Alexander String Quartet & Robert Greenberg A Tribute Zakarias Grafilo, violin Frederick Lifsitz, violin Paul Yarbrough, viola Sandy Wilson, cello Robert Greenberg, Ph.D., historian, composer, pianist, speaker, author
A whole world contained in four stringed instruments. A source of joy, passion and sorrow, and a repertoire ranging from Mozart to Shostakovich, from Beethoven to Bartok. In every season of the Mondavi Center’s history, we have had the privilege of exploring this musical world, the world of the string quartet, with our great partners, the Alexander String Quartet. Zak, Fred, Paul and Sandy as we familiarly know them, play these works with verve, commitment, depth and energy, and we have surveyed with them almost every corner of the great quartet repertoire. No other ensemble has performed in every Mondavi Center season, and no one has developed a more loyal and much-deserved following. Complementing the ASQ’s musical talent, Robert Greenberg regularly has brought each of us a greater understanding of the works being played, with his characteristic wit, humor and deep engagement with the music. Well known internationally for his lectures, as well as his own compositions, Greenberg has been a Sunday afternoon mainstay every time the Alexanders come to town. Their own partnership and give-and-take always brings lightness, even on afternoons when solemnity emanates from the Quartet’s instruments. We are delighted to honor our great friends and colleagues, the Alexander String Quartet and Dr. Robert Greenberg, with the first Mondavi Center award.
