Chairman’s Report by Patrick Gay AM. GCCM CHAIRMAN

Welcome to our 30th edition of Marina News

As most people are aware, my company (the Gay Group) took over Gold Coast City Marina entirely as of August 6th. The Gay Group also ceased to have any association with Australasian Marine Imports (AMI). The Leigh-Smith family have returned to their core business and I wish them every future success.

Gold Coast City Marina has a good reputation in the boating world, and it is my intention to ensure that reputation is enlarged and enhanced. Steve Sammes is my General Manager, and I am most happy with the current staffing and management process, confident in the fact that they and we will do an excellent job for the boating public. The Gold Coast City Marina has been rebranded with eye catching new signage and a brand new attitude. Our staff and tenants are all enthusiastic about the new community spirit emerging from the changes. We look forward to working with our friends to ensure a better boating experience for all.

which I believe will be for the better operation of Gold Coast City Marina. Our tenants are equal to the best and together, we intend to develop a reputation second to none in the industry. I look forward to all associated to provide that support. The Marine Industry, through the global financial crisis, took a big hit. The time is now for that to turn around and get back to the buoyant market our complex, and indeed the precinct, deserves. The Marine Expo in October was the biggest yet, with an increased participation from exhibitors and a wonderful exhibition of marine skills, along with some very entertaining performances.

We have invested in solar panels for the entire complex, which On a very positive note, we will improve our green efficiency recently met with the Deputy dramatically, some 1500 panels will provide a capacity of 255kW.

Premier, The Hon. Jeff Seeney. His support for the marine precinct in general and support for the dredging of the Coomera River was total and unqualified. It was refreshing to sit with a political dignitary, explain to him our needs and have him confirm most positively, his Government in conjunction with the Gold Coast Waterways Authority, commit to having the Coomera River and Southport Broadwater dredged to a level of 3.5m lowest astronomical tide. Well done Queensland Government, and our local member, Michael Crandon, who, once given the details of our plight with depth of the river, took up the challenge and delivered the goods. With the addition of a 250 tonne travel lift, our capacity will be dramatically increased – catering for super yachts from all over the world. Previously, because

of the river depth, we were losing a lot of work to the Brisbane River, even though their preference was the Marine Precinct. Finally, with the support of Federal, State and Local Government, we are seeking a Customs Immigration Centre to be based at the Gold Coast Waterways Authority site, this will allow overseas vessels to come straight into the Broadwater, thus eliminating the arduous trip to the Brisbane River and making it infinitely more appealing for people to come direct to the Gold Coast and our own precinct. In conclusion, I see the future extremely bright, Trenton and I look forward to working with you for the future of our industry in general and Gold Coast City Marina in particular.

We have also ordered from Italy, a 250 tonne Straddle Carrier, which will be a world market leader. Additionally, we have purchased a 45 tonne self propelled hydraulic trailer which will improve our hardstand handling facilities and efficiency with a capacity to place boats in close proximity to each other, as opposed to the travel lift, which requires several metres separation. In all, there have been a considerable number of changes, www.gccm.com.au

The view from the bridge by Steve Sammes CMM GENERAL MANAGER

As outlined in the Chairman’s report, Patrick Gay’s company now owns the Gold Coast City Marina entirely. With the changes that have occurred, comes a fresh and invigorating enthusiasm to lift the site further in terms of service, aesthetics, new equipment and environmental sustainability. Gold Coast City Marina became operational in January 2000. The facility was the first of its kind to be built in the Southern Hemisphere: it has raised the bar throughout the industry and set a standard that other facilities needed to follow. It is home to many marine industry trades, highly respected and recognised by our customers. In essence, true craftsmanship. Unlike other service facilities, the GCCM steers clear of entering into a ‘discounting regime’ as a means to win business. When you have a collaborative critical mass of skilled industry professionals, a high-quality level of service is assured for our customers. Quality service delivered by likeminded people is the key for us moving forward. We have embarked on a proactive marketing campaign to win business from overseas boating customers, and by saying this; it is not just the Super Yacht sector, but also the broad-based cruising

fraternity. This year has seen the GCCM represented not only at our National Boat Shows, but also overseas, such as venues at Tahiti and Ft Lauderdale. With the arrival of the new 250 tonne capacity straddle carrier in January 2015, it is important that the marina markets this news so the message ‘shipyard of choice’ is broadcast far and wide. Our attendance at the end of October to the Ft Lauderdale International Boat Show saw not only GCCM staff represented at our stand within the Australian Marine Pavilion, but also some of the GCCM tenants. It is refreshing to see the shared objective by our business partners to increase our business. On this note, the boat show uniforms we wore were branded ‘Marine United’ alongside the GCCM logo. A reflection that I believe is the cornerstone for the formation that the facility was built and formed on. In closing, I am looking forward to the future months ahead and working diligently with our staff and the many people that make the Gold Coast City Marina a great place to bring your boat for storage, maintenance, refit and repair.

ANTI-FOULING: CRITICAL FOR A VESSEL’S ONGOING PRESERVATION AND PERFORMANCE by Daniel McKenzie A vessel permanently moored in the water will be accumulating organic growth and organisms to it’s undersides. As these organisms continue to grow and spread, the vessel’s structure and performance will become compromised. Anti-fouling is a process fundamental to combating and protecting against these issues and impurities therefore it is required on a regular basis. Known as an application of “bottom paint” it is a specialised coating applied to the hull of a ship or boat, ensuring the performance, ongoing health and preservation of the vessel while providing durability. Bradford Marine, Gold Coast City Marina’s on site partner in anti-fouling, offers a superior antifouling service with removal and replacement as well as first time application for all marine craft. David Hanton from Bradford Marine said a vessel left in the water without ongoing antifouling, can accumulate excessive growth and become inoperable. “What would happen if not regularly anti-fouled is a boat would attract a lot of growth that would break down the anti-foul while delaminating the hull,”. “It would cause blistering in the paintwork, so water gets in behind the gel coating and starts to crack and blister which creates big problems. “You see a lot of boats where antifouling has been neglected, and people think it will still perform, but this certainly is not the case.”

8

www.gccm.com.au

Guide to Anti-Fouling: Benefits - Aside from ongoing maintenance and integrity issues as a result of not anti-fouling, the maximum speed of the vessel decreases as its hull becomes fouled with marine growth. Some marine growth, such as shipworms, can bore into the hull causing severe damage over time, and the vessel may transport harmful marine organisms to other areas. Anti-fouling combats all these impurities by removing them, protecting against them and ensuring it is harder for them to return. The vessel will not only be protected by anti-foul, but will be able to perform at its optimum with regular maintenance and application. How Is It Done? The Gold Coast City Marina possesses a 250 tonne boat lift and forklifts to bring a vessel, depending on its size out of the water during the anti-fouling process. Once removed from the water, the vessel is given a water blast

then placed on a hard stand for a light sanding and a clean-up of the shaft and running gear. An eproxy or primer is then applied to any delicate spots, and multiple spray coats of anti-foul are applied to give the vessel a protective coating. How often should we do it? How often anti-fouling needs to be applied on the vessel will depend on its size and condition. A boat with alloy legs for instance, attracts more exposure to growth and impurities in the water and will require anti-fouling treatment every 12 months. A shaft drive boat, which attracts less exposure will require anti-fouling every 15-18 months. Visual The removal of a vessel from the water during the anti-fouling process is critical. A vessel out of the water will show up impurities such as hull imperfections, cracks, osmosis and blistering. These imperfections will vary and in timber boats they can be worm damage, dry rot, loose caulking or impact damage. In steel and

aluminium boats, they can be cracked welds, electrolysis, rust, corrosion and impact damage. Damage can be hard to assess in other options such as underwater cleaning, and there is no substitute for a visual inspection. While anti-fouling is a necessity, it is not the only maintenance that may be required to ensure the optimum condition of the vessel and numerous additional services are also available. As the Gold Coast City Marina is a one-stop boating shop, a range of services carried out by painters, electricians, builders and detailers are available and a range of marine detailing packages from a simple wash and shine to waxing, complete hull cuts, polishing, spray painting and full internal detailing is available. With the dry dock facilities available at the Marina, a boat can be out of the water and back in the water within days depending on the size and job required.

GOLD COAST CITY MARINA ‘POWERING THE WAY’ AHEAD and reducing their carbon footprint Gold Coast City Marina owners, Patrick & Trenton Gay have recently made a huge investment that places the facility firmly at the top of the world’s list having just recently installed the largest solar powered system providing power to their marina. In excess of 1,500 solar panels are lining the roof tops of the marine industry factories throughout the site, taking advantage of the Queensland sunshine and

soaking it up to generate power for use throughout the shipyard and marina. The output created during daylight averages some 255 kilowatts of electricity. GCCM General Manager, Steve Sammes explained “The key to maximizing the full benefit of solar energy production today is to ensure power is being used at a facility throughout the day, not just feeding back into the grid At the GCCM, banks of panels have

been strategically placed to feed into our site supply meters at various points”. Patrick Gay chose a local Gold Coast business to supply and fit the $500k system at the facility. Coastech (QLD) Pty Ltd, based at Biggera Waters, were the successful tender group for the project. The owner of Coastech, Greg Hughes said, “We were very excited to be given the opportunity to firstly submit our tender, but the outcome is a huge reward for our Gold Coast business to acquire.” The expanse of panels sited on

This investment at Gold Coast City Marina once again raises the bar in terms of marine industry innovation and environmental best practice. The Rotary Club of Coomera River by Jennifer Dryer CLUB PRESIDENT The Rotary Club of Coomera River is a vibrant and pro-active club with a very committed membership. The club has cemented several successful annual fund raising events and has proudly contributed consistently to the local and broad-based community plus overseas projects. The Gold Coast International Marine Expo, now firmly entrenched as an iconic marine industry annual event, is without doubt the clubs major fundraiser. The club took up the challenge and assisted with the on ground logistics of car parking duties, staffing main entry points, site marshalling, driving courtesy vehicles for visitors during the three-day event. The Expo is the perfect platform for Rotary to engage with a broad community. The media exposure that the club receives certainly cements a better understanding about the good work that Rotary does in both home and overseas projects. The Coomera River club mustered around 100 volunteers for Expo, not just the members, but from both Interact Clubs and even their Earlyact club. Together with friends and family, the Rotary Club received a wonderful monetary donation from the Expo association, which is utilised to assist with providing much needed

help with local and international community projects. The Rotary Club of Coomera River uses some of these funds to provide annual Christmas Food Vouchers to distressed families in the Coomera area. The vouchers are distributed, along with food hampers at The Upper Coomera Community Centre. The International projects include improving the health and education of children in East Timor and Myanmar. In January of this year, the club successfully delivered to Timor Leste a 20 foot shipping container packed to the brim with medical and educational equipment. From its arrival into Dili the supplies were distributed by members of the Dili Rotary Club and The Dominican Sisters Boy’s Orphanage.

A 250 tonne capacity straddle carrier ASCOM brand, similar to the build Gold Coast City Marina will be receiving in January 2015

GOLD COAST CITY MARINA ‘LIFTS ITS CAPABILITIES’ Gold Coast City Marina has announced its latest acquisition with the purchase of two Ascom branded shipyard equipment machines. A 250 tonne capacity straddle carrier and a 45 tonne hydraulic trailer unit have been ordered from the Italian based manufacturers. Due to increased demand to have works carried out at the GCCM facility from the larger boat segment, particularly in the Superyacht sector, owners Patrick and Trenton Gay have made a decision to invest in expansion and long-term sustainability of the site. The owners are committed to supporting the many reputable

and skilled trades that are based at the site. This investment with Ascom equates to approximately $1.3 mil (AUD). The timing of this investment coincides with the recent news from Government, confirming the commencement of a maintenance dredging program throughout the Gold Coast Waterways region. The Ascom equipment has been selected above other makes, due to its state of the art capabilities. High-quality design, advanced hydraulic lifting ability, plus both machines can be controlled remotly. GCCM General Manager Steve Sammes explains “Now the lift

operators will be able to work closely alongside every vessel throughout the entire lift operation, this allows for precision lifting and sling placement, plus an excellent clear view for manoeuvring vessels safely throughout the site.” Sammes further commented about the new remote controlled Ascom hydraulic trailer. “This unique piece of equipment will allow us to maximise the shipyards footprint area, particularly for vessels seeking long term secure hardstand storage,” he said. Roberto Schedoni, the General Manager of Ascom in Italy is delighted with the sale to GCCM, He stated “Ascom is thrilled to have the new equipment ordered by the Gold Coast City Marina. To the great crew at GCCM, As you may recall, our vessel Suite 2, a 52 foot 30 ton Lagoon sailing catamaran arrived last month at GCCM to be lifted for a prop hub change on the way north from Sydney. The arrangements we made in advance through Kym was easy flexible and accommodating. As it is a boat, the hub change tuned into a discovery of bent shaft and eventually landed up having a sail drive leg replaced for its silky smooth fix. So despite all this starting on an extremely busy Oct 2014 boat show day with a lot of hard stand room taken up etc, at my end the whole operation and change of planned arrangements at the last minute happened seamlessly. What impressed me so much was the time and meticulous care taken in the expert ship lifting process with Micah and crew. Throughout the whole unplanned week we spent on the hard Anne and I felt looked after personally by office and other staff in ways that included driving us to our rental car at Southport and asking us about any needs, receiving mail, etc.

We took advantage of the time and convenience provided by the many businesses associated with the Marina in the excellent quality stainless steel fabrication, upholstery and electronics and painting areas. At the end of our hard stand a couple of days grace on a marina finger allowed Anne and I to wait for weather without rush to continue the journey north So in an industry that often finds it tough to meet high expectations and please customers, the attitude, people, service and facilities at GCCM simply shined, leaving Anne and I and Suite 2 with a feeling of gratitude. Our recommendation comes without hesitation. Kind regards Michael and Anne

SUPERYACHT SPECIALISTS ENSURE INDUSTRY IS IN GOOD HANDS by Daniel McKenzie

Marine Engineering Consultants is a diverse family business that is proudly owned and operated by founder Murray Owen, who has over 30 years’ experience in the Marine Industry. Established in 1992 and operating out of its Gold Coast City Marina headquarters since 2001, the company is a super yacht specialist and offers a full range of marine services. The company continues to grow and expand on its base of satisfied clients, but to gauge how the company got to the point it is at now, one would have to look back to MEC’s early days at the marina where the ability to diversify set the company up for long term. “We were mainly doing refits on super yachts, vessel maintenance, extensions, repairs and a bit of boat building, which kept us going for a long time,” Murray said.

18

“In the lead up to the Global Financial Crisis I diversified into building luxury catamarans of our own design and when the GFC hit, I diversified again into the commercial refit service sector as

While the company’s builds vary, there is a set method to their builds, and Murray said “it’s a task they carry out from the ground up in collaboration with each super yacht owner respectively.” “Firstly you have got to come up with a concept,” Murray said. “Once an owner is happy with the concept you go to the design stage and then from there you move into the build process.” To complete a build is a lengthy process that will vary depending on the type of build.

“A super yacht can take up to three years to build depending on the size of it,” Murray said. “Whereas commercial vessels that we do probably vary from eight months to twelve months.” Not including external contractors, MEC utilises up to 60 workers on their builds at any one time, and the facilities available at the Gold Coast City Marina are a necessity for their work. MEC’s contribution to the super yacht industry is crucial to its presence on the Gold Coast, and Murray is a committee member of Superyacht Australia and sits on the board of AIMEX as the Australian Superyacht Representative. With his vast knowledge and expertise, Murray said what the Gold Coast offers via its waterways and location makes it the state’s best location “The Gold Coast is Australia’s best destination for super yacht’s,” Murray said. “There is no hindrance in getting

in and out of Marina Mirage and Southport Yacht Club and the majority and most crews would much rather spend their time down at Marina Mirage and on the Gold Coast than in the Brisbane River.” While MEC has completed many builds and has carried out extensive work on vessels over the years, no build is ever the same. Murray said each one is a new experience, and he is constantly gaining a different perspective from each build that MEC carries out. “Every vessel is different; they’ve all got different experiences, and you learn something new from everything.”

Steel Steam Ships in “Bristol Fashion”

by Steve Sammes CMM A couple of months back I ventured across to England to attend the Yacht Harbours Association, Marina Managers Conference in Bristol, South West England. The trip to Bristol served a second purpose, that being to see a magnificent vessel that has been restored and preserved at the Brunel Institute Dockyard. The SS Great Britain, a 98 metre steel ship was designed and built by the visionary engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, ably assisted by an expert team of engineers, shipbuilders and professional seamen. The SS Great Britain was built at the Bristol dry dock for the Great Western Steamship Company. The Directors decided they needed a purpose built dry dock where they could have the new liner constructed. It was Brunel who persuaded them

to take up his idea of building steamships that could cross the Atlantic to America. On 18th July 1843, after four years in construction, Prince Albert launched the ship in front of thousands of well-wishers. Not known by many people, it took another 18 months to get her out of the Bristol Harbour, due to the fact that Brunel had made the ship too wide to get through the lock gates. The locks had to be modified and the gates removed at high tide to enable the SS Great Britain to slip through. So, following this embarrassing setback, the ship began her amazing voyages across the globe. The SS Great Britain sailed around the world 32 times, that is more than 1,000,000 miles at sea. During the years of 1852 – 1875 she served as the emigrant steam

food and water had to be on board when she left port. There were different storerooms for dry or tinned goods, vegetables, cooked meat and cheese. An ice house On 21st August 1852, 630 people kept meat fresh after the ship left waved goodbye to their friends and families as the SS Great Britain port for several days. When the supplies ran out, there set sail to Australia for the first time. Today, hundreds of thousands of Australians are descended from emigrants who arrived in Australia on board the ship which she was sold and converted to sail and served as a windjammer cargo ship running from England across to San Francisco. In 1933 the ship’s working life ends and the SS Great Britain found herself being scuttled at Sparrows Cove in the Falkland Islands. There she sat for many years until 1969, when plans were made to salvage the ship and bring her back to England for restoration.

On 19th July 1970, the SS Great Britain returned home to Bristol. I can remember the media news heralding the arrival of this iconic vessel into the Bristol harbour. The restoration project began and was supported by thousands of people who made donations to the heritage trust to assist with the massive expensive exercise of restoring and removing the corrosion attacking the huge steel hull.

2 In 1970, Great Britain was returned to the Bristol dry dock where she was built. Now listed as part of the National Historic Fleet, she is an award-winning visitor attraction and museum ship in Bristol Harbour, with 150,000–170,000 visitors annually.

Included amidst the many financial supporters of the restoration is my family, so to me, this was more than just a visit to see the finished project on show. She rests in full glory at the dry dock where she was built, a tribute to the fine shipbuilding expertise from the industrial revolution years. If ever travelling across to England, I would thoroughly recommend a trip to the wonderful city of Bristol, it is steeped in history

and the SS Great Britain is at the epicentre of its dockyard shipbuilding hub.

Classic lines and contemporary styling classify Clipper Motor Yachts as the number one selling semi-displacement motor yacht brand in Australia. After two years on the drawing board, it isn’t surprising Managing Director, Brett Thurley, applied the same principals when designing the brand’s latest range of maritime marvels. Alongside a team of boat builders and quality control engineers Brett developed a range of beautiful cruisers that encompass the traditions of the Lobster Boat combined with modern design appointment, engineering and practicality. Befitting this style of vessel, the Hudson Bay 39 is crafted in a custom shipyard in Turkey ensuring a finish of the highest hand-built quality. Invoking a traditional exterior profile with European flair and internally contemporary décor with classic hand-crafted Aniegre wood cabinetry and trim. Their flagship model, the Hudson Bay 39, holds the style of tomorrow and the elegance of yesteryear boasting a flared hull and tumblehome transom in the Newport, Rhode Island tradition. From bow to stern it’s obvious the 39 was designed for the buyer who wants something with a little more class and individuality over the production sports cruiser. Her flowing sheer line fuses with her friendly demeanour: combining a sizeable foredeck, deep companionways with high stainless rails, a large teak lined rear platform and rear entry that allows easy boarding, and a comfortable accommodating and entertaining layout. Taking to the bow via timber trimmed recessed walkways the element of refinement is evident. The oval stainless steel hawser pipes feed mooring ropes through to large bollards both port and starboard and the comfort of the detachable sun bed is sure to seduce any bathing beauty. Boarding the beautiful rear platform with teak decking the

design expertise is apparent. The neat seat on the stern side mounted grab rails and swim ladder are convenient for swim or dive preparations. Coming into the cockpit through the hinged rear door is a thickly upholstered ‘L’ shape lounge running across the transom and continuing up the starboard side framing a detachable swivelling teak table. Every inch of space is well utilised with storage under all the seating areas. Upholstery both inside and out is premium Silvertex (exterior) or Ultra Leather (internal) with terrific appeal and hard wearing capability making for easy cleaning with marine applications. Functionally fitted with a worldfirst design feature - an overhead rain shower rose with hot/cold mixer under the sedan roof offering a true outdoor shower experience. Ideal after a swim in the morning or freshening up before dinner it flows straight onto the teak flooring and out through the deck drains. Adding to the alfresco entertaining area is an electric barbecue with fridge drawer beneath and extendable cockpit awning on a sliding stainless frame provides additional shade as required. Entering the light and airy saloon through the stainless steel framed, tinted glass sliding rear doors your attention is immediately drawn to the sliding sunroof and LED drop lighting both creating an open yet intimate atmosphere. The textures of the Ultra-Leather upholstery, Aniegre and Holly timber cabinetry trims and flooring blend beautifully with the fibreglass mouldings and Corian bench tops. To the port side there’s a fulllength lounge with a removable timber table. The table folds lengthwise allowing for a large dining area when entertaining indoors. To the starboard is the galley/ storage area with stainless steel sink with stylish mixer. The twin burner electric stove comes with a Corian infill for a flat bench when not in use and is ideal for

NEW GENERATION VESSEL FOR FANTASEA ADVENTURE CRUISING

Riverside Marine is proud to announce the launch of its new 24m high-speed aluminium catamaran, Fantasea 8 Seasons. The vessel was built in one of two Riverside Marine super yacht workshops in the Gold Coast City Marina (GCCM) precinct where it will now join the award-winning Marine Tour Operator Fantasea Adventure Cruising’s fleet of vessels on Sydney Harbour. Fantasea 8 Seasons’ design was completed as a collaboration between One2Three Naval Architects and Riverside Marine’s in-house naval architects. The majority of manpower used to complete this build came from businesses within the Gold Coast City Marina precinct with construction by Marine Engineering Consultants and painting by Riverside Marine Services. Fantasea Adventure Cruising commissioned the build of the vessel to further expand its fast growing tourism and charter business.

The majority of manpower used to complete this build came from businesses within the Gold Coast City Marina precinct

The vessel is the first of a new generation design by parent company Riverside Marine and purpose-built for Sydney Harbour providing limitless configuration options for weddings, corporate functions, networking events and tours. In order to enhance the guest experience the innovation of an electronically retractable targa roof is a feature of this new vessel. The roof opens up to the Sydney Harbour skyline allowing guests to take in 360-degree sights of the stars, fireworks, icons such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge or Sydney’s daily sunshine. Fantasea 8 Seasons is powered by 2 x 6 cylinder 600hp Yanmar diesel engines and ZF gearboxes. The vessel’s below water line is coated using a four layer silicone system while the internal of the hulls are coated with a white anti-corrosive paint to increase the longevity of the hull internals. With a 1C survey, the vessel can comfortably carry 195 passengers both within the harbour and along the NSW coastline. The vessel sea-trialled extremely well and the delivery journey showcased the vessel’s strong

sea-handling abilities. Each year the vessel will return to the GCCM precinct where the Riverside Marine Services team will perform a “Pit Stop”. The “Pit Stop” is a short-timed, high-intensity slipping with the ultimate aim of enhancing the vessel’s efficiency and reliability for the coming 12 months. As such, routine items include: anode replacement, below waterline cleaning/repairs/ recoating, propellers pitch checks, shaft and rudder bearing checks/replacement and engine alignment checks are performed. Riverside Marine Services also uses the “Pit Stop” as an opportunity to gain useful data on what products are performing well and make improvements using up-to-date practices and new technology.

On the 27th of March 2014 GCCM lifted the vessel ‘Flying Fish’ formally owned by renowned stockbroker Rene Rifkin. The vessel owner selectively chose GCCM as it’s destination for annual service because of a few key points, namely convenience, accessibility to quality trades, services and fabrication, positive previous service history with GCCM, overall customer service and cost. The fact that a 111’ vessel covers fuel bills, wages and the general running costs of a small ship and still be more cost effective is a credit to the GCCM’s focus on efficiency.

Mr Markey had some concerns at the general capability of the competitors to turn the job around in a short period of time. This is achieved at GCCM by having multiple tenants that are capable of high-end specialist works. Engineering, electrical and hydraulics were Gavin’s immediate needs. Efficiency in the lifting equipment: GCCM is purpose built to service both the White Boat and Commercial market. The tight records and docking plans kept on every vessel means that lifting and setting a super yacht like ‘Flying Fish’ can be carried out in less than two hours. This is just not achievable using slipway or platform lifts with transfer trailers. Having over 60 qualified commercial marine tenants calling GCCM home base is the real luxury any boat owner, Captain or Manager has at GCCM. Real time options that give the consumer leverage in negotiating and the option in the event of dispute. End result a happy Captain with a technical job finished on time, and from the owner’s perspective on-budget with minimal disruption. Located conveniently on the way to and from the Whitsunday’s, vessel owners need to seriously consider Gold Coast City Marina as their Refit / Repair facility no matter where their home port is. The cost benefit cannot be ignored!

NEW LEASE OF LIFE FOR A TREASURE OF THE SEA

www.gccm.com.au

37

1

The rebuild process begins as this worn down boat becomes a treasure of the sea once again.

2

During the body restoration process in Troy Dibben’s Factory.

Clinker boats are an old treasure of the sea and are embedded in the history of boating. Traditionally used in harbours and waters, for example, in areas like Sydney, for activities such as bay fishing, they are from a bygone era and outdate most boats with their history going as far back as fourth century Europe. The clinker derives its name from the method used to build and craft these wonderful vessels. In expert clinker assembly the planks of the hull overlap one another to create the hull referred to as a ‘landing’. The unique hull assembly is in contrast to other more traditional building techniques such as the butting up method used in carvel building. The clinker method has stood the test of time and was used by the Vikings and the seventh century Chinese to construct their vessels.

38

www.gccm.com.au

The clinker has enjoyed a rich and varied history in whatever water based activity they have been used for and they are entrenched as a reference point in marine folklore and the annals of boating history. It’s this very history though that has led to these beautifully crafted vessels showing the scars of time. Many clinker vessels have deteriorated from their former glory and in many cases are in desperate need of restoration. The Gold Coast City Marina has the facilities and expertise on site to recapture the wonder and elegance of the clinker. Troy Dibben, located at the Marina has utilised his expertise and the wonderful facilities at his disposal to build and restore these historical gems of the sea. His most recent rebuild, that of

a 1930’s clinker that made its way up to the Gold Coast from Sydney after its owner purchased it in 2011 is a wonderful example of what can be done to restore these historic boats by combining their traditional look with modern technology and appeal. When looking at the beautifully crafted clinker now though, it is hard to believe it is the same vessel that came to the Gold Coast City Marina 11 months ago. Showing all the signs of a long history, it was a shell of its former self and required a complete rebuild from the ground up. “It was rough and rugged and in dire need of repair,” Troy said. After assessing the clinker fully, Troy was given complete creative control over the design and restoration of the worn vessel and he devised a plan to rebuild it

to its former glory. After he had pitched the plan to the client, he received the go ahead and started the lengthy rebuild from scratch. “I started off with a bare timber hull, had it sand blasted and moved forward from there,” he said. After the initial sandblasting and sanding, Troy structured the build of the hull in a way that modernised the vessel as to reach its full potential with modern technology while retaining its classic look. All the internals were built with composite materials and the hull was high build epoxy sheathed. With the project starting to take shape, the clinker was then filled

We glassed over it and fared it up that way to keep the classic look while making it a modern day, maintenance free, composite built boat

This was done to ensure there are no leaks getting to the hull, it is no longer relying on the timber to swell and seal the gaps like the clinker style of boat was originally made to do. The hull was restored using Queensland maple with spotted gum ribbing for its traditional clinker build. Also incorporated was teak for the bright work and light weight balsa core panelling that was filled and fared with epoxys and sprayed with two-pack polyurethane.

fared it up that way to keep the classic look while making it a modern day, maintenance free, composite built boat,” he said. With its beautifully crafted and restored hull now complete, focus shifted to the new deck. With a complete overhaul of the existing deck, the clinker’s new and custom designed appearance began to take shape. “The deck was completely rebuilt with new deck beams, new Sampson posts, breast hooks and a new deck shelf was installed” Troy said.

“All new floor stringers and bearers were put through the Troy said the style used was done decking and the engine mounting to not only preserve the history of systems were completely redone. a clinker design, but to enhance it We then put a new plywood with a modern feel. deck on top with proxy sheaths “We glassed over the hull and and combings, then added fancy www.gccm.com.au

teak work around the back (of the clinker), new duckboard and continued building from there.” The result was a master crafted, aesthetically pleasing new appearance. The back end teak work, combined with more camber in its new decking gives the clinker that traditional look paying homage to its tradition, but with more character and style that was desired for modernisation. With the hull and deck ready to go, the next step was the engine. The previous Simplex engine was replaced by a new Yanmar, three cylinder, 20 horse power diesel engine that provides the Clinker with more grunt and a further

40

www.gccm.com.au

modern touch. After installing the engine Troy found that the positioning of the existing mount wasn’t allowing the clinker to drive correctly and tests were done to rectify the problem. Via testing, it was discovered that the engine was sitting too far out of the water which led to cavitation and the engine not reaching its full maximum by doing what it should. The best course of action was to reposition the mount as the engine was too far forward and it wasn’t riding right so it needed to be repositioned further aft for the best results. The engine was moved aft by about two and a half metres

which allowed it to sit perfectly in the water. The repositioning was a master stroke and allowed the clinker to reach up to eight knots through the water as opposed to its previous five. The finished product is a touch of class and will look amazing as it makes its way through the Gold Coast waterways. Its sleek new hull, excellently crafted decking and powerful new engine has given it a new lease of life and is sure to turn heads. It should fill clinker owners with confidence that there is an option to have their treasure of the sea repaired or rebuilt right here on the Gold Coast to return it to its wondrous best.

While this particular build was top end there are a range of options for rebuild or restoration based on the work required and individual tastes and can all be conveniently done in the Gold Coast City Marina Precinct.

NAUTICAL WASTE SOLUTIONS MERGES WITH ALL MARINE SOLUTIONS All Marine Solutions(AMS) is pleased to advise of its merger with Nautical Waste Solutions(NWS). NWS manufactures a range of Marine Sewage Treatment Systems(MSTS). It has over 16 years of experience in designing and manufacturing of MSTS. Its products range from systems to suit small private vessels through to systems to suit large commercial passenger catamarans and ferries. NWS is the first manufacturer of MSTS to release products that are tested and certified by the Scientific Services Division of Queensland Health meeting the Queensland Government’s requirement for MSTS. This merger is a strategic fit that brings together the extensive MSTS product design and manufacturing competencies

available from NWS and the refined systems installation, maintenance and support competencies provided by AMS. AMS will progressively take on the role of designing, manufacturing, installing, servicing and marketing of the MSTS range of products. Existing NWS staff will provide support to AMS to assist with on-going product design, systems development and issue resolution. Some Key Features are Affordability As AMS moves to become the manufacturer of the MSTS products, the distribution channel to market is simplified and the product becomes more economical. Communication The convenience of a single reliable point of contact through AMS reception/help desk is

always available. Expertise Bringing together the design and manufacturing expertise and installation, maintenance and support competencies of the two companies will ensure product reliability is maximised and cost of ownership is minimised. Service and Sailability Gold Coast. Peter Dyer from RIB Force said there was phenomenal interest in the powered snorkeling and diving propulsion unit, the Sea-Doo SeaScooter. “One nice gentleman came in and bought three,” he said. “He’s in for a great summer,” he added. “Expo was a great chance for us to reinforce to a huge number of people that we don’t just sell tenders and motors, we sell a lifestyle and enjoyment of boating. The fact is most people spend 97 per cent of their time at anchor so our focus is on making that time as enjoyable as we can.” “We had terrific interest from the public because the SeaScooter is so affordable and that “Finding Nemo” underwater experience is now within everyone’s reach, but even more encouraging is the fact we are now talking to boat syndication companies about putting the SeaScooter on their

fleets.” Greg Hill from Cape Marine reported strong international interest in his tough custom-built shallow draft Semac vessels, with approaches from pearl farmers in Tahiti, oil and gas companies in Burma and even mining and security companies from Papua New Guinea. “I’m genuinely impressed,” he said. “I’ve reached ‘general arrangements’ to sell five of

these boats, some of which will be flown in to remote regions by helicopter,” he said. “I’m probably the only commercial boat exhibitor from 599 boat displays here at Expo and I had a fantastic result for my first time as an exhibitor.” “I’ve also really enjoyed the opportunity to network with my suppliers – it’s far better than talking with them over the phone

and they’ve been able to share product information with me that will really help my customers to customise their boats.” Iconic Australian boat-builder Riviera confirmed the sale of two boats – a 5000 Sport Yacht to be delivered by Christmas and a 50 Enclosed Flybridge … and we have several sea trials booked this week for the new 6000 Sport Yacht, which made her Queensland premiere at the Expo. “We’ve already had seven forward orders for the 6000 Sport Yacht which made her world premiere only two months ago,” said Riviera’s Stephen Milne. “She makes her United States premiere at Fort Lauderdale in two weeks and we are confident the 6000 will be just as popular there.” “The fact is that luxury yacht owners do a lot of research before they purchase so Expo is a great opportunity for us to showcase our range of beautiful yachts to genuine buyers, the general public and also the families of our passionate 430 master craftsmen and team members.”

Jeff McNiven from JSW Powersports said it would take several weeks to establish just how successful his Expo display had been, but there were over 15 new Sea-Doo personal water craft owners after the Expo. “I have to sit down with my team tomorrow to get the final numbers but we also have a boat display and it will take us a couple of weeks to get through the sea trials and for our customers to sign on the bottom line,” he said. “We’ve got a busy few weeks ahead of us but it’s been well worth it and we will certainly be back next year.” Keith Hanson from Whitehaven Motor Yachts also vowed to return next year after strong interest in his world-release 6000 Flybridge. “Expo is where we came to exhibit and we selected it because of its growing success. We have some sea trials lined up so I’m really happy overall … there’s been a lot of interest,” he said.

Stuart Smith from United Motor Yachts at Hope Island said he was very happy to have sold a Fairway 37 Flybridge at Expo, and encouraged to be talking to existing faithful owners who are now back in the market for a new boat. “Some of our prospects have been quiet for a few years and now they are back, so that’s very encouraging,” he said. “We have several sea trials of our new Fairway 43 this week and I’m very confident she will be snapped up as a result of us showing here at Expo.” Rex Scott from VMR Southport said “the Expo was a terrific opportunity to raise funds, and also encourage new volunteers to join”. “Membership is a big thing for us too because we rely so heavily on fund-raising and volunteers,” he said. “We do it for the love of it – we haven’t had a pay rise in years!” Jason Lee from Noble Boats International said his range of inflatable stand-up paddleboards were a huge hit with visitors, who loved the idea of being able to go from backpack to beach within minutes. “We have some strong leads and we expect to sell quite a few more after the Expo,” he said. “The media exposure we got certainly helped – we’ve had enquiries from right across Australia.” John Moyle from Jet Ski World, which premiered the fastest production Jet Ski ever built at Expo, the Kawasaki 310R, said he had sold several jet skis to people who had inspected the new release and came back to inspect it again before deciding to buy. “I guess we will know exactly how well we went next week – a lot of people will see the jet ski here and then go home and think about it, talk it over and then come into the shop to buy it.” Brett Flanagan from Integrity Motor Yachts – which, at the Expo, had its biggest ever display – said there was strong interest in the 320 Express, which made

her world premiere at this year’s event. “We have sea trials of our 320 Express and our 380 Flybridge lined up and we sold a 340 Sedan,” he said. “I’m really happy – our customers are baby boomers who like to make well-considered decisions and I feel we have had many genuine prospects come out of this year’s event.” And that’s just a sample of the positive feedback from exhibitors. Huge crowds gathered around the McDonald’s Extreme High Diving Show, which saw former world champion Steve Black perform his triple somersault from the dizzying height of 25 metres, and also each time the Jetovator and Hoverboard took to the water. Bart Beek’s celebrity chef cooking demonstrations were also very popular at the Club Marine stand, while the gourmet food court was packed with people enjoying all the fine fare and live entertainment the event had to offer. The Waterlife Restaurant and Riviera Yacht Club were also well-patronised, and the Yamaha Super Tank fishing demonstrations drew crowds of avid angler. As for the factory tours, demand was so strong for the Riviera factory tours that two mini-buses were hired.

The Riviera Express train ride, with a total of almost 1800 people taking the fully narrated tour of the largest luxury yachtbuilding facility in the Southern Hemisphere, boosted the proceeds being donated to the Expo’s main beneficiary charities. The tours of aluminium boatbuilder Quintrex on Friday and Saturday, and of TAFE’s Gold Coast Marine Training Centre also proved very popular throughout the Expo, with scores taking the opportunity to learn how a Quintrex is crafted, and how TAFE is supporting the next generation of boat-builders. Dates for the 2015 Gold Coast International Marine Expo will be announced shortly.

UNDER 21 World Sailing Championships the start of a boyhood dream by Daniel McKenzie

48

www.gccm.com.au

Gold Coast locals Joel Turner and Lewis Blake were this year crowned sailings Under 21 World Championships at the 2014 SEIKO Junior World Champions’ in the Olympic 49er class. In a challenging week throughout Denmark due to strong winds and difficult racing conditions, the pair held off crews from all over the world to be crowned the best juniors in the World. Joel said the experience was amazing and the event allowed them to test their skill against the best juniors around their age. “The 49er Junior World Championships is an exciting event to attend because all the sailors competing are under 24,” he said.

“There are some extremely talented young sailors to compete against and we get a break from racing against the older, more experienced sailors.” Reaching the top of junior sailing has been a long journey and many years were spent on the Gold Coast learning their craft that would one day take them to the top of sailings junior ranks. For Joel, the dream started at six when his father, an experienced sailor with a wealth of experience, took his son out onto the water to learn the basics. He said that while his dad was teaching him all that he knew, he never imagined that it would lead to a flourishing career. “My Dad has sailed all types of

is there nearly every day, training, coaching or soaking up the atmosphere that the club offers. He said when he joined the club in 2007 the planets aligned for his sailing career. An introduction to Club manager and world renowned sailing coach Shane Smith proved the start of a partnership that would lead him to this point. “The very best thing that happened to me was being “I was 12 when I decided to start introduced to Shane Smith,” he competing in sailing,” he said. “Once I found out about racing, all said. “When I began to sail, Shane saw I wanted was to be in control of talent in me and I saw through my own boat and beat the other him an opportunity to develop people I was racing against.” myself. Joel joined the Southport “Shane continued to coach me Yacht Club in 2007 and the through a wide range of different club provided him with expert boats and racing disciplines.” coaching and development. The club is like a second home to him Although the Southport Yacht Club and Shane allowed Joel to and when on the Gold Coast, he boats and he wanted to pass his knowledge on to me, but I don’t think he realised it would turn it into a career when he first showed me the ropes,” he said. “I cannot thank him enough for the opportunity he has given me.” Joel had fun sailing on the pristine waters of the Gold Coast, but the turning point came six years later when he found out about racing.

learn and develop, Joel said that it wouldn’t be possible to be where he is today without the excellent racing programmes, facilities and wonderful locations available on the Gold Coast. “The Gold Coast has spectacular sailing areas for boat handling, speed and racing,” he said. The Broadwater and the Pacific Ocean provide sailors with very technical sailing conditions where we can develop our skills. “I absolutely love the Gold Coast and Southport Yacht Club and I plan to never leave.” The future looks bright for the pair who recently competed in the Open Age World Championships. They are currently planning their competition schedule for the Australian summer that will lead into autumn racing in Europe. Joel said that while the schedule

is gruelling, he is thankful and proud of the opportunity he has and is hell bent on making it count. “I plan to make a living out of sailing for the future,” he said. “There are very few people who do get the opportunity to live off sailing but I am extremely dedicated and driven to have great success in this sport. “I love this sport and will work extremely hard to continue improving and making my way to the top.”

Reflections on Value Having your boat resprayed is a significant investment, regardless of the size of the vessel concerned. Accordingly, you should expect to receive a durable ‘product’ that in appearance terms keeps on returning ‘dividends’ for many years. In relation to the ‘smaller’ pleasure craft (< 24m LOA) market, purchasing a refinish has historically been a matter of considering the price and the brand of paint. It has essentially been regarded as a ‘commodity’ purchasing decision with typically little thought given to throughlife return on investment. There are a number of additional factors that can and should be considered in order to maximise your ROI.

Does your painting contractor keep proper application records indicating the quantity of paint that is put on? The dry film thickness of the topcoat, no matter what brand, is key to its longevity. Do those records demonstrate that the prevailing climatic conditions at time of application was within the parameters specified by the coating manufacturer? This is vital to the paint remaining firmly adherent to your boat. You would be well-advised to request a copy of these records in connection with any warranty claim. Does you painter provide a comprehensive warranty on both the workmanship and materials comprising his ‘product’?

Does the contractor specify any ‘appearance standard’ to be achieved on completion; one that can preferably be verified digitally as well as visually? Is the finish capable of localised repair in the event of damage. Does the contractor provide you, on completion, a quantity of ‘touch up’ paint from the original batch of colour, so that future damage repairs can be readily matched? Does your contractor provide an after sales repair and maintenance program? These are just some few of the factors involved in maximising the value and good looking life expectancy of your costly refinish.

RIVIERA EXPORTS AUSTRALIAN CRAFTSMANSHIP TO MORE THAN 60 COUNTRIES 1

Riviera 515 SUV Riviera has sold up to hull number 12 in the 515 model in the three months since her world premiere at the Riviera Festival of Boating in May. The company looks forward to her US premiere.

Riviera’s rich 34-year heritage and award-winning luxury boats have cemented the Gold Coast company’s international reputation for quality, style, innovation and sea-keeping ability. As a highly respected force in the global marine industry, Riviera has forged alliances with many of the world’s biggest names in boating and has consistently invested heavily in new model development to produce a range of world-class luxury powerboats. Riviera’s chairman and owner Rodney Longhurst, is committed to Australia’s manufacturing future and, since purchasing the company’s 14-hectare state-ofthe-art Coomera facility right next door to the Gold Coast City Marina in May 2013, he has expanded the 400-strong team. In fact, Riviera is currently in search of more master craftsmen to join the team.

Earlier this year, Riviera joined forces with the Gold Coast Institute of TAFE (GCIT) to help train the next generation of Australian boat builders, craftsmen and women with the re-opening of the GCIT Marine Training Centre, a training hub for more than 100 apprentices located within Riviera’s headquarters in Coomera. “Riviera’s Australian headquarters is amongst the greatest boat building facilities in the world and is the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. This adds real strength to our brand as Australia is very much a part of the Riviera DNA. This means that Riviera boats are built for Australia’s often harsh and challenging boating conditions, and they are built with great strength to take on whatever the elements try to deliver. Riviera is built to go to sea … and built to last,” Mr Longhurst said.

CLIPPER MOTOR YACHTS NEW ANCHORAGE AT GCCM Australia’s number one selling semi-displacement motor yacht brand, Clipper Motor Yachts is excited to announce its new position as the anchor boat sales tenant within Gold Coast City Marina (GCCM). In line with the GCCM and Clipper’s growth plans, the entire waterfront sales arm has increased and is solely dedicated to new and pre-loved vessels. Gold Coast City Marina’s General Manager, Steve Sammes stated “We are thrilled to have the Clipper brand firmly represented within the facility, with their expansion into a prime boat sales position and the newly tastefully renovated display office area and marina, we are looking forward to a long and pro-active working relationship. Our congratulations to Brett, Glenn and the sales team.” Located within the administration building, next to Waterlife restaurant, Clipper is positioned front and centre as the only brokerage on the main waterfront. The existing premises have been renovated into a

56

more refined and relaxed setting with a chic lounge area, coffee machine, beverages and room for customers to relax. They’ve also upgraded the marina arm with new power poles for ease of berthing and pro fender soft edging along all sales and brokerage berths. Being open seven days a week throughout summer, Managing Director, Brett Thurley believes it’s also the perfect spot for customers to visit and have lunch at Waterlife restaurant and view the boats. “Myself and our team could not be happier with the latest move forward as it allows us to stay focused on our ability at GCCM to work with the industry’s best trades and service agents to expedite warranty and commissioning, and after-market upgrades.” Alongside taking on board an additional broker and more listings, another growth opportunity has been added to Clipper’s cap, with recently becoming the exclusive Boat Equity agency in Queensland

- providing its customers with more options to get out on the water. The new system is aligned with Clipper to offer syndicated or part ownership for new and pre-owned vessels. This makes bigger boat ownership available to a wider range of customers but with an ongoing affordability and flexibility in comparison to other managed syndication offerings. Clipper will host the official opening of the new office in conjunction with the Gold Coast Marine Expo, this Friday the 17th of October.

Underwater in the Gold Coast Broadwater, an amazing marine world! by Deb Aston

The Gold Coast Seaway is a popular spot for scuba diving, the only shore dive for South East Queensland and world class for the marine life that can be encountered. Over 450 species of fish have been recorded to date. There is no other dive site that I have encountered in Australia where you will find all of the fisherman’s favourites alongside many coral reef species. ‘What’s it like?’ you ask, well read on and I will take you along for a typical dive underwater in the Broadwater . Tide’s high, scuba gear is ready, don the wetsuit and off we go! Clamber down the rock wall onto the concrete platform, squeezing past the patient fisherman, fins and mask on, buddy check, regulator in mouth and scramble into the water. Aaahh the feeling of weightlessness at last and the sound of blowing bubbles as we slowly submerge. From the moment your face is underwater you are greeted by fish, along the first sandy section is always a school of Sand Whiting together with the Stonefish, who remains totally immobile and I wonder

58

www.gccm.com.au

whether he is actually a concrete statue. Well, we leave the one alone as Stonefish have a nasty set of spines that you don’t want to get up close and personal with. We swim towards the sand pumping pipeline, camera and GoPro ready and settle into a nice profile just off the bottom at around 15m, you look up and the regulars are there to greet us, a school of 500+ Big Eye Trevally swirling around and around. We always pause here for a while just enjoying the huge school of fish. They come close too, you feel you could reach out and touch them. The Big Eye Trevally are joined by Giant Trevally, Long Raker Trevally, Blue Fin Trevally and often Golden Trevally, Flathead, Bream, Yellow Tail Kingies, Emperors, Leatherjackets, Surgeonfish, Luderick ( I could go on - told you there was over 450 species to be found) zooming by. Looking down to the smaller fish life, Bannerfish, Butterfly fishes, Angelfish, Wrasse, Stripies all hiding in and around the pipeline, rocks and tyres As we swim along the pipeline the fish are lining up and waiting

for their turn to be checked out by the cleaner wrasse. These tiny little blue and white fish set up shop along this pipeline and they have the massive job of cleaning parasites and other nasties from the thousands of fish who line up for their services. Often they are helped by other juvenile fish as the task is huge. Some customers are expecting miracles as they present with huge bite marks or trailing fishing lines and tackle. You watch as one fish jumps the queue and starts a battle. Seems the bigger you are the better the service is, or maybe the others are just aware of the food chain of bigger eating smaller.

pylon, this is where the big boys like to hang out, yes you can find Queensland Groper. Also a favourite haunt for the Mulloway and nasty looking Barracuda (all those teeth). Quick check with my buddy, and contents gauge of the air tanks and we decide it is time to turn around and head back to the shoreline. Swimming back through the fish soup and playing with my favourite the Black Spot Tuskfish who will dash up to your face but when I lift the camera they zoom away. Back to the South wall and the submerged water tanks to see what treasures they have inside. Often it is a huge ball of black and white striped catfish, occasionally a Nudibranch or two. Now back into the shallows around 5-8 metres it’s time to swim back to our departure point but one quick stop off at the short pipe

(effluent discharge pipe) and you can see the Luderick are there waiting for it to pump, along with lots of other fish life. Again the cleaner fish are busy in this area and you can see the Surgeonfish go pale in colour. It must make it easier to see the parasites. I love the big fish but this area is my favourite as it’s where all the little critters hang out. In amongst the rocks you often see the big eyes and gaping mouths of the moray eels. The banded coral shrimp join in with the fish cleaning job but they prefer to be able to disappear into the rocks when threatened. It’s then out with the cutter blade and a quick clean up of the pipe, cutting off the fishing line and tackle.

The fish are here but they are smart and swim straight to the pipe and cut off the line, unfortunately sometimes they are trapped and need to be rescued. I can now feel the gentle tug of the outgoing current, air is low, time to drag myself up out of this amazing world and back to reality. Very reluctantly I surface, take off the fins, scramble back up the rocks onto the concrete platform, the weight of the gear hits you again and you stagger back to the car. Then the excited chatter begins “of did you see...”

Light Tackle Masters Tournament by Daniel Mckenzie The annual ‘Light Tackle Masters’ fishing competition is set to entice multiple local and international competitors, when it kicks off early next year. The tournament, which runs for three days, awards winners prizes based on points gained for tagged fish. All fish are caught on a maximum of eight kilogram line. Boats often depart well before daybreak to be on the fishing grounds by 7am, as crews scramble to be the first to tag a fish and radio in to receive their points. Count back for points is always to the first boat to achieve the number required. This creates intensity and excitement as crews jostle for a ladder position. Traditionally in past events, a

substantial number of fish are caught in shallow grounds of around 20-30 metres depth and juvenile Black Marlin are targeted on a strictly tag and release basis unless a World, Australian or State record is achieved. Open to all anglers and boat crews from International Game Fish Association clubs, the event has been running for some 30 years but last year received a new lease of life by moving to the Gold Coast City Marina Complex. The move to the Marina complex has proven to be a masterstroke for the event, and last year’s tournament was labelled a great success. Aside from offering the best possible access for boats and crews, the facilities on offer

made the tournament the best Queensland has seen. Gold Coast Game Fish Clubman Bruce Keown, who oversees the tournament and handles the MC duties, said while the tournament has always been held on the Gold Coast, the Marina’s inaugural hosting of the tournament was a standout and the many aspects

the social aspect that our tournaments are famous for.” Not only was last year’s tournament a raging success while providing a boost to local fishing and tourism, it also recorded the highest number of boats and competitors out of all Queensland held IGFA tournaments. The future of the tournament

GCCM proved to be a standout and all competitors were very happy indeed and facilities available made the tournament an even bigger success. “It has always been Gold Coast based and has been run out of a number of venues over the years but GCCM proved to be a standout and all competitors were very happy indeed,” he said. “The GCCM complex is ideal in many ways and fuel is readily available, plus the marina staff are always on hand to assist. “All boats are able to be together in one spot, which encourages

looks bright at its new location and Bruce sees the event becoming the top tournament in the state. “We hope to see it as the number one tournament on the Queensland circuit,” he said. Slated to be held in January, the event will look to build on its previous success and shall prove to be another great tournament if last year is anything to go by.

Waterfront Restaurant and Bar has a new lease of life By Daniel McKenzie The restaurant and bar at the Gold Coast City Marina has been given a new lease of life as part of a major revamp of the restaurant’s menu and overall look. A big part of this revamp is a tantalising new breakfast range that was carefully selected and implemented after getting a feel for the restaurant’s clientele and their tastes. The result is a menu that is sure to please with its attention to detail and selections from a variety of cuisines. Mouth-watering and affordable meals are prepared fresh and diners can indulge in anything from French toast, fluffy pancakes, omelettes, a range of egg dishes, or simply toast. There is a range of side options and lighter meals available as well as a kids menu; truly something for everyone. In addition to the new breakfast menu, the overhaul to the Waterfront Restaurant and Bar’s overall look will also charm guests. With the restaurant ideally situated, looking over the pristine

Feedback has been positive for the reinvigorated restaurant which overtime should see a range of not only new customers arriving, but also customers who may not have been in since the overhaul was completed. FORT LAUDERDALE INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW 1

Super yachts were parked side to side at the huge event in Ft Lauderdale.

At this year’s Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, Gold Coast City Marina was truly well represented, occupying an exhibitor booth as part of the Superyacht Australia / Australian Marine Export Group contingency within the Australian Marine Pavilion area. The stand area proved to be a major draw card for any show visitors seeking something ‘marine’ from Australia. Supporting the marketing efforts and manning at the stand alongside GCCM representatives were business owners from ‘My Marine’ and ‘Bradford Marine’. Additional financial support was further gained via contributions made by many other GCCM based tenants, along with a Gold Coast City Council Export Development Grant Funding allocation, totalling $9,000. The trip proved to be a great

70

success, with the key objectives of promoting the Gold Coast as a major cruising destination for internationally flagged visiting vessels. The Gold Coast Marine Precinct, with focus upon the Gold Coast City Marina was naturally highlighted as Australia’s marine industry home. The GCCM team outlined the service capabilities of the industry cluster based within its 15 hectare site, including the impending arrival of its new 250 tonne straddle lift, targeting the major long term refit and repair works to the super yacht sector. Industry relationships were strengthened with marine business contacts, in particular, shipping agents, such as Aurora Logistics, Dockwise Yacht Transport, Seven Star and Swire Shipping. These companies handle the transport and freight logistics for overseas vessels venturing into the Asia Pacific Rim.

It was further an opportunity to network with key major international marina chain operatives, such as IGY Marinas, Westrec and MDL. The IGY Marina group operates twelve world class super yacht marinas in nine countries, and spread throughout the US and Caribbean. Meetings were held with their Vice President Kenny Jones, to cement a mutual relationship of collaborative destination marketing. Emphasis was placed on the Gold Coast as being the epicenter for the cruising international super yachts visiting Australia. Gold Coast City Marina also met with staff and members from the US Superyacht Association. Post discussions, the GCCM were invited to become members of the US Association, making this the first facility in Australia to become a member. Through this new network we will open

up new avenues in terms of marketing and brand exposure. CEO Kitty McGowan, to be guest speaker at the San Diego super yacht Conference, June 2015, has offered an invitation to GCCM. The group are keen for us to showcase the history and making of the Marine Precinct at Coomera. From visiting many of the boat sales exhibitors, it was apparent that confidence has returned to the marketplace in the US. Strong sales were reported by many, including Viking Motor Yachts who sold their 90 foot display vessel on day one, plus secured an additional eight orders by the end of the show. The GCCM stand at the show

also received plenty of enquiries regarding the Gold Coast area as a tourist destination, the back drop display panels depicted great imagery provided by Gold Coast Tourism. In addition to the activities carried out throughout the show period, time was further utilised with arranged visits to some of the major marinas and shipyards within the Florida region.
