“La Sapienza” University of Rome | Myonji University of Republic of Korea I’m an italian architect, during my first years of profession I’ve learnt a lot regarding different fields of architecture and about work-life in a stimulating environment with experienced coworkers, from which I’ve been very fortunate to apprehend as much as I could. My 5 years long study program made it possible to approach architecture in all its variaties and shades. Right now I still feel the need to work on different fronts, not much as the present tendency that leads architects to specialize in one precise field of studies. I’d love to find myself working on different projects, from interior design to urbanism and everything that is in between. I experienced working abroad and I can’t stop thinking about that time as a very relevant oppurtunity. It has both been a professional and a personal enrichment for me and I’ve understood the importance of deeply knowing different contexts to better understand life’s goals.

The project concerns the requalification of a tram depot. Built in 1928 in Rome, its activity complitely stopped in 2003. Today the building finds itself compressed in a densly populated area, without any connection with it because of both its functional loss and its phisical isolation caused by the street level rise during the 20th century. The operation consists in the spaces adaptation in order to reuse them for new functions. This happens through subtraction: the adaptation of the surfaces allows to create more livable spaces people, but at the same time this action doesn’t falsify the original perception of the building. The volumes are substracted following the existing structure preservating its skeleton. In that way the indoor spaces and the new outdoor spaces derived from the subtraction are always identifiable as the same element. The functional program consists in the design of a big coworking space, a library and a series of laboratories. These elements can offer a range of activities enjoyable by all age groups.

GERMAN ARCHAEOLOGICAL INSTITUTE (DAI) Renovation Rome, Italy Team: Insula architettura e ingegneria The project consists in the complete renovation of the German Archaeological Institute’s headquarter. The building is mostly occupied by a large library, a number of offices, a conference hall and the upper floor can accomodate 6 students in private rooms. The strip-out will allow to rethink the interior design, preserving the existing façades and the original functions. In the course of the construction works, the damages on the existing building are to be restored, the seismic resistance of the structure has to be improved and the thermal performance needs to be modernalized according to the current legislation.

EX ARSENALE PONTIFICIO - FONDAZIONE LA QUADRIENNALE Renovation Rome, Italy Team: Insula architettura e ingegneria The project consists in the restauration of the former Arsenale Pontificio, built at the beginning of the 18th century. The area is composed by three different buildings: the Arsenal, the Roperies, and the Salt warehouse. In addiction there is a very large outdoor area now in a state abandonment, very close to the river. The renovation of the entire lot will be used as the new headquarter of “LaQuadriennale” foundation, in need of different places for different functions. The Arsenal will be used for both exhibition and congress use, allowing the fondation to show her art collections and temporary exhibits. The Roperies will accomodate the foundation’s administrative offices and a book archive. The Salt warehouse will be trasformed into a cafeteria open to the public.

WARD HOUSE Private house Design Team: Carl Fredrik Svenstedt The house straddles a hill facing the majestic Sibilline Mountains. Stretched along the ridge, the house is separated into several blocks by a series of intimate courtyards, leading to the pool framed by a covered pavillon. The interior spaces climb the different levels of the terrain, creating a sinuous path alng the slope, with changing, diagonal views of the landscape.

PLAYROOM International competition Team: 2a+p/a

The new playroom emerges from the garden. It is organized as an overlap of different elements: a permeable base, a volume with windows and an equipped roof. The building synthesizes on 3 levels the main children’s experiences: play, relate, discover. The groung floor is a sequence of rooms dedicated to educational and game activities. Every space is connected with the garden, every room can connect with the others. The first floor is organized for parents relation moments, staff and people. This space offers trainig and studying activities. The rooftop is a terrace from which everyone can look at the city and be part of its transformations. From here the context can be acknowledged and releted to the project itself. “La Biblioteca degli Alberi” park is structured on three elements: linear path, fields and circular forests. The aim of the project is to ensure the continuity between the playroom’s area of relevance and the entire context, making possible to the project to became a part of that environment. At the entrance of the garden, sited on the ax extention of the park, a big circle defines a filter area between the public space and the playroom private space: a playground outdoor area as a meeting place for kids and adults.

PORTO POOL PROMENADE International Competition Design Team: Stefania Marino, Sebastiano Palamara, Francesca Paoloni

The project involves the design of a public pool promenade as a urban leisure attractor for residents and tourists, in order to reconnect with the water element in a urban context. Inspiration comes from the modern portuguease architects, able to understand and create with the use of local and traditional materials, as light stone and geometrical azulejos for exemple, The buildings are conceived as an extention of piers: panoramic terraces on the street level and connections to the level of the water. The element characterizing the interior space is light: through the openings the sun rays enter creating a strong color contrast between lights and shadows. Gather Around: Hongdae Eoulmadang-ro Cultural Platform International competition: 3rd prize winner Design Team: Sefania Marino Hongdae is and has always been a dinamic area of Seoul: its capability to change and readapt itself to the current demands is its strenght and the starting point to resolve today's issues. A railroad until the '70s, an experimental culture square in the '80s and '90s, nowadays Hongdae is transforming into a commercial attractor for tourists, losing the contact with its traditions and the local community. The project aims to elevate all of Hongdae nuances to make the area attractive to both locals and foreigners, improving the beauty and efficiency of the traditional elements, adding a new wave of culture and making it enjoyable to experience. The Sector B of Hongdae has been chosen because it encase the main features of the others sectors anddefine the character of the entire area, making this project appliable to the whole context.

The current situation presents a chaotic and low quality image architecturally speaking, caused by the presence of illegal elements added to the original after extensions and renovations. The daily management of these structures is not regulated by any rule and the result is a general lack of care that obstruct a proper valorization the complex.

The aim is to obtain a coherent and functional image of Seogyo 365, through the remouval of the unaestethic elements and the renovation of the damaged parts of the buildings. The new structures become strictly bonded to the existing ones and their goal is to create a dialog between the commercial activities and the cultural implementation.

A new functional mix is born: the new structures and the existing ones, very different from each other in the apperance, are able to cohabit and to attact both tourist and locals. Commerce and culture normally live separatly, but in this case they embrace one another taking advantage by their proximity, becoming one big catalyst.
