As an architecture student keen on the subject, I discovered my interest in exploring history, logic and the numerous related fields behind it. Throughout my academic career, I developed my technical and social skills to become modern architect, while I gradually realized that a job like an architect means far more than a designer. You shall first try to become an engineer, archaeologist, historian, sociologist, urban planner, philosopher, and anthropologist. Then you may say the word that I have tried to become an architect. And that is the reason why I would like to take an opportunity on a further academic journey.

A PLACE OF CONVERGENCE RENOVATION FROM AN ABANDONED FACTORY TO A COMPLEX OF KINDERGARTEN, SENIOR HOUSING AND TOURISM CENTRE YOUNG ARCHITECTS COMPETITION, Kids’ Factory Individual work
The former pottery factory of Laveno Mombello slept on the bank of Lake Maggiore, Italy. Established in the spring of 1856, it was once the most important industry in the region and the home of Italian Ceramic Society in the first half of 20th century. However, the ruthless globalization lashed the industry and the golden age fade to a permanent closure in 1997, leaving a poor state of repair to the massive factory building and a stagnancy to the town.
This project was originally a kindergarten design for the Young Architecture Competition, but has undergone an extension in response to the core puzzle. It aims to tackle the issues left by deindustrialization, to relief the area from decline and to create a place for the convergence between the young and the old, the past and the future.

Laveno Mombello is a harbor town in Province of Varese, enjoying the marvelous Alps and Lake Maggiore. It can be easily reached from the main cities in north Italy and Switzerland thanks to ta comprehensive transportation network combined with railway, ferry route and aviation.
The abandoned pottery factory is located next to the old train station, which is also in disuse now. In the last century, the products from the factory used to shipped out by train from the station and cross continents and oceans, reaching other countries in Europe and America. Many local townspeople worked in the factory as well as some trainees from all over the world. With the collapse of the industry in 1990s, the town fell into decline. Furthermore, asbestos, an insulation material frequently-used in 19th century, was found toxic and detected in the building, leading to the prohibition of entry and the following disrepair. Nowadays, most of habitants are the aged former workers, and the younger generation has moved to cities for employment because of the lack of local industry. Some travellers come here for vacation but the undeveloped tourism fell to boom the economy.

A DOWNTURN OF THE LOCAL HISTORY
The problem of deindustrialization lies not only in the caring of the retired workers, but also in the lack of younger generation and a new economic stimulus. In the project, the answer is a reuse of the factory building to introduce children and tourists, which can bring vitality and tourism industry. Therefore, the function of the building is not only one but three - kindergarten, tourism centre and nursing house - for three different aimed users: kids, visitors and the local elderly. Instead of being isolated from each other, the three groups of people can perceive the others without being disturbed. The factory will provide a mini community to enhance communication and interaction, in a sentient but unconscious way.

SENSATIONS
The unconscious interaction is achieved through different sensations and the three groups will ‘feel’ the others before their ‘converge’ in fresh. The elderly can hear that the kids and vistors are entering the complex; inside the same block they will take meals or cafe provided by the same kitchen logistics; on the roof garden, the kids and the elderly will smell the floral from the plants grown by each other; and they will take a glace of the others at the sports zone. When they can finally touch each others in the common garden, they will experience the former function of the factory together.
To design the form and language of the new portion in this renovation, a design methodology using the images of architecture is applied. Elements are extracted from some most famous or familiar scenes for north Italians, and are used as the typology for the design. Arch and portico are classic forms for the entrance of the academic building in Italy; A track placed on the roof has appeared since the well-known Fiat Lingotto Factory in Turin; Linear organization and deep perspective view can be found in Uffizi Gallery in Florence; Long stairways and overpasses criss-cross to conceive a dynamic atmosphere in mountanious city like Perugia; An analogy can be drawn between Aldo Rossi’s colonnade in Gallaratese and a typical portico in Italian city, Bologna for instance; The articulate but logical language from Italian Rationalism has spread in North Italy after the WII, like the residential project by Giuseppe Terragni given here. In design process, the concepts mentioned previously shape and characterize the building step by step, leading to the final result of renovation.

As the last sector of the complex, the “V” shape structure carries the railway which used to connect the factory with the old train station. After renovation, the industrial structure will turn its service from private interest to public goodness. It will contain a public garden, a ceramic workshop with gallery, and a platform of tourists’ arrivals. Here, the kids and the elderly who are local residents, and the visitors who are outsiders, will finally meet each other face to face and take part in activities together.
Beyond the boundary of the complex, the impact of the revival of the former ceramic factory will go further to the surrounding area and to the whole town. The nearby vacant space can be reserved for financial buildings, the parking area in the old train station can serve for travellers by cars. As time goes by, the concentration of tourism circulation and sources can bring agglomeration effects.
Thus, the ‘convergence’ of people can induce ‘convergence’ in finance, urban development and common awareness.

As a post-industrial metropolitan, Turin has witnessed the economic boom in Italy from 1950s to 1970s as well as the decline so far, so as the Gas Light Company of Italy. Area Gasometri is a zone of 44’000 sqm which used to accommodate the company. It is not far from the city centre, the river Dora and the well-known landmark, Mole Antonelliana. Although the new Campus Einaudi of Università degli studi di Torino , which was designed by Foster + Partners, brings a flow of around 10’000 students per year, the area is still in lack of in easy accesses and connections, as well as urban life and vitality.
The project studies the strategies of urban and public space design, and responses to the metropolitan goal of transformation into a tourism and cultural city. It aims to increase accessibility and create a wide range of public space and activities which evoke social and cultural identity, and its different phases will take place according to the development of the neighbourhood and the metropolitan.

The area used to host the headquarters of the Italian gas society Itagas and its two gas holders, but after the dismantling in 1950s, only a few offices in the building keep running today and are isolated with its enclosure wall. Furthermore, its connection to the city centre is cut by the busy traffic on Corso R. Margherita, which also makes troubles to the student commuters between the two campuses. Therefore, the first step to activate the area is to improve its accessibility, with refers to not only the demolition of boundary but also the possibility of multi-activities on the ground. The design of axes aims to indicate the safe and suggested street for pedestrian, as well as to unite this urban blind spot with the other part of the metropolitan area.

MIDDLE RANGE
Accessibility alone does not make a space public. When social interaction is taken as a defining criterion, public spaces have a wide spectrum. The two far ends of it are the ceremonial ones and the quotidian ones, but in these spaces there is a lack of a truly public life. Meanwhile, the spectrum has a wide middle range, which rely on many inconspicuous facilities and infrastructure, such as a consistent street profile, a safe square, street lighting and benches, or even just a pattern on asphalt ground to mark the public area. Because of the industrial crisis since 1980s, the metropolitan government of Turin has stated its new strategy for urban development: the renovation of the historic centre, the redevelopment of old industrial and infrastructural reorganization. As a response, the project in area gasometer tries to enable further potential in long-term development. Under the decline in economy and accelerating unemployment rate, the project will not rely on the government sector but the public one. Therefore, beside the public facilities and infrastructural improvement, the project also suggests a system in which the land for co-working office, social housing and urban forest can transform between each other. It begins with a few official and residential buildings as well as the planting of urban forest. With the forecast completion of metro line 2, the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rediscovery in tourism and cultural sector, and the redevelopment of local economy, the project will be phased to allow expansion of co-working and more immigrants into the area.

To prioritize the pedestrians and cyclists, a number of new installations are introduced and some existing infrastructure is renewed. The pattern which composes of simplest geometries - circles and squares - varies in different zones and uses various materials to be applied on different ground surfaces.

A wide range of public space which activates a European city exists in its neighbourhood parks, playgrounds, green pockects, skateparks, bike lanes, bike parking and even under a shadow projected by the canopy of a tree. CO-HOUSING IN COMO RESIDENTIAL BUILDING DESIGN FOLLOWING THE DISCIPLINE OF ITALIAN RATIONALISM Politecnico di Torino, Architectural Construction Studio Instructor: Pierre Alain Croset, Andrea Bocco Individual work
As the birthplace of Italian Rationalism, Como owns some of the most famous rationlist architectures: Casa Del Fascio, Asilo Sant’Elia, Novocomum, the Headquarters of the Unione Fascista Lavoratori dell’Industria, Casa Cattaneo, and so on. Important rationalist architects like Giuseppe Terragni, Cesare Cattaneo and Pietro Lingeri all have their works here. The city also enjoys the view of the mountain and the lake of Como, which make it a favourable vacation spot for Lombardesi. The design of co-housing is located at a L shape site next to Casa Del Fascio, and is divided into four different volumes — each varies in shape and height — according to the geometry of the urban composition, after which the shape of each dwelling unit reveals itself. The rhythm of the facade is composed of lines and planes in various levels, which articulates the structure behind it. Rather than representing a fragmentary chapter, the design tries to maintain the patterns and traditions of the place, to respect its surroundings and to follow the principle of the rationalism.

Commissioned by the National Fascist Party, Casa del Fascio is the representative work of Giuseppe Terragni. Each of its four facades contains multi-layers and expresses its exterior. The project provides eight duplexes which are comfortable for small families, couples or students. In the living area, space is double- height with a big French window, allowing the introduction of light as well as framing the urban and natural landscapes from the view inside the building. To serve the citizens with public services, the ground floor and the basement host a cafeteria, cultural activity rooms, as well as space for office or study.

In addition, on each top floor of the four volumes, there is a space shared by all the dwellers in the co-housing. There are two common rooms and four terraces altogether, creating the opportunity for social life and neighbourhood contact.
