14–15 Dear Friends, I am proud to present the Mondavi Center 2014–15 season to you. Our intention is to bring our region a diverse gathering of artists and thinkers from around the globe—and to treat you to evenings of grand spectacle alongside small-scale events of charm and intimacy. When you come to Jackson Hall for the U.S. premiere of Akram Khan’s iTMOi, you will be treated to an evening adventure of dance, sound, costume and scenic effects, unmatched in our area since we hosted Ballet Preljocaj’s Blanche Neige. When you join us in the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre for one of our “Visions” programs, you will be up close and personal with some of the most innovative artists working today, artists whose work reflects the spirit of discovery that we find all around us on the UC Davis campus. And throughout the season, you will find musicians immersed in our global and American heritages, the leading artists of jazz, modern dance and classical music. You will recognize many of the names in this brochure: the London Symphony Orchestra with Michael Tilson Thomas, jazz masters Delfeayo and Ellis Marsalis, Jr., the Brazilian superstar Caetano Veloso, and the classical music whirlwind Lang Lang. Others may be new to you, like The Gloaming and Tanya Tagaq—but take one of our subscription series journeys, and like many Mondavi Center regulars you may find your most rewarding experience with an artist new to you. I have tried to put a number of such wonderful but lesser known artists on your radar by marking them with the special “Director’s Choice”

symbol.

As always, I encourage you to rejoice in the familiar, to discover something new and to join us in the comfort and beauty of our Mondavi Center. I thank you in advance for taking this journey in 2014–15. Sincerely,

Don Roth, Ph.D. Executive Director

Our signature series, Western Health Advantage Orchestra represents the pinnacle of symphonic music, acclaimed soloists and rich repertoire, all performed in the rich acoustic environment of Jackson Hall.

2014–15 | Orchestra Series

Czech Philharmonic Orchestra

Orchestre de la Suisse Romande

Christian Zacharias, conductor and soloist

Jiří Bělohlávek, chief conductor and music director Jean-Yves Thibaudet, piano

Charles Dutoit, conductor Nikolai Lugansky, piano

For more than a century, the Czech Philharmonic has represented the pinnacle of Czech cultural achievement. Conducted by Antonín Dvořák in its inaugural performance, the orchestra has had a series of acclaimed conductors and music directors over the years, but the partnership between Jiří Bělohlávek and the Czech Philharmonic is among the most celebrated in the orchestra’s history. The program features works from two Czech composers, Janáček and Dvořák, and will be capped off with pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet displaying his technical and interpretive prowess in Liszt’s Second Piano Concerto.

One of today’s foremost conductors, Charles Dutoit, returns to the Mondavi Center after his stunning 11–12 season appearance with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Dutoit is a longtime champion of 20th Century composers like Bartok, Stravinsky, Ravel and Debussy. Joining Dutoit for this program is Russian pianist Nikolai Lugansky. The 40-yearold virtuoso, who has earned critical acclaim for performing Rachmaninoff ’s great Paganini Rhapsody under Dutoit’s baton in Philadelphia, Boston, New York and Chicago, will be tackling Rachmaninov in this performance. A pianist of extraordinary depth and versatility, Lugansky has been described as “riveting” by London’s Telegraph.

One of the pleasures of a Mondavi Center season is the return of the San Francisco Symphony. This program is a stirring reminder of this premier orchestra’s range. Copland’s joyous Appalachian Spring, for which the composer won a Pulitzer Prize, is one of the most beloved pieces in the American repertoire. Foremost Mozart interpreter Christian Zacharias conducts the Piano Concerto No. 20 from the keyboard and Haydn’s Symphony No. 93 from the podium in this concert, which also includes the slender, lovely Morton Feldman elegy for his piano teacher, Madame Press Died Last Week at Ninety.

Widely regarded as one of the world’s leading orchestras, the London Symphony Orchestra makes its Jackson Hall premiere. This international debut also marks a warm return for Michael Tilson Thomas as conductor and brilliant pianist Yuja Wang. Thomas and Wang will be familiar partners to Mondavi Center orchestra fans—their previous performance together with the San Francisco Symphony in May 2009 was a stunning reading of Prokofiev’s Second Piano Concerto. Music director and conductor Myung-Whun Chung has directed the SPO since 2005, urging the organization forward with compelling programming, from Mozart to Messiaen, and far-reaching initiatives that take classical music into schools and the community. Curtis Chamber Orchestra Robert Spano, conductor Roberto Díaz, viola

Add-On: Orchestra

The Curtis Institute of Music educates and trains exceptionally gifted young musicians for careers as performing artists on the highest professional level. This unique professional training (and the full tuition scholarships provided to all of its students) has enabled Curtis alumni like Lang Lang, Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein and others to assume prominent positions in America’s leading orchestras as well as ensembles around the world. One of the fruits of the focus on performance is the Curtis Chamber Orchestra. Already a fixture in Curtis’s home town, Philadelphia, the ensemble draws its members from the Curtis Symphony Orchestra, which has been praised for its “otherworldly ensemble and professional level of sophistication” (The New York Times). Conductor Robert Spano leads the ensemble in a program that includes masterpieces by Mozart and Prokofiev, a new viola concerto by Curtis alumnus and Pulitzer Prize winner Jennifer Higdon, performed by soloist (and Curtis president) Roberto Díaz; and a new vocal composition by Spano.

UC Davis Symphony Orchestra,

American tenor Brian Jagde, the featured singer in our 2013 Rising Stars of Opera performance, is emerging as one of the top lyric tenors to watch. In the San Francisco Classical Voice’s words: “Jagde supplied what so many other tenors on today’s main stage lack: soul ... Jagde made me believe in his singing.” He recently made his debuts at the Metropolitan Opera (as Count Elemer in Arabella) and at Opéra de Limoges (as Don José in Carmen). The former Adler Fellow returns to the San Francisco Opera in the summer of 2014 as Cavardossi in Tosca.

In the spring of 1986, four women got together to hear what medieval chant and polyphony would sound like when sung by female voices. 25 albums—and scores of accolades— later, this remarkable group has become a fixture on concert stages around the world. For this special date, Anonymous 4 joins renowned singer and multi-instrumentalist Bruce Molsky to perform their newest project, 1865. Using songs originally written for the stage and for the parlor, and in songs and instrumental tunes from the hills and back roads of America, 1865 commemorates the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War by focusing on the personal experiences of men, women and children from the North and the South who had sacrificed love and life upon the altar of freedom.

Itzhak Perlman enjoys superstar status rarely afforded a classical musician. Beloved for his talent, charm and humanitarian efforts, he is treasured by audiences throughout the world. Communicating an irrepressible joy for making music, the violin virtuoso is one of the most in demand artists in music. His sold-out performances at the Mondavi Center have been delighting local audiences for more than a decade. Classical music’s most prominent ambassador, Perlman has been granted a Kennedy Center Honor, a National Medal of Arts, and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Concert con’t

The Academy of Ancient Music explores the original intentions of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Orchestral Suites using the expressive power of period instruments—flutes made of wood, trumpets without valves, strings woven from animal gut. But for all its authenticity, the Academy is hardly old-fashioned; in fact, The Independent hails them as “the ultimate raspberry to anyone who thinks baroque music is predictable.” In this program, music director Richard Egarr takes the audience on a guided journey through these four masterpieces of melody, harmony and orchestration, rediscovering vital sounds that have not been heard for hundreds of years.

Concert Lang Lang, piano

Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble

Since a young age, Lang Lang has delighted and inspired audiences with his extraordinary musical talent and ebullient personality. The first Chinese pianist to be engaged by the Vienna Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic and all the top American orchestras, Lang Lang certainly qualifies for consideration as the “hottest artist on the classical music planet” (The New York Times). He returns to the Mondavi Center following his sold out performance in 2012, to share more of his brilliant musicianship.

Following a sold-out Jackson Hall performance of the full orchestra, the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields returns with its renowned Chamber Ensemble. With more than 500 recordings to date and more than a dozen gold discs on the Billboard Classical Chart, the Academy is one of the most-recorded and best-selling classical groups in the world, renowned for its polished and refined sound, rooted in outstanding musicianship. The wide-ranging program includes Mendelssohn’s Octet in E-flat Major, Op. 20. Scored in 1825 when the composer was 16, the work was a birthday gift for his violin teacher.

50th Anniversary of Alice’s Restaurant

Widely recognized as the finest jazz violinist working today, Regina Carter has taken her fans on a fascinating musical journey over the past 25 years. The former MacArthur Fellow has charted a highly personal course through multiple musical landscapes, from tributes to her mother, her hometown of Detroit and Niccolo Paganini, to 2010’s Reverse Thread, a contemporary celebration of traditional African music. The next step in her musical odyssey, Southern Comfort, explores the folk songs and spirituals her paternal grandfather, a coal miner, would have heard as he toiled in Alabama.

Arlo Guthrie returns to the Mondavi Center just in time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the event that spurred his landmark musical monologue “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree.” A beloved 1960s counterculture singer-songwriter and social commentator, Guthrie brings his singular voice to the stage at Jackson Hall to tell his timeless stories and sing his unforgettable classic tunes—with a rare chance to hear the current iteration of “Alice’s Restaurant,” his always expanding, extended musical monologue that galvanized a generation.

“Equal parts heart and humor” —The Washington Post

Three Acts, Two Dancers, One Radio Host

With a repertoire ranging from Robert Johnson to the Sex Pistols, The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain tackles an ambitious range of music—on just four strings. The singing Ukulele players believe that all genres of music are available for reinterpretation, as long as they are played on the ukulele. When all you have to defend yourself is a “bonsai guitar,” the Ukes’ preferred putdown for their chosen instrument, it helps to have a sense of humor. Renowned for its “perfectly polished professionalism, threaded through with dry wit and wry humor” (The Independent), the ensemble wields the limitations of the instrument with virtuosic expertise.

This show has legs. This American Life host Ira Glass has joined forces with choreographer/dancer Monica Bill Barnes & dancer Anna Bass to combine two art forms, radio storytelling and dance, that—as Glass puts it—“have no business being together.” It is an evening of storytelling that The Washington Post calls “equal parts heart and humor.” Glass delivers his trademark narratives, and dancers Barnes and Bass (whom The Washington Post calls “the Tina Fey of dance” ) evoke characters through movement. The Hot Sardines

A powerful punch of fun!

With a salty stride piano, blustery brass lineup, French-born singer and fast-tapping percussion, the band’s sound is French hot jazz meets New Orleans brass. The Sardines make the kind of music Louis Armstrong, Django Reinhardt and Fats Waller used to make: straight-up, footstomping jazz with live performances that pack a powerful punch of fun. Sultry standards from the 20s, 30s and 40s come alive with a vibrancy that captivates and lingers long after the show is over.

Nominated twice for a Latin Grammy, Sol De Mexico has broken countless cultural barriers in the United States, Mexico and the world. For this familyfriendly holiday concert, expect the pageantry of a Mexican Christmas, with familiar songs sung in both Spanish and English.

Wendy Whelan

iTMOi

Restless Creature

More than 100 years ago, Russian composer Igor Stravinsky famously debuted The Rite of Spring before a Parisian audience, an event that ended in violent mayhem and scandal. In this remarkable piece of dance theater Akram Khan investigates this iconoclastic milestone that shattered the comforts of traditional “pretty” composition. iTMOi (In The Mind Of Igor) continues the Company custom of challenging conventional dance compositions and, in that sense, extends the exploration of evoking emotions through patterns rather than through expression “using Stravinsky as the key, the guide, the map.”

Long acclaimed for her interpretations of Balanchine and Robbins, former New York City Ballet principal Wendy Whelan is simply too talented to be defined by the work of one choreographer. In the kickoff project of her New Works Initiative, Whelan will dance in a contemporary suite of duets with four rising choreographers. Set to music ranging from Max Richter and Philip Glass to Hauschka and Hilder Guðnadóttir, Whelan dances with contemporary artists Kyle Abraham, Josh Beamish, Brian Brooks and Alejandro Cerrudo. The New York Times writes, “It’s hard to think of another woman who could dance these pieces, by four different choreographers, half so strikingly. Everything about her is riveting, interesting, unusual, intelligent.”

This program contains nudity and adult themes.

Lara Downes, piano Zuill Bailey, cello Some Other Time

Lara Downes and Zuill Bailey chose Leonard Bernstein’s Some Other Time as the title track of their first recording together because “it represents three central qualities that inspired this project: friendship, adventure and nostalgia.” Bernstein, Barber, Copland and Foss, who all wrote in the 1920s–40s, shared deep friendships during those action and adventure-packed decades. The music they composed created new possibilities for an American sound. Downes and Bailey, who first came together as musical partners over Barber’s Sonata for Cello and Piano in 2009, bring the luster of the past and nostalgic longing of the present to these timeless American classics arranged for cello and piano.

He continues to set remarkably high standards as a singer, songwriter and performer, releasing a string of albums on Nonesuch records that incorporate elements of rock, reggae, fado, tango, samba canao, baiao and rap. Brad Mehldau Trio

Director’s Choice

“One of the most consistently fascinating voices in current jazz” (JazzTimes), pianist and composer Brad Mehldau is an intensely expressive improviser and ambitious and adventurous composer. (For further proof of the latter, see Jeremy Denk’s recital on page 13, where he will perform a stunning new Mehldau piece.) For the past two decades, Mehldau has shined brightest when masterfully stretching, freeing and refining the collective creative possibilities of the trio format. His celebrated group features two responsive and equally brilliant sidemen—bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Ballard.

A recent Grammy win for Best Vocal Jazz Album (Liquid Spirit) only confirmed what has been obvious for some time: Gregory Porter’s time has come. As remarkable as his rich baritone voice is, it is his gift for songwriting that truly sets him apart. A natural storyteller, he redefines the emotional tenor of what jazz singing can be, weaving elements of folk, R&B and soul into melodies that seem fresh and timeless at the same time. In his Grammy acceptance speech, Porter recalled the advice of his mother as he considered a career as a singer: “Sing with an understanding.” Like all good sons, he did well to listen, and we all share in the remarkable results.

The Washington Post says Cyrille Aimée has “a voice like fine whiskey—oaky and smooth, with a hint of smokiness.” Winner of the Montreux Jazz Festival’s International Vocal Competition, the French/Dominican Chanteuse was raised in the village where legendary gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt once lived, and it shows. In this program she pays tribute to that legacy, leading two guitarists through a musical vision that combines gypsy, jazz and Brazilian influences to mesmerizing effect.

A piano prodigy from the age of six, Billy Childs has forged a remarkable career that combines engaging work as a composer and steady gigs as a bandleader. Awards and accolades have followed him at every step, including three Grammys, a Guggenheim Fellowship (for his compositions and arrangements) and the Doris Duke Performing Artist Award. And he also keeps good company on the bandstand, with notable collaborators including Yo-Yo Ma, Sting, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Jack DeJohnette and Wynton Marsalis. For this Studio Jazz run, he leads a quartet that includes drummer Eric Harland, a Mondavi Center favorite.

Powerhouse saxophonist Donny McCaslin pairs his trademark hard-charging sound with lurching dub rhythms, swirling electronica-inspired atmospheres, funk-inflected electrified elements and arena-rock power. McCaslin, who has worked with luminaries like Gary Burton and Dave Douglas, fuses a wealth of cutting-edge influences into a single visionary voice. From angular tunes to lyrical ballads he continues his exploration of all facets of modern jazz sounds. His latest release Casting for Gravity follows on the heels of 2011’s highly acclaimed Perpetual Motion.

Director’s Choice A Celebration of Harold Pinter Directed by John Malkovich Actor Julian Sands is best known for a film career that includes A Room with a View. But early on in his career, he was “apprenticed” by Harold Pinter. The Nobel Prize-winning playwright and poet spent hours with the actor on how his work should be delivered. Every pause. Every nuance in tone. This extraordinary collaboration became the foundation for this rich, humorous solo show, which will be presented on stage in Jackson Hall. Directed by John Malkovich, this celebration brings Pinter—the man—to life through a halfcentury of his poetry and prose.

MOZART TRANSCENDENT

In 1781, the 25 year-old Wolfgang Mozart moved to Vienna, there to freelance and make his fame and fortune in the capital city of German music. In the ten years that followed, until his death in 1791, he composed more masterworks in more genres than any other composer before or since. The tragedy of Mozart’s early death is compounded by the fact that during the last years of his life, his music acquired an entirely new level of intensity: polyphony intensity; developmental intensity; and waste-not-a-single note expressive intensity. And while we cannot know where Mozart’s muse might have taken him had he lived a longer life, we do know that the late quartets and quintets in this series stand as pre-eminent examples of his mature—and transcendent—musical voice.

UC Davis Theatre & Dance

Fall 2014 Granada Artist-in-Residence is Fidelis Morgan who will direct the Restoration comedy The Gambling Lady (Susanna Centlivre’s The Basset Table), which features Lady Reveller presiding over her gaming table, where classes cross and the stakes are high, and she can deflect the attention of her suitor.

Winter 2015 Granada Artist-in-Residence Bob McGrath will direct a free adaptation of Büchner’s Woyzeck by Neil Labute (author of In the Company of Men and The Shape of Things). Woyzeck, considered by some the first truly modern drama, concerns the dehumanizing effects of doctors and the military on a young man’s life and has continued to fascinate 20th and 21st century composers and playwrights since its re-discovery. Bob McGrath is the co-founder and Artistic Director of Ridge Theater in New York. He has directed theater and opera at venues including the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Lincoln Center, The American Repertory Theater, Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall, Vineyard Theater, La MaMa E.T.C., and Arts at St. Ann’s. He has collaborated with renowned composers and writers and is the recipient of three OBIE awards.

Look for announcements about our Spring Granada Artist-in-Residence. The 2014-15 Department of Theatre and Dance season of also offers many unique student driven productions in the spring including Mainstage Dance, which premieres original work by student choreographers, and our MFA Exploratory Showcase, in which graduating students share their work. We also curate a number of events through ITDP, our institute that invites applications from across campus to investigate various research questions through the medium of performance, often in the framework of a workshop or laboratory context. Past ITDP events include stilt-walking migrations, choreographic explorations of space, and original dramatic work stemming from classroom experiments.

A special opportunity to work closely with major theater and dance practitioners, it is a unique experience for students and artists alike.
