Located in Big Sky’s Gallatin Canyon, at Big Sky’s Ophir School campus, WMPAC is a collaborative initiative of Big Sky School District #72, Friends of Big Sky Education and the Big Sky community. Along with national acts, the WMPAC hosts art events and education within the local community, including the Big Sky Community Theatre program, for all area adults with a passion to perform; and the Big Sky Community Chorus, for those who enjoy singing. Ophir School students also benefit. During the school day, students fill the center with their ideas and talents (continued on page 4)

Big Sky Resort Ski Programs Youth Local Programs Big Sky Resort’s progressive Youth Local Programs are a great way for kids from as little as three years old to 14 years old to be introduced to, or improve, ski and snowboard skills, while they enjoy the winter outdoors. Kids ten years old and younger ski free when enrolled in a youth program.
programs are full-day, offering two sessions – early January to late February or late February to late March – each on Saturday or Sunday in the Mountain Village area and the Madison Base area.
The Skiwees program is designed for three- and four-year-olds and is ideal for first-time skiers looking for a strong start or future rippers who are already cruising around the mountain. The Skiwees instructors specialize in early childhood development and work with these youngest skiers to ensure a strong start and a love for the slopes.
Master the Mountain Program The Biggest Skiing in America® has 5,800 acres of terrain and the five-week Master the Mountain program is the perfect way to explore it all. The program runs from early January to early February and is designed to provide adults of any age the skills necessary to be more comfortable in the "off piste" powder, moguls, glades and un-groomed terrain areas all over the mountain.
Mad Wolf is a popular program intended for level one through seven skiers, ages four to 13 years old. The goal of Mad Wolf is to inspire a lifelong passion for the mountain experience. The last day of each session is a celebration that culminates in a fun race and an awards ceremony. A new program, the Wolverines program, is for children ages eight to 13 years old that enjoy being challenged and are skiing at levels five through nine. The focus is on developing solid techniques, while relishing in a variety of terrain and conditions. The Wolverines program concentrates on broad skills and blends elements of race training, freestyle and all-mountain skiing. The last day of each session is a celebration that culminates in a fun race and an awards ceremony. The pinnacle of the Youth Local Program is the Big Sky Rippers for advanced skiers and riders ages 10 to 14 years old, with a skill level of seven or above. The curriculum reinforces fundamental techniques for advanced skiing of big mountain terrain, freestyle, avalanche awareness, beacon skills and independent judgment with an emphasis on safety. Rippers are given an opportunity to participate in Big Sky Resort’s First Tracks program on one morning in each session (weather and conditions permitting). Skiwees is a half-day program offered in two sessions, early January to midFebruary or late February to early April, each on Saturday or Sunday in the Mountain Village area or seven days a week at the Madison Base area. All other

The Master the Mountain program has eight weekday sessions offered Tuesday and Friday, either morning or afternoon; or six Saturday sessions held at the Mountain Village area. New this year are Monday and Thursday sessions offered in the morning at the Madison Base Area. Participants in Master the Mountain must possess at least "advanced beginner" skills and be comfortable on beginner level slopes. Individuals are divided into groups to ski with one of our instructors based on terrain, speed, personal goals and compatibility. During the session, participants will receive individualized feedback from one of Big Sky Resort’s certified instructors and have the opportunity to see themselves on videotape. In addition to the on-snow experience, the program includes après ski social events and fun informational clinics after a day on the slopes. Topics may include ski tuning, avalanche awareness and safety, and biomechanics of skiing. Optional socials and seminars will be scheduled throughout the program. The Master the Mountain program has been running for 18 years and was created for residents and visitors with extended stays in the Big Sky area. Visit www.bigskyresort.com/lessons and click on Adult Local Programs or call (406) 995-5743 for more information and pricing.
Snobar: Slopeside Outdoor Nightclub at Big Sky Resort Walls of snow, a dazzling array of lights and lasers, bartenders in parkas, and one raging DJ is Big Sky Resort’s famous Snobar on January 17th and 24th. Après ski fun for this 21 and over venue begins around 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM, next to Swifty 2.0 above the Swift Current chairlift near the Mountain Village. Each year, Big Sky Resort’s Terrain Park crew changes Snobar’s shape and size; the new look will be revealed on January 17th. Snow Cat and hand-built completely out of snow — with a roughly 12-foot lighted ceiling — Snobar entry is $5 cash at the “door,” which includes a complimentary glow stick. Bozeman’s DJ 5 Star will be pumping the music as people show their dance moves in ski boots, snowboard boots, or any old shoe they feel comfortable in while dancing on snow. “Snobar is uniquely Big Sky Resort. It’s one of those signature events you can’t experience anywhere else in Montana and few other places on earth,” said Anna Husted, Big Sky Resort Event Manager. “It’s a blast from beginning to end. It’s a bucket list event for anyone.” The Snobar party heats up at 9:30 PM in Whiskey Jack’s as DJ 5 Star continues pumping the jams indoors, keeping guests spinning on the dance floor. WARREN MILLER continued from page 1 under the supervision of drama, visual arts and music professionals and faculty. Visit warrenmillerpac.org to learn more about WMPAC programming or to donate.
By Samantha Persico Growing up, I was immediately immersed in a world based on food. With a Russian (Jewish) mother and an Italian father, life seemed to revolve around the next meal. I spent a lot of time with my Italian grandmother when I was young and she definitely instilled in me a deep love for the cuisine. Needless to say, nobody’s cooking would or could ever surpass hers and I became extremely picky when it came to eating Italian food in restaurants. In each city I’ve lived in, I have always found at least one spot that was decent enough – the true test being the sauce and meatballs. If you can’t make a decent sauce, what business do you have running an Italian restaurant? My first experience at Ousel and Spur was actually for Happy Hour during the summer. I was welcomed by a great looking bar – barnwood and metal accents – and an all-around homey feel. I knew this wouldn’t be my last time there. I walked in with no intention of eating, or falling in love. But with one bite of the meatballs, which just happened to be ordered before I arrived, it was game over for me. Soft, moist, and flavorful – just like Grama used to make. Not to mention the rest of the menu, complete with thin crust pizzas, homemade pastas and mac and cheese. I couldn’t believe my own good luck. Ousel and Spur is also open for breakfast, for which they offer delicious coffee, smoothies, juices and delectable breakfast sandwiches. Never in a million years did I think I would find my comfort food in Montana. But, I have.

New Co-Chairs of Jack Creek Preserve Foundation After founding the Jack Creek Preserve Foundation (JCPF) 10 years ago and co-chairing the board during that period of time, Jon and Dottie Fossel have recently reduced their roles. Although both will remain on the board, Peggy Taylor and Mike Baugh replaced them as co-chairs on January 1, 2015. Peggy Taylor, President and Co-Chair of the Board of Directors, is the Director of the Master of Science in Science Education program (MSSE) at Montana State University (MSU) in Bozeman. The program’s reach is nationwide and has become the largest graduate program at MSU. “I am excited about opportunities to expand JCPF educational programs – for children as well as adults – and I look forward to working with the JCPF Board of Directors to further develop relationships with our neighboring communities,” remarks Taylor. Mike Baugh, Co-Chair of the Board of Directors, brings with him a background in business, conservation and hunter education. He has a long history of involvement with Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, where he has been a member for 30 years and currently serves on the Board of Directors. Baugh is also a Bow Hunter Education Instructor for Yellowstone Country and Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks. “I am excited about working with Peggy Taylor and all the JCPF board members as we enter 2015 and continue to carry on the passion and dreams envisioned by Jon and Dottie,” says Baugh. “The future for hunting and conservation is our youth, awareness and education.” “I am extremely pleased to have Peggy and Mike step in to the position of co-chairs,” remarks Jon Fossel. “Their passion for the conservation and education mission of the Jack Creek Preserve will enable the it to achieve even greater successes in the future.” For more information, or to visit the preserve, go to www. jackcreekpreserve.org or contact Executive Director Katie Coleman at 406.995.7550.
