VALÉRIE: I thought it would be fun to play with gender roles. To create some kind of ambiguity. I like to imagine Monsieur Ed as a weird old English gentleman. Who collects bow ties. Also, I love the art of drag. That might have something to do with it as well. Who knows! Monsieur Ed is a mystery, even to me!

Valérie: Oh, so you’re the breeze that keeps moving the papers around? GHOST: Maybe I am, maybe it’s the wind!

Ghost: Anything else? VALÉRIE: Yes, lots more, but I can’t recount all my life in these few pages. Oh, but I also won two prestigious design awards from South by Southwest and one Cannes Cyber Lion and a bunch of other stuff.

Ghost: Before you created Monsieur Ed, what were GHOST: You say that like it’s noyou doing? thing. VALÉRIE: Way back in the day, I studied anthropology and even participated in an archeological dig in Peru. GHOST: So you’re a little bit like Indiana Jones?

VALÉRIE: Well, it did not make me famous or rich...

Ghost: I see...what would you do if you weren’t a publisher? Any lingering dreams?

VALÉRIE: Yes, but with fewer VALÉRIE: Hum...I think I’d be a fovillains and adventure and without rensic pathologist, an FBI profiler, a whip! a textile artist, an anthropologist specializing in Southeast Asia, or GHOST: That’s no fun! So that was anything that would allow me to way back in the days....what else live in Southeast Asia for most of did you do? the year. VALÉRIE: For 13 years, I worked as an art director in big creative agencies and as a freelance art director and illustrator. I learned a lot about graphic design, branding, advertising, telling stories and thinking outside the box.

Mr.

GHOST: I don’t think any of those things would make you famous or rich...

Ed

Ghost: Who is this Monsieur Ed, and where does the name come from?

VALÉRIE: ... GHOST: Let’s change the subject. VALÉRIE: Let’s!

GHOST: When I watch you work, I can tell you pay a lot of attention to details. You think no one is watching when you rewrite the letter A 35 times until you get the perfect shape, but I see you!

Books

Ghost: see you reading a lot, I miss reading, but it’s hard to turn the pages when you’re immaterial. If you could take only ONE book with you to your favourite Thai island, which one would it be? VALÉRIE: I can’t only pick one, really, it’s impossible… how about three? I love character-driven fiction, so let’s just say that these three books left such an impression on me, they haunt me as though they were my own stories. FIRST: The Secret History by Donna Tartt. I love how she creates deep and complex characters and introduces them slowly to the reader. SECOND: Geek Love by Katherine Dunn. It’s such a perfectly strange book. If you can get your hands on a copy, read it! Also, A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara. I picked up this book while in Bangkok. I hesitated at first because it’s HUGE, and I had no room left in my luggage. But I’m glad I went the rest of the trip without underwear to make room for this book because it turned out to be one of my alltime favourites. GHOST: I never wear underwear...

VALÉRIE: OH! Just one more! A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry. India, at its worst, is still delightful and haunting. AND ONE LAST, LAST, ONE, I PROMISE. American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis. It’s written in such a way that, while reading it, I felt like I was going as crazy as Patrick Bateman. And also…

Ghost: We said one! Your luggage is going to weigh a ton, and I can’t help you with it! VALÉRIE: Ok, ok… but DavidFos-

terWallace’sInfiniteJest.

Such a challenging read! Ok, I’m done...for now!

Ghost: All this talking made me tired. How about we rest for a while? VALÉRIE: Sure, I’ll make us a cup of tea! GHOST: Sounds Good! THE END!

The Story

Élénor is too curious to go to bed. Instead of sleeping, she’d rather play or do any other activity. One night, her mother tells her about Dreamland, a magical place where anything is possible. To go there, you just have to close your eyes and let yourself drift off to sleep. But Élénor doesn’t believe a word of it.   What nonsense! A place like Dreamland can’t exist!   Then, one night, she encounters What’s-His-Name, a strange creature with whom she will fly away to an unknown world. But Élénor isn’t dreaming – she’s going on an adventure!

What We Love About This Book

We discovered Aurélie’s work on Instagram, and we were immediately captivated and charmed by her style, the complexity and uniqueness of her illustrations, all drawn by hand. We loved the idea of a book with a dream-like structure. The story is told in a series of scenes that quickly transport us from one place and emotion to another, imitating the unpredictableness of dreams. A perfect bedtime story for the little ones who do not like to sleep!

The Author  Odette  Barberousse

As far back as she can remember, Aurélie Barbedette (known under the pen name of Odette Barberousse) always loved to draw. Nevertheless, it took her around 20 years and a few detours to finally realize it was the only thing she ever wanted to do with her life.   She loves old things, black and white pictures and listening to her grandmother’s memories. When she became a mother, she discovered a passion for children’s literature. While reading to her sons every night, she came up with the idea of a little girl who’s too curious to go to sleep. Élénor is her first book.

What We Love About This Book

This series is full of twists and turns. There’s plenty of drama and farcical humour and a villain who’s trying to be even more mischievous. Marthe plays with the codes of storytelling, giving readers a unique and incomparable experience. Accompanied by Richard’s illustrations, Mischief in the Wild West has become an instant classic and the kind of illustrated novel you’ll always want to come back to.

The Story

Armed with the strength of his foul breath and mischievous pranks, a super-disgusting villain rules over a small town in the Wild West and terrorizes its residents. This unscrupulous outlaw is having the time of his life until he realizes that unfortunately for him, despite all his wickedness, he loses and the good guys win in the end. But one day, out of sheer and unexpected luck, one of his evil ideas gives him the power to change his destiny.

The Author Marthe  Pelletier

Marthe Pelletier has always been fascinated by crows. She even describes herself as a human crow and spends a lot of time at her cabin, feeding them and squawking with them. She once told us she’d always wanted to live in the Wild West as an outlaw. You could say Mischief in the Wild West is her unofficial fictional biography.

The Illustrator Richard  Écrapou

As a child, Richard Écrapou terrorized his south-central Montréal neighbourhood. He scared the children and demanded lunch money, spray-painted the alley cats and trampled his neighbours’ flowerbeds. Eventually, he gave that all up to become a cartoonist with a unique style. He was the perfect choice to bring the Mischief in the Wild West trilogy to life.

Pioneers! O pioneers!*

The Author Marthe  Pelletier

Marthe Pelletier would have loved to live in the Wild West. Unfortunately for her, she was born a few hundred years too late. She worked in documentary filmmaking for more than 20 years, all the while jotting down ideas for children’s books. In 2000, she decided to switch gears: she would write children’s literature and just watch documentaries. Also, she really has a thing for crows.

The Illustrator Richard  Écrapou

Richard Écrapou is a veteran of the underground comic book scene, working in the shadows under his many aliases (Richard Suicide and William Parano). Born Richard Beaulieu in 1961, he now lends his expertise, badass attitude, quirky big-nosed characters and witty humour to the world of children’s literature, to our immense delight.

The Story

Now that Sam is a ghost, he’s not afraid of anything anymore. When he was alive, he was scared of almost everything. Well, to be honest, he was scared of everything! Basketballs and swings terrified him, while skipping ropes and white sheets horrified him. He was even scared of cute little bunny rabbits. Bunny rabbits, you say! Yes, and that’s not all. To find out Sam’s long list of fears, let’s meet up in… hell! Don’t worry, everybody is very friendly!

The Author Valérie  Picard

What We Love About This Book

We love it because it tells us a lot about life, seizing the day and facing our fears! These subjects are very dear to our hearts. We all have to deal with fears and worries at some point in our lives, and this is especially true for kids. We love how the book tackles a difficult subject through quirky humour and how the text and illustrations complement each other. Together, they create a story that unfolds in a Burtonesque world but is still lighthearted and accessible to younger readers.

Valérie’s father was always telling her how much he wanted to visit Italy and travel to South America, learn to ride a motorbike, build wood furniture, or live in a little house by a lake. I’ll do those things when I retire, he always said.   He passed away in 2010 without having done any of it. He’s the reason she wrote this book!

Aboard this little train travelling around the world, passengers and their luggage are piled in. Everybody is ready for a wonderful vacation! Even Mlle. Here’s a hint: sometimes things are not what they seem!

Rhéa Dufresne is a Jill-of-alltrades. She happily practises, in no particular order, the following professions: book reviewer, editorial director, instructor and author. Many of her books sprang from a question crossing her mind. The Story

After obtaining a diploma in animated film from Arts Décoratifs de Paris, Marion Arbona started working as a children’s book illustrator. When she isn’t drawing, she’s particularly interested in deep-sea fish, cats (even though she’s allergic) and weird plants. She also likes reading and watching movies. What We Love About This Book

We love Marianne’s world; it often has elements of magical realism, which we’re very fond of. This book is a perfect example of her incredible imagination. The project simmered away in her head for several years after she began her studies in graphic design. She developed an entire ecosystem and a story around her fantastic creatures. We are also always on the lookout for adventurous and inspiring young heroines, and Amandine is a great example. She’s such a lovely and strong character.

Marianne creates enchanting, charming and dreamlike worlds that evoke a sense of wonder. Her illustrations are always filled with richness and depth. Born in Venezuela, she arrived in Canada as a child, where she went on to study illustration and graphic design. Through subjects dear to her heart, like nature and family legacies, she takes us on colourful journeys that are always packed with adventure.

The Story

Alone in her grandmother’s garden, Arianne is bored. But with the help of a cute little rock, she discovers a garden, hidden between the poppies and the lotus flowers. She’ll embark on an extraordinary journey that will transport her back in time. She’ll race with grasshoppers, ride on the backs of dinosaurs and transform into a masterful star hunter. The invisible garden will brighten Arianne’s day in a most unexpected way. Unless it was all a dream…

The Story

From a love story that crosses mountains to a spirited grandfather and a mother’s legacy, Marianne Ferrer weaves an intimate and tender portrait of her family’s bittersweet history. She transcends time and delves deep into the source of her identity, where her roots are anchored.

The Inspiration

As a little girl in Venezuela, Marianne Ferrer would be furious whenever someone called her Marianna. There’s a whole story behind her name, which is why it’s so precious to her. Her mother was born on July 14, Bastille Day, an emblematic day in France. Fittingly, her father wanted to name her Marianne after France’s national symbol, an embodiment of strength and courage, but named her Maria Liliana instead. He passed away when Maria Liliana was still a child. His death left a huge void in her. When her daughter was born, she named her Marianne so she would inherit her grandfather’s creative and sensitive spirit. Marianne proudly carries the story and legacy of her name within her. Roots is a tribute to the people who made her the woman she is today.

create the illustrations challenged my sense of aesthetics. The beautiful landscapes are illustrated in a more organic way and call for contemplation while the characters are treated in a very graphic style. I find this dichotomy interesting, because it requires special attention and a more active reading to decode the image. The story, which speaks of resilience and adaptation to changes, is particularly touching to me as these are aspects of my personality that I seek to cultivate.

Jim’s Lion (Le lion de Jacob) is a graphic novel with many layers. It is filled with symbolism and encourages a deep connection with the inner self. Every time I read it, I gain a better understanding of it. Jim’s journey inspires us to find our inner courage and resilience. These are things we want to convey to readers through our books. The minimalist text and powerful yet muted illustrations leave plenty of room for the reader to interpret the story in their own way.

Marianne’s work encourages self-discovery; it really shows a curiosity to explore the human experience. There is a sense of something greater than us, invisible but universal, that is very contemplative.
