Our Judges... Stephen Lieberman SJ Lighting “The mondo*dr Awards have seen tremendous growth since last year; which was apparent by the large amount of amazing projects. It was an honour to be included in the judges panel for the second year in a row. Congratulations to all of the winners, your work was a standout amongst the best of the best.”
Cat Strom
Cat Strom Entertainment Technology PR “It was an honour to be invited to judge the mondo*dr Awards and the competition was extremely fierce this year. The nominees were extraordinarily impressive and it was difficult to choose the winners as they were all worthy candidates. Such inspiration!”

The Inside Story
“My judging duties were so rewarding. I felt like the world of entertainment architecture, planning and technology was hand delivered to me. To be made aware in detail of all of these projects through the mondo*dr website informed my practice as a consultant. The project profiles are available to everyone. If you review them, you can learn so much - it’s highly recommended.”
“Once again, it was a pleasure and privilege to participate in the mondo*dr Awards, which has rapidly become a stand-out feature of the Prolight + Sound exhibition, as well as a highly-coveted accolade within the industry. The event itself was very impressive, much larger than in the debut year, and I’m looking forward to seeing it continue to grow.”
Scott Willsallen Auditoria “Congratulations to the category winners of this year’s mondo*dr Awards. I was impressed with the quantity and quality of the entries, it made selecting my preference for each category quite difficult. It was great to see some really intelligent use of technology to overcome project challenges. The breadth of entries was also great to see, from big installations with significant budgets to more humble projects, yet all with demanding requirements. I encourage manufacturers and integrators to get behind the awards and make our job next year even harder.”
David Gray Oasis Enterprises LLC
Andy Taylor Gasoline Design
“With such a diverse set of nominations over many sectors of the industry, it’s refreshing to see how companies continue to solve problems using technology appropriately rather than ‘because it’s there’. Having first hand experience of delivering projects in the Middle East, La Perle is a worthy winner with focus on maintaining excellence rather than the more typical projects that open early and then see what happens. “
“In an industry crammed with fantastically creative and artistic people, it was once again an honour to be asked to sit on the judging panel for these awards. Even though only in it’s second year, the awards seem to be gathering an incredible momentum, evident in the high quality of entrants in all catagories. It’s hard not to be humbled by (and dare I say a little jealous of) those involved in all the entered projects, and equally tough to pick between them.”

Gearhouse System Solutions “I greatly enjoyed being part of the judging panel for the mondo*dr Awards. It was thrilling to see the range of planning, sophistication, and solid storytelling evident in these designs. I’m very encouraged for our industry!”
“So many amazing project submissions, so difficult to choose…”
Ben M Rogers Ardent Limited (Cyprus) “The artistry in the design and implementation of technology should never be underestimated. The diverse range of entries for the awards included projects where a single product provided a unique and innovative solution, through to comprehensive venue designs. My criteria for judging was simple: ‘impress me with innovation’. That innovation could have been newly-applied technology, design response or a range of elements combined to deliver a complete package. It was a pleasure to have had the opportunity to look in detail at this incredible portfolio of work around the world. I congratulate all those nominees and winners alike.”

“As a foundation sponsor of the awards, we were always excited to be part of the awards for 2018. The number and quality of entries this year is really a great showcase of how technology can enhance a space, and really enhance with a high level of integration, handin-hand with the architecture and functional use. I’m sure the awards are now providing inspiration for many in the industry. too. For us at RGBlink, we love to see the way people are making use of visual technologies, in particular. The awards night itself at Prolight + Sound was excellent - more than an awards, a social occasion, too - bringing together so many people to celebrate and network, while acknowledging all the wonderful finalists and brilliant winners. Here’s looking forward to 2019!”

The mondo*dr team really stepped it up a level this year and I think everyone in attendance could sense that these awards are here to stay. That was great to see. Elation was proud to again support as a sponsor and having a project that features our products awarded was the icing on the cake.”
Jeroen Carette Intl. Sales and Marketing Manager, Music & Lights “ The mondo*dr Awards are clearly becoming the networking event during Prolight + Sound. All major brands had their key representatives there, the nominees shortlist contained nothing but high level projects. Music&Lights will proudly support the event again next year!”
Martin Fritzsche Marketing Manager, MADRIX “The second ceremony confirmed that these awards are exactly what the mondo*dr team set out to create and what they promised they would be. It is the prestigious and - more importantly - independent event that this industry needs to show the wide array of creative and remarkable work from professionals all around the world. It is also a great source of inspiration and motivation for everyone.”
Shortlisted - Nightclub Amadeus The Americas Location: New York, USA Manufacturers: Robe, Elation Lighting, X-lLser, Hazebase, MADRIX, Resolume, MA Lighting, Tirso Lighting Distributor: Tirso Lighting, Inner Circle Distribution, Act Lighting, Installer: Tirso Lighting Architect: Bluarch Architecture + Interiors Lighting / Visual Designer: Tirso Lighting Acoustician: Terry Petch Audio The LED screen at Amadeus Nightclub is a dynamic, vibrant and cutting edge curve-able LED display, creating boundless opportunities to create an unforgettable custom visual experience with HD quality. Amadeus Nightclub promised that customers will experience true HD quality video, with the creative freedom that allows the graphic design team and lighting coordinator to curate breath-taking visualisations. The approach Tirso Lighting took to achieve the end product was based on making sure it touched a few different angles, the aim was to have a dynamic LED centrepiece that based itself around dense body of light. The entire nightclub surrounded itself with an LED linear lighting system, whilst complementing all of areas of the club with a combination of moving fixtures, strobes, special effect lighting, adequate stage lighting and a pair of high powered lasers. The main focus of the stage area is a 300ft P6 Custom LED screen made up of curved and flat LED video panels. The main challenge of this project was working around the structure of the space as it did not have a defined centre, Tirso Lighting had to get creative to implement the design into the install.

Shortlisted - Nightclub 1Oak APAC Location: Tokyo, Japan Manufacturers: d&b audiotechnik, Soundcraft, Robe, MA Lighting, MADRIX Distributor: d&b audiotechnik Japan (Direct Sales) Architect: Roy Nachum and Maia Nachum, Mercer Project Lighting / Visual Designer: ATO Acoustician: d&b audiotechnik Japan Installer: FeedBackPro 1Oak (as in 1 Of A Kind) has recently opened its most ambitious and state-of-the-art club to date, a three storey, 1000-capacity venue at the base of Roppongi Hills in Tokyo. As with 1Oak clubs around the world, the latest Tokyo venue is not simply a nightclub. Founder, Richie Akiva, had a vision for the entertainment venue; an inspiring space capable of hosting live music, launches, premieres, after-parties and VIP events. The goal was to have an even configuration across the three floors, the difficulty was to cover smaller areas, like the VIP rooms and side seating, with a suitable level of sound compared to the main floor. With the restrooms equipped with d&b 4S loudspeakers, the result is an even, immersive and intimate experience connecting all three floors. Lighting designers, ATO, decided to use LED technology with indirect lighting to deliver and aimed to surround the space with dynamic, immersive movement, creating a warm, festive atmosphere. The idea was to represent the design of the club through different angles, creating the impression that the whole space changes throughout the night. It was important to create an immersive installation and surround customers and performers
with a dynamic experience. ATO aimed to convey the feeling that the whole venue was physically dancing and pulsing. To achieve this goal ATO chose to utilise 25 Robe Spikies due to their versatility, as well as six LED chandeliers. The Spikies are controlled using MA Lighting’s MA onPC Command Wing board and a touch-screen PC. A LED System is used throughout the venue, using a brandnew type of LED strip that is ideal for creating colours and atmosphere to match the wooden design of the venue. ATO worked with the manufacturer in Asia to develop new high density - 30 pixels per meter - LED strips with an extra warm white chip to convey the elegant and natural atmosphere of the venue. All the LED strips are connected to 24 Art-Net decoders with four SPI channels, each of them linked to a RJ45 switch connected to a media server. MADRIX software was used with the Ultimate (256 DMX universe) license for the dancefloor, VIP areas and entrance. MADRIX was selected as it was able to support over a kilometre of LED strips with no delay and audio reactive feature. The MADRIX software is a huge part of the installation at 1Oak Tokyo; identifying each pixel independently, it helps the light operator to deliver dynamic, harmonious, generative effects live through the console. The VIP rooms have independent LED systems; the LED light system can be controlled with an iPad connected to the Media Server using Wi-Fi. 1Oak wanted a system that allowed customers in the VIP rooms to control the lighting. With the iPad and a custom control page, customers can play with the lighting and create a mood that suits them.

Shortlisted - Nightclub Terminal 7 Europe Location: Paris, France Manufacturers: Schnick-Schnack-Systems GmbH Distributor and Installer: Ledbox Company Architect: Groupe Noctis Lighting / Visual Designer: Guto Requena, Brazil In December 2017, ‘Le Terminal 7’ opened in Paris, an event club on the top floor of Pavilion 7 of the Parc des Expositions at Porte de Versailles. The Pavilion 7, which houses the club, is located in the 15th arrondissement of the city, was previously used as an event location and was completely renovated by the Noctis group within two years. The central element of the new club is the light art work of the Brazilian artist Guto Requena - a space-filling structure that represents an inverted tree whose roots are anchored in the sky. The special feature is the tree was completely designed by a parametric software - a series of mathematical operations generated the structure - the equipment for this ‘work of art’, was supplied by local company, Ledbox. A total of 450-metres of Schnick-Schnack-Systems‘ Series C video-controllable LED strips were installed in the sculpture - driven by a MADRIX Ultimate media server.
Winner - Nightclub Corner Club APAC
Location: Manado City, Indonesia Manufacturers: LEDWorks , MADRIX, Pangolin Laser Systems, Stage Accompany Distributor: NewVision Installer: KC SOUND, Lights Professional Architect: Chae Wiro / Corner Club Manado Lighting / Visual Designer: Anny Harijanto / Lights Professional Acoustician: Sie Kek Chung / KC SOUND
Manado has become an extremely popular city in Indonesia, thanks to its paradisiacal location and surrounding diving spots. Tourists and locals are avid party-goers and that is why Corner Club’s owner wanted to create nothing less than the city’s most interesting nightlife spot. The spacious venue is not only located in the corner of a crowded city area, but also boasts a very high ceiling in diamond shape - ideal conditions for a unique appearance, however, the previous lighting had become outdated. The goal was to create the ideal ambience for people to enjoy the music, Lights Professional and NewVision Technology were tasked to renovate the nightclub with a design that was much more luxurious and modern. The recommendation was to update the system with the latest in LED lighting and control technology, the design was based on the original diamond shape of the ceiling. In order to highlight this unique characteristic and to turn it into a huge 3D lighting object, three types of LED fixtures were deployed: 9,000 30mm LED pixel lights with a milky cover; 420 one-metre vertical LED tubes; and 756-metres of soft LED stripes. All of these fixtures, and over 160 DMX universes in total, are controlled with a complete lighting control system that included 20 MADRIX NEBULA hardware units and one MADRIX KEY ultimate software controller. 3D visual effects are the main focus of this setup, in order to present eye-catching LED lighting with tremendous wow-factors, the selected fixtures were distinctly arranged on different levels of the ceiling. In addition the fixtures were patched on different layers in the MADRIX software. The final result is exceptionally gorgeous lighting that creates stunning visuals that are as volumetric, colourful, and dynamic as initially intended. No less than a two thousand metres of wiring were needed in this project, the complexity and balance of cable exposure versus tidiness was one of the biggest challenges, which eventually took longer than expected to overcome. Preparing more than nine thousand pieces of LED pixels into hundreds of wooden panels and the corresponding configurations on four types of panels was equally challenging. Furthermore, audio speakers by Stage Accompany were chosen and installed for this nightclub.
Shortlisted - Integrated Resort EVRY Europe Location: Stockholm, Sweden Manufacturers: Schnick-Schnack-Systems GmbH Lighting / Visual Designer: Mikkel Cornelius Lehne Installer: Void AS EVRY is a Norwegian information technology company that supplies services relating to computing, including operation, outsourcing and online banking. The company is headquartered in Oslo and has over 10,000 employees at 135 offices in 16 countries. The entrance area for the EVRY Sweden office in Stockholm was redesigned in 2017. The company, Void AS, with the team by managing director Mikkel Cornelius Lehne was involved from the beginning in the conception and execution of the elaborate project. Key elements of the new entrance area are a
video-playable ceiling and a seven-step staircase, which contains abstract graphics, texts and corporate elements. In the 120 sq metres large ceiling, around 2,400 LED strips C12 by Schnick-Schnack-Systems are installed. In order to achieve a three-dimensional effect, the strips were mounted between two layers PETG with a mirror film on the inner surface. Thus the light is reflected 15 times. The stairs of the entrance area set 392 LED tiles C25 in scene. The LED components in the ceiling and the staircase are controlled by three Pixel-Gate Plus. A total of 96 DPB Pixel-Router ensure the power and data supply of the installation. A software especially developed by Void AS automatically generates animations that change as a result of movements in the room.

Shortlisted - Integrated Resort Samsung Hypercube Europe Location: Dorset, UK Manufacturers: Avolites, Samsung Distributor: GaiaNova Productions Installer: GaiaNova Productions Thousands of festival-goers experienced the uniquely interactive audio-visual environment of the Samsung Hypercube as part of Samsung’s S8 phone UK launch this summer. The Samsung Hypercube toured its mind-boggling ‘360 Infinity Selfie’ Experience to Boardmasters, Bestival and Reading festivals, with Avolites’ Ai media control at the heart of its complex technical infrastructure. Containing a reflective panelled interior separated by strips of colour changing LED and a 27-metre by one-metre continuous wrap-around LED video screen, the Hypercube immersed audiences into a 360° infinite display of light and colour. Samsung’s new Galaxy S8 smartphone acted as a control interface allowing visitors to influence the cube’s audio and infinite visual effects created through its multiple reflective surfaces. “We were tasked with delivering the technology and functionality to make the concept of the project’s developers, Iris Worldwide, and its Creative Director, Ross Cairns, a reality,” said Ben Stern of GaiaNova Productions, the company that managed the technical production of the Hypercube. Working with a number of collaborators, GaiaNova developed the Hypercube’s integrated, automated playback system using Avolites Ai media server software. The company’s creative partner Immersive developed the consumer-facing applications including the interactivity control app, sign up app as well as the control system apps for hosts. Immersive also developed the back-end system for the upload and distribution of media to the audience who took part. In addition, there was a 360° camera setup with a back-end system for live stitching the images from multiple cameras, provided by Focal Point VR. Ben said: “The whole system was controlled by hosts within the space. The control app sent triggers to audio playback which then sent MIDI over IP commands to Ai and to the 360° camera stitching/record system to create the video and still media. Our team even automated the upload process with another MIDI cue from audio playback using a little macro program called TinyTask.” A 12-channel ambisonic sound system designed by Pedro Zaz and supplied by C3 Productions. The project was built using Ai version 10 software, while onsite GaiaNova used Avolites Miami dongles to run Ai on high spec custom-built laptops that the company maintains as part of its hire stock. The show used two Ai outputs, one for the LED ‘Video Flex’ system provided by Light Initiative which divided the mirror sections and another for the LED screen panels provided by Video Illusions. Ben said: “We were able to use the UV mapping/3D visualiser in Ai to demo the content to the client and help them understand different looks, both prior to the project and onsite during the installation. It also helped us to size the playback media efficiently within a standard video clip size.” The team also had the opportunity to ‘play’ with the system, as Ben explained: “A number of new ideas were introduced during the tour, including a ‘party’ where, instead of playing back a single edited video to accompany a track, we were asked to VJ. We were able to produce a series of VJ clips, attach a MIDI controller and VJ the show.”

Shortlisted - Best Integrated Resort Delphin Botanik Exclusive Resort Europe Location: Antalya, Turkey Manufacturers: Hera LED, MADRIX Distributor: Hera LED Architect: KRT Architect Lighting / Visual Designer: Hera LED Installer: Hera LED The goal for the lighting concept of the Delphin Botanik Exclusive Resort simply was to integrate a comprehensive RGB LED lighting design for the entire building that made the hotel stand out from its competitors in the area - and would be an entertaining, fun eye-catcher for guests and potential visitors. In the project, all balconies of the hotel are illuminated with Ledstrip 30 RGB, functioning as one pixel. A total of 4,260-metres was installed. The strips are used as RGB colour fixture in combination with 655 X-CV3 constant-voltage LED drivers and each balcony is individually addressed using pixel mapping. Dynamic and colourful effects are also created with help of PD60 RGB Pixel Dots on the roof and for the central domes. A total of 12 Power Pack 320 are used for their supply of power.
They are especially useful in projects with large cable lengths since they integrate a fully-isolated DMX splitter. The fact that all products are using the RDM protocol, ensured a successful commissioning process and group-wide remote addressing after the entire assembly process had been finished. One MADRIX KEY professional control system communicates with eight MADRIX LUNA 4 nodes that are distributed over large distances throughout the entire hotel via Ethernet and Art-Net. The lighting system had to be controlled from a single room and thus had to branch out to the different sections. A variety of lighting scenes has been written on a day-byday and hour-by-hour basis in order to meet the client’s requirements for the exterior lighting. In addition, lighting scenarios are accompanied by various scenes that run in sync with the music when required. Probably the biggest challenge was that the site of the hotel was very big. Coordination between the departments and communication between our experienced team came in handy with the help of radio sets. The project was completed in three months with an assembly team of eight members working intensively.

Winner - Integrated Resort Terrell Place The Americas
Location: Washington, D.C., USA Manufacturers: Gerriets GmbH, ESI Design Distributor: Gerriets International Installer: HITT Contracting, Architect: Gensler Lighting / Visual Designer: ESI Design Acoustician: Bruce Odland
In this project, the lobby of Terrell Place in Washington, DC, owned by Beacon Capital Partners, was transformed with a 160 sq metre motion-activated media wall. Technology and media are seamlessly integrated into architectural surfaces, creating an everevolving artwork that captures the pulse of the building. The huge Gerriets’ FROST diffusion film canvas, combined with ESI’s design, converts the expansive first floor lobby space into a single media canvas. By installing large-scale, reactive media on lobby walls and corridor portals, a sense of connection across the building’s common areas is achieved. At 25-metres wide by four-metres high, the largest media wall is capturing the attention and curiosity of the public, who can see it from outside through oversize windows. Highlights of the media included, diffused LED wall displays in the main lobbies and corridor are activated by passers by via an infrared camera system, creating beautiful scenes that ebb and flow with the morning rush and the afternoon lull. The displays include three content modes - ‘Seasons,’ ‘Color Play,’ and ‘Cityscape’ - offering a selection of scenes that can be programmed with varying durations and sequences, ensuring that tenants never see the same scene even if they arrive and leave at the same time every day. The ‘Season’ mode shows the lifecycle of the iconic Washington, DC cherry trees. In the ‘Spring’ phase, as people pass by the screens, their movement causes the trees to blossom until eventually their petals fall off; when people pause in the lobby, they trigger butterflies to flutter. ‘Color Play’ shows algorithmically-generated patterns of multi-colour threads which spread across the walls, weaving a tapestry that reflects the activity of Terrell Place. ‘City Scape’ pays homage to the city of Washington D.C. with iconic architecture, statuary and transportation scenes that are brought to life by people passing by. Unlike the interactive installations commonly found in shopping malls or museums, the visuals are not projected onto the wall plane. Rather, Terrell Place’s walls are covered with approximately 30,000 LEDs per sq-metre, for a total of nearly five million LEDs over the project’s entire 160 sq metre installation. The five mm diameter diodes are installed behind an acrylic diffusion layer by Gerriets called FROST diffusion film. An air cavity between the LEDs and the surface of the lobby wall ventilates the diodes, keeping them cool and running efficiently.
Shortlisted - House of Worship Maria Magdelena Church Europe Location: Stockholm, Sweden Manufacturers: d&b audiotechnik, QSC, Sony, DPA Microphones Acoustician: SoundCop Consulting Installer: SoundCop Consulting Restoration of all the historic architecture was part of the renovation, but the church simultaneously incorporated the installation of a new PA, which would future-proof the house of worship for years to come. The building’s unique architecture did cause some obstacles for the audio installation, though, as it had to deliver acoustically, but couldn’t be visually intrusive. Locally-based SoundCop Consulting took on the challenge. The audio specification was finalised quite early in the refurbished process, or so SoundCop Consulting thought until Joakim Hammar and Jacob Julin - who took over the company in 2011 - attended a demo by Arva Trading at Stefanskyrkan. After listening to the setup at Stefanskyrkan and being so impressed, the SoundCop Consulting duo overhauled the system design for Maria Magdalena Church, incorporating their new brand choice - d&b audiotechnik. “We were totally blown away by how good it sounded at the demo in Stefanskyrkan, so we went back and changed the whole specification for Maria Magdalena Church. This is the first two-way passive column speaker that we have seen that actually sounds like a proper PA system,” said Jacob. “The sound stays coherent and warm, rather than like it’s coming from a flimsy speaker, which is so often the case with the sound set up in a church.” SoundCop Consulting decided to go with a combination of d&b’s xC-Series of two-way passive column loudspeakers, xS-Series loudspeakers and B4 cardioid subwoofers along with the 10D four-channel amplifier. Natanael Lyckelind, Sales
& Support AV/Pro Audio, at Arva Trading, which distributes d&b audiotechnik in the region explained: “The passive cardioid function of the xC-Series column loudspeakers, results in excellent dispersion control, which makes them particularly good for an environment like Maria Magdalena Church. SoundCop Consulting was very impressed with the results that they saw or rather heard - at the demo.” As Natanael discussed, the unique layout of the church, with such a long nave, did throw up reverberation and speech intelligibility issues. However, by utilising the passive cardioid function of the xC-Series, reduced the level of the reverberant field, maximising speech intelligibility. To achieve the optimum results SoundCop Consulting installed six 24C and 18 16C column loudspeakers, eight 4S loudspeakers, two B4-SUBs and six 10D amplifiers. “This is the first big installation we’ve done with d&b xC-Series in Sweden - there have been some smaller churches but nothing on this scale, so now we have a lot of technicians talking about this project. The results have been really good. A lot of choirs come to perform at Maria Magdalena Church and they like to bring their own sound systems, but when they see how well the in-house set-up works, they prefer to use that instead.” The entire sound set up at Maria Magdalena Church is controlled by a QSC Q-SYS audio control platform, utilising the d&b plug-in for the integration of the 10D amplifiers. The plug-in allows access to d&b amplifier parameters - gain and mute status, amp presets, power on/off status - directly from the Q-SYS interface. The d&b kit is also integrated with a six-channel digital wireless microphone system, a Sony DWX system with handheld and belt pack transmitters, as well as a selection of DPA Microphones equipment including six d:fine headsets, four 4011A cardioid microphones and two 4098 gooseneck microphones.

Shortlisted House of Worship Trinity Church The Americas Location: Lubbock, USA Manufacturers: Meyer Sound, Yamaha Commercial Audio, Vanguard, Martin by Harman, ETC Distributor: Summit Integrated Systems Architect: Lee Architects Lighting / Visual Designer: Summit Integrated Systems Installer: Summit Integrated Systems The 1,800-seat main sanctuary of Trinity Church in Lubbock, Texas is housed underneath a unique 15-sided dome, originally built in the 1970s - a time when asbestos-based insulation was still allowed. Recently, when health and safety regulations compelled the church to remove the old asbestos insulation and install new sprinkler systems, church leadership decided to seize the opportunity for a complete renovation of the entire structure, stripping it down to the outside shell and installing new seating, a new stage, and all new audio, lighting and video systems. The world-class AVL package was designed and supplied by Summit Integrated Systems of Lafayette, Colorado. The audio brief entailed bringing a greater degree of focus and clarity to the worship services, at a level well beyond what was realised with the ageing centre-cluster system that was removed. As is well known to all acousticians, dome-shaped ceilings are inherently problematic. In the case of Trinity, removal of the “popcorn” asbestos ceiling treatment actually exacerbated the potential problems. Therefore, the new audio system would have to exhibit a far greater degree of control to keep sound focused on the congregation, while at the same time providing significantly greater power and headroom to
accommodate the church’s highly contemporary and youthoriented music programs. The new system comprises dual main hangs of nine per side Leopard compact line array loudspeakers, augmented on the extreme sides by pairs of UPQ-1P loudspeakers directed at the upper and lower seating areas. The UP-4XP loudspeakers deployed as front fill (eight) and under-balcony delays (24) all incorporate Meyer Sound’s exclusive IntelligentDC technology, combining the inherent performance advantages of selfpowered loudspeakers with the installation ease of constantvoltage distributed systems. According to the church’s pastor of technical arts, Michael Koontz, the new Leopard arrays have overcome the acoustic challenges. With the old system, he recalls, there was no sense of directionality, of a defined sound source, as sound was bouncing off every surface. The audio system renewal also included new Yamaha digital consoles (CL5 at FOH and CL3 at monitors) and upgrading of the existing Shure UHF-R wireless microphones with new ULX-D systems. The wireless IEMs are Shure PSM-1000. The unusual shape of the dome roof proved problematic, with the load engineering safety factor dictating that only 10 pounds per square foot would be allowed when hanging anything from the ceiling. This meant carefully evaluating the total weight and weight distribution of all the AVL components. With careful planning, and by employing AVL components with a high power/performance-to-weight ratio, all expectations of the client were met or exceeded within these strict limits.

Shortlisted - House of Worship Holy Trinity Cathedral APAC Location: Auckland, New Zealand Manufacturers: RCF, Yamaha, Chauvet, Cameo, Sennheiser, DPA Microphones, Electro-Voice, LightFactory Distributor: Direct Imports Installer: Intec Systems Two sets of the RCF VSA Series have been installed on the pillars, which essentially sit between the older Chancel area and the newer Nave area, firing outwards towards the Nave. The top arrays are VSA 1250’s and due to their position are able to disperse the sound all the way to the gallery. The lower columns are the VSA 2050’s, which cover the main Nave seating. RCF CS Series loudspeakers are used for infill of the first 10-metres of seating in the Nave, as well as throughout the Chancel. For the evensong services, it's got a pre-programmed preset, which loads up at a specific time every day and turns the system off again. An iPad interface is also used that communicates directly with the MTX processor, so the in-house engineer can tweak the functionality of the system, without needing to have the desk on. Then, for the Sunday services and larger events, someone will be operating the console. Moreover, the main columns are self-powered but the fill loudspeakers aren’t, so using Yamaha XMV Series amplifiers was needed, also a number of Sennheiser EW 500 G3 wireless systems and some DPA gooseneck and lapel mics. The cathedral saw some Chauvet LED wash moving heads, including eight QWash 4192’s, eight Ovation F-165WW fresnels and four Ovation F-95WW fresnels installed. These sat alongside some Cameo fixtures - four Flatpro 7’s and eight Flatpro Spots - to replace the lighting bars, while the original dimmers and conventional fittings were already in place from when the Nave first opened. The cathedral wanted a light music reinforcement system but their main requirement was speech clarity. Despite the bridge being removed as part of the new design, the main challenge was to achieve full and even coverage for the entire Nave, without interfering with stunning architecture in the older part of the cathedral. The Bishop Selwyn Chapel - or the gold room, as it is sometimes referred to, due to its gold ceiling - makes use of the RCF VSA Series, with more VSA 850’s being installed, coloured coded to the surroundings. The work in the Bishop Selwyn Chapel followed on directly from the work in the main church, so when we specified a very similar system using more VSA loudspeakers, another MTX processor, as well as the same Sennheiser EW 500 G3 wireless systems.

Winner - House of Worship Faith Promise The Americas
Location: Knoxville, USA Manufacturer: GLP Lighting / Visual Designer: Josh Holowicki Installer: E2i Design
The Faith Promise church sits in a broadcast campus. The end users were having issues with their existing lighting system and trusted E2i Design with a major lighting upgrade to the existing facility. E2i Design always approach a lighting design for a space based on the desired needs for how the client will utilise the space, as well as what their expectations are for a successful end result. For this project, the church wanted to reduce the number of fixtures in the air and move to an entire LED lighting package for all of their key lighting. In order to achieve E2i Design selected the X4 Tunable White version from GLP. Dubbed the X4 VW (for variable white) by E2i Design, this fixture boasts the perfect design for this project: Its moving head capabilities allowed to use the same fixtures for the live worship experience as well as when their pastor is teaching. In the past, without a moving head fixture, a whole set of fixtures for the band and worship leaders would have been required, on top of a completely separate set of fixtures for the teaching. The X4 VW has allowed E2i to reduce budget, fixture count and maintenance significantly, and the moving features opened up many possibilities never before available to E2i in a design. The variable white also has a perfect blend of warm and cold LED diodes allowing to perfectly blend the exact colour needed since most projects utilising video today no longer want ultra-warm colour temperatures, but rather something cooler, typically within a 4,500º colour temperature. In the past, they had 40 conventional incandescent fixtures providing the key lighting for their broadcast stage. Those fixtures required lamp changes and a ride up in a lift to refocus on a regular basis. E2i reduced down to 16 of the X4s which eliminated lamp changes and the need to manually focus fixtures all at the same time. Further fixtures were used for foot lighting for worship and teaching. E2i selected them for the similar variable white colour capabilities as the X4s, while providing a very soft and even fill on stage talent. This fixture is non-moving which for this application was of course not a requirement. The church is currently using an Avolites console to control lighting. The lighting design for this space was unique because of the way the worship centre is used. Not only is it utilised for live performance, but also is used to capture worship services to broadcast via web as well as to other church campus locations. Because of this unique use, it required E2i to think outside the box in terms of addressing this challenge. The actual installation of the product went very well with no issues present, and E2i’s real challenge was really to come up with the best possible lighting solution that could solve the user challenges. By having access to the GLP impression X4s VW, E2i was able to solve all the problems the design presented and provide the client with the best possible solution.
Shortlisted - Theatre Atlas Theatre & Wildlands Zoo Europe Location: Emmen, The Netherlands Manufacturers: d&b audiotechnik, Renkus-Heinz, Martin Audio, Clear-com, DiGiCo, Elation Professional, Powersoft, Symetrix Architect: Henning Larsen Installer: Jora Entertainment, Ampco-Flashlight A d&b audiotechnik Y8 line array system has been installed in a left-centre-right configuration with theatre productions in mind, this line array system is supported by d&b audiotechnik E-Series outfills, which delivers a clear, balanced sound for every seat in the theatre. The Y8 system can be easily replaced by simply placing it on dollies, therefore making room for the permanently-installed Renkus-Heinz Iconyx Live system. This expansive system from Renkus-Heinz extends throughout all public and back of house areas, including the venue’s black box theatre and, of course, the main auditorium. Two permanently installed IC Live arrays are positioned to the left and right of the stage, both comprising a single ICL-F-DUAL-RN and single ICL-F-RN. In the black box theatre, a d&b audiotechnik T-Series line array system is used with flexible grid systems, which allows the clusters to be installed in different configurations to support the multitude of different seating - and standing - arrangements. Plus, d&b audiotechnik MAX-II floor monitors, powered by D20 amplifiers, are used in all venues, too. The theatre’s control system includes DiGiCo consoles, with an SD8 and SD9 console used, along with D2 I/O racks, which can be used either separately or combined, as needed. With the DiGiCo consoles in place, the venue has a flexible, integrated system to deliver an outstanding performance for every
production or event. The DiGiCo consoles are connected to Lake LM44 processors, which connect to both Powersoft and d&b amplifiers to power the audio system. Engineers that visit the Atlas Theatre can set their own equalisation and delays via WiFi on a laptop. Signal routing can be patched in software and in hardware to optimise workflow and efficiency. For the Atlas Theatre’s paging and stage monitoring system, there are over 200 Martin Audio C48T, CDD5 and CD6 loudspeakers throughout the entire building. To power the system, Symetrix Radial processors send signals to Powersoft Ottocanalli 100V amplifiers, which are ideal for multi-zone applications in mediumto-large installs, such as this one at Atlas Theatre. The eightchannel amplifiers support any combination of lo-Z loudspeakers, mono-bridgeable channel pairs and 70V/100V Hi-Z distributed lines with no need for output step-up transformers. In almost all of the rooms within the building, there are Symetrix control panels for local volume control, while in selected rooms, source selection is available to listen to the main auditorium, the black box theatre or a local source. The Symetrix systems’ 40 input/88 output matrix also routes intercom, as well as movie and theatre surround effects through additional Symetrix Radius processors that perform the processing for the flexible acoustic reverb/surround system. Jora Entertainment installed over 170 Level Q7 IP LED Par fixtures from Elation Professional and the foliage areas are accentuated by coloured light from the Level Q7 IP LED Pars, which are all-weather IP65 rated and house seven 15W RGBW LEDs for full colour mixing. In addition, Elation Rayzor Q7 LED moving heads are used during the show for a variety of dynamic visuals from colour washes and chase effects, through to sharp beam looks. The Elation Professional fixtures are used for attractions indoors, too, highlighting their versatility. Since its completion, both the Atlas Theatre and Wildlands Zoo have been praised for its design and facilities, making them the go-to attractions in Emmen.

Actors’ radio mic signals are fed individually to the TiMax SoundHub from channel or group direct outs on the SD7T. All PA system delays are applied and dynamically managed by TiMax on a source-oriented basis, applying Haas effect delay-matrix over-delays to achieve localisation. The TiMax SoundHub unit receives MIDI Controller messages from the TiMax Tracker performer stage tracking system, whose UWB radar TT Tags worn by the actors are continually scanned by five TT Sensors located around the stage and auditorium. The multi-viewpoint topology of TiMax Tracker ensures robust redundancy against body and scenery blocking, as only two sensors at a time need to see a tag for tracking to be resolved. Proprietary TiMax delay-morphing algorithms vary precedence delays independently between each mic and the distributed d&b PA system to ensure accurate localisation continuously across the entire audience area. This immerses the audience more fully in a performance as the vocal reinforcement becomes transparent and stress-free, as it always coincides with the actors visual positions onstage,
achieving a level of authenticity and impact to match the high production standards which the FNO directors demand. The TiMax Tracker automation also renders the whole process operator-free, leaving the sound engineer to just concentrate on the mix. High proscenium imposed loudspeaker speaker siting constraints, which needed to be overcome in TiMax SoundHub Image Definition objects to achieve consistent localisations across deep stage thrust as well as main stage area. Versatile combination of automated plus manually adaptive image object programming ability in TiMax was central to achieving this. Use of first-wavefront reinforcement time-zero speakers, strategically located downstage and with mic signals levelpanned automatically by TiMax Tracker, helped to provide strong variable coincident reference anchors for each actor as they moved around the stage, to support the main delay system delay precedence localisation. Good location of TiMax Tracker Sensor positions to achieve optimum three-dimensional coverage and redundancy from five locations was necessary. Readily achieved without compromising architectural integrity, partly due to the distributed, multi-viewpoint nature of the TiMax Tracker system, which also provided inherent redundancy as only two sensors need to see an actors Tag for them to be tracked.

Shortlisted - Theatre Victoria Palace Europe Location: London, UK Manufacturer and Installer: J&C Joel Architect: Aedas Arts J&C Joel designed, manufactured and installed a series of ornate and decorative swags and curtains together with custom trimmings, including tassels and rope, throughout the theatre building. The brief was to ensure these met the requirements of leading theatre interior designer Clare Ferriby and Sir Cameron Mackintosh, owner and driving force behind the renovation of the Victoria Palace. In total there were 61 different areas within the auditorium that required drapery, which was made up of 66 swags, 66 curtains and six door window curtains. The drapes were all made from at least three layers of fabric including custom dyed Rishworth Velvet (VEL450), Copper Brilliant Organza (BRI001) and Damson Brilliant Organza (BRI002). All swags were finished with custom designed and dyed gold rope with different diameters for different areas, tie backs which had custom designed moulds painted to a specific RAL colour with custom-made tassels in the same shade of gold. Certain curtains were also hung on bespoke burnished brass poles with intricate finials. The main challenge for the project overall was the requirement to design, draw and get approval on a huge amount of drapery before the building was complete. Many of the spaces such as the boxes were undergoing refurbishment or new doorways were being built, so, access to these areas was limited until extremely late in the day. The knock-on effect was that we had
a short window in which to measure, redesign, redraw, receive approval and manufacture the drapes. We overcame these issues by utilising our highly skilled creative manufacturing team who worked tirelessly to ensure all drapes were completed on time and then packed into custom boxes to preserve the drapes whilst being transported to site. Due to little time between completion of installation and the opening night, the drapes had to arrive in pristine condition. There was also a knock-on effect on the installation, which was completed over three visits. The first two visits were to install the many batten fixes, including custom boxes to allow for the swags and legs to be fixed at the same level but behind on another whilst at the same time hiding the batten completely. These were completed in advance of the drapes being installed. The third and final visit was to install and, crucially, dress all of the drapery. The final installation took place over two weeks working through the night due to the technical rehearsals of Hamilton taking place during the day. The installation was challenging with a four-person crew working relentlessly to ensure the venue was looking immaculate in time for the opening night. The theatre was purchased and refurbished by Sir Cameron Mackintosh specifically to house record breaking American musical Hamilton. The ÂŁ50 million revamp restored the venue beyond its former glory and is now the jewel in the crown of the West End. It is arguably the most prestigious renovation in years and is a positive signal for the industry that musical theatre is alive and kicking.

Due to the complexity of the theatre design, delay speakers for the audio system were required featuring 32 Meyer Sound UP-4XP’s along with the newly release Galaxy 816 processors. Surround speakers behind the audience are made up of 34 Meyer Sound UPM-1XPs. They provide high sound pressure levels, extremely low distortion, and uniform directional control, yet are discreet enough to blend into the aesthetics - in fact they are hidden in the rear wall of the theatre. These speakers also work with the surround rings to produce even coverage. A second row of surrounds comprises 10 L-Acoustics 12XT loudspeakers, so between these two surround rings it’s possibly to get ample coverage for different imaging of effects and reverbs. Front-fill duties are taken care of by 24 Meyer Sound MM-4XPs, which are ideal in size and because they are waterproof and also low voltage, there is no need to worry about them being too close to the pool. Completing the loudspeaker line-up are eight K-array KP102’s and four K-array Anakonda KAN200+ flexible arrays, both of which are used as hidden fill loudspeakers. “The K-array products are ideal cosmetically because they blend in with the environment, the theatre designers were happy that the loudspeakers weren’t so intrusive of their design,” said Sebastian Hammond. Two K-array all-in-one KA84 audio power amplifiers look after power and processing needs for the K-array boxes. Amplification and control for L-Acoustics systems, is provided through the company’s amplified controllers - the LA8 and the LA4X. A total of 19 LA8’s and four LA4Xs are in place at La Perle and both amplifiers
are more than adequate for the theatre in terms of EQ’ing and delay. With the Meyer Sound cabinets being selfpowered all they require is loudspeaker management, which is provided courtesy of a BSS London Soundweb BLU-806 and six BLU-160’s. BSS is looking after all of our signal flow in terms of outputs to the PA, it’s helping us with routing, matrixing and also processing for certain elements. The amplifier and processor racks are kept in climate controlled rack rooms, therefore eliminating the possibility of them getting wet, which ultimately extends the longevity of the show. The lighting design for La Perle wasn’t a straightforward task, although a beautiful theatre it isn’t symmetrical and it isn’t linear, instead it’s full of curves, which presents many problems. Add the need for the fixtures to be silent or very quiet - a normal requirement in any theatrical space. A large Clay Paky inventory has been specified for La Perle including Sharpys, Super Sharpys, Alpha Profile 1500’s, Alpha Profile 800’s, Alpha Wash 1500’s, Alpha Beam 1500’s. Controlling the intelligent lighting is yet another industry standard, an MA Lighting grandMA. “For this kind of level of project you need a high-end, rider friendly product and it can handle four DMX universes,” Enrico Bagnoli said. Completely integrating the lighting with the video is probably the biggest problem to overcome - there is always conflict between the two but having a control platform such as the grandMA equipped Enrico with the best tools to overcome that challenge. La Perle is the region’s first resident show and is billed to be an unprecedented immersive production that will mark an iconic milestone for live entertainment in Dubai and the UAE as a whole.
Hotel Pullman Berlin Schweizerhof Europe Location: Berlin, Germany Manufacturers: eFour Media Architecture, MADRIX Distributor: Visionstage Installer: eFour Media Architecture Architect: Sundukovy Sisters Lighting / Visual Designer: Kardorff Ingenieure A volumetric, 3D light sculpture is what makes up the interior design of the entrance, bar, and restaurant of this five-star hotel. The key element of this install is the 18-metres wide and 10-metres deep 3D LED installation which consists of nearly 900 custom-designed, 360° viewable LED tubes, designed by eFour Media Architecture. The volumetric LED install with individually-controllable pixels is generated and scheduled using a MADRIX server that outputs DVI video data in ‘mapping mode’ to the central video processor of the LED install. The 3D light sculpture had to follow the main architectural design theme; hence why the content is based on animal and zoo elements. The various lighting scenes had to change during the course of the year to follow the seasons of the year, in addition to Christmas.
Since the entire installation is requested to run 24/7 and totally independently, a playback system was needed that incorporated an astronomic clock as well as a true calendar function that allowed auto-calculations of start dates of the seasonal content and events for every new calendar year. In its final programming, the 3D install displayed waving grass fields with butterflies, fishes swimming in waving water, falling leaves in autumn, as well as snowflakes, sparkles, and burning candles during the festive seasons. The vertical LED tubes were tailor made by eFour Media Architecture, based on a very detailed specification provided by the lighting consultants of Kardorff Ingenieure. The MADRIX software had to be extended with speciallyprogrammed macro functionality to allow for the use of the astronomic time and calendar events, and guarantee 24/7 independent operation. No less challenging was the fact that the entire installation has been executed whilst the hotel was kept open to the public, which put the installation on a very strict time schedule and the execution of the installation had to be divided into multiple phases. The project is a perfect example of how urban characteristics and modern and state-of-the-art technology can lead to a pleasant and exciting viewer experience.

With two-and-a-half times more floor space than the original, including its dining facilities and a pool deck terrace bar expansion. There are several hundred LED filament lamps to give the venue its retro vibe, a combination of LED wall lighting, recessed LED tape, profile and pin spots - all with colour mixing to allow for the variations in atmosphere that the venue demands. New for this installation is the Glasson Electronics LED Festoon over the expanded food court area, custom Studio Due 4000K IP rated LED bars for the exposed kitchen counter and live cooking stations, in addition to the Music&Lights MiniEclipse LED spots. The trademark ‘bottle wall’ has been revamped to feature LED matrix of 600 blinder pixels, with half beer bottles in front as a dramatic feature piece. The interior design is rich in textures - from exposed brickwork to used railway sleepers, green foliage and recycled shipping
containers. The lighting design works to enhance this character with theatrical flair in every area – all controlled on the same MA dot2 console. The bottle wall feature is driven by MADRIX DMX control and by using the dot2 to fully exploit MADRIX’s sound to light alongside operator driven programming. The entire lighting rig is LED, which includes all architectural and show lighting, maximising the power to output ratio and minimising maintenance and running costs. The show lighting is a comprehensive range from Music&Lights: PixieBeams, Luma 700 LED Profiles and Diamond 7 Zoom Wash heads. The venue also features large TV’s and a Panasonic projector for media content, ranging from sports to daily specials and inhouse branded visuals. The LED dimming solution is the iLight SCLED dimming with 72 dimming circuits, LSC APC12’s provide the hot power feeds to the show lighting with full remote DMX switching control and on board voltage and amp monitoring providing robust back of house infrastructure. From the outset, the organisers wanted to be sure that whilst retaining the iconic elements from the first Lock, Stock & Barrel, the second incarnation had unique touches of its own. There is a theatrical aspect to the design - taking into account the interior design detail and seeking to enhance every element to ensure longevity of interest for the diverse crowd it attracts.

One of the first orders from the company’s principal and CEO, Scott Gerber was to update the bar’s acoustics for a better distributed audio, one that matches the prestige of the structure. Global Audio Systems was tasked with the responsibility of this install as its owner, Jason Ojeda, had previously worked with the Gerber Group at several of their properties and entrusted the company with such an important project. Jason had firsthand experience using K-array in several projects prior and according to him: “It was simply the right fit for this job at Grand Central and would sound amazing.” With help from distributors K-array America, Jason arranged six Kayman-KY102 and one Kobra-KK52 loudspeaker line arrays for The Campbell installation, utilising the Kayman for its frequency response down to 90Hz. The system was designed to have an even and consistent coverage throughout the venue, distributing audio without any dead zones and this system was installed into custom wall sconces that were designed around the line arrays. “We knew we had to have amazing sound without having bulky speakers or losing audio quality. Scott and his team are ecstatic about the install. The design fits the venue and its aesthetic needs without sacrificing sound quality. K-array is simply amazing at what it does,” Jason concluded.

Location: Dorset, UK Manufacturers: Funktion-One Lighting / Visual Designer: Wolf Lighting Acoustician: Russell Kearney Installer: Audio Feed Ltd
Having already completed a successful Funktion-One installation in the Stone Hall at St. Giles House, Audio Feed was invited back by Nick Ashley-Cooper, 12th Earl of Shaftesbury, to create a subterranean club and music venue, complete with a world-class sound system. Located in the stately home’s vaulted beer cellar space, there were a host of challenges to overcome, not least designing a system that could deliver optimum coverage, while maintaining Funktion-One’s globally renowned quality. The rooms unusual dimensions - 24-metres long, but only 2.5-metres high and six-metres wide - made the most challenging acoustics that audio installer Audio Feed had ever experienced. Six Funktion-One Resolution 2SH skeletal speakers are suspended from the ceiling in three symmetrical pairs along the length of the room. Four Bass Reflex enclosures sit in front of the DJ booth - two BR-115s stacked atop two BR-121s - delivering a luxurious pounding depth to the mix. In the DJ booth, situated inside a giant repurposed 17 the century beer barrel that, according to legend, King Charles II hid in during the civil war, F-1201s provide monitors for a set mixed on the new PLAYdifferently Model 1 DJ mixer. The original acoustic testing by Russell Kearney found reverberance times of up to 4.5 seconds at 50Hz, so it was clear that drastic measures were required. With such acoustic challenges Funktion-One was chosen because of its precision in dispersion and its characteristic of needing little or no equalisation. Completing the audio provision are two F-1201s in the adjacent bar area and, behind the scenes, processing from a Funktion-One X04, plus an amp rack comprising a MC2 E-475, MC2 E-60 and MC2 E-100, all running through a Formula Sound ZMR-80 zone controller, concluding an all British install. A total of 250-metres of custom pixel mapped LED strips, controlled using Resolume Arena on 64 DMX universes. Installed on nine aluminum floating tracks across the vaulted 17th century ceiling. Given the age and importance of the building, great care had to be taken with the installation and the type of fixings used, which were all stainless steel. Perhaps most uniquely on this project, however, was the delay to allow for the relocation of a colony of protected Greater Horseshoe Bats that used the cellar as a hibernation site. The bats had moved in to the cellars during the fifty years that the house sat abandoned, prior to its current renovation. To mitigate the effects of the cellar space’s unusual dimensions, unforgiving surfaces, and vaulted ceiling, acoustic consultant Russell Kearney designed a treatment that would control the unusual acoustics, whilst maintaining the visual characteristic of the room. The design consisted of 168-metres of acoustic foam of varying thicknesses, arranged in five parallel ceiling strips that run the length of the main room in between the LED strips. In addition, a massive 24-inch thick multi-layered hinged bass absorber was used at one end of the space. Interspersed and illuminated by strips of LED, the panels combine with the Funktion-One speakers to add a modern dynamic edge to the distressed aesthetic of the original 16th Century brickwork. Already a popular designation for weddings and events, St Giles House has been confirmed as the site of a new national family festival to start in 2019.
Shortlisted - Sporting Venue Ford Field The Americas Location: Detroit, USA Manufacturers: Meyer Sound, Daktronics Installer: Parsons Electric Architect: ROSSETTI The new audio system was designed to address shortcomings that had plagued the original installation. Troubleshooting the old system was problematic as there was no comprehensive, computer-based diagnostic monitoring. In addition, there was no coverage on the playing field - highly desirable to pump up players in warmups, rental systems were needed to cover the field for special events in the off season. To remedy all shortcomings and boost power and performance to league-leading levels, stadium management selected a LEO Family system from Meyer Sound - the first in any NFL stadium. The main bowl system is anchored by a distributed ring of eight LEO Family line arrays, with a total of 100 LEO and LYON self-powered loudspeakers covering the majority of seating areas. Augmenting the main arrays are scoreboard delay arrays and corner fill arrays with an additional total of 36 LEOPARD compact linear loudspeakers. For deep bass music and commanding special effects, 24 1100-LFC low-frequency control units are deployed as cardioid arrays to provide directional control for convincing impact both in the bowl and - when a special preset is selected - also on the playing field. A separately addressable system of 18 LEOPARD loudspeakers blankets the playing field with high-level sound. Outside the main seating bowl of the stadium, in the acoustically problematic atriums at gates A and G, audio is delivered by pairs of Meyer Sound CAL column array loudspeakers with advanced beam steering technology, enabling precise control to minimise reflections from the expanses of glass and metal.
Daktronics of Brookings, South Dakota provided a new video system with more than 26,000 sq ft of displays, including new end zone screens measuring 39.5 ft high by 152 ft wide and featuring a 13HD pixel layout for crisp imagery and wideangle visibility. Flanking the main displays, four additional displays measure 13ft high by 59ft wide (with the same 13HD pixel layout) can be used individually or coordinated with the main displays for one continuous 270 ft presentation to show live video, instant replays, graphics and animations, and sponsorship messages. Also installed were two super column displays measuring 36.5ft high by 62.5ft in three large ribbon displays along the fascia of and an additional four ribbon displays along the seating fascia for a total of more than 5,000ft in length. The video portion of the main bowl renewal was a separate contract with installation by Daktronics. The system is zoned so that sections of the main bowl loudspeakers can be muted, coupled with the separately addressable on-field system, this allows the sound coverage to be custom tailored to any event. This flexibility is particularly important as the stadium is built into the side of a vintage warehouse now converted to offices. If the entire system is activated it can be distracting to office occupants, but with the new system the precise control of both system zoning and loudspeaker directionality allows rental of the stadium for events during weekday office hours.

Shortlisted - Best Sporting Venue Konya Büyükşehir Stadium Europe Location: Konya, Turkey Manufacturers: Hera LED, MADRIX Distributor and Installer: Hera LED Architect: Bahadır Kul Architects Lighting / Visual Designer: Hera LED Konya Büyükşehir Stadium, home to football team Konyaspor, is a multipurpose venue situated in Konya, Turkey. When Konya was under consideration as one of the host cities for future European Championships, construction of a brand new UEFA-compliant stadium was proposed. The façade is lit using MADRIX’s Sword Series, which is made up of four models - 30-50-100-150cm long LED tubes, loaded with RGB LEDs at a 100mm pixel pitch. In addition, the following products are used including the X-CV3 constant voltage LED draver, DS-4 Full Isolated Splitter, MADRIX Luna 8 and the MADRIX Key Professional. These tiles are painted in green and white, conforming to the colours of the local soccer team. Metal gutters pass through the façade and are used to define the geometric forms, to drain the roof water, and to install the linear LED lighting system. That is why, by night, it becomes something else entirely. The exterior turns into a large-scale LED media façade against the dark bringing out the asymmetrical design even more prominently. Fluid animations, moving visuals, and colourful and energetic effects are a highlight for visitors and passers-by alike. This project presented various challenges due to the nature of the building and its structures as well as the short installation time of three months during the winter season with heavy snowfall, this was overcome by a team of nine climbers.

Shortlisted Sporting Venue Wanda Metropolitano Europe Location: Madrid, Spain Manufacturer: Philips Lighting Architect: Cruz y Ortiz Arquitectos Constructor: FCC Construcción Atlètico de Madrid left the iconic Vicente Calderon after over 50 years to set up home at the new Wanda Metropolitano stadium. The 68,000-seat stadium, based in the San Blas-Canillejas district of Madrid, has given a new lease of life to the Community of Madrid – or La Peineta - stadium, which was originally opened in 1994 as part of Madrid’s unsuccessful bid to host the 1997 World Athletics Championships. The stadium, which had an approximate capacity of 19,000, held minor sports and cultural events for a decade until its closure in 2004. In 2011, Atletico Madrid revealed plans for the new stadium, before eventually playing their first game at Wanda Metropolitano in September 2017. Cruz y Ortiz Arquitectos designed the original La Peineta stadium back in 1990 and were again commissioned to significantly extend and revamp the venue, with the aim being to turn it into one of the best football stadiums in Europe. When it came to the new design, Cruz y Ortiz proposed a double design objective; they wanted to maintain the well-known, recognisable image, all while forming a harmonious combination between the extension and old design. This needed to be achieved while creating a stadium that would become synonymous with Atletico Madrid as a club. Once Wanda Metropolitano had been redesigned and built, the club had to ensure that the technology going into the venue was of the highest standard -
especially with the aim being to make it one of Europe’s five-star stadiums. One of the main aspects to consider was the lighting throughout the stadium, which led to Atletico Madrid signing a four-season agreement with Philips Lighting for the company to be their official lighting partner. As part of the agreement, Wanda Metropolitano was the first stadium in the world to benefit from Philips ArenaExperience multi-purpose LED stadia lighting system, which encompasses the LED lighting for the pitch, stadium façade and hospitality areas. The lighting is designed specifically for the stadium, bringing it to life for visitors from the approach right up to when they enter. The roof of Wanda Metropolitano is equipped with Philips VavaFlood LED lighting, which has the ability to display more then 16 million colours. The VavaFlood LED lighting is used in conjunction with the dynamic Philips ColorKinetics on the stadium’s façade to create spectacular light shows. The dynamic lighting system on the roof can be operated independently, too. The new Philips ArenaVision lighting system, with 336 Philips ArenaVision LED floodlights, is used to illuminate the pitch. The system meets all the latest La Liga, UEFA and FIFA broadcast standards, ensuring maximum quality for television transmission. Not only that, but the LED floodlights can also be synchronised in light shows before and after the match. Along with the roof, façade and pitch lighting, Philips provided Atletico Madrid’s Premium Neptuno and VIP hospitality areas with efficient, high-quality LED lighting, which delivers energy savings of more than 60%.

Winner - Sporting Venue Little Caesars Arena The Americas
Location: Detroit, Michigan, USA Manufacturers: Elation Professional, InterAmerica Stage Installer: Motor City Electric Lighting / Visual Designer: Illuminating Concepts, Crossfade Design
Designed by architectural and engineering firm, HOK architects, the 20,000-seat arena is part of District Detroit as the major new attraction in the city’s rapidly revitalising greater downtown. Lighting and multi-media design firm, Illuminating Concepts (IC), was the lighting designer on the project, responsible for lighting the public spaces through to the theatrical lighting in the bowl. The dynamic ceiling is just one part of the arena’s large integrated lighting network in which all lighting is interconnected – indoors and out – to act as one themed environment. Illuminating Concept’s design for the arena uses lighting to create a space that engages, guides visitors, creates moods and disseminates advertiser information. IC brought in production design company, Crossfade Design, a firm with extensive theatrical lighting and video experience, to handle the theatrical lighting elements, including the dynamic ceiling. The client wanted the arena bowl to be covered by a solid ceiling, rather than the typical black void of most arenas, but with challenges like HVAC and rigging to contend with, not to mention cost concerns, the solution wasn’t easy to find. The answer came in the form of SkyDeck, a tension wire grid system created by InterAmerica Stage. The open wire covering acts as a scrim over the bowl, a modular ceiling that can be reconfigured for any event. Although Crossfade Design tested several strip lights for the project, it quickly came to the conclusion that a custom solution was best. Only minimal features were required. The result was a custom spin-off of Elation’s six-colour SixBar 500 (1/2 metre) and SixBar 1000 (one metre) LED batten lights yet with RGBW LEDs only, a lower wattage and other design changes, such as moving connector locations for data and power, that allow it to keep a clean look. The remodified fixtures use 10W Cree RGBW multi-chip LEDs with each LED individually controllable, which makes a virtually unlimited number of designs possible. Custom mounting brackets were added to install the fixtures beneath 372 removable SkyDeck panels (four fixtures per panel). Each panel has four quadrants that can be lit separately and each fixture has a custom-made glare shield attached so that the lights won’t shine into the audience’s eyes as seating extends nearly up to the level of the ceiling. The custom Elation fixtures, dubbed the Quad Bar 500 and Quad Bar 1000, create a multi-coloured light ceiling that immerses guests in a state-of-the-art house lighting system like no other. Using the ceiling’s wire mesh as a scrim, the lighting can be used to engage the visitor, create different moods and project logos, advertising and other branding. The dynamic ceiling allows everyone to feel a part of the fun and has also eliminated the typical arena black hole look above the audience. Crossfade was also responsible for fixture addressing, all data and signal flow, including RDM, as well as initial programming of the lights. IC produced the design drawings and handled all of the coordination with InterAmerica Stage. Electrical contractor Motor City Electric installed the fixtures. Illuminating Concepts, Crossfade Design, InterAmerica Stage, Elation Professional, and Motor City Electric all collaborated on the project.
Shortlisted - Concert Hall Elbphilharmonie Europe Location: Hamburg, Germany Manufacturers: Meyer Sound, d&b audiotechnik, Riedel, Lawo, MA Lighting, ADUNAS, ETC Architect: Herzog & de Meuron Acoustician: Yasuhisa Toyota Installer: Amptown System Company In the Great Hall, the emphasis was on bringing out the pure sound of instruments and voices rather than installing a sophisticated sound system. With this in mind, just six Meyer Sound CAL 64 column array loudspeakers were specified and these are housed within a mushroom-shaped reverberator, which is suspended from the ceiling. The large majority of the hall is covered by these six CALs thanks to their beam steering technology; there are additional CAL 32 loudspeakers and support loudspeakers in the ceiling to cover the higher seats within the auditorium. d&b audiotechnik loudspeakers are used for events at NDR radio - which is a close partner of the Elbphilharmonie - so it made sense to specify these loudspeakers for the Recital Hall and the Kaistudio for continuity. To control sound reinforcement in the Great Hall, the Recital Hall and Kaistudio, five Lawo mc²36 digital mixing consoles were supplied and incorporated into the digital audio infrastructure, in a joint effort involving the manufacturer and the NDR - a North German radio and TV broadcaster. Lighting in the Grand Hall is housed on a circular lighting bridge mounted above the stage area. Classic theatrical fixtures from ETC and Robert Juliat were selected and installed behind a series of ceiling cut-outs covered with special glass. ETC Source Four profile spotlights are known for their flexibility in regards to beam angles and radiation characteristics and the Robert Juliat profile spotlights contain 2,000W lamps and are very reliable when it comes to distances up to 30-metres. Additionally, 37 ETC Desire D40 Tungsten LED spotlights were installed as downlights to provide high-intensity, warm-white light with a colour temperature of 3,000K, matching the effect of the ETC and Robert Juliat fixtures. In line with the tender contract, ASC implemented the power distribution for the lighting systems as well. This included connecting the ETC dimmers systems - comprising 560 circuits across the three concert halls - to the MA Lighting consoles and junction boxes, which are distributed throughout the venue and are used to isolate the control and power of a given lighting system, at any given time.

Shortlisted - Concert Hall Berlin State Opera Europe Location: Berlin, Germany Manufacturers: d&b audiotechnik, Meyer Sound, Panasonic, Sony, Extron Architect: hg merz Installer: Amptown System Company and Salzbrenner Media in a working community, ASC for the described media technology. Sound reinforcement in the Linden Opera is ensured by d&b audiotechnik speakers, which are controlled by system-specific final stages, with integrated DSP controller and 40 Meyer Sound MM-10-XP and 120 Meyer Sound MM-4 miniature wide-range speakers in the passive version. Mounted on mobile tripods, proven Meyer Sound UPAs can be used in any number of selected spots to create various additional reinforced sound scenarios. Virtually out of sight 40 d&b E12 2-way high-power speakers are integrated in the lighting hoists, the hall ceiling, the proscenium bridge, and in the reverberant gallery. Four d&b Yi10P build-in speakers and two E8 speakers are accommodated in the proscenium arches behind the painted sound-permeable fabric cover. The centre cluster involves six d&b T10 speakers. Above the proscenium, the foremost area of the opera stage, 12 d&b T-SUBs ensure that the bass is heard and felt everywhere in the hall. Amptown System Company installed a pounding bass Vi7p speaker with two V-SUBs to the right and left to reinforce sound feeds from the backstage area. The Surround System A 3D audio system made by Astro Spatial Audio is used to create special scenic effects which are additionally supported by two built-in SARA II Premium rendering engines. These engines are incorporated in the Nexus audio routing system via 128 MADI
channels respectively and are available to all of the speakers for sound reproduction. For the Linden Opera rehearsal stages Amptown System Company supplied nine mobile media racks equipped with an IN 1608 Extron audio/video routing matrix as a AV signal selector switch for Blu-Ray, CD and PC source feeds, and wireless microphones. To ensure clear sound and stable transmission, Linden State Opera was fitted out with a digital wireless radio system, with 34 channels from the new Axient digital series by Shure; that will be upgraded to the controllable ADX transmitter variant in the near future. Operational safety being a crucial requirement of the Lindenoper specifications, the cutting-edge wireless system by Shure was found to be the best choice as it actively ensures reliable signal quality and provides extensive signal coverage within an environment characterized by a multitude of RF transmitters. The new radio transmission equipment for the opera house included 34 pocket and eight handheld transmitters from the Axient Digital series. An in-ear system from the proven PSM 900/1000 series by Shure with 40 receivers is complementing the equipment. Amptown System Company installed a fibre-based HF distribution system made by The Wireless Works in the Unter den Linden Opera which provides for all of the HF signals to be transmitted to the various areas without losses and ensures that this crucial requirement is met. High frequency connection of the stage and the auditorium to the two building services equipment centres is implemented via an optic fibre infrastructure. The same applies to the foyer, the Apollo hall – venue for readings and small chamber concerts – and the walkways for the staff. The open system is an important feature of Amptown System Company system integration involving distributed remote units which operate bidirectionally radiating the HF signals to the individual parts of the building and receiving them from the locations involved. Several Panasonic AW-HE 130 cameras are connected with suitable LWL converters via an Extron HD-SDI FOX matrix which is displayed on Sony LCD and OLED monitors.

Shortlisted - Concert Hall Elbphilharmonie Europe Location: Hamburg, Germany Manufacturers: Gerriets GmbH Architect: Herzog & de Meuron Acoustician: Yasuhisa Toyota Installer: Gerriets GmbH The Grand Hall of the recently opened world famous concert hall is designed to have optimal acoustics for classical music. Each of the 10,000 unique acoustic panels that line the ceiling, walls and balustrade adds to the wonderful acoustic appearance of the concert hall. Nonetheless it is important that the hall can be acoustically transformed to host events other than concerts in the classical music genre. This acoustic transformation includes reducing the reverberation time in the hall and avoiding early reflections from the balustrades’ back walls. Therefore, a variable acoustic mechanism, developed by German company Gerriets, had to be included in the hall. In past projects variable acoustics has often been achieved by using curtain or roller banner systems, both installed on the ceiling of the hall. In the case of the unique structure of the Elbphilharmonie’s grand hall, attaching such systems to the ceiling was no option because of the unique surface created by the acoustic tiles. A large enough absorption area had to be introduced to adjust the acoustics of the hall to be fitting for jazz or rock and
pop concerts. A new product had to be designed to change the acoustics by the push of a button: acoustic panels which can be raised out of the parquet floor. These 84 banners in the grand hall were specially designed for the Elbphilharmonie and are used on a weekly basis to transform one of the most famous concert halls in an event space to host any other kind of concert. The absorption banners had to blend in into the stunning atmosphere of the Grand Hall. Therefore the surface of the banners had to match the unique acoustic tiles in colour and structure. But also mechanical needs had to be met, such as tensile strength, flame retardancy and of course the acoustical properties. Gerriets’ engineering and acoustic specialists came up with a solution that is completely invisible in the retracted state and which blends in with the Elbphilharmonie’s unique interior design when in use. The banners had to be integrated in the parquet flooring and had to be invisible in the lowered state. Therefore the parquet floor itself is used as the top part of the banner mechanism. The complete mechanism is hidden underneath the parquet floor and under the surrounding wall elements. The small hall and recital studio have been equipped with variable acoustics. In these venues traditional elements such as acoustic drapery and roller banners included in the ceiling of the small hall were used.

Winner - Concert Hall Pierre Boulez Saal Europe
Location: Berlin, Germany Manufacturers: Global Design Solutions, GDS, ETC Installer: Amptown System Company Architect: Frank O. Gehry Lighting / Visual Designer: L´Observatoire International, Florian Schaller, IBS Schaller Ingenieurbüro, Acoustician: Yasuhisa Toyota
Pierre Boulez Saal, which accommodates 680 visitors, is used both as a location for students and as a commercial-purpose concert hall, with its own program of musical events. It is an ideal venue for soloists, chamber music and small orchestras. The oval design is characterised by two ellipses - the axes of which are offset against each other so as to create the impression that the tiers are floating weightlessly in space. The Japanese sound artist, Yasuhisa Toyota, is responsible for the acoustics of the hall. The venue’s public call for tenders included the audio system, as well as the stage and hall lighting. Having responded to the voice alarm specification prepared by the specialist planner, Florian Schaller, with a proposal that combined state-of-theart voice alarm and stage management equipment in an innovative approach, Amptown System Company Berlin was awarded the job. ASC Berlin cooperated with PAV GmbH in installing a fully digital DSM40 voice alarm system certified to DIN VDE 0833-4, which is interconnected with a fire alarm system certified according to ISO DIN 14675. Apart from its principal application, it also allows for generating public addresses and background music and offers a great variety of options concerning volume, EQ, delay etc. The intercom system was customised and can be operated via an ADUNAS media control system just like a stage management system can. The classical separation between hall and stage light does not exist here unambiguously, but flows smoothly into each other. Therefore, all lights and headlights can be controlled individually. All of the lights and spots can be controlled individually and used either as a hall or a stage light. Control does not treat these applications separately, it may vary between the two any time. The cable ducts are discreetly concealed behind the wood paneling and installed so as to ensure EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) and avoid any interference with the A/V media equipment. Wherever possible, the LED ballasts and the electronic light control equipment were transferred from the concert hall to the central multimedia rack and dimmer room to minimise any such effects.
ASC had involved Global Design Solution, an expert for customised light and control solutions, to ensure that the high standard set by architect, Frank O. Gehry, with respect to the sophisticated lighting equipment, was met. Working closely together ASC, Florian and GDS succeeded in developing a tailor-made lighting arrangement. ASC integrated numerous special structures that had been designed as requested by the architects into the overall system. These lights are integrated both in the tier area and in the acoustic ceiling. The lights in the acoustic ceiling are conveniently accessible via the grating of the technical equipment level and easy to reach in an accessible duct (catwalk) and manipulate for maintenance purposes. 79 LED profile spotlights from the ETC Source Four product family (Tungsten, series 1) are used to light the ceiling above the ellipsoidal tier area. Light in the required brightness of 1,000 lux minimum from the same spotlights will cover the stage area as well. Along with the acoustic ceiling transparent glass inserts in the spotlight openings form a continuous reflection surface, which ensures perfect sound. The Source Four LED spotlights can shed light at angles between 25° and 50° from within the ceiling and provide warm white light for scenic lighting. These spotlights will light up the protagonists on the stage directly without producing shadows. GDS lights are integrated in the outer circle above the stage, below the tiers, in the corridors, at the doors and at the steps. Both the hall and the safety luminaires use LED lamps and are manufactured to meet the highest and most advanced standards. Like the scenic lighting, they are managed via the ADUNAS media control system. An essential aspect in the planning and tendering phase was to ensure the freedom from interference of the microphones, among other things, by the acoustic influences of the electronics and the cable routes through inductions (EMC influences). There were three solutions: outsourcing of LED ballasts and lights in the dimmer room outside the concert hall; separate routing of AV technology to other trades with the widest possible distances; and cable routing of all cables in covered metal cable trays or in Stapa tube. With a size of 850 sq metres and a
