2017 FUNdamentals Summer Camps: Some housekeeping and safety guidelines to ensure that everyone’s camp experience at MCCC is a great one! Before Camp • Each camper must have a signed Release of Liability Waiver on file with the Office prior to the first day of camp. • It is recommended that you register your child for the grade level they will enter in the fall. Drop Off • Be sure you have designated on the emergency form who will be dropping off/picking up your child from camp each day. • Do not drop your child off any earlier than 10 minutes prior to the start of camp! • Upon arrival on the first day of camp, stop at the check-in table to confirm your child’s registgration and liability form is on file. • You must walk your child to and from the classroom each day of camp. Do not drop your child off in the parking lot! Pick Up • Arrive promptly at the classroom to pick up your child each day of camp. If a parent is consistently late, we reserve the right to prohibit your child from continuing with the camp. • Do not wait in the parking lot and ask your child to walk out unescorted. During Camp Sessions • Appropriate behavior is expected. Students will be prohibited from continuing with camp for misbehavior. • Many camps require campers to wear appropriate clothing and/or bring items from home. Please note camp requirements stated at the end of each camp description. • MCCC staff does not dispense medication. • Have fun! Refund Policy You may cancel your registration and receive a refund (less the cost of the T-shirt) up to the day before the first session meets. No refunds will be issued thereafter. Registration Deadline The deadline for all camps is one week prior to the start date. We must order T-shirts a week prior. Last minute registrations may not be accepted and/or a T-shirt may not be available for your child. Emergency and Liability Waiver You must also complete Part 1 (emergency information) and Part 2 (liability waiver) on the registration form before your registration will be accepted.

Child and Babysitting Safety Camp

For boys and girls grades 6 – 10 CHILD 751-81: Mon – Thurs, June 26 – 29, 1 – 3 p.m. Meets in the La-Z-Boy Center, Room Z 272 When you’re watching other people’s children, the most important thing you can do is keep those children safe. After successfully completing this camp, your parents and the parents of the children you watch will be pleased with how prepared you are! Topics to be covered include: babysitting as a business; safety and injury prevention; leadership; playtime; basic caregiving skills for infants and young children; first aid for bites and stings, bleeding, burns, choking, injuries, poisoning and sudden illness; hands only CPR; and performance and written evaluation. All supplies are included in the cost: ASHI certification, manual, some first aid supplies, CPR practice tool and a tote bag. The camp is taught by Christine Chickeral, an authorized instructor through the American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI).

Meets in the Warrick Student Services/Administration Building, A 150 Calling all junior chefs! Join us for this camp designed to take your cooking skills to the next level! Campers will learn all the basic cooking methods while preparing a different meal daily. Just to keep things tidy, you’ll review kitchen safety and sanitation skills. Note: Campers must wear a longsleeved shirt, long pants and closed-toed shoes. Due to safety concerns, campers who are not dressed appropriately will not be permitted to participate in camp activities that day and/or will be sent home.

Theater Camp

For boys and girls grades 5 – 12 THEA 701-81: Mon – Fri, July 17 – 28 (meets two weeks)

Meets in the La-Z-Boy Center, Meyer Theater Lights, Camera, Action! Steve Ryder, an actor and magician with over 5,000 performances to his credit, will direct this two-week camp designed to teach the fundamentals of the entire theatrical process. Topics will include auditioning, rehearsal, basic make-up and costuming, basic lighting and set creating. Camp concludes with a short original performance for family and friends. True to real theater, not all kids will have the exact number of lines. However, all campers will have a choice to take a role they’re comfortable with and will be involved in the final production, either on stage or behind the scenes. Attendance is critical, please plan to attend all sessions. Too many absences could impact your role in the final production.

willPower for girlPower!® is a proven exercise program designed to suit the needs of young girls, ages 11-13. This one-week camp is comprised of five, two-hour sessions with a celebration session on the final day. The goal is to empower young women to find inspiration, strength and confidence in this fusion of movement and philosophy which is derived from willPower & grace®. While open to all young women in this age group, this program is ideal for groups such as scouting troops, girl’s clubs and big sister groups, youth sport leagues, detention centers and cheerleading groups. Please dress in comfortable exercise clothing and be prepared to go barefoot.

Aspiring Artist Camp

For the aspiring rock and roller! If you ever wanted to learn how to play a guitar, here is your chance! Campers will learn the names of the strings and how to tune a guitar. In addition, you’ll learn basic major and minor chords and basic chord progressions that will enable you to play hundreds of songs. Depending on skill level, campers could learn songs each day while others may need some additional practice at home. Note: Campers must provide their own electric or acoustic guitar and bring it each day to camp.

Designed to bring the budding artist out of you! Taught by Steve Ryder, professional artist, you’ll learn some basic drawing and art skills such as shading, color and perspectives, as well as some basic painting skills. Creativity is encouraged in this camp, as you’ll be painting a group picture and creating your own freeform images. We’ll end this camp with an art gallery show to display your works of art for your family and friends. Note: Campers should wear comfortable play clothes that can get messy and are easily cleaned.

Explore the world through a camera lens! Local fine art photographer Kevin Trickey will teach you the different parts of the camera, how to work them, and the basics of ISO, exposure, composition and flash. This camp is designed for all skill levels, including those who want to experiment with advanced photography. You will spend a small amount of time in the computer lab doing some cool stuff to your photos using Photoshop. Note: Campers will likely be going outside to shoot pictures; please wear or bring appropriate clothing for the weather. Don’t forget to bring your camera.

Meets in the Health Education Building, Room H 165 Terri Langton, M.S., a local health educator, will lead this exciting and educational camp! Campers will have an opportunity to dissect heart, lungs, stomach, eyes and chicken legs. Each day will also feature related topics and creative activities to accompany the organ system such as CPR, nutrition and health occupations. Gloves, dissection supplies and materials will be provided. Note: It is recommended that campers wear comfortable shoes and clothing suitable for the hands-on dissection and other physical activities.

Meets in the Health Education Building, Room H 131 Join basketball coach Gretchen Elliott for a camp designed to improve basketball skills in a competitive and fun environment. Campers will receive instruction in shooting, passing, ball handling, rebounding, defense, offensive concepts, leadership and teamwork. Campers will also participate in individual contests. This camp emphasizes concepts to make each athlete a better player and person. Note: Campers should wear appropriate clothing and bring their own bottled water or container to fill using the drinking fountain.

Transportation is not provided by MCCC. We aim to take the mystery out of guns at an early age and provide skills that will stay with you for a lifetime. While you will learn the NRA’s rules for safe gun handling, rifle parts and operation, shooting fundamentals and range rules, the emphasis will always be on safety! Cost includes use of rifle, ear/eye protection and ammunition at the firing range. This class is taught by Wayne Blank, an NRA-certified instructor. Note: Campers must attend all four classroom sessions to be eligible to participate at the firing range and earn your certificate.

AR 15 Rifle Safety Camp

Transportation is not provided by MCCC. Take your firearm knowledge to the next level! Gain the basic knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for safe use of an AR 15 rifle for target shooting. Cost includes use of rifle, ear/ eye protection and ammunition at the firing range. This class is taught by Wayne Blank, an NRA-certified instructor. Note: Campers must attend all four classroom sessions to be eligible to participate at the firing range and earn your certificate. Prerequisite: You must provide proof of your certificate earned from an NRA basic rifle class.

He brings 20+ years of experience in directing camps and clinics in the surrounding area. Players will learn techniques in serving, underhand passing and attacking. This camp emphasizes concepts intended to help players succeed both on and off the court. Note: Campers should wear appropriate clothing (including knee pads) and bring their own bottled water or container to fill using the drinking fountain.

Basic Pistol Safety Camp

VEX IQ Beginner Robotics Camp

For boys and girls grades 3 – 8 ELEC 729-81: Mon – Thurs, June 26 – 29 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. ELEC 729-82: Mon – Thurs, July 10 – 13 3 – 9 p.m. ELEC 729-83: Mon – Thurs, Aug. 7 – 10 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. Meets in the Career Technology Center, Room T 160/T 166 This camp will give you a general robotics introduction using the VEX IQ robotics platform. You will construct at least two robots to be used to perform various functions, including autonomous driving, lifting objects, driving on a course and avoiding obstacles. Campers will also learn graphical programming and use of sensors as a component in robotics movement. In addition, you’ll receive an introduction to industry norms and receive tele-operated (remote control) robotics driving time in addition to autonomous operation. Please bring lunch each day of camp.

VEX IQ Advanced Robotics Camp

For boys and girls grades 3 – 8 ELEC 730-81: Mon – Thurs, Aug. 14 – 17 3 – 9 p.m. Meets in the Career Technology Center, Room T 166 Advanced VEX IQ campers should have some robotics background on either the VEX IQ or LEGO platform. It will be designed around the 2017-2018 VEX IQ game, which is scheduled for release in late April. In addtion, it will prepare you to compete in VEX IQ at an advanced level. Included are all the concepts of the VEX introduction course and adds Engineering Notebook keeping and advanced planning and project management. Campers should have designed and recorded a viable competition robot by the end of the week. Please bring a lunch each day of camp.

Automotive Camp

For boys and girls grades 9 – 12 AUTO 723-81: Mon – Fri, July 10 – 14 1 – 4:30 p.m. Meets in the Career Technology Center, Room T 178/T 180 An automotive summer camp is heading to MCCC! With a partnership with Roush® and Roush Performance Racing®, the camp will cover a range of topics including shop safety, draining fluids and removing shields as well as an engine swap with fluid checks and Roush’s® very own Performance trailer. We will also discuss and perform simple repairs, problem analysis and career opportunities in the field. Note: To ensure safety, campers must wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants and closed-toe shoes. NO SHORTS. Due to safety concerns, campers who are not dressed appropriately will not be permitted to participate in camp activities that day and/or will be sent home.

For boys and girls grades 8 – 12 DRFTG 732-81: Mon – Fri, July 10 – 14 9:30 a.m. – Noon DRFTG 732-82: Mon – Fri, July 10 – 14 1 – 3:30 p.m. Meets in the Career Technology Center, Room T 158/T 156 This camp will give campers a look into some of the skills and tools used in the mechanical design process. You will learn about 2D drawing, using the DraftSight software as well as create 3D drawings and animations using SolidWorks. In addition, you will get to see how 3D printers create models.

Metrology (Science of Measurement) Camp

For boys and girls grades 8 – 12 QSTC 774-81: Mon – Fri, July 10 – 14 9:30 a.m. – Noon QSTC 774-82: Mon – Fri, July 10 – 14 1 – 3:30 p.m. Meets in the Career Technology Center, Room T 159 The Metrology (measurement science) camp will teach you how to design and run measurement calibrations to determine accuracy, precision, reliability and traceability. Metrology, after all, borrows concepts from physics, math (mostly statistics), chemistry, all kinds of engineering, and even a little biology and medicine at times. Campers will experience hands-on activities.

Welding Camp

For boys and girls grades 9 – 12 WELD 725-81: Mon – Fri, June 19 – 23 9:30 a.m. – Noon WELD 725-82: Mon – Fri, June 19 – 23 1 – 3:30 p.m. Meets in the Career Technology Center, Room T 165/T 169 Explore the exciting field of welding! You will learn the basics of welding technology with an emphasis on shielded metal arc (stick) welding and gas metal arc (MIG) wire welding on low carbon steel. You will gain hands-on experience with welding equipment, including the opportunity to complete a welding art project that you will take home. Previous welding experience is not necessary! Note: To ensure safety, campers must wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants and closed-toe shoes. NO SHORTS and no nylon of any sort. Due to safety concerns, campers who are not dressed appropriately will not be permitted to participate in camp activities that day and/or will be sent home.

The Monroe County CTE Committee is a partnership between the Monroe County ISD, Monroe County Community College, Monroe County Business Development Corporation and all nine local school districts. The goal is to develop STEM programs for students in grades K-12 in every Monroe County school district. This partnership is made up of industry, business, health care agencies and community-based organizations.
