Expertise with Assurance

Knighthood are an established provider of Marine, General and Financial insurance to commercial organisations. The board decided it was time to refresh their corporate identity and after extensive negotiations and a competitive pitch, Nexus were chosen to develop a new look and feel for the company. The brief was to modernise the Knighthood logo, losing the ‘Knight and Shield” but still keeping a brand that would be recognised. This was quite a feat as the name just cries out for Knights and Shields! Our solution was to concentrate on the ‘K’ of Knighthood, produce an abstract form of this whilst retaining the orange colour of their old logo. After much research they agreed on a strong supporting colour pallete which really helps them stand out in their marketplace. The K defines strength and longevity and our suggestion was to emboss and add spot UV varnish to further reflect the quality of service Knighthood offer their clients. We are currently in the process of applying the new brand to all areas and aspects of the business.

Knighthood getting ready for 2012

The big thing on the horizon for 2012 is clearly the London Olympics which many expect will have a profound effect on business in the UK.

Another event, just as important, is due to occur in 2012, with the introduction of the new Qualifying Workplace Pension Scheme rules. This will have an equally profound impact for all employers and employees. Following research that estimates that currently 7 million people are not saving sufficiently for their retirement, the government will be putting the onus on employers to help encourage more people to invest for their retirement. The Pensions Act 2008 sets out the framework for government proposals to increase the level of retirement savings through the workplace. It introduces a requirement for employers to “auto-enrol” their “qualifying employees” into a “qualifying scheme”, into which they must make “qualifying contributions”. What are the dangers?

knight times The knight has stayed with us and served us well ever since but our board felt that it was time for the brand to be refreshed. After extensive discussions and production of images we settled on the new logo you see before you today. We wanted an image that represented a modern way of thinking but still held on to the traditional values that are so important to the company, its staff and clients. Our website is currently being redesigned too, but in the meantime it’s time to bid goodnight to Knighty and good day to the future.

reopened by Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. As a past trustee of the Cutty Sark Trust, Chris Livett was a member of the team that directed and planned the renovation of the iconic clipper ship.

In the words of Chris Livett: “We have created a template, set a bench mark and shown the world what can be achieved on our River Thames”.

In June, “Steven B” again featured, this time leading the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Pageant, towing the specially commissioned bells which were housed in a custom-designed casing within Livett’s barge “Ursula Katherine”. The heralding barge then chimed its way down the Thames with the spectacular flotilla following close behind. Chris Livett himself was hugely privileged to be invited to join the Royal family on board “Spirit of Chartwell” during the Pageant.

The first major project of 2012 came in February with Livett’s tug “Steven B” towing a giant floating whale down the river past famous London landmarks to help wildlife charity WWF raise awareness for their campaign “The Last 130”. Also in February an enormous set of Olympic Rings made their first appearance on the river, carried by Livett’s flat top pontoon, “Dart”, and towed by “Steven B”, marking 150 days until the opening of the London Olympics. This was the start of many pop-up appearances of the rings leading up to the Games.

Moving forward “After 45 years of using our trusty logo, Knighthood has taken the brave step to move with the times and modernise our image. We are delighted with the outcome and hope that you like our fresh new look.” Colin Westcott MD

Knighthood has been closely involved with Livett’s Launches and their associated company, Thames Luxury Charters, for over 25 years - but we were particularly proud of this relationship in 2012. This was a very important year for the River Thames and for Livett’s Launches, whose expertise was called upon for many spectacular projects which helped to define this Olympic year. Knighthood was delighted to work with Livett’s winning team in all these projects, ensuring that their insurance cover kept up with the dynamic diversity of each event.

Tightening Your Belt

During a recent review with a long standing client of Knighthood such a conversation took place. At the meeting it became apparent that when our client had recently been in discussion with their Accountant they had been informed that the difficult trading conditions had led to their business being down valued. Although this is not exactly music to any business owners’ ears, it did present an opportunity for us to review their Shareholder Protection Scheme. Subsequently significantly less life insurance cover is now required under the terms of their Shareholder Agreement and we have been able to recommend reduced insurance cover leaving our client with much lower premiums.

Another set of Olympic Rings was unveiled in June, this time suspended from Tower Bridge and marking one month to the start of the Games. Livett’s Launches were instrumental in the delivery by water and installation of these rings, and M.V. “Edwardian” was hired by LOCOG to put Lord Sebastian Coe and Mayor Boris Johnson in prime position for the big reveal.

As the global economic conditions continue to hinder growth for small businesses, our Financial Services Division regularly receives enquiries from clients on ways to reduce business expenses.

Livett’s Launches also played a significant role in a large refurbishment of the EDF Energy London Eye. They helped to transfer all 32 pods using the “Steven B” to tow a pontoon from the Eye to West India Dock and King George V Dock for onwards transport for refurbishment.

Livett’s was delighted to partner with Adidas and Taylor Made Golf to create a floating golf hole and golf tee on the Thames. World class golfers Sergio Garcia and Dustin Johnson came down to Butler’s Wharf Pier in July to play the hole and helped raise £10,000 for charity.

Newsletter Spring 2013

Welcome to this very special edition of Knight Times, in which we reveal Knighthood’s brand new logo. You will no doubt all be familiar with ‘Knighty’, the previous logo, used by Knighthood since the very beginning in 1969. Our founding director, Trevor Griffiths, wanted a name for the business that would exude strength, tradition and loyalty. Assisted by a pair of cufflinks he happened to be wearing at the time, featuring a Knight in his suit of armour, he came up with Knighthood as a name that captured the ethos he wished to instil in the company.

Most definitely nice people to do business with”. MD - Mailing and Fulfilment House. “It is because of the speedy, efficient, friendly, personal service you provided (and the 25% saving!) that I would highly recommend Knighthood”. Owner - Commercial and Industrial Cleaning Company. “May we take this opportunity to thank Knighthood for the marvellous service provided during our water disaster claim. Brand Development / Logo Design / Brand Development / Web Design and Development / Print / Advertising United Shoe were a start-up company needing a corporate brand identity to help push the company forward. After visiting a number of agencies in the area they described their visit to Nexus as ‘the friendliest, most helpful and understanding of their requirements’. We listened, digested and developed some concepts that would represent the company’s ideas and values. We worked closely alongside the client to bring a strong and fresh design onto paper. The result was a bold and striking logo which depicts all that the brand stands for and achieves. As United Shoe are involved in recycling shoes, they were very keen to ensure that wherever possible, recycled or eco-friendly products were used in line with their philosophy. Following on from the corporate branding, we designed recycling boxes, company folders, stationery, exhibition graphics, large format stickers and a full brochure website. www.unitedshoe.co.uk

GLORIOUS MAGNOLIAS BORDE HILL, BORDE HILL LANE, HAYWARDS HEATH

BRIGHTON FESTIVAL VARIOUS LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT BRIGHTON & HOVE

When I was a toddler I remember being on a walk with my granddad when I came literally face to face with a bloom on a bush that smelt heavenly. The flower was a magnolia and I’ve been passionate about them and rhododendrons ever since. Borde Hill Garden’s marvellous magnolias are set to make a dramatic appearance in early spring. Take the chance to stroll through the award winning garden and give yourself a light lunch treat at Café Elvira. Then go back and do it again … I said I was besotted!

Europe’s leading arts festival for artists and audiences is known for an ambitious programme that aims to make the most of Brighton’s distinctive cultural atmosphere. The festival includes visual art, theatre, music, books and debates, family friendly and outdoor performances. Each year, Brighton Festival attracts an inspiring and internationally significant Guest Director. This year it is celebrated poet, writer, broadcaster and previous Children’s Laureate Michael Rosen. 2013’s programme highlights include the premieres of The Great Enormo, a time travelling show written and narrated by Michael Rosen and featuring London Sinfonietta; Britten: The Canticles, a celebration of Benjamin Britten’s centenary featuring singer Ian Bostridge; and My Life After, a new work from Argentina’s most successful playwright Lola Arias.

Throughout his career, Verdi longed to find a good subject for a comic opera. Towards the very end of it he found that subject, in the vast and jovial shape of Shakespeare’s John Falstaff. The result is indeed a triumph, and joyously life-affirming. This revival of the production by Richard Jones, first seen at Glyndebourne in 2009, places the action firmly in Windsor with recognisably English characters. ‘It’s a clever conceit,’ said The Observer, ‘brilliantly executed by the designer Ultz, whose sharp eye for detail, authentic and witty, is part of the charm.’

CASS SCULPTURE FOUNDATION GOODWOOD, CHICHESTER

www.sculpture.org.uk

The Cass Sculpture Foundation re-opens its doors to the public on the 29th March with its newest addition ‘X’, a work by young Latvian American artist Viktor Timofeev. This imposing sculpture is a meshing of geometric shapes, the square, the cube and the cross. Described as a “metal sanctuary” by the artist, Timofeev’s work marks the Foundation’s continuing intentions to commission new and exciting monumental sculpture from both emerging and established artists. The Foundation’s 26 acre grounds are home to an ever-changing display of 80 monumental sculptures, all of which are available for sale with the proceeds going directly to artists.

Best known as Saturday Kitchen’s infectiously enthusiastic wine expert, Olly Smith is on a mission to take the stuffiness out of vino. Now training for the London marathon with Michel Roux Jr, Olly once wrote for children’s classics like Pingu and Wallis & Gromit. In uniquely entertaining style he shared his passion for wine, and much more at Pelman House, Lewes.

www.brightoncentre.co.uk Il Divo and Katherine Jenkins, the world’s foremost classical crossover quartet and mezzo soprano, will unite for the very first time to perform together as part of their co-headline UK and European tour. The revolution of classical-crossover music has grown apace over recent years and with it both artists have hit the heights of popularity with millions of fans across the globe. Since their recording debuts Jenkins and Il Divo have amassed 30 million album sales between them. Although they’ve crossed paths over the years they’ve never appeared on stage together.

Back in the day Mick Hucknall was known for his seemingly endless stream of hits with Simply Red as well as his partying and his way with the ladies. Well the chart hits may not be quite so prevalent but the voice is still great and the only ladies in his life nowadays are his wife Gabriella and their daughter Romy. For the first time since the Simply Red farewell concerts in 2010 he’s out on tour. Monday 15th April finds him at the Brighton Dome showcasing his forthcoming new solo album ‘American Soul’, featuring his own take on classic songs which have inspired him throughout his life. I recommend that you grab tickets whilst you can as Mr Hucknall’s many fans will get there before you.

You are great fun to watch on Saturday Kitchen and somehow make wandering round a supermarket buying wine really fun and entertaining to watch. How did you get into wine?

Lifeafter law

Don’t get me wrong, legal work can be exciting. No, really. Television has long been fond of a courtroom drama; from the days of Rumpole and Crown Court to Kavanagh QC and Suits. Yet most fictional depictions concentrate on American law firms and English barristers chambers. We solicitors only get a look in when there’s a police interview. In reality that’s one of the least attractive parts of the job, particularly when dealing with intoxicated clients at three in the morning.

A great many not-so-local politicians were once lawyers, including Jack Straw, Tony Blair, and further afield, the current US President.

If it’s not always cliff-edge exciting, working as a solicitor can be rewarding. Seeing your legal arguments prevail makes the drudgery of sifting through seemingly endless documents for facts worthwhile. More than that, winning compensation for a client that enables them to retain a quality of life that may otherwise have been impossible, perhaps because of a disabling injury, can feel like scoring the winning goal at Wembley.

Mary Robinson, former President of the Republic of Ireland and her successor Mary McAleese are both former barristers. The former went on to become UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Yet, if the joy of legal practice does wear off, what do lawyers do?

Politics Drawn by the promise of a good argument and the chance to let their red pen loose on legislation, some of our most well-known local politicians started out as lawyers. Airey Neave, MP for Eastbourne until he was killed by a car bomb in 1979, was a qualified barrister. Nigel Waterson, MP for Eastbourne between 1992 and 2010 started out as a barrister and then a solicitor specialising in shipping law. Michael Foster, MP for Hastings and Rye between 1997 and 2010 is a solicitor working in employment law.

Then, weirdly, questions started popping into my mind like; “Why does it taste the way it does? Would it taste different if somebody else made it? If it came from down the road? If it was different grape varieties? What food does it go with?” And I genuinely felt this surge of curiosity and I wanted to know more. I get that same feeling every time I taste wine.

On Saturday 15th June the event is open to fans to watch the tennis for free. This will be a great opportunity to bring all the family to watch some world-class tennis simply collect free tickets from the onsite box office on the day.

Not all lawyers want to be lawyers their entire working life. Even those that remain in the law sometimes venture into other, dare I say, more exciting opportunities.

Oh, that’s very nice of you to say. I got into wine quite late actually. I was 20 years old and walked past an Oddbins that had a sign outside saying “free wine tasting here today.” I was a student at the time and popped in. I sipped a £3 bottle of white wine and thought, “It’s incredible.” It didn’t cost much more than a pint and I thought it was zesty, invigorating and had exciting flavours.

15-22 June

In endorsing Mitt Romney’s 2012 run for the Presidency at the Republican Convention Clint Eastwood said “We don’t need lawyers in the White House”. Something of a problem given Romney is also a law graduate of Harvard Law School. In fact 22 of the 44 Presidents in America’s history were once lawyers.

In terms of political campaigning Shami Chakrabarti CBE worked as a human rights barrister before becoming director of human rights campaigning group Liberty and Chancellor of Oxford Brookes University.

Music The significantly shorter list of lawyers who went into music includes tenor Andrea Bocelli and Francis Scott Key who composed the US national anthem. I contemplated the move when singing with a band a couple of years ago, but the usual problems arose; not enough time to rehearse, musical differences, lack of talent, audience hostility, and the band literally disbanding. All of which left me still looking for my Subo moment. The legal world lost out when these gifted musicians dropped out of law school: Tchaikovsky Handel Sibelius

Ex-Radio One DJ Judge Jules is currently training to be a lawyer. Raul Julia, who played the Defence attorney in Presumed Innocent and Gomez Addams in The Addams Family films started as a lawyer. Hollywood star Gerard Butler had his legal career cut short after getting sacked when drunk as a trainee solicitor. John Whaite, the 2012 winner of Great British Bake Off has a law degree and won a placement at a national law firm before entering the competition. He now plans to study patisserie at the Cordon Bleu and Max Clifford claims the young baker could earn £500k from book and TV deals alone.

Of the most recent authors, Turow and Grisham feature legally-based plots in almost all of their novels and Mortimer created the unforgettable character of Rumpole.

It’s intense stuff and that’s what we should get out there and express to people is that it’s fun. I find wine really exuberant. There is, of course, a kind of studious side to it, learning about the vintages and particular disciplines of regions and why they make the

I often get asked the question, “I’ve got this great bottle of wine, I’m really excited about it, when should I open it?” And I always tell people to just make the wine the occasion? Do it tonight or the next time you have a bad day, when it’s raining, make the wine the occasion because if you save it for a birthday or for a very special event and it doesn’t quite live up to your expectations, it can be really disappointing. Go home, buy a bit of cheese on the way and drink that

Yes. I was always a bit larger than life and I was always quite into comedy. My brother is a comedy writer; he was formerly a stand up as well and my parents were always very jolly so there’s always been a funny bone in our family. Growing up I loved performing, I loved drama and theatre and all that sort of thing. My father was a music teacher so I’ve played a lot of music growing up; I played the French horn, the piano and I sang. I was a chorister at Kings College Cambridge so performing and being out there was always something I’d enjoyed. I hit 16/17 and started doing more acting at school and then a little bit of stand up in bars when I was a student. I did okay at stand up. I played at Glastonbury in the Glastonbury Comedy Tent one year and made it as a semi-finalist for the

BBC’s Open Mike. I wasn’t the world’s greatest stand up but I enjoyed the buzz of a live audience and I really enjoyed the culture that went with it because there were lashings of booze readily available. But then wine came along. I’d watch people like Oz Clarke on television and thought he was splendid as he made wine very informal, it’s exactly what I wanted to do. He’s now a great pal and I do events with him called Three Wine Men up and down the country. He’s a huge mine of information so now to be working with him and to go drinking with him, it’s phenomenal. He’s a lovely man. So, yes, for me it was all about bringing that side of entertainment through to wine because the danger is that people feel intimidated by wine. There’s nothing worse than a wine bore who makes people feel ill at ease when they say, “of course, this particular vintage isn’t as good as the 1982.” And everyone kind of goes, “Really? It tastes alright to me”

These writing abilities can be used in other ways, to varying effect. Those who manage to get published follow in some great footsteps of lawyers turned writers:

So I know the wine but I very rarely know exactly what I’m going to say because I like to be completely on edge and in the moment. I think, especially on television, that you can’t really perform that kind of thing. It’s like watching a great chef, he’s got to deliver this dish and be natural as he does it and that’s what it’s like when I’m tasting the wine.

Many in the entertainment business once ventured down a legal path.

Lawyers like writing. A fact confirmed by anyone who has received one of those long incomprehensible letters that lawyers are famed for (however if you ever receive a letter from Mayo Wynne Baxter in anything other than plain English, please let me know, as that shouldn’t happen).

I do, they give me the recipe and I make it. Sadly, I don’t get to go to the restaurants and taste it with the chefs; that would be a lovely perk.

wine in the way that they do, and that’s interesting if you want to become a nerd like me. But I think if you’re enjoying a glass of wine on a Thursday, it’s all about enjoyment and pairing it up with your shepherd’s pie, your pork chop, your mushroom risotto, whatever it might be, and just having that extra bit of enjoyment for free. When you pair the right wine with the dish, it unlocks an extra dimension of thrills. I think the greatest thing is to go home, crack a bottle with a meal share it with people you love.

idea where that came from.” Perhaps I should have them all on my app, lots of the little comments that I’ve said over the years. I’m just really pleased that people find it colourful and enjoyable because if I can inspire anybody to go and taste something a little bit different then that’s my job done. It’s all about just enjoying wine and realising that you don’t have to spend a fortune to enjoy fantastic wine. There is something for everybody and the flavours are super exciting and they’re so diverse.

Sport The law is full of young bright people devoted to their work and inspired by a sense of justice. However, the overall demographic is ageing. The average age of a partner in a regional law firm is now 56. The figure is distorted to some extent by practitioners that simply cannot afford to retire, because they cannot pay the expensive insurance premiums that fall due if the practice closes because they cannot find a successor. As a consequence, it is perhaps not surprising that lawyers very rarely move on to sporting prowess. However some sporting heroes have gone on to become lawyers. After hanging up his boots in 2002 Blackburn and England footballer Stuart

Ripley became a solicitor specialising in sports law. While Brian Moore, former England Rugby star, succumbed to the charms of legal practice between the late 1990s and 2003, after which he became a sports commentator for the BBC.

thinking about what’s going on in the world in that particular year and how we can make our mark within it.”

Brighton Festival truly boasts something for everyone. Theatre aficionados sit side-by-side with those simply keen to try something new, whilst wide-eyed children and their parents stand rapt alongside cultural connoisseurs at many of the free outdoor events. It’s no surprise that this innovative programme of events has become both England’s most established mixed arts festival and a major milestone in the international cultural calendar.

“He has the infectious energy of a polymath and is curious about and interested in everything - I think he encapsulates everything that we would want the spirit of Brighton Festival to be.”

Running from Saturday 4th to Sunday 26th May the 47th Brighton Festival will present work from all artistic forms including theatre, music, dance, visual art, circus, literary and family performance.

All in all, there is much to commend legal training, even if you don’t want to be a lawyer for life. It teaches you to respect facts, make a good case, pay attention to detail and think fast when you need a new line of argument.

“Brighton Festival is such an eclectic arts festival. It has such a wide range as we are here to celebrate everything in the arts,” says Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival Chief Executive, Andrew Comben.

Some would no doubt argue there are already too many lawyers. Others will think a fair legal system is a hallmark of a civilised society and that to serve everyone equally we need expert advisors that can interpret the law.

Brighton Festival is also noted for having a Guest Director. The last four years have seen sculptor Anish Kapoor, musician and composer Brian Eno, activist Aung San Suu Kyi and actress Vanessa Redgrave take on the role.

Either way, I find myself hoping smart, passionate individuals continue to choose law, for at least a part of their working lives. For me, it’s the most interesting, exciting and satisfying way to make a living. Until I get that call from Simon Cowell.

“A Guest Director brings focus to the programme and allows us to be really coherent about the way we programme work,” explains Comben. “Selecting the right person can be a really long process, as we’re also trying to match the spirit of the times by

In 2013 the Guest Director will be the celebrated children’s author, poet, broadcaster and former Children’s Laureate, Michael Rosen. “He’s a fantastic artist in his own right, a wonderful raconteur, thinker and speaker who has delighted audiences of all ages for decades,” explains Comben.

As well as providing a foundation for the programming themes of Brighton Festival, the Guest Director is also involved in various events throughout the festival. This year, a guaranteed programme highlight is The Great Enormo on Saturday 4th May. Specially commissioned by Brighton Festival, this orchestral work whisks audiences back in time through thousands of years in search of the ideal theme tune for Mr Enormo Biggins’ Great Fun Park. Written and narrated by Rosen and composed by James Morgan and Juliette Pochin, the show features the City of London Sinfonia on the Brighton Dome Concert Hall stage. Among the many themes Brighton Festival will explore this year is Michael Rosen’s passion for words and storytelling. The annual Children’s Parade celebrates this by taking the alphabet as its 2013 theme. Having opened Brighton Festival for the past 25 years, the parade has become a muchloved community event. Watched by over 10,000 people and featuring over 80 local schools, the procession will pass through the city centre on Saturday 4th May. Michael Rosen’s favourite book, Emil and the Detectives by Erich Kästner, will also provide the foundation for the inaugural Young City Reads. A city-wide

treat for young people from the brains at Collected Works – the organisation behind the annual reading festival City Reads – children across Brighton & Hove will read and explore the novel together. “Emil and the Detectives flowers with inventiveness, excitement, humour, originality and tension,” explains Rosen, who will host a special Young City Reads event at the end of the festival. “I think it’s wonderful that a whole city is going to read the book at the same time. I think this will build up a great sense of everyone exploring the book together.” Classical music fans will be delighted to hear that Benjamin Britten’s centenary year will be celebrated in style with the world premiere of Britten: The Canticles, presented by Aldeburgh Music. Britten’s five Canticles span most of his composing life, distilling his immense opera writing ability into miniature musical jewels, individual concert pieces linked by a compressed musical drama and intense theatrical potential. Here they are brought to life by an amazing

cast and artists from the worlds of theatre, art and choreography including singer Ian Bostridge, theatre director Neil Bartlett, lighting designer Paule Constable and many other artists from the worlds of physical theatre, dance and visual arts. Brighton Festival will also play host to the UK premiere of My Life After. Presented by one of Argentina’s most successful playwrights and performers Lola Arias, the play tells the true stories of six actors whose real parents lived

unscathed through the dictatorship in Argentina in the 1980s - a period when thousands of people disappeared and are presumed to have been killed. My Life After deals with a generation’s need to process a collective trauma which is examined and ultimately resolved creatively and playfully through stories, dreams, family photos and live music.
