his is the fifth issue of Computer Games magazine, and we’re glad you’re reading it. Why not email us at any of the email addresses below to let us know what you think of the magazine? If you’re already a regular reader, you may have noticed that the last issue (Nº4) was delayed by a week. We’re sorry about that. Our website was down for several days and we were unable to retrive our stories. We hope that doesn’t happen again any time soon. What with all the reports about hacking, it’s easy to think that the website was attacked, but we’re not sure about that. Anyway, we’re back and we’re getting better with every issue. It’s early days for us, so we should probably expect a few hiccups along the way. But stay with us and watch this space. We guarantee things will get more interesting with every week that passes by. l

F
ollowing the critical acclaim of his rousing music score for Insomniac Games’ Resistance 2, Los Angelesbased film composer Boris Salchow (80 Minutes, Prom Night) returns to craft a darker cinematic soundtrack for Resistance 3 - reflecting the struggle of the remaining group of human survivors against an overwhelming force of alien invaders. To capture an authentic and unique sound for this alternate history sci-fi story set in the 1950’s, Salchow and Insomniac recorded the emotionally diverse musical score with orchestra at the historical Abbey Road Studios in London. Developed exclusively for PlayStation 3 by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, Resistance 3 will be released on September 6, 2011. Set four years after the end of Resistance 2, dishonorably discharged Sentinel Joseph Capelli has given up fighting the Chimeran menace. Now he’s in hiding with other survivors, including his wife and young son. When Dr Fyodor Malikov arrives with the plan to defeat the occupying Chimeran force, Capelli must leave his family and journey the harrowing road from Oklahoma to New York City. Along the way, he’ll encounter the remnants of

humanity left in the aftermath of the brutal Chimeran invasion. Paul Mudra, Audio Director, Insomniac Games: “For Resistance 3 we required a composer who would be able to interpret the nuance of mankind’s struggle for survival in a brutal world and create an engaging and emotive score. Boris spent many hours at our studio becoming familiar with the story, meeting with several key members of the development team and immersing himself in our process and culture. The soundtrack that Boris composed is compelling and a perfect fit for the game. We consider it to be a key part of the overall Resistance 3 experience.” Marcus Smith, Creative Director, Insomniac Games, said: “Working with Boris has been a dream. I’ve never had the pleasure of working with someone so committed to the project as a whole; Not only did he spend lots of time with us at our studio listening and asking questions, but he’d also make great suggestions on story, pacing and character development. The soundtrack he delivered is stunning in its intricacy, delicacy and humanity.” Boris Salchow, the composer, said: “In Resistance 3 human civilization as such is gone. People flock together in small groups, trying to survive as long as possible. Not even a military organisation is left. The soundtrack reflects this – instead of military elements, we find some very intimate sounding compositions where I use piano, woodwinds, a boy soprano and somber string arrangements. For this setting, it was crucial to record the ➜

Going to London and recording this music with such incredible A-list musicians at this historical venue was the perfect match for the game, and it was an incredible honor for me personally. I am very thankful that Insomniac made this happen.” Resistance 3 is powered by Insomniac Games’ fifth-generation PlayStation 3 technology. Featuring new upgradeable weapons, the return of the weapon wheel, two-player online or split-screen campaign co-op and a progressionbased multiplayer experience, Resistance 3 delivers a heroic-yet savage first-person shooter experience for PlayStation 3. The game itself is currently one of the best-selling games in the world. Below is an overview of the story of the game. Overview of the game America is lost. Four years after the epic conclusion of Resistance 2, dishonourably discharged Sentinel Joseph Capelli is in hiding from the invading Chimeran menace with a pocket of survivors, including his new wife and young son. But when Dr. Fyodor Malikov arrives with a desperate plan, he sets into motions the events of Resistance 3, the third instalment in the popular full-featured first-person shooter series. Resistance 3 is created by critically-acclaimed developer Insomniac Games exclusively for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system. Set in a brutal, alternative 1950s

universe, America has been successfully conquered and destroyed by the deadly Chimeran race, forcing the last remaining human survivors to seek refuge in hiding. Players must take on the role of Joseph Capelli, the last surviving Sentinel from a clandestine military program, as he comes out of hiding to journey across a land of ruin in a heroic fight for survival against the merciless Chimera. In addition to an epic single-player campaign, Resistance 3 will offer two-player online or split-screen co-op through the single-player campaign, and a new, focused progression-based multiplayer experience. It’s August 1957, four years after the conclusion of Resistance 2 that left Lieutenant Nathan Hale dead on the battlefield against the invading Chimeran race. Joseph Capelli has been dishonourably discharged from the US Army for killing Hale. With the Chimera completely occupying the planet, Capelli has given up on the seemingly hopeless fight and has retreated into hiding underground with his wife and young son in Haven, Oklahoma. But as the climate of the planet continues to collapse, scientist Dr. Fyodor Malikov finds Capelli with a plan to deliver a devastating blow against the occupying Chimeran force. In order to protect his family, Capelli must leave them behind and embark on a harrowing mission across the country to New York City. Along the way, he and Malikov will encounter the survivors and remnants left in the aftermath of the brutal Chimeran invasion. l

layers of EVE Online have just received over $1.5 million of virtual currency for use in the EVE Online Noble Exchange (NeX) Store as a reward for sharing the incredible player generated images and videos on www.eveisreal.net. Future unlocks include a reward of 1,500 Aurum for the tier 3 unlock, and 2,000 Aurum for the final level. With this most recent milestone, the value to date of unlocked Aurum rewards stands at little over 3.6 million dollars, with a chance for players to double that reward going forward at the next unlock levels. EVEisReal.net was created as a museum of player generated content and a sharing hub of that same content. EVE Online has the best player driven gameplay and economy in gaming, period. The stories that come out of EVE are both huge and unique, mainly because EVE is built upon the idea of emergent gameplay – that is gameplay that only becomes apparent as massive numbers exist simultaneously in one shared world on one server, worldwide. EVEisReal.net is a repository of a small slice of that greater shared history and a great place for people new to the EVE universe to explore what makes the game into an experience. ➜ Gamespot gave Driver San Francisco 8/10, and said: “Driver: San Francisco’s inspired shift mechanic and wealth of action-packed content make it an absolute blast that revives the franchise.” Eurogamer gave it 8/10, saying: “In Reflection’s best work since the Driver series began, it’s managed to tame the ridiculous and conjure something quite sublime.” “Ubisoft Reflections has just upshifted the rules of racing,” said Edge, giving it 8/10. “Once you’re behind the wheel, you’ll realise that San Francisco is definitely a longoverdue return to form for the Driver series,” said CVG, which gave it 8.5/10. “Undoubtedly the most complete, polished offering in the series to date,” according to Total Video Games, which awarded it 8/10. Reflection is inviting players to let them know of their impressions of the game. “Let us know as soon as you’ve gotten your hands on the game!” You can share your thoughts on the game in Reflection’s forum, on its Facebook page and through Twitter. For those of you are new to the game, one of the most famous features of previous Driver games is the option to make your own video of your driving adventures. It’s back in the new version, Driver San Francisco. With the Film Director option, you can edit your replays, create your own chases and share your replays online with the Driver Club. In the meantime, why not create your very own Driver San Francisco trailer with our trailer generator on Facebook? Reflection has also made the missions tougher but doesn’t think players will have a problem with that. “Do you have what it takes? Remember how the garage mission of the first Driver game made you break your controller out of frustration when you were young? Well, if experience is skill - wait, what? that was 12 years ago already?! - you shall now have no issue beating this mission in Driver San Francisco! “To unlock the challenge, just ask yourself: what car would you use if you needed to go back in the past?” Reflection has also released the full tracklist of the game. ➜

TIGA call to enable UK to create more triple-A games TIGA’s call coincides with Ubisoft Reflection’s launch of Driver San Francisco
T
IGA, the trade association representing the UK video games industry, said that the release of Ubisoft Reflection’s video game Driver San Francisco demonstrated that the UK could develop Triple A video games, but that the ability to do so in the future would depend to an important extent on favourable Government support. Developed by Ubisoft Reflections in Newcastle (the creators of the original Driver title), Driver San Francisco marks the return of the established action driving video game series that has sold over 14 million copies worldwide. Gamers take the role of John Tanner, a hardened detective involved in a relentless manhunt throughout the City by the Bay, with the game providinga free-roaming, classic, cinematic car chase experience. The development of Triple A video game titles requires significant financial resources and highly skilled development teams – a typical Triple A title could have a development budget in excess of £20 million. Ubisoft Reflections has employed a highly qualified team of over 200 development staff, most of whom are qualified to degree level in disciplines including computer science, mathematics, art and design; some of the development team are qualified to PhD level. Dr Richard Wilson, TIGA CEO, said: “The release of Driver San Francisco shows that the UK has a highly talented and qualified games development workforce that has the ability to develop Triple A ➜

video games. Everyone in the UK video games industry will want to congratulate Ubisoft Reflections on completing the game and wish them commercial success. “However, the UK’s ability to develop Triple A video games in the future is questionable, given the uneven playing field that the UK games industry is competing upon. “Games that require considerable development costs will naturally be commissioned in countries with the right skills and tax base. “While the UK has the skills base, our tax environment is not favourable. Our key competitors benefit from tax breaks for games production. The UK does not.” Gareth Edmondson, TIGA ViceChairman and Managing Director of Ubisoft Reflections, said: “The UK still has the potential to create more Triple A video games like Driver San Francisco. “Our experience at Ubisoft Reflections shows that we have a talented workforce, one of the best in the world. However, we could be making more Triple A games and creating more highly skilled jobs in locations such as Newcastle if we had a tax break for games production. “TIGA will continue to advance the case for Games Tax Relief and improved R&D tax credits to enable the UK video games development sector to achieve its potential.” ➜
