Temporary Installation for Dutch Railway Station

Introduction The station is the heart of the city, bringing people in and out in a continuous stream. Our approach for NS is mainly to link the station to the city of Eindhoven in a more personal level, gathering data from locals and asking them what makes this city special for them. Their perspective can guide visitors coming from the station.

We use the station as our central mapping spot, and have linked routes that have been repeatedly mentioned by the locals of Eindhoven. We listened to their comments and implemented them in the mapping process.

In order to collect the appropriate data, our questions consisted of which spot in Eindhoven locals found the most ‘gezellig,’ and which spots are considered dangerous. Every local had a different reaction about these question, dividing the dataset into several color-coded categories. Some enjoy their working environment, others prefer to be at home after work, others enjoy the social night life in Eindhoven and pinpointed the top spots.

The template of the map changes according to category. The dots are linked, following the main routes. Usually people enter a particular spot in a city from the station. As a result, the station is marked as the central point and guide for visitors to get an idea of distance to all these destinations. Each dataset would be placed on glass panels, located by each platform.

Two layers are applied to each panel. Applying the original map of Eindhoven as another layer helps the people recognize the location of the mentioned location in the city.
