THE SUITCASE
STEPHANIE HUNT
“CLARISSA”
I think everybody has that suitcase – to some extent. Except for the Yogis and the Budas, who give everything away. When you have experiences, sometimes you end up carrying parts of them around later. The suitcase is the pain. The light is what could be, if the pain was dealt with.

I wasn’t sure whether or not the suitcase was going to end up in the movie. Bob’s never really talked to me very much about it. I like that it’s this ambiguous thing. I don’t have a firm mindset about anything. Even when people tell me, ‘This is made of such-and-such material’, a weird part of me is like, ‘are you sure? Maybe we don’t know yet. Scientists are always finding out things that aren’t true.’

I think the suitcase is light. It’s filled with light and I’m sure whatever that means to different people… I think that’s love. Life is weird and there’s this thing that goes along with you – that is like light. That amazing thing that is just being alive.

Oh god, that’s a very good question. Great question. My answer would be something poetic and considered like complacency… Is what is in that suitcase. My more literal request – and Bob has not said no to this yet – is that after the final credits roll there is a screen that says ‘35 Years Earlier’ and it’s Sal jerking off into the suitcase. So I mean, if I have it my way, it’s Sal’s spunk in the suitcase, or perhaps his homunculus.

THE FILM’S TITLE
KEVIN CORRIGAN
“MEMORIAL MAN”
Maybe it’s an ironic title… Meaning, the person who’s saying that… Talking about God… They believe in God. They believe that God likes them. Or is it just a joke on the idea of God? Kind of a wink, agnostic. That’s what I take away from it. It sounds old hat, you know? Like a twenties expression or 19th century. I’m sure it was a caveman sentiment… It goes back… The whole feeling.

It evokes the notion that one can stumble through life, committing human errors, while some greater power keeps an eye on the store. In regards to our film, it brings to mind the manner by which Max continues to commit the same sort of relationship gaffes, presumably in search of fulfillment and happiness, but failing himself and his partners in a serial string of selfish blunders. It’s also the phrase that Sal hums to himself upon the rare occasion that he is on the receiving end of a round of fellatio.

Yeah… For me, the title is mostly just like a rebuttal to somebody’s criticism. Well, you might not like it… You might not like my band, but somebody once wrote a really good review about us… So…

All these little bits and pieces of life are amazing, but they’re all part of one whole thing. I think the title is suggesting that (being a part of one) whole thing is actually good. It’s not like somebody up there hates you. I do believe that there is something totally unknown and I believe that totally unknown thing is amazing and good… Friendly. I would even go so far as to say loving.

I think it means that even though things may seem like shit, or life can really turn you around, somebody up there may like you… Regardless. Well, actually… It’s hopeful. It’s hinting at the hope. Hopefully, somebody up there likes me.

I mean, I know there’s a Paul Newman movie that has nothing to do with this. There’s a David Bowie song, I think… Yeah… I don’t know if it’s his song or if he just sang it but it’s called that. I know Bob has a lot of Bowie on his computer. What does it mean?
