The Browning School - New York, NY

PROJECT NARRATIVE The Browning School is 56,500 sf K-12 college preparatory school for boys, located on East 62nd Street in New York City. It occupies three adjacent buildings on 12 levels: the original school building from 1922 on the east side, a carriage house in the center, and the lower five floors of an apartment building on the west side. Over the years enrollment in the school increased significantly. Because of this incremental growth, the school occupied multiple levels, and the spaces within it were dark, cramped, and difficult to navigate.

A comprehensive Master Plan was prepared to address code and ADA issues, and completely reorganize the public circulation space for the school. The central core of the building was completely transformed. The original stairs were kept on the east side of the building, and a new light-filled stair was constructed on the west side; in the center, a new south-facing atrium stair brings natural light deep inside the building. A new multi-stop elevator was installed to access the different levels and provide ADA access. At the basement level and on the first floor, a new public zone was created with an expanded lobby, a gymnasium, a dining room, and a library. The upper levels include four new science laboratories, two new art studios, and additional classrooms. Transparency between these spaces heightens the sense of spaciousness and activity.

Project Goals for the Browning School included: • Provide clear circulation throughout the school by using a new central stair and elevator; • Consolidate and re-organize large public spaces (gym, library, cafeteria) by moving them closer to the new enlarged main lobby. • Incorporate natural light through the use of skylights and doors with large glass panels • Provide uniform and consistent finishes throughout the building
