continues! In ISSUE 22, we have Burnley Football Club’s historic home of Turf Moor as our cover story. We took the trip up to the iconic ground in January with ADI, who have delivered a truly impressive digital transformation throughout the whole stadium. It was great to get real insight into the project from the team, as well as The Clarets’ Chairman, Alan Pace. Check out the feature on page 26. Elsewhere, we’ve covered Clear-Com’s work on the National Paralympic Games in Indonesia, as well as Aggreko’s range of projects in UAE and Saudi Arabia, in which they’ve provided sustainable power for the huge golfing events out there. In this issue’s Kick Off, there’s a focus on video, visuals and digital signage that’s definitely worth looking out for, while our Team Talk is from Henderson Engineers’ Ryan Starkovich who discusses the company’s extensive work on the very special SoFi Stadium - the host to Super Bowl LVI! I hope you enjoy ISSUE 22... Sam Hughes Editorial Director

THE CATHEDRAL Milan, Italy Image: Populous

C Milan and FC Internazionale Milano have announced that Populous’ project – named ‘The Cathedral’ – has been selected for their new stadium. The next weeks will be dedicated to finalising the objectives and development process of Milan’s New Stadium. The decision, announced by Comune di Milano, will see a reconfiguration of the area in the San Siro neighbourhood, currently occupied by the Meazza Stadium, through the creation of a new district dedicated to sport and leisure. The new district will include a new 50,000 sqm green area, on top of a reduction of built volumetry, in line with the latest regulations (as regulated by Piano di Governo del Territorio). The district will be pedestrian-only, with over 110,000 sqm of green areas (40% of the total square footage). The parking lot, which represents 40% of the total area in the current situation, will be moved to a dedicated underground area. Most of the sport and leisure activities – located both indoors and outdoors – will be free of charge or financed by the city. Following the decision, the clubs sped up the process to finalise their agreement with Populous and kick off the next phase of the project, which will be carried out in the next months with the aim to present a final project at a later stage in 2022. The new San Siro was designed by Populous’ Milan office with the support of their EMEA team in London. A multidisciplinary team will lead the project, which is set to increase the opportunities and services offered to the residents with an improvement in the quality of the urban fabric of the neighbourhood. The Cathedral is a celebration of the artistic and cultural heritage of Milan. Its design was inspired by two of the most notorious buildings of the city – the Duomo di Milano and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele – and will result in a unique stadium that will stand out from any

other sport arena in the world. The Cathedral is set to offer a ground-breaking arena in terms of innovation and sustainability. The new stadium, surrounded by a large green area, will be carbon neutral and LEED-certified, thanks to the use of the most innovative materials and cutting-edge technologies in terms of water and electricity usage, as well as noise control. Accessibility and user experience will also be outstanding, offering unprecedented safety, comfort, vision quality and range of services to the public. AC Milan and FC Internazionale Milano have confirmed their desire to deliver an outstanding project, which generates new job opportunities, regenerates a key urban area in the city and offers a new green area of over 50,000 sqm to the residents. The project aims to consolidate and improve the image of the City of Milan and of Italian football. “The new San Siro aims to become the most beautiful stadium in the world for its strong identity and recognisability. An attractive arena, accessible and sustainable for the city of Milan that will facilitate the growth of the clubs and their global competitiveness,” commented Paolo Scaroni, President at AC Milan. Alessandro Antonello, Corporate CEO at FC Internazionale, added: “The New Stadium of Milan will be in an extra-contemporary green area that can be lived all year round. The new district for sport and leisure and its 50,000sqm park will make San Siro the goto neighbourhood for sport and entertainment.” Christopher Lee, Managing Director – EMEA, Populous, concluded: “The Cathedral will become one of the most iconic stadiums in world football. It will create a world-class, modern, and truly bespoke home for the legendary clubs of AC Milan and FC Internazionale Milano and form the beating heart of a new civic district. It will be a stadium for all Milanese to enjoy for generations to come that is true to the city and honours its heritage. A stadium of Milano and for Milano.”

KICK OFF | VIDEO, VISUALS & DIGITAL SIGNAGE A closer look at products and projects from the world of video, visuals and digital signage.

VITEC COLIN FARQUHAR, SVP OF SALES, VITEC Engage, Empower and Evolve – Elevating the Fan Experience Colin Farquhar, Senior Vice President, VITEC, explains how stadia and sports venues can take the fan experience to the next level with IPTV, streaming video and digital signage solutions. As fans around the world are once again increasingly able to enjoy the buzz of ‘full houses’ and atmospheric spectacles at large sporting occasions, a renewed focus on the live sports experience is underway. Close attention to detail regarding the fans’ overall time spent at stadia and sports venues is essential to maximising both visitor enjoyment and business potential. Now is the time for venues to capitalise on audiences seeking out exciting sporting occasions, the likes of which have been scarce in recent years due to public health measures. Thankfully, there are now more technologies than ever in our toolkit to engage, empower and evolve the experience for fans. IPTV, streaming and digital signage solutions can harness the power of video to captivate audiences, drive revenue and ensure an engaging integrated experience – from the moment fans arrive until long after the final whistle (or buzzer) has blown. IPTV for flexible, scalable and secure viewing With IPTV, in-house distribution solutions can leverage an IT network to take live TV streams from terrestrial, satellite IP, cable,

012

or internal channels and make them available throughout a venue, to be displayed on any desired number of end-points. This enables the delivery of high-quality, live-action TV plus news and sports programming throughout, delivering high-quality entertainment for fans. The combination of live TV and video can be complemented with digital signage displaying visitor information, sponsors’ adverts and announcements, making for a compelling package to boost engagement. At Goodwood, the host of the Festival of Speed and the Goodwood Revival upgraded to an end-to-end IP video and digital signage system to deliver live feeds from the track alongside TV channels to 150 screens across the venue. The system enables Goodwood to maximise the fan experience during its high-profile horse racing, motor racing, golf, flying and shooting events to make sure no one misses out on the action. As a flexible and scalable system, an IPTV distribution solution can also grow with further requirements to futureproof. At the prestigious Lord’s Cricket Ground, our IPTV solution played a key role in the upgrade of the Warner Stand. Live TV and digital signage was added throughout the area, including bar and catering spaces and the match control facility. Venue staff can quickly and efficiently add more screens anywhere on the network, presenting a consistent message across the site. The

KICK OFF

fully HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) compliant system allows staff to schedule or update signage screens remotely, providing a significant long-term benefit to the venue. Streaming at Stadia More fans than ever are expecting Wi-Fi and video streaming before, during and after the game, with connectivity playing a key role in the matchday experience. With the latest video streaming solutions, venues can create video channels from existing content and stream them around the venue on any device. In the US at the Kauffman Stadium – home to Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals – a reliable, high quality, low-latency stream implemented to further enhance a much-heralded fan experience with both IPTV distribution and digital signage capabilities. Replacing failing, ageing media players at the beloved ballpark, the new VITEC system manages any type of video content, including streams generated by third-party encoders. Fans have been treated to fresh, eye-catching digital signage content as well as much-improved video quality for game-day feeds – all delivered with low latency – as they walk around the concourse. At German Bundesliga club, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, streaming encoders and media players are integrated into the system to enable Fan-TV to be streamed from the stadium and live events to set top boxes that are connected to every screen in VIP areas. The central management of the system allows the correct content to be delivered to the correct screen. Signalling the benefits with Digital Signage Digital Signage has a key role to play in conveying information

and promotional content in an engaging way, as well as driving additional revenue. At the Matmut Stadium de Gerland in France, home to Lyon Olympique Universitaire Rugby (LOU Rugby), digital signage is used throughout, including at the LOU Shop, the VIP lounges and event halls. A digital signage solution – in addition to a full end-to-end IP video installation – has enabled the venue to provide interactive information and promotion about new merchandise, upcoming games and other events, as well as the local weather forecast and public transport timetables to keep fans informed. The stadium’s main reception area is also used to host an array of events from seminars to cocktail receptions, gala dinners and tradeshows. The digital signage in this space can be customised for each client event, allowing corporate guests to enjoy a personalised experience and complement sound, lighting and other solutions used to turn the venue into an impressive and immersive environment. A Win/Win Live sporting events throw up unique unscripted drama, and fans give them power and meaning with their passion. By using the latest IPTV technologies, we can enhance these experiences, add value to the fans and even open additional revenue-generating opportunities – a win/win in anyone’s book. It’s a great time to take a close look at what venues can offer fans, and ensure we can deliver high standards of experience away from the sporting action to match the memorable spectacles themselves. www.vitec.com

The high-resolution perimeter system will create a powerful channel through which to activate brand partnerships and drive revenue. Since acquiring ownership of Wycombe Wanderers in 2020, club chairman and chief executive, Rob Couhig, has been determined to invest in the club and reward fan’s loyalty with an incredible matchday experience. The new LED screen and perimeter system will play a large part in helping the club to achieve those ambitions. As well as being able to deliver live match content, the club will be able to use the screen to keep fans up to date with match stats, team line ups, social media content and much more. The new perimeter system will also enhance the stadium, offering a hugely powerful platform for the club’s commercial partners to reach fans and the wider TV viewing audience. KICK OFF PIONEER GROUP THE KIA OVAL Surrey Cricket Club is one of England’s oldest and most prestigious cricket clubs, taking residence at the iconic Oval ground in South London since establishment in 1845. The ground has always boasted a reputation as one of the UK’s top venues to watch cricket, and ticket sales generated from repeated hosting of domestic and international games have resulted in Surrey Cricket’s lucrativeness as a club. To ensure this is maintained, the ground needs to consistently remain at the forefront of innovation, providing spectators with the best possible experience – it is famously noted for illuminating the game with the first use of artificial lighting at a sports arena in the form of gas-lamps. The venue now has capacity for 25,300 spectators and has undergone constant redevelopment throughout the 21st century. In 2005, the north stands were replaced by the now famous 1845 stand, a sweeping four-tiered grandstand, offering great vantage points for all spectators and world-class corporate hospitality. This stand significantly helped Surrey CCC elevate its position as a leading sports venue and soon became a popular conference and events destination. Important sponsorship deals – the main one being with Kia Motors, hence the naming right, has played a key part in driving revenue for the club and the sweeping design of the 1845 stand lent itself to advertising and brand awareness. Each tier of the 1845 stand is currently used for these purposes. This year Surrey Cricket decided to maximise usage of the top tier, by installing LED to provide the ultimate platform for showcasing content, advertising and improving fan experience. The club has had mixed success with mid-tier LED products in the past and had been actively looking for a solution that combined reliability, robust pixel longevity and excellent content delivery. Because of the precarious location of the display, mounted on a concrete balustrade above three other levels and 20m off the ground, there were obvious challenges with installation, not to forget preventing disruption to the club’s ever growing conferencing and hospitality business. Finding a short window to fit the product was challenging, previous installations were cumbersome, untidy and were distracting to spectators watching from balcony behind. Speed of install was therefore a factor to be considered, with the hectic calendar of back-to-back games, stadium work needs to be done quickly and with minimum impact to operations. The club’s previous technical investment needed to be taken into account when integrating the solution, as the upper-tier LED was not the first display system within the ground. There are a multitude of screens currently in place, used for displaying varying content, all connected to the same IPTV network. From a logical point of view, the decision was made to use the existing infrastructure for content delivery of the new upper-tier system. The club enlisted Pioneer Group to devise the ultimate digital signage solution for the upper-tier 1845 stand largely due to their experience and expertise in stadium LED experience - especially within the cricket environment, having previously completed work

020

at Emirates Old Trafford. As the tier’s balcony had previously been used for static advertising, attention to the concrete balustrade’s inner infrastructure had been unnecessary. However with the weight of LED, considerations needed to be made regarding the reinforced steel rebar which supports the concrete. Engineers therefore needed to scan the framework to locate the inner support system, so as to avoid affecting the structural integrity of the concrete. Interfacing Pioneer Group’s own ultra-high bright p10 LED, a simple rear support system was fixed into the concrete to support the total 76 cabinets, which make up the 80 meter banner, covering the entire surface of the upper-tier. This was then tested, commissioned and connected to the club’s IPTV network. The system, approved by the English Cricket Board, was innovatively designed with ongoing maintenance in mind. In order to reduce the time taken to make repairs and to avoid the whole display being affected by pixel failure, the system is made up of individual cartridges with access at the top of each unit, which can easily be lifted out. Each cartridge is ‘hotswappable’ meaning they can be exchanged, should a fault arise, with the power on, even in the middle of a game. Charlie Hodgson, Managing Director at Surrey County Cricket Club, stressed the importance of the new system and what it means to the club: “We are very pleased with the new mid-tier LED installation, as a club we continue to invest in modernising the ground and are proud to combine some truly iconic architecture with modern technology. The LED helps us to give spectators a great match day experience and helps the club stay ahead of the curve as cricket enters a new era. Fans expect much more when they come to a game of cricket and the mid-tier LED helps us deliver a fantastic experience with maximum crowd engagement.” “We have been hugely impressed with Pioneer Group’s dedication and quality of work. Given the difficult location and short-time frame to complete the project to have reliable and robust mid-tier LED is fantastic, we are looking forward to continuing to best utilise the opportunities for fan engagement and commercial sponsorship that is now available to us.” pioneergroup.co.uk

ome to Burnley Football Club since 1883, making it the second-longest continuously used ground in English professional game, Turf Moor is an iconic part of football culture. With its capacity of 21,994,

it’s a stadium woven into the fabric of the community, offering fans the traditional match-going experience. With new owners in place, there are long-term plans to build on this incredible tradition, using technology to enhance Turf Moor and the club as a whole, all while paying close attention to what makes Burnley FC and its home special to football fans around the world. With this in mind, the club have entered a partnership with the global leaders in LED technology, ADI. With over 30 years of experience in LED technologies, creative content services and event production, ADI have been tasked with delivering a huge digital makeover at Turf Moor in line with the club’s ambitious plans. Burnley FC Chairman, Alan Pace, discussed his vision for the club with MONDO | STADIA: “We’re very aware that the world has changed in terms of fan experience and how signage and displays work in that area. walls within the Chairman’s Suite and Media Room. Claire Fitzgerald-Firth, Head of Client Engagement at ADI, explained the benefits of working with Burnley FC: “The club definitely had an idea of what they wanted, so, with our experience, we know what works well and what doesn’t, that collaborative relationship was really natural. “From that initial vision, we went around the stadium and made suggestions on the different areas that could be digitised. We’re really lucky with Burnley – they’re really receptive to ideas. There is a real passion towards enhancing the stadium for the fans first and foremost, as well as adding value to the commercial platform, which is important for the club.” The installation features full connectivity to ADI’s Live Venue network, allowing match day content to be created and managed remotely from their European Production Hub in Preston, without the requirement for the installation of production studio infrastructure at Turf Moor. The connectivity carries a myriad of content, data and telemetry all designed to enhance the fan experience and bolster the commercial offering of the club. Importantly, all platforms will be fully integrated, allowing the club to share news, information, and updates immediately with supporters across all branding touchpoints. The new signage is also used to communicate safety information and provide important travel updates and other practical advice for supporters. ADI’s Head of Technical Operations, Craig Jenkins, explained further: “We’ll typically operate everything on a match day, but then the club also have the ability to manage all different types of content on the screen themselves. I think this is where the value lies for the club – we’ve delivered one platform on which we can deliver anything they want throughout the screens in the stadium. “There’s even the option to do a Total Stadium Takeover – the impact of the club or a particular brand being driven onto every screen throughout the ground is very effective.” Alan added: “The really cool thing that we love about the system is the ability to quickly change things with a couple of keystrokes. I feel that’s really important as it gives our staff a real

opportunity in terms of what they can and want to do. It’s like a blank canvas for them to be really creative and find out what works.” With everything coming from ADI’s European Production Hub, the operation is much more streamlined on match day at Turf Moor, as Craig explained further: “We have a couple of people on site – technicians ensuring everything is working well and engineers checking cameras. The club don’t have 20-odd people on site doing all this as they’re all at the hub in Preston. “This is hugely beneficial as a huge space facing the pitch isn’t needed for the digital operation – and it’s those type of spaces that are vital for the club’s commercial side.” Geraint Williams, CEO at ADI, added: “It’s great to see the new owners at Burnley FC have such ambition to invest in the stadium. These are decisions taken with the long view in mind and will help to add huge value to the match day experience for fans as well as the club partners not just this season but for years to come. “Consolidating all of these platforms with a single supplier delivers huge benefits to Burnley, both operationally and commercially. Whilst most clubs have very fragmented digital platforms with multiple operators and disparate

After Hull Stingrays had to file for bankruptcy in 2015, the Olympic ice rink was used for leisure and semi-professional ice skating for a few years until the arena was temporarily closed in March 2020 and renovated for a seven-figure sum. In addition to a new ice rink and renovated changing rooms and toilet facilities, the Hull Ice Arena has recently also been lit up in new sound and light. Lighting JRG Productions fully relied on the all-rounder capabilities of the Cameo FLAT PRO 7 G2 RGBWA LED spotlights to illuminate the ice rink. The IP65 rated fixtures were specifically selected to provide the venue with a long term, reliable installation within what can be a wet and humid environment. The spotlights distributed throughout the hall are controlled via the Cameo DVC Pro software and can be controlled individually if required. This allows individual areas to be illuminated separately, as well as creating dynamic beam and chase effects for concerts or ice skating events. “The operational team have been particularly impressed with the DVC software. They are now able to produce their own scenes and chases for special events in house, without the need to recruit specialist lighting contractors,” added Jason. JRG Solutions used solutions from Adam Hall Cables and Riggatec rigging hardware for the installation and cabling of loudspeakers, spotlights and peripheral devices.

ggreko is the global leader in temporary power, heating and cooling, delivering the infrastructure for sporting events across the world. The company strive to set the standard for the next generation, offering power generation that’s efficient, clean and

reliable as possible. Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship 2022 European Tour was keen to deliver a world-class event to outline the aims and ambitions of The Rolex Series for the rest of the year, with the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship being the first tournament of the season. This year, one of the main brief’s from European Tour was the importance of using greener technology, with the overall aim being to keep carbon emissions as low as possible. To achieve this, European Tour enlisted the help of Aggreko, who were able to deliver on the brief by using B20 biodiesel to run all generators at the event, as well as using a 45kw battery powerbank – for the first time in the UAE - to supply the Sky Studios. Aggreko provided 23 gensets and 10 fuel tanks, which reduced carbon emissions and improved sustainability across the event. Despite the overall success, there were challenges for the Aggreko team to overcome. Stephen Sideserf, Events Technician, explained further: “The main challenges that were faced this year were the access in and around the course. This was the first year that the event had taken place at Yas Links, with the tournament having previously been played at Abu Dhabi Golf Club since 2006. “With it being a new course, this meant a new layout and different ideas from the client as per what we normally used to for the previous years. This caused some tricky challenges trying to get generators and kit in the locations required by the client, including having to cross the fairways with forklifts and closing off the main entrance to be able to use a 100 tonne crane to place four generators two 1000gl fuel tanks. “All this was, of course, carried out while following all Aggreko QHSE rules and policies. All work planned to cause as little disruption as possible to the client and to the golf course itself. This included scheduling crane work to be done in the evenings or mornings and placing the difficult generator locations at times when the course would not be in use. “Extra precautions were always taken so as to not cause any damage to the golf course in any shape or form.” Martin Nichol, Regional Events Manager MENA added: “I was glad to be able to work on such a prestigious event and enjoyed working with the new green technology, which Aggreko is starting to introduce to the fleet. “I was also pleased that the event ran smoothly - and we were able to deliver on time without any major issues during the event and install. “The fact that the European Tour team were also delighted with the work carried out in a short timescale meant it was a great experience overall – and we’re looking forward to delivering again next year!” Slync.IO Dubai Desert Classic For this event, Aggreko were enlisted to provide suitable and efficient power solutions for the entire site, which included: 9th/18th green main hospitality structure; Marshalls compound; TV compound; entertainment village; player lounge and driving range bar; European Tour office; Royal Majlis; Garden Majlis; 4th hole screens, 18th green jumbo screen; and the 15th green

KAPPTURE The leading provider of EPOS and Mobile Payment software in stadia, education, retail, and hospitality industries. evelopment-centric, positioned as an innovation leader, and supported by recent investment by Renatus Capital Partners, Kappture’s in-house development team are driving exciting plans to grow the solution offering yet further. Since taking Kappture to market in 2014, well over 10,000 POS installations across 100+ clients in the UK, Ireland, UAE, and Western Europe have successfully been installed with the marketleading EPOS software. Kappture offer four main hardware types; traditional fixed EPOS, all-in-one POS & payments devices, tablets, and self-service kiosks. We pride ourselves on being hardware agnostic, with ability to load the software onto any device, on multiple operating systems (Linux, Windows, iOS and Android), with all the same great features. The K1 terminal is our leading fixed EPOS terminal. Sleek in design, robust against daily use and spillage, its heavy aluminium base provides excellent stability for the terminal to be used in a variety of settings from stadium concourses to fine dining without looking out of place. Its built-in, customer-facing screen utilises our specifically tailored K-Vision module, enabling our clients to run and manage static and video advertising and promotions, driving upselling and further brand awareness. A built in NFC reader enables the use of Kappture’s award-winning member module for identifying season ticket holders, VIPs, and/or loyalty

card holders at point of sale. The crown jewel hidden under the K1’s bonnet is its energy efficient processor resulting in the terminal only using a fifth of the power required by conventional Windows terminals in the current marketplace – helping our clients reduce overheads and do their part for the planet. Beyond fixed terminals, mobile all-in-one EPOS and payments devices offer a smart, elegant, and flexible way of taking payments. These all-in-one devices are the natural progression away from ordering tablets with standalone payment devices; now operators take orders and payments on the go and withal the same great features the Kappture software offers fixed terminals. Kappture offers these devices with connectivity through WiFi or 4G and the devices can be used inside or outdoors, enabling payments to be taken throughout the day. If an eighthour battery life still isn’t enough, options are available for bases for quick and easy charging. Kappture’s best-selling tablet offering is the Samsung Tab Active 3. One of the best tablets on the market today, its battery can last approximately 11 hours from a full charge. The Tab Active 3 is ideal for events and hospitality settings, offering a larger screen for table and tab management. The in-built NFC reader is a fantastic addition allowing for member cards to be read and for VIP packages to be applied. The technology is the same and therefore responds equally well to wearable NFC devices as to cards, creating seamless payments for entirely cashless

environments. Complete with a rugged, anti-shock protective case, durable enough to provide resistance to water and dust, the Tab Active 3 is a real workhorse of a tablet. Configurable for 4G and 3G connectivity, the device fully supports WiFi also. Reducing queue times is key for our clients, and for their customers. Self-checkout provides an alternative option to the traditional server-and-POS operation. Kappture’s Kiosks offers an intuitive user interface, sleek design, and eye-catching visuals. These are configured to meet your brand specifications, ensuring that the kiosk fits perfectly amongst your digital retail offerings. Kiosks are available in either a 21” or 27” ultra-slim design, achieved by the fan-less and silent processor powering the kiosk. Housed in an elegant, ergonomic metal shell, the kiosk comes with all the available extras that you could need, receipt printer, NFC, 3D scanner, and a mounting for payment device. The kiosk can be either wall-mounted, reduce space taken in high

volume locations or free standing, secured with a heavy base plate - ideal for locations such as higher education or quickservice-restaurant settings. Alternatively, a counter-top kiosk equivalent is available for catering environments looking to reduce labour costs and offer customers a simple, elegant, and effective solution As agnostic as Kappture are to hardware, doubly so is the case for integrations with Payment Service Providers. Goodbye doubleentry. Hello quick and easy payments with all of the tedium of cash and card declaration taken care of by your electronic-pointof-sale. Looking to take your first steps into a cash-free stadium environment or looking for an innovative hospitality solution partner? Kappture are more than happy to be of service. www.kappture.co.uk WWW.MONDOSTADIA.COM

Fulcrum Acoustic | AHS Series T

he AHS Series is a modular, scalable system targeted at applications where very high output and precise pattern control are required. This new series of products represents a leap forward in achieving digitally configurable coverage for long-throw applications, all within a surprisingly compact envelope. Long-throw applications, such as those encountered in stadium end-zone/scoreboard/video display deployments, pose unique challenges. Substantial acoustic output is required to achieve SPL targets at distance. Additionally, high-frequency air loss can be significant at stadium-scale distances. All aspects of the AHS Series products were designed with these particular challenges foremost in mind. Building on the AH family of high-sensitivity, high-output systems, AHS packs a lot of output into a 36” wide x 31” tall package. AHS high-frequency sections were specifically conceived to provide the extreme high-frequency output necessary to combat air loss. Four high frequency horns (AHS440) or 3 high frequency horns (AHS460) are each paired with a coaxial compression driver; the horn stack is coaxially mounted in the mouth of a low frequency horn. The low frequency horn is driven by 4 high-power 10” woofers loaded by Oculus™ phase plugs. The Compression Head™ extends the low frequency horn length, allowing for low frequency extension to 60 Hz in a modest 28” of depth. There are currently two available AHS models, the AHS440 with 45° horizontal dispersion and the slightly wider AHS460 with 60° horizontal dispersion. The horizontal patterns were specifically chosen to optimize the coverage for stadium-type applications without requiring an excessive quantity of loudspeakers to cover a typical stadium horizontal footprint. Fulcrum Acoustic’s TQ processing combined with beam-forming DSP algorithms configures AHS vertical dispersion to match a venue’s specific geometries and throw distances. The digitally steerable vertical dispersion allows the AHS to cover precise vertical angles of seating across the length of a stadium while avoiding sonic intrusion to neighboring facilities or energizing reflective surfaces. The modular design allows for stacking multiple AHS speakers to create larger arrays, thereby achieving more vertical pattern control, higher output, and increased high-frequency projection. When multiple AHS units are stacked, the stack is configured as one digitally steerable array. 060

The compact dimensions of AHS enclosures allow them to be maneuvered relatively easily within cramped support structures. This is especially beneficial for addressing design challenges presented by endzone/scoreboard/video displays. The ability to seamlessly integrate AHS Series products into existing architecture make them an ideal choice for stadium applications. Their compact size has the added benefit of streamlining what can frequently be a complicated installation process. AHS Series at Crusader Stadium AHS loudspeakers made their project debut at Crusader Stadium at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas. Daktronics was selected to design and install a new scoreboard system that doubled the size of the video display while maintaining high fidelity sound. The new video area consumed all available space within the existing structure. Additional structure was added above the video display to house the new sound system. Due to wind loading concerns, the height of this additional structure was restricted to about 6’ tall, thereby limiting the space available for loudspeakers. For long-throw coverage, Daktronics deployed six Fulcrum Acoustic AHS speaker modules in the horizontal “ribbon” above the video area of the scoreboard. The available space within the scoreboard structure allowed for three stacks of two modules each; this provides sufficient output to achieve the project’s sound level goals for the seating areas. “Even when stacked, Fulcrum’s AHS products easily fit within the space provided,” said Applications Engineer, David Sturzenbecher. Two stacks of two AHS440 modules are splayed left and right of center to cover the far seating along the sides of the stadium. The middle stack features an AHS440 stacked on an AHS460 (60° horizontal) aimed down the centerline of the field to provide long-throw coverage of the far end as well as coverage of the playing field. The precise pattern control from the AHS products keeps sound within the seating bowl, avoids excessive sound levels on the field and at the seats, and minimises sound reflecting off of the Bawcom Student Union building behind the seats on the east side of the stadium. “It’s an impressive full-range system with a remarkable level of control,” added David. “I can already imagine utilising the AHS for many more applications, particularly stadiums, going forward.” www.fulcrum-acoustic.com
