For nearly 60 years, the Claire Loftus Carriage House Theatre at Montalvo Arts Center has been a treasured venue for performing arts in Silicon Valley. A unique and acoustically balanced space, the Carriage House hosts world-class talent in music, comedy, dance, and more. 45th SF Stand-Up Comedy Competition Semifinals Thu, September 16, 2021 • 7:30pm Premier: $33 | Reserved: $30 “The catalyst for [San Francisco’s] comedy explosion” — Michael Macrone The San Francisco Comedy Competition is an annual, multi-week, judged, stand-up comedy contest. Over thirty comedians perform in shows held in comedy clubs, bars, restaurants, casinos, and theaters in San Francisco and around the Bay Area. No other competition can claim to have discovered as many future comedy superstars as the annual San Francisco Comedy Competition! The list of award winners over the years includes Dana Carvey, Ellen DeGeneres, Sinbad, Patton Oswalt, Will Durst, Dane Cook, Ralphie May, and many others. For the 2021 competition, Montalvo is honored to host a portion of the semifinal round. Top contestants from the preliminary weeks will each perform 8-12 minute sets that will have you rolling with laughter! Each contestant will perform for a unique group of judges for every show they do, and judges give scores in seven categories. The top five performers in the semifinals will move on to the finals round, which will take place over four nights at three Bay Area venues the following week.
Brubeck Brothers Quartet Sun, September 19, 2021 • 7:30pm Premier: $55 | Reserved: $49 “Relaxed and expressive, their joy is contagious” — All About Jazz 2020 marked the Centennial Year of jazz giant Dave Brubeck. To celebrate his life and legacy, his sons Chris and Dan Brubeck, who performed with their father for decades, will curate a multimedia show with their Brubeck Brothers Quartet. Through stories told by his sons and music performed by the Quartet, the show invites audiences to travel along the timeline of Dave’s extraordinary life and career. Although the Quartet’s style is rooted in “straight-ahead” jazz, their concerts also integrate the influences of funk, blues, and world music. Their uncompromising music reflects their dedication to melody, rhythm, culture, and the spontaneous spirit of jazz.
The High Kings Wed, October 13, 2021 • 7:30pm Premier: $48 | Reserved: $43 “They harmonize with better precision than a world champion Irish step dancer” — BroadwayWorld The heirs of Ireland’s folk heritage, The High Kings first exploded onto the scene in 2008. Charting a brave new course for a bright new era of Irish ballad music—equal parts rousing and reflective—they sing the songs of yesteryear in a contemporary style and arrangement that remains true to the original. The High Kings boast incredible versatility and skill as multi-instrumentalists, playing 13 instruments between the four of them. Performing hundreds of sold-out shows in Ireland and the US, they beguile audiences with renditions of old favorites and their own folk originals. Together, they have achieved what many had thought improbable, if not impossible: they have moved the Irish ballad tradition into the here and now, carrying along with them the steadfast older fans while simultaneously bringing it to a new audience.
Spyro Gyra Thu, October 14, 2021 • 7:30pm Premier: $62 | Reserved: $55 “Truly the premier jazz/funk/pop group of this generation” — JazzTimes Spyro Gyra is the unlikely story of a group with humble beginnings in Buffalo, New York, that has continued to reach an international audience for over forty years, with over ten million albums sold and five thousand shows played. Since the 1970s, these jazz fusion giants have been a commercially successful pop-jazz group whose music combines R&B and elements of pop and Caribbean music with jazz which emphasize danceable melodies.

Croce Plays Croce Fri, October 15, 2021 • 7:30pm Premier: $65 | Reserved: $58 “Soulfully rendered, rollicking covers” — Glide Magazine A.J. Croce performs Croce Plays Croce, a special night of music featuring a complete set of classics by his late father Jim Croce, some of his own tunes, and songs that influenced both him and his father. This special event features such timeless songs as “Operator,” “Time in a Bottle,” (a song written for A.J.), and “Lovers Cross.” Throughout the evening, A.J. speaks on his musical connection to his father, painting a picture for the audience of family, artistry, and memory. Jim Croce was an American folk singer with a shortlived professional recording and touring career, followed by decades of posthumous fame as one of the greatest songwriters ever. A virtuoso piano player, A.J. Croce’s 25year career has produced nine studio albums and seen him tour with the likes of Willie Nelson, Lenny Kravitz, Earth, Wind, and Fire, and B.B. King.
Graham Parker Wed, October 20, 2021 • 7:30pm Premier: $49 | Reserved: $44 “Parker’s pub-rock snarl has worked its magic for a generation” — Village Voice Graham Parker emerged from England’s vibrant mid70s pub-rock music scene and was promptly tagged the quintessential angry young man. His musical style informed the likes of Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson, and earned raves from rock critics worldwide. His recordings with his band The Rumour are legendary, earning two spots in Rolling Stone’s “Top 100 Albums of All Time” list.

Hiroshima Fri, October 22, 2021 • 7:30pm Premier: $72 | Reserved: $67 “One of the most iconic cornerstones in contemporary jazz” — Smooth Jazz Ride After more than 40 years of performing, no one has yet been able to match the stylings of the Asian-influenced jazz band Hiroshima. Their smooth-as-silk sound, which falls somewhere between R&B, pop, world music, salsa, and jazz, integrates traditional Japanese instruments and musical traditions. They have toured with the likes of Miles Davis, received several Grammy nods and multiple gold records, sold over four million albums worldwide, and continue to produce truly innovative, hypnotic music. In 2012, Hiroshima was given the Visionary Award by East West Players, the oldest Asian Pacific American (APA) theatre company in the United States, in recognition of the band’s impact on the Asian community through their artistic excellence and support of APA performing arts.

Damien Sneed's "Joy to the World: A Christmas Musical Journey"
Wed, December 8, 2021 • 7:30pm Premier: $69 | Reserved: $64 “He uses his artistry to make our world a better place” — Wynston Marsalis A multi-genre recording artist and instrumentalist, Damien Sneed is a pianist, vocalist, organist, composer, conductor, arranger, producer, and arts educator. He has worked with jazz, classical, pop, and R&B legends, including Wynton Marsalis, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Jessye Norman, and the late Aretha Franklin. He has served as artistic director for numerous award-winning gospel performers and is a 2020 Dove Award winner for his work as a featured producer and writer on the Clark Sisters’ newest project, The Return.
Joy To The World: A Christmas Musical Journey takes us through Sneed’s original arrangements of gospel, jazz and classical favorites. The performance features a cast of 10 singers and musicians performing wellknown holiday classics such as “Silent Night,” “This Christmas,” “O Come Emmanuel,” “Little Drummer Boy,” and of course, “Joy To The World.” This year, take a musical journey to Montalvo and celebrate the season with us!

Today, the Christmas traditions in Mexico vary from region to region and are a blend of indigenous culture, Spanish heritage, and many other influences. Focusing on Nochebuena (Christmas Eve), this spectacular concert features an all-star cast of music and dance—the esteemed Ballet Folklórico de Los Ángeles and Mariachi Garibaldi de Jaime Cuéllar— presenting traditions and customs that people in Mexico celebrate during the festive season.
David Benoit Christmas Tribute to Charlie Brown with Special Guest Courtney Fortune Fri, December 17, 2021 • 7:30pm Premier: $65 | Reserved: $59 “A passionate musical innovator” — Smooth Jazz New York Grammy-nominated pianist/composer/arranger David Benoit reigns supreme as one the founding fathers of contemporary jazz. And he owes it all, as it turns out, to Charlie Brown: Benoit recalls being bitten by the jazz bug after watching a Peanuts special on television. Now, more than 50 years after the classic animated special first aired, Benoit—who has been the official composer for the new Peanuts specials for over a decade—performs his own Christmas originals along with the beloved Vince Guaraldi classics. Windham Hill’s Winter Solstice featuring Barbara Higbie, Todd Boston, and Mia Pixley Sat, December 18, 2021 • 3pm & 7:30pm Premier: $56 | Reserved: $50 “Full of life and brilliant!” — The San Francisco Chronicle Celebrate the winter solstice and its warm traditions with this joyous acoustic concert of original and traditional music! This year marks the 35th anniversary of the multi-platinum selling Winter Solstice album series originally released on Windham Hill Records. Grammy-nominated singer, fiddler, pianist, and songwriter Barbara Higbie is joined by composer Todd Boston and cellist Mia Pixley to lead this lively, holiday-themed performance. The name “Windham Hill” is synonymous with some of the best in acoustic music from the 1980s and 90s. The label’s ten Winter Solstice compilation recordings have sold in the millions, and “changed people’s conceptions of seasonal music” (John Diliberto, Echoes radio show host). Today, Windham Hill’s Winter Solstice concerts bring the music full circle, decades after they were originally conceived on the Stanford campus.

It is, when performed by The Queen's Cartoonists! Leading the audience through a world of virtuosic musicianship, multi-instrumental mayhem, and comedy, The Queen's Cartoonists play music from classic cartoons and contemporary animation, synchronized to video projections of the original films. Tying this diverse concert together are comedic anecdotes involving the cartoons and their composers. The band is on a musical mission of equal parts performance, preservation, and education. Similar to other legendary rock ’n’ roll neighborhoods like Haight Ashbury or Greenwich Village, Laurel Canyon in the Hollywood Hills hosted an enclave of artists in the decade between 1965 and 1975 who would forever change the look, sound, and attitude of American pop music. Members included The Mamas and The Papas, the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, The Doors, James Taylor, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and the Eagles. More than a tribute act, Live from Laurel Canyon performs beloved music, but also shares the stories that inspired these iconic moments in music history.

Janis Ian
The End of the Line Tour Fri, March 18, 2022 • 7:30pm Premier: $65 | Reserved: $59 “A briliant songwriter” — Joan Baez By the age of sixteen, Janis Ian was a regular performer at the Gaslight (the center of the Greenwich Village folk scene), had played to a sold-out audience at Carnegie Hall, and was nominated for a Grammy—all while living with her parents and younger brother in their Upper West Side apartment. Ian spent time in her early years with fellow outsiders Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix. A versatile and talented performer, known for her “substance, depth, and musicality” (The New York Times), she refused to be pigeonholed as a “protest singer.” Her 1975 hit “At Seventeen,” an anthem of teenage angst, would garner her five Grammy nominations and two Grammy Awards. Masters of Hawaiian Music: George Kahumoku, Jr., Jeff Peterson, & Sonny Lim Sun, March 20, 2022 • 7:30pm Premier: $57 | Reserved: $51 “Virtuosic keepers of a cultural flame” — The New York Times Master slack key guitarist George Kahumoku Jr. is known as “Hawai‘i’s Renaissance Man”: a four-time Grammy and multiple Na Hōkū Award winner, he is also a vocalist, storyteller, and songwriter. Silence your cellphones, spit out your gum, and sit up straight: America’s beloved ruler-wielding nun, Sister, is back in the habit and headed for Montalvo! Part audienceparticipation event, part spontaneous stand-up routine, Late Nite Catechism is a laugh-out-loud series of shows inspired by the 1960s-era Catholic school experience. Its various iterations have reigned for years off-Broadway and in Las Vegas where they have schooled audiences with side-splitting humor. Sister’s Easter Catechism, the fifth in the sinfully funny series, tackles seasonal questions about pet heaven and the significance of those adorable baby chicks!
