, straight-ahead take on the classic songs of John Lennon.

Czech Suite for Octet New Work Octet Septet

In designing the Berlin Philharmonie, Hans Scharoun (1893-1972) created a concert hall that was unique in the world, undertaking a synthesis between innovation and awareness of tradition and opening up new approaches to artistic communication—ideals to which the Scharoun Ensemble is also committed. Founded in 1983 by members of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Scharoun Ensemble is one of Germany’s leading chamber music organizations. Inspiring audiences in Europe and elsewhere for more than a quarter of a century, their wide repertoire ranges from composers of the Baroque period by way of Classical and Romantic chamber music to contemporary works, including, for this performance, a new composition by UC Davis music professor Kurt Rohde.

Gil Shaham, violin

Murray Perahia, piano

The New York Times succinctly sums up the appeal of Gil Shaham’s playing: “flawless precision and gleeful command.” In his 2011 appearance at the Mondavi Center, Shaham turned in a stunning performance of Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2 with the St. Louis Symphony. For his return engagement, the violinist gives a rare solo recital, featuring as a centerpiece William Bolcom’s Suite No. 2 for Solo Violin. Commissioned through Music Accord (a consortium of presenters that includes the Mondavi Center) for Shaham, the Bolcom piece is a lyrical, playful piece with distant roots in the Baroque dance-suite form. As Shaham said: “I feel very proud of my violin knowledge ... But I find that with Bill that he is able to teach me about the violin things that I did not know.”

In the more than 40 years he has been performing on the concert stage, American pianist Murray Perahia has become one of the most sought-after and cherished musicians of our time. His vast discography—recently collected by Sony Classics in a special box set titled The First 40 Years—reveals a compelling, sensitive mastery of multiple pillars of the piano repertoire, including Chopin, Bach, Beethoven and Brahms. This long overdue engagement is certain to be a highlight of the 13-14 season.

Cameron Carpenter, organ Cameron Carpenter’s goals are anything but modest: the brash, outspoken and phenomenally talented musician and composer wants the organ recognized as a premier recital instrument on par with violins and pianos. As with most trailblazers, Carpenter has energy and vision equal to his talent: His repertoire—from the complete works of J. S. Bach and Cesar Franck to his hundreds of transcriptions of non-organ works, his original compositions and his collaborations with jazz and pop artists—is perhaps the largest and most diverse of any organist. And his knack for engaging audiences, often spending more than an hour before each concert shaking hands and signing autographs, underscores his commitment and passion for his work.

Collaborators include composer Son Lux, renowned visual artist Janine Antoni, costume designer H. Petal, and longtime lighting designer Ken Tabachnick. The work features Petronio’s rich, kinetic movement language and an original electroacoustic score that draws from a range of spiritual music and texts, from early American slave songs to the meditative drones of Eastern mysticism. Petronio and his collaborators draw on ideas of transcendence, elevation and regeneration.

New York Polyphony

Fast-rising stars on the classical music scene, the male vocal quartet New York Polyphony garnered praise for a “rich, natural sound that’s larger and more complex than the sum of its parts” (National Public Radio). They make their Mondavi Center debut with Faith and Reason, a program of ancient and modern a capella works. The centerpiece is the Missa Charles Darwin, a daring new work composed by Gregory Brown in cooperation with New York Polyphony. The work is a modern mass setting that replaces the standard sacred texts with excerpts from Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species and Descent of Man. The vocal ensemble’s refined musicianship and interpretive detail will be on full display as they add a reflective and modern touch to a program that ranges from austere medieval melodies to cutting-edge contemporary works.

SFJAZZ Collective

jazz

10th Anniversary Tour

2013 is a great year for the SFJAZZ organization. The new SFJAZZ Center opened in January in the heart of San Francisco’s performing arts district, and its flagship band, the SFJAZZ Collective, is celebrating its 10th anniversary. As soloists, composers and bandleaders, they represent what’s happening now in jazz. Hailing from Puerto Rico, New York, Venezuela, Philadelphia, New Zealand, Miami and Israel, the Collective’s multi-cultural lineup mirrors the explosion of jazz talent around the globe. The Collective has made a habit of providing fresh perspective on jazz repertoire through original arrangements of jazz legends from Thelonious Monk to Ornette Coleman. To celebrate in style, the octet will reach back into this richsongbook, polishing the gems from each of their preceding annual recordings and taking them out on tour.

Ahmad Jamal

Like all great jazz masters, Ahmad Jamal plays music that feels both timeless and utterly of the moment. The pianist’s orchestral approach to small ensemble playing influenced generations of bandleaders, including trumpeter Miles Davis, who claimed Jamal as an inspiration: “He knocked me out with his concept of space, his lightness of touch, his understatement.” Jamal’s piano style unites expansive lyricism and trenchant grooves, and his repertoire draws on original tunes and surprisingly fresh interpretations of well-loved standards. In all, a Mondavi Center debut that is long overdue!

Fred Hersch Trio

Fred Hersch’s piano playing draws you close and makes you think—a perfect match for the intimate confines of the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre. Over the span of his career, Hersch has quietly, yet forcefully, been pushing jazz piano forward as a pianist, composer, bandleader and teacher. His influence has been widely felt through a new generation of jazz pianists, from former Hersch students including Brad Mehldau and Ethan Iverson of the Bad Plus, to Jason Moran, who has said, “Fred at the piano is like LeBron James on the basketball court. He’s perfection.” An artist of unbounded imagination, ambition and skill, Hersch is, as Downbeat Magazine aptly declared, “one of the small handful of brilliant musicians of his generation.”

Dr. Lonnie Smith Trio There are few pairings as natural and inspiring as Dr. Lonnie Smith and his Hammond B-3 organ. Underneath his trademark turban, flashing an infectious smile, Smith conveys nothing less than the sheer joy of music making. His 2012 album, The Healer, is a master class in organ trio dynamics, slipping between funky soul-jazz and gentle balladry, with all kinds of musical byways in between. His current trio (featuring guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg and drummer Jamire Williams) proves that, after 40plus years behind the keys, the good doctor is most decidedly in the groove and has plenty more to teach us mere mortals.

Chris Thile, solo Chris Thile, of the Punch Brothers, is a mandolin virtuoso, composer and vocalist. With his broad outlook that encompasses progressive bluegrass, classical, rock and jazz, Thile transcends the borders of conventionally circumscribed genres, creating a distinctly American canon and a new musical aesthetic for performers and audiences alike. Recently awarded a MacArthur Fellowship, in February 2013, Thile also won a Grammy for his work on The Goat Rodeo Sessions, collaborating with Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer and Stuart Duncan. Punch Brothers, described by The Times of London as “brilliant, audacious, original and, above all, entertaining,” released its latest album, Who’s Feeling Young Now?, in 2012 on Nonesuch Records. In Spring 2013, Thile releases Bach Sonatas & Partitas Vol. 1, also on Nonesuch Records. On this new program, he draws from his new Bach recording, while also exploring his own compositions and contemporary music.

Jonathan Batiste and Stay Human Band Sometimes the greatest superlative you can assign to an artist is “indescribable.” Jonathan Batiste would likely take it as a compliment. From a renowned lineage of performers, this New Orleans native (he’s been featured on HBO’s Treme) has taken New York by storm, performing everywhere from jazz clubs to subway cars—literally wherever the music takes him. The Juilliard graduate’s main instrument is the harmonaboard (you might know it as a melodica), but he and his band are known to pick up anything that isn’t bolted down if it makes them groove. Whether it is second line marches or the latest track by Lady Gaga, Batiste and his bandmates break stereotypes while staying true to their roots—and do it in a way that is as indescribable as it is insanely entertaining.

THE INTERGALACTIC NEMESIS Live-Action Graphic Novel Book One: Target Earth

The year is 1933. Are you ready for the adventure? The Intergalactic Nemesis Live-Action Graphic Novel is a one-of-a-kind theatrical experience that mashes up radio drama with comic-books. Three actors voice dozens of characters; one Foley artist creates hundreds of sound effects; one keyboardist performs a score of thousands (yes, thousands!) of notes; while on a two-story high screen we project more than 1,250 individual, full-color, hand-drawn, hi-res, blow-your-mind comic book images to tell the story visually. Inspired by Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars and the pulp serials of the 1930s, The Intergalactic Nemesis is a spectacle unlike any other, and it’s for the kid in everyone.

Mnozil Brass In 2012–13, the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain took the Mondavi Center by storm in a sold-out show. With that success in mind, we declare this season the year of the brass band, and there is none better than Austria’s Mnozil Brass. This is infectious, energetic, downright effervescent music that conveys joy and skill in equal measure, all rolled up with offbeat humor, physical comedy and serious chops (an a cappella-infused cover of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” anyone?). One glance at Mnozil’s YouTube videos (many of which have well over 1,000,000 views) quickly turns the curious into converts, but it is the unforgettable live experience that will create lifelong fans.

Sangam

“Part parade spectacle, part halftime show and part cutting-edge contemporary music concert.”

—The New York Times on Asphalt Orchestra

Charles Lloyd, Zakir Hussain and Eric Harland In Sanskrit, sangam means confluence. A fitting metaphor for these three revered improvisers working across cultures and genres to create a wholly original musical experience. Born as a tribute to drummer Billy Higgins, who passed in 2001, the trio has evolved into a fascinating project, built on the complex rhythmic interplay of Zakir Hussain (tabla) and Eric Harland (drums), tethered together by the unifying presence of Charles Lloyd on saxophones, flutes, tarogato, piano and percussion. Spiritual, playful and undeniably virtuosic, this is music that reaches for transcendence and rarely falls short of the mark.

AKOKA: The End of Time David Krakauer, Matt Haimovitz, Socalled and friends The story behind AKOKA is simple, but the spiritual and humanitarian themes of this work are profound. Olivier Messiaen composed “Quartet for the End of Time” in a German prison camp. Renowned clarinetist Henri Akoka performed the premiere, also in a prison camp, and remarked that it was “the only memory of the war that I wish to keep”; however, he never again performed it. The piece would become a seminal work of the 20th century, transcending the bleak circumstances from which it came.

Crossings is where genre walls collapse, leaving audiences and artists the freedom to focus on the work itself. Liberating, free-spirited and always featuring the highest artistry around.

The Messiaen work is bookmarked between two new compositions (one by Krakauer, the other by hip hop artist Socalled) in a way that “lifts” it out of the polite confines of a normal chamber music performance. The collaboration brings out the human aspect of Messiaen’s composition seen through the “eyes” of one individual caught up in terrifying events beyond his control.

Berlin: Songs of Love and War, Peace and Exile Descriptions of Theo Bleckmann tend to run long and effusive: long, because his singular talent is so difficult to capture in words, and effusive because his gifts are so profound. His three-and-a half octave voice delights both through its beauty and through the element of surprise and mischief Bleckmann builds into each performance. A salve for ears tired of yesterday’s standards, Bleckmann returns to the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre to pay tribute to his native Germany and Weimar-era cabaret with selections by Kurt Weill and others, drawn from his 2008 recording, Berlin: Songs of Love and War, Peace and Exile.

“An adventurous project ... Mr. de Mare performed with vivid commitment throughout, fully plumbing the nuances of each work.” —The New York Times on Liaisons Anthony de Mare

Lara Downes

Sondheim without lyrics? It might seem counterintuitive, but a first listen to Anthony de Mare’s visionary Liaisons project reveals the genius in the idea. These solo piano pieces, arranged by a who’s who of composers (including Fred Hersch, Jake Heggie, Frederick Rzewski and Nico Muhly), put the focus on Sondheim’s power and complexity as a composer. Under the sure touch of acclaimed concert pianist de Mare (who last appeared at the Mondavi Center as part of the American Piano Project in 2009) this is a solo piano project that brings the best of musical theater into the concert hall.

Frank Sinatra called Billie Holiday his single greatest musical influence—and he wasn’t alone; no less than Sarah Vaughan, Anita O’Day and Dinah Washington, and countless others, claim “Lady Day” as a formative influence. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the jazz icon’s birth (April 7, 1915), pianist Lara Downes remembers Holiday with solo transcriptions of songs Lady Day made famous, including “God Bless the Child,” “I Cover the Waterfront,” “Strange Fruit,” “Solitude” and “But Beautiful.” Solo piano transcriptions by Jed Distler.

Spirit of Uganda

Eva Yerbabuena

“Young, proud and marvelously spirited musicians and dancers” (Village Voice). There’s no better way to describe Spirit of Uganda. These messengers of courage and hope are impassioned ambassadors of a rich culture. To the melodic tones of standing drums, with dramatic choreography, bright, layered rhythms and gorgeous call-and-response vocals, the ensemble, ages 8–18, oscillates between ferocity and softness as it brings to life the sounds and movements of East Africa. Representing Uganda’s 2.7 million orphans, these children personify the resilience and promise of Africa’s next generation.

Eva Yerbabuena transforms fiery, passionate flamenco into an equally powerful unspoken language. Forget the clichés of fans, frills and clacking castanets. Yerbabuena is electric with emotion—stomping out monologues and mastering the moment of a long, slow burn. Recognizing the need to take the art form in exciting new directions while celebrating the flamenco tradition, Yerbabuena maintains the purity of the rhythms and lines of flamenco, while marking herself as one of the most exciting figures dancing today.

As Cuban revolutions go, it was peaceful, but its impact was mighty. For most norteamericanos, the Buena Vista Social Club seemingly came out of nowhere. But this band of Cuban legends, who had set the rhythm of Cuba’s golden era of the 1940s and 1950s, quickly established itself as irresistible, and well beyond fad and fashion. Their sound has remained utterly fresh since the release of their “debut” album in 1997. Following a series of hugely successful performances in recent years, they have come together as the 13-piece Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club featuring a number of Buena Vista Social Club alumni including trumpeter Guajiro Mirabal, laúd virtuoso Barbarito Torres, vocalist Omara Portuondo and trombonist Jesus ‘Aguaje’ Ramos.

Anush Avetisyan, soprano

Jay Campbell, cello

For young artists, competitions are an important way to build a resume and to gain wider recognition for their talent. And while Anush Avetisyan has won her share of contests (including a First Place prize in the Mondavi Center Young Artists Competition), what is most impressive about the recent UCLA graduate is her focus on sharing her gifts for good. In addition to notable appearances in the title role of Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea at UCLA and creating the role of Alice B. Toklas in the world premiere of Jonathan Sheffer’s Blood on the Dining Room Floor with text by Gertrude Stein, Avetisyan has regularly performed with the LA Opera Education and Community Programs department in an attempt to bring opera to the community. For her Mondavi Center debut, Avetisyan presents “Behind the Face,” a recital aimed at celebrating and inspiring the talent of our youth.

It is not every young cellist that collaborates with artists ranging from Elliott Carter and Pierre Boulez, to John Adams and David Lang to members of Radiohead and Einstürzende Neubauten. Then again, not every young cellist is Jay Campbell. Armed with a diverse spectrum of repertoire and eclectic musical interests, Campbell is the First Prize winner of the 2012 CAG Victor Elmaleh Competition and has been hailed by the press as an “astonishing cellist” (Seen and Heard International) and for his “electrifying” performances which “conveyed every nuance” (The New York Times). A Berkeley native and currently a student at Julliard, Campbell has appeared as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic for its Young People’s Concert Series and has worked with members of the Arditti, Takács, Kronos and Afiara string quartets.

Porgy and Bess

Samson and Delilah

George Gershwin miraculously melded classical music, popular song, jazz, blues and spirituals in this quintessentially American masterpiece that tells the poignant story of a crippled beggar, the headstrong woman he loves and the community that sustains them both. San Francisco Chronicle praised Francesca Zambello’s production as a “powerful Porgy and Bess ... persuasively led by conductor John DeMain and sung by a strong cast headed by Eric Owens and Laquita Mitchell in the title roles ... Owens brought vocal heft and dramatic sensitivity to the part of Porgy. Mitchell gave an evocative performance as Bess, compounded of tempestuous need and penitence.”

One of the most compelling Biblical tales to emerge from the Old Testament comes to life in this sweeping epic of a hero who is seduced by a woman and loses his heart, his hair and finally his strength. This riveting opera features lush music and one of the most thrilling bacchanalian dance spectacles ever conceived for the stage. Make no mistake, this production is a Cecil B. DeMille-like extravaganza. Tenor Clifton Forbis brings down the temple (and the house) in this sumptuous production featuring Russian mezzo-soprano Olga Borodina and conductor Patrick Summers.

by George Gershwin, DuBose and Dorothy Heyward and Ira Gershwin Recorded Summer 2009, 3 hours and 15 minutes. Sung in English.

Otello

by Giuseppe Verdi Recorded Fall 2009, 3 hours. Sung in Italian with English subtitles. In Verdi's masterful adaptation of Shakespeare's tragedy, a great warrior discovers the one weapon against which he has no defense—his own jealousy. South African tenor Johan Botha, “endowed with a bright, ringing sound and enough power to project effortlessly even over a full-strength orchestra” (San Francisco Chronicle), sings the title role. Bulgarian soprano Zvetelina Vassileva, in her portrayal of Desdemona, the faithful wife who finds facts are no match for manufactured suspicion, “sings with flawless, rich Italianate sound and graceful phrasing” (San Francisco Classical Voice). Italian baritone Marco Vratogna gives “an arrestingly dark and charismatic” portrait of the villain Iago, with singing that is ”beautifully controlled and dramatically on point” (San Francisco Chronicle).

Hamlet

Directed by Lawrence Olivier (1948) Not Rated; 2 hours, 35 minutes The first British film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture, Hamlet was also the first English sound film of Shakespeare’s famed drama. Controversial at the time (Olivier cut nearly two hours, including the characters of Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern, from the original play), the film remains influential, both as a model of Shakespearean adaptation and for highlighting the psychological and Oedipal overtones of the play. Olivier also won Best Actor for his portrayal of Hamlet.

Monday, November 4, 2013 7PM

This year our theme is Shakespeare, Self-Directed: three classic filmed versions of the Bard’s work, where the director

Looking For Richard

also takes a leading role in front of the camera.

Directed by Al Pacino Rated PG-13; 1 hour, 51 minutes Al Pacino presents a deeply-felt rumination on Shakespeare’s significance and relevance to the modern world through interviews and an in-depth analysis of Richard III. Interspersing rehearsal footage for the live play as well as interviews with actors and everyday citizens, the film was clearly a labor of love for Pacino, offering a refreshingly casual, unpretentious and enthusiastic approach to Shakespeare.

Monday, March 3, 2014 7PM

Henry V

Directed by Kenneth Branagh (1989) Rated PG-13; 2 hours, 17 minutes Kenneth Branagh’s astonishing feature-film directorial debut is a gritty take on one of Shakespeare’s most epic tragedies. Set during the 100 Years’ War between England and France, the action centers on Henry (Kenneth Branagh) and his efforts to conquer France, including a masterful four-minute long tracking shot after his victory at the Battle of Agincourt.

Theatre & Dance The Merchant of Venice

Written by William Shakespeare Presented by SOS (Shakespeare-on-a-Shoestring) Thursday–saturday, March 13–15, 2014 7:30PM sunday, March 16, 2014 2PM Wyatt Pavilion Theatre

Secret kisses ... stolen jewels ... betrayed fathers and unpaid debts. Described as a comedy, Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice is full of intrigue, love and courtroom drama centered on the much-maligned moneylender Shylock and the lawyer-in-disguise, Portia. Journey to Venice—and choose the right casket! This is the second production of the UC Davis Department of Theatre and Dance’s SOS (Shakespeare-on-a-Shoestring) troupe. In the manner of Shakespeare’s ‘rough magic,’ sets and costumes are at a minimum with maximum drama and audience engagement. SOS was formed in 2012 when Department of Theatre and Dance productions were threatened by financial cuts. Professor Bella Merlin then originated SOS to create more acting opportunities for dramatic art students. The SOS mission is to create immediate drama that stirs, delights and entertains through the Bard's classic works.
