Styling Tips & Notes: Style Personality: Casual Fem Chic Your Style Personality should be the “driver” behind what you wear every day, how you create your looks, where you shop and what you buy, what you choose not to purchase, and how you think your look presents to the ”public” (i.e., friends, family, co-workers, significant other, etc.). Typically, individuals are either Style Schizophrenics or Style Atheists, and I would categorize you more as an atheist – no clear or intentional style messaging but headed “somewhere”. You need focus - a clear Style Personality that defines how you should look and what your look should say. Since we cleared away most of your non-value added pieces, you now have a second round of minor purging to do focused on ensuring that your remaining pieces are aligned with your new Style Personality, Casual Fem Chic. Right now, you have a number of pieces that are underutilized so your more immediate mission will be to acquire key pieces that “bridge” your current closet with your true/desired Style Personality. Your preferred styling is a dichotomy of minimalist and feminine, and appears to represent a slight miss on the desire to be feminine. In your scenarios, you had clothes that worked but nothing that ‘knocked it out of the park’ thus, your challenge: to focus on those few elevated essentials that are missing but fill-in the gaps. Your desired direction is to go slightly more clean and sleek but in an unconventionally relaxed manner. Your new lifestyle can more easily embrace the casual look you want but you’ll need to balance that with the somewhat ridge nature of southern living… To better encapsulate your desired personal brand, your new Style Personality focuses on balancing where you are moving professionally and geographically. “Casual” is the essence of your current style and lifestyle which is a mixed blessing! You have to make sure you’re careful not to go too relaxed or miss the key pieces that can amp it up. The “Chic” aspect refers to a blend of your clean and minimalist thinking when it comes to building your wardrobe. The “Fem” word is aspirational and 100% reflects the direction you want to head in and it should work to balance your clean, minimalist feel. Going forward – the focus is on chic feminine additions that can be dressed down or amped up for your new life! LOVE what you have and don’t settle! One of something fabulous is better than three of “nothing special” any day of the week!

Ongoing Style Challenges (2): to acquire missing foundational basics to get better use of current clothing and secondly to complete your looks with the extras and finishing touches.… 2. Bra fitting: my recommendation would be to head to Sylene (4407 S. Park Ave Chevy Chase, MD) – they are the best, it’s free, and you’ll leave with great insight into bras to look for what how fab you can look with the right undergarments. We’ll schedule yours for end of March… 3. General fit/style considerations include…  Empire waist creates the illusion of longer legs and smaller waist  Prints are essential to any versatile wardrobe  Aim to show shape or skin in your looks (= femininity) 4. Clean & Sleek  Steer clear of frilly and focus on items with a clean/simple finish  Fit is key here: you want form fitting but not tight! Consider the material too!  Look for items that don’t add “weight” or bulk; and that draw the eye down the middle 5. Add a tailor to your speed dial because at least 50% of your closet should see the hands of a tailor! 6. Shoes: you’re missing some basics including pointy toe flats and things that elongate your frame! 7.Jewelry: focus on acquiring some mixed metal pieces that can go from work to date night, and weekday to weekend… 8.Colors: we need to agree to one or two accent colors so we can build your prints around those; and one will likely be a medium blue and another cool color 9.You are banned from:  Drop waist dresses or jumpsuit  “Filler” items that work but aren’t what you really want

Sample Looks: these looks are meant to be inspirational and provide direction in terms of looks you should be aiming to achieve and messaging you want LOOK #1

The focus of this look is really about the gold accessories that bring the look together and make the outfit sing! White always reads as “crisp and the casual nature of the plaid button down is a healthy juxtaposition of chic and casual. This look is perfect for fun date night but also for after-work drinks; and can even go to a casual work event with a blazer!

LOOK #2

This look is 100% effortless but still feminine and chic without being overdone. Dresses are one-piece outfits and the ease of the metallic accessories make it upscale and amped up. The shoes are flats which keeps it slightly more casual and mom-friendly.

Everyone wants to look put together even on the most casual days, and without any effort. For spring, starting with the basic accessories in cognac/luggage color, you can use easy essentials to dress effortlessly chic. The accessory palette can also be switched out for black or navy blue as you move into cooler weather.

LOOK #4

This outfit is perfection for a casual day of work or even for a night on the town. It’s simple and very feminine but not overly “thought out”. The blazer works as a means to amp it up and add polish if needed…. The last element is the mix of natural tones contrasted with the bright blue to ensure the focal point is the dress!

To add color thoughtfully is easiest when a print is involved – in this “ladies who lunch” outfit, the focal point are the multi-colored shoes that can work as the feature across a number of outfits for work or weekend. Keeping everything else simple and understated ensures, again, the focal point is the shoe.

All of these looks are meant to show you not only how to do the “new” you but how you can add elements to tone it down or make it pop. This is consistent style messaging and shows how focusing on the Style Personality can translate across scenarios.
