“ART ASKS US TO DO ALL THE THINGS THAT LEAD TO INNOVATION.” —Yo-Yo Ma
Cover image of Cécile McLorin Salvant by JP Dodel Photography
t is my pleasure to introduce you to our 14th Mondavi Center season. The performing arts are an integral element on a university campus and in a community, and we are proud to serve as the regional home for some of the finest artists working today. In 2015–16, a number of themes are worth highlighting. A bounty of female vocalists will take the stage this year, headlined by a rare recital from soprano Renée Fleming, in only her second appearance at the Center. Cécile McLorin Salvant brings a timeless approach to jazz singing. And our American Heritage series features three female-driven shows: Lisa Fischer, a late-career superstar whose remarkable voice has backed up the Rolling Stones and Sting; the soulful pairing of Mavis Staples and Joan Osborne; and the equally impressive folk-trio of Patty Griffin, Sara Watkins and Anaïs Mitchell. Last year, we took a break from our film series. Our patience was rewarded this year with four screenings of classic films, all accompanied by live music. Organist Cameron Carpenter will infuse The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari with appropriate menace; perhaps the most emotionally intense silent film ever made, La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc, accompanied by 15th century vocal music from The Orlando Consort; the effervescent hot jazz score to the equally delightful animated French film The Triplets of Belleville; and, finally, Steven Spielberg’s E.T., with John Williams’ Academy Award-winning score performed by the San Francisco Symphony. Finally, you will find my Director’s Choice shows throughout the book, marked with . These are performers that are, perhaps, not on your radar but truly should be. Year after year, our most enthusiastic audience compliments come from shows like these, that have the capacity to surprise. As you look through the brochure, there are many more discoveries to be made. I encourage you to take your time and learn more about all these accomplished, fascinating artists. Think about picking two or three unfamiliar to you to sample during the season ahead. You will be glad you did. Enjoy the season,
Don

Celebrating two centuries of music-making, the Handel + Haydn Society returns to the Mondavi Center with a program of notable works from the Baroque canon, many of which were new to American audiences when the Boston-based ensemble first performed them: Handel’s Messiah and The Creation both premiered on Christmas Day in 1818. Led by Artistic Director Harry Christophers, the 100+ member ensemble, which includes the 50+ member chorus, retains their commitment to their origins by performing repertoire significant to their history. Aisslinn Nosky, H+H’s dynamic concertmaster, leads the ensemble in the Vivaldi pieces including a concerto from his “L’estro armonico” (The Genius of Harmony).
Last season marked Michael Tilson Thomas’ 20th anniversary with the San Francisco Symphony, making him the longest-tenured music director of any major American orchestra. This season they are joined by violinist Leonidas Kavakos who returns to Jackson Hall after appearances in 2005 and 2007, with the Kirov Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre and Cincinnati Orchestra, respectively. On the program are two works by Jean Sibelius: a tone poem celebrating the forest spirit inhabiting the composer’s native Finnish woods; and the only concerto written by the composer, virtually unknown until 1991, when Sibelius’ heirs allowed one live performance and one recording of the work—both performed by Kavakos.

In his seventh season as Principal Guest Conductor, iconic violinist and conductor Pinchas Zukerman leads the London-based Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in a program infused with imagery and lyricism. Maestro Zukerman, the “forever-young virtuoso” (Los Angeles Times), showcases his signature magnetism as soloist in Mozart’s fifth (and final) violin concerto, known as the “Turkish” concerto due to its exotic finale. Dvořák’s idyllic Serenade for Strings, with its sense of immediacy, and Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 (deemed “an inexhaustible fountain of deep pleasure” by Austrian critic Eduard Hanslick, a Brahms contemporary) round out this richly layered program.

Founded in 1990 by pianist and conductor Mikhail Pletnev, the RNO is unique among the principal Russian ensembles as it is the first independent orchestra in Russia, receiving support from individuals and organizations around the world. Maestro Pletnev, a finalist for the 2015 BBC Music Magazine Awards, takes up the baton for a program of works from Schumann’s only opera, Tchaikovsky’s iconic ballet, and Mozart’s concerto written for a young French keyboard player known only as “Jeunehomme.” The concerto she inspired suggests her talents must have been considerable. Brilliant pianist Yuja Wang returns to the Jackson Hall stage—previous Mondavi Center appearances were with the Shanghai, San Francisco and London symphony orchestras—bringing her “impressive virtuosity and poise” (The Boston Globe).

The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra is known almost as much for its innovative structure as it is for its award-winning music making: the ensemble rotates musical leadership for each work, placing democracy at the center of artistic expression. That celebrated artistry is on full display with this thoughtfully curated program. Handel’s spirited Concerto Grosso builds upon the theme of collaboration with its Baroque-style call and response between soloists and the full orchestra. Stravinsky’s Divertimento was composed as an homage to Tchaikovsky. Soloist Augustin Hadelich, who last appeared in Jackson Hall with the San Francisco Symphony, is celebrated for his phenomenal technique and poetic sensitivity, “reveling in the myriad ways of making a phrase come alive on the violin” (Washington Post).

Soprano Renée Fleming, known as “the people’s diva,” has done more to elevate the artistry of classical voice than any other American artist. In 2013, she received the National Medal of Arts from President Obama—the highest honor awarded to an individual artist in the U.S.—as well as a Best Classical Vocal Solo Grammy (her fourth) for Poémes, an intimate collection of 20th-century French music. In 2014, she performed the title role in Dvořák’s Rusalka at the Metropolitan Opera as well as hosting duties for The Met’s Live in HD series. As the first creative consultant for Chicago Lyric Opera, she has brought energy to the storied organization’s audience engagement efforts, and has helped curate the world premiere of Bel Canto, based on Ann Patchett’s novel, in 2015. She also became the first classical artist to perform the National Anthem at the Super Bowl, bringing her artistry to a vast new audience.

She walked away with first place in the jazz world’s most prestigious contest. The buzz began almost immediately, and has continued through her recent Grammy nomination for her debut U.S. album WomanChild. “She radiates authority,” critic Ben Ratliff wrote in The New York Times in response to one of her post-competition performances, and a few weeks later his colleague Stephen Holden announced that “McLorin Salvant has it all ... Grammy award-winning composer and producer Ryan Truesdell relied upon his diverse musical tastes and influences (as well as a healthy reverence for jazz tradition) for his most recent vision-come-to-life: Centennial, the highly anticipated Gil Evans Project. Truesdell’s vision was to bring to light some of the lesser-known works of Gil Evans, the celebrated mid-century jazz pianist, composer, bandleader and frequent collaborator with Miles Davis (Sketches of Spain and Miles Ahead). Truesdell discovered more than 40 works of Evans’ from the 1940s through the 1980s that were never before recorded or released. The resulting record garnered three Grammy nominations, winning one. Truesdell leads his 22-piece band in the live performance of the project.

“MAVIS STAPLES WILL UNDOUBTEDLY GO DOWN IN HISTORY AS ONE OF THE GREATEST GOSPEL SINGERS OF ALL TIME.” —The Current
Mavis Staples and Joan Osborne One’s a little bit gospel; the other’s a little bit rock and roll. But Mavis Staples and Joan Osborne share some important common ground: they’re both exceptional singers with a deep respect for soul, blues and R&B, and a determination to stay true to their respective artistic muses, wherever that might take their careers. Staples is a living legend, a Rock and Roll hall of famer whose commanding voice has moved listeners for decades. Osborne is a multi-platinum selling singer-songwriter, and a high-energy performer with an infectious spirit. Backed by Staples' exemplary band, the two singers will take the stage individually and together to raise the roof and deliver a master class in song.
No longer just another band from East L.A., Los Lobos is one of America's finest rock bands, and has been for more than 30 years. Whether playing straight-ahead roots rock, traditional Mexican cumbias or pushing into psychedelia, the band has remained consistently soulful, authentic and compelling. Whatever their stylistic forays, it is the live experience that is the true essence of Los Lobos. The twin guitars of Cesar Rojas and David Hidalgo, plus the latter’s remarkable voice, create musical magic. Opening act Alejandro Escovedo is one of of the leading lights in his home base of Austin, Texas. He is a singer-songwriter and performer who has moved through punk rock, country and Americana to forge his own distinctive voice.

Since childhood, Julian Lage has been highly regarded in jazz and new music circles for his own work as well as for his collaborations with such artists as Gary Burton, Nels Cline, Fred Hersch, and Jim Hall, among many others. Chris Eldridge is equally noted in the progressive bluegrass world for his stints with the Seldom Scene and the Infamous Stringdusters, which led to his joining Chris Thile’s adventurous, Grammy-nominated quintet, Punch Brothers. For this duo performance, the two will celebrate their passion for acoustic music with a setlist that draws on their recordings Avalon and Close to Picture, celebrating the breadth of the American songbook as Lage and Eldridge see it, incorporating bluegrass, country, gospel, old-time music and jazz.

Known for condensing classic tales into irreverent, side-splitting performances, the Reduced Shakespeare Company tells the story of Christmahanukwanzakah from the trio of “Three Wise Guys.” The story begins with the trio arriving at St. Everybody’s Non-Denominational Universalist Church for the annual variety show, only to learn none of the performers are there, and they’ll have to carry out the entire show by themselves. Irreverent yet heartwarming, the show pays delightful tribute to everyone’s favorite holiday traditions—joyful songs, Christmas pageantry, and familial dysfunction— through hilarious physical theater.

Countless pieces of music, from grand operas to country ballads, have been inspired by the folly of love. Love that goes to our heads, gets under our skin, bewitches, bothers, bewilders... Pianist Lara Downes has curated a program of piano masterpieces inspired by romantic dramas from Romeo and Juliet to Robert and Clara Schumann, and featuring the West Coast premiere of Mad Love, a new work by composer Daniel Felsenfeld riffing on iconic rock and pop songs inspired by this crazy kind of love.

Haunt of Last Nightfall and Wild Sound
Two to Tango
Chicago-based Third Coast Percussion explores the extraordinary sonic possibilities of the percussion repertoire in concerts and recordings that meld the energy of rock music with the precision and nuance of classical chamber works. In its first visit to the Mondavi Center, the ensemble presents two distinct programs: Haunt of Last Nightfall, a politically inspired program, including John Cage’s satirical Credo in US and other works; Frederic Rzewski’s Coming Together and the title piece by David T. Little, which blends recorded heavy metal sounds with live percussion; and Wilco drummer and composer Glenn Kotche’s Wild Sound, which combines field recordings from cities around the world, live performance, and the construction and destruction of musical instruments on stage.
After the success of their Los Tangeros tour, Pablo Ziegler and Christopher O’Riley come together again for Two to Tango, an adventurous program featuring virtuosic two-piano arrangements of compositions of their own and by Astor Piazzolla. Buenos Aires-born, Latin Grammy-winning pianist, composer and arranger Ziegler is one of the most important figures in Argentine nuevo tango, the vibrant musical hybrid of classic tango and American jazz. O’Riley, the host of NPR’s classical music program From the Top (which will host a taping at the Mondavi Center on March 18), has stretched the piano beyond conventional boundaries with groundbreaking transcriptions of Radiohead, Elliott Smith and Nick Drake, and his sublime interpretations of the classical canon.

Adios Tour featuring Omara Portuondo, Eliades Ochoa, Guajiro Mirabal, Jesús “Aguaje” Ramos and Barbarito Torres In his novel Fury, Salman Rushdie refers to the long, hot days of New York in 1998 as “that Buena Vista summer. ” That summer was when Buena Vista Social Club’s self-titled album took off and threaded its romantic impulses and uninhibited exuberance into the daily lives of millions of music lovers. Now Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club says “adios” to audiences around the world with their farewell tour, which will end, fittingly, in Havana in the fall of 2015. At the forefront of the group are original band members who will be fondly recognized from the Buena Vista Social Club film: bandleader and trombonist Jesús “Aguaje” Ramos, trumpeter Guajiro Mirabal, laúd virtuoso Barbarito Torres, vocalist and guitarist Eliades Ochoa and the incomparable vocalist Omara Portuondo.

The Passion of Joan of Arc
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
Carl Theodor Dreyer’s acclaimed silent film La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc (1928) is recognized as one of the finest films ever made. The film, famous for its vivid close ups of actress Renée Jeanne Falconetti and stark realism, depicts the trial and execution of Joan of Arc, that great French warrior, who was burned at the stake in 1431 and ultimately canonized. The acclaimed British a cappella group, The Orlando Consort, has assembled a soundtrack of vocal music that comes from the period of St. Joan’s brief life, providing a perfect setting for this masterpiece of cinema.
Virtuoso organist Cameron Carpenter brings his effortless technique and musical imagination to bear in a short recital program followed by a live improvised scoring of 1920 silent horror film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Thought to be the first true horror film (and with a twist ending, no less), Caligari provides a perfectly macabre inspiration for Carpenter’s wicked musical gift. Carpenter’s second performance at the Mondavi Center also marks the long-anticipated debut of the portable, digital International Touring Organ. Built by digital organ wizards Marshall & Ogletree of Needham, MA, Carpenter spent the last decade designing the instrument to allow him to take his talents (and sound) to any venue in the world.

“ZADIE SMITH IS NOT MERELY ONE OF BRITAIN’S FINEST YOUNGER WRITERS, BUT ALSO ONE OF THE ENGLISH-SPEAKING WORLD’S BEST CHRONICLERS OF RACE, CLASS AND IDENTITY IN URBAN CONFINES.” —The Philadelphia Inquirer
Zadie Smith >
15–16 | Speakers Series
Only a handful of writers have enjoyed the instantaneous success of Zadie Smith. Even fewer have prolonged that early praise into a sustained career of literary excellence. Smith’s debut novel, White Teeth (2000), was a sensation, pulling in critical acclaim and awards by the dozens. Since her debut, Smith has released three more acclaimed novels, most recently NW (2012), as well as two works of non-fiction. Twice named on Granta’s “Best of Young British Novelists” list (2003 and 2013) she has built a substantial career as one of the finest novelists writing today, while maintaining a tenured position as a professor of creative writing at New York University.
Odd couple FBI agents investigating the paranormal. A mild-mannered high school chemistry teacher turned “bad.” A hard-working lawyer trying to find his niche. These iconic characters represent some of the very best writing in television and we have Vince Gilligan to thank. The multiple award-winning creator, writer and executive producer of both The X-Files and Breaking Bad (and its prequel Better Call Saul) has garnered two Emmys (for Breaking Bad) as well as a 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, among others. Of Gilligan’s characters, The New York Times has said “they inhabit a realm of moral ambiguities that’s overseen by a man with both a wicked sense of humor and a highly refined sense of right and wrong.”

Binge-worthy journalism: Backstage with the creators of Serial
An Evening of Poetry, Acoustic Music and Conversation
Co-created by veteran radio journalists and producers Sarah Koenig and Julie Snyder, Serial rapidly became the most popular podcast in the world. At a time when being first and being fast dominates the media, Serial did exactly the opposite: in Season One, it presented a 12-part series centering on one legal case, taking its time and proving that slow-motion journalism could captivate and sustain listeners. In their live presentation Koenig and Snyder will take the audience backstage in the creation of this cultural phenomenon. Using some of their favorite episode segments, they’ll tell personal behind-the-scenes stories, explain how they constructed certain episodes and allow the audience to follow the ups and downs of creating a new form of modern journalism.
Former U.S. poet laureate Billy Collins and singer-songwriter Aimee Mann met in 2011 at a Poetry Night event at the White House. From that initial encounter grew an idea to take their respective shows on the road, a wise decision that resulted in this unique onstage pairing. What to expect? Collins will read some of his poems, which are full of wit and thoughtfulness; Mann will sing some songs from her quirky, tuneful catalogue (accompanied by Paul Bryan). The two will discuss each others’ work, offer insights into the differences and similarities between writing poetry and lyrics and their creative processes. In all, a volley of poetry, music and commentary on both that will leave audiences enchanted.

As the founding artistic director of Shakespeare & Company, actor and playwright Tina Packer has spent more than 40 years immersed in the world of the Bard. Part performance, part lecture, Women of Will takes a fierce, playful look at Shakespeare’s most powerful heroines, deconstructing the famous female characters through explorative themes of love, loss, freedom, control, violence and power. With ace actor Nigel Gore as the Romeo to Packer’s Juliet, the duo creates a unique Shakespeare experience that is at once funny, fierce and accessible.

2015–16 | Alexander String Quartet Series
Beethoven: Before, During and After
Bad hair, bad temper and bad attitude: Beethoven, the bad boy from Bonn changed the very way we listen to, think and talk about music. Like him or not, every composer since Beethoven has had to deal, somehow, with his compositional and expressive innovations. This series features four works by Beethoven; a string quartet that profoundly influenced Beethoven, Mozart’s String Quartet No. 18 in A Major, K. 464; and two works powerfully influenced by Beethoven. Along the way the Alexander String Quartet will be joined by the legendary pianist Roger Woodward in a rare performance of Beethoven’s Piano Quartet No. 3 in C Major and my own composition, a quintet for piano and strings, Invasive Species.
—Robert Greenberg
Robert Greenberg (2PM performances only)
Robert Greenberg, Ph.D. is music historian-in-residence with San Francisco Performances. A graduate of Princeton University, Greenberg holds a Ph.D. in music composition from the University of California, Berkeley and has seen his compositions—which include more than 45 works for a wide variety of instrumental and vocal ensembles—performed all over the world.
The Alexander String Quartet is a major artistic presence in its home base of San Francisco, and is equally beloved in its second home: the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre. The group returns for its 14th consecutive year on the Mondavi Center season to perform an innovative Beethoven-themed series touching upon the influences leading to the composer’s work, and those works he went on to influence.

The Aizuri Quartet is currently the String Quartet-in-Residence at the Curtis Institute of Music. Joining the quartet is acclaimed clarinetist Michael Rusinek, a faculty member at Curtis and Carnegie Mellon University. Known as the ‘Stadler’ quintet, Mozart’s Quintet in A Major was composed around the same time as his famed opera, Così fan tutte and shares much of its warmth. Sibelius’ “Intimate Voices” is an introspective work creating an ethereal, almost mysterious atmosphere.
