or the second consecutive year, Shell Knob was recognized as the ‘Best Place to Escape’ in Missouri by Expedia, one of the world’s leading travel companies. The Expedia Viewfinder blog features travel inspiration on destinations in the U.S. and across the globe. Expedia’s staff writers sought out locations that provide the best opportunity to relax, recharge and enjoy a real getaway. The website article includes a photograph of Table Rock and one of its campgrounds. The blog mentions that Table Rock is one of the best fishing spots in the country. Shell Knob is praised for its slower pace and relaxing atmosphere and promotes hiking and its resort amenities. “It was already an honor to get this one year ago, so to get it a second time really shows people’s interest in coming to the area and how it affects them,” said Twilia Harrison, director of the Shell Knob Chamber of Commerce. “When people come here once, they always want to come back. There’s something about this area. There’s no hustle-bustle or any stop lights or traffic, and the only time anyone here is sad is when they have to leave.” Stonewater Cove, Pilot Knob Conservation Area and The Red Barn are specifically mentioned in the online article. Lily Rogers, author of the article said Table Rock Lake is the perfect spot for taking in nature’s quieter beauties. “And, Shell Knob is just the right place to settle in and take life easy,” she said. “Calm nights in a cozy cabin, lazy days on the lake, and spending time meeting friendly locals sounds like the right prescription for an ideal escape.” Shell Knob is honored to have been chosen for this recognition from knowledgeable travel experts. Brenda’s Blossoms and Moore bringing color to Shell Knob Flower, gift shop opens in Red Barn building BY KYLE TROUTMAN editor@cassville-democrat.com

Ask Shell Knob native Brenda Moore what is her favorite thing to do and her answer is simple — put smiles on people’s faces. A jack of all trades over the years, Moore said it was always her dream to open her own flower and gift shop, and her dream has been realized with the April 1 opening of Brenda’s Blossoms and Moore. Located in the Red Barn building at 25114 Hwy. 39 in Shell Knob, Moore said flowers and arrangements are her main service, but her shop offers other things. “This is just my happy place,” Moore said. “I’ve always worked for flower shops, but never owned one. I want this to be a peaceful environment where people can shop for giftware and fresh flowers and plants. “We try to do as many local arts and products as possible, like all our soaps and lotions, home decor, bird houses, dog care line and signs. I think it’s important to support local artists and gift-makers. I try to buy all my products from local suppliers.” Moore has lived in Shell Knob for more than 60 years, minus one year she left the area. She still lives in the house in which she was born. “I was a photographer for 10 years with Watson’s Photography Shop and worked in a number of different flower ships,” she said. “And, I helped run the Greg Fulp Memorial Youth Camp

for more than 30 years.” Moore said she opened the shop just to see the smiles on customers’ faces. “I like to make people happy,” she said. “It’s amazing to see the expressions on their faces when they receive a bouquet. That reinforces the belief that I am doing what I want to do.” Moore runs the business herself full time, but she gets plenty of help from family and friends. “All my family is involved,” She said. “I have nieces, daughters, my daughter-in-law and many friends who help. I have all kinds of love and support.” Moore said the best part of the business to her is making arrangements. “My favorite part is definitely putting floral arrangements together,”

I get a kick out of watching someone receive a gift more than anything.” Brenda’s Blossoms and Moore is open seven days per week, with hours corresponding to Red Barn. Moore said if she is not there, people may enter in Red Barn and visit her shop, and all payments are handled at the Red Barn register. For more information about the shop, people may reach Moore at

‘Let Freedom Ring’ Boat Parade returns Chamber reviving July 4 lake tradition, offering prizes BY KYLE TROUTMAN editor@cassville-democrat.com

For boating enthusiasts, what could be better than a day on the lake? On July 4, what can be better is winning some money, as the “Let Freedom Ring” Boat Parade is making a comeback in Shell Knob. Carrie Brown, organizer of the event, said the Shell Knob Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the event, offering $600 in prize money, plus gift bags. “First place will get $300, second will get $200 and third will get $100,” Brown said. “Boats will be judged on the ‘Let Freedom Ring’ theme, color and creativity.” People may enter by finding a form

on www.shellknob.com closer to July 4, or by calling Chamber Director Twilia Harrison at 417-858-3300 or emailing info@shellknob.com. “You don’t have to enter to participate, but you do have to enter to be judged,” Brown said. “Each boat will be given a number for judging, and will also get a gift bag. There is no fee, and one boat will win a free Shell Knopoly game in their gift bag.” Brown said the parade had gone strong for many years, but participation began to dwindle, and she is hoping a time change will help. “We are starting at 11 a.m., and I think having it earlier in the day will help with entries, because people can still spend the day on the lake afterward,” she said. “We hope to have at least 50 entries, but we want to get as many as we can.” Brown said Harrison is the person who got her on deck as an organizer. “I walked in the Chamber one day

and Twilia said, ‘I want to bring back the boat parade. Will you do it?’” Brown said. “We are encouraging any individuals, businesses, organizations or churches to participate. They can advertise their business or organization just like in a regular parade. It’s fun and easy. People just have to show up.” Brown said the plan for the parade is to start at the cove west of Point 21,

go under the bridge and turn around at Needles Eye and go back to Point 21. That route is still being finalized. “That’s likely how it will go, but we will have a map put together for all the entrants with the final route,” Brown said. For more information about the parade, people may contact Harrison at the Chamber.

A beginner’s guide to night fishing at Table Rock Lake

BY CHRIS GIBBONS Night time bass fishing became popular in the 1960’s. Bass fishing during the day developed in Europe and migrated west to the United States. Night time bass fishing has several benefits over day time bass fishing. • Fewer Anglers • Peaceful • Ability to catch larger bass • Enhanced Bass feeding patterns • Weather patterns are calm • Enhanced Moon phases Night time bass fishing does have some downfalls? • Angler safety due to no daylight • Boater safety • Debris not see in the water • Sounds magnify • Pest/bugs

Arena

Table Rock Lake is an artificial lake known as a highland reservoir located in the Ozarks of Southwest Missouri. The Army Corps of Engineer completed a damn for flood control in 1958. The normal pool of Table Rock Lake is 917 feet with a flood pool of 931 feet. The normal pool hosts a vast 43,000 acres and the flood pool host a vast 52,000 acres with depths reaching 200 foot. Table Rock Lake is a popular attraction near the tourism mecca of Branson Missouri. The lake is home to many marinas where patrons can rent boat, jet skis, and pontoons. The lake is fed by 4 major tributary river arms. The White River that comes from Beaver Lake, the Kings River, The James River and The Long Creek. The lake varies according to season for surface water temperature. • Spring: 56-77F • Summer 85-90F • Fall 71-82F • Winter 42-47F This variety of temperatures changes how the bass angler would adapt their fishing tactics, bait types, and fishing locations. Table Rock Lake water clarity is well known to be clear. The normal visibility on the main lake can reach sometimes down 30 to 40 feet. The river arms are more stained with visibility sometimes down to 6 inches.

Methodology

Do you resist the abundance of pleasure boats in the summer? Are prime fishing spot’s always taken before you arrive? Is it just to hot to fish during the day? I have a solution for you, fish at night. Here on my home waters of Table Rock Lake, I fish year-round, day, evening and night, says Chis Gibbons from the Table Rock Lake Fishing Report. By far, my favorite time to fish Table Rock Lake is at night. Everyone else has already spent the day or evening fishing and are home nicely tucked in bed. That’s when I get up at 3:00 AM, hook up the boat and take off to the ramp. Night fishing can be challenging. It can also be a bass catching feast. Some of the biggest bass I have caught is at night. Bass, especially those big girls feed at night, regularly. I have found that the small mouth bass feed more then Spotted and Large Mouth. The small mouth are very aggressive during the night, and will strike fast and slow moving baits.

Baits how to and location

I have 3 got to baits for night fishing: 1. Black spinner bait with a large Colorado blade. 2. Black or purple worm on a 1/2-ounce weight. 3. Jig My favorite bait of all is that Black Spinnerbait. Having a large Colorado blade moves a great deal of water around the bait and the bass can not only feel the water movement, they can see it. Bass use feeling more often then any other wild animal. Anglers have all types of ways to fish a spinnerbait at night, but my favorite is reeling slow enough that you feel a slow thump. I call it the thump, thump, thump feeling. My worm I fish on a ½ ounce weight, cast, and reel back with the worm never loosing contact with the bottom moving it very slowly. My jig is moved slowly. I do hop it from time to time but I’ve learned at night that moving the jig a few inches at a time can sometimes catch larger fish. I had a friend of mine, Mark Politte

tell me that jig fishing at night he add rattles and, hops it aggressively to catch bigger bass. He also says during a full moon, he uses a white spinner bait with silver blades. He says the will clobber it. The bait can be fished two separate ways. 1. Parallel the bank 2. The traditional way is to set away from the bank and cast in. My favorite way is to parallel the bank. Parallel the bank: I set my boat as close to the bank as I can get it, sometimes I can reach out and touch the bank with my hand. I make forward cast parallel as close to the bank and I can get. Next, I cast away from the bank about 1 foot. I will follow that up with another cast 5 foot from the bank. This technique will target those feeding fish while allowing you to keep the bait in a hot strike zone longer. Parallel fishing will keep you from tangling up in buck brush, rocks and trees as bad. The traditional set away from the bank and cast in: This method has proven to work for millions of anglers for years. It’s a very effective way to catch fish. I set my boat in about 25 foot of water and cast inward. At times I will allow my spinnerbait to drop in order to reach some deeper fish since your siting in deeper water. You will find fishing this way sometimes the smaller fish bite more often. Smaller fish tend to rise in the water column from their holding location. They do this for many reasons but often it’s a method they use to stay clear of the larger fishing on the hunt for a quick meal. The smaller fish are targeting a meal from the balls of shad that are found out away from the bank. The smaller fish will seek out a quick meal rising vertical fast and moving back

down as soon as they eat something. The larger fish target the bank as baitfish and crawfish will be in shallow water. A large bass often a female bass, will target those baitfish shallow and can pen them down to eat. If you were to take a bright light and shine on the bank at night here on Table Rock Lake, you will find shad scattered on the bank along with a mixture of other smaller fish species. They don’t tend to ball up on the bank. They are also seeking a meal.

Fishing Target

I target 1 specific structure type for night fishing. I target 45 degree chunk rock banks. I do this primarily due to the availability of crawfish that lives in chunk rock. The bank slope of 45 degree adds the benefit of allow the fish to rise in the water column vertically, quickly for a fast meal. Chunk rock is well known to hold crawfish that has a great deal of protein for the bass diet. Bass tend at night to seek out the large meals in order to hold them over till the next feeding time. If a bass eats 2-3 crawdad that a full meal for them. Seeking out chunk rock is vital for overall success. Chunk rock comes in all different sizes and shapes. I identify chunk rock as boulders mixed in sizes from football size all the way up to size of automobiles. Chunk rock of these sizes all bass to seek cover and additionally gives them a prime location to eat.

Shell Knopoly cruising to local shelves 1,000 copies of board game going fast; funds support Friends of Shell Knob BY KYLE TROUTMAN editor@cassville-democrat.com

A new board game is has hit the shelves in the Shell Knob area, with proceeds to benefit Friends of Shell Knob, specifically to be used for improvements to Chamber Park. Shell Knopoly, which has been more than a year in the making, arrived on May 2, with 1,000 total copies made. Tom Koob, member of the Board of Directors of Friends of Shell Knob, said the $30 retail value game has already been flying off the shelves. “We’ve sold about 200 already, mainly because we had a lot of preorders,” he said. “We have no intent to reprint more, as this is a one-time project.” The game was suggested by Shell Knob Chamber of Commerce Director Twilia Harrison a couple years ago, and last year, the Friends of Shell Knob formed a committee, headed by Koob, to develop, manufacture and sell the product. “It took a long time to develop the game,” Koob said. “There was a tremendous amount of design work, ad sales to pay for manufacturing, and then the manufacturing itself took three months. A semi truck showed up on May 2 and we unloaded 1,000 games. Several local retailers have already agreed to carry it, and it is available for purchase at the Chamber.” Koob said the game features an immense amount of localized customization, work done by graphic designer Luis Cuestas. “Luis volunteered his time to this project and put in many hours developing it,” Koob said. “It’s unique to Shell Knob and has a kind of retro look. There are older, postcard-looking photos on the box, and historical pictures of Shell Knob on the board and a lake background on the board. On the bottom of the box, there is a graphic display of the game and pieces, and some history about Shell Knob.” Koob said everything about the game is customized, down to the playing tokens.

“The game has six detailed pewter tokens — a boat, a bass, the bridge, a long cabin, a pine tree and a turtle,” he said. “You start the game at the ‘Start Vacation Square’ and the corner squares are: ‘Just Getting a Room at the Lake,’ ‘Lottery Jackpot,’ and ‘Rainy Day, Go Shopping.’ The buildings to put on properties are cabins and resorts, and the playing card spaces are titled “Go Fishing” and “Go Boating,” with lake-themed prompts on the cards. The board includes four campgrounds and two utility spaces, plus numerous properties like Highway 86, Highway 39, Highway YY, Canoeing Cove, Tubing Bay, Dogwood Drive and more. The most expensive spaces are King’s River and White River. Koob said the goal for Shell Knopoly is to raise $10,000 to put toward improvements at Chamber Park, a 5-acre property on Needles Eye Road donated to the Chamber by the Shell Knob School. “The Chamber acquired that property from the school with a goal of bettering the community,” Koob said. “The property is in good shape, but some facilities are deteriorating. We formed the Friends of Shell Knob to support the community and make improvements at Chamber Park.” Jennifer Mitchell, president of the Friends of Shell Knob, said the list of work to be done includes clearing trees and brush along the fence line, installing a new sign on Highway 39, removing dilapidated buildings on the property like the baseball dugout, installing new LED lighting, erecting a storage building, building a pavilion for meetings and events, adding a walking trail and general beautification. “We want the park to be a place people can go and use any time, not just for big events,” Mitchell said. “We want it to be a place that can attract tourists and host other events like family reunions. We’ve considered expanding it, too. There are a couple pieces of land adjacent to the park that we hope to acquire. People park there for Shakin’ in the Shell now, and if the owner did not allow that, parking would be very limited.” Anyone looking to help the Friends of Shell Knob may reach Mitchell at 417-858-3136.
