19 WELCOME
t’s been a welcome change to begin to fill our diaries once again, particularly with the likes of ALSD International and World Football Summit - and the WFS Awards, too! - all around the corner. It’ll be great to catch up with everyone in the industry once again and, of course, get back to visiting sporting venues around the world. Our cover story for ISSUE 19 is the Xi’an Olympic Sports Center - a spectacular multipurpose complex that has seen state-of-the-art audio systems installed by EZPro, with technology from Powersoft, EAW, Allen & Heath and Symetrix. We’ve also covered an impressive project at Bell Centre, with PixMob using its latest NOVA pixel technology to light up the venue and create an incredible atmosphere, despite the limited capacity. Elsewhere, we spoke to FACES PROJECTS, who, along with PFL, completed an audio revamp at Olympisch Stadion in Antwerp. The home of K.Beerschot V.A. now boasts an audio system with technology from Powersoft, Martin Audio and Dynacord. Also, this issue’s Team Talk comes from SwipeStation’s CEO, Adam King, who discusses the challenges faced by stadiums when it comes to going cashless, while our Kick Off focusses on the world of comms, mics and bodypacks. I hope you enjoy ISSUE 19...

ANFIELD ROAD STAND Liverpool, England Rendering: KSS
SS’ latest project for Liverpool Football Club, the Anfield Road Stand expansion, recently received planning approval from Liverpool City Council. The proposal will increase the stadium’s capacity by around 7,000, taking Anfield’s overall capacity to more than 61,000. The designs work seamlessly with the Main Stand, which KSS completed for the club ahead of the 2016-17 season. Andy Hughes, Managing Director of Liverpool Football Club, said: “This is a huge milestone in our journey towards bringing more supporters into Anfield. We underwent a rigorous twostage public consultation period during the

planning process for this project and I would like to thank everyone who has offered a contribution to that. “In what has been a very unpredictable year, we are seeking certainty in order to progress with this project and there are still some steps we need to take to get there.” KSS Chairman, David Keirle, said “We are very proud that our third major project for Liverpool Football Club is making positive progress. After completing the award winning Main Stand in 2016 and the new AXA Training Centre last year, we are very pleased our vision for the Anfield Road Stand has been awarded planning permission.”

SHURE ADX5D PORTABLE RECEIVER Live events and broadcasting have depended on Shure to help capture and produce reliable audio. The debut of Shure’s Axient Digital Wireless System was popular within the industry, and, today, Axient Digital continues to serve as the standard for crystal-clear audio, RF spectrum stability, workflow control, and scalability. To help bring these wireless capabilities to new and existing Axient Digital customers, Shure has introduced the Axient Digital ADX5D Portable Receiver - a dual-channel, portable wireless slot receiver that provides superior RF performance, spectral efficiency, and transparent audio quality. The new portable form factor proudly enhances the Axient Digital ecosystem of wireless audio solutions. ADX5D was born from one simple need: how to translate the Axient Digital into a portable option. Shure understood there was an industry demand for wireless capabilities that addressed the needs of today’s production environments, and recognized that it needed to innovate in a way that would take Axient Digital beyond the stage, stadiums, and studio broadcast environments. ADX5D is ideal for environments like sports/events broadcasting, electronic news gathering (ENG), film/episodic television, and electronic field production (EFP)—all of which rely on quality location sound. The portable receiver supports the demand for a remote wireless solution that ensures the message is clearly delivered. “We designed the ADX5D Portable Receiver to incorporate the same innovative wireless technology that Axient Digital is known for, all in a portable form factor for professionals in the field or on-the-go,” said Nick Wood, Senior Wireless Category Director, Shure. “We took the time to ensure this new addition to the Axient Digital family exceeds the rigors of everyday use and lives up to Shure’s reputation for quality that we’ve earned over the past 96 years.” Whether a crew is broadcasting a weather report, offsite at a film shoot, or capturing the big game, ADX5D provides top-ofthe-line audio and performance. Professionals in film, TV, and ENG now have access to the same audio quality and next-level RF
performance that live sound professionals have trusted for years. Additionally, ADX5D is equipped with industry-proven highperformance RF technology, true digital diversity reception, and advanced digital audio technology – all packed into a portable slot form factor. True digital diversity technology helps significantly mitigate the potential for signal fades or interference that can cause dropouts. Further, it also supports wide dynamic range, AES-256 encryption, and 2ms latency from the mic transducer to the analog output. A wide tuning band ensures reliable operation in any environment. ADX5D functions as an on-the-go wireless receiver, offering the power and performance of Axient Digital - but in a portable form factor. It can easily slot inside and connect directly to the audio inputs of a professional broadcast camera, enabling streamlined connectivity of the two devices. The portability also provides convenience and flexibility, especially for film and TV sound mixers who often have discrete powering, audio-routing, and/or RFdistributing gear in their portable recording bags. ADX5D incorporates ShowLink, which is unique to Axient Digital, and allows for real-time control of all transmitter parameters, interference detection, and avoidance. Ideal for remote, hybrid, or on-location sound environments, ShowLink makes it easier to use back-up frequencies and provide remote control directly to the linked transmitters. Compatibility with Wireless Workbench supports efficient control and configuration, optimal spectrum management, and frequency coordination. ADX5D confidently fits into the entire Axient Digital ecosystem of hardware and software solutions from Shure. Regardless of the environment, flawless RF, exceptional audio quality, and system scalability are desired by today’s broadcast and film professionals. ADX5D naturally complements the existing solutions in Shure’s expansive portfolio, including AXT600 Spectrum Manager, Wireless Workbench, and all Axient Digital transmitters, including the ADX1M Micro Bodypack. www.shure.com/adx5d

QUANTUM5X COACHMIC The NBA has adopted wireless-systems manufacturer, Quantum5X’s new CoachMic for teams’ coaching staff. Functionally, the CoachMic is similar to Q5X’s PlayerMic, worn by NBA ballers and developed in concert with the league and player representatives. It was developed with input from the league, coaches, broadcasters ESPN and Turner Sports, and Bexel, which purchased them, rents them to the broadcasters, and manages their RF. The transmitter, officially known as the Q5X-AD10 Digital CoachMic, is paired with a Sennheiser MKE-2 microphone capsule and is compatible with Shure’s Axient Digital receivers. Operationally, the CoachMic shares key capabilities with the PlayerMic, such as the ability to be remotely controlled and monitored by the Q5X QG-H2 MicCommander; such functions as gain, battery life, on/off, and frequency choice can be accessed from anywhere in the venue during games. In addition, the transmitter has a rocker-type mute switch that can be accessed by the wearer and is designed to offer both visual and tactile confirmation of microphone on/off status, either by the colour of an LED next to the switch or by the feel of the switch’s position, whether it’s worn horizontally on a belt or vertically in a jacket pocket. Previously, the NBA’s coach broadcast audio was captured and transmitted by a mix of manufacturers’ systems - all digital - to ensure encryption and to maintain RF agility in a spectrum-constrained environment. “We worked closely with all parties on the design and execution of the CoachMic, starting during the NBA’s Summer League in 2019,” said Q5X CEO, Paul Johnson. “It went through several iterations, from conceptual to working models to the production models that Bexel has acquired for use by
RTS ROAMEO
the league and that were introduced at the 2020 All-Star Game.” He adds that the NBA has been using the original QT-1000 PlayerMic nearly since its introduction in 2007, with its first deployment at the All-Star Game that year, and the current, smaller QT-5100 PlayerMic S since it was introduced at the 2014 All-Star Game. “And now they have a Q5X solution across the players and the coaches and, sometimes, on the referees as well,” Paul said, noting that some officials have been trying them out for televised games. “That consistency of audio equipment lends itself to keeping the sound quality high.” www.q5x.com
ROAMEO from RTS is a professional, easy-to-use and future-proof wireless intercom solution based on the license-free DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) standard with a protected frequency band. It provides highquality audio over a seamlessly integrated digital wireless beltpack and associated access points. Featuring a modern, rugged design, ROAMEO is suitable for a wide range of professional intercom applications where wireless communication is critical, including sports event production and outside broadcast (OB) trucks. Operating like a wireless keypanel, ROAMEO can be fully integrated into all existing wired digital RTS matrices. The system allows users to address either individuals or specified groups. The system consists of the TR-1800 beltpack, the AP-1800 access point and accessories including charger, holster and pole-mount kit. Connection to a digital matrix is easily established via a single Ethernet cable. In addition, the system can use standard IT infrastructure, which ensures easy installation and low maintenance costs; the access points can be daisy-chained. ROAMEO’s cellular structure can cover a wide area with superior audio and seamless roaming between the individual cells. Users can easily expand the coverage area by adding further access points, while additional wireless beltpacks can be directly addressed as part of a wired RTS matrix intercom system. Depending on the audio codec used, users can select between a higher emphasis on voice quality (G.722 full bandwidth) or a more efficient use of the radio spectrum with a higher number of beltpacks (G.726 narrow-band). ROAMEO provides a superior user experience - the system can be easily configured in a multi-language set-up via scroll lists on the beltpacks or using the control software, which allows users to configure the complete intercom system on one screen. Thanks to its large colour LED-display and intuitive icon-based menu structure, the beltpack is very easy to set up and operate. The four talk/listen buttons are shaped differently and provide users with a tactile feedback; the operation of the device is thus possible also in low light conditions and without the need to look at it. With its lightweight, durable housing, the beltpack features the smallest enclosure in its class and is protected against dust and light rain. The ROAMEO system is an environmentally friendly system without any dangerous emissions at low radiation. It is compliant with the US environmental regulation N33.6. www.rtsintercoms.com

RIEDEL COMMUNICATIONS 2021 WIMBLEDON CHAMPIONSHIPS Riedel Communications recently announced that the All-England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) has installed a fixed signal routing and communications network based on Riedel’s MediorNet real-time signal transport and processing technology, and Artist digital matrix intercom mainframe. Relying on Riedel solutions for over a decade, the AELTC has steadily expanded its Riedel infrastructure, with the 2021 Wimbledon Championships marking the biggest-ever deployment on the prestigious tournament grounds. As the oldest tennis tournament in the world, The Championships have been held by the AELTC since 1877 and are one of the four Grand Slam tournaments in professional tennis. For the 2021 tournament, the MediorNet/ Artist solution facilitated remote audio mixing to support communications between; review officials and umpires, statisticians, safety, security, audio, and production teams, as well as video feeds to aid the audio team with press feed distribution and remote operation of all courts. While the basic network remains in place year-round at AELTC, Riedel Managed Technology was brought in to supply the additional panels, nodes, and other gear necessary to support tournament play at 18 different courts over the 14 days of Wimbledon. “Wimbledon is steeped in tradition, but we’re certainly not standing still. We’re always looking to stay on the edge of technology and apply the latest innovations to make the Championships the best they can possibly be,” said Brew - James Henry Breward, Audio and Communications Specialist, AELTC. “We know we can count on Riedel equipment to provide seamless, reliable communications with fantastic sound quality when it really matters, such as when resolving debatable review calls. And with all of the additional equipment that comes in quickly for the Championships, we absolutely depend on Riedel’s Managed Technology division to help us meet our tight timeframes. Their expert service and support, together with their ability to
020

access additional gear as needed at a moment’s notice, make them invaluable partners in our fast-paced run-up to Wimbledon.” The permanent Riedel installation at AELTC consists of an Artist-64 intercom node and a handful of 2300 SmartPanels to support year-round security and audio teams. In the run-up to the 2021 Wimbledon tournament, Riedel Managed Technology division expanded the fixed infrastructure with an extensive array of additional Artist and MediorNet equipment, including MediorNet MicroN high-density media distribution network devices, around 120 intercom panels, and Bolero, offering coverage over much of the grounds. With their ability to be deployed in unlimited configurations, the modular MicroNs came in handy particularly in the AELTC master control room, the nerve centre for all audio signals, where the signals from the 18 courts, big screen production, and countless local mixes come together. Additional MicroNs configured with the Riedel MultiViewer App were located in the Centre Court PA rack room. This enabled the production crew in master control to mix audio signals from up to 36 SDI broadcast and MADI feeds from Artist, house audio, OB comms four-wires, and program feeds. Even people who have never used key panels - not all tennis events are able to offer this level of technology support - are able to integrate them instantly into their workflows. hen construction began on the Xi’an Olympic Sports Center, home of China’s 14th National Games, officials wanted the modern venue to feature a state-of-the-art audio system that would give every seat a memorable experience. With help from
pro audio distributor, EZPro International, officials found the solution they were looking for in products from EAW, Powersoft, Allen & Heath and Symetrix. Completed in July 2020 with a total build cost of $1.12 billion, the Center occupies an area of 866,667 sq metres and houses three distinct venues: a 60,000-seater athletics stadium with track and field facilities, a gymnasium capable of seating 18,000 people, and a swimming and diving hall that accommodates 4,000 spectators. After the 14th National Games draw to a close, the centre will transition to hosting international sports events, exhibitions and conferences in addition to acting as a multifunction sports centre for nearby cities and towns.

uilt in 1982, Maaspoort Sports and Events, located in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands, is more than just an indoor arena, it’s a unique, multifunctional facility suited to host a wide array of events. The venue offers two meeting
rooms, a sports bar, and a diverse and flexible arena area that can be used for a variety of events from sports to concerts. The arena itself provides a seating capacity of 3,500 people for sports events and 4,000 people for concerts. Maaspoort is also home to the most successful basketball club in The Netherlands, the Heroes Den Bosch. As a member of the Dutch Basketball League, this championship record-breaking team regularly plays at this spectacular venue. This indoor sports facility also hosts different sport activities such as badminton, tennis and gymnastics. In addition to the main arena, Maaspoort also offers two meeting rooms and a sports bar - all three areas can be opened up creating one large space or reconfigured to suit specific event needs. This flexibility meant the lighting and audio systems within the venue needed to be robust and flexible enough to support a variety of occasions. As the audiovisual partner of record, Unlimited Vision and Sound, also located in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, understood what Maaspoort was working to achieve and knew they would develop the perfect solution with Bose Professional and Color Kinetics products. “Unlimited Vision and Sound was already our main supply partner; they were our go-to resource if we needed to hire audio and related technology for a variety of different events,” said Remco van der Pot, Manager at Maaspoort Sports and Events. “We are always very satisfied with their support and partnership, so when we decided on a new audio and lighting solution to support all the different events, we naturally asked them to

Steven Kemland, Manager at FACE PROJECTS, spoke to MONDO | STADIA about how the project first began for his team: “We were actually contacted by a dealer about this project around 10 years ago, but, as often happens, it didn’t come to anything for many reasons. Then, ten years later, we had the same request for a new audio system at the venue, so I had the information and images from my initial visit, which allowed us to make an offer.

Although the technical design was completed by FACE PROJECTS on behalf of PFL, both teams worked together on installing the new setup, and support and maintenance will be followed up solely by PFL. With the new audio system in place, Beerschot are ready for the new season and, eventually, a stadium packed out with fans. “The stadium won’t be at full capacity until September, but everyone at the smaller capacity games so far has been really happy with the new system,” Steven added. “The club are delighted with the finished result and how it is working – we made it very easy to operate. Overall, this has been a great project and all of us are very proud with what we’ve achieved.”

SECURE LOGIQ As venues finally start to reopen their doors for the first time in nearly two years, surveillance technology will be under serious pressure. Storage is a vital element for security systems and ensuring every component is in optimum condition can be the difference between welcoming fans through the turnstiles and not. www.securelogiq.com
ith many stadia now starting to open their doors to large crowds again, their security and surveillance systems are going to be used to their full capacity for the first time in the best part of two years. These systems will have been operational during that time, but not driven to their full capability. Every component of these solutions is vital to the smooth operation of a match day, and any failure can be catastrophic. However, some elements are easier to check and maintain than others. The most obvious element of any surveillance system is the cameras, with literally hundreds of these dotted around every part of a stadium. Every camera feed can be checked manually ahead of time and any problem assessed and fixed. At the other end of the scale, one element that is harder to test but just as vital is the storage solution for the CCTV feeds. “There is nothing more data intensive than video, other than multiple streams of HD video,” explained Robin Hughes from Secure Logiq, a UK-based manufacturer of servers designed specifically for the demands of the surveillance industry. “In a stadium application, you are talking about hundreds of these streams from every area of the venue. That is a huge amount of data, and with storage retention times running from 30 days typically up to six months and longer in some regions, it’s little wonder that stadium surveillance systems have traditionally required racks of dedicated servers just to keep up with the demand.” However, this concept is changing. As technology has advanced, the amount of data you can store on hard drives and servers has risen exponentially. For example, you can now find servers with storage capacity measured in Petabytes. This means that you can now meet the performance and storage needs of a stadium CCTV system with much fewer servers. “We recently worked with an integrator on a football stadium project where we helped to upgrade the storage capacity for their surveillance
W

system,” recalled Robin. “Five or six years had passed since the initial installation and the main hardware components of the CCTV system were fine as things like the cameras and video management system had been constantly upgraded to the latest firmware. But by looking purely at the servers, we were able to give them six times more storage and processing while reducing the amount of physical units from 12 servers to just two. In addition to this, the upgrade gave them massive improvements in recoding, viewing, power saving and saving rack space.” The significant reduction in servers provides a reduction in the total cost of ownership for a surveillance system, meaning system redundancy can easily be added and IT-centric monitoring tools should be deployed. “Regardless of the build quality of a server, over a long enough timeline some component failures are inevitable,” Robin explained. “Hopefully most enterprise CCTV applications will have some resilience built in, but the importance of monitoring the health of these systems can not be underestimated.” The way that Secure Logiq’s customers can do this is with the manufacturer’s Logiqal Healthcheck Pro solution – a CCTV-centric cloudbased hardware monitoring and alerting utility. The system was designed to monitor critical components in Secure Logiq hardware and raise an alert in the event that something unexpected was occurring. It offers a complete suite of management tools that enable integrators to ensure, at a glance, their global customer CCTV estates are secure, optimised and fully operational at all times. Visual confirmation based around a simple to understand traffic light system confirms the operational status of every customer site. This can be displayed either as icons or shown live on a map and allows the security network and server hardware to be monitored from a single screen. Using this kind of monitoring tool means that any issues that are detected can be dealt with during quieter periods, rather than putting matchday
operations at risk. “Pre-emptive maintenance can reduce the need for emergency call outs and, when managed effectively, can eliminate unforeseen downtime on a security system something that is particularly important for a matchday,” stated Robin. “For instance, a high temperature for the server would not present any immediate risk to the overall solution. However, if unaddressed for a period of time it could potentially lead to a system or component overheating which in turn increases the possibility of critical server failure. By monitoring the situation, the problem can be resolved during a quiet period for the stadium, rather than creating a potential security incident when there are 40,000 people waiting to come through the gates.” A further reason to keep existing solutions in a good working order is the current global scarcity of the components required for building servers. “There is currently a large supply gap for silicon chips that every industry is feeling right now,” said Robin. “But further to this, different forms of mining for cryptocurrencies also means there is a shortage of GPUs and hard drives. Those that are available are at massively inflated prices, so replacing damaged equipment currently could be an expensive option. Having monitored the situation closely and seen the trend, we have stocked up in advance and Secure Logiq is currently using every means available to source new hard drives and GPUs to make sure we continue our record of supplying every project within 10 days.” The combination of the increased pressure put on CCTV solutions as stadia welcome sell-out crowds again and the reduction in the availability of components means system maintenance has never been more critical. Monitoring the health of your servers means you can prevent problems from occurring and keep your crowd safe and secure at all times.
