PENINSULA GARBARY IN POZNAN

P. G. / Introduction

PENINSULA GARBARY located in Poznan author: Monika Wozniak

Master Thesis / vol.1

Master Thesis / vol.1, supervisor: arch. K. Borowski, PhD, Eng.

Spatial Archetype / The spatial layout is divided in four basic levels: water, boulevards, urban square and block of building development. The gradual transition from natural zone to newly formed urban plan is aimed to become a part of direction formed in the phase of drawing up of development strategy of the Warta River. The spatial archetype is designed to comply with the basic rules: to constitute the element of mobile linear city, to demonstrate flexibility and mobility of the form, to perform “stock” functions, in a consistent way to combine static urban character with natural area, to demonstrate adaptability, as well as development potentialities through the interaction with other river areas. Geometrical and simple layout of buildings in the square is divided into two. From one side, there is a dense block of objects standing in the line of Electrical Power and Heating Plant; on the other side are free lumps of smaller volume architectural elements, located on the western part of the plot. Buildings from the eastern side are designed to focus most of planned basic functions for the peninsula, constituting the geometrical sequence, which reflects the direction of space development. The western side is a combination of the square with complementary functions; it provides flexible space for use, adapted to outdoor events. A water stream is spatial binder breaking the geometry of urban layout – connecting ponds with the area of square. The green part of peninsula constitutes the park space, which main element is water body. This area is the most important functional binder between the peninsula and river area, which task is storage and use of mobile architectural elements. Urban planning outline / Development of the peninsula fully expresses and reflects the principles, which clarified during the development of design process. This is an area that can be

interpreted as a part of “river’s outline” along with internally growing urban structure. At this stage an important was attempt to translate the theoretical assumptions on the architectural and urban language. Outside part of the plot – River Boulevard – is designed to provide transition/link between the urban interior, created in the central part of the area, and surrounding it river. Urban mobility and flexibility are visible in the entire green area, which is densely covered with internal ponds. From one side, they have retention function, on the other are intended to store floating architectural elements. This area constitutes the Warta Storage; it is a focal point in the distribution process of water objects. The main urban area is a reflection of the urban square. It is designed to create a seamless extension of the park, in harmony with natural shapes of greenery surrounding it. Clear and neutral materials reflect the surroundings, blending both in existing building development and variable space of natural areas. Symbolic connection of the nature and urban space takes place by breaking the surface of the square by water flow. The river stream flows out of the areas of ponds, runs along the main area freely meandering in the central space, to finally reach the Warta River. Architectural heart of the peninsula is compact layout of buildings, becoming part of composition of the existing Electrical Power and Heating Plant objects. Simple and clear plan is in harmony with square areas, creating a smooth and free connection of the boulevards with buildings. Geometrical layout objects, standing in opposition to the natural area, from one side shows an interesting contrast between free plant forms and geometrical layout of lumps, on the other harmonious and balanced dialogue with nature and architecture.

P.G. / City / River context

PENINSULA GARBARY

Basic design assumptions resulting from the location on the river: 1. Garbary Peninsula as a “radiating” space, point activating other river areas. 2. Seeking connections between other relevant spaces/cities located on the river – exchange and cooperation. 3. Creating the new spatial quality thanks to development of the areas of river bank boulevards adapted to needs of the mobile urban planning. 4. North part of the Garbary Peninsula – Warta Storage of the development center of “mobile urban planning” of the river. Basic design assumptions resulting from general analyses and place context: 1. Integration of the basic functions of riverside areas and urban areas (building development, green belt, urban squares, river space). 2. Bringing people close to the river, integration in the space of stream of water square. 3. Seeking new opportunities/new archetype solutions of the space of municipal boulevards.

PENINSULA GARBARY

Urban Interior / One of urban planning assumptions, regarding the internal space of peninsula, is to create a plan through the contrast of nature with architecture. Smooth bionic shapes of greenery surrounding the geometrical area of the plot are aimed to create an impression of natural walls, surrounding the heart of complex of the former Electrical Power and Heating Plant, complemented by newly designed objects. The wall of trees surrounding urban area is a living organism, which along with the change of season gives a new character of the space. Greenery has the task to form the outline of internal plot enabling natural transition between the urban quarter and river.

P.G. / Buildings functions

PENINSULA GARBARY

Basic functions localized on the plot are focused around the Center of Electrical Power and Heating Plant – Museum of Electricity, which constitutes a central object, i.e. starting point for formed composition. Fuctions created as an support for main area: education district, restauran, cafe, art gallery, water pavilion, fort Roon (history exhibition), outdoor pavilions).

25

Ponds / The northern part of the plot, as flood danger zone, was enriched with the system of water bodies. From the functional side, they are elements becoming a part of previously formulated design principles, while from the natural point of view they are designed to protect the area against flooding. Water bodies can be regulated both naturally and artificially, thanks to easily are adapted to seasonal variability of the river and functional needs. The basic principle of reservoirs, in the context of mobile architecture, is based on mechanical water level regulation (in case of low water levels in the reservoirs – in order to transfer mobile river objects, the water must temporarily raise its level). Thanks to elevated platforms, constituting hiking-cycling tracks, movement all over the area is possible even by the very high level of waters. The green belt has the task to create water park, which integral elements are objects floating on the water. Thanks to this storage system, they can be used in the area of peninsula, where they enrich the area function. Stored architectural objects can be used to create small events in the sheltered place of park, in which perception of the same objects radically differs from those created on the opened area. Seasonality and regulation of the water park Reservoirs were created on the model of naturalistically formed extensive ponds, in which the circulation of water is ensured

by the current of Warta. Natural filters in a form of plants were applied in order to clean overflowed water from the river, which properties allow for: filtration, oxygenation and treatment (plants: hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum), milfoil (Myriophyllum), Elodea Canadensis, lemna, Glyceria Maxima). Ponds located on the northern part of peninsula are connected by channels, which combination depends on the level of water (reservoirs forming a single flow or separate layouts). The bottom and shores of ponds are built from sands and gravels, which constitute the waterbearing stratum. High level of groundwater causes connection with surface waters creating one hydraulic system. Everyday regulation and circulation of water on the area of ponds occurs in an extensive way, depending on the current season. There is a need to temporarily raise the water in selected channels in order to transfer floating objects between reservoirs (stock function). In order to enable such action, in reservoirs are installed pumping devices, providing possibility of temporary pumping the water that transports river objects. Water ponds may occur in four basic stages: entirely deprived of water, low water level (where the greater part of the area are green areas), high water level (water areas outweigh green areas – ponds still constitute separated water bodies), the highest water level (ponds are combining, thus there is a possibility to transport elements between separate reservoirs).

STRATEGY OF WARTA DEVELOPMENT IN POZNAN

Warta Development / Introduction

STRATEGY OF WARTA DEVELOPMENT located in Poznan author: Monika Wozniak

Master Thesis / Vol. 2

Master Thesis / vol.2, supervisor: arch. K. Borowski, PhD, Eng.

Natural Highway / The past and future of cities, associated with water resources, clearly shows the strong role of this natural element and its threats. An important advantage is the enormous potential resulting from the location of river, as well as the function and history of nearby buildings. Riverside cities along with the urban development in a natural way adapted rivers and lakes. Most importantly, exactly rivers are here a natural link between historical centers of cities. Incredible potential from the natural and non-collision connection between culturally and historically significant urban areas is a subject worth considering. Thanks to this natural motorway, there is possible exchange and cooperation between areas. With the shape and selected urban functions it is possible to compare the river to the road. At the same time, the river just constitutes original “undeniable” natural layout. Roads/motorways it is possible to treat as the secondary structure, which developed along with the growth of cities, while the river is its eternal integrity, which from the very beginning have shaped the layout and development of the area. Watercourses in the global context constitute the shortest connection between nature and centers of cities. Using this connection in communication between historical urban areas gives the possibility of simultaneous development of many cities thanks to the river connection. Focusing on the river development and using the possibility to create mobile structures can improve operation of the chain of cities connected with one watercourse. Urban Core / A significant role of the river can be seen in development of the city-forming. It the river basin just gave birth new civilizations, which along with the progress of urbanization turned small settlements into huge metropolitan areas. Watercourses for centuries were the source of food, water, enabled the development of agriculture and trade. Location of the city by the river was also particularly important for defensive and communications reasons. Multiplicity of positive aspects providing great possibilities of the economic development and economic settlements/cities considerably supported selection of river basins as the place of settlement. The role of river in shaping the urban structure changes along with

the development stage of the city. As a result of still increasing population, originally urbanized areas become insufficient, followed by slow growth of urban fabric. Cities at first located on one of river banks are getting, through bridges, connected with the second edge. A result of this process is expansion of the urban structure concentrating around the river, which at the same time becomes its centre point. Observation resulting from analysis of the historical development of riverside settlements shows the significant effect of watercourse on the growth of urban cities. Through the initial nature of river, exactly in this area are located important historically urban areas. This space creates a natural corridor, which crosses the entire city connecting areas of different spatial nature. This communication thread constitutes a great potential for the development of cities and available concepts of interactions with distant urban areas. Mobile Linear City / An interesting analogy for the river system it is possible to find in earlier quoted ideas of linear cities. Considering the river as a mobile linear city, which elements are forming free movable systems, can become an important factor that improves the urban structure. The plan of such functioning urban fabric would be based on real needs of the dynamically changing society. Unrestricted city would face new needs, hence providing constant development possibilities. The structure of mobile linear city would be closely connected to the inshore space, for which mobile urban functions would constitute this supplement. The main advantage is a line connection of city centers, offering great developmental potential. Mobile linear city can be considered as “supplementing” city. Functions located by the river bank along with functions in the area of watercourse can complement each other or create new spatial advantages. Properties located on the water provide huge arrangement prospects with a possibility to create settlements on the river (thus can be used as a completely independent urban system). The mobile linear city creates a smooth form, for which the need and context of surroundings defines the plan. The future and development of such comprehended city can considerably contribute for great improvement of the riverine development.

Local plan of river development / An aim of the project is to show the future potential of water, which in the concept was elaborated mainly in the context of urban public functions. Presented design program is an exploration of Mobile Linear City concept considered on the activation level of cities through floating elements. However, this is only a part of complete idea assuming full development of water areas. An important point is to draw attention to other urban functions, which the mobility significantly would change the face of urban planning of watercourse shores. In order to widen the reach and possibilities of floating objects, it is important to draw up local plans of developing riverbeds, which thanks for the unit of “Development Center of the River would be able to monitor the order of such dynamic environment. Outlining water areas up to specific functions would constitute preliminary direction taken by planners, which on the next stage, in an individual way, would treat both objects and context of the area. The main functions considered as an element of local development plans would include: housing function, cultural function, catering function, educational function, recreational function, transport, small trade and service function. This way developed in the future concept would provide success of the strategy, which approach to the urban layout differs significantly from traditional urban structures.

AREA / ACTIVISATION POINTS

Activation point / Action-Reaction / The river and inshore areas have their permanent functions. Bank development of the watercourse is created through analysis of the closest context taking into account the proximity of water. Along with the change of season, demand or in the case of organized municipal events, the river space can change its function. Thanks to additional mobile architectural elements, affecting the riverine area, the function of this area can be enriched with new possibilities activating the chosen riverbed area.

=

NEW AREA FUNCTION

Division of the area on mobile and permanent provides numerous arrangement and modification possibilities. Creating permanent elements (constant function on the banks) enriched by mobile elements (mobile function on the river) works on the principle of puzzle, where the aim is to get the living tissue of urban planning. Such an approach to designing river area is able to meet the current and future needs of residents. Planning and distribution of mobile elements should be carried out in an organized way, so that the mobile urban fabric could correspond to general urban plan.

amphitheatre observation point of nature

Both river and land functions constitute independent systems, which through combination activate areas giving the space a new functional meaning. Individual advantages of the space and objects are a great plus of the strategy, which independently used do not lose their values. The sample solution of “architectural puzzle is the amphitheater and mobile floating pool. In case of separate using these properties, stands can constitute the meeting place, observation of nature/rivers, while the pool can be used in every area of watercourse (during the summer season as a mobile pool, and in the winter period can be transformed

into a skating rink). After combining the function (e.g. in case of the need to organize sports events) the pool is located in the area of amphitheater, where users can gather to observe sports competitions. Such arrangement provides possibility of transforming and constant improving the mobile area. The linear layout of the river can be used to exchange architectural elements between cities and with other areas distant from the city centre. Thanks to applying such a strategy, we are able to largely eliminate the risk of not-exploiting the potential of object, which can be used in a different location.

AMPHITHEATRE ON THE WATER located on Durowska Lake in Warowiec author: Monika Wozniak

Bachelor Thesis

Bachelor Thesis, supervisor: arch. A. Bonenberg, PhD, Eng.

Amphitheatre is located on the Durowo lake in Wagrowiec. Close connection to the city centre and possibility of future development initiated the idea to create a flexible object, that down the road will help to improve touristic and cultural growth of the region. Potential of water provoke a concept of innovative floating theatre, that thanks to combining art and nature, will creates unique artistic experience. Mobile part of the theater gives a possibility of artistic events that can impact not only lake themselves but also improve urban development of the region. Factors determining the object’s shape: -Creating the shape that complementarily and fluently interacts with the lake bank’s landscape -Opening building to the lake -Preserving of the coastal greenery - small number of connection points between the object and land -Creating object that harmoniously complement the whole of the lake promenade and don’t disturb existing context

Amphitheatre / Introduction

Acustic panel system’s variability

AMPHITHEATRE ON THE WATER

Acoustic panel system’s variability / Not only the stage’s and additional platforms are modifiable. An important factor, given the constant changes in positioning and locating of the stage, is modification of acoustic properties of the stage. Mobility become the main reason for creating the concert shell, build entirely from mobile acoustic panels. Technical possibility to make changes in the angle of inclination and materials forming panels (reflective, absorptive, scattering) allows the acoustics to be adapted to any temporary requirements. Moreover, variability of panels’ placement, in terms of height, creates another options for modifying the shape of the concert shell, in compliance with upcoming requirements. Lighting and sound wires are assemble inside of tubes forming frames (to which panels are fixed). Lightweight construction of the concert shell is caused of the need to lessen the weight of the stage, so that it does not excessively overload the air tanks system keeping the object afloat. Stage and additional platforms / Additional platforms allow for a flexible forming of the stage shape and position. Owing to a hexagonal projection their shape is easy to arrange. Platforms have the possibility to move within the entire area of the lake. Due to an easy connection method, introducing new arrangement cause no problems. This unique proposal creates numerous

Three basic ways of stage arrangement: 1). The stage sailing out into the lake. This type of arrangement gives an opportunity of experience performances from within other floating objects (such as boats, kayaks). 2). Dividing the audience into smaller spectator groups, which allows for the creation of a more intimate ambience and a better contraction between an artist and a viewer. 3). Treating the whole space between the audience as a stage; the surface of the water transforms into a stage and the action is held across the entire internal area.

is used to produce electricity, and during the hot days it is a cooldown for a city. It is renewable - rainfall renews the water in the reservoir, so the fuel is almost always there. Building behaves as water itself, during the day it remains gaseous state, it becomes more blurry, and after dark transforms to solid

The building is entirely connected with nature. It arise from the water. The energy is provided from area recourses. Moving water

state, which is more transparent, so we can spot the columns more precise.

The idea behind the project is to transfer the filmmaking process at the building. The whole process is exposed in a theatrical way, viewers don’t have to enter the tower to discover the inside. They may observe it from the audience. The new world of film is being created, presenting true spectacle, surrounded by curtain of water.

THE FUTURE OF BRNO CENTER

Brno Center / Introduction

THE FUTURE OF BRNO CENTER in Czech Republic authors: Magdalena Skop, Monika Wozniak, Mateusz Jozwiak, superviror: arch. Radoslaw Biskupski, PhD, Eng.

Urban competition

Urban Competition

Main purpose of urban design was to link new design with existing structure. Design ideas for this part of Brno should be cohesive with what we already have. Brno has very complex history in shaping the city image. Project had main assumptions - to create a clear district identity by establishing series of engaging public spaces and to maximize the urban connectivity among all facets of life within the neighborhood. Prime design idea is to create a way that would lead people through entire area, and made them intrigued about what space offers to them. The main axis becomes urban core - commercial pedestrian street, that creates public spaces for everyone. It is not boring, and not simple, while we are walking by, we see different angles, structures. The street goes all way to the river, and the area over the riverside. It connects. It leads. It astonishes. Railway buildings have the highest value in design process. This part should be highlighted hence our project anticipate modernization and reinforcement public matters by creating shared area for everyone. We believe that by our design we encourage people to think green, and go sustainable in many ways. Social aspects of the area are fulfilling by many public spaces. The residential buildings are eco-friendly and have a height and proportions that are comfortable to the users. Area provides interesting spaces and make the whole place unique. Communication and transport is diverse which gives people new possibilities of translocate. Adding more bicycle roads, water trams and streets designed particularly for pedestrians encourage

people to give up car transportation. We wanted to design a system of infrastructural pathways, so the area is reconnected and attracts individuals or investors. Our project is a great way to introduce further economic growth. Green infrastructure in the area, landscape aspects of the design, environmental sustainability We had strategy to embrace the existing green areas. We looked up for inspiration and gathered information that makes green spaces friendly. We established many green areas within the quarters as well as on the main axis. The green area surrounds the whole terrain naturally. We believe that any good design is sustainable and that design to represent this idea should be responsible. Green buildings are a ‘’hallmark of economically sound business decisions, thoughtful environmental decisions and smart human impact decisions”. Some buildings own green roofs and most of them is designed with sustainable materials. Design made use of many existing structures such as old rails transformed to park and relaxing zones. We were inspired by spaces that bring people together (Highline, New York City). Moreover, with nature aspects - water represented huge potential, it provided other type of transport – water-trams. In addition, designed axis through entire area gives cycling opportunities. We believe that this type of road design with existing river would encourage people to use different types of transport – bicycles, water trams, regular trams or walking, rather than cars.

Urban design and quality of public spaces / Main purpose of urban design was to link new design with existing structure. Design ideas for this part of Brno should be cohesive with what we already have. Brno has very complex history in shaping the city image. Historic legacy in surroundings is grandiose. The heritage – old town nearby, station building, bridge structures along with many brick buildings have a precious value. We had an idea to create clear and strong connection between old town, new urbanistic tissue, nearby river and part over the riverside. What is more we wanted to articulate an inspiring vision for the revitalization of the area. We created a leading axis. The axis which become a shared zone for pedestrians, cyclist and in some emergencies and deliveries – cars, is crucial to urban design and its spaces. Idea asserts connection between railways, its buildings, and two parts of the city – linked by footbridges and transitions. Main axis is showing the way designed part of Brno is going to expand. Next important elements are public spaces and subsequently the private ones. Assumption of growth is flexible, would gain new values and zones after time.

How overpopulation process is affecting environment and city structure? How to reduce CO2 emission produced by building industry? What is the future of huge concrete blocks? How people can deal with microapartment issues? Which social and economical issues are caused by overpopulation process? How architectural solutions can reduce global warming effects? The project is based in Hong Kong as an example of a possible way of using modular building extension. The solution is dedicated to the use in different climate conditions, buildings sizes and with a use of different wood types all over the world. Thanks to the flexible method of assembly, and easy access to proposed materials, system can be used not only to extend existing buildings but also to design free standing constructions. Modular wood system will perfectly work as well in renovation of prefabricated blocks from communism era, as well as in vertical

need to be worked out by finding a solution that may improve the existing situation. Economical and social issues / This issue is particularly pressing in a huge metropolises where number of inhabitants reaches millions of people. In Hong Kong in 2010 about 80,000 people were living in inadequate housing, including so-called ‘cage homes’, cubicle apartments, roof-top houses and small sub-divided and partitioned units. These homes and living spaces are usually less than 9.3 Square meters (100 square feet) in size, but cage homes tend to be just 1.9 Square meters (20 square feet). These residents face multiple housing-related problems, including poor ventilation, small living spaces, stressful relationships with their neighbors and, despite the poor quality accommodation, unaffordable rents. In Hong Kong’s on 1,108 square kilometers of land live 7.19 Million people. They have the world’s densest skyline where the size of the apartment is not sufficient for habitants.

extentions of the buildings. Overpopulation effects / Human population is growing like never before, and according to the latest projections, by 2045 the world would likely reach about 9 billion inhabitants. As a result of this huge expansion of our presence on Earth we can notice an increasing growth of global warming effects, climate changes, air and water pollutions, loss of lands, sea level rise etc. Increasing population rate leads to continuous growth of cities (urbanization), industrialization, social and housing problems, ecosystem degradation etc. One of the most serious overpopulation effect is the housing problem. The biggest influence of this process is noticeable in huge, dense metropolises where a significant number of people have to live in inhumane conditions. Overpopulation causes reducing of living areas to unacceptable sizes which extensively brings down living standards. This kind of housing policy causes a lot of psychical, health, and social problems that

Which solution may improve living standard in huge metropolises where housing sizes don’t meet human needs? What is the future of huge blocks? How can we relatively easily change already existing structures to make it livable? Additional space, obtained from building extension, is designed to create living room areas in the apartments, the existing part is devoted to storage, sleeping space, kitchen, and bathroom area. Vertical building extension is dedicated for common public area and creates multileveled green garden located on the roof of the building. This new apartment arrangement will improve living standards of the inhabitants. It’ll give back normal structure of apartment by adding extra space for resting, family/friends meeting and other home activities. Finally, inhabitants will be able to spend more of their time in a nice space instead of overwhelmed cluttered, tiny multi-functional room.

Construction solutions / Construction system is based on triangle module plan that is adapted both in slab and wall geometry. Structural wood elements are made from Metsä Wood’s Kerto, laminated veneer lumber (LVL). Load-bearing elements are made from Kerto-Q LVL panels supported by Kerto-S beams. Base structure of the module (created from panels) can be used for walls as well as for roof or floors. Thanks to simplicity and modularity of elements structure can be adapted to creates countless design solutions. Facade finishing can be done by studs, glass, panels, mesh etc. This flexibility and ability to adaptation to different requirements reflects basic project assumptions. Wood system meets esthetic and special requirements of existing context, and creates possibility of future development.

Student Competition

New London Library created to express balance between nature and architecture. Place to experience reading in a completely new way, where books are not a static elements, but rather an artistic expression inspired by nature. Books create living structure meant to remind a blossom garden, where people can walk surrounded by books hanging from the structure. New Library is based on a grid plan, where big number of square units are formed as a small gardens. Important design statement was to create connection between street, library and green area next to Thames River, to attract people to enter Book Garden and discover new London library. Context - Crating connection between nature (existing park) and new library function - Combination of green and urban plaza in front of the building create public city square, easy to access from street, place to stop and rest - Space continuation - interior plan directly correspond to external square gardens, library function “grows” on the top of the green garden - Back of the building creates connection between library

and green areas next to Thames River, small pavilions and square gardens are aimed to attract people from river side to enter the building Functional division: Working area (Quiet area on the top of the building, where working space is combined with small green gardens. Double storey room contains: administration office, file room, video library room, reprographics room, computer room, working area, investigation rooms, terrace/winter gardens). Book shelf area (This part contains not only books and circulation, but also small reading areas. Paths are created on a greed plan, books are hanging on the steel bars). Ground floor area (Ground floor combination of a small gardens and library function are opened up to the book shelf area. This part of the building contains all public facilities: exhibition room, magazine and newspaper room, auditorium, garden areas, leisure centre, children’s centre, encounter area, restaurant. Nowadays books are not just a traditional paper sheets. People over a years have developed plenty of ways how books can be reading, and what they can be transform into (audiobooks, digital books, magazine and newspaper, movies and games based on books etc.). Facade is intended to show all kind of „books” in action, makes them a part of a huge front window, where people can choose their own way of “reading”. Sculptural installation is just a base for people to create unique appearance and shows “reading” as an artistic performance.

NEW DISTRICT OF CITY OF AGUASCALIENTES in Mexico author: Monika Wozniak

Mall building / The main idea behind the mall building is to keep spatial continuity by connecting green plaza with shopping center. Roof of the mall is slopping down to meet central part of the district in the lowest point. This approach gives a good connection between all district functions. Roof structure of the mall is opened up to the plaza by huge skylights that maintain a good sun exposure in the building. Commercial building / The main idea behind the business center is to break down object function in order to create community of smaller buildings connected by public spaces. This part of the district is visually closed by fence made from perforated sun panels. Mass timber solution -Wood construction can store tones of carbon, when concrete buildings cause carbon emission to atmosphere -Reduce carbon and other green house gas emissions -Wood is one of the most sustainable method of construction -Wood building can be erected even in a half of the time of traditional structure

One of the most important project assumption is to create environmentally friendly district, that not only absorbs pollutions, but also improve air and environment condition. New district is aimed to use sustainable solutions that will be apply to newly built objects as well as to existing ones (use of renewable source of energy-wind, sun energy, energy from ground, rain and ground water and sustainable construction materials - wood as one of the most important construction material). Really important issue for the project is to eliminate CO2 emission produced by cars thanks to moving roads to the underground parking area. This solution will completely eliminates cars from the green district thus we will entirely cut out CO2 emission produces by automobiles. Housing building / The main idea behind housing building is to break down the basic volume in order to creates openwork structure with bigger number of public spaces, and green traces. Modular apartments are shifted to create small roof gardens, this design assumption will help to improve both ecological and social aspects of design. Wood modules are connected by central circulation path with outdoor corridors.

One of the most important project assumption is to create environmentally friendly district, that not only absorb pollutions, but also is going to improve air and environment condition. New district is aim to show sustainable solutions that could be apply to newly built objects as well as to existing ones. Two main ideas are to use possible removable source of energy (wind, sun energy, energy from ground, rain and ground water) and sustainable construction materials (wood as one of the most important construction material). That actions are going to help improve air and environment condition. Really important issue for the project is to eliminate co2 emission produced by cars. Major task in infrastructure design is to eliminate cars from the plot, in order to create area where the main means of transport are going to be walking and bicycle riding. Project proposal is to move roads to the underground parking area. People are going to use one of the three designed parking areas, where they can leave car and directly go to the mall, housing area, outdoor plaza or commercial center. This solution completely eliminates cars from the green district thus we will entirely cut out co2 emission produces by cars.

Enviromentally friendly solutions Mass timber solution Advantages: -Wood construction can store tones of carbon, when concrete buildings cause carbon emission to atmosphere -Reduce carbon and other green house gas emissions -Wood is one of the most sustainable means of construction -Wood duildin can be erected even in a half of the time of traditional structure -Wood contribute to hold back climate change process -Proceedings with wood carbon neutral buildings -Buildings and other wood elements/structures life cycle -Carbon storage in wood - recycling issues -Every wood element should be rebuild into the new structure to no allowed co2 to -return to atmosphere -Wood buildings should not be burned or decomposed in order to storage carbon

COMMERCIAL AREA Area located on the lifted up platform above the mall. Commercial space is divided into the smaller buildings in order to create lower scale of the objects. Breaking down basic volume is a proposal meant to create small building community (instead of one big structure) surrounded by public plazas located inbetween the objects. Commercial area is a new district within existing one. Separated from outside by perforated sun panels that creates fence around the structure. This „railings proposal gives also a sense of community and create a shade on the plaza during a sunny days. Huge canopy is design as an observation deck that gives an extensive view on the city. Breaking the huge structure into the lower buildings is intended to create smaller commercial structures connected by green plazas. Commercial area platform gives shadows across the urban plaza, where people can take rest during a sunny days, and during a nights enjoy illumination on the canopy. This idea is also aimed to create remarkable character of a new aguascalientes district.

URBAN PLAZA ON THE TOP OF THE MALL This area is designed to create public connection in between the mall and commercial space. Small hill formed as an mall roof is slopping down to meet green plaza. Urban square is creating direct connection between surrounding functions (green plaza, mall and commercial area). Thanks to canopy plaza is shaded during a day what gives freshness over a really worm weather time. Plaza also creates a lot of possibilities of use like: outdoor cinema, lectures, exhibitions, concerts etc. Urban hill has a really strong connection with the mall that is opened up by huge skylights incorporated in the hill.

GROUND FLOOR AREA Ground floor area of the entirely district is designed to create a smooth connection between different functions. This open space is devoted to social activities, where people can meet together and take a rest. Diversity of the different functions is connected by green line, ground floor contains mall that is easily accessible from urban plaza, central green plaza and housing building. Small wood paths are created to makes connection between urban plaza and housing building. All buildings contains the most public facilities in the ground floor.

153

NEW DISTRICT OF CITY OF AGUASCALIENTES IN MEXICO

HOUSING BUILDING Housing building is located at the end of the district to keep some distance from more public areas. This proposal gives sense of privacy for habitants and at the same time keeps visual and urban connection with the rest of the district. Building is created from a small wood modules containing apartments. Separate flats are connected by central staircase. All apartments have access to the green terraces with an extensive view on the city.

Changing of building apperience / An important factor, in terms of object’s perception, is not only an observer’s position, but also a time of a day or night. The context in which the building is set is so strong, that designing an equally strong object could make an impression of an overwhelming and indigested space. By designing a transparent elevation, the building appears to be a clear white cube during a day. It is only after taking a closer look at the object that we notice smaller cubes within. By making use of building’s illumination effect, during the night time, when the

neighbor buildings become less visible, the inner elevation of the building comes to the fore. 1. A perception of the building during the day time using a transparent elevation. 2. Brewer y in Miedzyrzecz is located above a small stream, that divides plot into two basic areas. Upper side is mainly devoted for production purposes, while down side is representative part of the complex. Brewer y building is connected with small hop fields, located on the back of the production area. Thanks to small river, greater part of required energy can be supply by running water. Another important function provided by the brewer y is a touristic facility. It ensures a possibility of obser ving a process of brewing directly during the production. Visitors move along a main corridor designated according to subsequent stages of production on the factor y floor. In order to make it easier to obser ve, there is a system allowing for tracking of manufacturing operations through glazed elements of the floor. What is visible on the projection is a continuous corridor, the shape of which corresponds to the production line on the ground floor. The entire touristic zone is topped with beer drinking room, which offers a view of hop fields and warehouses, as well as brewer y’s technical buildings. A cross-section of the building shows fragments of glazing on the floor, through which tourists can obser ve the production hall.

MODERNISATION OF THE SHEEPFOLD located in in Zarnowiec author: Monika Wozniak

Academic project

Academic Project, supervisor: arch. K. Sobczynska, PhD, Eng.

Old Sheepfold is an object located in Zarnowiec, near Poznan. Building is a part of the resort complex that contains small summer houses, parks, frontal plaza and parking area. The main idea behind modernization is to create new spatial quality, that will help to revitalize degraded area, by giving new architectural and functional meaning to the old sheepfold building. Design concept was developed in two basic steps: 1). First phase breaking down closed structure of the building - in order to allow sunlight to come inside of the object (external glazed structure), 2). Second phase - dividing internal space into two areas, by adding cafe boxes (inspired by sheep fold shape) and additional metal structure to support both old and new building construction. Sheepfold opening is facing garden area, and it’s meant to create spatial connection between outdoor and indoor space. Building contains: restaurant, cafe, winter garden, bar, kitchen, front office, door-keeper’s room and toilets.

LAND SHAPER migration system author: Monika Wozniak Student Competition

Student Competition

Surface water, as a new district that gives a connection between the biggest metropolis in the world, a new efficient migration system, created as a part of the Water City. Land Shaper is a global urban system that gives a fresh look at migrations of people and city components. It will allows users to change a way of thinking about resettlement and putting roots down in a different locations. New moving cities would fulfil the growing demands of society changes in the context of both housing and working . This smart city system would gives a new meaning to a migration process, and an answer to globalization tendency in the modern society. Water system is more efficient way of living. It will gives a full independent in a way where and how people want to live. This urban strategy is based on two elements: city towers and mobile modules. Every unite can be created in an individual way, so users can design their own piece of land, and settle down wherever they want to. Migration cities will be connected by water and reach every end of the World. That approach would gives a full flexibility in where and how people want to live. How to create a city that will reach every corner of the World? How globalisation and easier exchange of information, caused by technological development, influences people’s lives? What integral component joins the biggest metropolises? How to create a building that allows to move around the World without any spatial restrictions? How to facilitate the increasingly popular process of changing of home or job? The answer to all the questions is WATER! Water covers 71 % of Earth’s surface and reaches the furthest corners of the World. It is an integral component filtering through all the continents. Water connects the greatest World’s metropolises, thus creating one of the most basic means of transport. The possibilities which water brings create unlimited prospects for it’s use, determining a direction of urban planning worth developing. Organising the mobility of metropolitan functions and individual housing needsgive a new way of looking at the city. A city where water is the main means of transport, determining the range of influence of metropolitan mobile functions.

Civilisational changes lead to an increasing need of migration among people all over the World. People move between the biggest metropolises, looking for new living space. Globalisation and the increased openness and people’s, organisations and even whole companies mobility gives birth to new social needs. Changes in the attitude to residential area make people get a foothold less often. This new approach, especially among young people, indicates a growing need for changing the domicile, connected to work, education etc. Enviromental issues Why moving a part of the city on water is a good investment for the future? How does global warming affect the environment? The process of global warming leads to a constant rise of the

to flooding of a growing number of land and hence to diminishing the living space. Searching for alternative solutions for the future has become the new goal, which will allow to regain the lost land giving the opportunity to free shaping of the land. Social issue What are the causes of human migration? The causes includes not only positive aspects like education, work or travels but are also caused by social, political, environmental and economic aspects. The rate of human migration has increased and affect not only people that moves, but also affects the sending countries. Search of a better place is becoming more and more popular among modern socity, and we are inclined to think that this process will be continously glowing.

CREATE YOUR OWN PIECE OF LAND AND START TO SHAPE THE WORLD. Manual – how to use modular system?

1. Do you often change the place you live in ? Design your own piece of land and find a place where you want to settle! Park your unit on the structure and become a part of the city.

2. Do you want to build a skyscraper for the housing/office/industry etc. function? Gather a group of people interested in the idea and create your own skyscraper wherever you want! All you need Is the framework, the modules and the blueprint! LAND SHAPER

3. Do you need to create your own independent city ? Create you island on water! All you need is a good idea, people that will be a part of the city, and system elements. Now you can design new land wherever you want!

Solutions in water - Urban Exchange System / How to make new social/living tendecy more efficience? How to lead and facilitate the process of migration? How to make migration more comfortable, both physically and mentally? How to ease the development of global organisations/ companies? How to increase the influence range of function/living space? Creation of a permanent structures on the Water Districts in a different parts of the World. Serving a role of a base, a “parking spot” for mobile land, created by individual modules owned either privately or by whole organisations/companies. Each of the modules is individually shaped by the owner, who creates his or her own mobile piece of land. Water surface - Water City is created by districts that are located in a differet part of the World.

LAND SHAPER

Ecological approches / Water districts have direct access to renewable source of energy like water, good sue exposure and wind. That factors makes living in a Water City even more efficient, in terms of energy production! Shaping the modules into structures can be done in any way, every cratered skyscraper has an inbuilt elevator which enables a quick restoration of the modules on water, where they are automatically ready for swapping the place. The frameworks are the “parking lots for modules, which create a static and urban planning adapted to different spatial needs. Self-sufficiency of both the modules and the structure is an important aspect. Modules are shaped in a way that enables them to use of renewable sources of energy. Setting the structures on water gives a direct access to the basic sources of renewable energy. Both the individual modules and the whole structure are equipped with water and wind turbines, as well as solar panels.

BIONICS - ROOTS AS A CITY FOUNDATION bionics stratedy for mountain city author: Monika Wozniak

Academic project

Academic Project, supervisor: arch. eng. D. Kabacinska

Every year a significant increase of population is being recorded. Overpopulation in cities is getting worse and worse, metropolitan areas are growing like never before, what as a consequence creates urbanization problems. This actions will cause a need to seek alternative places for settlement in the future. Increasing number of population leads not only to the raise of the urbanization level of new territories, but also negatively influences climate of the Earth. Lifestyles of people become more industrialized and harmful for climate changes. Process of global warming causes melting of glaciers what as a result leads to rising of a sea level. The area of land will become smaller and people will face a challenge of searching for a places to settle in a more demanding climate conditions. Solutions existing in nature / Climate changes are leading to rise of a sea level what decrease land area. In the future there may be a need of settlement on the grounds that haven’t been available for people before. Urbanization of sloppy mountain ranges may be inevitable. Steep and stony mountain slopes, often affected by avalanches and ground vibrations, constitute extremely difficult conditions to erect buildings. Traditional construction methods do not meet these requirements. Contemporary methods of laying the foundation are not advanced enough to create building structures on the stony steep slopes. Strong ground erosion, avalanches and wind should determine a shape of the building to a significant level. Modern methods of creation of foundations as well as geometry of a building may not face climate changing and weather conditions in the long term. Installation options / The creation of external construction, hung on tightly tensioned structural bands, is one of the optional system for the structure. This structure may extend between particular mountain ranges. There is also an opportunity to create an internal structures inside of the thick part of the root construction. Due to their openwork surface, the light comes easily through the external coating to the internal part of the system.

Construction of the structure / The construction of particular fibres which create external constructi on net fits the internal structure of the roots. The layers of the structure are of oval shape. Their external coating creates constructive layer which contain transport area. The external layer constitutes protection for the whole structure. construction is ver y flexible and resistant. Smal structural elements additionally support the maintenance of the structure in the ground. There is space, under external skin, filled with small, movable elements which easily change the shape of the structure because of ability to changeing position. This facilitates the adjustment to any conditions and types of substrate.

Flexibility of the structure / The construction of particular fibers, which creates external construction net, fits the internal structure of the roots. External coating of the structure creates constructive layer which contain transport area. Thanks to high flexibility and resistance external layer constitutes protection for the whole structure. Small structural elements additionally support the maintenance of the structure in the ground. Strong and flexible construction acts as partition between internal transport bunches and the layer of cells. These perforations are designed to maintain transport/communication spaces, lead the installation process, uptake of water from soil and ventilation.

THE EARTH FRAME new living strategy author: Monika Wozniak Student Competition

Student competition

Over a year’s people have been trying to introduce numberless strategies to save a future of planet Earth. Despite of it, World condition is constantly getting worst without any certainty of the future improvements. If smaller actions aren’t going to give any convenience effects, World may need some new permanent and radical solutions. Main project idea is to create an opportunity for planet to slowly turn back to past condition-back to the time when Earth wasn’t affected that much by human activity. Initiate possibility for Earth to regenerate itself, by separate source of devastation from natural environment. Reverse of the process - Earth is going back to natural, green condition. For the centuries World has been progressively populated by people. Current number reach 68000 million, and population rate is continuously growing. In the last 25 years number of people living on the Earth reach level as never before in the whole history. According to the most recent United Nations estimates, the human population of the world is expected to reach 8 billion people in the spring of 2024. The effects of overpopulation are extremely dangerous for the future of the World. Most of the environmental damage being seen in the last fifty years is caused by the growing number of people. Increasing population rate leads to continuous growth of cities (urbanization), industrialization, social problems etc. As a consequences of this actions we can notice degradation of natural environment, what in the future may cause complete destruction of Earth ecosystem (global warming, climate change, air and water pollutions, loss of land, raise sea level, disappearing of wild animals etc.). Despite of many effort people put into change current and future situation, that advanced process is really hard to reverse. The challenge of stopping overpopulation is now one of the most important issue to solve by humanity. If this tendency is not going to be stopped, next generations may struggle with more and more complicated and progressive issues. Future predictions don’t give any doubt about decreasing condition of the World environment and society. That forecasts provoke many questions about ideas and solutions that may solve this growing problems.

New city structure / Structure, created on a simple grid layout, allows releasing planet from civilization impact. This strategy can be achieved by moving cities above the ground level. The idea of separation of nature from negative influence of civilization development can be a chance for environment recovery. Thanks to openwork structure and many circulation paths new system will allows to keep people and nature close together.
