036 REPORT
VIDEO + VISUALS I fell in love with large-scale architectural projection design in 1995 when asked to illuminate a palace for an international multimedia festival, Arte Multi Visione, in Riati, Italy. The visual power of seeing images projected at five stories high by 150ft. wide sealed my fate. From there my passion was unstoppable. Coming from a professional background in music and photography, I found large-scale projection to be a fantastic means of communicating an idea in an entertaining way. People are amazed and delighted by the complex transformations of common environments into exotic virtual realities - which is now possible through large-scale architectural projection. Audio / visual technology has been used for decades to entertain. With the internet, we’ve become more attuned to visual information as a primary means of communication. Today’s technology has changed the art form a great deal. In the past, the projection of a single idea, not unlike a billboard, was only able to convey one concept or intention to the viewer. Today, the ability to layer moving visual dynamics with

music, graphics, text, animation, and photography makes more complex ideas and information possible - and is able to touch the audience more deeply. By heightening the AV dynamics of a rock concert, fashion show, special celebratory event, etc, in a collaborative and innovative way, you intensify the audience’s experience ‘within’ the event. They’ll remember it as something that they were not simply present for, but participated in. And that’s a much deeper form of communication. There is an inherent precision to advanced technology that demands accuracy in its use and preparation: flawless measurement of projection surfaces and distances; accurate multiple projector placement to diminish the erosion of colour and detail through ambient light sources; building designs from conception that make the best possible use of your hardware and software in any given situation. Still, technically proficient design is not effective without engaging content, relevant to both the client’s intent and the location’s architectural canvas. The most exceptional projections will always be credited to the imagination of its artists and designers, with

technology used to perfect the implementation of their ideas: saturated colours that pop, visual transitions that flow and lead the viewer more deeply into the experience. The ultimate objective is to take your audience somewhere that they’ve never been before. A symbiosis of technology and design is the key to great projections. For Warner Brothers International Television’s 2012 Upfront’s Party in Burbank, California in 2012, the Bartkresa design team employed 12 Christie’s Roadie HD+35K, Roadster S+20K, and Roadster HD18K projector models in tandem with 14 Watchout servers to transform WB’s well-known ‘New York’ lot, designed in the 1930s for those classic American gangster movies. The cobblestoned, urban American neighbourhood lined with brick brownstones became a neon-laced cocktail hour environment inspired by Tokyo’s Shinjuku district - that later transforms into an Afro-Asian world of Voodoo-laced debauchery. This intricately designed architectural projection covering 12 two-to-three-story buildings also included the animated capture of
a live-dancer projected in real time as a seductive goat-headed goddess nearly covering the height of one of the buildings. All of the projections were designed and choreographed to establish the event’s environment and narrative flow. Large-scale projections like this take time (WB was nearly two months in the planning) and an obsessive attention to detail, along with the right technical support. I’ve been fortunate to enjoy a long and sometimes collaborative relationship with Christie Digital projectors and Watchout servers, and they’ve become my go-to building blocks. But there are other large-scale projection manufacturers out there producing quality product as well. Different designers and projects have different needs. The key is to find the right tools for creating that seamless relationship between creativity and technology for you and your team. As a former professional musician, I have a great appreciation for creating live, singular experiences shared by members of an audience in a specific time and place. Unique and dynamic large-scale projections can create a sense of wonder,

NEW NATIONAL THE Tokyo, japan
asia/pacific/oceania Japan’s New National Theatre, Tokyo (NNTT) located in the Shinjuku area of Tokyo can arguably be described as the country’s most famous performing arts space. It was constructed in 1997 for the production of opera, ballet, contemporary dance and drama. The theatre operates under the management of the New National Theatre Foundation (NNTF) from the independent administrative institution The Japan Arts Council. Fukuchi Shigeo, President of NNTF said: “The New National Theatre has two major missions. The first is to continue to create world-class performances to present in Japan and abroad, while the second is to become a theatre that is widely enjoyed and loved by the people of Japan. We will strive to fulfil these missions and become a theatre

that the Japanese people will refer to with pride and affection, and that those abroad will look to with respect and admiration.” The performing arts venue has three halls of varying sizes to cater for every eventuality. The smallest of the three spaces is The Pit, a ‘black-box’ style theatre that can seat between 320 and 450, dependent on whether the room is set up for an end stage, a centre stage, a thrust stage or an arena stage. The Pit is ideal for intimate performances or theatre producers looking for a blank canvas in order to bring their vision alive. The Playhouse is the mid-sized stage and is capable of two distinct production styles - proscenium seating 1,038 or open apron seating 1,010 - equipping The Playhouse with two individual personalities. However, the largest theatre is the Opera House which has an 1,814-capacity, space for a 120-piece orchestra and four stages - rear, two sides and main - to offer ultimate flexibility. It was this space that was chosen for a recent audio upgrade, almost a decade after the theatre first opened its doors.
EATRE TOKYO Kunio Watanabe, who supervises sound and acoustics at NNTT, was tasked with the new audio design and specification in the Opera House. The foundations (fundamentals?) were already in place, thanks to the thick oak panelling on the walls and ceiling, which provide an excellent acoustical environment, so he set out on his search for an electronic sound reinforcement solution that would support the theatre’s top-level productions with the highest possible sound quality. Problems with the previous system included insufficient power and imbalance at certain listening points, Kunio was keen to eradicate those issues, as he explained: “Opera depends primarily on acoustic sound, but when there is a very quiet instrument such as a harpsichord or guitar in the orchestra, or when a chorus is positioned outside the main stage area, for example, the acoustic sound is sometimes not sufficient to achieve the desired balance or impact. In such cases we might use the proscenium speakers to reinforce the sound while paying careful attention to positioning within the sound field. The electronic sound system can be used to deliver sound effects as well. Kunio used an audition process in order to select the correct audio package. He began by testing a number of sound systems using a variety of sources - orchestra, chorus and
