Architecture, Planning and Design
MONEO BROCK Moneo Brock is an international architectural, planning and design firm of versatile professionals committed to the identification and implementation of sustainable solutions, with great faith in the promise of good design. We begin our work with a rigorous analysis of the functional requirements of the project in question, setting high standards for the optimization of resources. Convinced that a fundamental concept must be elaborated for each project, we design specifically architectural solutions wherein linguistic and spatial structures harmonize in a coherent whole. When working in cities, we count as the project’s first task the repair or enhancement of the existing urban context and the enlivening of bordering streets. We give great importance to urban design and to the creation of public space as a social good. When working outside the city, we design our interventions to protect and preserve the natural beauty that we find; the new, constructed landscape is designed to flow from our projects and connect holistically to the surrounding terrain.
< Museum of Modern Art and Architecture, Stockholm. Rafael Moneo and Moneo Brock collaborated on the architectural design.
Each project’s local climate is analyzed in detail so that energy efficiency can be assured, and the social and economic context is thoughtfully reviewed so that all conditions for true sustainability can be met. Finally, the construction details and the selection of materials are always rigorously controlled in order to be in concordance with the project’s fundamental concept.
We are sensitive to the synergies that emerge in collaborative processes, viewing teamwork as fundamental to the creation of great work. We have extensive experience collaborating with large teams of engineers, consultants and specialists in the production and coordination of architectural projects, from conceptualization through construction completion. We have completed projects of varying scales, both public and private, and our work has been widely published in international media. We view each job as an opportunity to create a unique structure that can transform a part of the world, no matter the scale. Moneo Brock has broad experience working on a variety project types, including: Museums Educational Architecture Religious Architecture Urban Infrastructure Rehabilitation Residential Architecture Interior Design With its main office in Madrid, Spain, Moneo Brock has additional representation in New York and Mexico.

COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY NW CORNER BUILDING Located on the northwest corner of the University’s historical campus designed by McKim, Mead and White in 1897, the building is carefully integrated in the campus as well as the New York City streetscape. Constructed above an existing gymnasium, the site conditions posed a significant structural challenge, requiring that the new building span over the 125 foot-wide facility. This structural feat became the defining gesture of the project. Besides providing critical program spaces for the University, the building also forms a new gateway to the Morningside campus, incorporating in its northern end a fluid sequence of bright naturally-lit spaces along a path from the street corner to the Campus level some 10 meters higher. On this project Rafael Moneo and Moneo Brock collaborated on the architectural design, managing the project throughout the process of design and construction.

ESPACIO FUNDACIÓN TELEFÓNICA This museum project for Fundación Telefónica, the cultural institution of Spain’s largest telephone company, occupies four floors in the historic Telefónica Building at the top of Madrid’s most central street, the Gran Via. To address the difficult relationships between the reclaimed spaces of the old building, we designed a central, cohesive circulation path that connects all galleries and cultural spaces on the upper floors to one another and to the street. Parts of five of the existing floor plates were demolished and a spiral staircase inserted in the void, weaving through an organic, sculptural form which serves simultaneously as a lateral brace for the building’s façade and structural support for the stair. The galleries take their form from the shape of the building. On this project Moneo Brock Studio collaborated with Quanto Arquitectura.

PARISH CHURCH IN PUEBLO SERENA The volumetric concept of the church derives from traditional church plans, and the design presents recognizable architectural features taken from early Christian temple prototypes, such as the bell tower, the stained-glass windows, the frontal altar, the baptistery, the choir, the three chapels and the lateral courtyard. The church’s main entry opens right onto a plaza, which functions as an annex to the church. Above the entry canopy, the façade is a large flat wall, an emphatic and plane, declarative of the otherness of the space within: the sacred space of the church interior. The plan is that of a basilica, with a rectangular central nave some 15 meters high. Behind the baptistery a long glass wall runs the length of the nave giving views of an enclosed patio. Above this area is a version of a rose window. To the southeast, three small chapels each enjoy daylight from high skylights. Finally, above the altar is a forth skylight, whose light washes down behind an inclined panel cut into four sections to reveal a large Latin cross. The interior design, also by Moneo Brock, is fully integrated with the architecture.

LABORATORIES BUILDING UNIVERSIDAD DEL ROSARIO The Quinta Mutis Campus in the “el Chapinero” neighborhood is one of El Rosario University’s three campuses in Bogotá. This institution is one of the most prestigious universities in South America, and with this project it intends to advance as the premier center for scientific learning and research. The building can be regarded as a two-volume composition. The taller volume housing laboratories and research spaces has been facetted to react to the city of Bogotá and the specific environment of “el Chapinero”, while the lower volume adapts to the street and the surrounding buildings, some of historical value for the city. The importance of the natural landscape and Colombia’s rich botanical history will be felt in this open area with panoramic views; the plaza is not only open to the common area of the campus below, but to the city and its inhabitants as well, being accessible from the street by an open architectural promenade. Sustainable design and flexibility are a priority for the University, so naturally lit rooms, fluid common spaces and easy ventilation are all principal motifs for the project.

PLAZA DE ESPAÑA The Plaza de España is a large public square in Santo Domingo created just inside one of the principal entrances to the Colonial City. We have to imagine this space in the past surrounded by a lively city, characterized mainly by its marketplace. Once this marketplace was transformed into a square, the citadel of Don Diego de Colón began to function as the main architectural element, inasmuch as the perimeter enclosing it unified the different activities. The aim of our proposal is to reclaim the continuity that once existed between the gate of Don Diego and the city within the walls, reinforcing the monumental quality of the gate by providing full accessibility and improved amenities. The new configuration of the square allows for different events and stage configurations. The green spaces have been reinforced throughout the intervention, creating shadows and microclimates with dense vegetation. The Plaza de España is a place where children can play, where adults can enjoy music, where tourists can experience the city, where readers can find a quiet place, and where history lovers can satisfy their interest; a square for everyone that preserves the vibrant city’s history. On this project Moneo Brock collaborated with Rafael Moneo and Harari Landscape Architecture. Location: Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
TIANJIN ARTS COLLEGE Our approach to the complex challenge of designing the expansion of the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts relies both on our knowledge and experience of campus architecture as well as a detailed analysis of contemporary and historical Tianjin. Tianjin’s campus presents a particular challenge because it belongs both to the heart of the old city as well as to the rapidly evolving contemporary one and must balance the scale of the historical urban fabric with that of today´s modern city. On this project Rafael Moneo and Moneo Brock Studio collaborated on the architectural design.

SKELLEFTEÅ CULTURAL CENTER AND HOTEL From the Classical latin meaning ”in the center of events”, In Medias Res is an architecture and design project that establishes the new cultural center as the place for action, right in the middle of Skellefteå city in the north of Sweden. It is a flexible space with 5 elements: theatre, museum, art gallery, library and hotel. Light streams through the construction via a glass facade and several courtyards. The short period of a Nordic light longed for during the winter is allowed to flow through the space. The height of the hotel makes it a beacon during the winter. The building has been conceived upon a simple but powerful tectonic approach: a crafted glass prism upon a wooden structure is carefully placed on a granite base. Consistent with goals of social and ecological sustainability we have selected Nordingrå Granite, typical for the region, and local Swedish spruce.

GERMAN SCHOOL OF MADRID This proposal takes maximum advantage of the site’s position at the city’s edge. The open areas at ground level and the building’s forms engage the landscape of the Sierra to the north. The complete use of the building’s roofs as terraces, together with its sinuous, meandering form, serve to effectively treat the building as landscape, while at the same time amplifying the area of outdoor patio space available to the students (63% greater than that required by the program). This last effect allows interior patios and terraces at ground level to be developed as greener, more heavily planted spaces than would otherwise be possible, enhancing the campus feeling of the school. The unfragmented, continuous nature of the building ensures optimum functionality, while the variegated form of its layout ensures that each area is given an individual spatial character. Corridors alternate between single-loaded and double-loaded, and every level is given unique views, so that each area of the school has a different identity. The school projects a welcoming presence, offering users a sequence of spatial experiences characterized by openness and interconnectedness, ideal for learning and growth.

MULTI-PURPOSE BUILDING For this multi-functional building next to the well-known “Four Towers” at the end of Madrid’s Paseo de la Castellana, we sought an iconic and daring proposal. The site is heavily conditioned by the presence of four floors of subterranean parking built for a Municipal project never completed, enormous foundations which we were determined to make use of. The design for the former project was a great disk alluding to the setting sun behind the Madrid Sierra, visible from the building site. As a subtle homage, our project presents the negative of that image, a concave “base” on which the solar disk might rest. The majority of the new building’s area was destined for municipal offices; hence our proposal for an emblematic and recognizable structure that proved all the while highly practical. It was also conceived as a landmark in building sustainability with its active roof structure for heating and ventilation purposes. The 51.680 m2 of built area for offices are surrounded by large plazas that would give this neighborhood its first significant consolidated public space. The plaza that faces west has the same inclination as the square in front of the Pompidou Center in Paris square and the same plan as the main square in Siena. Around the perimeter of this great public space we placed a long commercial area covering 2.500 m2. A monumental stairway joins the two squares and provides frontal views of the mountains. BOSQUE DE ACERO This enclosed pavilion and surrounding park is situated on a 35-acre site bordered by the JĂşcar and Moscas Rivers and the historic Spanish city of Cuenca. The park project rehabilitates the abandoned natural landscape with the construction of performance spaces, a skating rink, a bar and restaurant in a cluster of historic buildings and a grand pavilion to be used for events and exhibitions, and during the city’s weekly markets and annual fair. Composed of 23 pentagonal modules that together form a structural network, this steel and glass pavilion addresses the relationship between the natural beauty of the landscape and the adjacent urban fabric. The geometrical form of these modules was born of a search for an equilibrium between the repetition of a unit element and a composition of a whole, which in the end creates a modular structure in which the module is no longer distinguishable.

A1 GAS STATION This service station is located on the A-1 highway, one of Spain’s 6 major national highways, near the town of San Agustin de Guadalix approximately 30 km outside of Madrid. The project is comprised of three curvilinear canopy structures and a rectilinear building which houses, in addition to the service station’s facilities, a full-service restaurant. In the 1940’s and 1950’s the design of service stations exuded optimism and modernity, employing cantilevers and projections to give a sense of magic to the spaces below. Perhaps the difference between those service stations and this one is that ours has a more playful character, thanks to the curved shape of the canopies. It is not only a shelter: it is fluid movement, clearly looking to the natural landscape of rolling hills in the distance. In this project the program calls for the structure to act as signage, but while attending to this we also strived to create an architecture that is responsive and respectful of its surroundings. The canopies are seen from afar like birds or clouds on the horizon, hovering between the sky and the land.

THERMAL BATHS `TERMAS DE TIBERIO´ The Baths at Panticosa are located in the dramatic Valle del Tena of Aragon, where mountain peaks near the project site hold snow throughout the year. Waterfalls, rivers and streams cut the surface of the mountains and the valleys, while underground the aquifer mixes with thermal springs from deep beneath the surface of the earth. In designing the Baths building we have sought a balanced response to both the natural setting and the urbanized context on the other. The program is complex, and the municipal zoning limits require that much of the floor area be located underground, making the provision of natural light and views of the surroundings to the maximum area of the plan a design priority. The carving out of the building volume and the strategic location of windows serve to connect the interior spaces with the mountain landscape, giving the visitor a series of orientating cues, while the overlapping ribbons envelop and blend the spaces as they weave through the interior.

MERCER HOTEL Occupying a series of old medieval buildings in Barcelona’s historic Barrio Gótico, the Hotel Mercer elegantly blends the old with the new. The project restores the masonry walls that once belonged to the city’s fortifications, parts of which date back to Roman times. The dialogue between the old walls and the new structures is an instrument by which the traveler experiences a part of the story of Barcelona. The hotel is structured around the original courtyard, which has been preserved and planted with citrus trees. Most of the rooms have balconies towards either the courtyard or the street, so natural light abounds. The interior design is modern, but at the same time subdued and respectful of its setting. Moneo Brock contributed the interior design to the architecture project developed by Rafael Moneo.

LAS MERCEDES HOTEL The Hotel Las Mercedes will be built in the historic center of Santo Domingo on a site with a number of valuable older structures. To the outside, all the existing facades are conserved and recovered, respecting the urban scale of the city and revaluing the traditional architecture. Inside, the new complex will revolve around the majestic trees in the interior of the colonial patio; special emphasis is placed on the conservation of both the main Colonial Era courtyard, and the exuberant local vegetation typical of Caribbean climates. A dialogue is established between the existing and new constructions based on a succession of patios around which the hotel program, which includes 140 rooms distributed over five floors, revolves. The connection between the island’s own architecture and the new intervention has been carefully studied.

CASA TEC 205 The Casa TEC 205 is located very close to the Chipinque ecological park in Monterrey, an urban landscape dominated by the Sierra Madre. This house is the first prize in a raffle organized every year by the Technological University of Monterrey to raise funds for its students. The house design preserves four large extant trees on the site. Now embedded in the house, the trees characterize the spaces they inhabit. Major interior spaces enjoy direct connections to their own corresponding outdoor spaces, each associated with a different landscape, a unique character and quality of light. In order to gather these outdoor spaces into the project, a series of large wall planes that intersect in the house’s center project into the surrounding outdoor space, moving continuously between the interior and the exterior of the house. This constructivist assembly allows the walls to be read as independent, plastic elements, effectively blurring the distinction between inside and outside. We have always admired the use of color in Mexico, from its vernacular architecture to that of the masters Luis Barragån and Ricardo Legorreta. We have applied strong colors to these walls not only because we often use color in our work, but clearly as recognition and homage to this great heritage as well. Location: Gross area:

HUDSON STREET LOFT This project offered us the opportunity to concentrate on the arrangement of richly textured elements in the context of a largely proportioned and generally sparely articulated space. The raw space of the loft presented two principal spatial problems. First, the relationship of daylight to the plan is highly biased: the windows are exclusively on the east wall. This unilateral supply of daylight forced us to place all the major living spaces along the window wall, potentially robbing the western areas of the plan of valued light. The second challenge was given by the position of the entrance at the top of the pyramidal plan, which offered the visitor a complete view of the space at the moment of entry. Finally, colors and materials were selected to conserve the clean, uncluttered effect produced by the planimetric and sectional design and favored by the clients.
