THE NEW FACE OF STADIUM TECHNOLOGY
George Vaughan - CEO, The Digital Line
Areweenteringaneraoftruly frictionless access and movement when visitors attending sports and entertainment events will only need to show their faces at a venue, not only to achieve entry but also to purchase and transact? We take a look under the hood ofthisemergingtechtoassessifthenext greatfrontierforstadiumswillbeallabout redefiningentrythroughidentity.
One of the biggest operational challenges for any venue is people management and equally, one of the most disappointing experiences for any fan or visitor is endless queuing, both when entering a stadium and then when trying to purchase from concessions stands once inside. Numerous solutions have been tried and tested and whilst efficiencies have helped manage customer flow and sales at the retail stands, there is still much more that can be done to improve the overall experience. There’s no doubt that Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology (along with derivatives of the solution) is helping to reconfigure the hospitality sector and the incredible acceleration AI is bringing to the marketplace
– with everything from Digital Twins to Smart Venue Security emerging in this rapidly maturing space – bodes well for the future. In less than a decade we have already seen significant changes and in the next two years alone, we could witness a transformation that leaves the current landscape unrecognisable. One technology many might argue to be quite contentious because it remains somewhat misunderstood but that is nevertheless gaining ground in this area is facial recognition, particularly in stadiums in the US. Very quickly, it is becoming a pivotal innovation in the realm of artificial intelligence and biometrics, changing how we identify individuals and helping to manage their movements and fine tune the services they are offered as guests. In general terms, the technology works by capturing digital images or video frames of human faces and then using advanced algorithms to analyse key facial features. By comparing these features against a database of known faces, facial recognition systems can accurately identify individuals, making them invaluable in various sectors such as security, healthcare, and retail The evolution of facial recognition technology
has been marked by significant advancements in AI and machine learning. Initially focused on basic identification through static images, modern systems now incorporate dynamic aspects like facial expressions and emotions. This progress has enhanced the accuracy and reliability of facial recognition, enabling its application in diverse contexts—from security checkpoints at airports to personalized marketing in retail.
However, despite its benefits, the technology also continues to raise important ethical considerations regarding privacy and data protection, necessitating responsible implementation and robust regulatory frameworks. It’s a fine balance that many companies, especially in Europe and the UK where the conditions of use are much more stringent than the US, continue to wrestle with in an effort to get it right.
In this rapidly evolving landscape of sports and entertainment, one company that grabbed my attention is Wicket, a company that has quickly moved to the forefront of innovation
with their facial recognition technology transforming how fans experience events in stadiums and arenas. With its presence in 40 venues across the United States, including all major sports, Wicket is setting a new standard for efficiency and convenience in event management.
Transforming Fan Experiences
Wicket’s technology is now a staple in every NFL stadium, streamlining credentialing processes and enhancing fan experiences. The Cleveland Browns serve as a prominent case study, with over 40,000 fans opting into the system. This adoption has allowed the Browns to clear queues four times faster than traditional methods, significantly reducing staffing needs and operational costs and lead to their COO, David Jenkins claiming facial recognition technology has enabled them to provide their fans with the best possible experience they have yet been able to deliver. By integrating facial recognition into ticketing, concessions, and access control, Wicket has revolutionised the way fans interact with venues.
A Modern Solution for Age-Old Challenges
Drawing inspiration from historical architecture—where smaller doors within
castle gates facilitated quicker access— Wicket’s facial recognition offers a modern solution for efficient entry. With a commitment to keeping customer data secure, fans can opt into the Wicket system, which uses encrypted mathematical compositions of their faces to ensure security and privacy. This opt-in model respects individual choice while providing a seamless experience for those who participate.
Enhancing Operational Efficiency
Having seen the tech working first hand, I was immediately impressed by the speed of Wicket’s facial recognition and as a fan of alternative solutions like NFC through mobile wallet, I must confess that this is the fastest I have seen any technology respond, making it almost unrivalled, with face matching occurring in just a few hundred milliseconds. When this rapid processing is integrated into the ticketing system, point-of-sale terminals, and credentialing processes, operational efficiency is dramatically improved. Another neat feature that solves a major headache for many retailers is the inclusion of age verification by matching identity card images with users’ faces, ensuring compliance with age-restricted services.
Expanding Horizons
With the popularity of systems like Wicket changing the landscape for sports arenas are we about to witness a revolution make its way across to the UK and Europe? There’s certainly an appetite for frictionless solutions, no doubt fast-tracked by the emergence of Covid, and if the legitimate concerns around data are properly managed then I can’t see any reason why that wouldn’t be the case.
Integration and Future Prospects
With integrations into major platforms like Ticketmaster and deployments at venues such as BMO Stadium for LAFC payments, Wicket is making a strong case for widespread adoption of its platform as well as similar solutions. The proliferation of self-service technologies makes deployment easier than ever, simplifying processes by linking a single card to a face. As facial technology continues to innovate and expand its offerings, it needs to stay committed to enhancing fan experiences while maintaining security and privacy standards. The future of stadium experiences could be upon us and in its efforts to remove friction—it may end up doing it one face at a time.

Isabel Lugo Chief Operating Officer JT Tech
ISABEL LUGO CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER | JT TECH
Can you introduce yourself and tell us more about your career up until now?
Of course! I am Isabel Lugo. As the Chief Operating Officer of JT Tech, my career has been anything but ordinary. I founded my first digital marketing company at the age of 19, and we worked with very important Fortune 500 brands. Later, I launched a logistics startup that quickly expanded to Spain, Poland, and Germany. At 25, I ventured into the hotel and real estate sector by launching hotels in Africa and Latin America. I believe that each experience has shaped my perspective as a business leader and fueled my passion for creating impactful solutions for my clients. In the last four years, I have specialised in operational management and startup development for various regions such as the Middle East, Asia, and Latin America. I am passionate about new business challenges; launching companies from scratch is my true passion, as well as strategic leadership and operational excellence, which are essential for driving significant growth and fostering innovation on a global scale.
Have you always wanted to work in the sporting venue sector?
Yes! It has always been one of my biggest goals. My passion for the sports industry stems from my parents, who were high-performance athletes in their best years. I have also been involved in the CrossFit world and competed for the Spanish national team as a freediver as well, achieving a record of 35m with no fins. Of course, growing up in Colombia, sports has been deeply intertwined with my heart. Juan Pablo Montoya’s journey in motorsport is nothing short of remarkable. He first captured attention by winning the CART Championship in 1999 and went on to claim the Indianapolis 500 twice, in 2000 and 2015. His Formula One career was equally impressive, highlighted by seven Grand Prix victories, including a standout win at Monaco in 2003. Beyond that, he has made significant strides in NASCAR and endurance racing. On the cycling front, Egan Bernal made history as the youngest winner of the Tour de France at just 22 years old in 2019. He followed this with a victory at the Giro d’Italia in 2021, solidifying his status among cycling’s elite. And, in soccer, legendary players like Carlos Valderrama and Tino Asprilla inspired my love for sports, which is deeply rooted in our culture. In Colombia, soccer transcends mere sport; it’s a vibrant celebration of community and pride.
When the opportunity to enter the venue sector arose, it felt like a dream come true—a chance to blend passion with career. As the COO of JT Tech, I see this industry as a lively tapestry of experiences. Each challenge presents an exciting opportunity to learn and propel our company forward. My unique perspective as both a fan and business leader allows me to create engaging environments that resonate with supporters while driving revenue for venues. What truly motivates me is enhancing venues in every way possible! By merging my love for sports with strategic insights, I aim to contribute to the industry’s growth, ensuring every venue celebrates the beautiful game and fosters joy and connection for fans and communities alike.
What do you enjoy most about this industry?
What I enjoy most about the venue and sports industry is the incredible privilege of working with some of the best teams across a wide range of sports, including football, rugby, basketball, baseball, ice hockey, tennis, motorsports, and many others. Each venue has its own unique energy and atmosphere, and visiting these iconic stadiums and arenas allows me to appreciate their history and potential on a deeper level. I find it exhilarating to contribute to enhancing these spaces. The opportunity to elevate venues through our expertise and create unforgettable experiences for fans is what drives me. By understanding the needs of fans from both personal and business perspectives, I can foster environments that engage supporters while also driving revenue for venues. It’s about creating spaces where fans can connect, celebrate, and share their love for sports—whether it’s cheering for their favorite football team or enjoying a thrilling motorsport event. This dynamic environment keeps me inspired and motivated every day.

Oracle Park, home to the San Francisco Giants, has long been considered one of the most iconic and beautiful baseball stadiums in Major League Baseball. Nestled alongside the stunning San Francisco Bay, the stadium offers breathtaking views, unforgettable baseball moments, and now, a newly upgraded audio system that is redefining the fan experience. Thanks to a collaboration between Diversified, Powersoft, and Fulcrum Acoustic, Oracle Park’s audio system is now setting a new standard for stadium sound design and performance.
A Longstanding Partnership for Excellence
The partnership between Diversified, a global leader in technology solutions, and the San Francisco Giants is one that spans over two decades. As Bill Schlough, Chief Information Officer for the Giants, put it: “As we enter our 25th season at Oracle Park, this upgrade truly elevates the complete ballpark experience for our fans.”
Diversified’s involvement with the Giants has been extensive, contributing to various key technological implementations, including the ballpark’s video replay control room and
distributed TV network, among other projects. This strong relationship has culminated in yet another milestone, transforming the audio experience for fans attending games and events at Oracle Park.
When Oracle Park’s original audio system launched in 2000, it was heralded as one of the best in the league. Distributed sound systems were a new concept, and the Giants led the charge with an innovative setup that offered superior clarity. Fast forward to 2024, and the Giants recognised the need for an upgrade to maintain their leadership in providing an exceptional fan experience. The answer? A modern audio system designed to deliver both clear voice announcements and high-fidelity music.
A Collaborative Approach to Modernisation
The audio system upgrade was a carefully orchestrated project, involving thorough planning and collaboration between the Giants, Diversified, Powersoft, and Fulcrum Acoustic. Diversified, taking a consultative and analyticsbased approach, identified key operational goals and technical challenges. The project required a balance between reusing
the existing infrastructure—thus minimising costs—and deploying state-of-the-art solutions that would deliver enhanced performance.
By leveraging their deep network of industry partners, Diversified utilised Powersoft for the amplification and processing aspects of the audio system. Powersoft’s amplifiers - in this case, the X4 and Quattrocanali serieswere chosen for their crossfunctionality, energy efficiency, reliability, and seamless integration with the stadium’s existing Q-Sys control system.
The Power Behind the Sound: Powersoft
Powersoft amplifiers played a crucial role in the success of the new sound system at Oracle Park. The installation included 36 Powersoft Quattrocanali 4804 DSP+D and 12 Quattrocanali 8804 DSP+D amplifiers, paired with Powersoft’s X4 model for additional power and flexibility.
These amplifiers not only provided the necessary power to drive the Fulcrum Acoustic speaker system, but also delivered key advantages in terms of efficiency, integration, and control.
One of the standout features of Powersoft’s amplifiers is their Smart Rails Management (SRM) technology, which drastically reduces power consumption and minimizes the need for external cooling systems. This not only aligns with the Giants’ sustainability goals, but also results in significant cost savings.
Rick Woida, Powersoft’s Senior Sales Engineer – Large Venues, said: “We pride ourselves in designing and building top-notch Class-D amplification with a strong focus on efficiency and sustainability.”

audio signal, optimizing sound quality in real-time, while the Dante functionality allows for smooth digital audio distribution over the stadium’s network.
By incorporating state-of-the-art DSP and networking capabilities, the Giants can now benefit from a scalable, future-ready system that can adapt to changing needs over time.
Additionally, Powersoft amplifiers provide a built-in redundancy that ensures uninterrupted operation. In the event of a digital failure, the amplifiers can automatically switch to analog inputs, guaranteeing continuous performance—a critical feature in high-stakes environments like a Major League Baseball stadium.
As Justo Gutierrez, Director of Engineering for Diversified, explained: “They reboot quickly if there is a power outage: you turn it back on, and within ten seconds, they can start making sound again.”
Powersoft has been absolutely integral in reducing operational expenses, all while improving sound clarity and providing a more engaging audio experience for fans.
Fulcrum Acoustic: Delivering the Sound
The speaker system, provided by Fulcrum Acoustic, was another critical component of the project. Known for their advanced acoustic technology, Fulcrum speakers were

selected for their ability to deliver both clarity and impact, especially in a large open environment like a baseball stadium.
To achieve the desired results, Diversified and Fulcrum Acoustic worked closely together to ensure that the speaker placement and configuration maximised coverage and performance. By reusing some of the existing speaker locations and upgrading to new Fulcrum models, the team was able to create a more immersive soundscape that delivers crystal-clear audio throughout the ballpark.
A Game-Changing Fan Experience
The combination of Powersoft amplifiers and Fulcrum
Acoustic speakers has resulted in a significant improvement in sound quality at Oracle Park - fans are now treated to a richer, more engaging audio experience. This is especially noticeable in the stadium’s public areas, such as the exclusive Gotham Club and private meeting rooms, where the acoustic environment has been fine-tuned for optimal clarity and impact.
“Having our amplifiers be a part of such an iconic stadium for MLB is an honour,” commented Rick Woida, Powersoft’s Senior Sales Engineer – Large Venues. “The team at Diversified were great to work with and I am happy to have supported them in their design decisions and deployment of this installation.”

STADION LETZIGRUND
Zürich, Switzerland
Images: Renkus-Heinz
Originally built by members of FC Zürich, Stadion Letzigrund has been the home of football and ‘Weltklasse Zürich’ – one of the most renowned one-day events in athletics – since 1925. A call for the modernization of the stadium in the late 90s saw the venue close its doors and reinvent itself in the summer of 2007, with an improved capacity for football, athletics and concerts. Since then, the stadium has hosted European Championships, concerts by internationally renowned artists, and several big games for the Swiss Football League. To continue its legacy, Letzigrund upgraded its sound system with Renkus-Heinz to provide spectators with seamless audio, no matter the event.
Collaborating on the project were integrators avidec AG and audio consultants promedias AG. The events programme at the stadium changes regularly, so the system had to be
weather-resistant and flexible enough to cater to speech, music and public announcements. Consistent and balanced sound pressure levels were important, as was even coverage.
Renkus-Heinz’s C Series and T Series loudspeakers in the WR weather-resistant versions delivered exactly what Letzigrund was looking for.
“Renkus-Heinz has a large range of loudspeaker systems, which meant that we were able to find the perfect solution for this project,” begins Chris Steiger CEO and founder of promedias AG. “We originally installed 48 CX61 models in 2022 as nearfield loudspeakers for the audience in the back rows. This year, we expanded the system further, replacing the original loudspeakers that were installed in 2007 when the stadium reopened with over 30 TX151s. This enabled us to deliver homogenous sound for all events.”
avidec installed 31 TX151s on the stadium roof to deliver
powerful sound to the audience. Two loudspeakers are mounted in each front field, with one loudspeaker directed at the athletics track and the second at the front row of spectators. In the rear field, one TX151 loudspeaker provides sound for the audience at the back, and the rear three rows of seats benefit from sound provided by the additional, smaller CX61s.
“Renkus-Heinz’s T Series loudspeakers are versatile enclosures that can be integrated almost anywhere,” furthers Steiger. “The models are ideal for sports venue projects, delivering outstanding sonic performance to every area of the Letzigrund.” The TX151s put the unique
advancements of Renkus-Heinz into practice with their complex conic horns. These horns provide constant beamwidth and directivity without the problems of conventional rectangular horns.
The C Series comprises two-way compact loudspeakers built upon Renkus-Heinz’s design philosophy of innovation, sound quality and user-friendliness. Featuring the same complex conic horn technology of the T Series, the CX61 models deliver high-volume output in a small enclosure, as well as low distortion and high-frequency performance power.
“avidec AG has been supporting the system since it was
installed in 2007, therefore for over 17 years,” Steiger continues. “The experienced technicians at avidec AG chose Renkus-Heinz’s T Series and C Series models because of their excellent dispersion angles, high SPL and weatherproof housing. These models fit perfectly into the existing infrastructure. With this first conversion, we have now installed new sound in 40% of the spectator stands. We plan on integrating more TX151s next year for the middlerow and back-row seats and the field. That’s how much confidence we have in these loudspeakers.”
Renkus-Heinz delivers everything you need for stadium sound. The T Series and C Series loudspeakers offer high
performance, customization, small form factor and weather resistance, all of which are crucial for a great game day experience. Choosing a system from Renkus-Heinz has not only made things easier for the on-site team at Letzigrund but has also brought fans closer to the game – with clarity and precision like never before.
BUSCH STADIUM & NATIONALS PARK
St. Louis, USA | Washington, D.C., USA

Arange of Major League (MLB) and Minor League (MiLB) baseball stadiums across the U.S. have turned to Eastern Acoustic Works (EAW®) for their growing audio needs. Busch Stadium, home of the St. Louis Cardinals, and Nationals Park, home of the Washington Nationals, acquired the brand’s MK Series, MKD Series and QX Series to elevate their game day audio experiences for fans. St. Louis, MO-based integrator ArchKey Solutions facilitated the EAW upgrades for both MLB stadiums.
A repeat EAW customer, the St. Louis Cardinals stadium utilises a distributed audio system. The stadium needed to update its aging EAW system and add coverage in additional areas. The MK Series was an ideal choice for use as a distributed/fill system and the QX Series was also wellsuited since it is particularly geared toward medium-tolarge-sized spaces. The series is also designed for venues
that require high power and consistent coverage in compact housing.
“EAW’s product line is unique in that we cover the entire span from short to long throw loudspeakers with multiple horn patterns and weather-protected finishes,” said T.J. Smith, President of Eastern Acoustic Works. “When you choose EAW, you are getting a complete stadium audio solution with various models and options, all of which is voiced to sound the same, from one supplier.”
The Washington Nationals stadium is similar to the St. Louis Cardinals in that they also had an aging EAW system and needed an upgrade. However, in addition to MK, MKD and QX Series, the space also integrated EAW’s MKC Series for the food and beverage portion of the stadium. These coaxial point source loudspeakers were the perfect fit for this area since they provide exceptional sound in small- and medium-sized spaces.
“EAW loudspeakers get the crowd into the game with lowfrequency response and high SPL across long distances. Our ability to do all this with control keeps things out of the reverberate space, allowing everyone to hear and understand what is being communicated,” added Smith.
EAW’s line of products scales from small to large applications. The brand is used at large professional major league stadiums, but also smaller scale minor league stadiums, such as Day Air Ballpark, home field for the Dayton Dragons. Handled by Integrator New Era Technology, EAW’s MKD Series was installed in the stadium. These full range loudspeakers deliver the high output, broadband pattern control and exceptional fidelity required for midsized stadiums and venues.
Most stadiums have distributed systems, where the speakers are placed around the stadium, closer to the fans, and others
prefer a scoreboard system, where all the speakers are located by the scoreboard, serving as a single source for all the sound.
“Both PA designs are effective and really depend on the sizes, needs and budget of the venue itself,” said Smith.
“We are agnostic in the design, so whichever type of system is specified, EAW has a catalog that can service the design approach. We support our clients in providing premium audio, clarity and coverage, from one supplier, using one software and with consistent voicing.”
EAW’s QX loudspeaker elevates the game day experience for fans. Designed for venues that require high power and consistent coverage in a low-profile form, QX is the ideal choice for a stadium’s distributed sound system.
Major League Baseball teams such as the Atlanta Braves, Boston Redsox, St. Louis Cardinals, Toronto Blue Jays and the Washington Nationals deliver superior audio clarity in their stadiums with the QX Series. These speakers are geared toward medium-to-large-sized spaces like stadiums and arenas, providing line array control and output in a point source package.
No matter your sport or your team, QX helps you take control of your sound. Learn more at https://eaw.com

Toyota Center has unveiled the completion of a two-year venue-wide digital signage upgrade at the annual preseason Fan Fest, featuring one of the largest and most advanced centerhung scoreboards in the NBA as a part of nearly 13,000 square feet of digital signage improvements. Developed in partnership with AV technology design and integration leader ANC and industry-leading consulting firm WJHW, the new LED displays focus on offering premier experiences for their fans, building on their momentum last season and strengthening Toyota Center’s standing as one of the most forwardthinking venues in professional sports.
“These technology transformations emphasize our commitment to creating a more exciting and immersive environment for all of our new and returning Rockets fans and live events attendees,” said Rockets President of Business Operations Gretchen Sheirr. “We appreciate partners like ANC who understand how passionate we are about improving the venue experience and have helped us make it a reality. The sheer size and intricate resolution of our Center Hung, its innovative underbelly displays and new smoke effects via Rocket boosters, plus last year’s in-bowl upgrades all add up to a completely new experience for so many of our fans, providing larger-than-life views from every seat in the house.”
