Mondavi Center’s Young Artists Competition Expands Reach and Prizes DAVIS, CALIF.—The Young Artists Competition, held annually at the Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, UC Davis, will increase its national reach and funding for the 2012–13 season. This year the competition will hold regional auditions in Portland, New York City, Los Angeles and Davis, Calif. In addition, the grand prize award has been increased to $6,000. ―In the past seven years, the competition has grown and expanded to welcome young artists from across the U.S.,‖ said Lara Downes, director of the Young Artists Competition. ―This year, we are excited to further broaden the competition's reach by holding regional auditions on both coasts, allowing even more gifted young musicians from outside California to benefit from this prestigious opportunity.‖ The Young Artists Competition gives developing musicians an opportunity to receive exposure and performance experience. Applicants will compete in one of two divisions: the Young Artist Division for pianists and instrumentalists ages 10–16 and the Founder’s Division for vocalists ages 17–21. The application deadline for both divisions is August 31, 2012. Potential competitors must submit the downloadable application form, a video or audio audition and the other materials listed on the form (more information is available at www.mondaviarts.org/youngartists/). Last year’s competition received submissions from more than 200 musicians from around the nation. Selected applicants will be invited to attend regional auditions this fall. These auditions will be held on September 29 at Sherman Clay in Portland, Oregon, October 13, 2012 at Steinway Hall in New York City, October 28 at the Mondavi Center in Davis and November 15 at the Colburn School in Los Angeles. Finalists will compete at the Mondavi Center on Saturday, March 2, 2013, and the winners will be showcased in the Young Artist Competition Winners Concert at the Mondavi Center on March 3 at 2 p.m. Tickets for the concert go on sale to the public August 10, 2012.
