Carriage House Performing Arts Series June 2022

WELCOME (AND WELCOME BACK) TO MONTALVO! After over a year of screens and social distance, I’m so glad that you are able to be with us tonight. Whether it’s your first time here, or your fiftieth—welcome! Over the course of the pandemic, I have heard many people mention missing live performance and music. Missing not only seeing live performances, but as one patron said, missing that “electric feeling of having a musical or artistic experience in a group,” sharing the experience with family, friends, and even other Photo: David Gonzales

audience members in attendance too. The importance of live, in-person programming cannot be overstated,

and I am thrilled to welcome back The Valley Foundation Carriage House Performing Arts Series, with thanks to The Valley Foundation for their generous support as our title sponsor. As a multidisciplinary arts center, there’s even more to enjoy at Montalvo in addition to the world-class talent found in the Carriage House. We are a public park and arboretum open 364 days a year for picnics, hiking, and leisurely strolls, as well as a vibrant cultural producer supporting an artist residency, vital arts education programming, and so much more. Montalvo is a nonprofit organization—as such, we rely on the support of patrons like you in order to continue serving our Silicon Valley community. If you have not yet considered becoming a donor, I’d like to personally invite you to engage in a deeper relationship with our dynamic institution. After all, there’s something for everyone at Montalvo! Enjoy the show and thanks again for joining us tonight,

Angela Torre McConnell Executive Director

PAULA POUNDSTONE

Paula Poundstone is a humorist, author and comedian known for her clever, observational humor and spontaneous wit. When she isn’t collecting hotel soaps while on tour or panel-ing on NPR’s #1 show, Wait, Wait... Don’t Tell Me!, Paula hosts the popular Maximum Fun podcast, Nobody Listens to Paula Poundstone. Nobody is a comedy field guide to life complete with taste tests, cats of the weeks and leading experts in everything from beekeeping to ping pong to prosopagnosia (say that 3 times fast). Paula’s stand-up credentials are endless: Cats, Cops and Stuff; Goes to Harvard; Look What the Cat Dragged In; and numerous television appearances including The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Last Call with Carson Daly and Late Show with David Letterman. Famously, Paula provided backstage commentary during the 1992 presidential election on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and was the first woman to host the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. In 2017, Paula released her second book, The Totally Unscientific Study Of The Search For Human Happiness, in which she offers herself up as a guinea pig in a series of thoroughly unscientific experiments. Kirkus Reviews called the book, “A deeply revealing memoir in which the pathos doesn’t kill the humor—delivers more than it promises.” The book debuted at #1 on the Amazon Bestsellers List in Humor, and the audiobook was one of the five finalists for 2018 Audio Book of the Year. The book was recognized as one of eight semi-finalists for the Thurber Prize for American Humor, the highest recognition of the art of humor writing in the United States. Paula can be heard on the big screen as “Forgetter Paula” in Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out, winner of the 2017 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film. She has also starred in her own series on both HBO and ABC, is included on Comedy Central’s Top 100 Comics of All Time and won an American Comedy Award for Best Female Stand-Up. In February 2019, Paula’s stand-up special, Cats, Cops and Stuff was named by TIME Magazine and Tig Notaro as one of The 5 Funniest Stand-Up Specials Ever. Paula resides in Santa Monica, CA, where you can find her cleaning the litterboxes of her 14 cats: Clue, Oreo, Luigi, Jem, Belle, Brittle, Mrs. Feziwig, Wednesday, Severus, Tonks, Theo, Sham Wow, Harrison, and Hardy. PLAY ON THE GROUNDS

The Lifespan of a Fact by Jeremy Kareken, David Murrell, and Gordon Farrell JULY 27-29 • 6PM • $30 Facts become blurry when a demanding editor-in-chief hires the world’s most neurotically precise fact-checker to go toe-to-toe with an eccentric author who values story over accuracy. As the final deadline looms, hard facts square off against emotional truths in a funny and searing high-stakes showdown. The darling of the 2018 Broadway season, this fast-paced story proves the mundane life of a fact-checker is anything but. ABOUT PLAY ON THE GROUNDS: Play on the Grounds is a series of staged readings of live theatrical plays. These readings are the perfect marriage of the beauty of Montalvo with the excitement of live theatre in its purest form. Unlike a full production, a staged reading strips theatrical convention down to the bare essentials of engaging storytelling: performers and text. Audiences can expect riveting stories read by actors with minimal staging. So take your seat, enjoy a gourmet snack box with a glass of wine, and immerse yourselves in an unforgettable analog experience!

SALLY & DON LUCAS ARTISTS RESIDENCY PROGRAM Montalvo Arts Center is home to the Sally and Don Lucas Artists Program (LAP), a creative incubator and cultural producer dedicated to investing in artists and nurturing their development and growth. We support artists from all creative disciplines and geographical locations to create and present new and experimental work and undertake critical investigations of contemporary issues. We do this in a few ways:

INCUBATION We provide artists with time, space and support to test out new ideas, take risks, forge new collaborative relationships, and cross-pollinate ideas through our international artist residency housed on the grounds of Montalvo Arts Center. Lucas Artists Fellows are selected through a nomination process and are allocated a three-month residency period, which they can take over three years.

COMMISIONS We commission artists working across all disciplines to create new and innovative work. This is an opportunity for us to continue reinvesting in the work of our Fellows and support the development of projects incubated during artists’ stay in residence. Housed in a 175-acre public park, we are especially interested in fostering work that activates public space and discourse. Works for our grounds are commissioned on an ongoing basis and are the focus of our annual outdoor art exhibition.

PUBLIC PROGRAMS We generate opportunities for audiences to engage with artists through our monthly Open Access program and blog. The program offerings include conversations, performances, screenings, and culinary events. Open Access events are designed to offer the public a behind-the-scenes view into artists’ creative processes, as well as showcase works-inprogress and fully realized new work. Find out more about the LAP, our Fellows, and all our diverse offerings on the Open Access online magazine and archive:

ARTS & EDUCATION PROGRAMS Through cross-discipline, arts-centered practice, we are working to shape the educational landscape of Silicon Valley. Our belief is that the arts foster greater cognitive, social, and emotional capacity—and build engaged citizenship among our greater community. We are committed to providing quality learning experiences for all ages and skill levels that celebrate the creative spirit, engage the imagination, and develop the artist in all of us.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES Professional development is key to supporting deeper learning across content areas. Our offerings are opportunities to share strategies and research on integrated learning practices, and include workshops and lectures, our ArtistConnect networking panels, and our annual Arts in Your Classroom conference: an engaging symposium exploring current topics related to integrated learning.

WORKSHOPS AND CLASSES We invite the community to creatively express themselves in the restorative setting of Montalvo’s historic grounds. All of our sessions are led by established artists, practicing in the fields they teach. A small group size ensures individual guidance, and enrollment fees include all necessary materials. All skill levels, from the curious novice to the practiced professional, are welcome!

PERFORMING ARTS SERIES FOR STUDENTS Students and educators are invited to experience the energy of live dance, drama, and more in our intimate 300-seat Carriage House Theatre. Featuring performances by world-class artists, these shows are a perfect launching point for either a classroom or homeschool curriculum.

CAMPS

Photos: Michele Guieu, Stefanie Sylvester, JazzReach, & Dahlak.

We are proud to present camp sessions for ages 6–14 in a range of artistic disciplines. No matter what the interests of your child or teen may be, Montalvo has something to engage and inspire them. With small class sizes, focused instruction by professional artists, and private camp locations, we believe Montalvo summer camps are an extremely rewarding experience. In a supportive environment, your child will learn to flex their creative muscles as they make new friends and discover unique ways of expressing themselves… all within the natural scenery and fresh air of our gorgeous grounds.
