EDITOR’S NOTE

Our search begins — again ur Place had only just got over losing Reverend Al to retirement, when new executive director Sandra Danco informed the group that she also would be moving on. Now, the real search begins, DANIELLE with interviews starting up POPE this week for the second next news@ Reverend Al. mondaymag.com “We are looking for someone who has experience in terms of managing an organization in a time of transition and change, preferable someone with good grounded experienced in this work, says Our Place Society Chair Shannon Renault. “Part of the role is managing our community relations, so it would be great to have someone familiar with Victoria. Rev. Allen Tysick founded Our Place in 2007, but retired last summer and started up new organization called Dandelion Society, which works one-on-one with members of the street community. Meanwhile, Danco, former head of the Edmonton Women’s Shelter, filled Tysick’s shoes as executive director just until November. Now, the community centre serving the poor, disabled and homeless of Greater Victoria is looking for its new leader. “We do hope to come to a decision as soon as possible, Renault says. “This is one of the busiest times of year for us.

VICTORIA TURNING 150 Happy big 1-5-0 Victoria! Indeed, 2012 marks the year Victoria has been waiting on for, well, 150 years now. Specifically, the last few, however, as the city revs up to plan its big sesquicentennial celebration this August. To help bring on the celebrations, the city has two big grants it’s offering community members who have the thrill to get involved. The first is an art and cultural grant program to artists of all disciplines that will “bring to light the beauty and history of Victoria’s most valued spaces. The deadline to submit an Expression of Interest is Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012, with the budget for the completed artwork(s) up to $100,000. The second is designed for neighbourhood associations, community groups and community based non-profits to produce their own participatory celebration or project. According to the city, “The Victoria 150 identity will be incorporated into virtually everything the City of Victoria does in 2012. Yes, that means spending tax dollars on new street banners, highprofile signage, promotional products and campaigns. “City programs and activities will be tailored to the anniversary wherever possible and appropriate, to maximize resources and create a well-rounded, highly visual celebration year. Oh, goodie.

Human Body Project creator Tasha Diamant (seventh left) recruited nine artists and activists to stand in solidarity to show their vulnerability on New Year’s Day.

NO MORE GETTING FAT AT PHEGE’S Victorians who frequent Market Square will soon notice the absence of a genial, if portly, face in the heritage space. Fat Phege’s Fudge Factory will take in its familiar sign for the last time and serve its final confections at the end of April, after failed negotiations with landlords left its owners with nowhere to go. “We are disappointed that our lease will not be renewed, said owner Herman Friesen, who runs the store with his wife. Their Vancouver-based landlord gave the owners the option of relocating their business, but the expense of moving all of the kitchen equipment in their shop was too steep, and left them with no choice but to shut down operations. Established in 1976, Fat Phege’s Fudge Factory is the oldest business in Market Square, and the only original business remaining from the centre’s early days. It boasts a long history of satisfying sweet-tooths — from both Victoria and abroad — with its proprietors’ secret fudge recipe, and other handmade treats. “People that were little kids when the store opened are bringing their own kids into the store, he said. “We have couples who visited the store on their honeymoons that come back on their 25th anniversaries. Although he says he’s upset by the decision, Friesen is encouraging long-time patrons to visit again before the shop closes its doors for good. “We want our customers to know that we’re going, and to invite everyone to come by during the holidays and say goodbye, Friesen said. If you’re hoping to bid farewell to the Market Square mainstay, or just want to sample some of the remaining holiday fudge and chocolate before Phege’s shuts its doors for good, the store will still be open seven days a week at 560 Johnson. Of geeks and kings he best thing about making bold predictions in a New Year’s edition is that, if you’re completely wrong, you don’t have to pay the price until the following year. And by then, you’ll have had a good long time to think up a good excuse or blame someone else entirely. It’s a win, win. The World Will Not End: I know I’m going out on a limb here as there are at least a dozen people who feel nervous about the whole Mayan calendar prophecy-ofGRANT doom scenario that foretells the Great Cycle ends on Dec. MCKENZIE 21, 2012. But let’s look at it in practical terms. Five thousand years ago, the Mayan calendar editor, editor@ let’s call him Joey, was asked to help the King plan some mondaymag.com upcoming events. Most likely, the King had forgotten a wedding anniversary or booked a lads’ poker night on the same day as his mother-in-law’s birthday and found that sleeping on the stone bench in the living room was tough on his back. Naturally, Joey was only too happy to help out as plotting the calendar was much easier work than dragging giant slabs of stone from the quarry to build an extension on the King’s pyramid. Plus, ever since the poker-night incident, the King was planning a new sacrificial pyramid on the other side of the mountain where he could send his in-laws in the guise of a “special treat. Now, there’s no denying that Joey was good at his job. A bit of a dreamer and stargazer, he had a special knack for all things celestial. In fact, he was such a math geek he noticed that because of the way Earth spins on its axis, there was a slight repositioning, or wobble, in the night sky that would be reset every 26,000 years. And because the King loved his horoscopes, Joey put this wobble in astrological terms to note that at the end of the next 26,000-year cycle, Earth would be moving from the Age of Pisces to the Age of Aquarius. Pleased with himself, Joey set to work plotting the Mayan calendar until Earth enters the Age of Aquarius on Dec. 21, 2012. When he was done, Joey excitedly hauled all his Powerpoint stone carvings up to the throne room and presented his Ultimate Celestial Too Big For Your Fridge calendar. The King’s reaction, however, wasn’t what he was hoping for. “What the @#$%&, Joey? said the King. “You’ve been down in that workshop for years. I missed two more birthdays and Mother’s Day, and you give me a calendar for the next 5,000 years. What the hell were you thinking? You didn’t even carve any cute puppies or kittens in laundry baskets on the damn thing — and there’s no way I can slip one of those in my pocket or hang it in the garage. You’re fired! And so Joey was sent back to the quarry where he spent his days hauling stone and his nights gazing at the stars and dreaming of the Age of Aquarius. But, just in case I’m wrong and the world does end, at least there will be nobody around to complain. M

Data is true, Victoria has a prob problem with violence Re: Head H + Ass = Statistics, Dec. 22-28 Con Congrats, Grant, on an excellent ďŹ rst year @ the helm of Monday: great job! I must disagree with your editorial, however. As the venerable Bertrand Russell once urged, we must not use data to suit our purposes, even when we feel it is for the 'greater good.' Indeed, it often seems institutions with vested interests use stats to prove whatever conclusion they want. But in the case of Victoria's terrible showing in per capita violence, this time the data is true. Not just the recent rash of 'horriďŹ c crimes,' but just about any weekend downtown is chalk full of ďŹ ghts, aggression, and intimidation. This is what happens, I suppose, when a suburban community sprouts up artiďŹ cally because of a few instantly-manufactured institutions like UVic, without going through centuries-old growing pains like most moreeasterly cities, mixed with a downtown the dimensions of a shoebox. Remember, this is yahoo cowboy country where fair treaties have yet to be agreed upon with First Nations, and politicians are in scandalous cahoots with their logging/development relatives. We should not be afraid, but we should admit Victoria has a problem with violence. KENJI FUSE, SAANICH

Question is: ‘Why are people supporting John Cummins?’ Re: Kieran Report: Cummins’ revenge will be Liberal defeat; Dec. 29 - Jan. 4 So Brian Kieran’s theory about B.C. Conservative party John Cummins’ is that he is all about revenge? That sounds familiar – didn’t people say that about the taxation spoiler Bill Vander Zalm, the supposed right winger who colluded with the NDP? The various “conservative parties in B.C. are mercantilist. While claiming to want less government, they still want to control individuals. So they are just stronger versions of the mercantilism of the B.C. “Liberal party. The big question is “why are people supporting John

Cummins? Certainly B.C. “Liberals Gordon Campbell and Colin Hansen, and government bureaucrats, have botched many things, including revenue forecasts followed by panicking into forcing a different tax regime. Certainly they haven’t been better than NDPers at administering. Overall polling numbers show the NDP has not gained strength, and its leader is not favoured more than the party. Their behaviour is bizarre, including fawning over their failed premier who set B.C. Ferries back many years by not listening to advice that fast catamarans are not suitable for short runs near populated areas. Their head is in the clouds, which is where Marxist notions come from. Are business people hoping to develop something better out of the B.C. Conservative party and its newest loose-cannon leader? I don’t think it is possible in the short term. KIERAN REPORT

What are your predictions for 2012?

Liberal spin doctors rewrite the ’90s i t h their bac k s to the wall, Premier Christy Clark and the New Christy Minstrels have been singing a familiar BRIAN refrain, an old 1990s KIERAN folk tune about the bkieran@ socialist hordes and mondaymag.com B.C.’s near death experience. Last Friday, the desperate Liberals launched a new TV ad, which “talks about the role of (NDP Leader) Adrian Dix in bringing the B.C. economy to its knees in the 1990s. Indeed, B.C.’s economic growth through the 1990s under NDP rule was well below the national average. However, contrary to Liberal’s revisionist song sheet, the 1990s did not represent the collapse of western civilization. Nevertheless, in 2001 then-premier Gordon Campbell was so confident he could do better he created the B.C. Progress Board, a panel of gifted entrepreneurs and academics who had carte blanche to track B.C.’s return to economic and social pre-eminence. In her effort to erase all traces of her predecessor, Premier Clark disbanded the Progress Board and created a new Jobs and Investment Board. But that was not before the Progress Board

The problem of perception isn’t new to promoters like Furneaux and Tyler Pantella. As one community centre explained in reponse to Pantella’s attempt to convince the organization to open its doors: “The problem with all-ages shows is that they are generally geared to underage kids who, in our experience, abuse the rule of law, mistreat the venue, and annoy the neighbours with the activities that go on in the parking lot and park that is not monitored by security. Despite further attempts to convince the community centre’s board of directors, Pantella was left with little hope of using the space. “All ages shows are a great social/community event for kids to enjoy, they contribute to the community arts, and yet so many community centres are not receptive to the idea... [Talking to the board] I felt like I was defending an activity that, to them, was a nuisance. The City of Flowers is a myth, a retirement community of tea houses and horsedrawn carriages glimpsed only in the photos we churn out to lure money from places like California and Toronto. Punks, freaks, losers and artists make this city worth living in, and to deny the next generation the space to express itself and continue to explore our culture is to sacrifice the best parts of the Capital. LOOKING AHEAD TO 2012

Predictions & Horoscopes

To complement Georgia Nicols’ annual — and extremely popular — horoscopes for the year ahead, we asked a few local experts to give their opinions on what trends they predict for 2012 in such areas as fashion, theatre, politics, environment, music and the world at large.

LOCAL POLITICS - MAYOR DEAN FORTIN ith the excitement of the holidays behind us and a new year looming ahead, there’s plenty of local concerns to keep Victoria’s politicians busy. Whether they’re dealing with new or ongoing disputes, the city’s leaders – and citizens – can look forward to a year of challenges and, hopefully, breakthroughs. From infrastructure development to an influx of youthful new residents, Mayor Dean Fortin predicts the issues he says will shape Victoria’s civic landscape in 2012.

W

THE JOHNSON STREET BRIDGE It’s going to be a constant analysis, questioning step by step by step. My goal and my responsibility is to keep getting out there, keep talking to people about it, keep up to date so people feel like they’re getting information. Ultimately, as much as we want to move into operations, it’s an exciting opportunity for Victoria. We’re going to have an iconic, amazing bridge when we’re finished. We just need to make sure that we deliver it so that everybody, both those who like it and don’t like it, are going to celebrate it.

ECONOMIC ’NIMBLENESS’ We talk the talk about economic development – do we have the ability and capacity to deliver? How much can we influence the American economy? That’s going to affect tourism, that’s going to affect foreign investment. Within the realm of a world economy, what can we do as a city to realize our own potential, and how can we do better than every other city that’s out there? We’re going to have to be nimble, we’re going to have to be flexible. That means recognizing that we’re going to really have to engage the community.

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT We’re going to have to get out there a lot, and often. We have to set the expectation for the community: you need to be involved. We’re going to come to you. I think that’s always been the challenge – you want to have the confidence that you’re hearing from a lot of people and starting to reflect the majority, so that means coffee shops and seniors centres, rec centres and every other place. My prediction is you’re going to see the little sandwich board that says ‘Mayor’s open door’ on the road a lot more, and that’s what I love.

[8]

CITY HALL

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION The mayors in the region are saying ’what are those issues that have regional significance that we can talk about?’ What we’re trying to say is, what is going to be good for my citizens that’s also going to be good for the citizens of the region? Can we do an HOV lane on Douglas Street? Well, you need both [Victoria and Saanich] to agree on that, because otherwise you have a really good, fast time and then – boom – you hit Tolmie and everybody crashes. So it has to work together. I think that the challenge to everybody’s budgets throughout Mayor Dean Fortin the region is making everybody say OK, how can we work together to be more efficient? Perhaps that’s the silver lining of an economic downturn.

CELEBRATING THE CITY We have an interesting downtown, we have theatres, we have fantastic restaurants, interesting events happening all over, you can go kayaking in two seconds in the Gorge, you can be on the trail. I think the larger question is, how do we celebrate the exciting and good things about Victoria? People were saying downtown’s dying, everybody’s leaving, but the evidence in front of my eyes is completely to the contrary. I think there is a demographic shift happening in Victoria that’s been subtle – Victoria is getting full of 20- and 30-somethings, and generally their nature is optimistic, my future is bright, I’m looking for exciting things to do. It’s going to fly in the face of the newlywed, nearly dead image of Victoria. — Kate Shepherd

FASHION - KIRSTEN WRIGHT

REGALIA

QUALITY CONTROL utlet stores and mall shops definitely offer some great deals, but you cannot compete with quality. Shoppers are ever more conscious of making their dollar go a long way, and spending a little extra on something you know you will use a lot, like a pair of boots or a jacket, is worth it in the long run. Choose something classic, that can be repaired and maintained – it will last years instead of months.

O

Kirsten Wright

COVER UP

Conservative cuts are in, which could be attributed to the styles from the past represented in shows like Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire. High necklines, long skirts and romantic hairstyles are prevalent, and designers are modernizing these ideas by using brighter colours and more luxurious materials. The goal is a sophisticated yet simple, polished look.

TEXTURES & PATTERNS There really aren’t any rules anymore, there are so many options in fashion and the seasons change so rapidly that really anything goes. One thing I have noticed is contrasting heavy textures like chunky wool knits or velvet with light, almost summery pieces in silk and sheer. The better quality the fabrics, the nicer the combinations look.

SECOND-HAND I started selling gently-used clothing about two years ago alongside the locally made items at Regalia, and the response has been amazing. PREDICTIONS Continued on Page 13

It is best if you can live according to your own timetable – eat when you want to eat, sleep when you want to sleep. This suits your genius-like personality.

BOARDING PASS Even if you aren’t classically good looking, you appear beautiful. You project an aura of grace and perfection. You have style in how you dress, at times almost in costume. As a child, you looked angelic. Naturally, you FEB 19 - MARCH 20 can fool people! (And you definitely fool yourself.) Some call you a dreamer but this suggests a head in the clouds full of wishful thinking. Einstein was no head in the clouds! What you are is a visionary. You visualize goals and dreams, and the extent to which you believe they are possible, they will manifest! (Pretty heady stuff.) You are sensitive and sympathetic to the sufferings of others, but you don’t deny yourself pleasure and luxury. (You really know how to up the ante.) You weep because your sign rules the tear ducts. And because Pisces also rules the feet, you adore shoes and love to dance. (Was it you who ate the last mango in Paris?)

BOARDING PASS You believe life is a do-ityourself project. And few are as successful at tackling this job as you are. For starters, you’re the artisan of the zodiac. You can do anything with your hands. You love the challenge of seeing something someone MARCH 21 - APRIL 19 else did and then doing it yourself. (Without training, of course – that’s cheating.) All Aries have the heart of a hero or heroine. (I’m not kidding.) This is why you eagerly leap into a fresh situation, and are always ready to save the underdog. (“Captain Underpants strikes again!”) You are brave, courageous and fearless. You are the warrior of the zodiac. But you’re also tenderhearted and a pushover for puppies and kittens. “Aawwww.” (It’s kinda pathetic.) Because of you, worlds are discovered and continents are conquered. Yeah, yeah, it goes to your head, which, incidentally, is the part of the body that Aries rules. Who wears more hats than you?

FLIGHT PLAN FOR 2012 In-flight Introductions (Relationships and Romance) Relationships will be tricky because of a planetary influence that could go one of two ways. One way will trigger conflicts about shared property, inheritances and anything you own jointly with others. The other way will trigger wild, crazy, fantastic sex! (Tough choice.) So your year ahead could be one of conflict about something you share, or you might as well move a fridge into the bedroom. Quite likely, relationships will improve (or they’re already great) due to your positive frame of mind. Because this is a fact: You’re happier and more optimistic than you’ve been in decades! Naturally, this affects your personality and style of relating to others. (Ya think?) Because home and family are so blessed in your year ahead, romantic partners who live together will experience a year of joy. No question. If you minimize quarrels about shared responsibilities and possessions, you can call this your lucky libido year! Yeah!

FLIGHT PLAN FOR 2012 In-flight Introductions (Relationships and Romance) Two opposing influences are at play this year with your relationships. The challenging influence is fiery Mars because Mars will be opposite your sign for most of the year. This could create conflicts with those closest to you because it makes you feel impatient and exasperated with others! (Fear not, this will fade by the fall.) Until then, just be aware of it and cope. Fortunately, lucky Jupiter beautifully offsets this aggressive impulse by making you tolerant and forgiving. (Saved by the bell!) Jupiter also boosts your optimism and makes you attractive and appealing to others. Your humour and positive point of view will magnetize people to you. (Starting to feel like a termite in a yo-yo?) Count on meeting many new faces. You can also count on a refreshing ability to defend your own best interests in all relationships. (Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets!)

FLIGHT PLAN FOR 2012 In-flight Introductions (Relationships and Romance) With Saturn opposing your sign until October this year, all relationships will make increasing demands on you. (Oy vey.) Definitely, those that are more trouble than they’re worth will end. (If they haven’t already.) And good partnerships will have to make adjustments. Take note: Often our discontent is based on our absurdly exaggerated notion of the happiness of others. Even co-workers and professional partnerships will be challenging. Fortunately, in June this year, Jupiter changes signs and this is good news for you! This will mean all your relationships will improve for the next 18 months (into 2014!) How encouraging! Things about others that irritate you won’t even matter then. Nevertheless, for some time in the future, Pluto is at odds with your sign, which means you should avoid serious arguments with others. They could get nasty. Instead, use this influence to rebuild what is worth saving.

Holding Pattern (Job and Career) Everything to do with your job and public reputation is extremely strong now because you’ve been working for this since 1999 (or 2005, when you turned the corner). But you have not yet arrived at your goal – not yet! That’s why this year is a time of preparation. Don’t be cocky that it’s all in the bag and you know it all. You don’t. In fact, this is the perfect year to study, take courses or get further training, or travel to broaden your experience, so that by 2013 you’re performance-ready for the big leagues. Businesses related to real estate, food preparation, families, women’s products and anything to do with the marketing of food will flourish this year. By the end of 2012, sports, show business, the entertainment world and the hospitality industry get a real boost. Ditto for jobs related to childcare or child education. Your long shot might pay off!

Holding Pattern (Job and Career) Many Pisces people are earning more money, which is a good thing because support from others has diminished. But lo! This year begins with lucky Jupiter in your House of Earnings. Yay! Not only will this boost your earnings this year, Jupiter will bring opportunities to make money on the side or get a better job. Mars opposite your sign can make you defiant with co-workers and partners, but it can also make you defend your interests and demand your fair share. You won’t take a backseat. You know your rights and you’ll demand them. If you’re in management, you will be strong about taking charge. Look at your goals and see what you have to do to achieve them. You are definitely going to augment or increase whatever you believe is important. You are nearing a career peak in about three-to-four years, so get ready!

Holding Pattern (Job and Career) Here’s an area that’s looking great! For starters, most of you will boost your income because moneybags Jupiter is travelling through your House of Earnings. Not only will you feel cash rich, you’ll feel richer because you’re treating yourself to goodies. (“Look at me!”) But don’t blow this money. (Which you’re tempted to do.) Take a serious look at your goals and plan wisely. Never before has Pluto travelled across the top of your chart. (Next 10-plus years.) This will trigger a complete change of career or life direction for you, perhaps the biggest that has ever happened in your life. Since this potential change awaits you, having some coin in your pocket will help facilitate your adventurous plans. (Ya think?) In addition, in the next few years, financial support from others could diminish, forcing you to rely on yourself, which is something you do very well, thank you. (You’re a hero, remember?)

Useful Load (Home, Family and Galley Slaves) It gives me great pleasure to announce...more than any other sign, you will have the most positive boost when it comes to your private life: your family, your loved ones and your home. The year 2012 is a wonderful year for real-estate speculation or for anything to do with improving your home, whether through renovations, redecorating or just buying goodies so that you feel richer and happier there. Yay me! Not only will your home expand with wealth, it will expand with people as well! Family relationships will improve and there will be joy among the land and no one shall suffer from cavities or failing grades. Hey, it doesn’t get better than that. If you can avoid squabbles about shared property and shared responsibilities, you’re laughing! Because your home might expand through marriage, adoption or birth, be prepared to accommodate this. Stock the fridge.

Useful Load (Home, Family and Galley Slaves) When it comes to your home, family and private life, your world will simply get better and better as the year unfolds. Trust me. (Some years pop open, but yours unfolds gently. Aawww!) By fall, you will enter a period of about 16 months that is the best time for real-estate investments in more than a decade. If you cannot buy or sell, do whatever you can to improve your home through renovations, redecorating or making major purchases. Something will happen by the end of this year that makes you feel richer where you live. Indeed, some of you will be in bigger digs! For various reasons, according to the details of your own life, family relationships will become warmer, kinder and more mutually generous. (Gosh). For some (this year or next) your family will increase in size through marriage, birth or adoption. “Welcome!”

Albertan Gentleman seeks his 2012 Soul Mate I currently represent a sincere, successful, established, professional, semiretired Albertan gentleman living on the island who is actively searching for a partner to share his life.

Useful Load (Home, Family and Galley Slaves) Things will improve at home for two reasons: You’re going to feel more financially flush and this relieves some family tension as well as providing fun perks for everyone. The second reason is that by summer this year, your entire happiness quotient takes a lovely leap! And when you’re happier, everyone else is happier, too. (It’s the rotten-apple-in-the-barrel in reverse.) Because old patterns are breaking down, you’re giving up self-imposed limitations (as well as limitations from without), which means you’ll feel freer and younger! In fact, your drive for freedom might cause someone to accuse you of reckless behaviour. (Ignore them.) Start dreaming about where you want to live and the kind of home you want because by the summer of 2013, you enter an 18-month window (best in over a decade) for real estate and improving your home. Family life will be happier then, too.

HOROSCOPES

LOOKING AHEAD TO 2012

GEORGIA NICOLS

BOARDING PASS Fair Venus is the ruler of Taurus, which is why you love your creature comforts! As I say every year: You love good food, good wine, good sex and a nice place to live. Because you need financial security, it’s important for you to have APRIL 20 - MAY 20 money in the bank, mortgagefree land and a solid, comfortable home. You love beautiful things, verdant nature, gorgeous antiques and quality items — wood, pewter and sterling silver. In fact, many of you are collectors. You might work in a bank, or an antique shop, or a vinery or restaurant. You are the gourmand of the zodiac! You appreciate the best that life can offer, whether it’s a great loaf of bread or a rack of lamb. You will always surround yourself with the good things in life, and money is particularly good! (You don’t want the buck to stop before it gets to you!)

BOARDING PASS Oh clever Gemini, thou of nimble mind and quick wit! You’re fast-thinking, fast-talking and fast-moving. You play with words and concepts, trying them on like coats to test their comfort. You know what’s going on. (You also know that MAY 21- JUNE 20 what the large print giveth, the small print taketh away.) You’re plugged in, cutting edge and ahead of the curve. (You’re not dusty!) You’re curious about everything and you need lots of freedom. You love short trips. You also love information being constantly bombarded at you, which is why you read magazines, books, watch TV and surf the web all at the same time. Your twin nature gives you two jobs, two homes, two cars — and sometimes two lovers. (Naughty!) You prefer to bounce between two worlds because just one is too boring — and you don’t do boring!

FLIGHT PLAN FOR 2012 In-flight Introductions (Relationships and Romance) Lucky you! This year begins with an unusually long journey of Mars, which in turn makes you playful and sexy! It definitely increases your physical urges and galvanizes your desire to satisfy sexual pleasures. (In fact, you’ll be uncharacteristically ready to make the first move.) You’ll be keen to play, explore sports and enjoy the arts. You want to party, enjoy social diversions and take a vacation! Meanwhile, you have the respect of others for working hard and, of course, you and your partner will be delighted with your increased earnings (which come later in the year and next year). Since you have a wonderful opportunity (and incentive) to improve your health this year, why not choose something you can share with someone, like a yoga class or some physical sport? Work hard to solidify important partnerships because they will be tested in the next few years. (Don’t be quick to resist temptation — it might not come your way again.)

FLIGHT PLAN FOR 2012 In-flight Introductions (Relationships and Romance) A popular year ahead — you are loved! Expect to be involved with groups, classes and organizations. Group activities will be a source of joy. New acquaintances could motivate you to change future goals. Romantically, you might parent someone or they might play this role for you, or perhaps you’ll be involved with someone of an age difference? Romantic partnerships are serious, not frivolous, because you are consciously laying the groundwork for your long-term future. Casual friendships will benefit you. In fact, friends will be supportive. Naturally, this benefit is a twoway street; you will help friends as well. By summer, you really hit your stride! You’ll enjoy a popularity boost and become involved with groups working for social reform or causes that interest you. People stimulate you this year! Romance with someone from a different background is likely. Life will flow more easily. You will be sought after.

FLIGHT PLAN FOR 2012 In-flight Introductions (Relationships and Romance) Ah yes, sex can lead to close dancing and this year, increased popularity can lead to romance. You’ll be very popular in 2012! (The last time this happened was around 200001.) Many will join classes, clubs and associations, which in turn will lead to new friendships and flirtatious titillations. You’ll make a strong impression on others this year because you’re so assertive. For the first half of 2012, you’ll feel “lucky” because of a special relationship with Jupiter that helps your life to flow more easily. This is good because there are challenges. Relationships that are “over” will end. Don’t try to save anything not worth saving. (A challenge for you, who can’t let go of anything or anyone!) Nevertheless, others will think highly of you. In the meantime, remember that it’s important to look good at a distance.

Holding Pattern (Job and Career) Because you have survived heavy challenges, you know how effective you are. You know your strengths and limitations and this is empowering! In the next decade, your efforts will bring you rewards on a silver platter, and probably with less effort. (Go figure.) Your chances for personal advancement are excellent because people view you as someone who gets things done. In fact, you can hugely improve your health and endurance. (This is a great time to take up a physical discipline to help you do this.) Your earnings will improve from the summer onwards because you will continue to work tirelessly. By the end of this year, you’ll get special recognition or acknowledgment for the work you have done in the last few years. Count on this. (You have come to realize it’s not so much doing the thing you like to do, but liking the thing you have to do that makes the difference.)

Holding Pattern (Job and Career) This is the beginning of a 12-year cycle of growth for you. You’re in a holding pattern regarding future success. You’re testing different approaches. (Trying on those coats again.) Look for opportunities in the entertainment world, show business, sports, the hospitality industry and working with children. After July, you can parlay opportunities to begin a new career, especially where people pay money to be entertained or have a good time. Consider getting further training because this is your time of “preparation.” Whatever you set in motion will be successful in about nine years. Nevertheless, this is a good year to win recognition for your achievements! People are impressed by your diligence and the impression you create now will pay off in the future. Moneybags Jupiter enters your sign this June for the first time since 2001 to stay for one whole year! Good fortune for Geminis! (Yay me!)

Holding Pattern (Job and Career) This is a wonderful year for your career and reputation. Lucky moneybags Jupiter is travelling across the top of your chart boosting your good name and putting it up in lights! That’s why you’re working so hard: You sense you can get ahead. Expect a promotion, praise or some kind of public recognition. Work-related travel is likely. Job opportunities in medicine, the law, higher education and travel are also possible. Yes, there are obstacles. This is a fact. (“Whaaat? Again?”) While Saturn squares your sign, this is inevitable. But lo! Saturn will stop squaring your sign in October. (And will not hassle you like this again for 14 years.) This is a particularly good year for business and finance, in part because you’re not afraid to think big. (“But Alice, this is the biggest thing I ever got into!” “Ralph, the biggest thing you ever got into was your pants.”)

Useful Load (Home, Family and Galley Slaves) When it comes to your private life, there’s good news and bad news. The good news is for the first time since 2001, lucky Jupiter returns to your sign to stay for a year. Ta-da! This means you’ll be happier in 2012! Your daily existence will please you and make you feel richer and more fortunate. (Yes! This is what we want to hear!) The bad news is (if indeed it is bad news) there will be increased activity and chaos on the home front. This could be due to renovations, visiting guests, residential moves, anything. However, this might trigger domestic friction. Fortunately, by June, you’ll take all of this more easily in your stride. Things that annoyed you before will not even bother you. Phfft! No biggie. (This could be maturity — that time when you start talking to your parents with the same tone of voice you use talking to your kids.)

Useful Load (Home, Family and Galley Slaves) You continue to focus on home and family. Like last year, you want to secure your home base, which is why some of you are making residential moves, but most are busy with repairs, renovations and doing whatever helps you feel snug and secure in your safe refuge. But something is different this year. Your everyday exchanges with others are powerful! You project yourself now with strong energy! The upside is you easily get your point across; the downside is you will overwhelm or threaten others. Money will start to flow your way, which helps. But something you started around seven years ago is being tested now and might discourage you. Authority figures are tough. (“Talk to the hand!”) Do not focus on so-called failures. It’s time to saddle up, lock’n’load. Move on! (If you don’t let go of the old, how can you make room for the new?)

Useful Load (Home, Family and Galley Slaves) Your home and family life will improve because of your industry and, ultimately, your increased earnings later this year and next year. This means you have money to put into your home and to share with loved ones. Because you want to take a vacation, this also can promote family togetherness and fun. However, fiery Mars could make you impatient with children. Try to avoid power struggles here because if you take the time to analyze it, that’s all it is — a clash of egos. (Generally nothing to do with reality.) Don’t get suckered into these because they destroy family harmony and your relationship with your kids. (This also applies to romantic relationships.) Some of you will explore owning vacation property or fixing up a second home or looking for ways to enjoy entertaining getaways. In fact, if you save your pennies, you can explore wonderful real-estate opportunities in 2014-15.

BOARDING PASS You’re such a nourishing sign I call you the Big Tit! You can fix anything – a tasteless soup, an ailing plant, a crying child, a stalled machine and a broken heart. You’re a caring friend because you’re sympathetic. Of course, this kind of JUNE 21 - JULY 22 sensitivity makes you vulnerable as well! (Your feelings are easily hurt.) You value quality but hate to pay full price. (Let’s face it: you’re cheap.) Fortunately, the best things in life are on sale sooner or later. You have more staying power than any sign in the zodiac. You’re not a quitter. (A company is known by the people it keeps.) You don’t like to make the first move, you watch the other guy. You’re a great cook, you have a green thumb and you’re funny! You like the water, whether it’s a soak in the tub or sailing. (You’ve also noticed how many friends you suddenly have when you rent a house on a beach.)

GEORGIA NICOLS

LOOKING AHEAD TO 2012

BOARDING PASS You are misunderstood. (You hide your age and you’re 10 pounds heavier than you look.) The sign of Leo rules show business, the entertainment world, the theatre, the hospitality industry and romance. Of course, you’re flamboyant! JULY 23 - AUG 22 You’re the performer, the entertainer extraordinaire! No sign is more dramatically romantic than you. (“Roses!”) Naturally, this gives you a flashy panache. But your stylish gusto for life hides the fact that in truth, you’re very serious. (Oh yes.) You take few things in life casually. Your work matters, your family matters, your loved ones matter and more. You care about your community, your country and the world. This is why (no matter what you do for a living), in essence you are a teacher. (And yes – if your students are old enough – they’re in love with you.) Leos are royal, noble, dignified and yet, jauntily sporty and the life of the party. You love being you! FLIGHT PLAN FOR 2012 In-flight Introductions (Relationships and Romance) Now the story can be told. Relationships have been painfully confusing since 1998. Fourteen years! (Aagghh.) That’s how long Neptune has been travelling through your House of Partnerships and Marriage. (Totally unfair, but who said life was fair?) Neptune represents ideals, unrealistic expectations and the hope for perfection plus disillusionment and disappointment. (Sound familiar?) In February this year, Neptune moves on. Hurrah! In the last decade, you have over-idealized relationships and created problems that in some ways were primarily in your mind. From this year onwards, for the rest of your life, you will never have this confusion again. (Break open the bubbly!) By summer, relationships become much easier. Life flows more smoothly. (Am I on drugs?) Travel is also blessed, which means many will meet someone from a different background or another culture. Furthermore, your reputation will start to shine and sparkle! Hello? Nothing is as sexy as success! (Trick out your bedroom and get platform boots.) Holding Pattern (Job and Career) Amazing things will happen with your earnings and career in 2012. For starters, more than ever before in your life, you’ll be driven to earn money. Your ambition to create wealth will surprise even you. However, this also means you’ll blow a lot of money. (Oh yeah.) Be careful because you might be outrageously extravagant. (Moi?) For the first half of 2012, look for opportunities in publishing, the media, medicine, the law and higher education. Work-related travel will be big. (Expect to travel waaay more.) As the year progresses, finally moneybags Jupiter starts to sail across the top of your chart for the first time since 1999-2000. This beautifully promotes your reputation and, for some, a chance to put your name up in lights. A few will experience job changes. From mid-summer onwards, your finances are blessed. Plus you’ll make a great impression on important people. Hey, you can’t lose! Give thanks for this successful year ahead! Useful Load (Home, Family and Galley Slaves) Many of you will make residential moves this year. That’s because during 2009-2013, residential moves are likely for Leos. However, we can never look at one dimension in isolation in our lives because everything is interconnected. Since you’re coming into a successful time with reputation, career and your job, these things might also affect where you live. Success might prompt you to move. Or it might allow you to pour money into your home and family. Perhaps you’ll treat the family to a trip? Many of you will spend much more on family members and where you live. By midsummer, life will flow more easily. Many things will be within your reach with surprisingly little effort! Your generosity with family members will be strong (of course, it always is). You’ll be so happy even your lazy brother-in-law will look cute. (Well, that might be a stretch.)

BOARDING PASS You are bright, clever, witty and the world’s best mimic. People love your mind and are entertained by your conversation because you know so much! (Actually, you have this big locker where you store trivia – totally useless facts you AUG 23 - SEPT 22 can’t get rid of.) Although you can be as reckless as the next person, you could write a book on healthy living, expounding on the details of diet, hygiene and exercise. You have an organizational mind and an eye for detail. It’s true your humour is self-deprecating but you take pot shots at everyone else as well. (Because of you, the sacred cow is an endangered species.) But beneath your wit and sophistication, you harbour a strong idealization of what you wish your life could be. You respect true giving to others and being of service where needed, whether to an individual, a community or the world. Ah yes, Mother Theresa was a Virgo (and so is Charlie Sheen). FLIGHT PLAN FOR 2012 In-flight Introductions (Relationships and Romance) The year 2012 holds much romantic promise. For starters, your gonads are in overdrive and you’re feeling sexy. As the year progresses, you might travel more and explore new territories through higher studies or job changes. You will meet people who are "different" or from another background. Adventures in publishing, the media, the law, medicine and dealing with foreign countries will also generate new introductions, as well as re-ignite existing relationships (especially through travel). Let us not forget that fiery Mars, the planet that the rules your sexual energy will be in your sign for most of the year! (Lordy Lordy!) It’s safe to say you can look forward to a fun-loving, romantic year. However, all is not sweetness and light. (Here’s the small print.) Mars in your sign will make you dominant. If others give you lots of rope, no problem. But if anyone is demanding – watch out! Holding Pattern (Job and Career) Others are generous to you this year. This is a great year to raise cash, ask for new equipment, get a loan, get a mortgage, increase your budget or use the resources of others for your work. Ask and ye shall receive because others will open their arms and their pocketbooks. Some will experience sweeping changes that will make their lives richer. Count on this. Later this year, opportunities in publishing, the media, working with foreign countries, being involved in higher education, medicine and the law will benefit you. Work-related travel is likely. It’s a strong year for writers, teachers and publishers. Essentially, because you want a broader experience of life — you’ll reach out. And when you reach out, you generally end up with a handful of something! By the end of the year, many opportunities abound. People are impressed with you. Definitely! Useful Load (Home, Family and Galley Slaves) Your home might improve this year because it’s easier to get a mortgage or a loan if you want to do home improvements. Plus some will receive an inheritance. Your reputation with authority figures will improve as the year wears on and this could have a positive domino effect on your private world as well. However, because fiery Mars is making you so dominant and forceful this year, you have to be aware of how strong you appear to others. They might see you as bossy, pushy, insensitive and rashly independent! You’re not trying to act this way but you might appear this way. Therefore, be mindful of how you act and speak. You might need to consciously make an effort to be patient and tolerant. Hey — you want to get along with loved ones, right? (After the game, the king and the pawn go back in the same box.)

BOARDING PASS You’ve got schmoozing down to an art form. But ah-ha! The reason you instinctively know how to relate to so many is you need someone in your life. You worked to hone your social skills because you prefer to have company when you do SEPT 23 - OCT 22 things. (Unlike Woody Allen who said, “I was the best I ever had.”) This is why you constantly meet others in restaurants, coffee bars and clubs. You love scintillating conversation, interesting rooms, beautiful clothes, books, music and a good table at a nice restaurant. You know a lot about fashion and the law. You’re allergic to overhead fluorescent lighting and bad art. Others admire you because you’re chic (shabby or bargain). You have an excellent eye! And who is more diplomatic and charming than you? No one! You appear to be deeply superficial, but you have a strong social conscience. Everyone loves you. FLIGHT PLAN FOR 2012 In-flight Introductions (Relationships and Romance) Partnerships are critical for you because you’re not a loner. Relationships are very important. You’ll be glad to learn this year brings good news because it benefits all your partnerships and close friendships. In fact, this benefit is so strong, many of you will marry or commit to a partnership (intimate or professional). You might also become involved with someone from another country or a different culture. Something about these relationships will be consciousness-expanding. They will broaden your experience of life. Very possibly, your new partner will be older, richer or more established. (A rich partner is a great labour-saving device.) Counterpoint to this, a different influence will come into play for most of this year: Someone behind the scenes could be working against your best interests – possibly, although unlikely – someone you don’t even know. (Yikes!) Be aware of this because if you have a suspicion this is happening, it is! Holding Pattern (Job and Career) Since 2009-10, you’ve been in a new sandbox, which means you’re in an ongoing process of re-inventing yourself. This metamorphosis will continue for the next seven years. However, this year, partnerships will benefit you! (This includes working in conjunction with others.) In addition, many of you will want to spin off and become self-employed. (A feeling you’ve had for several years now.) If this is the case, be aware that later this year, if you want support from others or you want to raise funds from another source or borrow money, your chances are better than they’ve been in more than a decade! Most of you, however, will maintain your current holding pattern. One thing is certain: From July onwards, your finances will improve. Travel – either for personal reasons or job-related – will broaden your horizons. Your creative potential is huge for the last six months of this year. You will easily accomplish something, which otherwise might be daunting. Useful Load (Home, Family and Galley Slaves) For you, the ambience and the "feel" of your home are critical. You’re extremely visual and no sign in the zodiac can compete with you when it comes to being affected by one’s surroundings. (Who else knows there are 37 shades of navy blue?) You actually feel different according to the lighting in a room, or the colour scheme, the smell and the furnishings. You have the soul of an interior designer. Therefore, it is interesting to note that later this year (for some as early as July) you will benefit from the wealth of others through inheritances or loans, or benefit indirectly through the increased wealth of your partner. Whatever the case, you will use this financial good fortune to fix up your digs! This might happen this summer, later in the year or early next year. Expect fun projects ahead. Family relationships are good this year. However, some kind of behind-the-scenes activity might create problems. Defend your best interests. Wear bold colours!

HOROSCOPES

LOOKING AHEAD TO 2012

BOARDING PASS Oh passionate Scorpio! You are so powerful and intense you blow others away! (But you don’t even grasp this.) You make the impossible happen. You rally the troops at a moment’s notice. Many great commanders and generals are OCT 23 - NOV 21 your sign. (Patton was a quintessential Scorpio.) Yet, you’re so playful and fun-loving! What a complex range of emotions – but who is surprised? You don’t do anything halfway. Issues are black and white. You go to extremes. Your take-charge quality introduces improvements everywhere, but what you most want to transform is yourself. You see new uses for things and ways to accomplish objectives that dazzle others. You have the mind of a sleuth and are very secretive. You’re hot in bed and whatever you want, you want it now! “Better to fight for something than live for nothing,” was General Patton’s belief. Some are born to greatness. Some achieve it. Some get it as a graduation gift. FLIGHT PLAN FOR 2012 In-flight Introductions (Relationships and Romance) In romance, two opposite influences are at play for you this year. One influence (which began two years ago) continues to urge you to be cautious about relationships. You don’t want be weighed down. You want to be free of encumbrances. You definitely want to be free of bad choices! So part of you is purging anyone from your life who you think is no longer beneficial. (And because your sign rules garbage, among other things, when you purge something – it’s gone!) The other influence is completely different. Jupiter will be opposite your sign (for the first time in 12 years), bringing you satisfaction in partnerships. (What a contradiction!) You’ll discover involvement with others is joyful and gives deeper meaning to your life. Once again, just as around 2000, you can meet someone older, richer or more established who will benefit you. (Could be a great labour-saving device.) Holding Pattern (Job and Career) This is the best year in more than a decade for your job. If you want to get a job, you can pull it off! Others will get a better boss, better working conditions, better duties or a better workplace. Your employment scene is the one area you can really improve this year because you easily impress bosses and co-workers. In addition, you’ll be physically vigorous and will approach everything with self-assurance. New opportunities will lead to promotions or an increase in salary. This is the perfect year to demonstrate to others what you can do and how well you can do it because people are impressed with the energy and confidence you project. And it will be easy to get recognition for what you do! Nevertheless, in the big picture, everything is still in flux. Your feet won’t really touch the ground until late 2013. (But hey, what’s not to like?) Useful Load (Home, Family and Galley Slaves) Your home is in a state of flux because you’re still giving up people, places and possessions. And the dust will not settle until about 2013. (Older Scorpios might recall a similar time in the early ’80s.) Nevertheless, this is a positive time because relationships are strong. You have a sense of culmination in some areas of your life and this makes you feel satisfied. (Nothing like satisfaction to feel satisfied!) Take note: You’re very good at getting rid of what you no longer need and this is what you must do this year. Rifle through closets, cupboards, lockers, storage units, garages and attics. Sell, recycle or turf what you no longer need. Downsize wherever you can. If you’re not using it – out! You’ll feel so much better when everything is closer to the bone. Scorpios rarely have a minimalist approach to their homes. (Translation: You have lots of stuff!)

BOARDING PASS You adore travel, seeing other cultures, meeting new people and being stimulated by the world. And if you can’t travel a long distance, you travel in your own backyard: hiking, biking, canoeing, rowing or climbing. You want to be free NOV 22 - DEC 21 to enjoy the outdoors and feel blue sky overhead! You are a seeker of answers, a philosopher/teacher. Animals play an important role in your life, especially large animals (if you’re fortunate). You abhor cruelty to animals and often work with them as a hobby or in your job. Physical activity and a sense of optimism are definitely survival issues for you. It’s important for you to believe in a better tomorrow and it takes courage to do this. But all Sagittarians face their future courageously! In part because they know that if they invent an airplane, a pessimist will invent a parachute. And even their expectation of this is optimistic!

BOARDING PASS Life plays a joke on you because you’re so serious when you’re young. Even as a baby you look “old!” (Naturally, when you’re 15, you’re the one who buys the beer.) But after the age of 40, a magical reversal occurs and by the time DEC 22 - JAN 19 you’re in your 80s you will pass for 25 years younger! Why? Because Capricorns are old when they’re young and young when they’re old. Most curious! Of course, appearances matter to you, which is why you like to do things correctly. You want respect, prestige and status. You’re a hard worker (no pain, no gain) and hide your feelings in public. You value family, tradition, money in the bank and security for you and your loved ones. You like to be useful, you’re thrifty and you hate waste. You’re a practical, careful, organized planner. You’re classy and always fit in. And you always look like you know what you’re doing! (Fake it till you make it.)

FLIGHT PLAN FOR 2012 In-flight Introductions (Relationships and Romance) Glory hallelujah! You’re in party mode! This is one of the best times in your life for love affairs, romance and flirtatious escapes. Grab every opportunity to travel for pleasure, participate in sports, socialize with others and enjoy playful activities with children. Some years, work is what is emphasized; other years, we have a chance to play. This year is your turn to play, flirt and enjoy the company of others. (Do indulge yourself in these pleasures because the clock is ticking. You will soon be working hard to take advantage of job opportunities.) In particular, be open to relationships with people who are from a radically different background. These relationships will broaden your experience of life and teach you more about it. You will especially love travelling. Your sense of humour shines this year. (Someday in the future you’ll look back on all this and plow into a parked car.)

FLIGHT PLAN FOR 2012 In-flight Introductions (Relationships and Romance) Yes, these are good times! So naturally, good times are reflected in your relationships. For starters, because many of you will travel so much this year, you’ll meet people from other cultures and different countries and explore exciting new connections. (Ooo-la-la!) As if that weren’t enough, by late summer, one of the loveliest planetary influences kicks in (lasting for a whole year), to promote love affairs, romance, more vacations, parties, pleasurable times and a strong connection with sports. Yay! This year is fantastic for ongoing romance as well as for giving birth to new romantic relationships, especially with people from different backgrounds. Grab every opportunity to travel. Enjoy broadening your horizons and meeting new people. Accept all invitations. (This is all rather unusual for you! But why not enjoy it to the hilt?) You’re a sexy, passionate, earthy sign. Grab what life has to offer you now!

Holding Pattern (Job and Career) This is a fortunate year with travel, vacations and the promise of sweet romance, whether in new relationships or existing partnerships. But as the year progresses, your chances to improve your job will become better than they’ve been in 12 years! (You’re the big winner this year.) By fall, be on the lookout for ways to get a better job, or improve your existing job, or say goodbye to your horrible boss or work under better conditions. All these improvements await you. And one reason you’ll make this a reality is you’re more ambitious this year than you have ever been before in your life. You’re not openly ruthless. (That’s not your style.) But with Mars high in your chart for most of this year you’re determined to achieve something and willing to work hard to make it so. And yes, you want the credit! Useful Load (Home, Family and Galley Slaves) Playful times with children will definitely delight you this year. In fact, some of you will expand your family through marriage, birth or adoption. Many of you will explore renting or buying vacation property because, indeed, this is a good year for financial speculation as well as travel for pleasure. (Despite the grim prospect for some signs.) By design or whimsy, you will discover you can strengthen many areas of your life, especially your health, your home and your family relationships. You see that you have survived the test of something you started about five years ago and indeed, now you can secure your life against adversities in the future. Parents, in particular, are impressed with you and, in turn, you have the patience and perseverance to please them. "The family that plays together, stays together" has always been your motto. (Sagittarians born in November might have surprise pregnancies.) Whaat?

Holding Pattern (Job and Career) Well, things are looking rosy, indeed! Natch. This is your time of harvest. No matter what your age, cherished dreams will continue to come true. (As many already have.) Of course, a time of harvest is also when crops fail. Therefore, you will see clearly what is working in your life and what is not. Let go of what is not working. Move on! Don’t beat yourself up because there is so much that is working and this is where you need to focus. Travel continues to be huge for you this year. (As if you haven’t travelled enough.) Other areas of major focus and success will be higher education, publishing, the media, medicine and the law. You will continue to broaden your horizons and seek adventure. (Many of you are surprising even yourselves at how gutsy you are to explore new things and how willing you are to spend!) Useful Load (Home, Family and Galley Slaves) Now we see your time of harvest extending into your private life. Things will go swimmingly at home and within your family. This is a wonderful year (like last year) to invest in your home through renovations, redecorating or major purchases. This is also an excellent time to buy real estate for your own use or for speculation. Many of you are expanding your families through marriage, adoption or birth. Whatever the case, your private life feels expansive, rich and joyful! Family relationships are warmer and, in fact, you might be surprised to discover how much love there is within your family. (By nature you are not demonstrative, and certainly not in public.) One major exception will be that some Capricorns, especially those born in December, will experience a radical change in partnerships and close friendships. But ultimately, this is all for the best. Enjoy your loved ones and home!

INTREPID THEATRE’S FRINGE FEST

FASHION - KIRSTEN WRIGHT PREDICTIONS Continued from Page 8 “Second-hand” really isn’t a dirty word anymore. Considering you’re saving money and recycling, it’s pretty responsible to buy second-hand and vintage. Consignment shops are different from thrift stores. We do most of the work for you, choosing only the best second-hand pieces in excellent condition. Putting clothes on consignment is a great way to refresh your wardrobe, as well. There is no sense in hanging on to things you never use.

COMMON SENSE Following trends can be fun; designers are always coming up with new twists on old ideas that you can borrow and apply to your own wardrobe. However, it’s important to think about your shape and personal style, and make sure you’re buying things that fit you well, and make you look and feel comfortable, instead of just something that you know is popular. If you gravitate towards a certain era or garment shape, go with it! Don’t worry that it’s outside of the current trends – things go in and out of style so quickly, you might just be ahead of the curve. Who knows?

An unprecedented number of Victorians will flock to see our brightest emerging and established stars, taking control of their own artistic destiny. Unfettered by a biased selection process or outrageous venue costs, imagination will get free rein.

MEN’S FASHION - DALE OLSEN ’m predicting an exciting 2012 with the return of colour to men’s clothing after several black, white and grey seasons. Bright colours have taken over the sock business and socks will only get wilder. Printed shirts will make a comeback and casual blazers over jeans will be an even stronger look in the coming year. Jeans won’t be skinny, but they won’t be baggy; they’ll be straight and dark blue. Technical fabrics will continue to become part of everyday clothing.

foresee this coming year will find Victoria audiences awakening to the fact that some of the best talent to be found is the homegrown variety, within the context of some of the city's hardest working small arts organizations; and that Victorians — unlike our provincial rulers — do understand how supporting local artists is necessary in creating a holistically healthy community.

At the heart of it, file sharing shouldn’t be looked upon as an illegal activity, but rather a consumer paradigm shift. It’s simple: people want to obtain recorded music for free or very cheap, and the more of it they have access to, the more likely they are to buy concert tickets and/or merchandise related to their newly discovered favourite artists. This isn’t great news if you’re a major record label, but if you’re a young touring band that’s primarily relying on concert tickets and T-shirt sales for income, this perspective might seem very healthy. The reality is there’s already an entire generation of

Sites like Pandora Radio, Rhapsody and Spotify offer neither illegal file sharing nor legal downloads, but rather specific streaming content on demand. The strength of these services is continually guiding users towards more music that might be of interest to them. The test over time is going to be whether or not all the various stakeholders involved (artists, labels, publishers, portals, etc.) can be satisfied monetarily and not become victims of their own greed.

ELECTRONIC MUSIC ON THE RISE Electronic music as a genre has always experienced peaks and valleys. While it may not again reach the heady days of ’90s rave culture, there has been a rise in demand for both underground and mainstream electronic acts in North America for the last couple of years, and that should continue through 2012.

QUALITY WILL MATTER MORE THAN EVER Reliance on image and the cult of celebrity is not as strong as it once was; the quality of the actual music artists create has become more important than ever. Technology has created an environment in which all new music can be made extremely accessible. It has also created a public that is highly educated about music, and that has the ability to quickly broadcast opinions via various forms of social media. These factors combined create a situation in which truly great music can quickly reach a wide audience without relying on the dollar power of huge publicity campaigns.

eaturing woven, printed, carved and painted Coast Salish works, Victoria Collects: The Salish Weave Collection will open at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria on Jan. 6. Compiled by local couple George and Christiane Smyth, the exhibition will run as a companion to Victoria Collects (which opens in February). The Smyths’ collection took shape in the late ’90s, developing into one of the city’s most focused. Recognition of local artists is foremost in their approach to collecting and by lending to high profile galleries, including the National Gallery of Canada, they aim to give lesser-known talents widespread exposure. “They collect nothing but Coast Salish art because they really believe in it and feel that for too long it has not received the recog-

nition it deserves,” says AGGV Chief Curator, Mary Jo Hughes. “What they have done with the collection . . . is allowing contemporary Coast Salish artists and their artwork to be recognized locally and around the world.” Victoria Collects: The Salish Weave Collection includes 20 recent works by Canadian Coast Salish artists Susan Point, lessLIE, Maynard Johnny Jr., Dylan Thomas, John Marston, Luke Marston, Angela Marston and Chris Paul. It includes examples of carving, painting and printmaking representing the particular design elements, imagery, and narratives specific to Coast Salish traditions. The collections will be exhibited in the Drury Gallery through May 6, 2012. See aggv.ca for details. M

ferent culture. And lucky Geminis will be travelit through the first week; ling for pleasure – the so far so good. Personally, very best! (“Can I peel I can’t recall beginning you another grape?”) a New Year with such a desire to “turn over a new leaf.” I am totally gung-ho to improve my life! I CANCER have even typed out a little check list JUNE 21-JULY 22 of daily things. (God’s truth.) I think This is an interesting it’s due to the unusual journey of Mars week in terms of financin Virgo we’ve been experiencing for es, shared resources, weeks and weeks and weeks. (And GEORGIA gifts, inheritances, and it lasts until July!) Ah yes, Virgo is all NICOLS how you are handling about health, wellness and self-denial. shared property or even And Mars is, “Make it happen!” I know shared responsibilities I’m not alone. Others feel the same determiwith others. After the dust settles, by the nation to pull their act together. Many have end of the week, you should be coming out decided to eat better, get more exercise, ahead. Yay! It appears that someone is symmeditate and quit shooting up. Clap your pathetic to your needs (although in some hands if you believe in fairies! cases this will be reversed). This means gifts,

ll Signs: Well, we’ve made

ARIES MARCH 21-APRIL 19 Without question, you are busting thy buns at work or on your own private projects. (Who has more things on the go than you?) It might be wise to pace yourself because this frenzied determination to take control at work (and also to improve your health) is not going to let up. Oh no! This pace is going to last for months. (Until autumn.) Fortunately, this week just gets sweeter, friendlier and more popular as the days go by. Friendships will be tender and touching. (Some will be so touching, they’ll need to get a room.) Do keep your eyes peeled because either a friend or a group will directly or indirectly inspire you to boost your earnings. (This is totally possible.) Probably an aspect of generosity is involved. Therefore, be generous and be willing to receive as well.

TAURUS APRIL 20-MAY 20 Some of you might become involved romantically with your boss or someone older, richer or more experienced, while others will have a distant, far-off crush on someone like this. (Sigh.) Actually, a private crush can be quite a thrill. In addition, many of you will be asked to give your creative or artistic input on something. The powers that be want you to make something look more attractive. Say yes! Accept this challenge because you can do this. Who has a better appreciation of beauty than you? Whether it is art, food, drink, antiques, homes, land – you grok quality. You’re not snobbish about what you appreciate, you just like the best.

GEMINI MAY 21-JUNE 20 A lovely week! Your appreciation of beauty is definitely heightened, even more so as the week wears on. Therefore, give yourself a chance to enjoy beautiful places and beautiful things. Forget the leather bars – visit museums, art galleries, parks, university campuses, and gorgeous, architectural buildings. In the same vein (different arm), you’ll enjoy beautiful ideas and delight in intellectual banter about philosophy, religion and politics. (Smarty-pants Gemini.) Some of you will strike up a new romance with someone from another country or a dif-

goodies and favours are very likely to come your way. For others, this same astrological influence will sweeten sex in a charming, affectionate way. (Gosh.) Yes, we’re talking serious cuddles here. (Teddy ‘bare’ appeal?) All in all, you stand to benefit from someone else’s generosity. Sounds good to me

beautifully, especially by Friday. Sports and activities with children will elicit admiration, idealization and sympathy from some. This is a lovely week to be on vacation. Maybe you can fake a mini-vacation? Even a weekend or a one-day journey could be a jaunt that is fun for you and friends.)

SCORPIO OCT 3-NOV 21 Many events related to home, family and your domestic world gladden your heart this week, especially later in the week. Yes, you can have a puppy. Family relationships will be warm and tender and mutually caring. Some of you will feel this delightful feeling because you are introducing something beautiful to your home, perhaps a new purchase, or a new design or decorating idea. Whatever the source, you will enjoy and delight in your family and your home as this week wears on. You might admire someone in the family who shows compassion to others. The rotten apple in the barrel has a reverse manifestation: One angel in the home can make a huge difference!

is happening at home or within your family. Your ideals are aroused but they’re not off the wall. In fact, discussions with someone from another country or a different background are solid. A teacher or guru figure might enter your life. Perhaps your good fortune causes you to ponder profundity and entertain concepts that are philosophical, religious or worldly. Publishing, higher education, the media, medicine and the law are good avenues to explore now. Lucky you! Right now fair Venus is in your sign dancing beautifully with the other planets. This makes you charming, smooth, diplomatic, attractive and able to suck up so well.

PISCES FEB 19-MARCH 20 you. This also continues to be a challeng ing time with respect to friends and partners because, of course, Mars is still there oppo site your sign. The up side of this is that you are more inclined to demand your fair share and speak your mind if you’re unhappy. This week in particular, your sense of altruism is strong. You’re prepared to make sacrifices or put the needs and wants of others before your own because this is in accord with your ideals. The result will be that you will fee gratified and rewarded by your decisions. I always works that way. A rich person is no the one who has the most, but the one who needs the least. (Yeah, yeah — but it’s stil nice to shop.)

SAGITTARIUS NOV 22-DEC 21

LEO JULY 23-AUG 22 Relations with partners and close friends as well as relations with members of the general public will be unusually warm and gratifying this week. For many, this expression of affection will solidify things in the future in terms of expectations and commitment. (Oh my.) People in authority, especially people from other countries or from afar, might offer their endorsement of a relationship or close friendship you have. Travel plans with someone close (partner or close friend) might be hatched this week as well. If so, this will most certainly be travel for pleasure and, for some, a cruise. (Neptune is in the picture.) It’s a lovely, popular week for you!

VIRGO AUG 23-SEPT 22 Your sign is having all the fun vibes right now. (Mom always liked you best.) Romance, love affairs, vacations, the Arts, sports and playful activities with children are just some of the ways you are enjoying yourself. And you are enjoying yourself! The only downside is, do remember that while Mars is in your sign, you are coming on pretty strong! (Be nice to the little people.) Something very gratifying connected to your job will materialize this week. It could be a warm friendship or romance with a coworker; it could be a new job; it could be an opportunity to do volunteer work for those who need your help. Whatever happens will please you.

LIBRA SEPT 23-OCT 22 This is truly a romantic week for you! It might not start out that way but it certainly ends with some star-studded moments. New romance and love will stir some of you, no question. Others will reignite existing relationships. (Sexy lingerie is amazing, isn’t it?) Artists will be particularly productive and imaginative. In fact, all the arts will flourish

This can be a profitable week for writers, editors, teachers, actors, salespeople or anyone who wants to promote an idea. As this week progresses, your imagination will be increasingly heightened and your way with words will become stunningly diplomatic. Relations with siblings and neighbours will be warm and mutually beneficial. A new romance could spark from a casual daily encounter. Pay attention to your ideas about solidifying longterm goals. Your happy thoughts and conversations with others can give you a real practical outcome if you apply your new ideas to your goals. Talk about this with others, especially older or more experienced people.

CAPRICORN DEC 22-JAN 19 This is an interesting financial week for you. In one way, some of you might be quite extravagant. (Many of you love designer labels.) You will certainly be tempted, especially late in the week, to buy something elegant and impossibly gorgeous. Fortunately, some of you will see new ways of earning money that might be related to high fashion, luxury, shoes, or anything to do with the ocean, pharmaceuticals, gas, oil and paint. In fact, the hospitality industry and sports could be part of how you might boost your income as well. Some will use their money and wealth in a charitable way. Good! What goes around comes around.

AQUARIUS JAN 20-FEB 18 It’s so easy to be oh-so-charming this week, isn’t it? You’re happy with life and you feel enriched by whatever
