What is a heart murmur?

A heart murmur is an extra, unusual sound in your heartbeat that happens when your blood doesn’t flow smoothly through your heart.

Abnormal heart murmurs can be a sign of heart valve disease, a potentially fatal condition that is treatable if caught quickly.

So what did our Kiwi athletic heroes do to avoid all the backslapping and the kudos? Snell and Halberg hitched a ride to the ruins of Pompeii, and booked into a hotel in the seaside resort of Sorrento, followed by water transport to the Isle of Capri. They enjoyed the first fruits of their successes. They were quickly recognised at reception, and were up-graded to a much better room!

Fast forward to today. Halberg’s feats of athleticism are perpetuated in the recently completed Murray Halberg Retirement Village, located in Lynfield, Auckland. In the public areas of this village are many large photographs depicting him, as we all recall him: racing and beating the opposition. 
