With generous support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Mondavi Center launched the Aggie Arts program in 2011. Aggie Arts is a 3-quarter learning laboratory for UC Davis students interested in a career in arts administration. The students work with the Mondavi Center staff to gain hands-on experience with different arts presenting fundamentals: programming, arts education, marketing and development. In addition, members of the Aggie Arts program serve as a student advisory board and provide insight in developing and implementing student-specific incentive programs, events and marketing.

Hauschka is the stage name of Volker Bertelmann, a Dusseldorf-based pianist and composer from Kreuztal Nordrheinwestfalen, Germany. He began classical lessons at age 9 and composed his first film music at age 18 for a German crime series. He founded the annual Approximation Piano Festival in Düsseldorf in 2005, featuring an international program of experimental artists and collaborations. He is best known for his use of the prepared piano, an instrument that has its sound altered by placing different objects between or on the strings, or on the hammers and dampers.

Sam Nichols is a composer and lecturer in the UC Davis Department of PROGRAM NOTES Noise Is Music (2012) The Avant/Garde Diaries As part of The Avant/Garde Diaries series, Hauschka speaks about his experience as an experimental pianist, providing a look into his prepared piano techniques. He discusses John Cage’s influence in his work and the elements he incorporates in his distinct compositions. Portrait of the Artist (2013) Sam Nichols This composition, commissioned by the Mondavi Center, was inspired by Robert Arneson’s “Stargazer” sculpture on the UC Davis campus. This trio captures some of the playfulness of Arneson’s sculpture, creating a fragment of a self-portrait. Selections from Hauschka Hauschka has released ten albums utilizing the prepared piano in different styles. Selections will be announced from the stage.

Music; he also teaches in collaboration with the Cinema and Technocultural Studies program. He has received commissions from several organizations, including the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble, the Empyrean Ensemble, and the Composers Conference at Wellesley College. In 2011, he received the UC Davis Academic Federation Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Eric Zivian (pianist) has receive graduate degrees from the Juilliard School and the Yale School of Music. He is a member of the Zivian-Tomkins Duo, a fortepiano-cello duo that has performed throughout the United States, and the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble, which performs contemporary music in San Francisco.

Cathie Apple (piccoloist) is one of the founders of Citywater new music ensemble. An avid supporter of new music, she has commissioned and premiered many works for flute and various chamber ensembles. She was previously second flutist with the Las Vegas Philharmonic. Michel Taddei (bassist) is the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra’s principal double bassist, and was solo bassist at the Opera National de Lyon in France for seven seasons. He is also the administrative director of music at The Crowden School in Berkeley.
