with special guests The Well Sponsored by Hungry Moose Market & Deli Montana-bred bluegrass outfit Kitchen Dwellers are captivating fans across the country with their high-energy live performances and unique approach to traditional music that fans have dubbed Galaxy Grass. Formed while attending college at Montana State, the group has burst onto the bluegrass scene sharing the stage with acts such as Railroad Earth, Greensky Bluegrass, The Infamous Stringdusters and Twiddle. In recent years the band has begun to tour nationally, hitting notable venues and festivals around the country including The Brooklyn Bowl, The Fox Theatre, Delfest, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Northwest String Summit, and The Frendly Gathering. 2017 has seen the band release their second studio album, Ghost In The Bottle while continuing to push the boundaries of their genre. The Well hails from Big Sky and is quickly making a name for itself with energetic live shows that feature well-written original music and carefully chosen cover songs.

Mandolin Orange released their fifth studio album, Blindfaller, in late 2016 and upon its release the album received chart placement on four different Billboard charts, including a #3 spot on Billboard’s Bluegrass Album chart, and was ultimately named one of Rolling Stone’s 40 Best Country Albums of 2016. Major festival and concert appearances have included Austin City Limits, Bonnaroo, Newport Folk Festival, Forecastle Festival, Pickathon, Fayetteville Roots, Edmonton Folk Festival, Merlefest, Telluride Bluegrass Festival and the Vancouver Folk Music Festival. Joe Pug became a folk sensation in the early 2010s, dropping out of college, working as a carpenter in Chicago, and playing music after hours. He has played Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, and the Newport Folk Festival. Then came a creative crisis and a long layoff, but Joe has back in a big way with his latest album, “Windfall.”

July 12: Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds Sponsored by Spanish Peaks Community Foundation In the years since forming, Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds have performed more than 700 shows and made their national TV debut on NBC’s Today Show. July 26: Shovels and Rope Sponsored by Big Sky PBR Shovels & Rope, a Charleston two-piece band comprised of Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst, doesn’t exactly fit into a standard genre mold. A mix of folk, rock and country, the focus of Shovels & Rope isn’t to adhere to one sound; rather, the duo’s intent is to create a quality sound regardless of genre. Big Sky Sky Classical ClassicalMusic MusicFestival Festival Big The Arts Council once again will be brining the best in classical music to Big Sky this summer, with the 8th annual Big Sky Classical Music Festival taking place August 10-12, 2018. Three days of incredible music, and most of it is free! For this year’s festival, be prepared to be enchanted by the mesmerizing sounds of acclaimed violinist Bella Hristova, who will perform an intimate recital with fellow violinist Angella Ahn at the Warren Miller Performing Arts Center on opening night. Saturday’s free outdoor concert will see Time for Three—perhaps the hottest classical crossover ensemble in the world--perform music from Bach to Brahms and beyond. Sunday’s free outdoor performance of the Big Sky Festival Orchestra with Maestro Peter Bay will feature Haydn’s Symphony No. 94, as well as Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 with soloist Bella Hristova as well as selections from Milhaud and Fauré.You can get tickets for this amazing recital at www.warrenmillerpac.org. Time for Three, comprised of violinist Nicolas (Nick) Kendall, doublebassist Ranaan Meyer and violinist Charles Yang, has been described as “America’s favourite classical garage band.” Formed in Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute of Music, Tf3 has performed at venues including Carnegie Hall, the BBC Proms, NFL games, the Indy 500, and Dancing with the Stars. Their acclaimed PBS special, released 2016, won an Emmy Award. The group’s hit YouTube bullying-prevention video, “Stronger,” has inspired students across the globe, eliciting features on CNN and the Huffington Post. To date, the group has performed hundreds of engagements as diverse as its music: from featured guest soloists on the Philadelphia Orchestra subscription series to Club Yoshi’s in San Francisco to residencies at the Kennedy Center to Christoph Eschenbach’s birthday concert at the Schleswig-Holstein Festival in Germany. Recent highlights included their Carnegie Hall debut, appearances with the Boston Pops, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, a sell-out concert at the 2014 BBC Proms, and an appearance on the ABC prime time hit show “Dancing with the Stars.” August 12: Big Sky Festival Orchestra with Maestro Peter Bay and soloist Bella Hristova. Program includes Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 in A Major, Haydn’s Symphony 94 in G Major, and selections from Milhaud and Fauré. This is a free concert at Town Center BIG SKY Park, starts at 5 p.m. Maestro Bay has appeared with seventy-five different orchestras including the National, Chicago, St. Louis, Houston, Dallas, Baltimore, New Jersey, North Carolina, Tucson, West Virginia, Colorado, Hawaii, Sarasota, Fort Worth, Bochum (Germany), Carinthian (Austria), Lithuanian National, and Ecuador National Symphonies, the Minnesota and Algarve (Portugal) Orchestras, the Louisiana, Buffalo, Rhode Island Philharmonics, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Eastman (Postcard from Morocco) and Aspen (The CLASSICAL Ballad of Baby Doe) Opera Theaters, and the Theater M U S I C Chamber Players of the Kennedy Center.

The career of Colorado-based artist Jeff Austin has already seen him break through jam and bluegrass scenes (as co-founder of the legendary Yonder Mountain String Band), play stages from The Fillmore Auditorium to Red Rocks Amphitheater, and outdoor events like Telluride Bluegrass Festival and Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, among many others. But with the launch of his solo career in 2014, Austin is now building on the foundations of previous ventures while honing his own sound and charting new courses. “I’ve learned a lot from the people I’ve played with,” says Austin who has shared stages with such luminaries as Del McCoury, Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Earle Scruggs, Jon Fishman, and Phil Lesh. Although there is a strong undercurrent of momentum and innovation that course through Austin’s newest project, there is Big Sky Travel Shoppe also a connection to the past with the bandleader revisiting selections from his Located at the Highway 191 back catalog. Offerings include “Dawn’s and Spur Road intersection Early Light,” “Snow in the Pines,” and others dating back to the 1990s. What matters, Austin points out, is that those songs evoke strong emotional responses GAS both from the audience and himself. BEER Played by this new ensemble, those SLIDER’S DELI songs feel revitalized and fresh. Featuring some of the finest Bluegrass musicians in Montana, Two Bit Franks are John Lowell, Tom Murphy, Russ Smith, Jeff Shouse and Kevin Fabozzi. Other Events July 31: Montana Shakespeare in the Parks “Love’s Labour’s Lost” Montana Shakespeare in the Parks will perform Love’s Labour’s Lost at 5:30 p.m. in Town Center Park in Big Sky, on Tuesday, July 31. As one of the summer’s most anticipated events in the region, Montana Shakespeare in the Parks brings professional productions, at no cost to the public, to communities throughout Montana, northern Wyoming, eastern Idaho, western North Dakota and eastern Washington. Remarkably self-reliant, the company features 10 professional actors selected by national audition who tour without technical assistance to bring live theatre to communities primarily in rural areas. Montana Shakespeare in the Parks (MSIP) opened its first season in the summer of 1973. Since that time, MSIP has performed over 2,250 times to nearly three quarters of a million people, becoming a mainstay of Montana culture.
September 14-16: MountainFilm in Big Sky The third annual Mountainfilm in Big Sky is a collection of films meant to inspire and educate audiences to create a better world, curated by the folks at the Mountainfilm Festival in Telluride, Colo. This year’s event includes a feature film at the Warren Miller Performing Arts Center, a night of documentary films at the Lone Peak Cinema, and a free outdoor movie in Town Center Park. In addition, there will be kids activities, conversations with film industry professionals and other activities throughout the weekend.
