Gallatin Veterinary Hospital

Gallatin Veterinary Hospital (GVH) provides cutting edge technology and professional service given with compassion, courtesy and respect. Pets are members of your family; we treat them like members of ours.

“It’s about giving people – clients, community members, non-profits – a vehicle for their story,” remarks Mike Rey, Rey Advertising owner and local publisher extraordinaire. Since its inception in 2003, Rey Advertising has facilitated that platform, telling the story of southwest Montana, both past and present, through the Monthly newspapers, Destination Big Sky, Destination Yellowstone, Gallatin Valley Life/ Whole Health and the locally and nationally renowned Montana Historian (Historian). In the publishing industry since 1977, Mike Rey moved to Montana in 1999 and began work in advertising. He started Rey Advertising in 2003, a business that has evolved from a small venture that began producing a monthly newspaper and an annual historical magazine (Historian) in 2009 to a powerhouse offering a range of specialized publications catered to the interests and lifestyles of visitors and locals alike throughout the area. Originally focused on downtown Bozeman businesses and non-profits, the Monthly has undergone perhaps the most substantial transition in focus and format over the past several years. Though still committed to local businesses, the Monthly has expanded its attention to all of Gallatin Valley and now includes a Big Sky edition, a Big Sky Homes & Real Estate section and a seasonal Hunting & Fishing insert. What has remained is its commitment to telling stories of local and national interest, providing community

calendar and event listings, and offering a free venue for non-profits to access a wide and varied Bozeman and Big Sky audience. Rey Advertising’s glossy, full-color annual publications have experienced an evolution of their own over the years, ever redefining and refining focus to adjust to southwest Montana’s changing population and personality. Currently in its seventh issue, the Historian was Rey’s first annual publication and remains the one dearest to his heart. The Historian illuminates the colorful histories whose panorama shapes this unique place. Aimed at a diverse group of locals and tourists, the Historian brings these stories to life for everyone interested in Montana. Destination Big Sky, Destination Yellowstone and Gallatin Valley Life/Whole Health offer in-depth profiles highlighting the distinct people and places that make each respective community far more than a mere stop along the journey; they make it the destination. Rey Advertising also provides annual production assistance with several publications throughout Big Sky, including the Arts Council of Big Sky’s Summer Concert Series Program.

Accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) since 2009, GVH was the first hospital in Bozeman to earn this distinction, which is awarded to only 12% of the veterinary hospitals in the United States and Canada. AAHA evaluates over 900 of the highest quality standards available in veterinary medicine, including: anesthesia, client service, contagious disease, continuing education,

dentistry, diagnostic imaging, emergency and critical care, examination facilities, housekeeping and maintenance, human resources, laboratory, leadership, medical records, pain management, patient care, pharmacy, referral standards, safety and surgery to ensure the best care for your pet. A significant continuing commitment in providing the best possible care for you and your four-legged family members, AAHA accreditation is a huge undertaking, but at GVH we believe it makes us stronger.

Computer Tomography (CT) We are excited to bring the newest and best technology in advanced 3D imaging to GVH. We are the first veterinary hospital in the state of Montana to install the NewTom 5G Vet Cone Beam CT. The technology is so advanced, that many of these machines are placed in universities, such as The University of California at Davis, or in larger cities. Why is this important? Cone beam technology allows equal and, in some cases, better image quality when compared to traditional CT scans. It exposes

BOZEMAN FILM SOCIETY

111 S. Grand Ave, Suite 112 • Bozeman, MT 59715 • 406.585.8881 • bozemanfilmsociety.org Bozeman Film Society Presents Me and Earl and the Dying Girl Saturday, August 22nd, 7:30PM The Ellen Theater Tickets: $8.75/General Admission; $8.50/Seniors and Students Winner of 2015 Sundance Grand Jury and Audience Award Prizes, Me & Earl & the Dying Girl is a beautifully scripted and perfectly cast coming-of-age dramatic comedy with uncommon charm and insight. Rated PG13. 104 minutes. Visit www.bozemanfilmsociety.org or www.theellenttheatre.com for more information.

Ozturk arrived in India to tackle Meru. Their planned seven-day trip quickly devolved into a 20-day odyssey in sub-zero temperatures with depleting food rations. Within 100 meters of the elusive summit, their journey — like all previous attempts — fell short of the goal. Heartbroken and defeated, the trio returned to their everyday lives, where the siren song of Meru continued to beckon. By September 2011, Anker had convinced his team to reunite and undertake the Shark's Fin once more, under even more extraordinary circumstances. Directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, Meru is a unique blend of riveting personal storytelling and jaw-dropping cinematography, expertly recorded by the climbers during their journey.

Story Under the Stars: Born Free Friday, August 28th, 7 – 10:30PM Lawn of The Story Mansion Park (College & S. Willson) Tickets: FREE! Born Free is the 1966 Oscar-winning family classic about Elsa the lion. This fun, familyfriendly evening opens at 7PM with food trucks, popcorn and concessions, along with live ivory-detection dog demos from Working Dogs For Conservation (WD4C) and lion radio collar samples from the Zambia Carnivore Program. Walk, bike or carpool with your blankets and low-back chairs to check out this wonderful event made possible by the Friends of Story Mansion, Bozeman Film Society and the Yellowstone Club Community Foundation. A short film from WD4C and Born Free starts around 8:45pm. For more info, visit www.bozemanfilmsociety.org.

Bozeman residents and chairpersons of the Alex Lowe Charitable Foundation (ALCF), Jennifer Lowe-Anker and her husband, Conrad Anker, will be in attendance and hold a post-film discussion. Proceeds from each screening will benefit the ALCF, dedicated to preserving Alex Lowe's legacy by providing direction and financial support to sustainable, community-based humanitarian programs designed to help the people who live in remote regions of the world. This foundation carries on Alex's spirit of adventure and has supported such programs as the Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund, The Khumbu Climbing Center, Magic Yeti Childrens' Libraries, the Widows Relief Fund in Nepal, and the National Park Exchange.

Montana Film Premiere of Meru A Benefit for the Alex Lowe Charitable Foundation Saturday, August 29th, 3PM & 7:30PM The Ellen Theatre Tickets: $19.95 (plus fees) The Alex Lowe Foundation and Bozeman Film Society are pleased to present the Montana Premiere and benefit presentation of Meru, winner of the 2015 Sundance Film Festival Audience Award for Documentary. In the high-stakes pursuit of big-wall climbing, the Shark's Fin on Mount Meru may be the ultimate prize. Sitting 21,000 feet above the sacred Ganges River in Northern India, the mountain's perversely stacked obstacles make it both a nightmare and an irresistible calling for some of the world's toughest climbers.

For tickets, call The Ellen box office at 585-5885; reserve online at www.theellentheatre. com; or visit The Ellen's box office, Wednesday through Saturday, between 1 and 3 pm or two hours before the screening. BFS Cheap Seat and Patron passes are not valid for this special ALCF film benefit. For more information and previews, visit www.bozemanfilmsociety. org or contact pamela. hainworth@gmail.com.

Emerson Center, 111 S. Grand Ave., Ste. 106, Bozeman, MT 59715 • 406.587.2127 • surrattmarci@gmail.com

The Artists’ Gallery in the Emerson Cultural Center will feature the work of Carol Barmore, Kevin Heaney and Carmen Stanislao during the month of August. The show will include a featured artist reception as part of the Bozeman Downtown Art Walk. Carol Barmore works in oils and believes that painting has the power to bring us into an intimate encounter with beauty and touch places within us we didn’t realize existed. Though Barmore enjoys painting the landscape, she has recently fallen in love with depicting farm animals, wildlife and people. As a fifth generation Montanan, Kevin Heaney works to capture the magic of

the old west and its people. His paintings and drawings depict his mining and pioneer heritage, as well as his love for the beauty of the natural landscape. Carmen believes that the durability, strength and plasticity of bronze, as well as the many beautiful patinas it can take on, make it the perfect medium for her. The most recognizable aspect of her sculptures is her attention to detail. Her latest sculpture, “Ridgeback,” will be on display this month. The Art Walk reception will be held Friday, August 14th. Please join us in celebrating these three featured artists and enjoying wine and refreshments from 5 to 8 pm.

Split image demonstrates impact of polarizing filter (right side)

Is the grass not green enough on the other side? Are pale skies making you blue? Do reflections scare you? Don't fret! When you pack your camera bag for summer outdoor adventures, check your filter collection to be sure that it includes a polarizing filter. Commonly used for landscape pictures, a polarizing filter makes the blues of Montana’s big sky “pop." In fact, it increases the color saturation of your picture so that all your colors will be more vivid. Use it to control reflections on water or high mountain snowbanks. Like a fisherman’s polarized sunglasses, this filter allows you to see and photograph objects (like fish) just below the water’s surface. A little trick? Rotate the filter before you attach it to your lens to see if you like what you see. If you have polarized sunglasses, tilt your head to the side (you will look weird doing this but it works) and see if you like how your polarized lenses change the scene. A couple cautions: a polarizer won’t work when directly facing or turned away from the scene’s light source. Be sure to work at a 90° angle to that light source. Another great filter to have on hand is a graduated neutral density filter. Think of it as sunglasses for the top half of your image. It allows you to reduce the exposure reaching a specific part of your picture. For example, if the sky is too bright and is going to be washed out, a graduated neutral density filter allows you to reduce the brightness of the sky without affecting the tone of the foreground. Rotate the filter 180° and it will reduce the glittering brightness of snow in the bottom of your image, allowing you to retain details and textures that might otherwise be lost. A variable neutral density filter has multiple stops to help in long exposures during the day, and it helps to blur movement. Capture the silky, slow movement of a waterfall or cotton-candy clouds even when you are out at high noon. Another advantage? It's an all-in-on, so you don't have to carry around multiple SINGLE neutral density filters. Ultimately, the best way to learn what imaging accessories will help you get the quality of pictures you want is to take pictures. When something doesn’t work, go back to your camera store or camera club to find a solution that will get you past that particular problem. Experimentation is the best teacher. So, head on outside, with your camera and lenses ready to go, and keep taking pictures.

New Studio - New Work: Ceramics by Josh DeWeese Opening Reception: Friday, August 14th, 5 – 8 pm Bozeman native and nationally renowned ceramicist Josh DeWeese will be featured in an opening reception in the tart gallery this August. Known for drawing and painting with glazes, DeWeese creates bold whorls, drips and splatters on fluid, twisting forms that, at first, feel chaotic, but then draw the viewer in to a serene, organic world of texture, form and hue.

MONTANA’SBEST Montana's best source for all-natural pet foods, grooming, supplements, day care and unique dog gear.

This body of work is some of the first created in a newly built wood-fired kiln housed outside his new home studio west of Bozeman. Utilizing regionally sourced “wild” clays, as well as ashes from trees harvested to clear the area for his new studio, DeWeese creates glazes and slips that produce vibrant, yet earthy colors and finishes. Each kiln, firing and glaze has its own personality and flavor, adding multiple elements of chance and serendipity to the creative process.

Opening reception will be held in tart, rooms 107B & C in the Emerson Center, 111 S. Grand Ave. Call 406.582.0416 or visit www.tartique.com for more information.

Heart of the valley animal shelter Take a Walk through the Heart to Heart Park Make a point to break away from your busy day to visit a tranquil space. You’re invited to Heart to Heart Park, the community’s only place specifically designed to celebrate the bond between pets and people. Summer is the very best time to walk through the streamside park, which commemorates cherished animals while also supporting the mission of the shelter. When donors buy memorial plaques, benches, trees or art for the park, the shelter will also gain operational funds. Farsighted donors, including Bert and Sharon Hopeman and Dr. Rob Myers, envisioned this space many years ago. Now their dreams are being realized, and people are visiting, walking dogs and enjoying the water at the stream and fountain. Children taking part in our Pet Pal’s summer day camp spent time under the shade pavilion and enjoyed lunch and activities in the park. We’re proud to say that Heart to Heart Park was featured in an article in Zone 4 magazine, a publication for Rocky Mountain gardeners. In that article, Micheline Halpin of Greenspace Landscaping tells how designer Jada Krusniak helped create the park and raise funds for its plantings and structures. Tragically, Jada and her dog Rosie were killed in a car accident last October, and Jada never got to see the park finished. But in her honor, Greenspace and Jada’s family have made the park an even more beautiful place by planting trees, and installing benches and plaques to ensure that Jada’s memory will live forever at our park. You are invited to come and see the park, and learn about how you can honor a special person or pet. To schedule your visit, please write to kathryn@ heartofthevalleyshelter.org or call (406) 388-9399 x221.

Current Nutrition: Fromm Gold Senior Previous Nutrition: Kirkland Lamb and Rice

Current Supplements: Joint Mobility by Wholistic Pet Previous Supplements: none

I’ve had digestive problems my whole life. I used to vomit and have “accidents” often … this DEE-O-GEE CHANGED made my people sad and angry :( I was also YOUR LIFE? overweight despite leading an active life. This led to me tearing up my knee and the doctor said I needed to get my weight under control. So, my people talked with the people at Dee-O-Gee and they recommended a new food and supplements. I thought this new fancy food was going to be more expensive and I’d get less treats, but that was not the case! The new food has ZERO filler ingredients so I actually eat less of it and feel full … and, I haven’t had an “accident” in a long time! The supplements make my joints feel amazing! HAS

I recommend Dee-O-Gee to any dog with people that care about them. They only RECOMMEND sell quality products and truly believe DEE-O-GEE? in them. They have a vast knowledge of their products and truly want every dog (or, human) to enjoy the experience in their stores. The owners and staff are extremely friendly and helpful.

gallatin veterinary hospital Hyperthyroidism Hyperthyroid disease increases the metabolic rate and the blood pressure. Both of these processes are damaging to the kidneys and heart. Hyperthyroidism will increase the blood pressure and force the kidneys to work harder, making the kidneys appear as though they are doing a better job clearing toxins than they are capable of doing when the blood pressure is normal. This means that after your cat is treated for hyperthyroidism, his recheck blood work may demonstrate elevated kidney values.Yet even though the kidneys may appear “worse” after treatment for hyperthyroidism, as long as your cat has reasonable function remaining, your cat’s kidney function will last longer as the damaging effects of hyperthyroidism have been removed. Hyperthyroidism tends to increase the metabolic rate, and frequently causes the heart to beat harder and faster than normal, leading to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, were the walls of the heart become thickened, resulting in decreased efficiency of the pumping of the heart. If the condition is severe, stress or sudden exertion can cause animals to suddenly decompensate and develop life threatening abnormal heart contractions and rhythm. There are multiple ways to treat hyperthyroidism. On initial diagnosis we will start your cat on an oral medication or diet that will help to lower the T4 level in your cat. This allows us to check for any underlying kidney disease. If severe kidney disease is uncovered we may want to try to preserve a mild state of hyper thyroidism to continue to maintain a degree of kidney function. Methimazole is a drug which eats away thyroid tissue, decreasing the levels of the thyroid hormone responsible for the increased metabolism. Methimazole

is usually a life-long medication that requires daily administration. The most common side effect is vomiting. While on Methimazoel we recommend monitoring of blood levels of thyroid and kidney values every 6-12 months. Another method is a relatively new diet manufactured by Hill’s called y/d. It is greatly reduced in iodine, which is necessary for the body to form thyroid hormone. Because most other diets and treats contain iodine, it must be fed to the cat as a sole diet and no other food or treats. It is also a life-long treatment and will require monitoring thyroid and kidney numbers similar to the monitoring required for Methimazole. If after achieving an appropriate dose of the medication called Methimazole and determining the underlying kidney health of your cat we can either maintain your cat on the oral medication or discuss more permanent forms of therapy that do not require daily medicating. Methimazole does not control the physiologic symptoms of hyperthyroidism as well as the radio-iodine treatment, but it is certainly preferable to no treatment. The most preferable method is with an injection of radiolabeled iodine. This is usually a one-time treatment and it usually controls the physiologic problems, especially cardiac problems, very well. If this is not an option then the oral medications must be given for the rest of the cat’s life.

In the fall of 2014, state and community partners in Gallatin and Park counties learned that they had received the grant after an extensive application process. After 10 months of research and planning, the Montana Project LAUNCH Initiative (MT-PLI) was born. Designed to support healthy families and children in Gallatin and Park Counties through an early childhood system invested in social and emotional development, MT-PLI is guided by four primary goals: 1. Engage children and families to increase awareness of social and emotional health; 2. Strengthen infrastructure of a coordinated early childhood system; 3. Expand screening and referrals to reach a broader population; and 4. Enhance provider capacities to effectively meet the needs of children and families. LAUNCH partners are employing five core strategies to realize these goals: 1. Expanded screening using the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ); 2. Integration of behavioral health into primary care settings; 3. Mental health consultation in early care and education; 4. Enhanced Parents as Teachers home visiting with increased focus on social and emotional wellbeing; and 5. Family strengthening and parent skills training using the Incredible Years Program.

Verge Theater Announces 2015-2016 Season! Verge Theater will open its 2015-2016 Season in September, on its tiny stage, with the giant Mel Brooks Musical, Young Frankenstein. Left in stitches from Young Frankenstein, we’ll draw back the curtain in late October and continue in true Halloween fashion, welcoming local storytellers as they grab the mic and tell true Tales From The Verge on the subject of TERRIFIED! You’ll go from shuddering in fear to hitched over in laughter when Improv On The Verge takes a Main Stage weekend in November to showcase the Bozeman Improverts. Next, our very own Ryan Cassavaugh will usher in the holiday season with his world premier of Jimmy’s First Christmas (Out of Jail)! We’ll then ring in the New Year with laughs as our 5th Annual All Original Comedy Revue presents original skits worthy of Saturday Night Live (the good years of SNL, that is). February and March will welcome Guest Directors Todd Hoberecht and Natalie Scheidler, who will respectively captivate you with the hit musical with a message, Next To Normal, and the touching, tragic and provocative cultural narrative, These Shining Lives. One might think we should drop the mic, walk off stage, and take a much deserved break after all of these fabulous shows, but we have more!! In April, we will again invite local storytellers to the stage for another round of our incredibly popular Tales From The Verge. We haven’t decided on a topic for this one yet, but rest assured, no matter what the subject, it is always fascinating to hear true tales spoken from the mouths of the not-so-innocent. Another Improv On The Verge weekend follows with more hilarious surprises from The Bozeman Improverts (maybe Improv The Musical, maybe an Improv Battle to the death, maybe we’ll just improvise a play before your very eyes; scripts are overrated after all). We’ll continue a very full April with our Annual Rocky Horror Show weekend of debauchery. Pull up your fishnets and strap on your corsets, because nobody gets out unscathed from these three performances, which culminate in a Midnight show that always gets dirty! (We’re talking about the carpet. It’s always a mess when we’re done.) If April is the cruelest month, then May is the quirkiest at Verge Theater. And we won’t disappoint when we produce Row After Row, the offbeat play about three Civil War re-enactors. And then Summer 2016 will find the return of Don’t Close Your Eyes: Live Radio Theater, in their 6th Season, with seven new radio plays written in different genres. This is a local favorite that brings people indoors even during our short summers! What else could we possibly do to make Verge Theater enticing to you? Join us as we exit the weekends with laughs at our Monday Night Improv On The Verge shows. Parents, grandparents, older siblings and babysitters, don’t forget about our full season of Saturday children’s matinees and our three full-length teen theater productions. Verge Theater also has an educational wing that offers kid’s classes in comedy improv and musical theater, a teen theater program to fill those after school hours with energy and art, and a five-level improv school. Don’t miss a day of our 2015-2016 Season. For more info, check us out at www. vergetheater.com, email us at info@vergetheater.com, or call us at (406) 5870737. See you at The Verge!!
