GM Architects has revealed its design inspiration for The Nile Boat, a restaurant and events complex that will take to the water in late 2021. Envisioned by the firm’s founder, Galal Mahmoud, the venue will be moored alongside Cairo’s upmarket Maadi suburb.
Taking cues from the traditional boats of Ancient Egypt – notably the dahabeeyahs, which were built from slender papyrus stems – the project honours Mahmoud’s commitment to contextual immersion, by reinterpreting the river’s history in a contemporary style.
“I have a great affinity for this location because both of my parents are Egyptian,” Mahmoud explains. “The design inspiration came to me while listening to my mother talking about her memories of Cairo in the 1950s and in particular the boats that sailed the Nile during that period. I aimed to channel that nostalgia.”
The complex is clad in vertical panels of wood and metal that evoke the papyrus stems, with an adjustable screen that filters the intense sunlight of the summer months.
Floor-to-ceiling windows on the lower level enable guests to take in the views of the river, while upstairs, large balconies provide space for al fresco events. For the interiors, the brief was to create a relaxed and sophisticated lounge atmosphere, with GM Architects once again looking to Egyptian traditions for inspiration. As such, the scheme will blend classic and contemporary, characterised by colourful and furniture and artwork showcasing the region’s rich cultural heritage.
“Places like this are common in Cairo, but we have added a twist to make it even more luxurious and magical,” adds Mahmoud, who confirms that there will be a rooftop beach club and swimming pool, as well as a lounge bar and seafood restaurant on the middle deck. Companies and private groups will also be to hire a large banquet hall for exclusive events.
