3 Rumors and theories of both scientific and religious alike claim that doom’s day is imminent, an inconvenient truth in the modern day. The said impending apocalypse had been anticipated for decades, with prophets, scientists and common man alike attempting to put an expiry date to humanity and the world as we know it. What is it about death and the end of the world that interests mankind? From frightful nightmare to a purge of depicted evil, the perceptions are a diverse spectrum. The beginning is the end is the beginning.

The Apocalypse, aliases include Armageddon, Judgment Day, Dooms day and many more. It is a mysterious phenomenon comparable to that of social networking except that it has existed for a far longer period of time. Spread wide in a complex web, the apocalypse has its presence within various religions, cultures and even imprinted itself within historical documentations. Where were its origins? Why was it so efficiently widespread?

4

gone FFFRRIGID Dooms day has became a celebrity in recent time, having earned its own genre in fiction, various media and even religions (cults so to speak) Similar to an actual celebrity, the apocalypse has it’s own legions of fans, ranging from appreciators of its genre to border lining insane worshippers. It also has its fair share of skeptics, haters and critiques. Perhaps the only distinct different between the apocalypse and a celebrityis that the former lacks hounding paparazzi. But what is it in specific?

The apocalypse has been defined as the end of civilization due to an existential catastrophe such as nuclear warfare, pandemic, extraterrestrial attack, impact event, cybernetic revolt, technological singularity, dysgenics, supernatural phenomena, divine judgement climate change, resource depletion or some other general disaster. But like most, the average reader is a mere spectator, which this book serves as a guide to. The phenomenon is a tall order, which shan’t be delayed any further for you.

Jonestown was the informal name for the Peoples Temple Agricultural Project, an intentional community in northwestern Guyana formed by the Peoples Temple led by Jim Jones. It became internationally notorious when, on November 18 1978, 918 people died in the settlement as well as in a nearby airstrip and in Georgetown. A total of 909 Temple members died in Jonestown, all but two from apparent cyanide poisoning, in an event termed "revolutionary suicide" by Jones and some members on an audio tape of the event and in prior discussions. This includes over 200 murdered children. To the extent the actions in Jonestown were viewed as a mass murder, it was the largest such event in modern history and resulted in the largest single loss of American civilian life in a non-natural disaster until the events of September 11, 2001.

In January 1998 Heide Fittkau-Garthe, a German psychologist, and a previously high-profile Brahma Kumaris, were charged in the Canary Islands with a plot of murder-suicide in which 32 group members, including five children, were to ingest poison. After the suicides, they were told they would be picked up by a spaceship and taken to an unspecified destination. Suicide was to take place in the Teide National Park. It seems that the sect had no official name, although it was referred to as "Heide" in honor of its founder. However a more recent article in Tenerife News casts doubt that there was any intention on the part of the group to commit suicide. 12

The Four Horsemen

A notable historical symbol is the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The chapter tells of a "'book'/'scroll' in God's right hand that is sealed with seven seals". The Lamb of God/Lion of Judah (Jesus Christ) opens the first four of the seven seals, which summons forth four beings that ride out on white, red, black, and pale horses. Although some interpretations differ, in most accounts, the four riders are seen as symbolizing Conquest, War, Famine, and Death, respectively. The Christian apocalyptic vision is that the four horsemen are to set a divine apocalypse upon the world as harbingers of the Last Judgment. This interpretation replaces Conquest with Pestilence, and is used as the basis for many uses of the Four Horsemen concept in popular culture.

In Brian Stableford's The A to Z of Fantasy Literature, for example, the Horsemen are listed as Famine, Disease, War, and Death. The origins and justification of the name "Pestilence" as a distinct Horseman are unclear, though some translations of the Bible do mention "plague" or "pestilence" in connection with the Pale horse Vicente Blasco IbĂĄĂąez, in his 1916 novel The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (filmed in 1921 and in 1962), provides an early example of this interpretation, writing "The horseman on the white horse was clad in a showy and barbarous attire. While his horse continued galloping, he was bending his bow in order to spread pestilence abroad. At his back swung the brass quiver filled with poisoned arrows, containing the germs of all diseases."

The Apocalypse;

Much similar to beer, the Apocalypse has been brewed for years upon years by many different countries. With a wide variety of patrons whom enjoy the rumored dooms day event no different from the chilled alcoholic beverage. The one difference is that dooms day fanatics need not consume any beer to be drunk beyond logical comprehension.

Evangelists

Yaum al-Qiyāmah

An Oakland evangelist who famously and incorrectly predicted the end of the world on May 21 has said the “final end of everything” will probably happen on that very Friday. Harold Camping, founder of the nonprofit Christian radio network Family Radio Worldwide, has posted several lengthy statements on his website, explaining why the original date of May 21 was incorrect and predicting that October 21 would most likely be “the final end of everything.”

It is believed to be God's final assessment of humanity as it exists. The sequence of events (according to the most commonly held belief) is the annihilation of all creatures allowable, resurrection of the body, and the judgment of all sentient beings. The exact time when these events are to occur is not specified; however, there are said to be major and minor signs[which are to occur near the time of Qiyamah (end time). "al-Qiyama" is the name of the 75th Sura of the Qur'an, whose subject is the resurrection.

Messiah

2012

Some of Rabbi Schneerson's followers believed he was the Jewish Messiah, the "Moshiach," and have persisted in that belief since his death. The reverence with which he was treated by followers led many Jewish critics from both the Conservative and Reform communities to allege that a cult of personality had grown up around him. But the New York Times said "from both sides, Rabbi Schneerson was attacked for allowing a cult of personality to grow around him."

The 2012 phenomenon comprises a range of eschatological beliefs according to which cataclysmic or transformative events will occur on 21 December 2012. This date is regarded as the end-date of a 5,125-year-long cycle in the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar. Various astronomical alignments and numerological formulae have been proposed as pertaining to this date, though none have been accepted by mainstream scholarship.

Aum Shinrikyo

Heaven’s Gate-Comets

Aum Shinrikyo (currently known as Aleph) is a Japanese cult, listed as a terrorist organization by several countries. The group was founded by Shoko Asahara in 1984. The group gained international notoriety in 1995, when it carried out the Sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway. The name "Aum Shinrikyo" (オウム 真理教 Ōmu Shinrikyō?) derives from the Sanskrit syllable Aum, which represents the universe, followed by Shinrikyo written in kanji, roughly meaning "religion of Truth". In English "Aum Shinrikyo" is usually translated as "Supreme Truth". In January 2000, the organization changed its name to Aleph in reference to the first letter of the Arabic alphabet, Hebrew alphabet and Phoenician alphabets. It changed its logo as well. In 1995, the group claimed they had over 9,000 members in Japan, and as many as 40,000 worldwide. Police consider the existing groups Aleph and Hikari no Wa to be branches of the "dangerous religion".

On March 26, 1997, 39 followers of Heaven's Gate died in a mass suicide in Rancho Santa Fe, California, which borders San Diego to the north. These people believed, according to the teachings of their cult, that through their suicides they were "exiting their human vessels" so that their souls could go on a journey aboard a spaceship they believed to be following comet Hale-Bopp. Some male members of the cult underwent voluntary castration in preparation for the genderless life they believed awaited them after the suicide. In May 1997, two Heaven's Gate members who had not been present for the mass suicide attempted suicide, one completing in the attempt, the other going into coma for two days and then recovering. In February 1998 the survivor, Chuck Humphrey, committed suicide.

Chernobyl A catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine. An explosion and fire released large quantities of radioactive contamination into the atmosphere, which spread over much of Western USSR and Europe. The Chernobyl disaster is widely considered to have been the worst nuclear power plant accident in history, and is one of only two classified as a level 7 event on the International Nuclear Event Scale (the other being the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011). The battle to contain the contamination and avert a greater catastrophe ultimately involved over 500,000 workers and cost an estimated 18 billion rubles. The official Soviet casualty count of 31 deaths has been disputed, and long-term effects such as cancers and deformities are still being accounted for till this day.

Pompeii The city of Pompeii is a partially buried Roman town-city near Naples in the Italian region of Campania, in the territory of the commune of Pompeii. Along with Herculaneum, Pompeii was partially destroyed and buried under 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) of ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Pompeii was lost for nearly 1700 years before its rediscovery in 1748. Since then, its excavation has provided an extraordinarily detailed insight into the life of a city during the Pax Romana. Today, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Italy, with approximately 2,500,000 visitors every year

Boxing Day Tsunami & Earthquake It was one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history. Indonesia was the hardest-hit country, followed by Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand. With a magnitude of Mw 9.1–9.3, it is the third largest earthquake ever recorded on a seismograph. The earthquake had the longest duration of faulting ever observed, between 8.3 and 10 minutes. It caused the entire planet to vibrate as much as 1 centimetre (0.4 inches) and triggered other earthquakes as far away as Alaska. The plight of the affected people and countries prompted a worldwide humanitarian response. In all, the worldwide community donated more than $14 billion (2004 US$) in humanitarian aid. 14

The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake was an undersea megathrust earthquake that occurred on Sunday, 26 December 2004, with an epicentre off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The resulting tsunami is given various names, including the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, South Asian tsunami, Indonesian tsunami, and Boxing Day tsunami. The earthquake was caused by sub-duction and triggered a series of devastating tsunamis along the coasts of most landmasses bordering the Indian Ocean, killing over 230,000 people in fourteen countries, and inundating coastal communities with waves up to 30 meters (98 ft) high.

Haiti Earthquakes The 2010 Haiti earthquake was a catastrophic magnitude 7.0 Mw earthquake, with an epicenter near the town of LÊogâne , approximately 25 km west of Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital. The earthquake occurred at on 12 January 2010. By 24 January, at least 52 aftershocks measuring 4.5 or greater had been recorded. An estimated three million people were affected by the quake. The Haitian government reported that an estimated 316,000 people had died, 300,000 had been injured and 1,000,000 made homeless. The government of Haiti also estimated that 250,000 residences and 30,000 commercial buildings had collapsed or were severely damaged.

Many countries responded to appeals for humanitarian aid, pledging funds and dispatching rescue and medical teams, engineers and support personnel. Port-auPrince's morgues were overwhelmed with tens of thousands of bodies. These had to be buried in mass graves. As rescues tailed off, supplies, medical care and sanitation became priorities. Delays in aid distribution led to angry appeals from aid workers and survivors, and looting and sporadic violence were observed. On 22 January the United Nations noted that the emergency phase of the relief operation was drawing to a close, and on the following day the Haitian government officially called off the search for survivors.

H1N1 flu virus pandemic In June 2009, the World Health Organization declared the new strain of swine-origin H1N1 as a pandemic. This strain is often called swine flu by the public media. This novel virus spread worldwide and had caused about 17,000 deaths by the start of 2010. On August 10, 2010, the World Health Organization declared the H1N1 influenza pandemic over, saying worldwide flu activity had returned to typical seasonal patterns. As of 26 April 2011, an H1N1 pandemic preparedness alert has been issued by the World Health Organisation

(WHO) for the Americas. The affected areas have included the Chihuahua region of Mexico where its severity and work load have been high. It is reported by the aforementioned Recombinomics source that the current vaccine (California/7/2009) for H1N1 influenza lost its effectiveness in 2011. This point is all the more significant since it is the current virus target for the northern hemisphere's flu vaccine, and is the intended choice for the southern hemisphere.

the human pysche

The human mind is a wonderful thing. Cognition, the act or process of thinking, enables us to process vast amounts of information quickly. Every time your eyes are open, you brain is constantly being bombarded with stimuli. You may be consciously thinking about one specific thing, but you brain is processing thousands of subconscious ideas. Unfortunately, our cognition is not perfect, and there are certain judgment errors that we are prone to making, known in the field of psychology as cognitive biases. They happen to everybody regardless of age, gender, education, intelligence, or other factors. Some of them are well known, others not, but all of them are interesting. They might just be the very things that made humanity so self-destructive in the first place Presented biases that may just bring upon the apocalypse by itself.

Pareidolia 21

Pareidolia is when random images or sounds are perceived as significant. Seeing clouds in the shapes of dinosaurs, Jesus on a hot pocket, or hearing messages when a record is played backward are common examples of pareidolia. The common element is that the stimulus is neutral, it does not have intentional meaning; the meaning is in the viewer’s perception.

Halo Effect The Halo effect is the tendency for an individual’s positive or negative trait to “spill over” to other areas of their personality in others’ perceptions of them. This bias happens a lot in employee performance appraisals

Herd Mentality

Reactance Reactance is the urge to do the opposite of what someone wants you to do out of a need to resist a perceived attempt to constrain your freedom of choice. This is common with rebellious teenagers, but any attempt to resist authority due to perceived threats to freedom and/or choice is reactance. The individual may not have a need to do the specific behavior, however the fact that they cannot do it makes them want to.

Placebo Effect The Placebo effect is when an ineffectual substance that is believed to have healing properties produces the desired effect. Especially common with medications, the placebo effect has been observed when individuals given a sugar pill for a real ailment report improvement. Placebos are still a scientific mystery.

22

Herd mentality is the tendency to adopt the opinions and follow the behaviors of the majority to feel safer and to avoid conflict. Also known as “Mob Mentality, this is, at its most common form, peer pressure. Herd mentality explains why fads get so popular. Clothes, cars, hobbies, styles, all it takes is a group of people who think something is cool, and it catches on.
